[newbie] OpenOffice.org reacquires ownership on file format
I have downloaded StarOffice7 from SUN website, which by the way is free for education (read the license). SO is way faster than OOo which was beginning to lag on my machine. SO is cute and it comes with a 500+ pages manual very well done. I use SO at school to teach my computer courses. THANKS SUN! My question now : I had to keep both openoffice.org (installed by urpmi) and SO (installed with the custom SUN installer). But OOo is reacquiring the file format. I mean that somehow when clicking on a SO file it opens (with no reason) in OOo. I have then to set up again the prefered application to open these files in konqueror. I added SO in the Mandrake menu for the system. And it still continues. Any ideas? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Ogg is a free (GPL'd) audio compression format that does not require royalty payments to anyone. Many people think it sounds better than mp3, particularly at the lower bitrates and it has the added bonus of creating smaller file sizes. One drawback is that it is not supported by many hardware players right now, but more support is coming. iriver supports it with a firmware upgrade for it's players and there are a few others. Also, most of the non-MS software players support it now, like winamp, and of course all the linux based software players support it. -- /g Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Nvidia release linux only app???
Have you guys seen this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/04/19/nvidia_quadro_4000/ Nvidia is offering both Windows and Linux drivers for the part. However, the company's 3D final-film rendering software, Gelato, also introduced today, >> only runs on the open source OS< - largely because it can make use of a 64-bit processor. It also supports PCI Express and multi-threading, Nvidia said. The $2750 application can be linked to existing film production systems, including Maya and Python. It provides accelerated scanline and ray-traced rendering, global illumination, ambient occlusion, and support for the full range of geometric primitives (NURBS, bicubic and bilinear patches, polygon meshes, subdivision surfaces, points, curves and procedural geometry) for true film-quality images. ® This might go a long way to really really establising linux as "THE" high end video processing platform of choice... Thats got to be a good thing.. (I realise that Linux already has a pretty good standing in the high end video market, but this has got to help.) -- rgds Frank Hauptle (aka Franki) For free scripts, online webmaster tools, HTML, XHTML, Perl & PHP tutorials and stuff, visit: http://htmlfixit.com Free web developer resources. By the way is Koffice lighter then openoffice? Any user on this list? Given that OO was opening files OK before, I'd recommend fixing the problem rather than changing your word procesor. But anyway, FYI ... Abiword is very light, and somewhat minimalistic. It's aquired some features since I stopped using it a while back, but it's still more of a choice for someone running an old, slow system who doesn't need to do anything fancy with their word-processor (BTW, it is just a word processor, not a whole office suite like OO or KOffice). Koffice is a bit faster than OO (assuming you're running KDE - I don't know how it performs in other environments). The look and feel of KWord is more like a DTP program than a word processor - it's very good if you want to do a lot with frames (which I don't). Unlike most other programs, it has some limited ability to edit PDF files, but the only times I've tried to open PDF files in KWord, it screwed up the formatting completely. A major disadvantage for those of us who have to share documents with Windows users is its inability to save in Word format (though it can open Word documents). Personally I think it falls between two stools (if I want to do fancy FTP stuff, I'll use Scribus) but some people like it. Of course if you are producing documents solely for your own use (or for people who only want to print, not edit, the files you send them, or who are also Linux/Unix users) the best program is still, IMHO, LyX. They are always having problems in our area and are one of those stupid ISP's that try to solve their own M$ problems by shutting down their smtp access. LX That's why I picked speakeasy.net they love linux I am currently also using speakeasy.net. unfortunately, the only thing available in my area as far as DSL is concerned is IDSL which is limited to 144K and costs a fortune (~$100 a month). Now Comcast Internet is also available but I am hesitant to switch. While they are cheaper, it is still $62 a month for a home network (which I don't need, but this is all they currently seem to offer) and I am afraid they will start blocking certain ports one day. The nice thing about Speakeasy is that the license allows you to run servers on your connection while Comcast's does not. I am running my own mail server and I am afraid that Comcast will block it one day, leaving me without email. Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Should I build the NVIDIA module myself?
Avi, If you download the NVIDIA run file (www.nvidia.com) this will build the module for you if you have the kernel source installed. You also have some extra command line options this way, and one of them is to uninstall the module. Tony. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Avi Schwartz Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2004 4:23 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Should I build the NVIDIA module myself? Hi, While Mandrake is releasing all these new kernels in order to fix security issues I noticed that they are in no hurry to release the matching NVIDIA modules. This leaves me in a bind. Either I wait until Mandrake releases the NVIDIA modules (who knows when) and continue running the current kernel version (which I assume is not a good idea from security perspective) or I install the new version of the kernel and download the NVIDIA code and build it for the new kernel. What is the opinion of this group? If I do decide to build the module myself, should I remove the current NVIDIA_kernel-xx package first? I assume I don't since the module is installed in the proper kernel module tree. What about NVIDIA_GLX? BTW, it would be nice if Mandrake would release the NVIDIA modules together with the new kernels, don't you think? They probably have now some users swearing at Mandrake because their X environment stopped working after updating the kernel... [newbie] Auto-resize of cascaded windows in KDE
I know there is a way to cascade windows in KDE, but is there a way to have them automatically resized on this event? This is the default setting in Windows, and while it can be a pain, it is usually the best method. There's nothing worse then having five different windows with five different sizes and losing one during a cascade... BTW, I'm running MDK 10 so it is whatever default KDE version... Thanks! [newbie] KPPP: Kernel PPP support
Since I`ve updated from 8.2 to 10.0 Official, I cannot connect to the internet anymore. When I try to connect using KPPP, the modem dials but then I get the following error message: pppd daemon died unexpectedly! Exit status 4 (On man pppd, the explanation is: 4: The kernel does not support PPP, for example, the PPP kernel driver is not included or cannot be loaded.). Details: unable to open the /dev/ppp device. You need to create the /dev/ppp device by executing the following command as root: ^lmknod /dev/ppp c 1808 0 When I do this, I get the message: substitution failed, so I don`t have ppp in the /dev folder. I`d be grateful for help. Thanks, Kat Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

Re: [newbie] How to get IceWM 1.2.13 shown in XDM, GDM, KDM login screen ???
How do I get IceWM 1.2.13 listed in the available choices of Window Managers when I log on as a User? What and where is the configuration file I need to edit? It looks like Mandrake 9.1 only uses XDM for the graphical login. Is this correct? If so, anyone know which files XDM is using to provide the graphical login with the choices of Window Manager to use in that drop down box? I was able to run IceWM 1.2.13 by turning off the graphical login (booting directly to a text login), starting X Windows with xinit, going into the xterm box and typing icewm-sessions. Then I select another workspace to work in. But I'd really like to have this version of IceWM available as a choice in the drop down box on the graphical login screen. Ideas? TIA, The Other. Re: [newbie] For Opera lovers...
Anyone know how to change those tiny fonts in the body of the email messages? Thanks, Dan Hello Dan, for Opera 7.23 On the main menu bar: File-> Preferences (or Alt-P)-> Fonts (on the left side dialog box) This brings up the right side dialog box. Select the font use topic you wish to change (start with Normal, it may be the one you need) and highlight the font name. Double-click on the font name or click on the Choose button. This brings up another dialog box that lets you change the font, size, and other parameters. For my astigmatism, I like the Helvetica (Adobe) at 14. normal. in black. Regards, The Other. What is the simplest way to mange this, if it's possible... -- Jonathan Dlouhy Wednesday, April 28, 2004 03:03 AM It's wonderful to be here in the great state of Chicago. --Vice President Dan Quayle Registered Linux user #264482 Powered by Mandrake 10.0 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Installing a second network card via command line
Hi guys, just got a version of mandrake and was trying to get it to see my second network card. I have one of those VIA EPIA CL 1 Mini-ITX motherboards (they're awesome) and it has two via-rhine III network cards. Mandrake has picked up the first card using driver/module via-rhine but it failed to see the second network card (eth1) and it doesn't even have a module for it. I went into the modules.conf config file and added an alias for eth1 right below eth0, i.e.: Alias eth1 via-rhine But this did nothing. Does anyone have any tips for me to get this installed - unfortunately, I'm not running X or I'm sure it would be much easier. Thanks for any help you can provide.
