Cosi' sara' + facile trovare qualcuno che magari e' nella tua stessa
situazione. Considera comunque che il supporto delle periferiche USB da
parte di Linux e' ancora in via di sviluppo.

In effetti USB sarà supportato (credo tutto sommato abbastanza bene)

Paul,
I tried out your suggestion and unfortunately chown didnt work..i also tried
to chmod a+rwx the file and that didnt seem to solve the problem either.
However, i did find out from your suggestion that the ownership was changed
from buck.buck to root.root .. i decided to try and delete all the
.Xauthority files in my home directory after backing them up of course (the
three files being: .Xauthority, .Xauthority-c, and .Xauthority-l) this seems
to have worked!! when i typed startx after I did that a new .Xauthority file
was written :D !! ! and i didnt get an error message WOO HOO!!! im stoked!!
i also figured out what was causing the error which may be helpful to some
of the other newbies out there that are getting the same thing... while i
was using X as a different user entirely i logged out back to console mode
.. then i switched to the superuser mode with the su command and typed
startx and went into an X window session when I logged out of that and
exited the su shell, the file ownership had changed to root and i began to
get the same error again.. what ill have to do now when i want to log into
and X session as root would be to switch virtual consoles and log in that
way ..at least i hope so ..

hopefully all this info helps someone out there .. i wish i'd known this

if you installed lilo in the master boot record of hda (which you probably
did) you may want to try typing fdisk /mbr at a dos prompt .. that will

windows on my primary hard disk and linux on my secondary and i always
uninstall lilo that way before i reinstall or install a new distro and it
doesnt affect my windows OS at all .. word to the wise you may want to back

i had the same problem with mandrake 7.0 not detecting all 128mb of my

where in the lilo.conf file to add it and it was tough (it ended up being
put here:

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hdb1
append="mem=128M"
read-only

before i installed mandrake i typed linux mem=128M at the boot: prompt and
it found it .. you may want to try typing linux mem=256M at your LILO:
prompt and make sure that linux can read all of your memory before trying to
edit the /etc/lilo.conf file (cat /proc/meminfo is the command you would use
to show your memory information) .. if this doesnt work you probably do have
out of sync memory and you would need to follow hellmut's recommendation..
however, if i was you i'd try this step first before you run out and
exchange your ram :)

Maybe you're already having one append- line in your lilo.conf, Linux will
only
read one them and ignore the other. Hopefully this is the solution to your
problem!

I've reinstalled linux I don't know how many times trying to get it to

append="mem=256M"
to the lilo.conf. I still can't seem to get it to recognize all of my
memmory. I just don't understand. It recognizes both of my processors
right
off the bat. I've read that the memmory configuration is stored in
/proc/meminfo. Can I manually edit this file to get Mandrake to see the
rest? Is there a configuration tool that can be used? What if I wanted
to
add memmory later, How would I go about it? Does it have anything to do
with
the size of my swap file? It's 256 meg. I'm really pleased with all of
madrake's functionality, but I'd really like to be able to utilize all
of my
memmory. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: [newbie] How do I mount a modem?

2000-06-06 Per discussione Jose M. Sanchez

Contrary to what others have told you, there is a step involved..

Assuming that Lothar reported your modem correctly, go to the console, or
Xterm and type this...

ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem

This creates a symbolic link so that programs know where the modem is...

Now while still in the Xterm, type "minicom".

This brings up a text based communication program.

It attempts to initialize the modem with a standard setup string...

You might or might not see an ok back from the modem...

type in

ATZ

you should get an "OK" back.

If this works everything is fine.

If this does not work, then you do not have your serial ports set up
properly, there is a problem with the modem itself, or you have a bad
cable...

Hello guys!

I just set up a linuxbox with ML7 (PIII 500Mhz, Voodoo3 16Mb, Soundblaster).
I had a little bit of trouble for changing resolution to 1024 but after a
few tries it was done. I still have some system configuration problems, but
I'll go one at a time.

I have a US Robotics V.90 56K external modem and I cannot use it. Lothar
tells me there is a modem in /dev/ttyS1. I am very very newbie, so I read
some man pages and looked in the book "Linux Unleashed" and found no modem
mounting. So I tried my self by the few things I learned about mounting. No
success. I guess mounting a modem must be a piece of cake, but how do I
mount my modem?

Thanks all in advance.

Re: [newbie] SCSI CD-ROM and CD writer not seen

2000-06-06 Per discussione Adam Chrystie

I do not have the link handy but do a search for the linux how-to sites
and read the section about setting up scsi cd roms.
I've attached the text that got my writer working though!! Mandrake failed to
setup my
CDROM writter but by following the instructions i got it working fine.

I got the same error you did too. I had to recompile and make some portions
modules to make it work..so be sure to get the latest 2.2.15 kernel and header
files if needed

Adam Chrystie

2. Setup the Linux-system for writing CD-ROMs

This section applies to the following types of CD-writers: SCSI, IDE/ATAPI and the
devices for the parallel port. USB CD-writers are not supported as of May 2000.
Non-SCSI writers require compatibility drivers, which make them appear as if they
were real SCSI devices. On the one side such a unifying strategy is easy
("everything is SCSI"), because on the application level you can share your
knowledge with other users regardless of their kind of CD-writer. On the other
side, you have to reconfigure applications like audio CD players or the mount
utility to reflect the change of the driver name. For example, if you accessed
your ATAPI CD-writer through the device file /dev/hdc before, you will have to
access it through /dev/scd0 after activating the SCSI compatibility drivers.

Once you succeed setting up your hardware and the rest of your Linux-system, the
command cdrecord -scanbus shows you a list of devices on your SCSI busses. The
goal of this section is to guide you in setting up your Linux-system, so that you
finally end up seeing something like:

shell cdrecord -scanbus

Listing: Detecting devices on your SCSI bus
The example was provided by Jörg Schilling and shows a total of four CD-writers.
Please note that -scanbus also reports other devices, e.g. regular CD-ROMs and
hard disk drives. The last column gives the SCSI description of the device, from
which you cannot clearly distinguish ordinary CD-ROM drives from those with
burning capability. But the product identification (middle column) often has hints
about the feature in form of a R, -R or -RW.

2.1 Quickstart
This section is an attempt to provide an fast and easy description of the
configuration. Not all possible setups are covered, but please go on and try it
out anyways. First of all, check the Linux kernel version printed by the command
"uname -r". It should be something like 2.0.X or 2.2.Y, where X is higher than 36
and Y is higher than 11. If you run older versions or the so called development
kernels, you are on your own. Installing a new kernel is as much work as fixing an
old one, so I have removed all hints you need for buggy kernels.

The listing below shows a set of commands you could start with. The commands
create device file entries under /dev unless they already exists.

test `whoami` = 'root' || echo "You must be root to execute the commands."
cd /dev/
umask -S u=rwx,g=rwx,o-rwx
./MAKEDEV loop || for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do mknod loop$i b 7 $i; done
./MAKEDEV sg   || for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do mknod sg$i  c 21 $i; done

Listing: creating of devicefiles
Hardware access is usally implemented through device files under Linux. So before
any other thing you make sure those files do exists in the directory /dev. Still
nobody could give me a compelling reason why this has not been automated through
techniques like the device filesystem (devfs). The devfs is available for years
know, brings a safer (!) and a far clearer naming of devices and makes the device
entries appear automatically under /dev. Some prominent people argue devfs is not
the perfect solution, but they do not come up with anything better, not even
something comparable and last but least nothing available and tested now. Lets
start to use devfs, so I can remove the above commands from this document. (
http://www.atnf.CSIRO.AU/~rgooch/linux/kernel-patches.html)

Next thing to ensure is, that the Linux kernel is equiped with the necessary
drivers. The following commands check various files for the presence of drivers in
the running Linux kernel. Usally the command "cdrecord -scanbus" should trigger an
automatic loading of all drivers. In case a driver is not present in the

figure out what went wrong. If you don't know what one is, I doubt there's
much in there that'll mean much to you. You can just delete it if you'd like.
 It won't f%$#@ up anything.

[newbie] Netcape/ftp

2000-06-06 Per discussione Piero

A couple of days ago, I decided to download a recent version af LICQ and the
corresponding version of Qt.
Using Netskape i contaced the coresponding sites and, whithin these sites, their
ftp direcories.

At this point, the location toolbar of Netscape showed a line beginning by
ftp:// . Fine.

But, instead of letting a slave window appear, asking if I
wanted to save the downloaded file, and in which directory, and under wihch
filename, the Communicator window started to become filled with lots of
apparently meaningless characters. I restarded everything a couple of times,
but got the same result.
Finally, I waited until the communcator window was totally
full, then I went to the file menu and choose the "save page" command. Very
happily so, since the saving resulted in a .tar.gz file in one case,
and in a .rpm file in the other case, and I have been able to use them in order
to install what I wanted to install.

Now, was all this normal? Or do I have to settle a ftp plugin in Netscape in
order to have a more "transparent" ftp behaviour? And, in this case, what
should I do?

Thenk you for leaning on this question.

need. If you know of any program that will allow me to input data into a

init 3 is almost right.

At the lilo prompt you can type

linux 3

that will get you to a text mode console without going into X.
From inside X, you can do ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a console, and alt-f7 to
go back to X. Inside X you can also ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the
x-server and fall back to a console.

I bought a former 'special of the month', the cdr-4012 and it
works just fine, both in win98 with the supplied software and
in Linux Mandrake 7.0 using the x-cd-roast software (works in
KDE) that came with Linux Mandrake 7.0.

My cdr-4012 came with an included adaptec 1505 scsi card (not
directly supported in Linux), but since I already had scsi
peripherals on my system I just plugged the CD-R into my
current scsi bus and away I went. They also have ide's, check

Hi,

I have been having difficulty configuring realplayer 7 with my system. I
have no sound with realplayer only a indicator showing that it is playing. I
setup realplayer 7 as root user and configured it to work with netscape
which worked although sound quality was poor. I wanted to use it as another
user so that I didn't have to login as root. I gave permission to myself as
a user for the realplay and for esd to try to make it work as another user.
It did work for a time last night, but the system crashed a while later
where I had to turn the power off to get any control over the system. I used
lothar and my sound card is configured as Yamaha 030 which works although
the sound quality is not great! I also checked the CD player kscd 1.2.7
which has perfect sound! My question what do I need to check to make
realplayer work??? What was likely to have been messed up???

The same thing happened to me. Another way to get around this is to go into
preference/navigator/applications and make an adjustment to one of the file
types already setup as "save to disk" such that the extension of the file
you are downloading will be recognized. Properly, a new application type
should be setup, but then you need to know the MIMEType for the file. The
workaround suffices. Then, when you click on the icon, you will be prompted
with the save dialog box.

[newbie] New kernel on the boot floppy

2000-06-06 Per discussione Bryan Kim

Hi.

I have a few questions...

1. I am an experienced Debian user trying out
mandrake. I have a motherboard with promise 66 off board controller. That
controller/mobo combination requires a custom kernel that's been correctly
patched in order to work. With Debian, I simply use the custom kernel
replacement utility that comes with Debian's boot floppy set to make sure that
my custom kernel replaces the Debian stock kernel. That kernel replacer ensures
that everything still works on the boot floppy set. How do I replace the kernel
on the mandrake floppy to make sure that everything works
correctly?

2. Also, Debian has a kernel building package that
creates a custom debian package with the hardware optimized kernel and the
correct modules. Installing this custom debian package lets all the other
packages that want to know about the kernel know all the correct compatibility
information. How do I create a custom kernel package with Redhat/Mandrake that
also updates all the other packages that want to know about the kernel?

We are very pleased to announce the immediate availability
of Linux-Mandrake 7.1 (Helium).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to build-on and refine the many innovations
first introduced in version 7.0 and adds many new

features certain to please both beginners and experts alike.

The Linux-Mandrake 7.1 GPL archive now spans one or two Cd-Roms to bring
you the best and most up-to-date applications

available.

The 7.1 highlights include: support for multiple Cd-Roms at installation
time, a new journalized filesystem, a highly tuned Apache web

server and a web-based configuration tool that allows remote configuration
of a Linux-Mandrake system through a network.

"Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is our latest offering which provides a complete and
powerful operating system ideal for most needs - from the

home user to the demands of an enterprise with high-performance servers,
and all at low cost. With the ergonomic improvements and

server solutions provided with this release, Linux-Mandrake 7.1 has a great
chance of becoming the new Linux standard for both

enterprise and home use." declared Jacques Le Marois, President of MandrakeSoft.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is now available for download from many locations throughout
the Internet. The boxed version, including

commercial applications, printed manuals and support will be available
in retail outlets at the end of June, 2000.

Here's a sampling of some of the most noteworthy benefits:

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 introduces a new menuing system. Applications now appear
in the same categories under all graphical

environments and update automatically as new packages are installed or
removed.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 offers the new Reiser journalized file system as an
option within the new DrakX graphical installer and

after installation with DiskDrake, the graphical hard drive partitioning
application.

A highly customized version of Webmin is included. Webmin uses the familiar
interface of a web browser to easily setup user

accounts, configure Apache, DNS, FTP, view system statistics and most other
system/server tasks. Webmin can be used

remotely from another PC and even from other operating systems simply by
using a web browser.

Apache 1.3.12 is enhanced with the latest high-performance offerings from
the "Accelerating Apache Project" and provides

out-of-the-box support for Php3, Perl and Ssl extensions.

Cutting-edge XFree 4.0 servers with new modular architecture is available
in the "Expert" installation class, XFree 3.3.3.1 is

standard for other classes.

The Grub user-friendly bootloader is now provided as default. Lilo is an
optional bootloader in an "Expert" install. Both Grub

and Lilo now overcome the 1024-limit.

Helix Code Gnome improvements are incorporated into the Linux-Mandrake
7.1 Gnome-Sawfish desktop environment.

DrakFont is our new open-source font manager for Linux-Mandrake 7.1. This
utility provides an easy and convenient way to

manage fonts on a Linux system. DrakFont can add, remove and even retrieve
Ms-Windows fonts (if located on the same

machine) and make these fonts available to Linux applications.

Kernel 2.2.15 with Linux-Mandrake extensions (secure kernel, supermount
option).

Ata 66 (Udma 66) is supported for users seeking the highest-performance

i810-based mainboards are now supported in Linux-Mandrake 7.1.

Enhanced USB support for modems, printers, Zip drives, keyboards and mice.

"Wheel" mice are fully functional within most applications (Netscape, Gnome,
Kde, many others).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to provide features that aren't available
in any other Linux

distributions such as Supermount (transparent access to removable media),
LSec (Linux security

Say you want to tar and zip up /www/ .. All you have to do is cd to /.
 Then, under linux run:
 tar -zcvf all_archive.tgz www

 z - gzip compression
 c - create archive
 v - verbose
 f - archive name

the '-' is optional, and is there for backwards compatablility. Simple as
that. If you are on a Unix system (Solaris) or have an older version of
 tar you can run:

 tar xvf all_archive.tar www
 gzip all_archive.tar

It will create a file called all_archive.tar.gz

You have DiskDrake. Run it as root. Be careful what you do. Look at the

make sure you got the right partition and be careful what you do. Reformat

My point exactly, that is having no knowledge of what your message might
have contained, but having a subject of "Administration Question" we opened
the thing and viewed a very nice "Thank You". I would suggest that
between just two lists, newbies and blt, upwards of 200 hundred

Or was it your intent to thank each and everyone of us that have

I wonder if existing users of Linux Mandrake 7.0 PowerPack that

Mark Potochnik wrote:

 http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/71feat.php3

We are very pleased to announce the immediate
 availability of Linux-Mandrake 7.1 (Helium).

  Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to build-on and
refine the many innovations first introduced in version 7.0 and adds
 many new
features certain to please both beginners and
 experts alike.

The Linux-Mandrake 7.1 GPL archive now spans one
or two Cd-Roms to bring you the best and most up-to-date applications
  available.

The 7.1 highlights include: support for multiple
Cd-Roms at installation time, a new journalized filesystem, a highly
 tuned Apache web
server and a web-based configuration tool that
allows remote configuration of a Linux-Mandrake system through a
 network.

"Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is our latest offering which
provides a complete and powerful operating system ideal for most needs
 - from the
home user to the demands of an enterprise with
high-performance servers, and all at low cost. With the ergonomic
 improvements and
server solutions provided with this release,
Linux-Mandrake 7.1 has a great chance of becoming the new Linux
 standard for both
enterprise and home use." declared Jacques Le
 Marois, President of MandrakeSoft.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is now available for download
from many locations throughout the Internet. The boxed version,
 including
  commercial applications, printed manuals and
support will be available in retail outlets at the end of June, 2000.

Here's a sampling of some of the most noteworthy
 benefits:

   Linux-Mandrake 7.1 introduces a new menuing
system. Applications now appear in the same categories under all
 graphical
environments and update automatically as new
 packages are installed or removed.
Linux-Mandrake 7.1 offers the new Reiser
journalized file system as an option within the new DrakX graphical
 installer and
   after installation with DiskDrake, the
 graphical hard drive partitioning application.
A highly customized version of Webmin is
included. Webmin uses the familiar interface of a web browser to
 easily setup user
accounts, configure Apache, DNS, FTP, view
system statistics and most other system/server tasks. Webmin can be
 used
remotely from another PC and even from other
operating systems simply by using a web browser.
Apache 1.3.12 is enhanced with the latest
high-performance offerings from the "Accelerating Apache Project" and
 provides
out-of-the-box support for Php3, Perl and
 Ssl extensions.
Cutting-edge XFree 4.0 servers with new
modular architecture is available in the "Expert" installation class,
 XFree 3.3.3.1 is
   standard for other classes.
The Grub user-friendly bootloader is now
provided as default. Lilo is an optional bootloader in an "Expert"
 install. Both Grub
and Lilo now overcome the 1024-limit.
   Helix Code Gnome improvements are
 incorporated into the Linux-Mandrake 7.1 Gnome-Sawfish desktop
 environment.
DrakFont is our new open-source font manager
for Linux-Mandrake 7.1. This utility provides an easy and convenient
 way to
manage fonts on a Linux system. DrakFont can
add, remove and even retrieve Ms-Windows fonts (if located on the same

machine) and make these fonts available to
 Linux applications.
   Kernel 2.2.15 with Linux-Mandrake extensions
 (secure kernel, supermount option).
Ata 66 (Udma 66) is supported for users
seeking the highest-performance from Ide hard drives.
i810-based mainboards are now supported in
 Linux-Mandrake 7.1.
Enhanced USB support for modems, printers,
 Zip drives, keyboards and mice.
"Wheel" mice are fully functional within
most applications (Netscape, Gnome, Kde, many others).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to provide features
that aren't available in any other Linux

We are very pleased to announce the immediate
  availability of Linux-Mandrake 7.1 (Helium).

   Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to build-on and
refine the many innovations first introduced in version 7.0 and adds
  many new
features certain to please both beginners and
  experts alike.

The Linux-Mandrake 7.1 GPL archive now spans one
or two Cd-Roms to bring you the best and most up-to-date applications
   available.

The 7.1 highlights include: support for multiple
Cd-Roms at installation time, a new journalized filesystem, a highly
  tuned Apache web
server and a web-based configuration tool that
allows remote configuration of a Linux-Mandrake system through a
  network.

"Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is our latest offering which
provides a complete and powerful operating system ideal for most needs
  - from the
home user to the demands of an enterprise with
high-performance servers, and all at low cost. With the ergonomic
  improvements and
server solutions provided with this release,
Linux-Mandrake 7.1 has a great chance of becoming the new Linux
  standard for both
enterprise and home use." declared Jacques Le
  Marois, President of MandrakeSoft.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is now available for download
from many locations throughout the Internet. The boxed version,
  including
   commercial applications, printed manuals and
support will be available in retail outlets at the end of June, 2000.

Here's a sampling of some of the most noteworthy
  benefits:

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 introduces a new menuing
system. Applications now appear in the same categories under all
  graphical
environments and update automatically as new
  packages are installed or removed.
Linux-Mandrake 7.1 offers the new Reiser
journalized file system as an option within the new DrakX graphical
  installer and
after installation with DiskDrake, the
  graphical hard drive partitioning application.
A highly customized version of Webmin is
included. Webmin uses the familiar interface of a web browser to
  easily setup user
accounts, configure Apache, DNS, FTP, view
system statistics and most other system/server tasks. Webmin can be
  used
remotely from another PC and even from other
operating systems simply by using a web browser.
Apache 1.3.12 is enhanced with the latest
high-performance offerings from the "Accelerating Apache Project" and
  provides
out-of-the-box support for Php3, Perl and
  Ssl extensions.
Cutting-edge XFree 4.0 servers with new
modular architecture is available in the "Expert" installation class,
  XFree 3.3.3.1 is
standard for other classes.
The Grub user-friendly bootloader is now
provided as default. Lilo is an optional bootloader in an "Expert"
  install. Both Grub
and Lilo now overcome the 1024-limit.
Helix Code Gnome improvements are
  incorporated into the Linux-Mandrake 7.1 Gnome-Sawfish desktop
  environment.
DrakFont is our new open-source font manager
for Linux-Mandrake 7.1. This utility provides an easy and convenient
  way to
manage fonts on a Linux system. DrakFont can
add, remove and even retrieve Ms-Windows fonts (if located on the same

machine) and make these fonts available to
  Linux applications.
Kernel 2.2.15 with Linux-Mandrake extensions
  (secure kernel, supermount option).
Ata 66 (Udma 66) is supported for users
seeking the highest-performance from Ide hard drives.
i810-based mainboards are now supported in
  Linux-Mandrake 7.1.
Enhanced USB support for modems, printers,
  Zip drives, keyboards and mice.
"Wheel" mice are fully functional within
most applications (Netscape, Gnome, Kde, many others).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to provide features

   distributions such as

You know, I see a lot of this (and I am as guilty as the next newbie), you
feel as if you have a less than perfect install and you want all to be nice by
re-installing. I understand the feeling, but really, re-installing seems to be
the first choice instead of the last. If you have Linux up and running, you
have Linux up and running. Most anything can be fixed on a running system. A
little reading, a little editing, maybe uninstalling and re-installing a
package or two and you are back to normal and smarter for it all. I have been
in what seemed to hopeless, desperate situations before on my system, and have
bounced backand nothing compares to the feeling of accomplisment that comes
from doing it yourself. Your gonna get your hands dirty w/Linux, but your
pride will shine. Tom (do I sound like a dad or what!)

you can use the installation CD to format the partitions:
-expert mode
-any class but server
format the partitions, click done, then exit the install.
OR
if you have a DOS disk then type fdisk, delete the partitions (non dos)
and then exit fdisk.
The problem with using DOS is that although it sees the linux partitions
(non-dos)
it is rarely able to delete the partitions , that 's why I suggested the first
option.
OR
if you have Partition Magic then you can just delete and format the
partitions.

The easiest way to connect with a modem is to use kppp. It is in the KDE

What do you expect from upgrade?

One topic from a dark side .-)

Upgrading a Linux-Mandrake system has been our nightmare for quite some
time. François has worked a lot on this for 7.1, and at the end I was
actually able to upgrade from RH 6.0 system, and end up with a fully
functional Mandrake 7.1 system. Rpm database got quite "poluted", and we
ahve to do some dirty hacks for Qt, but at least one gets a working
system, which is a good start.

Big question is: What should an upgrade actually do?

Below are some answers I could think of:

 1) CONSERVATIVE: just freshen those packages which can be freshened and
leave the rest of the system as it is

 2) FORCED: Force instalation of a new "core" system, even if this
means downgroading, or breaks some functionality of the already installed
system, then go on with freshening the rest of the packages.

 3) REPAIR: Like conservative, but try to repair existing packages too,
If we find out that some of the files are missing, or that someone fooled
with binaries, reinstall the package (even if it means downgrading!)

 4) FORCED REPAIR: like 3, but make sure that "core" system is installed in
 the end, like in 2

 5) VANDAL: force install of the core, and upgrade of those packages we
provide. The rest can go to hell. ;-

I like this one; as long as the new kernel-you know , the one with USB support
and more- is automatically installed over the 2.14-15 one... and each of the
awesome updates aren't broken whan they install...and nothing I have done to
the rest of my 7.02 system gets messed up without asking me...
--
6)SUPER-VANDAL: like 5, but i make sure that all packages older than one year
are removed from the system. (ups, I just found another variable for sorting
packages!) ...

All of the above mentioned can (must) also be combined with possibility to
add new non-core packages during upgrade, and maybe even to remove some of
the currently installed packages in "custom" and "expert" mode.

I am quite sure there are other ways to do upgrade, and that opinions on
"what is the best upgrade" will be wildly different. So, what do you
 think?
