Ciao a tutti
/urs/bin/cdrecord:operation not permitted WARNING cannot do
mlockall(2)
/urs/bin/cdrecord:operation not pernitted WARNING cannot
set RR-scheduler
/urs/bin/cdrecord:Permission denied WARNING cannot set

Qualche idea ?

[newbie-it] problemi con i lettori CD

2001-11-04 Per discussione Dimitri

Salve.
I CD
Dati me li legge soltanto il DVD, mentre i CD Audio non me li legge

TNT2 MODEL 64 (english), schermo PHILIPS Brilliance 109P, HardDisk
IBM-DPTA-372050, lettore DVD HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-2500, masterizzatore
SONY CD-RW CRX140E, floppy GENERIC NEC FLOPPY DISK, tastiera standard
101/102, mouse PS/2 scroll, modem U.S. ROBOTICS 56K FAX EXT
- come Desktop.

a file:/mnt/cdrom.

a file:/mnt/cdrom.
accedere a file:/mnt/cdrom2.
hdb: command error: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hdb: command error: error=0x54
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=03:40, iso_blknum=16, block=32

Ringrazio,

Dimitri

Hello,
LILO can be placed in the Windows 2000 Boot menu! Using instructions at
www.ntcompatible.com/faq2.shtml, (not reproduced here - they are designed
with SuSE linux in mind which would not be appropraite on this list!), you
can add it - and takes only 512bytes.

[at a terminal] lilo -s /mnt/c/linux.bin

[in boot.ini add this line] C:\LINUX.BIN=Mandrake Linux 8.0

I have tried it with linux mandrake 8.0 and it works perfectly.

Hope it's useful,

It works and you know it...

If it doesn't work then remake it. I've tried it and it works perfectly on a
Pentium II 350...
And don't forget I happen to be an Internet Security expert (just ask
civileme) who can read iptables even in Chinese...

I is very good as it is now possible to access my primary operating system
(Win '98) in one step rather than two. How things suddenly stuff up next

[newbie] Problem compiling new kernel 2.4.13 with mandrake 8.1

2001-11-04 Per discussione Irwan Hadi

I bought a mandrake 8.1 standard edition in wal-mart a few days ago, and
install it on my computer (AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz, 1.1 GB ram, with motherboard
A7A266.

When I'm finished compiled the kernel, and copy it to /boot, both the
System.map, bzImage, and also edit /etc/lilo.conf the map from map to
System.map, I got problem, that is I couldn't ping to the network at all.

When I did /sbin/ifconfig eth0, I could see my network card (3com 905c) is
there, which means the problem must not be from the network card.
When I used the kernel packed by Mandrake I can access the network without any
problem. The problem just comes if I use the kernel I rebuild by myself.

I already tried to optimize the kernel for athlon based processor, amd K6, and
i386, but all just failed.

Does anyone can help me to solve this problem ?
Thanks

[newbie] problem with make

2001-11-04 Per discussione Scotchpie

Hi all,

Although being a sole Linux user about a year ago now I had to move back to
windoze for work reasons and how quickly we forget. Anyway back now how it
has all improved WOW!!!

I have a small problem though. I installed last week Mandrake 7.1 and
upgraded to 8.0 with a free disk on Linux Format magazine I had knocking
around. However when I want to install any tar.gz file I get problems when
doing a make.

As an example I am trying to install KOffice 1.1 but when doing a make I get
that it cannot find the command g++. I did a whereis and found that G++ is
installed and the executable is in /usr/bin so why can it not find it?

I have had this problem also with other programs I try to install some say it
is with cc others with gcc yet they all reside in /usr/bin.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks and it's nice to be back.

Did the user's execute bit fall over in all /usr/bin? Can you run that
 stuff as root?

All of the executables in /usr/bin do run when typing in the command,
eg: $ mozilla, and up pops the browser. The only problems seem to be with
these applications mentioned before which interestingly have a flashing red
background.
Even as root I get the same message as I do as a user:

Search the cooker mailing list archive for discussion of 'libpng'.
Yes certain new apps or upgrades depend on it (eg, mozilla 9.5), but
installing libpng3 will break all the other (many) current apps that
depend on libpng2. The work-around seems to be to uninstall libpng2,
install libpng3, and create some s-links. Cooker is currently
updating those 'legacy' libpng2 apps to libpng3. So, you've either
got a lot of homework to do, or do without the latest ;)

Caution: this appraisal is about a week or two old, so everything
might'a changed by now ;) If you still just got'a have libpng3, it's
on the cooker mirrors

If you use Mandrake's kernel you won't have to do any compiling and when it's
installed properly it leaves your old kernel intact.

You can find the latest kernel in Mandrake Cooker. Download it and su to
root, then type:

rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.13-2mdk.rpm

or whatever version they're up to now. Remember, because it's from Cooker
there are no gurantees about how well it works, but if you install with the
same command above, your old kernel will still be intact if you need to fall
back.

1. Sign up for a website name at register.com
2. Sign up for a free account at dns2.go.com
3. Download and install the dns2go client for Linux
3. Edit your dns servers at register.com and put in the dns server names you
get from dns2go.com
4. Setup your website. If port 80 is blocked then use 8080
6. Run the exectuable dns2go client
7. Done.

What will happen is when someone types in your URL it goes to the dns2go
servers. They redirect the web request to your IP address on port 8080 or
port 80 if your isp isnt blocking that port. The dns2go client that you run
at boot up sends your ip address to the server so that it will know to
redirect the web request to your ip address.

Oh, sorry, didn't read that properly, didn't realise it wasn't a static IP
address.

If thats the case, either ask your IP for a static address. which will very
likely cost you money (although the cheapest ADSL supplier around here
offers only static IP address.. )

or use one of the solution that Texstar or the other guys suggested..

Fortunately, this is not entirely true :-)
There are plenty of services available on the internet to help out in this
kind of situation.
For example: http://www.dyndns.org and www.dhs.org
They will provide you with a URL for your website (for free!), which points
to your

There are also plenty of tools available that can be used to automatically
update your

[newbie] 'Lost' Win95 FAT32 partition

Dear all,

I am new to Linux and installed ML the first time. I do it on a 40G hard
disk with 20G divided into two Win95 FAT32 partitions with Windows Me
installed. After installation of ML 8.1, I cannot access the second Windows
partition from Windows. However, I can have access to its content under
Linux. Windows fdisk reported that this pratition is non-DOS while Linux
fdisk reported an id of 1b 'Hidden Win95 FAT32'. I manage to change the id
to b 'Win95 FAT32'. However, I still cannot see it under Windows. When I
check again in Linux, it changed back to 1b automatically.

Can anyone help, please!!

2001-11-04 Per discussione David E. Fox

I like the ogg vorbis media format but is there a way to convert the ogg
files to a format read by a normal cd player(car stereo)?

Well, you have to decompress the .ogg back to .wav format first, then burn
the .wav's to CD, unless of course your car stereo can read .mp3s or
.oggs. I don't know of any commercially-available players (ie stand-alone
oens) that recognize .ogg, and from your post, it seems it's a regular
CD player in your car.

If your xmms is built to recognize and play oggs, then you could use the
diskwriter option to decompress the ogg back to .wav.

MS OS's can boot, and it is normal that stupidity confuses lilo...

Re: [newbie] Problems with KDevelop 1.3 installation

2001-11-04 Per discussione Branislav Karic

I can't find qt-devel for Mandrake anywhere. Every link I get from search
engines for qt-devel -1.44-20mdk.rpm is deadend, looks like file does not
exist anymore :-(

I only managed to find qt-devel-1.44-20mdk.rdf but I don't know what to do
with it.

Anyone have an idea where to find qt-devel for Mandrake?

Thx.

Cheers Paul, no I cannot run g++ nor any of the others.

Where does g++ point to? What are the permissions?

e.g.

[paul@tbird paul]$ ls -l /usr/bin/g++
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root   21 Jun 18 14:01 /usr/bin/g++ -
/etc/alternatives/g++*

Did the user's execute bit fall over in all /usr/bin? Can you run that stuff
as root?

Well, is it also parallel port or is it something else (like USB)?

Well there could be any number of reasons but heres a few ideas to check out.

 hi all,
i am trying to set up ssh and nfs.
 i have 3 boxes:
1 gateway, diskless machine running floppyfw
1 p120 in the living room running lm8.1
 1 celeron2 1.1ghz in my studio(sounds a bit pretencious?) running lm8.1
the 2 machine are on the network and connect to the net

i can ping the p120 from the celeron, but not the other way round. would it
 be bastille's fault?

Sure could. Try stopping iptables/ipchains/Bastille
If portsentry is running try stopping it

i can see shared directories from the celeron box, but (obviously) not the
other way round. how can i make the celeron box visible on the network?

Are nfs and nfslock are running on both machines?
Do you have port mapper running on both machines?

Is your fstab defined correctly? Here is what mine looks like

VAIO:/home/derek /mnt/derekvaio nfs
intr,soft,user,noauto,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 0 0

Are your hosts in the hosts tables?
Are your hosts in your hosts.allow table? Are they excluded by the hosts.deny
table?
Are you using DHCP or static addressing? Static is probably easier to work
with.

sorry this isa dumb question, but i am stuck...

All of the executables in /usr/bin do run when typing in the command,

Even as root I get the same message as I do as a user:
 bash: g++: command not found

Andrew,

Since no one has responded so far, I'll offer a hint (because that's all
I can do) -- the flashing red background indicates a problem, and I
think it means that what you are looking at is a link, and the link is
broken somewhere, somehow. Maybe you can attempt to track down the
link.

Try doing an ls -al on the link, and then backtrace to the destination.

(To confirm the flashing red link for myself, I created a link to a
non-existent directory by typing ln -s nonexisting, and then did an ls
-al in the directory from where I issued the ln -s command.)

Good luck,
Randy Kramer

Re: [newbie] Installations under root

2001-11-04 Per discussione Michael D. Viron

Yes, all programs, unless permissions specifically prohibit it, can be used
by any user on the system. For audio with a user, make sure that the user
is a part of the 'audio' group in /etc/group -- if not, then add the
account to the audio group, otherwise the non-root user will not be able to
use the audio device.

[newbie] phpmcrypt on M 8.0

2001-11-04 Per discussione Scott

I have php, mysql apache working on Mandrake 8.0. They are the installed
from the rpms that came with the distro. I want to use mcrypt to encrypt
data before it is stored in mysql. Php was configured without the
--with-mcrypt option. I have installed the 2.5.7-1 mdk rpm of mcrypt. What
do I have to do to get this to work with php?

Thanks,
SW
