Re: [newbie] Discussion: Changes Found in Mandrake 7.1
Absolutely Jim. I entirely did away with my windows partition after dual-booting for a few months. A few weeks ago I re-installed wandows on a small drive because I realized that I missed Half-Life more then I hate wandows. Its sad I know. I will be stuck with a perfunctory windows partition until I either lose interest in games, wine works perfectly for all programs or all my favorite programs are ported to linux. Yep, that 3 gig wandows partition is going to be with me like a carbuncle for the forseeable future. Dacia --- Jim [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The reward comes when you get it working! Jim I downloaded installed mandrake 7.0 on the recommendation of a friend. I had a little bit of experience working in a Unix environment (FreeBSD I believe) but that was the extent of my familiarity. I spent about two weeks reading hardware lists and gathering information about IRQs, DMAs, Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates, etc etc. The initial install went just fine. The only things that didn't work right were my cdburner and I couldn't change any of my desktop settings in KDE (just learned why today from someones post to this list.). That didn't bother me particularly. Boy I was overwhelmed the first time I sat looking at a KDE desktop wanting to listen to a cd and read my email. Same problem happens now when I try to run kmixer - trouble accessing /dev/mixer. Changing the permissions 'seem' to help - at least mixer will run, but then, if I reboot - it all goes back to how it was. When running the sound config tool in Drakconf/Hardware, the test sound will play, but when clicking OK, an error message is displayed about accessing the directory you mentioned - /dev/dsp, even after your suggested change. Also, if in the KDE Control Center I try to display system information about sound, nothing is listed for any of the devices. I figure the driver has to be OK if CDs play, but I don't know where to look for this .wav problem, especially since all was fine in 7.02. Thanks, Aaron I thought I would be asking for help on this list, instead my first post is help... LILO loads Linux and allows other OSes on the SAME HD to boot. You would have to re-configure your BIOS to boot from drive D: (as Windoze sees it). Unfortuneately many BIOSes don't know how to boot from anything other than A:, C:, SCSI, and CD-ROM No not true at all. A lot of people miss one of Lilo's neatest tricks. It can remap the "hardware"... what? You ask... is he talking about? Lilo can make you D: drive your C: drive... it can also do this to your third and fourth hard drive. Using Lilo you can put an OS on each drive and have each available to boot. When the respective OS comes up, it will think it "booted" and "owns" the boot device... Huh? From the Man page for lilo.conf... disk=device-name Defines non-standard parameters for the specified disk. See section "Disk geometry" of user.tex for details. Especially useful is the `bios=' parame ter. The BIOS numbers your disks 0x80, 0x81, etc. and it is impossible to decide which Linux disk corresponds to which BIOS disk (since this depends on the BIOS setup, and on the type of BIOS), so if you have an unusual setup you need to state the correspondence between Linux disks and BIOS disks. For example, disk=/dev/sda bios=0x80 disk=/dev/hda bios=0x81 would say that your SCSI disk is the first BIOS disk, and your (primary master) IDE disk is the second BIOS disk. Clear as mud... What this means is that you can use a parameter such as disk=/dev/hdb bios=0x80 disk=/dev/hda bios=0x81 The above lines make the "D:" drive the "C:" drive and the "C:" drive the "D:" drive. Using the above, you can put Windows 98 on the second hard drive and boot to it after selecting WIN98 from Lilo... Windows comes up thinking it's on the C: drive (which it is not). You can further extend this trick quite a bit... read the man, mam. -JMS

Re: [newbie] Re-partitioning the hard disk
Hi Dick I have experienced the same problem and in my case it resulted from letting Mandrake's Diskdrake 'fiddle' with the partitions created by Partition Magic. The only solution that I found was to let Nortons DiskDoctor fix the partition tables, then resize the partitions again using Partition Magic 4,01. Mandrake Sofware suggested in January or February of this year to use a later version of their Diskdrake program instead of the one which was in release 7,0. But in my PC, there was no improvement. So from my experience, Mandrake's program is still unable to alter vfat or even linux partitions safely, in a way which allows other operating systems such as DOS/Windows to also use them. Ron

Hi Sandman, Chances are real good what you have here is a winmodem, i.e. junk that won't work with linux I take it that your modem is a internal model, if this is the case be advised that most current internal modems are winmodems. Winmodems utilize software based compression routines, as where very few internal, and all external modems do compression in the hardware As it stands right now what you need for linux is a "hardware" modem. The software compression routines used by winmodems are propritary to to maker of the modem, and thats the rub... For winmodems to work in linux you have to convince the maker of the modem to write drivers for linux. Lindy

Re: [newbie] some problems after new install
ok, I reformatted and reinstalled (again) thinking i might have missed something up during the installation. Now the mail problem seems to be fixed but i was still getting a connection refused message when i tried to telnet and ftp into my machine. I checked the /etc/inetd.conf file and telnet and ftp are not commented out so they should be running. One thing i did find was that mandrak apparently didnt set inetd up to be called and run in the /etc/rc.d scripts. I added it to rc3.d and rc5.d so that it would get started up when the computer came up and an now getting: telnet localhost Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.localdomain. Escape character is '^]' Connection closed by foreign host. Getting the same thing via ftp as well, connected then disconnected. Is there something else that i need to have running for these services to accept connections? ipchains has no rules in it other then in the forwarding section for masquerading (which works btw) and all policies are set to accept on input and output so the firewall shouldnt be blocking anything. Re: [newbie] DISCUSSION Authomatic Install
:~ 3) What about the three checkboxes? :~ :~Any particular reason for these 3 specific types of software? Did they cause :~more discussion/trouble? These three are just a proposal. I thought that even complete newbie must have some particular whishes which we should let him express, no matter how simple this particular install class may be. 1) "Games" popped up as one example in my mind. because it is a huge group of packages especially if you have Power Pack, and not everyone really wants them, but those who do really do. .-) 2) Server: because we do not want to include these on default (dangerous), yet I could imagine that having a quickdirty way of installing a server may be fine for some people: move the slider to "minimal install", click on "server apps", let go. Configure server apps in post-install and voila, a new server! 3) Disabled: This is new. I was asked by a blind guy if we could include some programs for blind and for people who have problems with hands. This chategory does not exist yet, but if we introduce it, it will do several "inteligent" things at once: 1) change the way programs are choosen. Obvious things to do would be lowering priority of all the fancy grafical stuff and highering the priority of easy to use programs. Probably also highering the priority of "sound" with respect to "view", too. 2) install additional programs which are ONLY usefull to blind people, like progs which can do something with braile terminals. Obviously, if a blind man has to do install by himself, you want to keep things as simple as possible for him, right(*)? I mean, you do not want to hide this option somewhere in the middle of expert install. So, add a checkbutton to "Authomatic" install and be done with it. I repeat - at the moment, this option exists only in my head, but our general opinion here is "well, if we can help them withouth having to change too much, why not?" - If anyone can think of other checkbuttons which would be better than these, no problem, but keep in mind: - Only a few buttons - Simple terms so that everyone can understand them - default is "no" - Should be something what is REALLY important to one class of people, while considered complete junk by others. - things like "software for tv cards" are going to be installed authomatically if we can recognise the card - no checkboxes needed. cu Denis (*) Blind people are not stupid, but they cannot see, and the install IS visually oriented. I suppose they do not apreciate things like trees, pop-up menues and color-coding at all. Things like "click here" (ooops, where is here?), "upper left side", "red button" and all other visually-oriented stuff do not make any sense if you are blind (unless you have a braille terminal, in which case left-right etc. do make sense.) -- - Dr. Denis Havlikhttp://www.ap.univie.ac.at/users/havlik Mandrakesoft||| e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Quality Assurance (@ @)(private: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) ---oOO--(_)--OOo- Newbies aren't necessarily stupid nor uninformed, just lacking in experience with this specific OS. I intention is to create a directory named say: /home/shared or similar in which these two users can drop the exchange files. As I remember if I make both of these users members of the same group the each is able to 'see' what the other is doing? or has in her directory. That is not an option in this case.. Suggestions are most welcome. Cheers. John -- -- New Zealand - Home of the Americas Cup --
[newbie] Install DOS 6.2 Windows98 and Linux-Mandrake 7.0 in same HD
Hello! The installation manuals do not say anything about the "cylinder 1024" problem. This is the /boot or /root have to be installed within the 1024th cylinder. I have Windows 98, DOS 6.2 and Linux-Mandrake 7.0 Air Version in my 13GB Quantum Fireball HD. First time I tried to install Mandrake Linux in an empty partition (after 9GB Windows partition), I got an error message in LILO installation (because /root is after cylinder 1024) and then I was not able to boot from HD (Linux and Windows). Fortunately there is a "magic" fdisk (DOS) command: fdisk /mbr that restores the MBR, and then I can boot Windows again from HD. Linux only boot from the diskete. I decided then start from the begining, because I do not have Partition Magic. I was not shure if I can use the DiskDrake to make a partition resize without destroying any data (in DOS partition). Do you know that? What I did: 1. I made one DOS FAT16 400MB partition (with dos fdisk) for DOS 6.2 and I installed it there (dos C: disk) 2. I made one DOS FAT16 16MB partition (with dos fdisk), without installing anything there (dos D: disk) 3. I made one FAT32 9GB partition (dos E: disk) (with W98 fdisk), and I installed Windows98 there. 6. I made one FAT16 1.5GB partition to put data to be shared by DOS, Linux and Windows98 After that I have deleted partion D: and make a new one smaller (6MB. I had to make a new one because Windows98 did not boot as disk D: (it has to be as disk E: as installed) The remaining space was for Linux: 7. I made 128MB swap partion 8. I made about 1.5GB for /root Then a got the 1024 error message, and created a partition after the dos D: partition, with 8MB for /boot (within cylinder 1024) Summary of partitions: hda1: DOS C: (400MB) - DOS 6.2 hda5: DOS D: (6MB)- Without data hda9: Linux /boot (8MB) hda6: DOS E: (9GB) - Windows 98 hda7: Linux /swap (128MB) hda8: Linux /root (1.5GB) With above configuration LILO was automatically installed without any questions or errors, and I can boot from HD to Linux or Windows98. If I want to boot to DOS 6.2, I make F8, after boot Windows98 and I choose "old DOS option". Everything seems to work fine, but I am shure that should be a simpler solution for that. There is on error in /hda5 because Linux can not mount it. I think that is a too small partition. Is there any suggestion to make this job simpler? Why Linux-Mandrake installation do not ask if we want to install LILO? It is not good see our MBR destroyed by a faulty LILO installation. If I am shure that DiskDrake can make a partion resise without destroying dos data, I would make the following partition: DOS c: (400MB) Linux /boot (10MB or a little more). Suggestions for the optimal size? Windows 98 D: (9GB) FAT16 E: (1.5GB) Linux /swap (128MB) Linux /root (remaining) I read a lot of installation instructions. None of them shown a map like this: the safest way to make the p+artitions to install linux. Why? Please make your suggestions, but specific suggestions, not general. As newbie is very difficult to me understand some details and make my own choices. [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages get email alerts with Yahoo! Re: [newbie]
Well, Windows is unprefferable for me just because it's so unstable and not so powerful. But I'd say Windows 2000 with it's file system makes me glad. It's very powerful, but still resourse-hungry that makes me not glad. And W2000 supports DOS badly... + there are not so much drivers and programs for W2000 and YET LESS drivers for Linux... The most of my hardware is not supported by Mandrake. May be FreeBSD should support it? - Original Message - From: Andrew Scotchmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2000 9:16 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] On Tue, 30 May 2000, you wrote: Since linux is about 10 times more powerful than microshaft how can you expect to un-pack the box and be an expertthere are literally hundreds of books out there and a ton of helpful people here, now all you have to do is become a learned user, read, learn, try, re-install ;) when you mess up and start over. Nice comments Jim and thats the only way to learn. I beleave that in the original message to this thread it was said to make linux as user friendly as it possibly can be. Though I would like some things to be made easier, most of which have been mentioned in the Discussion thread, I do feel that to make it too user friendly would rob Linux of it's unique position and it's marvels. Heck, if it becomes to user friendly with everything done without a thourght being required from the user, why don't we just all jack it in and reinstall Windoze What do you all think out there??? -- Andrew Blackburn England --In the pursuit of knowledge Everyday something is aquired-- (Lao Tzu - Tao Te Ching) ICQ 50762100
Re: [newbie] Removing a windows partition
I think that it is safer not to extend a partition. I think you'd better change your FAT into a linux (ext2) partition. This is easily done with fdisk (or cfdisk. This one is a bit more user-friendly). Once this is done, you can make an ext2 filesystem on it (with mke2fs) and mount it somewhere in your system. IE : If you need place for personnal files, you could mount it in your /home directory or something like that. If you don't know how to proceed to transfer your /home (or any other part of your linux filesystem) to your new partition, the Harddisk-upgrade-HOWTO (or mini-HOWTO. I can't remember) should give you some good hints. If you are still lost with it, scream for help on the list. (Or browse the list archive. This has already been answered) HTH Flupke Eric Mings wrote: I originally setup my disk with both linux and a windows partition. How can I do this without the possibility of damaging my linux system data? Thanks. Regards, Eric Mings Ph.D.
[newbie] LILO boot time
Hi again, I have got Linux installed on hda1 after ditching Windoze a couple of months ago now. When at the lilo prompt I have to wait 5 seconds for it to boot the kernal or press enter for instant booting. I know it is petty but how can I configure lilo to boot Linux instantly with out the prompt. I have looked into /etc/lilo.config and messed about with the timeout option but it has no effect. Therefore the waiting time command must be within another file but where? As I said it is a petty issue but it has become a bit of an obsession with me now. -- Andrew Blackburn England --In the pursuit of knowledge Everyday something is aquired-- (Lao Tzu - Tao Te Ching) ICQ 50762100

Re: [newbie] high security server and ftp and telnet
rharvey wrote: I setup a linux box with the server choice and high security. I finally found the place to turn on the web service. http web services are running now. The ftp seems to be installed. all the info I have found says its all set up but I can't ftp into the server. I need ftp to upload my web pages. I also want telnet. It does not work either. i can ping the server. I can go from the server to other computers thru telnet. First, make sure you have the telnet-server package installed. Then, enable the telnet and ftp servers in /etc/inetd.conf. I think you just should uncomment the lines corresponding to the servers. After you have done that, I think that it should be ok. But if you care about security, I think you'd better forget about telnet and install ssh instead. Is it the security level? maybe the servers are not enabled with the high-security level (this would not be surprizing. And even rather normal. telnet is NOT secure!!!) do i need to re-install and set the secutity level down? Even if you decide to change the security level, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REINSTALL LINUX! In fact, in theory, YOU NEVER HAVE TO REINSTALL LINUX Everybody should be aware of that. I see too often people saying "It didn't work so I reinstalled". Sorry, but that is NOT the solution. We are here in a unix environnement. Forget about the BAD BAD EVIL habits you had with Mikr0$oft. (sorry for the shouting, but I really want to focus everybody's attention about this point) The security levels are handled by the msec package. Read the files in /usr/doc/msecversion/ for details about security levels and how to change it. How do I get access to the services.. ( I do not have the gui auto loading. i can startx but i can't get any of the gui's to run..kde...gnome..ect...) To access a graphical login from a root command prompt, type "init 5". To automatically load the GUI login screen at startup, change the line id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault: in your /etc/inittab file. No window manager comes when you start X because (I think that) they are not installed in the server installation. Install them from the mdk CD. so I guess any info sent on how to fix this will have to be no-gui commands. Not anymore... :-) thanks in advance Robert HTH Flupke

Denis Would not how and from where Eric boots his Linux partition make a difference in the procedures he should use to delete his Windows partition and re-allocate his Linux patitions? Re: [newbie] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION - Way Better Documentation
I think there has to be better documentation on the file structure of Linux. I come from a Windows AND MacOS background and both of these systems are fairly intuitive in terms of how to save files to certain drives. Linux documentation isn't as intuitive. RayWinbush
