Here is one for hdd.
It's no big deal, just right-click (button 3) the icon and open with
kedit and change the /dev/hdd to whatever device your removable storage
is recognized as, then save back. Remember there is a corresponding
entry in fstab which had better name the same device.

Don't forget as root
mkdir /mnt/zipzap
chmod 0777 /mnt/zipzap
I set it for hdd. It could as easily be hdc, hdb, sdx, etc., depending
on what sort of zip (or jaz or SPARQ or EZFLyer) you use.
your fstab line is correct, except remember the mount point is /mnt/zipzap
And you should have the icon once you drag zipzap_u.xpm, zipzap_m.xpm
to /usr/share/icons and then drag the other file (ZipZAP.kdelnk)
to your desktop.
The process of writing a script file to auto copy these files to their
proper locations and to do the whole thing automatically without echo is
left as an exercise for the student. WEG>

[newbie] HP Deskjet 722C

I am trying to print from Linux to an HP DeskJet 722C that is attached to a
win98 machine named KB0498 and IP address of 192.168.1.3.
In the Linux Print Tool, I am unsure which printer to choose. There seems to be
drivers for 5xxx,6xxx, and 8xxx, but not 7xxx. I have tried most of them with
no success. That is, the ASCII Test from PrintTool shows up in the Printer
Queue, but never prints. Well, when I first ran the setup and did an ASCII
print, I managed to get a page to the printer that consisted of a single line of
text, but after that, nothing would make it out of the spooler. I see the
lights on the hub blinking, and I can ping 192.168.1.3 so I know they are
communicating. Now I DO have the same printer shared on my NT Server
box(KB01NT, 192.168.1.1) I know, NT should at as the print server, but I've
gotta be different. I have tried configuring the printer to go through the NT
box to no avail, figuring that since the printer is shared, it could somehow be
found. I guess what I'm trying to ask is Does anybody know if a driver is
available for the HP 722C in case that is the problem, AND/OR can anyone tell
from the rambling information above if I am going about this in the right way?

Thanks,

Hello,

Everything went well with the steps below except for one part. When I do
the rebuild as follows:

rpm --rebuild Device3Dfx-2.2-3.src.rpm

And I try to execute the following command the file isn't present in that
directory. (I made sure I had the case correct in the directory names)

rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i386/Device3Dfx-2.2-3.i386.rpm

Where is it going?

Also, if I get the GUI working at 640X480 and install the src file through
kpackage will it rebuild it and install it all in one shot?

Just continuing my barrage of questions...

I did:

rpm --rebuild Device3Dfx-2.2-3.src.rpm
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i386/Device3Dfx-2.2-3.i386.rpm

rpm -Uvh XFree86-SVGA-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm

Sure...highlight the text you want to copy (hold down left

Well I will address your modem speed issue since I hear some of our users
complain about this quite a bit. Modems initially connect at the best speed.
however windows is not always true with it. Sometimes it connects at a speed a
little too high. Your modem will retrain itself to get to its maximal speed
whether it be slowing down or speeding up. I would do a file transfer to see
if the transfer speed is the same. If not try playing around with init
strings. You'd be amazed at how many people connect at 49k and then we look at
there actual speed on the terminal server and its like 40k. this used to be a
big flaw in the old x2. I think v.90 is the worst thing since windows. Anyone
who doesnt connect at the impossible 56,000 thinks that there isp is messed up
little do they know that their is many factors that play roles in your connect
speed.

this sounds less like a printer driver problem and more like a network
configuration problem, and specifically with samba. Try running smbclient
with the appropraite switches (man smbclient, or just smbclient to get the
help). basically, you should be able to see the printer listed when you
run this smb client.. After that, try putting in a username into the
printer's config (under the samba section in printtool).

Select Postscript printer. Linux has only a very basic driver for
the 722 (no color) which is sort-of a WINPrinter. Just use the postscript
driver and let windows use its driver for the major work. On the
windows machine, make sure you have shared out the printer both through
the "Network Neighborhood" settings and by right-clicking the printer icon
and setting it to shared.
Finally, make sure you have a good copy of printtool from the Mandrake
Update site, and the latest Samba. Many things, including the print
script for samba and the filter routines, are broken in previous versions
(including RedHat 6.0, where it began).

Hi,

I'm having trouble mounting my zip drive (100M NEC ATAPI) from an
account other than root.

I set up a disk with mke2fs. And here's the relevant line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/hdd/mnt/zipauto
sync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide 0 0

Then I can mount the disk with:
[root] # mount -t ext2 /dev/hdd /mnt/zip

This lets me create new directories and, presumably, other things. But
when I become a user, I can no longer mount:

[root] $ su joel
[joel] $ mount -t ext2 /dev/hdd /mnt/zip
mount: only root can do that

I thought that was what the "user" option in fstab was for! I even tried
changing "nosuid" to "suid"

Any ideas?

BTW: is there any significant difference between NEC and Iomega zip
drives? The invoice for my new computer says Iomega, but the installed
drive is a NEC. Just wondering if I should demand a replacement

James, don't lose the faith man. I had the same problem w/ Mandrake 5.3
and have since replaced the sound card and modem with used parts that work
better in both windows and Mandrake than the old ones did. I had a power
supply and a CD-ROM die on me at different times and replaced those too.
Some of my hardware didn't always play nice under windows95 either. Just
try to stay w/ fairly standard parts. For a modem, I went to a USR 33.6
internal w/ jumpers and on sound card I went to a Creative Sound Blaster 16
w/ half jumpers and half PnP and the PnP was still not recognized and I set
it up manually in sndconfig. I tried three power supplies before one
worked and switched to an ATAPI compliant CD after the 1994 Panasonic w/
proprietary interface died.

If you are having trouble, but really want to try Linux just go to a local
computer store and see what used parts they have available. Make sure you
can return the item if it doesn't work in your system. See how much each
part is going to cost you and save up for a while, it is worth it.
Brian
my $0.02

Well I think I am going to give up on my install of Mandrake.

I cannot get it to recognize my modem or sound card.

I have found out the my modem is on Com3 IRQ11 but have found no way..
even with everyones help of finding it or configuring it.

As for my sound card it is found by linux when it boots.. but it aborts
putting it in memory because it is sharing an IRQ with another item on the
PCI bus.. which is fine in windows but not in linux I guess..

So thanks all for your help.. but this is just not hardware friendly
enough
for my current system.

I guess if I want to run Linux I am going to have to build a specific box
with all the specific hardware able to be detected and run.

Re: [newbie] Not getting anywhere!!

1999-08-19 Thread Civileme

If your modem is a PCI or even if it is not, there is a chance (nearly
a certainty if it is PCI)that it is a Winmodem which will never work
under Linux. The hardware normally associated with a modem is replaced
by (secret) software DLed to it. It may be that such software does
not even fit the Linux security model, which keeps applications walled
off from the op system core. (That's why windows has 50,000 exploits
and viruses and linux laughs at such).
It is possible to relocate a PnP sound card's interrupts, and it is
possible to use pnpdump to build a basic isapnp.conf file, but your sound
card is PCI. The rig you mention smells highly proprietary.
I would hazard a guess or two at brand names from my own experience, but
I see no reason to.
Linux has requirements for hardware a little saner than those of Windows,
and of course it doesn't support those things made to run only under windows.
(Would you rather write a driver for a cheap, poorly-performing modem where
all is secret or one which supports all the latest bells and whistles for
which you have good hardware information, given that your time is limited
and you're not getting paid for it?)
Yes, it is possible to buy hardware that is distinctly unfriiendly to
Linux, and I fear that is what has happened here.

Thanks to several people on the list I was able to solve a KDE problem.
Now I wonder if someone can help me to get my three button mouse to work
properly. (It operates as a two button mouse now). When I did
'mouseconfig', it detected my serial mouse on COM1. However, I had to
 select which one to use.

My mouse is a Matsonic Model No. ADO-101. Not knowing what to choose
from the table, I picked 3-button generic (serial). I did not select
"Emulate 3 button mouse" on first try, but did later. Both selections
resulted in the mouse acting as a simple two button mouse (the centre
button does not work, nor does pushing both buttons at once).

 Murray Strome

The generic selection should work for most mouses. You should never select
'Emulate 3 button mouse" when you have 3 buttons. Unlike Windows, the
middle/third button is not for double-clicking. In linux, when you
highlight text, it is automatically copied. The middle/third button is used
to paste that text. It takes a little getting used to when you are
accustomed to the double-clicking function.

Try "soffice" (no quotes, of course).

While I'm at it, I have been having a problem with my StarOffice 5.1. I
installed it using the /net switch. After the GUI starts installing the
files, I get this error:

error: invalid compressed (deflated) data for libsw516li.so

I retried a few times, but still the same error, so I chose to ignore it to
continue the installation. Everything seemed fine after that, even doing
the user installation. The problem comes when I start StarOffice. The
program loads, but when I try to start a text document, I get some error
message about abnormal termination then it shuts down. I can't give the
exact error there because I uninstalled the program.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could this be a simple download corruption?

 I did:

 rpm --rebuild Device3Dfx-2.2-3.src.rpm
 rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i386/Device3Dfx-2.2-3.i386.rpm

 rpm -Uvh XFree86-SVGA-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm

Actually, the network install is preferable also if you have more than
one person using the computer. It allows most of the files to be
stored in a central location, then you just have each user run setup
and it will only take a little more space rather than a full
installation each time. IE: Husband and wife and kids all on one
Linux box (or network). But you're not allowed to use it free for

[newbie] How do I get Bootmagic to see Linux Partition

1999-08-19 Thread Sevatio Octavio

My problem:Bootmagic only displays the win98
partition.

Here's what I've done:I used partition magic to make room for linux along
side win98. Then I used Disk-Druid during the installation process to make
additional partitions over the linux-native partition created by partition
magic. Also along the way, the linux installation process asked to format
the new partitions and I chose yes.

Question:How
do I get bootmagic to display both the win98 and linux partition?

[newbie] Sound permissions SLab

1999-08-19 Thread Aaron deRozario

I have been using Linux successfully with sound for some time now. However
I have recently tried a couple of things and now sound has gone haywire. I
have done the following...

1) Setup a specific user account for playing Civilisation-CTP. Don't ask
me why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.
2) I have tried installing and using SLab 3.01 hard disk recording system.
I've played around with it a bit, but as yet have not actually recorded
anything.

I first noticed problems when I tried playing Civ - CTP under another user
account. There was no sound. On further investigation I found that access
to kmix was refused, as was access to the device for playing wav files and
midi files (these previously did work). Having a look at the permissions on
/dev/audio and /dev/mixer I found that they had r/w permission for my
Civilisation user account only (I don't recall changing any permissions). I
have changed this so that all users have r/w access (chmod 666) however I'm
still left with the following problem.

My Civisation user account works fine.
All other user accounts can play cd's without a problem but cannot play wav
or midi files (Civ-CTP has no sound). Cannot open output device error
messages appear.
Root works fine.

What devices and permissions must I configure so that all users can operate
sound. I am using a single AWE64 card. Will re-running sndconfig help at
all (I haven't tried this yet).

One last question - does anyone out there use SLab, and can you give me any
assistance in setting up the programme?

Aaron

[newbie] Root instability

1999-08-19 Thread Aaron deRozario

I have noticed that when using the root account KDE seems to crash with an
alarming regularity. I have noticed this when copying files and
directories, right clicking on items in the /dev directory and a few other
things. What happens is the icons on screen go black and all kfm windows
stop working. The panel works in a strange way. You can launch programmes
from the K button - so long as it doesn't involve opening a kfm directory
(eg using Disk NAvigator). OPening terminals works fine. No programs can
be launched directly off the panel, though you are still able to change
desktops.

Logging out and relogging in as root yields a desktop without icons, and the
same problems involving launching programs. The only way to solve the
problem, that I have found, is to reboot. When logging back in as root
there is a 0k sized core dump, which I delete.

This has only ever occurred when running in root. Does anyone else ever
have this problem or have any idea what the cause is?

I have tried using the kfm(super-user) to perform root operations from user
accounts, however after entering the password the programme crashes without
giving any kind of error message. Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks

Aaron

[newbie] Linux compatible Modem and sound card WILL NOT work under Linux. Why???

1999-08-19 Thread The Postman

My modem and sound card WILL NOT work in Linux. I have reset the bios which
made everything get new IRQ addresses and such. But that just don't seem to
work.

I still can NOT get Linux-Mandrake fully installed.

I can not seem to get the modem working after setting up the sound card. I
just don't understand it.

The modem works very good untill the sound card is configured under SETUP.

Once the sound card is setup. The modem seems to get less dominant and
stops working. Here is what I get when I type "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf"

[root@localhost /root]# isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
Board 1 has Identity 53 00 1e 1a 58 28 00 8c 0e: CTL0028 Serial No 1972824
[checksum 53]
Board 2 has Identity 8b d2 b1 bd ab 31 30 72 56: USR3031 Serial No
3534863787 [checksum 8b]
/etc/isapnp.conf:46 -- Fatal - resource conflict allocating IRQ5 (see
/proc/interrupts)
/etc/isapnp.conf:46 -- Fatal - Error occurred executing request 'IRQ 5' ---
further action aborted
[root@localhost /root]#

One of the errors say "see /proc/interrupts". Well, the /proc/interrupts
file is size zero and contains no data. Now what?

My BIOS says that my modem is at IRQ 11 on COM 3 (ttyS2). Well, when I boot
the computer, Linux puts out a line durring bootup that says...

ttyS2 at 0X3E8 (IRQ=4) is a 16550A

I don't understand how this can be possible. How can the Linux operating
system see the modem at "IRQ 4" when the bios says it is at IRQ 11. The
settings in Windows 98 even say that the modem is operating at IRQ 11.

The bios also says that the sound card is set to operate at IRQ 5. So how
could there be a resource conflict? If there is a resource conflict, why
doesn't it get reported when I run Windows 98? Windows 98 says that the
sound card is running on IRQ 5. That jives exactly with the bios. Windows
98 runs VERY smooth. LINUX is like a rough and rocky road. Is
Linux-Mandrake 6.0 trying to invent its own bios and environment?

What MUST I do to fix this mess? What information can I provide to help fix
this thing? I am writing to MandrakeSoft and they are VERY slow at responding.

Modem: Sportster 56K internal PnP
Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 PnP.

Re: [newbie] Networking

1999-08-19 Thread Civileme

If I understand you correctly, you have a P90 linux box and it has a modem
to an ISP while you have Ethernet connections between the computers.
Well, define your gateway device as ppp0, and leave gateway address
blank
No real reason to set up dhcp with so few machines.
Make your Linux box look at eth0 as 10.0.0.1
On your windows box
Right Click Network Neighborhood
Click TCP/IP and select "properties"
Give it the IP address 10.0.0.2
Tell it the gateway is 10.0.0.1
Disable WINS reolution
Type in the IPs of the DNS servers your ISP gave you after you ENABLE
DNS and put in the hostname of your linux box. If your ISP didn't
give you any, run a traceroute to, say, 195.186.30.244 and pick stuff six
or seven hops from you, likely to be near the internet backbone and put
THOSEIP numbers in your DNS list.
Then take a browse to
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/IPCHAINS-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.1
And those instructions should make everything work, provided you have
set up Kppp properly for your modem
If you want to get fancy...
Make this file, or one similar to it
#!/bin/sh
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
and Save it in the appropriate /etc/rc.d/ directory or Save it to your
home directory, chmod to make it executable and drag it to the Autostart
folder on the K desktop.
After all of that, your windows machine should be able to access the
internet with little to no protection from all the exploits out there.
Since you have the URL to look at ipchains, read on and discover how to
protect it better and maybe eliminate some of the annoyances from imgis.com
and doubleclick.net from that important resource.
Good luck

And, further, go to
http://www.httptech.com/ppa/
The driver works for files output by ghostscript and makes the files
to be sent to the printer.
It uses what HPcalls "Performance Printing Architecture", a system
that puts more of the calculation for printing on the CPU and allows the
printer to have les hardware. HPdeveloped drivers for Windows,
and left it at that. They ALSO decided that they would keep the protocols
secret. What is displayed on this web page is what someone could
intuit from looking at the files sent to the printer, and it works for
the 720 (710), 820, and 1000 series in BW if you also use the ghostscript
filter and you have the printer direct connected to the linux machine.
This case is different, since NTknows how to handle the printer

I cannot get it to recognize my modem or sound card.

I have found out the my modem is on Com3 IRQ11 but have found no way..
even with everyones help of finding it or configuring it.

As for my sound card it is found by linux when it boots.. but it aborts
putting it in memory because it is sharing an IRQ with another item on the
PCI bus.. which is fine in windows but not in linux I guess..

So thanks all for your help.. but this is just not hardware friendly enough
for my current system.

I guess if I want to run Linux I am going to have to build a specific box
with all the specific hardware able to be detected and run.

OOPS! Sorry Sevatio, forget that last reply. Just
re-read your message and I believe your problem has to do with Boot Magic not
being able to see the partitions you re-created with Disk Druid. You're gonna
have to delete all the Linux partitions with Partition Magic, and then re-create
and format them. Then re-install with Druid and simply edit each partition to
set the mount points, don't do any further partitioning! You can format them
again if you wish to be sure the filesystem's ok. Be sure to install LILO in the
root partition and not the MBR, and set it to boot only Linux. Hope this solves
your problem!

[newbie] lnx4win problems...

1999-08-19 Thread Dan Brown

Two days ago, I downloaded the mandrake60-2 iso image, figuring that
it'd be interesting to play with it. Since I don't want to do anything
to my existing 5.3 installation, though (and also since I'm actually
installing it on a work computer), I tried installing it using lnx4win.

The installation itself went normally, if a bit slowly, with no
errors reported. However, when I tried starting the system, I got lots
of errors of the form, "kernel-module version mismatch. ..was compiled
for kernel version 2.2.9-19mdk while this kernel is version
2.2.9-27mdk." The affected modules seem to be loop.o, fat.o, and vfat.o
(though each is listed twice, once in /boot and once in /boot and
/boot/modules). The modules in /boot are compiled for 2.2.5-14BOOT; the
others are compiled for 2.2.9-19mdk.

It would seem to me that modules from one 2.2.9 build should work as
well as modules for another, but this apparently is not the case.

I don't have any other Linux installation on this computer. What
can I do to get this one to boot with lnx4win?

Re: [newbie] Modem difficulties

1999-08-19 Thread Rick Fry

I'm sorry Gavin but as one that just left a position as technical support
for a medium sized ISP after almost 2 years, I can say that most of my
customers are smart enough to not expect that mythical 56K speed. For the
most part, we're aware that the speed is multidependent in that it comes
close to the restrictions on DSL connects. Things like number of pairs in
any given cable, the ambient temperature around those pairs and the
possibility of noise from outside influences including the number of birds
sitting on any given cable and how many of their toes are touching the
wires. They would, however, like to achieve at least 33.6K or at least the
average 40K connect speeds.

Also, you *nix guys that seem to have nothing but bad things to say about
Windows are slowly realizing what some of us are finding out about *nix in a
more pronounced way. Obviously these vendors, such as Diamond and others,
that refuse to write drivers for *nix must know something that we don't.
Somebody once commented about the plug 'n play capabilities of Windows. I'm
finding that it's even less pronounced in *nix. So, quitcherbeleakin. Some
of us don't really care how to make a watch. We just want to know what time
it is. So, forget all these .config files we seem to have to manually edit
with wonderful devices such as VI. [BLEAH!!] When you can make a version of
this Linux, whether it be Red Hat or Mandrake, that's better at plug 'n play
than Windows, maybe more of us will start using it on a more pronounced
basis.

It's starting to sound like the OS/2 wars we used to get into years ago.
Then, let's not forget about CP/M even a few more years ago that I owned 3
different copies of that were totally incompatible with each other. Forget
the competition. [Oh yeah, I'm leaving my position as technical support
because of an acquisition and a merger. Not because of anything I did.]

[newbie] Stoopid Newbie SLRN question

1999-08-19 Thread Paul Hendrick

Hi there,
Im trying to get slrn working. Form the konsole, I do:
"slrn" ENTER
I get:
"Reading startup file /usr/lib/slrn/slrn/rc. You need to set the NNTPSERVER
environment variable to your server name.
Example (csh):setenv NNTPSERVER my.news.server
slrn fatal error:
Unable to select server/post object."

My ISPs news server is news.btinternet.com, so what command to I use to set up
the NNTP server?
:( I miss MP Gravity

Also, is there a dialer that supports the CHAP protocol, which will auto
dial/redial and display my connection speed and IP? Kppp only seems to show
the port speed.

more pronounced way. Obviously these vendors, such as Diamond and
others,
that refuse to write drivers for *nix must know something that we
don't.

And what, do you think, would that be? I can tell you one thing
that we all know: there are more Windows users than there are Linux
users (duh!). So, where will Diamond's efforts most efficiently be
invested? In Windows development, so that a given amount of effort will
have the greatest return. They may or may not be right, but I expect
that's their motivation. In any case, I'd be willing to bet that it has
nothing to do with the capabilities of the OS.

it is. So, forget all these .config files we seem to have to manually
edit
with wonderful devices such as VI. [BLEAH!!]

You know, there _are_ more intuitive editors out there--lots of
them, in fact. I like pico, but kedit is pretty good as well. Of
course, there aren't that many cases any more where you _have_ to
manually edit the .conf files, as software like linuxconf and others
tend to work as well. Also, I guess this means you've never had to hack
the Windows registry?

When you can make a version of
this Linux, whether it be Red Hat or Mandrake, that's better at plug
'n play
than Windows, maybe more of us will start using it on a more
pronounced
 basis.

"So, quitcherbeleakin" yourself. Linux is getting much better at
PnP, though it admittedly isn't to the level of Windows yet. Windows
isn't anywhere near the level of the Mac, either, so why are you holding
Windows out as the holy grail of PnP?

Thanks!

Why do you think Bootmagic
does not show Linux as one of the options before having to use the Advanced
option?

Hi Sevatio. Just go the BootMagic Configuration
utility in the Start Menu, click on Add, and select Linux. You may want to
select the advanced button and choose the partition (root) where you
installed Lilo, although that shouldn't be necessary.

My problem:Bootmagic only displays the win98
partition.

Here's what I've
done:I used partition
magic to make room for linux along side win98. Then I used
Disk-Druid during the installation process to make additional partitions
over the linux-native partition created by partition magic. Also
along the way, the linux installation process asked to format the new
partitions and I chose yes.

Question:How do I get bootmagic to display both the win98 and linux
partition?

Sincerely, Sevatio

Towards the end you will see something like

  Look for the line
  DefaultColorDepth 8

  Change it to 16..

  Save it..

  Shutdown, reboot.

You should only need to reboot if you run a graphical login - otherwise
exit X, then restart X. The settings take effect the next time X starts.

Even if you're running the graphical login, a Control-Alt-Backspace will
restart the X server with the new settings.

Squid but other then that nothing.. And Squid being a bitch to work with..
Was wondering if you knew of a better way or a Guide for SQUID"

rpm -Uvh squid-whatever
/etc/rc.d/init.d/squid start

Then go to the Windows machine, open Internet Explorer, goto View,
Options, click on the Connection tab and goto the Proxy setup. Enter
the IP number of your Linux box and port 3128.

If you haven't already setup your TCP/IP properties, you'll need to do
that also. Just make sure that the Linux machine and the Windows
machine both show on the same network and all should be fine.

[newbie] Motherboard question

1999-08-19 Thread John May

I was wondering if anybody else is using the Abit BH6 motherboard. I am
having a problem with Linux where the mouse works fine in the console (text
only, not in Xwin) and then when I start Xwin my mouse craps out and just
jumps around all over the screen. I have tried stopping the GPM service and
then restarting Xwin and that doesn't help, I have also tried different
mouse protocols. BTW, the mouse is a PS/2 Generic Mouse (intellimouse
clone). I have another linux box with Mandrake on it and the mouse works
fine on that one, so I was wondering if it may be the motherboard, this is a
new machine.

RE: [newbie] Not getting anywhere!!

1999-08-19 Thread Aaron deRozario

I had a similar video configuration problem. The default setting
Xconfigurator was choosing was giving a black screen with blackish icons (I
think that means that the refresh rates don't synch). My problem was solved
by manually choosing my display settings in Xconfigurator. Another thing I
tried is reducing the type of monitor to one not quite so good (in custom
monitor section). My monitor, being on the cheaper end of the scale does
not work well at its maximum settings. By reducing the setting the picture
quality improved considerably.

I suffered similar problems using my hardware with Windows 95. My monitor
does not perform well at its maximum refresh rates etc and I have terrible
problems under Win95 with my AWE64 soundcard. If the soundcard is enabled
in the device manager, Windows will not boot. I have to boot with the
soundcard disabled and then manually turn on the soundcard using Device tab
- a real pain in the arse if you forget to turn it off at the end of the
session (Windows crashes on startup, reboot into safe mode, turn soundcard
off, reboot again).

I might have problems with sound permissions with my Linux box, but at least
the card makes noise!

My sentiments exactly. I finally got my video configuration to go 1024x768

 tad difficult to read.

Re: [newbie] Linux compatible Modem and sound card WILL NOT work underLinux. Why???

Sorry, but that don't work. I have alreay done that. I get "Modem is busy"

I still can NOT get Linux-Mandrake fully installed.

I took a few big snips out of the middle of the message, it doesn't
change the advice I'm going to give you. Linux does not go searching
for IRQs for serial ports like Windows does. If your modem is at IRQ
11, use the setserial utility to tell Linux what IRQ your modem is
using.

Here's the command you'd use:

   setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 11

After that, everything should be fine. If it all works, add that
command to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local and it will be executed
automatically everytime you boot.

Let us know what happens...
