[newbie-it] OpenOffice
Ciao a tutti, ho fatto l'upgrade da MdK 8.2 alla 9. OpenOffice non mi funziona piu`. Lancio un qualsiasi programma (writer, calc, math, ecc) e mi compare il quadrato azzurro con la scritta openoffice al centro, rimane li per qualche secondo e poi sparisce. Sulla barra degli strumenti rimane la casellina con scritto openoffice e la clessidra ancora per qualche secondo ma poi sparisce anche quella. Stessa cosa se provo ad aprire un documento. A qualcuno viene in mente qualcosa? Ho gia` provato a disinstallarlo ed a reinstallarlo ma niente e` cambiato. Grazie per qualsiasi suggerimento, -- Ciao, Lux Linux User # 266688

Mi sento talmente frustrato ed insicuro con Linux che non ci faccio ancora niente. Non so quando arriverò a decidermi a migrare completamente l'attività internet su Linux. Un giorno lo farò, ma è storia futura. Ti senti frustrato perchè non ci hai ancora provato seriamente. Ci sono passato anche io, ti capisco... ma ti assicuro che superato il comprensibilissimo scoglio iniziale non guarderai più indietro. Io ormai Windows lo uso solo quando è strettamente necessario (per giocare ad Operation Flashpoint!) e ancora mi chiedo come ho fatto ad usare per tutti questi anno quel catorcio di sistema operativo che si pianta una volta si e due pure e che ti costringe a diffidare di ogni messaggio email che ricevi con LookOut Express. Il trucco è VOLERE abbandonare Windows per Linux. Appena hai deciso che vuoi realmente farlo, buttatici dentro. Ti assicuro che è meno difficile di quello che sembra. Poi la Mandrake è così facile da usare che è la distribuzione ideale per chi inizia - è così intuitiva ed user-friendly che praticamente potresti usarla senza neanche dover conoscere un solo comando shell il che è un bene per chi si avvicina a Linux da Windows, perchè può farlo in maniera indolore, ma non deve diventare un'abitudine altrimenti si finisce per usare Linux come se Shumacher corresse sempre i Gran Premi in 1a marcia!! Il consiglio che ti do è di iniziare ad elencare i compiti che svolgi quotidianamente con Windows e pensare se percaso puoi farli altrettanto bene con Linux. Ti sorprenderai del fatto che nel 90% dei casi la risposta è sì. Inizia con Internet. Per configurare la connessione (telefonica o ADSL) con i Wizard di Mandrake Control Center ci vogliono 5 minuti. Altrettanti per configurare Kmail ad inviare e ricevere posta. Kmail è un client di posta che non ha nulla e sottolineo nulla da invidiare a Outlook, anzi ha una flessibilità e delle caratteristiche che lo rendono superiore ad Outlook, oltre che molto, molto più sicuro... Per navigare Mozilla va più che bene (basta che ti scarichi i plugin per Flash, RealAudio e la Java Virtual Machine - peccato solo che non ci sia ancora QuickTime). ciao ragazzi. è da 2 giorni che ho installato linux,.e gia vi assillo con migliaia di domande... perdonatemi! voglio chiedervi se sapete indicarmi dei programmi che girano chiaramente sotto linux che servono per disegni elettronici, se prendiamo ad esempio si possono citare Protel, Orcad, Innoveda, Verybest...tutti pero girano sotto winzozz. esistono anche per linux? se si potete darmi info? grazie By Luca.

Inizia controllando che versione del kernel hai installata; da vero hacker, vai in console e digita uname -a e leggi l'output; quindi digita man uname per capire che comando hai dato. A questo punto controlla sul sito che ti avevo consigliato l'altra volta se esiste un pacchetto rpm costruito per il kernel sulla tua macchina; e con questo per quanto riguarda il kernel dovresti essere a posto. Per quanto riguarda la natura del tuo modem (HCF o HSF), mi ricordo che nel sito della conexant si poteva scaricare un programmino di poche decine di Kb, installabile su win, che in quattroequattrotto ti permetteva di individuare il modello del tuo modem; raccolte tutte queste informazioni non dovresti avere più molti problemi con l'installazione. Ultimo consiglio: leggere attentamente la documentazione allegata nel pacchetto rpm: ti impedirà di affogare nel classico bicchiere d'acqua, e ti darà un'idea di che cosa possa essere un sistema operativo sul quale hai il pieno controllo... Ho risolto, non ho capito come ma vi spiego. Leggendo il file help per l'installazione (da www.openoffice.org) mi è venuto in mente che durante l'installazione MDK avrebbe potuto averlo installato in modo rete. Ho provato a lanciarlo da root ed infatti funzionava. Allora ho provato a dare da $ /usr/lib/openoffice/ ./setup per lanciare l'installazione workstation,ma nella finestra di openoffice mi dava solo la possibilità di riparare o di disinstallare tutto. Ho scelto di riparare. Non funzionava ancora. Ho riprovato ma questa volta ho scelto di disinstallare. Non funzionava più niente! Ho riavviato e in chiusura mi ha dato un sacco di fallito. Alla ripartenza era tutto OK. Mi logo col mio nome, parte il wizzard di configurazione di KDE. Do annulla. Provo a lanciare openoffice writer e funziona e mi importa la rubbrica degli indirizzi di mozilla ma non funziona più mozilla (ne mail ne web). Chiudo openoffice provo a lanciare mozilla e funziona. Salve a tutti, ho un problema con un cd rom musicale. Ha delle tracce cda e niente altro. Il problema è che se accedo con un lettore musicale, per es. xmms, legge le tracce regolarmente. Ma se cerco di montarlo per leggerne il conenuto mi da il seguente errore: mount: tipo fs errato, opzione non valida, superblocco su /dev/cdrom danneggiato, o troppi file system montati Grazie a tutti per l'eventuali aiuto.

ciao a tutti. ho installato firestarter (0.8.2) su e da mdk 8.2download. uso internet per semplice navigazione e posta domestica, connesso via modem. non mi è chiaro quali porte devo lasciare aperte e per chi. se attivo il firewall e non indico nessuna regola non mi connetto a nessun sito nè scarico posta e questo può essere logico. invece, se accedo ad un sito qualunque con firewall disattivato e poi riattivo il firewall funzionano sia navigazione che posta, non capisco la differenza e questo non mi sembra logico. dal poco che ho capito dovrebbe bastarmi impostare poche regole dinamiche nella finestra open service to machine. posso anche farlo su base empirica: -provo a connettermi -abilito la prima porta per il primo indirizzo listato sui firewall hit -idem per la posta -se funziona non tocco più niente -se alla volta successiva non funziona abilito altra porta per altro indirizzo però questo sistema sembra rozzo anche a me che sono un gorilla. qualcuno può darmi lumi o indicarmi dove trovare semplici informazioni sul significato delle varie porte? in particolare, ricevo continui accessi sulla porta 137 servizio netbios-ns, che significa? grazie fin d'ora per le noccioline. ciao. paolo brusasco.

I cd-audio non si possono montare in quanto non hanno un fs. Al limite, per poter vedere il contenuto puoi utilizzare (se utilizzi kde) Konqueror. Sulla barra verticale (a sinistra) c'è un'icona che se ci fai passare sopra il mouse ti mostra l'etichetta servizi. Dopo aver inserito il cd nel lettore fai un click sopra tale icona e ti mostrerà il conetenuto del cd, non solo, puoi fare anche altre cose 8tipo ascoltare i vari brani, copiarteli sul yuo hd in formato wav, ecc. Ricordo un nome di 4 lettere. :-( ) non sono piu' stata in grado di montare una delle partizioni; con quale errore? C'era un kernel panic, non ricordo altro. ero in panico anch'io! arrivato a questo punto il processo d'avvio si inchiodava con un kernel panic (mi diceva che un non so cosa puntava a NULL). Non sono riuscita a sistemare le cose nemmeno partendo dall'altro Linux che ho installato, una Slack, nonostante con e2sfck le cose sembravano essersi messe a posto (ma la slack mi permetteva di lavorare solo in lettura). puoi entrare con un floppy o col cd della mandrake. Provato (col floppy), ma si inchiodava lo stesso. il problema del solo lettura probabilmente se ricordo bene lo risolvi con un chroot sulla partizione montata, che altrimenti, immagino per sicurezza, viene montata in read only. Veniva montata in read only :-( Oggi stessa storia, solo che (dopo aver doppiato i miei dati sul disco fisso di Giorgio :-) e aver modificato il fstab in modo che non caricasse la partizione incriminata, oltre ad aver lanciato un e2sfck pressoche' ovunque non capisco pero', tutto questo l'ha generato il kde? Suppongo... sinceramente non so neanche io cosa stia accadendo! se dai un fsck non va a buon fine? Adesso si', dopo aver manipolato i file system da Giorgio, martedi' sera no... finalmente MDK mi ha presentato la schermata del login: qualsiasi utente mettessi, pero', anziche' permettermi di lavorare mi ripresentava la schermata del login. ehm, a me il kdm (login grafico) della mdk dura ormai massimo tre giorni. E arriva sempre a farmi questo. Parto in init 3 e lancio startx. :-( Al prossimo crash che devo fare??? NON VOGLIO REINSTALLARE... Cerca di capire meglio che succede. Parti in console, fai un fsck, fai fare alla mandrake i suoi controlli, e spera che non si sia danneggiato il disco o il sistema operativo. Il disco non parrebbe, forse il sitema operativo... Una volta che a causa di continui reboot durante il caricamento anche il mio linux si trovava in una situazione simile, glielo reinstallai sopra, un finto upgrade insomma. Ti installera' probabilmente anche cose che non vuoi, ma dovrebbe aggiustare e non tocca le configurazioni. OK. Prima l'eliminazione della .kde, dopo questo... e speriamo bene! Grazie! -- Arwan

Ciao a tutti. ho scaricato i driver per il mio modem conexant dopo avere controllato che fosse un modem HSF e non HCF come mi avevate detto. io mi trovo un file in formato rpm se gli clicco sopra mi appare una scheramta apri con... ho provato a vagabondare per il menu ma senza esito...come faccio? qualcuno di voi mi ha detto di lanciarlo dalla riga di comandoma come si fa? scusate di nuovo la mia gnoranz! by grazie Luca

Ciao a tutti. girovagando per il sistema ho fatto la tristissima scoperta che la scheda audio non funziona :-[[[ ho lanciato un file *.mp3, mi si è aperto un programmino simile a winamp ma dalle casse usciva il nulla. guardando in configurazione\hardware\hardrake ho visto che la periferica pci che ha rilevato come scheda audio è una Ensoniq ... io ho una soundblaster 128. potete aiutarmi? grazie ciao a tutti luca!

Dipende anche da quali servizi lanci al boot. Li vedi col sys-V editor, che c'e' nel menu configuration -- boot and init. qualcuno può darmi lumi o indicarmi dove trovare semplici informazioni sul significato delle varie porte? Sono listate nell' /etc/services per vedere una particolare porta puoi usare il grep $ grep 137 /etc/services e cosi' via via web trovi sempre elenchi aggiornati o puoi usare il port search a www.snort.org in particolare, ricevo continui accessi sulla porta 137 servizio netbios-ns, che significa? dovrebbe essere la condivisione windows, samba direi. ma se non lo usi puoi disabilitarlo e chiudere la porta. Ciao a tutti. Ho visto che negli ultimi giorni si è parlato di standby e APM. Vorrei chiedere qualcosa anch'io: nel mio computer il bios ha una funzionalità APM che permette di spegnere lo schermo e il disco fisso dopo un tempo definito. Linux consente lo spegnimento dello schermo, ma il disco fisso continua a girare, a differenza da Uìndous dove dopo un po' si sente che anche il disco fisso si assopisce. C'è modo di abilitare quest'ultima impostazione con Linux? Mi sembrerebbe importante... Grazie anticipate Giorgio

salve, ho installato con successo mandrake v.8.1 (domani lo aggiornerò alla v.8.2),riesco a collegarmi a internet, ma non riesco a far funzionare nessuno dei browser web (es.mozilla). Mi spiego: il browser si avvia, ma dopo aver inserisco l'indirizzo viene visualizzato un errore che mi dice, pressappoco, che il sito non esiste o che l'indirizzo è sbagliato- ovviamente ciò non è vero-. Cosa posso fare per risolvere questo problema? Grazie.

Se dovessi sentire il suono ed ancora il tuo mp3 non ne vuole sapere di gracchiare con xmms vai nelle impostazioni di xmms e controlla il plugin di output anch eli facendo qualche prova. non mi sembra ci sia altro... nel caso ciaooo francesco

Hi all, I have installed a new HD as a pri mast on my pc and moved the old pri mast to sec slave. It was a dual boot mdk9 and w2k. I have created the same on my new disk, but I cant get it to boot from the new mbr without the boot disk. It tries to load from the old mbr. How do I get rid of the old mbr on the sec slave and use the mbr on the pri master? I am wanting to keep the old one in the machine for a few weeks for moving stuff across. Hey, Okay, it seems I need to answer my own question: I'm still a newbie at Linux, and so I had no idea *why* I couldn't get those halt/reboot/logout options to appear. Well, after playing around, just looking and looking all over in the menus, I ran across the Login Manager. Its kinda hidden in Dolphin's menus. In any case, in the Login Manager, I went to the Sessions tab. The very first setting is called Allow Shutdown and you have a subsetting for the Console and Remote. The setting for Console said Nobody; I simply changed it to Everybody. I logged out and logged back in, and then tried to log out again. To my delight, I now had the options to halt/reboot/logout. Success! I remember this setting in 8.2 in KDE, too, however as I currently don't want to install X I'd be glad if someone could tell me what to do from command line. I'll try Derek's suggestions (thanks) and make a search on my own. Have you ever had high security?, or did you upgrade instead of install? There are three RPMS to do with samba samba-common samba-client samba-server To share with Windows mahines you need samba-common and samba-server To mount remote shares on Win machine you need samba-client as well. Use software manager in Mandrake Conrrol Centre to install the RPMS. You are not finished then. [newbie] Problems with mouse MK 8.0
Hi yall, Just installed ML 8.0 on a Toshiba 1710CDT and everything went fine during the install detected everything and was able to complete the USB mouse test successfully. Go and StartX and nada. Mouse is a MS Optical Intellimouse and its dead.. Any hints on how to configure it? .. Ive now hooked this mouse up via the PS/2 adapter, and still no good the mouse is alive but no action on the screen. If I now want to swap it for a normal PS/2 mouse, how I configure that without having to completely reinstall? Yep, Im a REAL newbie.TIA, DaveA

Like the sims cd. Just to give you a blow by blow. I place the cd in and open it with the removable media link. It opens it fine and displays the contents of the cd. When I launch a shell to install the rpms I issue the urpmi *.rpms and I get no rpms found. I get the same if I just try to click the rpms. I have copied the entire cd to a drive via winblows and can install it from the shell with no problems. It doesn't seam to be limited to this single cd. As I have yet to get mkiso to make a iso file of any cd. Yet Mandrake's add software works fine for installing rpms on their cds. Any clues?? No... Supermount works just fine for me. You did 'cd /mnt/cdom' before trying to urpmi * I hope (urpmi *.rpms aint gonna work) In any case here is the ***Tip of the day for newbies*** In 9.0 clicking on an RPM within Konqueror causes Kpackage to open, and you can then install the RPM by highlighting it and clicking install etc. KPackage is very slow, and is 'over the top' if all you want is to install the RPM. If you open KDE ControlCentreFileBrowsingFileAssociations type 'rpm' inthe search box then look at the file association 'x-rpm' you will see Kpackage is the default application associated with RPMs. Select 'SoftwareInstaller' and move it up the list to the top. I'm a little confused because I thought CGI::* and CGI.pm were part of Perl's base release since 5.6 and this is 5.8. [newbie] Linux app for resizing PDFs
Is there a way to resize A4 PDF pages to U.S. Letter using what comes in a d/l 3-CD distro of MDK 9? I tried using KGhostView without success. I would like to keep the docs as PDFs, if possible, but would glady convert them to something else as long as they print out as they now look in PDF format. Currently, I am porting them over to a M$ machine that gives me access to AdobeDistiller to change the page sizes to fit my lazer printer. [newbie] PRIMARY MASTER HARD DISK FAIL
Need some help here! Yesterday I installed mandrake 8.2 on my oldie. P133 with 72mb RAM and a 10gb quantum fireball. When I finished the installation everything seemed to be right. The system was stable. Only when I had the kde up was a bit slow, something expected of cource. After about an hour the system went on stand by mode and the monitor turned off. When I moved the mouse to wake up the system the monitor turned on but the only think I saw was a stucked screenshot! My system was crashed. I did my best to recover it but the only way to move on was to push the power off button. When I tried to reboot I saw this f.. message: PRIMARY MASTER HARD DISK FAIL Due to my old BIOS the primary disk it seems to be only 8gb aprox. but during the 8.2 installation progress the disk was seemed to be 10gb (actual size) What happened? Not sure if you can resize with ghostscript. What I do know is that Acrobat 5.05 allows you to print to any size paper, and it will scale the image to fit the paper. Is that what you want? Dear All, I have setup my /etc/modules.conf as suggested for via onboard 8233 sound and still no sound for mp3, midi, most system sounds. Is there anything else I could check or do? Would I be better off to get the latest alsa source and compile myself? I do not want to go that far if it will not make a difference. I know this can work. I do not give up easily. It certainly worked in 8.2 except I had to do some interesting adjustments to make it work. This time those adjustments do not work in LM9. If I could get this sound to work it would not be a bad distro. I am having alot less problems with it than LM8.2 except for sound and usb.:( Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all of your suggestions everyone. I don't HAVE to reconstruct the PDFs, just get them to print out in the correct page format to satisfy my anal printer. ;-) It is not on the download CDs though :( Acrobat is available as an RPM from Mandrake Club, and is available somewhere on the Adobe download site. [newbie] blackbox config ques
Greetings, are there any blackbox users in the house? I've been experimenting with blackbox on my Mdk 9.0 a bit (0.62.1-3mdk), and I think it's pretty interesting. I also have bbconfg-1.8-2mdk installed too. I will have to do some reading up on bbconf to learn the in's and out's of it.(how to add entries to my menu primarily) However, what I would like to ask is how do I config my mouse settings, like acceleration and threshold? Alot of places are starting to sell woth out a OS installed Mike Mike: My understanding is that the MS agreement with large OEM's is that (1) the vendor pays a fee to MS based on every computer sold -- whether it has an OS installed or not (sometimes this is called the Microsoft tax, and (2) that the vendor agrees not to install any other OS on _any_ systems. The vendor has the choice between accepting this deal, or paying full price for Windows. Since the deal price is somewhere in the $40 range, there really isn't much of a choice. That's why Dell throws a copy of FreeDOS in the box -- technically, it isn't installed. Don't expect a price break, though -- Dell still has to give MS its share. I'm not sure how Wally World/Microtel get around this, but I expect that Microtel doesn't sell PC's with windows installed, and so they don't need any sort of deal with MS. Similarly, small system builders probably don't build enough PC's to qualify for MS's OEM pricing, so it really doesn't matter to them either. Or they're betting that MS won't audit them. IANAL, but MS' OEM pricing policies strike me as being very dangerous (or arrogant) behavior for a company that has just been convicted of monopolistic practices and is still awaiting final settlement.
