[newbie-it] aggiornamnto da 9.0 a 9.1
Grazie, Simone. -- Simone Cortesi http://cortesi.com/ blog * photos * PHP manual in italian Did I help you? [newbie-it] Installazione KDE 3.1
(mi sa di no!) (sarà la mia prima installazione che farò ma con la documentazione che ho penso di riuscirci, magari vi faccio sapere) grazie tante in anticipo!

Oh, that happens, don't know why, I change the /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom2 around in /etc/fstab entries and then they come out the proper way round, ie, cdrom= DVD, cdrom2=writer. John As they say look in bios, but it's simple really, if you do it the same as mine and all is ok then your've got dvd/writer , master/slave, if it comes out , dvd=scd1=cdrom2, writer=scd0=cdrom, then you're master/slave is the opposite way round. I have the same problem with Mdk 9.0. My impression is that the supermount causes this. Previous Mdk versions (whithout supermount) did not have this problem. You can disable the supermount through the MCC though. [newbie] looking for a tv card for Linux
Hello I am looking for a good TV Card to use with Mandrake 9.0. I plan to upgrade to 9.1 next month. I have searched a few web sites and so far have found a Hauppauge WinTV PVR-350 but it is a bit pricey for my budget. Are there other recommendations for one that will work with Linux? I do not need too many bells and whistles but would like to watch TV and listen to FM radio on my computer as well as be able to record from my camcorder on CD or DVD eventually when I get a DVD burner. [newbie] upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1
Hi, this is my first try to upgrade mandrake from a previous installation, at the moment i'm running 9.0, I already have the 3 ISOs of 9.1. It just seemed like a normal installation to a formatted hard disk. fearing the unknown I did abort the installation before writing anything to disk, so now I'm safely on my old 9.0. [newbie] On USB Ports
Thanks to HarM and Derek. I must confess I didn't try Dereck's advise, so, I do not know whether it might have worked or not. I'm sorry about this, it is just that my system got highly unstable due to my election of loading an NFS server on boot. The problem was that for some obscure reason, the system hanged when booting off, and the only thing left to do was to shut the power off. That caused a lot of problems and when I found the cure, and also I consulted the experts on the USB isssue and nothing worked, the system was in a very bad shape, so I decided to clean everything and do a fresh install. That gave me the opportunity to give some more space to the Linux patition which was already a bit tight. Anyway, thanks. Teilhard Knight The Extraterrestrial Who ate my sandwich? [newbie] How do I disconnect an ASDL connection?
I configured my ASDL connection to start on boot and it works great. In Windows it sometimes goes down, but here it is hidden, I never see an icon indicating the state of the connection or anything, but it is always on. Thing is, I installed Mandrake in a small hp Pavillion computer wich comes with a Win Modem. Someone told me that Linux doesen't support Win Modems, so I went and got me an external USB modem. I know now that several Win modems are supported by Linux, but mine sems not to have been detected by Mandrake, I know where to find the drivers for Debian, there must exist for Mandrake, so it should be not much of a problem to make it work. But I am now mainly concerned with the USB modem. Now, if I go to the control centre, I can see the modem under USB devices. But, in the USB viewer, it appears as unknown device. I can't have Mozart popping and squawking - very annoying... However, KonCD, K3B, eRoaster and the likes do the same thing as aHead Nero - just a matter of getting to know the applications and how they work - the front end is slightly different than Nero, but once you're familiar with 'em, you'll find they're actually a bit more powerful. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Thanks, as I reposted I was just a little courius about the topic. I had recently upgraded my system to a AsusN266-vm board with 512 DDR and a 1.73 AMD chip. I have been waiting to see how 9.1 was going to be able to handle all the intergraded components. I knew I would have to apply a drivers for the Gforce 2 video, and the drivers for the Nforce chipset, but I was somewhat concerened that the Nvidia drivers for 9.0 would not work and I would have to wait for a few weeks while Nvidia caught up to Mandraksoft. I found that rebuilding the src.rpms drivers worked fine after a few config hacks. The athlon.rpms made me wonder about the 586 and 686 issue. Thanks again. I think it should also have a mini text console and log the text in a file so that one can learn along with it, or for very new newbies, it can have a tutorial that you click-and-follow along with. Just some ideas for the Mandrake Team. Sorry for the OT. I sympathise with your frustration, but believe me setting up NFS is a *lot* easier now than it used to be. From the client side all you have to do is run the NFS GUI, search for advertised exports and pick a mount point. Selecting 'Expert' is useful so you can make the share user mountable, and to make it 'noauto' If NFS shares are auto mounted you can get problems with the computer 'hanging' for 5 minutes when it powers off if the server is switched off before the client. From the server side all you need to do is make sure the following services are running :- nfs netfs nfslock portmap Create an /etc/exports file. Mine looks like this :- /home 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.128(rw) /usr/src/RPM 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.128(rw) (I believe the use of root_no_squelch is deprecated, but I cannot remember why) Make sure there is no 'whitespace' after the subnet mask or else it will not work. Then enter' exportfs -ra' and that should be all you have to do. (hopefully) BTW: NFS is notoriously insecure, and should not be used over unprotected Lan segments. Re: [newbie] Need to format new HD?
Yes you need to format it. With a new floppy, preformatting is almost universal, but with a hard drive it's not possible to know in advance what operating system will be on it. And not only do you have to format it, you have to partition it too. If you're a total newbie, let the installer auto-partition for you; I recommend reading one of the HOWTOs on disk partitioning, though. Basically you can get by with (1) a swap partition about twice the size of your machine's RAM (2) a linux partition with a mount point of / When you know more you can fine-tune the allocations, but this will get you goin. Man i hate outlook. Why doesn't reply all reply to all?!? Anyway, on page 1 of chapter 1 of the startup guide, there is a warning about this (if you have 2000, NT or XP): NTFS Partitions. Windows 2000 , NT or XP users should be very careful not to resize NTFS partitions with GNU/Linux . This will damage your data. In this case, use an appropriate disk-resizing application such as Partition Magic. I downloaded 3 cds of Mandrake 9.1 yesterday, but when I try to install it this morning I find it can not resize my hard drive, which is a fujitsu MHR2030AT all in NTFS with a size of 27.9 GB. I apologise for all of the nfs noise on the list, I did not wish to waste bandwidth, not sure what I did wrong, I think I got it to work, by re-loading the netfs daemon on the server, must have been something to do with the newer version with 9.1 on the workstation and the older ver. on the server which is mdk 8.2 Nfs is so hard, I am sorry. Fw: [newbie] 9.1 does not work
I think this was meant to go to the list. (name removed in case it wasn't) However, 9.1 purports to resize NTFS Partitions (via diskdrake and during install) just fine, and many have reported it doing this task flawlessly. So, perhaps something is corrupt on your NTFS partition, or one would assume that the installer could resize it. I did forget to mention that i was reading from the 9.0 manual. Luckily for me (at least on my first computer) i'm just gonna blast wind*ze away. Then, if all goes well, i'll have to decide what to do with my newer computer (with XP loaded). PS, don't blame Mandrake, blame MS for their closed filesystem implementations. Crap MS bloatware problems again... eric huff wrote: Man i hate outlook. Why doesn't reply all reply to all?!? [newbie] funny problem with FAT32 parition
hello i just installed mandrake linux 9.1 and was configuring some stuff. i normally mount a FAT32 parition under linux to share files between windows and linux. to do this i have been adding an entry in my /etc/fstab to set up the partition. i've used this with various distros in the past like redhat, mandrake 9.0 etc. i tried setting up the same thing in 9.1 too, but encountered a funny problem. i added a line to fstab as usual. the line is: /dev/hda4 /d vfat auto 0 0 this has worked in the past. with 9.1 too, it works, but with some a wierd limitation. i am able to mount the partition as root. when i try to access files (e.g. when i do ls) as another user, i keep getting the error message pemission denied for all many normal files. even in directories, i am not able to view their contents. any suggestions ? thanx srinivas _ Vrrm Fasten your seatbelts. http://server1.msn.co.in/msnSpecials/formula2003/index.asp Get set for F1 2003 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Install of 9.1 has broken KDE
I've installed 9.1 from the ISOs that I downloaded and burnt to CD. The install went flawlessly, but once I rebooted I found that no KDE application would work. I've had to startx xdm manually to even get X11 to start up. Any KDE app I try to run once X11 is going just quits out as soon as it tries to open a window. Other apps (eg. Evolution, Mozilla, various terminals, the Mandrake RPM tools, ...) work fine - it appears to just be the KDE apps. For example, I run konsole, and get the following terminal output. Note, I nuked my ~/.kde dir, and ran konsole twice. The first has a whole bunch of KDE environment initialisation (and then dies). The second just has this: [EMAIL PROTECTED] richard]$ konsole Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0. Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0. Xlib: extension RENDER missing on display :0.0. I get a flash of some window, and then the app quits. I used strace to try to figure what might be going on, but it just dies with a SIGSEGV after doing some ioctl calls, then calls the KDE crash handler (which doesn't actually work, like all the other KDE stuff).
