Why do not you consider installing the xft version of mozilla? http://www.scottbolander.com/mozilla-xft.html Will check that site. Btw, does it mean that mozilla.org versions of Mozilla suffer from some problems related to that matter - just wonder? I do not know. Initially, when I installed Mozilla by the first time, the fonts looked ugly and someone on Mozilla forums suggested me to install the xft version of Mozilla. I looked for it in the Internet and I found the site above mentioned. Re: [newbie] Re: Re: Copying Files from CDROM
I've started downloading the linux 2.4.24 kernel in tar.bz2 format. I hope this is the right one. I see the latest stable one is 2.6.3. I went into the Linux Programme installer and found a number of files described as the Linux Kernel. I installed them, but suddenly my whole Linux installation is messed up. Sound driver does not work, file systems arn't mounting. It seems I'm going to have to re-install the whole business. I'll first try to install everything and specifically select these kernel files. If that does not work, I'll just do a default installation. Tomorrow I'm going to borrow a friend's external Mercer USB modem. If it works, I might considder saving up to buy my own. Question: how do I edit the Makefile file in my modem driver directory. I see there is a reference to the linux-kernel there, and in stead of typing $ make KERNEL_ path to root I could possibly put that path directly into the Makefile. I really thank you for your help on this akward problem. Any wisdom will do, and I am definitely learnign a lot. When I finally get it right, I will make sure that I help other people to do it as well. The Yamaha OPL3 is supported by Alsa according to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php3?vendor=vendor-Yamaha#matrix To install the Alsa driver 1/ Install the alsa-utils, alsamixergui, and newt packages (If not already installed) 2/ Make a backup copy of /etc/modules.conf 3/ In a root terminal run alsaconf Alsaconf will write a new modules.conf file with the correct settings for your sound card. 4/ Copy back by hand those lines in the old modules.conf which are not sound related. 5/ Reboot into the new sound driver, and in KDEControlCentreSoundSoundSystem set the sound server to Alsa 6/ Use alsamixergui to select default sound levels and save them. 7/ In xmms it may work better if you select the Output Plugin to be alsa. If it does not work replace the alsaconf generated lines in modules.conf with the ones from your backup. derek -- -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Many questions, but since you get sound from CD's, I still think your mixer has muted pcm. Could be...so where does one fined and fix the ' muted pcm' problem, if that is the problem? Well, all your tests above suggets that you DO have a soundcard :) No output from lspci indicates, to me, that you have an ISA-cards, or at least not a pci-card. I think you can bypass KDE and mixer-setting by using 'play' if its installed.Try 'play --device=/dev/sound/dsp a_sound_file_in_wav_format.wav' If you get a 'device busy' message, wait a minute and try again Now, if you _do_ get sound then, your physical setting are ok. (which they are since you could play cd's) Then check KMix again. Right-click the icon in the taskbar, show mixer and check the 3rd item from left, wich should be pcm. There's a tooltip at the little icon above each slider. Volume up, and not muted. If it doesn't work, then I have to leave it to some expert, since I'm out of ideas good luck /Björn Thanks for your help Bjorn.. I really do appreciate it. But nothing seems to work at the moment. I did the 'play --device=/dev/sound/dsp a_sound_file_in_wav_format.wav' command as you suggested and the .wav file played nicely.

Re: [newbie] avi re-code
I have an AVI movie split in two disks (600Mb each). I would like to re-encode it to fit in a single 600Mb disk. Any hints on the tools I should use? i heard from mencoder, but i didnt use it yet. my fav is virtualdub, but it runs with windows... :/ you can run it with wine, its no problem. but first of all you have to install a divx codec and mp3 codec or somethin' with wine on a windows-fake. there are lots of tutorials out there, if you dont fin some, tell me ;) remo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Hi, OK lets usume you use mandrake 9.1 (older versions differ in some respects) When booting it goes to the user selected on install. On KDE. Right click on mouse - select logout. On GNOME select start logout. Now it goes to where different user may logon This if you installed more than one user otherwise you will be there only. Now here is 3 options 1..select other user (NO option for ROOT) 2.. REBOOT - if selected it MAY have a dropdown list to select way of rebooting. Why I say may - sometimes the dropdown list is empty - if empty then select HALT. 3 .HALT If above is all hash - then use* alt - cntrl -del * this will - if it works reboot. OR Open console - su - password - shutdown -r (or -h) now. If nothing of the above works - sorry beyond my scope Now this not recommended - switch off. Re: [newbie-it] Re: Rete Linux-Amiga e condivisione della connessione

Ciao, Germano

I have heard (with no proof though) that sometimes this can happen when the system has some faulty memory which gets accessed. If you have 2 or more memory modules, you could try to remove one temporarily and see if that helps. It might come to that, Paul, but I'm reluctant as it doesn't happen in any other app. Anne -- Registered Linux User No.293302 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Paul This is a repeat of an issue we had in here a few months back with a user that was constantly being knocked back to the KDM/GDM/XDM - and it turned out to be either session settings or screensaver settings - best to look for that prior to mucking around with the physical machine. Either which, if there is a problem with the RAM, you'd know it right off the bat - the kernel would be choking and puking on that as the kernel writes to RAM during the boot phase... -- Wed, 22 Jan 2003 21:25:00 +1100 9:25pm up 6 days, 7:08, 4 users, load average: 0.06, 0.15, 0.13 -- |____ | kuhn media australia| | / ,, /| |'-. | http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |=| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' | stephen kuhn| | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | |/ ._/ || | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | |'. `\ | | |icq: 5483808 | | ;/ / | | | | | smk ) /_/| |.---.| | mobile: 0410-728-389| | ' `-`' | Berkeley, New South Wales, AU | -- linux user:267497 * RH 8.0 * PC/Mac/Linux/Networking/Consulting -- Hard Copies and Chmod And everyone thinks computers are impersonal cold diskdrives hardware monitors user-hostile software of course they're only bits and bytes and characters and strings and files just some old textfiles from my old boyfriend telling me he loves me and he'll take care of me simply a discarded printout of a friend's directory deep intimate secrets and how he doesn't trust me couldn't hurt me more if they were scented in lavender or mould on personal stationery -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Anne It is more likely a problem with your hardware and the kernel's implementation of APIC, which is by no means universal in scope yet. Try booting with linux noapic (esc at the boot screen then type in linux noapic without the quotes and enter. If that solves the problem, add a noapic to the append line of each linux boot in your boot configuration. Civileme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
