[newbie-it] aggiornamnto da 9.0 a 9.1

2003-03-28 Thread Simone Cortesi
Ciao,

approccio all'aggiornamento usando le ISO.

[newbie-it] Installazione KDE 3.1

2003-03-28 Thread Gaetano

comprende l'installazione generale? (mi sa di no!)

grazie tante in anticipo!

allora:

works 100% perfect but
I tried John's advice but like I thought, the terminal looked at me and
shrieked with laughter. I got very, very annoyed and proceeded to do the
following:

In /mnt I created two new directories - DVD and CD-RW. Then I chose these as
mounting points for my drives respectively. Once I realised both were
recognised and working I removed cdrom and cdrom2 from /mnt. as far as I
know, everything is working now. I have a mounting point for each drive
which has a name which implies what the directory is for. If every thing
goes according to plan Why the hell didn't I think about it before?

It won't backfire on me or anything, will it?

/mnt/cdrom2 around in /etc/fstab entries and then they come out the
proper way round, ie, cdrom= DVD, cdrom2=writer.

John

try,
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom auto
user,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom2 auto
user,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0in
/etc/fstab

I cannot remember if you have both devices scsi-emulated but this way
round makes dvd = scd0 = cdrom, writer = scd1 = cdrom2, always provided
that you have dvd/writer master and slave in that order, because the
master slave determins scd0 or scd1 , and your fstab entry determins
which is cdrom, and cdrom2.

John

As they say look in bios, but it's simple really, if you do it the same
as mine and all is ok then your've got dvd/writer , master/slave, if it
comes out , dvd=scd1=cdrom2, writer=scd0=cdrom, then you're
master/slave is the opposite way round.

As far as naming the /mnt directories goes it matters not what you call

I have the same problem with Mdk 9.0. My impression is that the
supermount causes this. Previous Mdk versions (whithout supermount) did
not have this problem. You can disable the supermount through the MCC

[newbie] upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1

2003-03-28 Thread Simone Cortesi
Hi,

this is my first try to upgrade mandrake from a previous installation,
at the moment i'm running 9.0, I already have the 3 ISOs of 9.1.

My filesystem is as follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] simone]$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 37233384 8610688 26731308 25% /
/dev/hdc1 39076544 22893632 16182912 59% /mnt/win_c

This morning I did try to upgrade this installation, during setup I did
not find any reference to the fact that mandrake was upgrading the
system instead of installing it new. It just seemed like a normal
installation to a formatted hard disk. fearing the unknown I did abort
the installation before writing anything to disk, so now I'm safely on
my old 9.0.

Which is the exact way to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1? where do I read more
about upgrading? is there any way I can know that mandrake is actually
upgrading my system instead of installing it clean.

Thanks,
Simone.

[newbie] On USB Ports

2003-03-28 Thread Teilhard Knight
Thanks to HarM and Derek. I must confess I didn't try Dereck's advise, so, I
do not know whether it might have worked or not. I'm sorry about this, it is
just that my system got highly unstable due to my election of loading an NFS
server on boot. The problem was that for some obscure reason, the system
hanged when booting off, and the only thing left to do was to shut the power
off. That caused a lot of problems and when I found the cure, and also I
consulted the experts on the USB isssue and nothing worked, the system was in
a very bad shape, so I decided to clean everything and do a fresh install.
That gave me the opportunity to give some more space to the Linux patition
which was already a bit tight. Anyway, thanks.

I know where to find the drivers for Debian, there must exist for Mandrake,
so it should be not much of a problem to make it work. But I am now mainly
concerned with the USB modem. Now, if I go to the control centre, I can see
the modem under USB devices. But, in the USB viewer, it appears as unknown

again.

Before 9.1 final, I made a third install of RC2 and everything worked
nicely but the keventd thing. I found some reports on this and it has
something to do with APM: kapm-idled kept calling keventd like a zillion
times per nanosecond which put this processor at an nice 'n' easy 5000%
load (gkrellm and top showed only a 100% load)

I am anxiously waiting for servers to be less busy than they are to
download 9.1 final and start recompiling the kernel if the keventd
problem is still there.

BTW, I just got my 9.1, and attempted to install it on my Atari 800, but
the installation was a complete failure. Tomorrow I'm going to try my

Don't waste your time. I tried it and it always failed during second CD.

Is the NTFS partition setup as a BASIC DISK or a DYNAMIC DISK? If it's
setup as a DYNAMIC DISK, then you won't be able to resize it with either
Partition Magic or Mandrake as the partitioning scheme is proprietary to
Microsoft and partition resizing programs are unable to properly adjust
the partition table.

That's one scenario I've had to deal with in the past and the eventual
outcome isn't nice or pretty...but overall, I've had to wipe out the
initial Windows installation - reinstall Windows in a smaller partition
and NOT use NTFS or Dynamic Disk, then do the linux (or Mandrake)
installation.

Hi community

Can anyone tell me where I can find a program which creates audio cd's. I am
talking about the Nero type program which takes MP3's, converts them to cd
tracks and burns them to the cd. Maybe I already have it but do not know
about it. ;o()

Not to squash the monkey here, but I've found that it's more beneficial
to rip the tracks to high-quality MP3 prior to creating/converting and
audio CD - but then again, I'm anal retentive and very very picky. I
can't have Mozart popping and squawking - very annoying...

However, KonCD, K3B, eRoaster and the likes do the same thing as aHead
Nero - just a matter of getting to know the applications and how they
work - the front end is slightly different than Nero, but once you're
familiar with 'em, you'll find they're actually a bit more powerful.
Just don't set the normalise options - really sucks through and
through - very harmful to Dave Brubeck.

Which is the exact way to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1? where do I read more

During the install, I think it is after you have set up your mouse a screen

BE VERY CAREFUL HERE.

In the default normal mode the 9.1 installation is nearly totally
automatic.
If it finds existing readable linux partitions it will ask if this is
upgrade/new install, if not it will assume new install and proceed
accordingly.

recently upgraded my system to a AsusN266-vm board with 512 DDR and a 1.73
AMD chip. I have been waiting to see how 9.1 was going to be able to handle
all the intergraded components. I knew I would have to apply a drivers for
the Gforce 2 video, and the drivers for the Nforce chipset, but I was
somewhat concerened that the Nvidia drivers for 9.0 would not work and I
would have to wait for a few weeks while Nvidia caught up to Mandraksoft. I
found that rebuilding the src.rpms drivers worked fine after a few config
hacks. The athlon.rpms made me wonder about the 586 and 686 issue.

Thanks again.

Because all (well, most all**) of Mandrake is compiled using i586
optimizations. It's a widely held belief that compiling for i686
actually degrades performance, and compiling for athlon (3 FPU's per
cycle, instead of Intel's 2), still provides little to no benefit.
That's also been my experience in many (futile) tries ;)

** the exception is glibc libraries, which are compiled for i686,
and used if a i686 processor is reported. Type 'arch' in a terminal
and it'll return what your cpu purports to be. I used the word
purports, because some early K6 AMD's and very early Pentiums, some
mobile (laptop) cpu's, and all current VIA-C3 cpu's report they're
 i686, but they're not.

Pushing cpu otimizations to the max is not always a good idea. On
some hardware combinations of PSU, motherboard, cache and ram, and
other components, it can cause failures. Most often why you see some
complaints that Red Hat (i386) works, but Mandrake (i586) doesn't.

Just put what you need in there and they will be activated when the network

You can still use the Mandrake tools even though you are using command line.
Just type drakconnect and you can configure Dhcp and hostname. (Although I

Btw, multipart-signed is standartized for over 10 years or so,

Sorry if this post is too long, but I thought it would help to be as

Can anybody help?!

[newbie] Can't get ADSL with PPPoE to run on 9.1

2003-03-28 Thread Anders Lind
Hello friends,

it seems impossible for me to get my ADSL-connection up and running
with Mandrake 9.1 (I haven't tried earlier versions of Mandrake though)
but Redhat 8.0 works like a charm, there is a little program called Neat
there but I cannot find it either on rpmfind.net or on Redhat
installationdisks
so my guess is that hides itself somewhere, I will ask on a Redhat list if
somebody
there might know. In the meantime is there something anyone can think of.

Cheers
Anders

1.) drakconf would automatically set up

to search for what might be there, and
it does not correctly set up the nfs.

I think it should also have a mini text console
and log the text in a file so that one can
learn along with it, or for very new newbies,
it can have a tutorial that you click-and-follow
 along with.

Just some ideas for the Mandrake Team.

 Sorry for the OT.

I sympathise with your frustration, but believe me setting up NFS is a *lot*
easier now than it used to be.

From the client side all you have to do is run the NFS GUI, search for
advertised exports and pick a mount point. Selecting 'Expert' is useful so
you can make the share user mountable, and to make it 'noauto'
If NFS shares are auto mounted you can get problems with the computer
'hanging' for 5 minutes when it powers off if the server is switched off
before the client.

From the server side all you need to do is make sure the following services
are running :-
nfs
netfs
nfslock
portmap

Create an /etc/exports file. Mine looks like this :-
/home 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.128(rw)
/usr/src/RPM 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.128(rw)

(I believe the use of root_no_squelch is deprecated, but I cannot remember
why)

Make sure there is no 'whitespace' after the subnet mask or else it will not
work.

Then enter' exportfs -ra' and that should be all you have to do. (hopefully)

BTW: NFS is notoriously insecure, and should not be used over unprotected Lan
segments. For a secure method of passing files between Linux computers that
happen to be using KDE, give kio_fish a try. It is installed by default with
Mandrake 9.1 http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/kio_fish.html

Re: [newbie] Need to format new HD?

2003-03-28 Thread DissectingTable
Yes you need to format it. With a new floppy, preformatting is almost
universal, but with a hard drive it's not possible to know in advance what
operating system will be on it. And not only do you have to format it, you have
to partition it too. If you're a total newbie, let the installer auto-partition
for you; I recommend reading one of the HOWTOs on disk partitioning, though.

Basically you can get by with

(1) a swap partition about twice the size of your machine's RAM

(2) a linux partition with a mount point of /

When you know more you can fine-tune the allocations, but this will get you goin.

Cheers!

Todd,

You could format it before starting the install, but there is no point
-- during the Mandrake install you will have the opportunity /
requirement to divide it into partitions and then format those.
Easiest to do it during the install.

Fw: [newbie] 9.1 does not work

2003-03-28 Thread eric huff
I think this was meant to go to the list. (name removed in case it wasn't)

However, 9.1 purports to resize NTFS Partitions (via diskdrake and
during install) just fine, and many have reported it doing this task
flawlessly. So, perhaps something is corrupt on your NTFS partition, or
one would assume that the installer could resize it.

I did forget to mention that i was reading from the 9.0 manual.

Luckily for me (at least on my first computer) i'm just gonna blast wind*ze
away.
Then, if all goes well, i'll have to decide what to do with my newer
computer (with XP loaded).

PS, don't blame Mandrake, blame MS for their closed filesystem
implementations. Crap MS bloatware problems again...

That's one scenario I've had to deal with in the past and the eventual
outcome isn't nice or pretty...but overall, I've had to wipe out the
initial Windows installation - reinstall Windows in a smaller partition
and NOT use NTFS or Dynamic Disk, then do the linux (or Mandrake)
installation.

like it and of all the distros I've installed, I think it's the friendliest.
I know that doesn't carry much weight in this community and I don't mean it
in the sense of just click and you don't have to read any books or even
watch the pretty lights, kid; I mean Mandrake makes me want to get more
involved, while others like Debian seem to have a deliberately high barrier

Well, if Mandrake can't resize it, try Partition Magic. If Partition

[newbie] funny problem with FAT32 parition

2003-03-28 Thread Srinivas V.
hello

i just installed mandrake linux 9.1 and was configuring some stuff. i
normally mount a FAT32 parition under linux to share files between windows
and linux. to do this i have been adding an entry in my /etc/fstab to set up
the partition. i've used this with various distros in the past like redhat,
mandrake 9.0 etc.

i tried setting up the same thing in 9.1 too, but encountered a funny
problem. i added a line to fstab as usual. the line is:

/dev/hda4 /d vfat auto 0 0

this has worked in the past. with 9.1 too, it works, but with some a wierd
limitation.

i am able to mount the partition as root. when i try to access files (e.g.
when i do ls) as another user, i keep getting the error message pemission
denied for all many normal files. even in directories, i am not able to
view their contents.

any suggestions ?

   thanx

Covert the partition to ReiserFS or ext3 or XFS! (joking joking joking)

Meanwhile, when you're mounting via the /etc/fstab, due to the perms on
VFAT drives, you're not going to be able to view/mount/whatever - as a
regular user. Now, on the other hand, if you mount the partition as
nobody you should be able to access the drive as any user on the
system. Or, you can run a script to mount it as your username and bypass
heaps of probs...or even use the Mandrake Control Centre to do the mount
for you mate...

[newbie] Install of 9.1 has broken KDE

2003-03-28 Thread Richard Jones
I've installed 9.1 from the ISOs that I downloaded and burnt to CD. The
install went flawlessly, but once I rebooted I found that no KDE
application would work. I've had to startx xdm manually to even get
X11 to start up. Any KDE app I try to run once X11 is going just quits
out as soon as it tries to open a window. Other apps (eg. Evolution,
Mozilla, various terminals, the Mandrake RPM tools, ...) work fine - it
appears to just be the KDE apps. For example, I run konsole, and get the
following terminal output. Note, I nuked my ~/.kde dir, and ran konsole
twice. The first has a whole bunch of KDE environment initialisation
(and then dies). The second just has this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] richard]$ konsole
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension RENDER missing on display :0.0.

I get a flash of some window, and then the app quits. I used strace to
try to figure what might be going on, but it just dies with a SIGSEGV
after doing some ioctl calls, then calls the KDE crash handler (which
doesn't actually work, like all the other KDE stuff).

Does anyone have a clue as to what might be going wrong???

You might want to check and modify your /etc/ld.so.conf to include some
of the lib dirs found in your /usr/lib - including /usr/lib and
/usr/local/lib as well - and make sure you run ldconfig to rebuild the
cache - also - you can put KDEDIR='/usr' in your /etc/profile along with
(towards the end of it) export KDEDIR so that KDE knows where it
lives...

Those little fixes should get KDE to play properly - but remember to
delete the .kde dirs from your ~/home/usernamegoeshere directory before
firing up KDE again...

(You might want to install Civilme's Xtart rpm on disk three - so that
you can very easily start any WM you want from a console without heaps
bullshit)
