but so far not when i disconnect it from electricity.
i will visit my electrician friend and see what he can measure :-)

that was excellent advice, thank you, Aron and the other helpers.
my friend measured voltage flowing through usb to the ground

i was disappointed to have to pressure the large dealer

i cited the experts from the mandrake list and succeeded :-)

Did you discharge static electricity before plugging in the USB connector?
The flash is NOT expected. There's not really enough current that should
be drawn to create such a flash.

This sounds more like a static discharge or a bad ground then anything
normal. You should not see any flash when you plug in a USB device. The
USB connector does have 2 pins for power, but these make connection
after the grounded body of the plug is making contact with the USB
socket, so even if there were a spark, you would not see it.

One thing that can cause problems is if you have a separate power
connection for your USB hard drive, and the power supply for it, and the
one for the computer, as plugged into different wall outlets. By this, I
mean outlets located at different points on the wall, or workbench. If
they are on different circuits, and take different paths back to the
electrical box, you can end up with different "ground" levels on the two
outlets. The difference is usually not that great, but a 2 volt
difference means a lot to computers. The problem is worse if you do not
have properly grounded outlets.

2005-04-06 Thread Joe Mecklin
assuming (i know that's a dangerous practice) the
case/motherboard/power supply are all properly designed, the grounding
will be builtin such that you really don't have to worry about it, but
here are some things to look for:

the power supply will have a black wire as part of its wiring harness
for each connector; this will be the grounding lead that keeps the
power "common" with the surrounding metal so those "flashes" are
dissipated before they can do damage.

about the only things you can check on the motherboard are that the
mounting screws are tight/snug, and that all cards/connectors are
firmly seated.

the case is basically the same as the motherboard in this particular
scenario, in that the only things to check are the tightness of the
mounting hardware and any connectors to indicator
lights/usb/firewire/com/lp/etc plugs.

from your description it would appear you have a grounding problem
with your pc, or a defective hard drive. the electric flash as you
plug it in (before the system can recognize/initialize it) should not
be a control signal per se, but rather is likely extraneous current
that improper grounding is letting reach circuitry it shouldn't.

Try looking under Tools -> Auto Correct/Auto Format -> Auto Correct -> Options

Then un-check the boxes for URL Recognition. No guarantees, I haven't tried it
since I installed MDK 10.1 a week ago.

It is, indeed, a nuisance when all you want to do is correct a typo or some
such and have the browser pop up.

Autopatcher XP allows you to download all security patches and updates for
WinXP and install them via CD before you connect to the Net which is a VERY
GOOD THING. I would look into it. And would definitely leave the ethernet
cable totally unplugged until I had all the patches and items below installed
via CD.

http://www.autopatcher.com/

Adaware,
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot Search & Destroy,
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/

I would get both at a minimum.

AvG antivirus free edition http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
I personally like this one because the updates are frequent but not obtrusive
and they update the virus engine but do it more rarely. That makes it easier
to maintain on a slow dialup connection. Some of the others are good but
frequent engine updates make them bothersome if you are on a dialup
connection.

Kerio Personal Firewall is free for personal use, I would definitely replace
the default firewall in XP SP2 with Kerio.

Consider routing through a Linux device or buying a standalone router device
for Internet connection. It provides an additional layer and NAT is a good
thing to have for any Window Box. Don't turn on File and printer sharing if
you have a direct net connection. If you have a Linux box, route printing
and file sharing through that box with a fat32 partition.

Some other great tools, Ccleaner is a freeware tool that does a great job of
cleaning up erroneous registry entries. Spybot Search&Destroy has an
innoculation routine, run it before connecting to the net.

If you absolutely must run p2p software, check out:
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=1
for the Blocklist Manager. Practice safe p2p.

I will probably remember some other stuff later but this is a minimum off the
top of my head.

Hello Graham
Anyhow, what I want to know is what is the best way to recover data
from a hard drive that is about to fail, but contains part of my

running. Can I install it as a slave disk an access it through a new
Mandrake installation or perhaps a live CD distribution? Or are there
other ways?

I realise this isn't exactly a Mandrake specific topic but there is
more concentrated computer wisdom here than any other place I know so
I hope you can steer me right.

The method that you mention is perhaps the safest, ie. install it as a
slave disk, etc. I have done that sort of thing many times. As long as
you are methodical and logical, you should be OK. I have done this with
Redhat 5.2, SCO OpenServer, SCO UNIX 4.2, MS-Dog, and various versions
of Mandrake from version 7.1 up. Most recently I did it with Mandrake
10.1beta2. It is a good way of upgrading your system as well as a way of
recovering data from an ailing drive.

Once you have installed your new drive, simply run drakconf (diskdrake)
and set up the mount points and off you go!

Thanks Dennis. I just spent a few hours surfing around my local
(Danish) resellers, found hundreds of USB sticks, but no one - that
is NO ONE - specified anything but Windows or Mac.

Then, my daughter gave me her wish-list for Christmas : a MP3

- that Sweden is way ahead of Denmark. At a Swedish company (Jens

1. Can function as an USB memory stick (512 MB)
2. Is fully Linux compatible.

Ordered it on the spot (please don't tell my daughter).

Alan, would you please add that to the Community TWiki Hardware Compatibility

Isn't that a bit of overkill for a firewall? I was running a firewall,
web server (static pages) and e-mail gateway on a P-75 with 32Mb RAM and a

I wouldn't say it was impossible to keep a Windows machine secure. Behind a
good firewall and then disconnect the keyboard, remove the CDROM and Floppy
and allow no software to be installed and use no software on the machine and
you can probably set a record for NOT getting pwned, at least on a Win
machine.

Now, if you actually use the machine, I would make no bets at all.

If you do get a USB stick , Mandrake should detect it with no probs. I
picked up my first USB stick yesterday, plugged it in and Mandrake
detected it and created and icon for it on the screen automatically.
Currently I am playing a few MP3s from it right now.

That caring father was me

I got gazillions of good advice from this very list, re-installed
WindowsXP on her disconnected box, downloaded AVG antivirus, Spybot
Search&Destroy, ClamAV, AdwareSpy and whatnot via my linux box,
burned the whole kaboodle onto CD and installed it on her - still
disconnected - box.

Then we connected to the internet and downloaded something called
ServicePack 2 from WindowsUpdate. Within two hours her Windows box
was severely infected anew.. Go figure.

Now, my daughter uses her Windows box completely disconnected from
everything.  When she wants something from the net, she uses her
account on my Mandrake box and transport it via floppy or CD to her
box. (Maybe a USB memory stick could come in handy here ?)

Conclusion : unless you want to :
1. expose your father like being naked in a public place
2. make him known as a Netterrorist..
keep his Windows box completely insulated from everything, except
maybe the power outlet - although I'm not sure about that either.

it depends... if there's something there claiming that port, and you trust
that software, then why not???
open port 80, and send it to apache on windowsdoesn't do any harm. (though why
you'd want to run apache on windows i dunno).

it's all the other RPC ports that the worms exploit. (at least that's my
understanding, but i haven't been willing to touch a windows OS for years
now).

On your LAN? That's usually the difference.

A windows boxen behind something else (such as a router, or a linux box) is
much much safer than a windows boxen with an internal connection to the

I know he's your dad, and you want to help him, but there is a term you may be
familiar with: 'enabler', and you may or may not want to be one of those.

Sometimes, it's best to just let someone experience the hell that is running
Windows, keeping it from being infected withing 20 minutes of a clean install
(that's actually the average, according to SecurityFocus), keeping up with
endless and buggy updates [1], virus definitions, stopping spyware, etc., etc.

So, a little 'tough love' needed here? Or maybe you might just enjoy, just a
little bit, saying 'tolja so, Dad'.

Anyhow, I've been oft accused of being a 'zealot', so take this for what it's
worth, but Windows is a dead end, XP is leaving skid marks on the bowl, and it's
only going to get worse, much worse [2].

LOL! You always give me a chuckle, B., thanks.

I've come to the very difficult conclusion that I am no longer willing to 'help'
Windows users with the seemingly unending deluge of vulnerabilities. I feel like
I'm only helping the Borg maintain some semblance of stability.

It hurts me to say 'no' to my friends, but I feel worse when I think I'm
contributing to prolonging the plague that is MS Windows. Now that I know I can
offer them alternatives (Mandrake, Mepis, Xandros, Libranet, etc.) that will do
*everything* they need, it just doesn't make any sense to me to be one of the
ones helping plug the holes in a sinking ship when there's the rescue craft is
within easy reach.

Autopatcher XP
http://www.autopatcher.com/autopatcherxp.html

Current version only requires Windows XP SP 1a which you can also download
from the site and have on CD prior to installing Windows.

Here is a proposal that might work, however and that is to install Windows XP
and Mandrake both. Ask your father to stay off the internet when he uses
Windows and remove links to all browsers and such from Windows or even setup
a limited user account under windows and have him login to Win with that so
that network access is limited. Ask him to use Linux for all Internet
related activity.

If not that, then I would suggest downloading Firefox or another browser,
along with Spybot Search & destroy, Adaware, Kerio Personal Firewall, AvG
antivirus (all perfectly free for home use) and put everything onto a CD
before you install Windows. Then, install win, leave the modems and net
cards disconnected, install all of those apps along with the patches and then
you should be okay for about 2 weeks before the machine gets compromised.

2004-12-01 Thread Simon Roberts
Build him a firewall out of a $150 PC (P-III 400 or similar), or use one of
those router/switches that includes NAT. The D-Link ones, with an 802.11b
wireless thing and NAT are about $50, and will probably keep a lot more out
(leave the wireless disabled unless you really want it) than you'll be able to
do with hardening windows yourself. I take it he's not a game player looking
for P2P connectivity (which many of these NAT boxes can handle tolerably well,
but it'll reduce their effectiveness some I think).

Otherwise, there's a fairly reasonable couple of books from Osborne/McGraw Hill
in the "HackNotes" series. One is called "Network Security" and the other one
"Windows Security." They seem to enumerate most of the known weaknesses and
advise on how to handle them. The big problem seems to me to be that if you
don't put a firewall up, you'll end up shutting down so many services that the
system probably won't be as useable as he'll want.

Of course, the firewall-only solution won't handle the massive insecurities of
email and web-browsers in unwise hands. A little education might help him,
along with virus scanners and spyware detectors. Good luck, you're probably
going to need it ;>

Symantec has a useful "test yourself" scanner that you can launch at yourself
from a web browser which will warn of some of the worst excesses (again,
excluding email and web pages that install nasties) that are common in Windows
systems. (You'll find that you show up clean to their tests simply by
installing that NAT box).

Okay, so here's what's going on. I had ~thought~ I'd sold my dad on
letting me install Mandrake for him instead of windows when we
formatted his box to take care of the serious infestation he has going
in the thing... however, since I'd gotten him to agree, he's changed
his mind *Grumbles* So now I'm stuck with the evil and daunting task
of reinstalling windows and securing it so it doesn't get reinfected.
Ug.

So what I need from you guys? I remember there was a thread where one
of the members of our list was struggling with a windows computer for
something school related for his daughter. In the process of the
discussion, someone mentioned a site that one could download all the
windows updates from one spot (SP2 not included, I hope) so I could
download it on my mandrake box, and burn it to CD so I don't have to
plug my dad's computer into the Internet until I've got updates,
firewall/s, anti-virus program/s and Spyware Removal tool/s installed
and all the extra dren from HP that's not needed removed.

I tried searching the archives, but my search engine skills have never
been strong, especially when I'm using anything other than google. So
if someone could provide me with a quick link, I'd be grateful.
Though, I suppose, the other option is to just not bother, do a clean
install as HP instructs, and wait for the box to frell itself again,
and drive my dad to switching to Linux (or at least to buy a mac). But
as much as I'm sure some of you would rather encourage me to try the
latter option, I don't like the idea of all the extra work needed for
that, since it'll require the windows install, then the backup process
again, then the fresh mandrake install. And since this is an HP box,
I'm not sure how much of it is windows only sorts of hardware. All it
takes is my dad not being able to use one part of his computer he
needs, and he'll throw a fit and just go and buy a new windows
machine. Bah.

Thanks in Advance,
Amy

Re: [newbie] OT Recovering Data

2004-11-27 Thread Duncan Anderson
Hello Graham
Anyhow, what I want to know is what is the best way to recover data from a hard
drive that is about to fail, but contains part of my Mandrake installation (usr
& home) when I get a new box up and running. Can I install it as a slave disk
an access it through a new Mandrake installation or perhaps a live CD distribution?
Or are there other ways?
I realise this isn't exactly a Mandrake specific topic but there is more concentrated computer wisdom here than any other place I know so I hope you can steer me right.

Duncan

Don't think so Joe, I'm the 5yr linux newbie here. All I do is run a script

Okay, you just zoomed right by me in terms of configuring Postfix. I've never
ventured that far, ie. passing mail *back* to Postfix for alternate delivery, if
I even understand correctly what you are doing.

Procmail should be 'called' by Postfix by default. Usually, from what I
understand, it is Procmail which then calls the spam recipes/processes, and
delivers the mail as you direct, including passing mail back to Postfix as an
MTA.

Joe, let me ask you at least one more question, I've got postfix working in
this manner:

Nov 26 19:00:02 cpollock postfix/nqmgr[2195]: 3D2E3584005:

delay=3, status=sent (250 1cxQ0tvg3NZFpO0 Message accepted for delivery)

which is forwarding all my spam that I receive at my EL address to EL's
junkmail address. I guess its possible that I don't have much else to do
with it except possibly add in the procmail call?

And I apologize for the seemingly dumb questions.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with how this would work with skipping the Postfix step
in the process.

Perhaps KMail isn't seeing the mail in /var/spool/mail/chris as new mail, and so
is not delivering it to your inbox? Also, check in the KMail config to make sure
that the path to your mail spool is correct, I can see something like KMail
defaulting to /var/mail or something.

Postfix does not add much 'overhead' to the process, in fact the anti-spam
processing is going to take up a lot more. Why not save yourself the headaches
and go with a process that works off the bat?

Postfix also gives you the opportunity to expand this whole setup in the future,
as you can see if you read Derek Jennings' howto.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

Thanks Joe. I'm not running a mail server, just trying to cut down on some
of the overhead when Kmail calls spamc by using fetchmail > procmail. I've
done some more reading while waiting for replies and find that if I run
fetchmail -m procmail this will call procmail, which I've been able to see
happen while watching running processes.

But, now I see another problem. fetchmail picks up, apparently procmail
runs spamc, because looking in /var/spool/mail[chris] at the msg I can see
the spam check. I can see and read the msg in /var/spool/mail[chris] but

The only thing I would add is if you install fetchmail-daemon fetchmail will
automatically run every 3 minutes using the configuration
in /etc/fetchmailrc.
If you install just fetchmail it will not run automatically. You would need to
set up a cron job or something.

Also the test in fetchmailconf will not work while the daemon is running. You
have to stop the daemon first.

I don't see this as OT at all, though it's been covered quite a bit in past
threads and there are innumerable how-to's on the web. However, I'm kinda
thinkin' of switchin' from some very complicated Procmail filters to something
simpler, so I wouldn't mind seeing this thread expand.

Fetchmail is pretty simple. Install it, run 'fetchmailconf', yer done. If you
have Postfix installed ('urpmi postfix' if you don't), then you've already
arrived at the point where you can start the anti-spam thang. Fetchmail will
automagically hand off to Postfix, which will call Procmail, which would then
call whatever recipes/processes you want to implement to deal with spam, and
then deliver the mail accordingly.

And now, I will save Derek the trouble of posting a link to his page:

Re: [newbie] (OT) Reguarding reply-to and the gmail address

2004-10-31 Thread Amy
My friend was actually ranting on and on about the whole being lazy
and the list messing with the reply-to field, and things of that
nature, then eventually threw this link at me explaining why we
shouldn't be worrying about it in the first place because we should
have the reply-to set for the person, and use the reply to list
feature in our clients.

http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

There's the link if anyone cares to give it a read. Honestly, I'd just
like to have it so I'm not yelled at, or lectured over something I
can't help. I switch to gmail for the list recently because my
domain's been up and down like a seesaw due to an old mail server at
my host, or something like that (I'm getting the hosting for free, so
I can't really complain, nor do I get detailed reports when something
goes wrong), and I can't afford to pay for a host right now. So I'm
using what's available and otherwise seems to work. Weee.

At any rate,I've mentioned it to Google that I want the option to
disable the reply-to, now it's all on you guys to watch when you
reply, until Google either gives in, or the list plays the way
outlined in the above link. *shrugs*

~~ >^..^< ~~
I'm a gmail users! I'm still waiting on them to listen to my request
to allow me to disable my reply-to field. If you get this message via
a mailing list, please double check the to field before sending your
reply. Thanks much! ^_^

No, keyboard tasks are the default. I don't sort mesg's by
folder. If you look on the drop down menus on the tool bar, the
keyboard commands for Message and Edit are shown for each item.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 'L' key only work if you sort mail
into folders and set the 'list' parameter in the folder properties?

Well, I replied to the list just by replying to your post
Amy. The "Reply to:" problem is not just the responsibility of
the original poster. It is also the responsibility of those that
reply, to do so properly.

FWIW, I use Kmail and simply tapped the 'L' key to reply to
the list. The 'R' key would've replied only to you Amy. If I
chose to use a mail client without this simple feature, the
responsibility to reply properly is still mine.

 Several replies stating:
> > not fixed, still goes to Amy

So that is both Amy's problem and those who don't properly
reply. Complaints about top posting, lack of snipping, spam, and
'reply to' . only serve to generate more bandwith waste.

 Y'allsMMV

done so, could you do that too? If we bug them about it enough, maybe

Thanks, Franki. I ended up having to add another line to httpd.conf to
get it to work:

ScriptAliasMatch ^/~([^/]*)/cgi-bin/(.*) /home/$1/cgi-bin/$2

I use PopFile, and as a matter of interest some time ago I started to collect
virused emails into a separate folder (PF labels them virused, and KMail
filters them to the folder). On the rare occasions that one escapes PF's
notice, it re-classify it then delete it, but keep the other, quarantined,
mails so that I can use them as a teaching resource to inform win users.

This month looks like being a bumper month. I have 41 dated this month in my
folder so far.

Create a cgi-bin directory in parallel to your docs direcory and make
that the directory that is able to exec cgi scripts.

and then use ScriptAlias to make it available:
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/*/cgi-bin
That should get you on the right track.

Laura just got an emac with OSX, so i am learning my way through it.

Anyway, I won't be much help as far as installing linux-ish apps,
but it sure is nice to be able pop open a terminal and ssh, run
emacs, etc like i am used to. It realy is (to me) a breath of fresh
air compared to helping people with windows or the earlier mac os's.

There are the occasional huge annoyances like not being able to see
the entire path in the file manager, and Safari is very
uncomfortable to me (i installed firefox 1.0PR, which runs with a
couple bugs).
