[newbie-it] problemi con i lettori CD
Salve. [newbie] Problem compiling new kernel 2.4.13 with mandrake 8.1
I bought a mandrake 8.1 standard edition in wal-mart a few days ago, and install it on my computer (AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz, 1.1 GB ram, with motherboard A7A266. When I'm finished compiled the kernel, and copy it to /boot, both the System.map, bzImage, and also edit /etc/lilo.conf the map from map to System.map, I got problem, that is I couldn't ping to the network at all. When I did /sbin/ifconfig eth0, I could see my network card (3com 905c) is there, which means the problem must not be from the network card. When I used the kernel packed by Mandrake I can access the network without any problem. The problem just comes if I use the kernel I rebuild by myself. I already tried to optimize the kernel for athlon based processor, amd K6, and i386, but all just failed. Does anyone can help me to solve this problem ? [newbie] problem with make
Hi all, Although being a sole Linux user about a year ago now I had to move back to windoze for work reasons and how quickly we forget. Anyway back now how it has all improved WOW!!! I have a small problem though. I installed last week Mandrake 7.1 and upgraded to 8.0 with a free disk on Linux Format magazine I had knocking around. However when I want to install any tar.gz file I get problems when doing a make. As an example I am trying to install KOffice 1.1 but when doing a make I get that it cannot find the command g++. I did a whereis and found that G++ is installed and the executable is in /usr/bin so why can it not find it? I have had this problem also with other programs I try to install some say it is with cc others with gcc yet they all reside in /usr/bin. Any advice will be appreciated. Did the user's execute bit fall over in all /usr/bin? Can you run that stuff as root? All of the executables in /usr/bin do run when typing in the command, eg: $ mozilla, and up pops the browser. Re: [newbie] Postfix mail server question.
At 08:34 AM 11/04/2001 -0800, you wrote: Hi, I have a Domain and a static IP. I also so setup my Web server runs behind a router which support NAT function. I open port 80 for WEB and I think I have to open 2 more ports which are #25 and #110 for mail server, is that right? No, you actually only need to open port 25, unless you plan to access your e-mail via pop3 from outside your local network. How can I setup Postfix to listen those 2 ports (for sending and receiving mails)? Postfix only needs port 25 (which is SMTP) -- port 110 is pop3, which is a totally separate piece of software and a different protocol. Postfix is a 'mail transport agent' (MTA), and handles transporting e-mail from the source address to the destination address. If I setup an account on Postfix, i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] , do I have to add user name ME on my server computer? user name ME has to either be added as a normal user or must be an alias in /etc/postfix/aliases . To use client mail program like Outlook to send and receive mail via my mail server, what do I need to setup on Postfix and what program I need run at startup (i.e. POP3 IMAP.!!??). For postfix, you need to configure it to allow access from whatever client machine you are using so that you can send e-mail through it from your mail user agent (MUA) such as Outlook, Eudora, etc. As for receiving e-mail, you don't have to do anything. To have a fully functional mail server, you need to be running postfix (or sendmail) and either imap or pop3 or both. Do I need to tell Postfix which ports to listen to or by default it will listen on ports #25 and #110? No -- by default Postfix listens only to port 25 (SMTP) -- it doesn't listen to port 110, which is a totally different protocol (which is handled by a different piece of software. I have been told that my ADSL connection will be a dynamically assigned IP so what problems/solutions will i encounter? As long as you are using dhcp you will not be able to host a website! The URL you choose must resolve to a static IP address. Check your Terms and Conditions, your ADSL provider may not allow you to host a website at all (them using dhcp is a pretty good hint that they do not...!) Richie Thanks Richie for the reply. My isp gives me a little webspace, but not enough for our needs. I could let them host the website domain name with a redirect to here tho? The user would probably not even see the redirect happening unless they have a terrible connection speed. I could use a script at this end to update the redirect script with the IP assigned to me and a mask on the url to still show the user our domain name when they get here.. What I need to know then is whether linux box has enough security features built in to mandrake 8.0 to run a website with SSL and cgi scripts if needed? 1. Sign up for a website name at register.com 2. Sign up for a free account at dns2.go.com 3. Download and install the dns2go client for Linux 3. Edit your dns servers at register.com and put in the dns server names you get from dns2go.com 4. Setup your website. If port 80 is blocked then use 8080 6. Run the exectuable dns2go client 7. Done. What will happen is when someone types in your URL it goes to the dns2go servers. They redirect the web request to your IP address on port 8080 or port 80 if your isp isnt blocking that port. The dns2go client that you run at boot up sends your ip address to the server so that it will know to redirect the web request to your ip address. Yes, Mandrake has some excellent security features that make it quiet easy to do.. I have been using 7.2 on many servers as mail, web and dns servers with never a problem. your hardware is fine, and I have run websites from much slower systems. your method of doing things is rather strange. why use Me as the gateway? The way I would do it, is to make a gateway linux box. put a firewall on it with everything you don't need open closed. Setup NAT (internet sharing) so that all machines can access the web. Then use port forwarding to forward port 80 from the gateway machine, to port 80 of your internal IP web server.. I have done that, we have servers using SSL, scripts, java and other stuff all on different ports and all using port forwarding.. it works great, and its nice and secure.. (doesn't hurt that it makes the network hard to figure out when you are on the outside of it either, (ie a script kiddie.) you can use ipmasqadm or IPTABLES to do your forwarding, I have always used ipmasqadm, but I am about to try it with IPTABLES,,, dunno how I will go yet. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of magnet Sent: Monday, 5 November 2001 1:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] How do I host a website? My isp gives me a little webspace, but not enough for our needs. I could let them host the website domain name with a redirect to here tho? The user would probably not even see the redirect happening unless they have a terrible connection speed. I could use a script at this end to update the redirect script with the IP assigned to me and a mask on the url to still show the user our domain name when they get here.. What I need to know then is whether linux box has enough security features built in to mandrake 8.0 to run a website with SSL and cgi scripts if needed? Oh, sorry, didn't read that properly, didn't realise it wasn't a static IP address. [newbie] 'Lost' Win95 FAT32 partition
Dear all, I am new to Linux and installed ML the first time. I do it on a 40G hard disk with 20G divided into two Win95 FAT32 partitions with Windows Me installed. After installation of ML 8.1, I cannot access the second Windows partition from Windows. However, I can have access to its content under Linux. Windows fdisk reported that this pratition is non-DOS while Linux fdisk reported an id of 1b 'Hidden Win95 FAT32'. I manage to change the id to b 'Win95 FAT32'. However, I still cannot see it under Windows. When I check again in Linux, it changed back to 1b automatically. Can anyone help, please!! If all your linux box's are sharing the internet connection from the ME laptops connection, then its not the linux machines that are using NAT, its the ME laptop,, (M$ just call it internet sharing) your linux box's only need to point to that machine for their gateways and off they will go.. you don't need iptables or anything else for that.. if you make a linux box the gateway, then you will have to use NAT to share it.. rgds Frank They were all set up when I configed the boxs using the external miggy modem during their initial install of mandrake 8.0. Re: [newbie] ogg to cd format?
I like the ogg vorbis media format but is there a way to convert the ogg files to a format read by a normal cd player(car stereo)? Well, you have to decompress the .ogg back to .wav format first, then burn the .wav's to CD, unless of course your car stereo can read .mp3s or .oggs. I don't know of any commercially-available players (ie stand-alone oens) that recognize .ogg, and from your post, it seems it's a regular CD player in your car. If your xmms is built to recognize and play oggs, then you could use the diskwriter option to decompress the ogg back to .wav. David E. Yes, all programs, unless permissions specifically prohibit it, can be used by any user on the system.
