[newbie] OT websites

2005-02-17 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

I have a server here at home that I mess around with running a none
too interesting family site :-)

I have a second site that i would like to get up and running.

I was wondering if its possible to run two totally separate websites
from one server on the same IP.

Cheers

I do not get any that are not picked up by either my filters or
 clamav.

They get picked up but I get an annoying message sent to me by Clamav
saying a message with a virus was sent and has been quarantined.

So I get a mail to me to delete and a .msg and a .log file to get rid
of from the server. I really must play around with it so that it just
deletes the darn things...

I got a massive 215 from DHTMLcentral this morning.

Yes, your MSN monicker is indeed correct. You are a sillydilly.

Well OK then rather that telling me how stupid I am why not
make some sort of constructive suggestion.

I did a who-is search on host14-206.pool8172.interbusiness.it and got
bugger all.

Found out the IP to be 81.72.206.14

I tried -

ipchains -A INPUT -s 81.72.206.14 -j DROP

But my server does not seem to have ipchains or at least it did not
recognise the command and yes I was logged in as root.

Ideally what I want to do is to get my server to just say Bog off
when the delivery attempt is made.

But I don't know how to do that.

I had hoped that adding the IP or the sender details to the black list
of Spam Assassin might do this but it does not.

I guess the best thing would be to do a /dev/null in my procmail
script if I had the faintest idea how to do that.

Please remember not everyone that frequents this list has a computer
science course under their belt or has had systems admin training. I'm
just one guy running a server from home just because for me its a fun
hobby. Everything I know I've had to pick up by asking silly questions
on lists like this!

Cheers

Re: [newbie] Virus laden e-mail

2004-12-16 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

OK I've read with interest some of your replies. It would seem that
what I have actually been doing is rejecting any emails sent to me
whereby the user is not registered on my server.

It would seem that the option in my server manager panel that handles
postfix and that I thought was bouncing them back was not! It is
actually sending a reject code 554 when the user is not recognised to
the originating server. I did not realise it did this and only found
out by asking on the user forum for my server's version of Linux. I
was only coherently able to do this because of the helpful comments I
gleamed from this list!

Just goes to show my server has been very well set up, with fools like
me in mind, so we don't make monumental admin screw ups!

I am sorry about my loose terminology which I think may have been the
cause of all this.

However in my defence it did spawn a useful dialogue.

Basically my home network (for those interested) consists of -

1 x Linux server

2 x Mandrake 10.1 Official workstations (for me and the wife to do
most of our computing - these are the only machines that have been set
up to get e-mail)

1 x Winblows box (I use some complicated mapping software that won't
run under wine, and also a Internet database of Rights of Way that I
use is only compatible with IE. For some reason the scripts just won't
work properly in Mozilla and there are too few Linux people using it
to justify the creators spending the time to fix it. Not ideal but I
can cope with it as I have to have the machine for the mapping
software anyway)

I use three accounts for email. Two of them are used for lists and
public forums and are pop accounts. One does all the computer related
stuff and the other handles all the other misc interests I have :-).
The last one is my own private addy that is on my server and that I am
careful who I tell about!

My server does receive mail direct. I have to use my ISP for SMTP to
send mail from this particular address, or as I found out it in
another of my learning curves, it ends up getting reported as spam!

I have ClamAV installed on the server and I also have Spam Assassin
but I think I need to do some research as I don't think I am using it
to its full potential.

Anyway it seems to have done the trick as the problem seems to have
resolved itself.

Cheers

Hi

Its a windows virus -

Zafi.D

It seems it gets your address from somewhere and then starts sending
you an email every 2 seconds.

I have set up so they all go straight to the trash but it sure is a
pain in the neck as I am having to remove from the trash about 1800
every hour.

Glad I've got some reasonable bandwidth or my Internet connection
would have locked up solid by now.

Charles do you know if there is an update for Sylpheed-claws around
the corner for 10.1?

I'm using the rpm's from 10.0 off your site at the moment and they do
work but I get one or two odd things in 10.1 that were not there in
10. Like for example every time I exit the program it throws a wobbly.

Its nothing to worry about I don't think and I can live with what I
have for a while.

Just curious that is all :-)

[newbie] URPMI oddity

2004-03-26 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

I keep getting this message whenever I use URPMI:

unable to take medium distrib_ftp.club-internet.fr_i586_10.0 into
account as no list file
[/var/lib/urpmi/list.distrib_ftp.club-internet.fr_i586_10.0] exists

I am sure its something benign and unimportant but it annoys me (I'm
like that!) and I would like to get rid. I assume there must be some
file somewhere I have to edit or something?

I have tried updating and even removing and adding the sources again.

[newbie] Mozilla FTP oddities

2004-03-26 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

I am setting up an FTP page for some of my friends to use.

Only thing is it works fine for Internet Explorer but in Mozilla when
you click the link you just get a new page open with what looks like raw
code. I do come across this occasionally with some ftp sites.

You can download using Mozilla if you right click the link and
choose save target as. Anybody know what the issue is and how I get
the link to the file to download to work properly under Mozilla for
those lazy gits that expect to just select the link and it works.

Cheers

Hi All

I need to use my scanner and despite my best attempts I can't get Xsane

When ever I try to use it I get all kinds of silly errors (The scanner
worked last week under 9.2).

What I need is an alternative to Xsane that I can try to get working.

Anybody seem anything that has RPMs for 10?

Re: [newbie] OT Email problems

2004-03-23 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
I think the problem is with your ISP been consider a spammer, not you.

Yes somebody told me that many people are blocking my ISP en-bloc. I
beleive its because they have a very poor security policy (I suspect
they have been used for relaying spam?) and the amount of spam I get in
my official account is rediculous. I occasionally go in to it online
and delete the pages of it :-(

It seems that my problem arose when I upgraded my server. I did not
realise that my mailer was sending my emails direct from my MX rather
than using the relays of my ISP which was causing them to get caught in
spam filters. I have to tell the server to send them to my ISPs relays
and then everything got fixed. Don't remember having to do that last
time I set up the server. Either that or it was not a feature in the
last version.

Anyway I assume the bounces are from somebody subbed to this list then?

Re: [newbie] Problems with MDK 10

2004-03-14 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

Right sofar -

Managed to get updates to work from the terminal using one of the club
mirrors.

Xsane now recognises my scanner after I unpluged it and pluged it back
in again but still does not work. Seems to be seriously broken - its a
HP scanjet 6200C and was working fine under 9.2. The GUI just comes up
blank and freezes.

I have managed to get Xine to work from the terminal installing
libdvdnav, libdvdread, and libdvdcss. For some reason trying to run it
from the link on the menu just causes it to dissappear when you try and
play a DVD. It still won't play audio CD either.

I can't get any sound out of KsCD (Yes I do have the audio cable on the
back connected to the audio card). But then I've never managed to get it
to work on this system. I just used to use Xine or Totem.

Totem won't play Audio - I get totem could not play this media (Audio
CD) although a plugin is present to handle it. I've tried googling on
it but got nothing much of any sense back. It does however play MP3s.

I am wondering if I am missing some vital RPM from Gstreamer or
something.

 /etc/X11/menu.xml

Got it! Its actually in /etc/X11/xfce4 on mine and is called menu2.xml
:-)

but it will not help you the edit that file.

I see what you mean! Its got everything listed there but only about
1/3rd actually appears on the menu when you right click it.

If you used my rpms then right mouse clip should list Mandrake which
will give you the standard Mandrake menu listings. If the item you
wish is not there simply use menudrake to add it.

Great thanks.

That's odd it comes up for me. Are you using 9.2 or 9.1?

[newbie] editing Mpeg home video

2003-12-27 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
Hi

About a year or so ago I asked about a program that would allow me to
split mpeg home videos into smaller sections.

However a lot of water under the bridge since then and I'm in a new
install of 9.2 for a while now and find myself in the same boat but
unfortunatly can't remember what the name of the program was and I can't
remember what the name of the thread was either for the archives.

Anybody got any recommendations?

If you should decide to manually dl the pkgs rather than use urpmi you
will need to also dl and install libetban0-0.31 which is also on the
 site.

I am not sure if its linked to the etban or not, but for those who
manually download and install these, I had to load a couple of rpms to
satisfy some dependencies libdb4.1-devel and libdbtcl-4.1

Cheers Charles!

Re: [newbie] Sound question this time

2003-12-10 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
What *relevant stuff* might that be? :-)

You should have something similar to this (This is for my card) -

alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-cs46xx
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 cs46xx
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
options snd major=116 cards_limit=1 device_mode=0666
options snd-cs46xx index=0

I have NO idea what I am doing here remember! I need to know what I am
looking for and how to configure it correctly. Can you be a little
 more specific?

Well you would need to go to www.alsa-project.org and get the exact
details for your card.

HOWEVER

I went there and tried to find your card and it was not listed (not
anywhere I could see anyways!).

I think you may have to check and make sure this card is supported by
ALSA as if not it will not work.

If its not supported you could just disable it in the BIOS (or jumpers
on the motherboard) and then go get something that is compatible. I
understand Creative soundblasters are fairly good and easy to setup and
use.

[newbie] To be sung to Ode to Microsoft

2003-11-19 Thread Inhabitant of Zion
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,
and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash,
then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall.

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse;
then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'cuz sure as I'm a poet,
the sucker's gonna hang.

When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk,
and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk,
then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM,
and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

Has anyone ever made a Mandrake webcam server?

I could not get a Linux driver for my _really_ obscure webcam. I could
not get the winblows software to work with wine so in the end I bunged
XP on a old Digital Ppro 200 and networking it to my server. XP seems to
be able to manage it and it runs quite happily for months at a time
without any intervention.

You can get webcam server stuff for Mandrake. I guess its just a case of
making sure you can get a driver and working out how to set up the
program.

[newbie] Sound modules, kernel source and my head hurts!

Hi

I am trying desperatly to get my sound card to work under 9.2.

ALSA seems to load OK and I don't get any error messages. I have set up modules.conf
as per the details page for CS46XX.

However when I start Kmix I get a blank GUI with no functions and if I go into gnome
it tells me there is a problem with /dev/sequencer and that I should check that I have
the right modules configured in the kernel.

I am using the default smp kernel and figure I need to get the kernel sources rpm down
- but I am unsure what is the right version and also don't understand how I then go
about tweaking the smp-kernel so the sound modules are all correct.

what would that have to do with anything? And how?

Well the whole point of urpmi is it works out dependencies and goes
and gets the needed rpm's and installs it all. Now if its scuttling off and
getting the wrong rpm's, which in your case it is, then something is broken
somewhere. This is just my simple logic and anyway it is a good idea to
update regularly your urpmi anyway!

I was able to urpmi kopete 7.1 (texstar version) or 6.2 last night and it
installed fine.

How:

urpmi.update -a

If that don't work mail me again (off list if you like) and I'll download
the rpm's and send them to you.

Basically the new protocol will only work, even with the new Kopete, up

I think its going to spell trouble for them as I know there are people who

he said it will be version 0.8 of kopete. i didnt found something, i've

Yes but who in their right mind would sign that EULA?

Yes a number of my friends have already decided to go over to ICQ.

Unfortunately the Jabber GUI for Windows users is not nearly as nice as ICQ

BTW Anne yes this is for hotmail users as well as the EULA is in regard to

 Gentoo is about 4 light-years
 ahead of the stable Debian.

I agree with that. Emerge and Portage is a way better system than apt and
.deb because it uses source in a simple, uncomplicated and efficient way.

Personally I hate debian with a passion.. yes, sorry to say it, I _don't_
 like it at all.

I don't like it either. I have it on my Sun Ultra 5 because its the only
version of Linux that works and runs well on it.

No but seriously, to get back to the question, what is the so-called link
between these two distros? I'm interested / confused.

I think they are clubbed together just because they take the non Redhat
RPM route.

However it has to be said it is theorectically possible to use Portage on
any Linux system.

Can't comment on the security thing as I know nothing about it!

I have gone back to the 6.2 version. I have no end of trouble with the

Setting the thing up is fairly easy. You go into settings and select which

Can you (or someone else who might be a K expert!) please explain, in
VERY simple terms, exactly how I simply do this? I know how to drag
and copy an icon from the menu, but as the menu icons no longer work at
all, is it possible to create new ones from scratch?

Right click on start applications button - Menu editor - Select
Networking- WWW (if this is what you have in your menu for web browsers)
then select add entry.

It will ask for title and command. The command line is the sym link to the
exec for the program (mozilla).

If you have more than one instance of Mozilla you won't be able to put
mozilla in there but will need to give it the full path (i.e. something
like /usr/local/bin/mozilla). Then just select the image you want for the
button and save it all and exit. it should work. If it just flashes and
nothing happens then you have got the path wrong.

BTW I personally have upgraded Mozilla many times and its never not worked
yet!
