[newbie] Shell In Mandrake 7.1
Title: Shell In Mandrake 7.1 I recently installed Linux Mandrake 7.1. And am Extremely satisfied with it. Like it so much better than Winbloze. Although there is a steep learning curve. Which brings me to my question of which I am sure there will be plenty more. When I attempt to run a shell it will not run. I am using GSU which came with my distribution of Linux. I get the following message; KFM Warning Could not execute program /usr/x11r6/bin/gsu I understand that this is pointing me to the directory where it resides. [newbie] 4.01 and no xterm
I just installed 4.01 out of the cooker, and it's working well, after some minor problems with a corrupt rpm file. The only thing I noticed is that xterm won't come up, and neither will any terminal based applications. I am at a loss for explaining what has happened. When launching xterm, there are no error messages that pop up, just that the terminal won't open. I have tried opening from various places, such as the menu, and nothing. Re: [newbie] AMD 500 CPUs???
Hello Bill, I do have a mandrake with kernel 2.2.15 on an AMD 550. :) its working fine. Though in this kernel the k7 processors are not yet supported. I was told that they will be supported from kernel 2.3. onwards. But I don't have that version yet. That is why in the processor types at the compliation of the kernel i have chosen Pentium Pro. And it works fine with that. Could you please send me some confirmation to this letter because I think that they do not arrive at the mailing-list. My Kodak DC280 worked through the serial connection; haven't tried the usb since I recompiled my kernel. gphoto is still a little buggy and it has only limited support - you get much more use out of the Windows software. I have almost the identical setup. I have NT, DOS and WARP 4 installed and then installed Mandrake 7.1. All 4 work fine. I do not use system commander but Powerquest's Boot Magic to switch between them. I tried TurboLinux 6 before Mandrake and Mandrake is by far the easiest install. I suspect it has to do with where you ask the install to put your lilo. Do not put it in the MBR (which I think is the default). Put it in your / partition and I think that will work. Re: [newbie] NT4 domain joining
Assuming you have Samba running OK and you have set up smb.conf with the domain name, and also assuming that you're using Samba 2.0.6 then the first thing you need to do is to go to your domain controller and start server manager. Then select add to domain/windows nt4 worktsation and enter the netbios name of your linux machine. Now at your linux box enter: smbpasswd -j domain-name -r pdc-netbios-name -U admin-acct-on-NT Substitute your domain name, pdc name and admin account id as necessary. You will of course need to ensure that linux can reach the PDC somehow - try pinging its netbios name first. Personally I can't wait for samba to work as a fully functional PDC! Although, MDK7.1 is using Grub, you can still edit /etc/lilo.conf. If you would like to add your RAM settings: A) Log in as 'root', and open /etc/lilo.conf by right clicking on the file B) Select Text Editor. Navigate to the line: append=" Failsafe " C) Add the following, so that the line appears as: append="Failsafe mem=256M" Save the file and restart Linux. Now, due to some limitations in the present kernel, you may have to adjust the value to 254M. This limitation will be addressed in future kernels. Re: [newbie] Memory detection problem using GRUB
This seems to be a common problem; I have experienced it myself. I think it may be a problem with certain BIOSes not reporting memory correctly to the OS, but that's just a guess. Anyway, one way of fixing it with Grub which I use is to edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst In the file you will see something like: title linux kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz-secure root=dev/hda1 ide1=0xfff0,0xffe4 ide2=0xffa8,0xffe0 title linux-up kernel. title failsafe kernel So at the end of each line starting "kernel" add this: mem=256M You should find that Linux sees all your memory. I have just upgraded my system, to a dual-celleron on an Abit BP6, and have got the same problem. My prior system was an AMD K6-3, and it had no difficulties detecting the 256 Mb. I have tried to flash my BIOS - and wow - now I have my 256 Mb back again, at least I thought, because now it will not boot to windoze, so back again (my daughter can't accept beeing unable to play on the computer). I have tried to use the append="MEM=256", but it corrupts my system. So in my case there is a clear link between 'missing' RAM and BIOS. Mogens Jæger

I am helping a friend install Mandrake 7.0, everything goes fine until he gets to X configuration, he inputs all his video info, but when the install tests the configuration, instead of the screen asking "Can you read this" he gets a screen with a background and an X curser that he cannot control??? [newbie] 7.1 and voodoo2's
Hey there. 7.1 identifies my voodoo2's as being a voodoo banshee (voodoo3) card. Needless to say, it will not work even though the RPM claims to contain drivers for both voodoo2 and voodoo3 chipsets. Fine. I decided to uninstall the voodoo3 crap and install the voodoo2 drivers that work great in 7.02. I can't install the voodoo2 drivers because the voodoo3 drivers are installed and @#$%@$! 7.1 won't let me uninstall the voodoo3 drivers. It claims that it can't find the RPM that it tells me is causing the conflict with the voodoo2 drivers. I updated the RPM database to no avail. I used the file list in the RPM for the voodoo3 to manually delete all of its files, to no avail. I have searched my entire file system for files named 3dfx, voodoo2, voodoo3, V2, V3, Glide etc etc. Nothing is installed. I have rebooted three times. Why will this not work? I am totally completely raging pissed off at mandrake right now. Please help. Dacia __ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! Invites. http://invites.yahoo.com/

[newbie] MenuEditor NOT Installed???
Dear friends: Well, I am happy to report that I've finally got my LM 7.1 installed properly and maybe I can now actually get some work done. Except... Well, there is always an "except", but this one is pretty harmless, I think, and I'll bet many of you have had the same error message. I am talking about clickin on K, Panel, Edit Menus: "MenuEditor Not Installed!" What in the world does this mean? The menu file IS installed: [sher@adsl-77-232-254 sher]$ rpm -q menu menu-2.1.5-19mdk [sher@adsl-77-232-254 sher]$ So what exactly is this about? I tried to edit my menus, first as a user, then as root (by logging off and logging back into KDE as root. Same problem as root as well as user. By the way, under K, Applications, Editors, there is a listing for a program called "Gnome-Edit". Actually, this is a duplicate menu entry for Emacs. I wanted to delete it. So, anyone out there know what this is all about? Thanks so very much. Benjamin -- Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net

Does anyone out there use gFTP? If so, is there a way to customize the windows so that you can see the whole file name? I like to get the latest packages from cooker and it's easiest to just browse the site with the 'explorer' type window; my problem is that the window isn't wide enough to give me the whole file name, but it does give me useless info (to me anyway) like 'user', 'group' and 'attribs'. The stuff I'm really interested in would be 'filename', 'size' and 'date'. If there's no way to do this, could someone point me to a graphic ftp client that would? Thanks so much, Mike

[newbie] Re: Disappearng Interfaces (NIC's)
Thanks for responding, I ran the commands you suggested and will list the responses. But first, I should repeat that I am using Linux-Mandrake 7.1: #locate eepro100.o /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/eepro100.o /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/net/eepro100.o /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdksecure/net/eepro100.o #uname -r 2.2.15-4mdksecure #depmod -a # #reboot Now when it starts services during boot at the networking section: Bringing up interface eth0 Delaying eth0 initialization. [FAILED] Bringing up interface eth0 Delaying eth0 initialization. [FAILED] (at least the insmod/modules path stuff is gone) Which reminded me that before this problem happened, I used the Mandrake Updater, which automatically retrieves and installs updated packages/rpm's. I had read that Mandrake advises against using it for kernel updates, so I de-selected the kernel modules and ran the updater. Unfortunately, it seems that the updater installed those modules anyway. A look in /etc/lilo.conf shows the usual (for me) 2.2.15-4secure kernel, standard 2.2.15-4 kernel, and floppy. But, at the bottom is: # Add by install-kernel image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdk label=2.2.16-9mdk root=/dev/sda6 read-only optional # Add by install-kernel image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdksecure label=2.2.16-9mdksecure root=/dev/sda6 read-only optional The "install" is highlighted in yellow, so I am wondering if I need to run the "install-kernel" command or if the kernel has already been installed by the updater. Any suggestions? Is there a way to tell kpackage "where" to install a wordprocesser instead of accepting its default? I would like it to go into an empty partition so as to not overload a full one. -- Jeff Malka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
[newbie] Compiling a single kernel module
Okay. I needed to upgrade the driver (aic7xxx) for my SCSI card. I've downloaded the necessary source patches and applied them successfully. Now, I need to recompile. Someone suggested I "make modules" and "make modules_install". This seems like it would try to recompile all my modules. How do I compile just the module I need? Re: [newbie] Linux resources online
Apple has always used Motorola. But I never heard the final disposition of the copyright issue for the microprocessor chip itself. Last I heard some guy in a garage was going to be granted the basic patent for the microprocessor. What became of this? -Gary- In a message dated 7/23/2000 11:54:16 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Didn't Intel originally own the patent rights for some of the early chips that Apple and other companies were using? Re: [newbie] Linux resources online
I've heard many times over the years that Apple got the graphical interface idea from the Xerox PaloAltoResearchCenter people. A couple of years ago I saw (?The Pirates of Silicon Valley? -- don't recall) which portrayed the people at PARC adamently against showing this idea to Steve Jobs (of Apple). They were ordered by Xerox's Corporate Offices to show him their graphical developments. He took the idea and developed the LISA and the Macintosh. Bill Gates (of Microsoft, the young contender at this point in time) saw (the LISA?) at Apple, if I recall correctly, and began development of Windows. Copyright rulings were that the expression of an idea was what was copyrightable in these issues, and Apple lost the suit over Microsoft stealing the idea of the graphical environment, which they had stolen from Xerox PARC in the first place. PARC spawned several seminal ideas over the years. One is ETHERNET, the foundation ideas of interconnecting computers and how to do it, the protocols, etc. As I recall Xerox wouldn't support further development so these people (sorry I forgot the names) took ETHERNET with them when they left PARC, and continued to develop the protocols. Xerox blew things several times due to large (read industry dominant) company "corporate mentality". Xerox had no idea what to do with these ideas, but they made fortunes for other people and changed the face of computing. -Gary- In a message dated 7/23/2000 4:43:05 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << A nice little thing I once read in a book (don't recall the title, I read too much :) is that at one time Apple wanted to sue Microsoft for copying the idea of the mouse-driven graphical interface. Then, from Palo Alto, Kodak (!!) came up and threatened to sue Apple for the same thing if they were going on with that. Old film and paper documents showed that Kodak had been experimenting with mouses etc. already long before Apple got the idea. (Could be that I am completely wrong with Kodak as the company, but that is how I remember it.) Paul >>

Yeah, Juno bought WorldSpy, also a free ISP, recently also. -Gary- In a message dated 7/20/2000 11:25:41 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Help! The free ISP I use in Linux (FreeWWWeb) was just bought out by Juno! :::refraining from vulgarity::: >>

[newbie] SCCI misread how to change
Hello all, Upon upgrading to 7.1, I noticed that I have been having troubles with my SCCI zip, as far as read and writing. It seems to hang all the time with doing either. I went into DrakConf and it shows the wrong SCCI. It shows an Adaptec AIC 7871. I have a 2940. Prior to upgrading, I had no problems, and it was correct. Question is, how do I go about changing this. If I open up HardDrak inside of DrakConf, it does nothing when I highlight it SCCI. Nothing is able to be changed. It just shows the devices, etc. Nothing else can be done. Is there an easy way to reconfigure my SCCI without having to go through upgrade again? Thanks for your help. Regards, Gary

[newbie] Netscape send error message
I have a problem with netscape sending mail in my user mode. It gives me a message that "Netscape can't make temp folder" and won't send the e-mail. I can send without a problem as root. Scary but I tried it. Any ideas as to what happened? I know, it's not a linux problem, but it is sorta if I can't communicate through my linux box. I'm having to use the windows computer to send this. Help is appreciated, Dennis
