[newbie] Partition sizes?

2000-03-03 Thread Lothar Mandrake

Steve,
If his only partitions for linux (other than swap) are / and /usr (I
believe
he meant/ rather than /root),

Yes, that is indeed what I meant. I am sorry that I expressed myself
so badly.

won't /opt be inside the / partition? That's
the usual place for te third party software, like SO he's thinking of
using.
Might that not make / fill up more quickly.

That is my concern. Are there any figures avaiable on how much space
is taken up in every file system in the default installation? What I mean
is, are there any numbers for how big the /, the /usr, the /etc, the /opt,
the /var etc. partitions absolutely have to be in order to accomodate a full
installation, everything included?

Perhaps a separate /opt and /home
might help. any thoughts?
Mike

 Perhaps I should make separate /etc, /var, /opt, /usr, /, and so on,
for every file system? I'd feel pretty silly if I had made one partition
too small and eventually had to reformat and reinstall the entire system,
just because a partition turned out to be too small. That is why I want to
do this right from the beginning.

Some of the applications I plan to install I guess will end up in /usr.
I thought this was where all third-party software was installed, but
apparently some will end up in /opt? Is this true? In that case perhaps I
should make a separate /opt instead of a separate /usr?

I am grateful for all help.

2000-03-03 Thread burlingtonj

Hmm. You serious? I wasn't aware or that. But then again, I never used
suze. Besides, isn't mandrake a redhat-clone compiled for pentiums, with some
extra paranoid security stuff trashed in?

Anyway, If you insist, and it is really so, then I must admit I was wrong (never
said I know everything; never even said I know much). But still I have my
serious doubts. Isn't it more probable that redhat and suze just try to throw
their binaries/libraries in different places, and that the other distro doesn't
have these paths in their path/lib-path? Coz I know not every distro uses the
 same paths for their binaries/libs...
Yes that was it what i mean. Different distris use different paths for
installation. I thought it is possible that in Mandrake 7.0 some paths are
different to mdrk 6.1. The packet format itself is the same on all
distributions (like zip, tar,...). You can install every rpm from every distri
but when you do that you can get in some big trouble e.g you install a
suse rpm on a red hat system.

In the meantime I downloaded the new version from kdevelop and some
other tools from redhat and other sites (always redhat compatible rpms)
and now all works like it should.

Sorry for my stupid question.

After all, RPM is RPM. AFAIK it just contains some files, along with the info on
where exactly each file should go, and some post-install scripts.
Yes. and thats why I asked.

Of course, throwing libs/bins in different directories than the sysetm expects
is a form of incompatibility too.
Yes thats what i mean.

Well, I'll look into it. Was about time I started to understand a bit more 'bout
the internal workings of rpms myself. Thanx for the advice.
No you were right and I too, but I should next time better describe
what my problem is ;)

[newbie] Printer working; no sound modules

2000-03-03 Thread rose

Hey , I finally got my printer working!!
It didn't take a degree in rocket science either!
I noticed that as i was booting up, during POST, the Parallel Port was
listed as 'disabled'.
I thought that was really strange because the printer works fine in
Windows, but I couldn't get it to work in MDK ( didn't even detect it).
I went into the CMOS, changed the setting for the Parallel Port (to the
'Setup Default') booted into MDK and saw messages that the parport0 was
detected. After logging in, starting X, I started 'DrakConf"went to
printer setup and everything fell into place, WHEW.

Now to the problem at hand.
Also ,as MDK was loading , I saw an error message stating that it
couldn't find the sound module. when I run "sndconfig" i get a message
" The modules used for your card (SBLive), emu10k1.o, is not currently
in your module search path. Please verify that your kernel modules are
currently installed.
O.K. so now what do i do (after i download the emu10k1 tar driver from

2000-03-03 Thread Bill Mote

Well, it's like the subject says. I upgraded
my system from Mandrake 6.0 to 7.0 last night -- "recommended" option.
It took some time on my P90, but everything appeared to go well. I tried
to access my website and now all I get is URL / not found (Basic 404
error).

After restarting my system Apache wasn't loaded and
was failing on a missing /etc/httpd/conf/mime.types.
/etc/httpd/conf/apache_mime.types was present so I cp'd it to ./mime.types and
httpd started successfully.

In viewing the error logs it would appear that the
root of my server is pointed at /etc/httpd/htdocs when prior to the upgrade it
was pointed at /home/httpd/html. Does any of this make sense? Your
help is greatly appreciated.

[newbie] Network Card Problem...Urgent!

2000-03-03 Thread Michael Haney

I have tried several ways to get my Intel PRO/100+ Management Adapter to
work in Linux-Mandrake 7.0(the downloaded version) and I have had no
success.

I downloaded the Linux drivers for my NIC from Intel's web site and
followed the instructions to install it, but I keep getting eth0
initialization [failed] at boot up. i have tried editing
/etc/conf.modules and /etc/sysconf/hwconf to reflect the new drivers but
that did not work. The newly installed drivers DO NOT show up in
Lothar, and Lothar and Linux show the card as a different model with
incorrect I/O port and IRQ settings then what Win98 shows the card
atall other devices show settings identical to what Win98 Device
Manager shows(my sound card and video card).

How can I install the drivers if Intel's instructions do not work for
Linux-Mandrake?

Intel says to extract the files from the tar.gz file...
Goto the /scr directory that will be created and run 'make'...(this
creates the modules file 'e100.o')
After that test the modules with insmod e100.o...
Install the modules with 'make install'...
Load the modules by running 'modprobe e100'...

They say the modules should install and work immediately.

If there is different way please let me know? How can I get the
driver to show up in Lothar?

[newbie] Do not run PrettyPark.exe

2000-03-03 Thread Michael Haney

The file 'PrettyPark.exe' is the installer for the Trojan virus
W32/Pretty.worm.unp.

This virus uses email programs to spread itself around to the first 30
people in your address book. It also transmits detailed system and
network information to the author that could be use to hack into your
computer system or LAN.

If you ran this attachment update your anti virus software to detect and
clean the virus. Then, use the attached UNDO.REG file to clean up
your Windows Registry because removing the virus will render some of your
programs useless if you just delete the virus. When you try to run
a program after removing W32/Pretty.worm.unp your system will try to
locate the file 'files32.vxd' which is the virus program. Importing
this Registry fix will correct that problem.

Good Luck.

can run like any user or root as well. I need help.

- In other side, I want to know what is an appropiate size for my /
partition. Now it is 350 MB (to optimize) but It has only 45 MB free
and the /temp partition may be require more size.

[newbie] Loosing ones partitions

2000-03-03 Thread condeuser

Hi penguinistas,

Not sure if this is a Linux or Windoze problem. Thoe,I suspect, the user
needs a thorough debugging.

Recently installed Mandrake 6.1 dualboot with Win 95 on an IBM deskstar 13.5
Gb(new)
disk- 2.5 for 95 and 4, I think, for Linux. .All seemed fine and bigfun
seemed assured with trying to coming to terms with Linux.

Then I had the opportunity to update to Win 98 (it seems a bit more stable)
and I did a clean install and after 2 days of installing programmes and
service packs I tried to boot into Linux without result. Linux will not
even install as it thinks the whole disk is Fat32;thoe 98 still thinks its
only 2.5 in size. I ran disk doctor from Norton Utilities 4 and it finds an
error in the mbr which it tries and fails to correct. Unfortunately the
Partition-It I have does not work with disks larger then 8 Gb's so I'm at a
loss.

Is their anything I can try before wiping the disk and starting afresh with
hours and hours reinstalling as,doubtless,my well deserved reward.

   Thanks

   Conor

all the above works fine under NT4.

I have tried to go the expert route but I am not
sure that I ever got all the settings right, since I have not been able to find
out where the settings are documented.

The install starts normally, finds the card and
identifies it correctly, but locks when trying to load the driver for it.
If I force it skip loading the driver, the install continues on until it comes

[newbie] Server Partitions

2000-03-03 Thread Victor Richardson

I am setting up a Mandrake 7.0 file/print server on an IBM Netfinity(PII
350, 128 meg, 9.1 Gig SCSI-2) for our office w/ 15 users and was
wondering what the best partition sizes would be? The only major
software that we plan on adding to the Mandrake distro(for now) is some
type of collaboration sofware like Netscape calendar/scheduling. I'll
be doing an expert install(even though I'm not) and only installing the
services that we absolutely need, although I will include KDE and Gnome
because they are so much easier to deal with for file and system
maintenance.

From reading the archives I guess that I need; swap(128 megs), /boot(20
megs), /(?), /usr(600?), /usr/local(1,500?), /tmp(50?), /var(100?), and
/home(the rest). The part that I don't get is what exactly gets put into
"/"? Does /boot hold the kernel and / hold all the other software like
Samba, etc? And then any software I add after the installation goes into
/usr/local?

Please feel free to offer suggestions,

Victor

is called drive span if your running fat 32 what this
does is take two hard drives and make them into one
the other is drive to drive this is a partioning tool
both canbe down loaded as share ware but becarful of
the drive to drive it crashed my system and the techs
dont know why so talk to them before you use drive to
drive but there are several partioning tools out there
usually they just creat another space in your drive
let me get back to you on some other software names i
cant find the one i had in mind all so it wouldnt be a
bad idea to back up yor system if you have a cd rom
burner or a jazz drive or store your drive online
there are many free sites theres also a program called
go back that will restore your hard drive after a

data thats been erased it actually takes alot to
premently remove data from your hard drive it still in
there of course all of this is moot if your running

RE: [newbie] internet thru windows...

2000-03-03 Thread Mike Perry

Yo Tomie!

I have my network at home setup to do just that!

On my windoze machine I use a nice program called Winroute
which enables it to operate as a router with caching, proxy cascadeing,
etc etc...
There are heaps of proxy/router programs for windoze on the net, some of
which are freeware, and the rest of them can be "made to be freeware" :-)
However, if you have the 2nd edition win98 you can do it without any
additional
software, though I have no idea how as I use win95OSR2.5 cause it is much
less bloat than win98.

On the linux end of it you just have to set your gateway DNS to the
winblows box.
and setup netscrape to use a proxy which is your winblows box.

Hope this helps you, though you will need to read a few docs before you will
get it going I am sure.

Cheers:

Get a grip -- was: Re: [newbie] C:\CoolProgs\Pretty Park.exe

2000-03-03 Thread Bill Mote

Let the BillMan help you guys out a little. 1) This is the wrong place to
send your virus e-mail SPAM 2) Until you get a flash announcement from
ZDNet, Symantec, Network Solutions, etc. then it's also just not true.
There's no way on this Earth that you or your e-mail 'friends' (and their
friends, and their friends, and so-on, and so-on...) have identified any
kind of virus that the big guys aren't going to alert someone about.

Now, have you ever really thought about these messages? What is a virus'
intent? Usually to cause some kind of problem with the machines it comes in
contact with, right? In a way, the very message you sent is a virus. It's
being forwarded to e-mail lists, it's been sent to everyone in your address
book, and the process continues. What does that do? Well, 1) it causes
more traffic around the net 2) it causes e-mail servers to work harder 3)
it pisses everyone that receives a copy off -- especially when it's
completely off topic for a support list. I have plenty of idiot e-mail
friends that are/are going to send me this very same message. I hardly need
it to come to me via a high volume list serve!

steps down from soap box

What you should do. You have a larger responsibility than to simply forward
on e-mails. If you think the threat is real then you need to hit the Virus
Protection manufacturer's pages and do the research. There's also a page,
address escapes me, that deals specifically with all these *FAKE* virus
alerts. Don't be a carrier/transmitter! Figure out if the threat is real.
If it is you'll find official announcements that can be forwarded that will
also include instructions on how to exterminate the virus. Be smart. Be
safe. Be diligent in your e-mail forwarding.

2000-03-03 Thread Piero Caracciolo

Has anybody got an idea of how to format a classic diskette (1.4 Mb) on a
LS-120 driver?

In my case, the driver is given name /dev/hdc. fdformat doesn't work, not
even if I rm /dev/fd0 or /dev/fd0H1440 and change them into symbolic links
to /dev/hdc. The result is /dev/fd0: not a floppy device (which is at the
same true, because now /dev/fd0 points to /dev/hdc, and not true, because
/dev/hdc in the LS-120 driver, and cand handle floppies).

fdisk and cfdisk didn't wor either; sfdisk worked, in a way, because after
I was able to mount the floppy, but did'nt erase the content of the
floppy. So I think it did something useful, like creating a partition
table, but did not really format the floppy.

Re: [newbie] son of bitch virus spreader

2000-03-03 Thread Michael

Can FBI do something about this? My computer club members sent to me
multiple happy virus before. Sometimes it resides in your hardware though
you don't execute the file when you use Unix to open the mail. It does the
same even when you use Unix not Windows. In Unix, the virus stays dormant
until it gets chances to spread. I just want to go right ahead and sue this
son of bitch. How about class act??? Let's get some funds out to run
Mandrade Org. from that son of bitch from hell.

Re: [newbie] Printer working; no sound modules

2000-03-03 Thread Eunice Thompson

UPDATE
I (sigh) reinstalled MDK again (10th time?) but I finally got everything
working ( so far). It took some tweaking, but I think it was worth it.
My problems with the sound stemmed from the fact that the sound driver
emu10k1,was written for the 2.2.14-15mdk kernel version and at the time of
yesterday's post I was running the 2.2.14-1mdklinus version. It seems that
depending on the type and class of installation that I initially selected,
determined which kernel version was the default. I never performed the
'recommended' install, because I wanted to have control over using LILO (I
don't use it, I use a floppy disk to boot up MDK) So I've used the custom,
normal installation and version 2.2.14-15mdk was the default. here, my
CD/cdwriter needed tweaking (i.e. change IDE to SCSI emulation) but I kept
getting error messages I had no rule to *make* when I tried to run xconfig,
or menuconfig, just config (following the instructions on the linuxgurus
site)
So I reinstalled , chose, expert-normal,
and just blindly selected everything.
here it seems that the default kernel was 2.2.14-1mdklinus. I could make
kernel compilations, get my CD drives working, but no sound ( this is where
I was yesterday). So I downloaded the tarball driver, followed the
instructions, and at the end, got a load of error messages, the prime one
being that "the emu10xxx, driver used is for kernel v.2.2.14-15mdk, and
you're using 2.2.14-1mdklinus". I must admit that I tried searching for the
appropriate driver, and even read a mini how-to, to correct these error
messages, but it began to get extremely complicated, and yes frustration
set in, so... I reformatted the partition and yes, reinstalled MDK. This
time I chose the expert-development route and paid extremely close attention
to what was being installed (I'm sure I included stuff that I probably won't
use), especially if it had to do with the kernel. SO I rebooted and watched
the scrolling messages fly by, the only error message that I got had to do
with the CD drives having bad blocks. I had version 2.2.14-15mdk again, with
sound and no access to the CD drives. This time though I was able to "make
xconfig" and recompile the kernel and .
WHEW, everything so far is working Music , printer , internet. I know that
the reason why I chose to reformat/install so many times is because I didn't
really have anything to lose , just time and internet configurations. But
everything appears to be working... so far.

Subject: [newbie] Printer working; no sound modules

O.K. so now what do i do (after i download the emu10k1 tar driver from
 Creative)

LB Try http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ByName.html
LB This is normally where I start when I need to find something (and it normally

LB You might also find something like that at the kde homepage.
I found a step by step installation for RedHat 6.0 (Madrake 6.1 is

LB Did you check on your installation cd? If not there, try rpmfind or kde

Yes in the meantime I found that site on my own, it is great !!!
I found there some other interesting programms but most of them
need additional packets that don't come with the mandrake cd.
You have to search for the additional libs, programms, and they
need again additional packets, that's anoying. Is there a
tool that automatically downloads missing packets when a new rmp
is installed that would be a great help.

Try replacing your ATI 128 video card with another video card (it could be

I am trying to install 7.02 and it always locks up after it detects my

Machine info
Motherboard - Abit BP6 with 2 400 Celrons
Adaptec 2940u2w, 400h, interrupt 5, id 7
256 meg ram
three scsi drives and jazz drive
soundblaster live
ATI 128 w/ 32 meg ram
Netgear FA310TX ethernet

all the above works fine under NT4.

I have tried to go the expert route but I am not sure that I ever got
all the settings right, since I have not been able to find out where
the settings are documented.

The install starts normally, finds the card and identifies it
correctly, but locks when trying to load the driver for it. If I
force it skip loading the driver, the install continues on until it
comes time to select the location to install and there are no drives
to load it on. (As would be expected.)

Thanks in advance for your help suggestions.

Subject: [newbie] Install Mandrake 7.02 - install lockup with a
Adaptec 2040u2w

I am trying to install 7.02 and it always locks up after it detects
my Adaptec 2940u2w and tries to install the driver.

  Machine info
  Motherboard - Abit BP6 with 2 400 Celrons
  Adaptec 2940u2w, 400h, interrupt 5, id 7
  256 meg ram
three scsi drives and jazz drive
  soundblaster live
  ATI 128 w/ 32 meg ram
  Netgear FA310TX ethernet

all the above works fine under NT4.

I have tried to go the expert route but I am not sure that I ever
got all the settings right, since I have not been able to find out
where the settings are documented.

 Hi penguinistas,

Not sure if this is a Linux or Windoze problem. Thoe,I suspect, the user
 needs a thorough debugging.

Recently installed Mandrake 6.1 dualboot with Win 95 on an IBM deskstar
13.5
 Gb(new)
disk- 2.5 for 95 and 4, I think, for Linux. .All seemed fine and bigfun
seemed assured with trying to coming to terms with Linux.

Then I had the opportunity to update to Win 98 (it seems a bit more
stable)
and I did a clean install and after 2 days of installing programmes and
service packs I tried to boot into Linux without result. Linux will not
even install as it thinks the whole disk is Fat32;thoe 98 still thinks its
only 2.5 in size. I ran disk doctor from Norton Utilities 4 and it finds
an
error in the mbr which it tries and fails to correct. Unfortunately the
Partition-It I have does not work with disks larger then 8 Gb's so I'm at
a
 loss.

Is their anything I can try before wiping the disk and starting afresh
with
hours and hours reinstalling as,doubtless,my well deserved reward.

Thanks

I think 350 Mb is too small. How large is your disk?

I sure hope that suggests something to someone, other than that I have

Dear Lane,
It's very difficult to help you, if you don't even know what did you do
that resulted in yours being stuck.
I would suggest you to reinstall everyhing from scratch and that upon
installation you define four different partitions, in that order: /, /swap,
/usr/local/, /opt, /home, so that in future, if you have to reinstall (or
upgrade)you keep everything apart from / and /swap, where will be istalled
programs and packages that will be peculiar to you, and that you won't like
to reinstall.
Once you are finished with the installation, you take a notebook and -
everytime you change something - you write it down, and you do it quickly,
before you forget what you have done. That will enable you 1) to ask for
help, 2) to undo the changes, 3) to find again, quickely, the mooves that
give good results.
Apart form this, if you change the contents of a file, do save its pristine
contents first. For instance, if you modify file /hell/murder do first cp
/hell/murder /hell/murder.old.

You will see: life will be much easier.

Yours frindly,

I have read in several handbooks that one should always install windows
first, then Linux, because Windows creates this sort of problems,
especially Win 98.

Now, I think you could handle it the foll. way. Make a fake upgrading: boot
on Linux installation Cd, choose expert mode, confirm the partitions you
have, istall one small package (or delete one and reinstall it), then say
go!. This would reinstall LILO and you might boot. If partition tables are
corrupted, though, this wouldn't be enough. In this case I don't know what
to suggest you, apart from reinsalling everything...

[newbie] Word Perfect 8 for Linux install problem

2000-03-03 Thread Michelle Schneider

I downloaded Word Perfect yesterday. It unpacked normally. When I tried to
run the file called 'Runme' it said there was nothing to do. I ended up doing
a manual install (running install.wp). I thought it installed everything ok,
but the file xwp was not installed. I cannot run Word Perfect without it.

Any ideas?

If you can find a site that has the directories from the 6.1 CD instead

You might have to adjust settings on the card. I don't remember if they
are on Adaptec's support pages or in a HOW-TO for linux. You might need
the latest bios for the card too. Check to see if there is a readme
with info on the CD.

Re: [newbie] Re: [Cooker] Supermount problems...

2000-03-03 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Brianyep, supermount works fine here. Two floppies (1.44
1.2) a cdrom (scsi), and a zip 100 (also scsi). The cdrom
ejects fine and never locks closed. IDE ls-120 does not work
with supermount, so it is used the normal Linux way.

Mankrake 7.0 has a bug (evidently not fixed in in 7.0v2) whereby for a
CD-RW it correctly sets up the LILO parameters to tell it to use
ide-scsi emulation (necessary for CD-RWs under Linux) but fails to make
the corresponding change to the /dev/cdrom (or in your case
 /dev/cdrom2) links.

 Just

rm /dev/cdrom2
ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom2

(Verify that the /dev/scd0 is the correct device in your case)

and you should be all set for the CD-RW.

As for the zip drive, are you trying to mount MS-DOS zips or do you
have ext2-formatted zips? Also, I'd check the /dev/zip device; if you
have standard zip disks I believe that I recall (from years ago when I
used a zip drive) that the it's /dev/pda3 (or /dev/hdc3 or
whatever--the third partition anyway--that is active on a zip drive as
factory-formatted. You might want to verify where /dev/zip points,
too. Since I know that's the problem with the CD-RW it's a likely
culprit with the zip drive as well.

In other news, has anybody actually had "supermount" do anything
*useful* for them? It seems to auto-mount ok for me once, but it
doesn't auto-unmount, and ordinary users can't umount them, either, so
I have to go into superuser to just to change the #@$! CD. For this
reason, I've just disabled supermount on my system and use a more
conventional fstab with the "user" option set on all removable devices.

Where is doc on "supermount"? There's no man page I can find other
than the one on the command but all it does it munge /etc/fstab, and
no "howtos" shipped with Mandrake 7.0, as far as I can tell.

[newbie] Small Issue Like Resolved Please

2000-03-03 Thread Brad Michael Veith

Hi,

I am using Mandrake 7.0 and I have two network cards installed
in my computer, one for Roadrunner and the other my LAN. One is
a NE2000 the other a 3com card, and I was wondering how to get it
to boot my network card at the command prompt instead of showing
root at my ip address for roadrunner, I edited conf.modules and switched
them and even switched them in the networking config in LinuxConf
under DrakConf. any help would be greatly appreciated. Also another
small minor issue is that all my or most of my apps under DrakConf
are coming up under text mode only or as if they are in a terminal
window, instead of the GUI for X windows that Mandrake installs?
I had to manually install DrakConf because it didnt get done during
the OS install and also installed a newer release of Linuxconf, i did
this before I reformatted and installed Linux and it worked fine but
now it seems to bring up this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad
