System Terminals Konsole

OTOH, you probably have a black screen on your taskbar? That will start
konsole.

Hi Dave -don't have time for detailed instructions as I have to go out.
I'd probably get them wrong anyway.

Assuming you are in KDE, there is a little icon of a monitor on your
taskbar towards the lefthand side. klick on this and you have a shell to
type commands in. You should (I think) su to root for this (type su
root without the quotes and enter root password at the prompt).

Good luck

Not claiming to be one of the geniuses ;-) But -

Type 'su' and you can enter root commands. To get out, back to your own
shell, type 'exit'.

Better, though, is to use the menu Session New Root Session. This will open
in a tab and you will always know by the colour whether you are using the
root session or user one. Again, 'exit' is the way to close the session.

[newbie] Install Java for MDK 10.0

2004-12-24 Per discussione Lovell Mcilwain
Hello all,
I have been trying for the past week to install Java on my linux box but
I have not yet had any luck. Is there something I am missing?

I went to java.com and downloaded the latest version of Java. Followed
there directions for installing the .bin file (pretty straight
forward). Once I did that I tried to go to a place the required java
and it didn't load.

Is there another way that I can install it or is there a directory that
I need to reference with my firefox browser?

Any help would be great.
Thanks,

From: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html#Linux

If you installed the JRE 5.0 RPM, this plugin is
/usr/java/j2re1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so - and to
install it for Mozilla (including Mozilla Firefox), do the following:

* Open a terminal
* Change to your Mozilla (or Mozilla Firefox) plugins directory
* Issue the following command: ln -s
/usr/java/j2re1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

You're probably missing a link. IIRC java does not get installed where
Mozilla/FireFox expects it, so you have to go to the plugins directory and
create a link to the java .so file. Maybe someone using FireFox can give you
more specific instructions.

is there anybody out there who made java vm work?

I haven't finished installing it myself, so I can't vouch for it, but try
Blackdown Java: http://blackdown.org/

This is a Linux port of Sun's Java tools (community source, not open source,
unfortunately; there doesn't seem to be an open source Java that has moved
beyond version 1.1). They currently have 1.4.2, and working on 1.5. I saw
mention of a Mozilla plugin, but again, I haven't tried it yet. HTH

Vegard; Go to this site,
http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9719
download and install the rpm version of Java, then follow the steps at
this page

http://java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.jsp#install-pkg
exactly, paying attention to the version number of Java that you have
downloaded.

When it comes to making symbolic links for your browsers, you can follow
the java instructions or open Konqueror and browse to the Java folder
where the plugins are located, drag and 'link here' the plugin into your
browser's plugin folder. If you have multiple browsers that you like to
use, drag and link a copy of the plugin to each of the respective
browser's plugin folder and again 'link here'.

I did mine by hand the hard way - which I like even better than the
Kaffe version of JavaVM that comes bundled with 10.0 OE

I created a dir in /usr/src for the jre binary I got from Sun; then
edited the /etc/profiles.d/jre shell scripts to point to the new dir;
then put my plugins in their proper places
(/usr/lib/mozilla-1.6/plugins, /usr/local/firefox/plugins and so on) as
well as renamed the necessary softlinks in /usr/bin to point to the
proper binaries...works like a charm - but a bit of work...

- you are running rpm -iv as root, right?
- maybe the file was corrupt dutring download, have you tried to

Hello
Im trying to get Azareus a java based BitTorrent client to work on my mandrake

executable to what it really is, but now i get this error from the java gui:

An error occurred while launching/running the application.

Category: Invalid Argument error

Too many arguments supplied: {-cp, swt-pi.jar:swt-mozilla.jar:swt.jar:Azureus2.

Seeing as I have the java plugin installed for Mozilla so i assumed that mozilla
is conflicting, but i still get the same message when i close mozilla.

Any ideas?

I had already done that : (
The wierd thing is, i went on that test page and it says no java enabled,
but it says the version no. (1.3) and that cookies are enabled which it says
should only be displayed if java test says enabled.
From the experience of trying to install Bit Torrent, should there be some
stuff on java in /etc/mailcap file?

Tried look for Kaffe but too many file needed for the rpm so i think ill
keep trying to get java sun working.

I just talked a friend through installing Java on a fresh 9.2 install over
the
phone last night and while doing that I realized that my java version
wasn't
current. So I ran through the same procedure as I was instructing him to
use
and it all worked.

While about it; apparently the answer to your question about the plug-in
version being gcc32 is yes, that's the correct one. Not that it seemed to
matter on this system.
The following instructions are what worked for my friend in a fresh
install.
The last step was slightly different for my machine because I have upgraded
Mozilla to version 1.5 from MandrakeClub. I had to add the symlink for that
as well as the default location.

Download the J2SE rpm.bin file from Sun, open a terminal in the directory
it
was saved to and as super user:

sh j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin
urpmi j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.rpm
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03//plugin/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
In order to make this work for mine I had to add the target

/usr/lib/mozilla-1.5/plugins/

I tested, and had Ed (my friend) test java function by going to this page:

http://www.expertit.co.uk/support/browsertest/

with every java capable browser he had installed. They all worked, as did
my
Mozilla 1.5.

Best of luck to you. It makes no sense why I have no trouble with java here
in
Mozilla and yours crashes, except for a possible bug in the _alpha_ level
version of Mozilla you're running. Have you upgraded Mozilla to the beta
version yet?

whack

application/x-java-jnlp-file; /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/javaws/javaws %s

I didn't add that manually to the mailcap file. But you're right, it is there.
It's the last line.

I'm absolutely positive that my friend Ed didn't change any configurations in
anything since he's an almost totally _raw gnubie_ and while he isn't afraid
to try things he won't until someone gives him links to information. His java
worked with just the instructions I gave him, which is what I posted.

Try adding the relevant version path to mailcap and try again maybe?

Good luck Martin.

The package directly from sun but I think you already have that.

Try to do a locate /usr/lib/mo*/plugins and see what comes up. My guess

machine
that is missing the requisite link. Creating the link worked immediately

my Mozilla 1.4 installation. But I did have to find the right directory.
On
my current machine I have a /usr/lib/mozilla, /usr/lib/mozilla-1.3.1,
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.3 and /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4 and all have plugins
directories. The correct one was /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins.

Or you could try installing Kaffe which, if my memory serves me correctly,
is
a free java virtual machine available as a Mandrake RPM.

In the mozilla/plugins directory, you need to create a symbolic link to
libjavaplugin_oji.so in the java plugins/i386/ns610 directory.
Something like
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1_4_2_03/plugins/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.6/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01//plugin/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

That's the command I used (as super user) to finish the Java install. It works
for me. The /mozilla/plugins directory is supposed to be the default location
for all versions of Mozilla to read plug-in data from. Since I didn't change
anything after I installed Mozilla 1.5 post 9.2 install; and since the
plug-ins still work correctly, I would tend to believe it.

I'd remove any java plug in links/copies from all Mozilla directories and run
the command again. Don't forget that plug-in only works as a link, if you
copy it it breaks IIRC.

Best of luck.

To answer the question you pose requires me to ask you; why? What does 1.6a
have to do with the compiler version? Did you download the source code and
compile Mozilla yourself using gcc32?

A few more questions:

You downloaded the Sun J2RE package or the J2SDK and installed it, and it
works as expected everywhere except in Mozilla? Is it working in Konqueror
or???

Are you sure this problem isn't just because you're running Mozilla alpha
level software? You do know that 1.6 beta was released on Tuesday?

Are there any java problems reported on bugzilla?

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

Since I'm running the unsupported Mozilla 1.5 from Mandrake Club I don't know
what else to suggest. Mine works, yours doesn't and the only real difference
seems to be the version of the browser you're running.

If you find an answer I hope you'll post it here. Good luck.

First check your path statement with echo $PATH you should get the path
for
yourself, and it should not contain /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin. If it
does,
then something else is wrong. If it isn't, then you need to update the
path
 statement by typing export PATH=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin:$PATH.

That should fix it for you.

 --
Thanks Rob

Looking at the PATH statement, the line /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin was
not in the path..for some reason there was a /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_01/bin
statement in the path. Using your explanation got me java back.

On a related topic, how does one edit the Path statement directly? I have
been through some of the man pages and the Running Linux book and have not
spotted any way to directly edit the Path statement, like editing the
autoexec.bat file in Dosor is this possible?

Looks like it didn't get installed, maybe it's there anyway.

Try locate java | grep /bin/ to see if it's there at all. If your'e not

 My output:

You missed something HarM, mine is where it belongs and works without fault or

[newbie] Installing Java 1.4.2.x

2003-11-25 Per discussione Doug Roberts
Greetings all

What I did.
Downloaded java re 1.4.2_02 and installed the RPM in the self extracting
file. Using grpmi it seemed to install well enough into
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin.(Yeah I'm coming from a Win/Dos background and
did everything from the KDE desktop.)

How do I get the system to recognize that a new java is now ready and
available? I do need it for another java program I need to install on the
machine.

First check your path statement with echo $PATH you should get the path for
yourself, and it should not contain /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin. If it does,
then something else is wrong. If it isn't, then you need to update the path
statement by typing export PATH=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin:$PATH.

That should fix it for you.

Re: [newbie] [hijacked] java plugin, was Mozilla and my bank

2003-08-01 Per discussione Eric Huff
Here we go again. Never been able to get Java plugin installed.
Tried again a few months ago, and again yesterday on the clock applet
link. Although the blurb says downloading takes 19 minutes on a 56
kilobaud modem, in reality it takes well over an hour, $2 worth of
connect time at best, $6 at worst. At the end of that hour it
blithely informs me that download was unsuccessful - error 202. What
the hell is error 202? And is there a chance that the file could be
 cached somewhere?

Don't know about error 202.

As for not getting it to work, did you read thru the deep and confusing
notes about which plugin you need?

It's all new stuff since just a month or so ago, so i haven not yet
installed this stuff. (i am still at the jre 1.4.1 level).

So now you are left with the 2 versions based on gcc#, which you can
check by typing about:buildconfig into your mozilla. It looks as though
they both get installed, and you just have to link to the proper one.

There is an rpm for java's jre 1.4.2

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Here's a couple pages on the random walk you go thru to figure out what
to install:

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#Javasays:

NOTE: Mozilla 1.4RC2 and later are built with gcc 3.2.3. You will need
to use the gcc3 build of the Java Plugin with Mozilla 1.4RC2 or later.

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/javalinux.html says:

If you're not familiar with symbolic linking, permissions and all, there
are 2 ways you can do this.

* Log in as root, and use the following command at a console,
replacing [Mozilla Installation Directory] with the appropriate value
for your installation (eg. /usr/local/mozilla): ln -s
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so [Mozilla
Installation Directory]/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

* Create ~/.mozilla/plugins if it doesn't exist. Then use the
following command at a console: ln -s
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

NOTE: If you are using a gcc3 build of Mozilla (such as Mozilla 1.4 or
Netscape 7.1), use the plugin in the ns610-gcc32 directory, not the
ns610 directory. To check which compiler was used to build Mozilla, see
about:buildconfig (Mozilla 1.4a or later).

Not sure if this helps you or not, but at least now *I* know why
mozilla-firebrd handles jave for me and mozilla doesn't !

[newbie] Konqueror Java question

2003-02-15 Per discussione Kristjan

Hi

I have still a minor problem in Konqueror as I dont see javascript in it
I have KDE 3.1 MDK 9.0

one example
www.mamboserver.com (a nice CMS)

They have menu on top of the page (under the logo) made with javascript
I see it without any problems in Mozilla (1.1), but do not in Konqueror.

I have enabled Javascript and Java on Konqueror settings.
Also the path to java is correct ( /usr/java/j2re1.4.1/bin/java )

So can anybody advise what I need to check to get javascripts work in Konqueror.

I had the problem already on KDE 3.0.x so upgrade has nothing to do.

Kristjan, in the konqueror settingsconfigure konqueror, do you see the icon

that and you will see a tab that says javascript. Open that tab and see if
the enable javascript globally is checked. It should be, but you never

Installing JDK from Sun HOWTO

Installing Java from Sun, found at http://java.sun.com is an easy
task and doesn't need to be, nor should it be seen as a terribly
hard thing to do. Here are the steps to take in order to make this
happen.

OBTAINING THE PACKAGES FOR INSTALLATION:

1. Point your browser to the URL above at the Sun site, download
   the packages you need.
a. if you're a Java developer, or a beginning Java programmer
then all you're going to need is the JDK package.
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html
b. if you do have a need for both the JDK and JRE packages
you can get both packages from the same place. How to accomplish
this will become self-evident once you're there and see how
things work.
c. if you don't know whether or not you need both, then it's very
likely you don't and should just download the JDK package.

The links for downloading JDK=(SDK) or JRE are clearly marked and
easily and quickly visible. For Linux there are two types of files
you can download. Personally I feel the Linux Self extracting file
is the easiest to work with. You can also download the RPM self
extracting file if you want to install JDK/JRE via the RPM method.
However, there is a drawback to getting the RPM and doing the
install that way.

By getting the plain self-extracting package, you, the user have
total control as to where it gets installed to. When I explain
the actual installation of the package you'll see the more
clearly why this method of installation is easier and less work.
With the RPM installation you actually have to know more about what
needs to be done in order for things to work correctly.

INSTALLING THE JDK/JRE PACKAGE:

 * Ok, assuming your download completed cleanly and successfully
its time to start the installation. There isn't anything magical
about getting this done. It's a simple and painless process. If you're
a Mandrake Linux user and you're currently running version 8.2 or
above, then it's likely you've already got a version of Java
installed on your system that comes with and installs with the
system. This Java system will perform most things adequately enough
for small tasks. However, it is limited in scope and functionality
which is why you're probably reading this HOWTO right now. This is
not to knock Mandrake or their preparaion of the system, but
merely to mention that the Java version that ships with Mandrake
8.2 and above is limited and can't do the things that Sun's package
can and does.

NOTE: In order to know for certain what version of Java may, or
may not exist on your system issue this command to find out
from the system what is installed on it:

   java -version

You'll get one of three back from the system.
1. if it's a stock Mandrake install you'll see this returned
   to the terminal;

Kaffe Virtual Machine
Copyright (c) 1996-2000
Transvirtual Technologies, Inc. All rights reserved
Engine: Just-in-time v3 Version: 1.0.6 Java Version: 1.1

(again, for RedHat machines or other distros you can
try this, but I'm not sure exactly what you'll get
returned to the terminal. If you get something similar
then the steps below will work for you as well. this

HI Tom,

that method has never worked for me. I don't think that package likes me
much. which is why I just started unpacking the contents into /usr/java,
and then making symlinks from /usr/java/bin to /usr/bin.

[newbie] Installing Java...

2003-02-09 Per discussione Julian Templeman
OK... now I've got 9.0 working, time to do something with it!

I need Java on here, so I've downloaded the .bin distribution from
Sun. Since I'm still a Clueless Newbie at this stage, I want advice on
the best place to install it... On a Windows machine I'd just install
it any-dam-where and add the directory to the path. Is this the
recommended way on Linux, or should the Java folder tree live
somewhere in particular?

Thanks!

For mandrake 9.0 you can do the following

After install of the bin you will need to link it to the java bin

 ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/bin/java /usr/bin/java

Change j2re1.4.1_01 to what java you have installed.

You can also just move the files over to the /usr/bin/java directory,
as they are installed in a block, in what ever directory they get
put. Or you can just add the new java directory to your path.

Or you could do it the way it is done by default in 9.0, with the
/etc/alternatives system...

As root do: update-alternatives --display java

you should get something like the following output:

java - status is auto.
link currently points to /usr/lib/kaffe/bin/java
/usr/lib/kaffe/bin/java - priority 30

to add the new java to the alternatives system do (as root):

update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java
/usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/bin/java 40

The above is one line. Then 'update-alternatives --display java' should
give the following output:

java - status is auto.
link currently points to /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/bin/java
/usr/lib/kaffe/bin/java - priority 30
/usr/lib/j2re1.4.1_01/bin/java - priority 40

man update-alternative will give you the inside scoop.

Hope this helps

John...

I don't think java.rpm sets up the path to the executables. You can do
it by hand adding it to your .bashrc. Or, you can create a
/etc/profile.d/local.sh as root, and put those settings there, so they
will be loaded by all the users when they login.

For example, here's my /etc/profile.d/local.sh (but for .bashrc it would
be the same):
-
# Configuration variables added by me

# variables for Forte Java Developement environment
export JDK_HOME=/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0/
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0/bin

# variable for Mozilla 1.0
export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/local/mozilla
-

The ony advantage I see of having a ~/bin is that its content will not
be deleted (provided /home is in its own partition) when you upgrade the
distribution. But be warned that normally rpm packages will install in a
system directory (i.e. /usr/local or the like) and it will not be easy
to convince them to use ~/bin instead. I abandoned the ~/bin almost
immediately.
Unless, of course, you plan to develop your own stuff. In this case, a
~/bin and the proper path is the way to go.

raffaele

Or, you could simply place symlinks from the java executables into
/usr/bin and you wouldn't have to fuss with any of the PATH stuff cause
/usr/bin is already in all the $USER paths.

Hi there,

plugins for Mozilla/Netscape...etc...

anyway...if you're needing the java plugin for Netscape, or Mozilla go
follow the link below and you'll be able to download and install the
java plugin. And by the way...this does not require the download and
install of Sun's JDK or JRE packages. This is a seperate browser plugin.

IMPORTANT NOTE: you Must be root user when you do this or the plugin

Hi !

Here's how I installed j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin.

chmod a+x j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

then
./j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

and fin'lly
rpm -Uvh j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm

Then, following the instructions on the mozilla plugins page

$ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Mozilla can see it now.

My first question is: How can I know if java in my PATH ? (In case I want to
run a program that depends on it)

[cyberhades@localhost cyberhades]$ $PATH
bash:
/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/cyberhades/bin:

No such file or directory

Second question: Am I supposed to create a ~/bin directory ? Would there be an
advantage in creating it ?

Thanks in advance.

If you use Mozilla or Phoenix (don't know about NS7) and haven't been
using custom keyword searching, now's the time to learn.

Just go to any site that has a search (like the newbie archives at
http://www.mail-archive.com/newbie@linux-mandrake.com/), enter a dummy
search phrase like coffee (no quotes) and bookmark the results page.

Next, go to Bookmarks Mangage bookmarks, and look at the properties of
the bookmark you just made. Locate the word coffee in the URL and replace
it with %s (no quotes). In the keyword field, enter a short phrase
you'll remember; I use newb.

Now when I enter newb boot hang cups in the address bar I go directly to
the results page of a Mandrake newbie search on boot hang cups.
Pretty cool!

I also have custom searches for Freshmeat.net, rpmfind.net, m-w.com,
sourceforge, amazon.com, LDP, google (web, groups, images, and news) and
a few others. Very handy for URL's I'm always forgetting/misplacing.

Still no joy, Netscape also refuses to recognize this version of java
and, although Mozilla an Galeon recognize the updated version, they
still crash instantly when encountering a page with an applet.

 Rich

I just installed the Java plugin and it was a lot easier than messing around
with j2re.They install automatically.I had to run my browser as root to have
permission to install. Then restart as user and voila you got java.

You can, in fact, install Star Office without Java if neccessary however...
:o)

The Java package is pretty much self installing, from memory. Could you post
the name of the package you downloaded please because there are sources,
which is done one way, and RPMs which are done another. For example I
downloaded the rpm.bin.

all'altra ed usare quella nuova senza problemi?

[newbie-it] java

 *cd /usr/bin
 rm java javac jar
 ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/java java
 ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/javac javac
 ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/jar jar*

Ora puoi
 installare anche limewire per esempio

ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/jar jar*

[newbie] Yikes - Java

2002-11-11 Per discussione Gary Armstrong
I'm still trying to get argoUML working. I successfuly loaded j2sdk and
attempted argoUML. It failed requiring 8 other modules( if that's the correct
term ). Anyway, I'm not easily discourage, so I download an rpm for each of
the 8.

Tried installing the first, ant and yup it failed on about 10 more
dependencies. It's my experience, that when it seems like I'm working to
hard, I usually am.

Is there some kind of package/rpm that would include all the most commonly
used java modules? So far, I've found rpms for these java modules at
sourceforge. Can some installer be told to search the sorceforge site? Last,
have I just missed the true path?

TIA
Gary

i
a

 Ciao a tutti:
 Ciao a tutti,

[newbie-it] java

2002-05-27 Per discussione Luigi

ciao ragazzi
vers.1_3_2ecc.

$java -version

e controlli
