RE: [newbie] Dad hates MS!! Now what?

2002-05-06 Thread Hanan Shargi

Well Tommy,

If he's dangereous (as you said) I guess he's exactly the right person to try
Linux, beside with distributions like Mandrake you dont need to be an expert
to play around with Linux, and even betrer you dont have to suggest any
applications, Mandrake is full of em, you just tell him which is for what ( If
he couldnt guess from the names :)

Dangereous guy + Mandrake + newbie@linux-mandrake URL + enough time = A
linuxian in the making

and maybe YOU will learn from him later on ;)

Hi all,

I was chatting with my dad the other night about his adventures with Windows
XP. He starts out with Man, I hate Microsoft!

:-D

Ok, so now what? I mentioned Mandrake to him and he seems interested...
However, I don't know where to point him. What applications should I
suggest? And for support, should I just point him to this list? He knows
just enough to be dangerous (would Interactive Bastille help with that? -
you know, something to protect yourself from yourself)... Unfortunately he
doesn't live local so I couldn't set it up for him (unless somehow over the
net?). I'm very much a newbie to this operating system, and Linux and
general. But if you have any ideas how to help the process of a 50 year old
Dad interested in a Microsoft alternative, please let me know. Thanks!

[newbie] RE: setting a 10/100 NIC 's speed

2002-05-06 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi All,

I have posted last week asking if there is a way I can set the 10/100 NIC's
speed to 10, and some one suggested that it is easer to set the hub's speed
instead.
I tried netconf, harddrake, Mandrake control center, I couldnt find anyplace
hat lets you set the NIC's speed ?!

I checked the hub and its auto detecting, ther's no way I can set its speed.
Does anybody else have other suggestion ?

Just in case I'm looking at the wrong direction, I'm trying to lower the
card's speed coz my ISP guy told me that the reason my linux box is getting
disconnected from the DSL every now and then is becoz, my NIC is trying to
connect at 100 speed while the internal networking in the wall ( which conects
me to their DSL ) can only handle 10 ! I'm kind of getting specticle here, but
my W2K box ( whcih have a seperate IP ) is not getting disconnected after I
set the speed of the NIC to 10 -

ANy suggestions Appreciated.

Re: [newbie] LAN with 2 IP's from DSL povider ?

2002-05-02 Thread Hanan Shargi

Thank you Brian,

but the point is I already had this connection sharing, and I was able to set
it up with the help of some list members ( infact you were the one who helped
me out alot back then :) )

but the problem is that while having this sharing, and Linux was used as a
firewall, and Bastille was running...etc. I had performance problems, my
connection used to go down a lot, and when I contacted the ISP their
technician came in and said that the reason why I was getting disconnected is
becoz the NIC was trying to connect with a 100 speed while the line can only
handle 10, thats why i was getting disconnected too often. He said he didnt
know how to force the card to connect with 10 under linux, so he offered me a
new IP ( without paying for it though :)

I posted another question on the list asking if I can force the card to
connect with 10 speed,

Isnt there a way to concet both PCs while them having the 2 IP's ? I really
liked the idea coz back then my w2k machine had to get off the net whenever I
needed to take my notebook ( the linux machine ) with me to school ( which
used to piss off my 4 years old son as he couldnt surf pbskids.org while I
wasnt at home :) )

I just need them to be on the same LAN so that i can share the printer and
browse both hard drives using samba.

[newbie] LAN with 2 IP's from DSL povider ?

2002-05-01 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi,

picture this setting :

linux box with 10.x.x.x IP ( IP prvided by the DSL provider )

HUB

W2K box with 10.x.x.y IP ( another IP prvided by the DSL provider )

the two boxes connects to a HUB and the UP-link on the HUB connects to the DSL
coming from the phone line on the wall ( the DSL )

technically speaking, are these two machines considered to be on one LAN ?!
If so ...
How can these 2 mahines be set to see each others drives and share a printer ?

2002-04-28 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi,

Hi All,

On my machine that dual boots Linux 8.1 and Win89 ( which I have no CD burner
on )
I need to do the following:

1- tar and zip my /home folder and save it on the D: partition ( a win fat32
partition )

2- I'll split the partition I have linux on right now into two partitions: /
and /home

3- I'll do a fresh install

4- then I want to restore the /home I just saved on the win partition to the
new /home I just created.

I need somebody to tell me what are the commands I need to run for the taring
and zipping, and then untarring and unzipping into the new /home directory :)

( in details please, but not with the regular: do a command -x option
without the quots thing )

And If everything went fine, will my mail that I saved in a folder under KDE be
saved as well ? or no ?

thanks for your patience :)

RE: [newbie] ssh / telneting

2002-04-24 Thread Hanan Shargi

Okay how about when you want to telente to a computer that is behind a
firewall ?

my linux box home is part of a network and I think it is behind a firewall (
not really a firewall but a router I guess ) meaning that all PC's here share
one IP on the internet ( and every on's got an internal IP inside ). When I
visit some sites that allows me to see the IP address of my machine, I see a
port number as well.

SO, does this mean I can telnet to my PC using this IP+ port combination: say
telnet 111.222.333.444:454 ?? ( assuming I let the telnet/ssh option open in
my firewall ) ??

[newbie] RE: gaim went silent ?!

2002-04-19 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi again,

I fixed this problem, I thought I'd post the solution so that the person who
said he/she share the same problem would fix it too and enjoy sounds again :)

go to:
Tools | preferences | Sounds

then in the options box | Sound Method == choose : Command

and when the box below Command becomes activated type the following:

soundwrapper play %s

choose whatever .wav files that you want or just leave the default ones,
and BINGO your sounds will start playing again :)

Hi All,

this is not exactly a Mandrake question, but I dont know where to ask it ..
so
bare with me please :)

all of the sudden my gaim went silent !! no sounds when incoming messages,
nor
outgoing, nor when contacts on my list sign in or out ... donnow why ?!
the sounds preferences are set to : ESD, I dont know what does that stands
for
but I tried the other options, and non worked also.

I had set the sounds to play .wav files that I specified in the preferences,
and they used to work fine. I dont remember doing anything that could'v
effected this.

there are other programs that are using the sound system or anything ...

I also upgraded to gaim 0.56 today ... !

any clues ?

Re: [newbie] NetBEUI on Linux?

2002-04-04 Thread Hanan Shargi

Is there a way to get my Mandrake 8.1 laptop to see my Windows desktop using
NetBEUI? Can't use TCP/IP at the moment because the desktop's ip is assigned
 via the cable modem.

Wally,

I have a similar situation, but with LM on the notebook and W2k on the
desktop.
( my notebook doesnt travel alot theough ).

Like someboy here suggested in the theread,I also suggest that you make LM
your gateway to the internet, you cna do that either by:

1) using internet connection sharing from Mandrake control center.
2) Or by editting the /etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.cfg file in case you are
running bastill ofcourse ( and you can know if you are running bastill or not
either by looking for a line that says: starting bastille firewall [OK] or by
running the command ( as root: /etc/rc.d/init.d/bastille-firewall status in
the console ( u should see a set of lines scrolling through the screen if it
is working ).

read my thread on this where LOTS of this List's Knights helped me out on this
:)
it was under the name: [newbie] iptables / ipchains / bastille ??!! you will
find some of the files that need to be configured and some very usefull info.

but even without making linux your gateway, I belive you can still make win
your gateway with little effort,( I heard that from somebody , yet I'm not
aware of how much is this little effort :)

Good Luck.

2002-03-30 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hello again,

There seemed to be a missing post somewhere ..as I found some suggestions in
Gerald's reply whcih I never seen before !?

Anyway, I tried configuring the bastille-firewall.cfg with the notes in this
post, and I finally was able to ping the linux box from the w2k machine
:)

yet I cannot do that by hostname : e.g I can only ping 192.168.0.1 but not by
the machines name although it is correctly listed in the hosts file on the w2k
machine.

ALso when I ran:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/bastille-firewall start

I got the following warning:

You have Bastille configured for masquerading and
you have enabled Mandrake's Internet Connection Sharing.
We will use Bastille's rules. To get rid of this
warning, use DrakConf to disable Internet Connection Sharing
or disable Bastille's ICS by setting IP_MASQ_NETWORK to
in /etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.cfg

Shall I really disable connection sharing in mandrake control center ?
or can I just ignore this ?

And now I wanna make sure I understood this situation correctly:
its Bastill-firewall who does the iptables rules implicitly ? so one should
not use iptables anymore if he/she is running bastille ?

THANKS A LOT Brian and Gerald :)

Re: [newbie] iptables / ipchains / bastille ??!!

2002-03-30 Thread Hanan Shargi

I added all the ### entries

I'm very very thankful, you cant imagine how this problem was getting on my
nervs !!

Be careful of the hosts file in windows.
 192.168.0.1 hanan.localnet.tld hanan
The '1' in 192 must be at the absolute begining of the line
 no spaces, no tabs

I checked that, it is written correctly.

Any way I wot bother now with why cant I ping the machine with its name rather
than with its IP :)

 Try setting IP_MASQ_NETWORK to first
If that doesn't work then try disable connection sharing
It may be that they are mutually exclusive.

I did that and the messag disapeared, now it tells me this :

[root@hanan hanan]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/bastille-firewall start
Enabling Mandrake Internet Connection sharing
If you would like to use Bastille's masquerading
support instead, edit /etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.cfg
(especially the IP_MASQ_NETWORK setting) and run
 /etc/rc.d/init.d/bastille-firewall start
to use Bastille's masquerading/connection sharing rules.

And the ping is still working, so I guess I'm fine with that too :)

Now I gotta move on to the main issue which is how can I share the files
between the 2, shall I go samba ? or ftp ?

 does it say hanan.homelan.com ?

[newbie] iptables / ipchains / bastille ??!!

2002-03-28 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi every one,

I spent the past 2 days ( almost ) reading about how to set ip masquerading ,
iptables, ipchains, setting NFS etc. just to be able to put my hands on
the problem why cant my w2k machine ping the linux machine ( both on a lan
where linux machine has 2 eth cards, one IP for external network (internet
with a static IP ) and the other eth for local network with IP 192.168.0.1 )
to hopefully fix this ping issue, SO FINALLY I'd be able to share my files
between the 2 machines

needless to say I couldnt come up with the fix :(
Now I desperatly need some expert here (or non expert ) to answer my
following question PLEASE :(

During a thorough investigation of the files on my LM 8.1 system which I set
up as a router to my home lan ( I set up the internet sharing and networking
stuff ..ect using Mandrake control center)
I found that there are the following files on my LM 8.1 sys:

/etc/Bastille/bastille-firewall.cfg

I'll list the relevant contents of this file ( only uncommented lines )

REJECT_METHOD=DENY

ICMP_OUTBOUND_DISABLED_TYPES=destination-unreachable time-exceeded

-

and this file :
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall === which have the following content:

# Automatically added by drakgw
[ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing ]
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing

# Mandrake-Security : if you remove this comment, remove the next line too.
echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/rp_filter
-

And another file :

/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4 which have the following content:
#!/bin/sh
modprobe iptable_nat
echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQUERADE
/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -p udp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -p tcp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -p udp --sport bootps --dport bootpc -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -p tcp --sport bootps --dport bootpc -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -p udp --dport domain -j ACCEPT
/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -p tcp --dport domain -j ACCEPT

I tried applying some changes to the peceeding files, and it resulted in
either no changes / or breaking the connection sharing ..

If somebody can tell me what exactly shall I change, or even how does this
connectiong sharing / bastille firewall basically work together to support the
internet sharing and routing thingas the more I read in the how-tos the
more lost I feel... as nothing seem to be as they describe in these how-to's.

Any help would be appreciated AS I'm totally lost here.

2002-03-25 Thread Hanan Shargi

Sorry, the bastille firewall IS ON,
I tried service bastille-firewall stop and some rules scrolled on the screen
= it was working ():-)

but after i stopped it, I noticed the following:
1- I lost the connection sharing , the win machine cannot see the internet
anymore.
2- I CAN ping 192.168.0.1 = linux machine from w2k !!

I also noticed something else ( I noticed this a few days ago ) every time I
change the following line in /etc/hosts file :
192.168.0.1 hanan.myisp.comhanan

to

192.168.0.1 hanan.homelan.com hanan ( chnage the host nam to
reflect the my local lan )
it reverts back to the isp lan ??

does this have to o with DHCP ?? does DHCP run automatically when one sets
connection sharing ?
If somebody kows about a place to read about this network setting and DHCP by
editing the actual files tha need to be edited, I'd like to ge rid of al this
GUI confusing settings.
for I still dont know WHY does control center BELIEVES that I have eth cards
!! when I only have 2 !!

[newbie] I got the 2nd NIC start another round ?

2002-03-12 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi All,

Its me again, I'm glad the Shame we live in diff countries mail got this
much replies today :) Now lets not let this take us away form our main list
objective ;-)

If you remember I asked for your cooperation in my little project ( connecting
a linux and a W2K machine through a mini LAN, and then to the Internet keeping
in mind my sort of not traditional DSL setup.

One good reply from Robin, who gave me this tip for how to physically connect
the 2 machines:

if you want to use your computer for sharing

 Wall jack - computer1 - computer 2

2 NIC for computer 1 and 1 NIC for computer 2

SO, I got the second NIC ( fast huh ? and you thought you'r gonna have some
headache free time ;) )

I plugged the 3com pcmci card in, it was recognized by MD, YET in the control
center under networking it shows 3 (yes 3) eth0, eth1, eth2 !!
I didnt bother to see why, and I went on to set the cables this way :

cable coming from wall == eth0 (10.0.x.x in the LM machine )
cable coming out from second NIC == eth1 (192.168.0.1 the LM machine == hub
cable coming out from W2K machin == (192.168.0.2) == hub
the 2 cables go to regular ports on the hub ( none goes to the uplink port)

I set the hosts file on W2K as following:
192.168.0.1hanan.my_isp_domain.com
192.168.0.2w2k.my_isp_domain.com

,and gave the TCP/IP configurations the following values:
IP : 192.168.0.2
DNS : the IPs of the DNS the ISP gave me.
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

LAN is not working machines cannot see each other.
where do i start ?

. suggestions, hints, questions, All welcomed :)

[newbie] Do I need 2 NIC for connection sharing ?

2002-03-10 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi,
I need some advise ( actually I'd rather specifuc steps :)) to get from
Initial state below to Goal state ( also below ):

Initial State:
I have a 2 machines:
First machine: a dual booting notebook ( LM 8.1 + Win98 SE) connected to DSL +
printer.
Second machine: a dual booting Desktop ( LM 7.2 + W2K )
both have NIC installed.

Goal State:
I need the first machine always running linux, the second one always running
W2K, I want to connect them through a LAN ( bought a hub and some cables ) so
that the second machine can connect to internet through the first one, and I
need both machines to see each other's hard drives, and share the printer.

DO I need 2 NIC's installed on the first machine to be able to do this ?( one
to hold the LAN IP , one to hold the DSL IP )

All contributions welcomed :)

Re: [newbie] Do I need 2 NIC for connection sharing ?

2002-03-10 Thread Hanan Shargi

Dennis, you gussed it I have many questions, here is the starter:

If I'm to set the NIC IP in the first machine to have 192.168.0.1 address ,
then where does the IP that I'm given by the ISP gonna go ?!?
and I dont have a DSL modem, the building is prewired for DSL, there is a
cable that comes out of the phone jack on the wall, and this cable's other end
goes into my NIC card.

My ISP will win the prize for the worst tech support ever and they dont
support WIN$ not to mention linux !!
but here are the settings they gave me to set the DSL connection:
my host name : hanan
domain name: company.com
gateway : 10.0.0.x
2 DNS IP's :
and my static IP: 10.0.0.xx
and thats about it

SO where do I go from here ??

Dennis you are right,

maybe I wasnt clear when i described it, it is a cat5 cable that runs frp, my
NIC to the adapter in the wall ( the adapter then adpats it to a regular phone
like output excuse my informal description )

If I got you right ,, I think all i have to do is set the W2K machine to have
IP 10.0.0.2 and make her gateway the first machine ?
I think I'm missing something here if so then where does IP masq comes in
? and where is the part where I have to set hosts files and all that ??

[newbie] Is it Reiser or is it something else ?

2002-03-09 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi All,

I Spent last night in an infinit loop of reinstalling LM 8.1 on a new
machine, till I dropped asleep!!!
here is the full story...

Got a new P4 desktop machine with, 256 RAM and a 40G HD drive and had the
following intention: make it a dual boot machine ( as simple as that used to
be )
I did the following:

- The machine originally came with Win98SE on it.
- installed Partition Magic 4 (yeah I know they'v reached Ver 7 now ).
- partitioned the 40G disk into the following:
* shrinked the WIN 98 partition to 3G Fat32 called WIN_C
* created a 250 Linus Swap
* created a 13G Linux native
* some free space
* the last 10G of the drive made it a Fat32 WIN_D ( to be used for windows
data )

- done with the partitioning, I installed W2K
- done with the W2K installation, started installing LM 8.1
- chose expert install, but now i got the idea of using the Reiser file
system, and have the /home directory on a sperate patition (for future easy
upgrading)

So, I deleted the 13G ext2 partition ( that I created in Partition Magic) and
created 2 new partitions with the Reiser file sys: first one is: 3G with /
mount point, second one is 8G with /home as mount point. , and went on with
installation.

Installation went fine till the last CD ( 3rd) was done, after the window that
says: finished copying files, an error message appered saying:
AN ERROR OCCURED, SOME IMPORTANT FILES WAS NOT COPIED,
then one saying: CANNOT FIND LHLIST, THIS IS PROBABLY CAUSED BY A BAD OR
CORRUPTED CD OR CD DRIVE, CHECK THE CD WITH AN INSTALLED MACHINE WITH : rpm
-qpm Mandrake/RPMS... bla bla

I was confused what could have gone wrong ?! SO

I started the instllation again and changed the / partition to ext2 same
thing happend
I started it again changing both partitions to ext2...same thing
started again and chose not to install 3rd CD guess what ? same error msg
!

I know the CD Drive is working fine, and the CD is fine too I used it to
install LM on another 3 machines before...

CAN anybody tell me what can I do ? I ran out of ideas for the next install

I know that was long sorry but my night last night was long too :-)

started it again

[newbie] share the DSL more

2002-03-02 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi All,

I'll get str8 to the point here

I have a (PC with Win98 on it and will install LM on it too ) + a Notebook
that dual boots Win + LM. The notebook has an NIC connected to DSL internet (
no DSL modem just an Rj45 running from the NIC to the wall , with an internal
IP 10.x.x.x then connects to the internet through the ISP's router in the
building)

I want to be able to do the following:

1- I want the notebook to be running Linux all the time, the PC running win (
most of the time )
2- Connect the PC and the notebook through a LAN, so I can see files both
ways ( see win files from linux and vice versa ) .
3- Use the printer from both machines.
4- access the internet from both machines.

Now, I have read some articles here and there ( IP masquerading, setting up
Linux/Win LANs, SAMBA... ) yet I'm not sure which I need to do first, which I
dont need to do at all , and ofcourse after reading a typical HOWTO I ended up
more confused than before I read it !!!

can anybody who feels like helping, give me an outline of what shall I do
here ??
ANY suggestion will be most appreciated.

IIRC, I had to force an upgrade of mozilla. ie.

rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force mozilla-0.9.xmdk.ix56.rpm

I just checked and I have both /usr/lib/libnssckbi.so and
/usr/lib/mozilla/libnssckbi.so installed. The first one is from the libnss3
package which couldn't be uninstalled (IIRC) because netscape (or was it
evolution) needed it.

The force has not caused any problems for me. Mozilla, netscape (and
evolution) work fine.
