Re: [newbie] cd into file

Hi Rosemary,
Did you try doing a cd /home/rosemary/L then tab to finish it off. I know
that spaces are treated differently. Whenever I forget exact directory names
I just cd to the first letter and let the tab key finish it off. It will give
you all possible matches from that point forward.

Does Kpackage do this? I know it lists installed packages and gives summary
details about the rpm, but may not be what you are looking for.

Yes, there is a version for 10.1

It's called kdeadmin-kpackage, and you can urpmi it or install it from MCC.

Hi,
I have been trying to get this script working. Running the script on a small

It is about 30 or 40 lines. It can be found at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=130721package_id=143427

or I could include it in a posting.

I read through the script but I can't 'extract' any command line options that
I may be missing.

Thanks for any help you may offer...

Is there a way to implement this functionality without re-compiling the

Has anyone on the list managed to change the karamba.theme file so that it

For those unfamiliar with superkaramb, it is a beautiful transparent computer

themes available at kde-look.

[newbie] mounting webdav

Hi everyone,
I found that there is an opportunity to mount webdav directories locally in
MCC. All the options that I need to set are there. However, once all is set
and I click on 'mount' , the error message states

'mount: fs type davfs not supported by kernel'

I think the issue is that the webdav server that I am trying to connect to is
secure (ie: https)

Does anyone on this list know how to enable this?

[newbie] webdav

2004-12-30 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,

This is new to me. I have gone into MCC and there is a webdav entry under the
mount points tab. It says that davfs must be installed but when I click o.k.
to install an error message comes back saying 'mandatory package davfs is
missing'.
Where can I find the package? Is there a basic tutorial anywhere with
information on webdav?

[newbie] installing new versions - keeping settings etc

2004-12-27 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
Merry Christmas or happy holidays to all on the list.
A quick question that arose from my last installation. I would like to know
the best way to save emails, desktop settings etc. when installing new
versions.
When I installed 10.1 Official I tried to copy my Mail directory and
my .kdeshareappskmail directories thinking that they would restore all my
emails.
When I copied them over to /mnt/win_d (fat32 partition) there were some errors
about some files not copied.
There were no essential emails so I proceeded with the installation.
My kmail directory structure was saved but the actual emails were not.

What is the the recommended method of retaining emails? Also, is it advisable
to retain desktop settings considering that KDE (my choice) is constantly
being upgraded to new versioins?

Thanks,
Bill W.

[newbie] gimp plugins and gimptool

2004-12-27 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I have been experimenting with gimp (2.0) and I want to install the bump map
plugin. It is a file simply titled bumpmap.c
From my reading, there should be a utility called gimptool that compiles and
installs it automatically. My LM 10.1 Official installation doesn't seem to
have any file with that name.
Is there something I'm missing on this? Has anyone installed this particular
plugin?
I have subbed to the Gimp list but it isn't as active as this one.

Thanks and regards,
Bill W.

[newbie] missing usb module?

Hi Everyone,
I have been exploring my LM10 installation on my Dell Inspiron 9100 and when I
went to check usb devices in KDE Control Centre, it returned the following
message...

The diagnostics is:
Library files for libkcm_usb.la not found in paths
Possible reasons:
An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control
module
You have old third party modules lying around.
Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in the
error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor or
packager.

Now, my installation won't recognize my Fuji Finepix 2400 no matter what I do.
Also, a usb player that I have is not recognized. However, a 'Dell' 128 Mb
USB key is!

Could this be a reason for my usb incongruities? What action should be taken
to resolve this?

Thanks,
Bill W.

[newbie] sigmatel mp3 player

I was wondering if there has been progress on mounting these usb mp3 players.
In that other os mine is identified as sigmatel mscn usb device. A google on
that term reveals another player using the same systema Transcend
JetFlash. In their literature they suggest a simple mount command
from /dev/sda1 is all that's needed. Of course, this is not functional in
LM10, to my knowledge. I have tried both kernels on the LM10 CE distro. Has
this been addressed in 'Official'?
Has anyone been successful with this usb mass storage player?

have LM10 CE installed on a Dell laptop dual booting win2k. Aside from a
video resolution issue, LM10 is a nice release for me. One annoying issue,
however, is that if I leave my machine on overnight, it is locked up tight by
morning. Nothing but a hard reboot will get it back. Ctl - Alt - F1 etc.
doesn't respond. I can't get to a command line at all to try and figure it
out.
Is there a log file somewhere that might be recording events leading up to the
freeze?
BTW, I have a simple 'clock' screensaver enabled but 'power management' is not
enabled.

Also, is there any pressing reasons to upgrade to official?

thanks for your ideas,
Bill W.

[newbie] cleaning up old kernels

2004-05-02 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I followed the thread regarding the security update, so I decided to upgrade
my kernel. Urpmi worked flawlessly. After rebooting I decided to try my
digital camerastill no luck. So I installed the 2.4 upgraded kernel.
Camera works like a charm. I now have linux, 2.6 and 2.4 as well as windows
and failsafe in my lilo boot options.
Do I have to 'uninstall' any of the old kernels, as well as 2.6 or can I just
delete them from my lilo?

tia,
Bill W.

[newbie] fuji finepix 2400

2004-05-01 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I was going to try getting the fuji finepix 2400 going again in LM10. A search
through the archives indicated a few threads, all seeming to indicate that
9.2 was almost an automatic install whereas 10 somewhat broke it. An
inexpensive mp3 (usb) player is also not recognized.
Has this usb issue been resolved in LM10 official? Has any list member been
successful mounting the finepix camera on LM10 with 2.6.3-4 kernel?

tia,
Bill W.

Re: [newbie] Wal-Mart music downloads

Hi,
I have followed this thread and found that mplayer will play wma files.

 mplayer --novideo file.wma

Now I don't know if it will play all .wma files but the free one on Walmart
site plays nicely. I'm exploring the comment early on about Jetaudio being
able to strip the drm protection. Problem is, it's a windows prog and I'm
trying to stay out of that side of my computer.

[newbie] digital camera / 2.4 kernel

2004-03-27 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
A thread in the archives suggests that my Fuji camera is not fully supported
in the 2.6 kernel. It also suggests that the 2.4 kernel supplied with LM10
does a better job. (LM9.1 supported it flawlessly)

Is there absolutely no way to have the camera on 2.6?

If not, what is the easiest way to downgrade to the 2.4?

[newbie] kmail lock file

2004-03-23 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
When I boot into LM10 I have been getting a 'KMail can't start because it's
already on a process as shown in the lock file' type message. I initially
tried to 'kill' the process but it isn't acutally running. So I just delete
the lock file. I can't understand why this should be happening since I always
manage a clean shut down.

Has anyone else had this problem. Not major, just a nuisance.

Hi,
I've been following this thread with interest. I just upped to LM10. It almost
seemed too easy. I use it on a Dell laptop (inspiron).
I don't remember if there was an option to write the bootloader to different
locations like in 9.2, 9.1 etc but I was wondering if the bootloader has to
be on the MBR for the bios to pick it up.
Just a thought.

Good luck with it.

  Two screwed-up Machines?

The Gateway HDD works great in a normal machine. In fact to clear
matters up a bit ether of the 2 hard drives suppled by gateway will work
fine in the gateway machine. I can do a standard ML installation with NO
problems at all what so ever. But after the installation when the machine
starts to reboot it hangs at the Gateway splash screen where it says to hit
F2 to enter setup. It does not even go to the LILO boot loader screen. At
that point F2 will not work and the machine will not proceed with booting
up. if I power down and attempt to reboot again I can access the BIOS by
hitting F1 instead of F2. F1 will take me to an other screen where I can
then get to the BIOS settings. When I do get to the BIOS settings and do
some checking I find that the hard drive is undetected. It detects NO
primary master NO primary slave, It does detect the CD drive as a secondary
master. If I remove the HDD and put it in an other machine the other
machine will boot into Linux with no problems at all. If I then Reformat
the drive using Maxblast and a win 98 floppy then reinstall the HDD in the
Gateway machine the gateway machine will be able to detect it correctly and
load windoze back on it and run just fine, but if ML is loaded after the
installation when I go to reboot it is the same old thing the Gateway
machine is no longer able to detect the HDD.
I would still assume that the BIOS in any machine would detect A drive
from information stored on the PC board of the drive and not from
information stored on the disk. Am I wrong about this? The behavior of this
machine seems abnormal at best and possibly a deliberate attempt to prevent
 the
installation of any non microshaft operating system.
I am going to try to contact tech support at Intel, the folks that made
this board for gateway and get some further details.

[newbie] radeon m9 driver for dell laptop

2004-03-21 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I would like to extend my congrats to Mandrake for a significant distro
release. I have installed LM10 on my Inspiron (8000) laptop and it took about
20 minutes. I didn't think it would be successful since I didn't have to
provide any input or make any decisions but it set up all of my devices and
set up my broadband internet without a single keystroke from me. All this on
a dual boot system while retaining my /home directory.
My issue is with the Radeon driver. The system has been set up with the fglrx
driver but this doesn't allow me to change the resolution on the lcd screen.
So I changed to the fbdev driver. This allows me to change the resolution but
the screen display doesn't change..for instance, if I go to 600x480 the
task bar disappears off the bottom of the screen. Ctl - Alt - F1 to a cli to
MCC to change back.
I think I remember a posting on this recently but the archives are still out
of date. (what's up with that?)

My thanks, as well, to everyone who support by helping list members.

Bill W.

[newbie] sigmatel usb mp3 player

Does anyone have this device? Do I have to create any dir's before it will

As root at the command line, type 'urpmi.addmedia --distrib /mnt/cdrom'
after placing cd1 in the drive. This will add all 3 cd's to your sources

I use BBT for my business account (that I have very recently opened). You

But why an ftp server. I can see an ftp client, since it needs to be

Is there some network config file that has to be set up in LM9.1 in order to

Thanks for the thoughts. It sounds pretty reasonable. I am wondering, though,

Anybody have a similar situation that is working? I am running this on a Dell

It would appear that the broadband is using DHCP and your system is
still thinking it's on DHCP and not resolving to the DNS servers your
ISP uses - and maybe not recognising that the gateway has changed...

I'm usually not worried about trying the different options but I'd like to see
if, collectively, any of these differences make sense.
Also, for John, my lilo.conf does have the scsi emulation turned on thus
append=devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=off quiet
Any ideas?

Thanks for everything so far.

Supermount is very much a work in progress, not much is written up yet.
I have never owned a laptop, so experiece with their ide layout is
 unfamiliar to me.

So then, what is the ide layout ?
 Ide0 = Hardrive(s)
Ide1 = cdrom and writer , master and slave in that order ?

 Or is it,
Ide0 = harddrive and writer, configured mater and slave ?

 Assuming the first layout,

 Harddrive = /dev/hda

 cdrom = /dev/hdc
writer = /dev/hdb but is it scsi-emulated in /etc/lilo.conf as
 hdd=ide-scsi ?

so, under supermount , cdrom and writer fstab entries look to be correct..

The floppy entry looks correct, if you still have one.

If it doesn't work then maybe it's a hardware related issue.
first try, cdrecord -scanbus to make sure it's on the bus.
Then there are further commands to issue to test the capability of the
drives, but I cannot rememebr what they are. Maybe Tom Brinkman can jog

[newbie] lost login settings

2003-07-01 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I had to do a hard power reset and now when I boot into LM9 I get the
graphical login screen with my user and all other (installed) users...like
ftp, gopher, cdrecord etc. Also, I cannot access any window manager like
kde, gnome, icewm etc. All that is available is 'default' and 'failsafe'.
These both boot to a cli. As root I can config my user to automatically boot
into kde but I would like to config the login screen back to my single user
with all options for window managers. Where are these configuration options
available?

Hi All,
I had to do a hard reset and now when I boot into LM9 my login options
are whacked. I used to have one user now there are many. ftp, udp, games
etc. are all on the login screen. Also, my user can't login to any window

course)
I managed to login as root, start kde and setup my user to automatically
login to kde so I know it is still functional but I can't find the
configuration utility to clean up the login process. I don't like the auto
login situation.
Where in the config area can I find what I need?

[newbie] new vid card

2003-06-16 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi Everyone,
I just installed a new video card in my Dell laptopInspiron 8000.
Formerly I had an ATI M4 Rage Mobility (8 Meg) and I installed an ATI M9
Radeon 9000 (64 Meg). Can anyone give me the basic upgrade procedure for
getting a working XF86Config-4 file. Of course, when I booted into Mandrake
9 it put me to a command line and X would not start.
I used to know how to get it to upgrade but LM9 is so darn stable, I
haven't had to play with it since I installed it.
IIRC, it's somewhere in the expert / installation routine. But I want to be
sure so I don't hoop my installation.
BTW, it is a dual boot Win2k / LM9 machine.

If anyone has this combo, perhaps a copy of your file will suffice.
Also, I have no problem working out of the cli.

Thanks in advance,
Bill W.

Of course using IE allows me to input the user/pass, no problem.

Is there a linux solution?

[newbie] libsmbclient info

2003-03-02 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,

I am trying to access a windows authenticated site to retrieve some
files. I have no problem when using IE but I get this error on any linux
browser.

HTTP 401.3 - Access denied by ACL on resource
Internet Information Services

I did a google search and found others with the same problem. A possible
solution offered was the libsmbclient but I cannot find any documentation on
it at all.

Does anyone else need to access files via http? Is there another method? The
network admin that is serving the files has no use for linux so he will not
change anything on his end.

I just hate booting to windows to retrieve this info, then back to linux for
everything else.

I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, but what's the best laptop
for the average Linux distro?
I had, at first, targeted Compaq's Presario 2800T, but I caught wind that
Compaq's suck for Linux. (This could
explain my current problems) I'm buying two new laptops for me and my

Anyway, I'd be happy to hear everyone's input. Thanks!

[newbie] mozilla install

2002-10-12 Per discussione Bill Winegarden
Hi,
I'm running LM8.2 I have upgraded to Galeon 1.2.6 and I found out that I had
to upgrade Mozilla to 1.1. I ran mozilla-installer as root and found that it
would not overwrite the existing version 9.8.
No big deal, I thoughtmake a new dir called mozilla-1.1 and install
there. Then I renamed /usr/local/mozilla to /usr/local/mozilla_old. Also,
renamed /usr/local/mozilla-1.1 to /usr/local/mozilla so plugins would be
recognized.
However, when I run mozilla from the command line or from
K-Networking-WWW-Mozilla it continues to run the old 9.8 version. Surely, I
don't have to re-boot.
I'm leery of deleting the old version till I get this working. But maybe
that's what is required.

 Hi Randy,

Seriously, I'm fairly certain there isn't any such thing in Linux in as
much as setting a default browser goes in the understood sense of the
phrase. Rather you can tell the system which browser to use when certain
 conditions arise or events happen.

e.i. In Pine when I want a webpage accessed via an embedded URL in the
message I've set Links in the program prefs to handle all URL calls from
 Pine.

If you're taling about setting things up in KDE to do the same thing I
don't recall there being a way in which to do that other then that
anoying little popup thing that comes out of the tool tray that I always
turn off. you've got me curious now though so I'm going to start diggin
 around.

[newbie] usb mass storage

2002-08-18 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I went the gphoto website and was directed to another page to set up my
camera. Apparently, it has to be considered a mass storage device. (even in
windows) There is no problem with that. In fact, I prefer that. After
creating the directory /media/camera, I was told to add the following lines
to the etc/fstab file.

/dev/sdb1 /media/camera vfat ro,noauto,user 0 0.

Now typing mount /media/camera reveals the files stored on the camera.
Beauty!

Here's my problem...during boot up I get 4 error messages regarding
supermount and device 0/110/120/13and 0/14

Otherwise everything works great.

Is this anything to worry about? Should the fstab line be changed somehow to
include supermount?

BTW, this is on a standard LM8.2 installation.

If more info is needed, please ask.

TIA,
Bill W.

Re: [newbie] file transfer utility?

2002-07-17 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
If I want to transfer files from my laptop to my home directory on the
college server (win2k) I have to mount it as a drive.
First create a directory in linux to 'show' your home directory
in.something like 'school'.I created mine in the mnt directory where
the rest of the mountables are. So, open a terminal, and as root type mkdir
school. This will create the directory. Then type exit to get out of your
root account.
Now whenever you want to access your school files type
mount -t smbfs -o username=whateveryourwindowsusernameis
//winservername/youraccount  /mnt/school

I know it seems a little complicated but it's not really. The command is
telling your computer to mount a smb filesystem (windows) and you have to
state the windows server name followed by the path to your school account.
Then there is a space and /mnt/school

The windows server should then ask for your password. Supply it and now all
your school files are visible and accessible in /mnt/school using any file
manager ... Konqueror down on the button bar is easy to use and appears
similar to Windows Explorer.

I hope this helps...You can also automate this to automagically mount
your windows shares but I just type the command when required.

for that server.
It is a site that keeps track of the usage of various servers across the
internet and is generally considered on of the most reliable.

[newbie] kmail transports

2002-04-19 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I use a laptop at home and at work with 2 separate mail transport servers.
Is there a way to set up KMail to easily switch between the two? In the help
file they mention an Add Transport... button under the identity tab. I can't
seem to find it? What am I missing here?

Bill W.

[newbie] master browser

2002-04-08 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
 My local sysadmin (linux hater)
says that my LM8.2 installation is giving 'many' error messages on the NT
intranet. He says that my linux laptop is configured as a master browser. What
do I have to do to restore peace?

Thanks and regards,

[newbie] slow mnt in konqueror file manager

2002-04-07 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I'm running LM8.2 on a Dell laptop. An irritating problem is that whenever I
click on mnt in Konqueror it takes minutes to list its sub-directories. It
appears to freeze until it finally displays.
Anyone else run into this?

Bill W.

[newbie] copy all

2002-03-28 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
A while back someone gave the command for a total, recursive copy of all
files for a drive to drive exchange. I searched the archive but to no avail.
I can't remember the subject line so I hope someone will have the info at
hand.

[newbie] 8.2 on Dell laptop

2002-03-23 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I decided to do a full install on my Dell I8000 laptop. A few
glitches.

#1.I had to choose a Dell 1400 laptop display in the monitor selection
screen..almost all others give this error/tmp/imm.o init_module no
such device
Even so, I use a 800x600 resolution during the install but it
defaults to the 1400 resolution very tinyctrl/alt/+ or - have no
effect

#2.In Konqueror when I try to access /mnt , it freezes. I think this may
be because I have 2 cdroms in the laptop and no floppy. When I go to
shutdown I get several error messages like umount : /mnt/floppy :
illegal seek..I have to do a hard power off..

I could reinstall the floppy drive (it was there when I installed 8.1) and
then once installed, I could pull it and re-install the cdrw

Those are my first couple of bugs to be resolved.

Any Dell laptop users out there on 8.2?

Thanks and regards,
Bill W.

[newbie] kmail attachments

2002-03-13 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I am unable to receive attachments from co-workers. I have three separate
email accounts. I am able to receive attachments on two of the accounts but
on the third, all I receive are the message headers. No attachment.
Unfortunately, I must be able to use this account; it is my work account.
I have not made any changes to the setup in KMail settings. I believe that
the originating mails are sent from Groupwise.

Any thoughts?

TIA,
Bill W.

Re: [newbie] ARRRRRGH Big stinky MESS!!!! (was : Xwindows and RPMdrake problems}

2002-03-12 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
Been there, done that. I think that you might have been able to recover your
installation with a little more info, tho.
In any case, if you are about to do a fresh install, you might consider
hanging tough for a little while longerLM 8.2 is almost done and I hear
it is really sweet.
If you think you might want to upgrade at a later date it might be wise to
start with the latest now.

Just my $.02

 Is it just *ME*!?

I tried the suggestion for doing an update install of the Mandrake 8.1 and
 the whole thing went *HAYWIRE*!

For some reason, it still wanted to mess around with *partitions*! I got
mixed up and must've clicked the wrong button and it destroyed my
partitions set up... Totally unrecoverable!... My regular windows boot
couldn't even *see* the C:\ drive!

I lost GIGABYTES and GIGABYTES of data!!

For the past 4 hours I have been salvaging my machine.

I am up and running again (thanks to a recent move to making backups of at
least *some* of my stuff) Oh, but the *LOSS*! :o(

I *really* want this to work... but I can't help feeling I'm just a dumb
prick to be meddling in things beyond my ken!

But... on the positive side, I have a fresh new machine, with 10 GIGABYTES
of free space on it (where before I had around 200MB)... and I'm at the
stage where I can do a 'from scratch' install of Mandrake 8.1 (hopefully
with some guidance so as to avoid another mishap... or disaster mor like).

I want to re-install... but I'm totally scared I blow it all to hell
again At least now I've a *lot* less to loose.

 Oh Man.

 That really freaked me out.

 ...GIGABYTES...

[newbie] hd swap

Hi,
I am running LM8.1 on a laptop (with much help from this list) along with
W2K. I am running out of room so I am considering installing a 30 gig hard
drive. What is the best method of transferring my entire system from one hd
to the other?
Has anyone had any luck with this?

[newbie] libGLcore.so.1

2002-02-18 Per discussione Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I am trying to install KSetiwatch 2.2.5 on my laptop (ATI Rage Mobility vid
card). I already have version 2.2.2 installed but it seems to be acting
up.won't connect after finishing a unit etc..
In any case, the install fails with a 'failed dependency' on
libGLcore.so.1my research through the archives indicates that this is
part of the nvidia driver rpm. Can I safely force this or do I still need the
file?

Thanks and regards,

Re: [newbie] unzip not in path

Hi,
Thanks to all. Archiver needed 'zip' in order to work. Rest assured that I
can use the CLI but I just wanted to be able to see inside an archive quickly.

In any case, thanks to all once again,
