Well, I can see the direct cause of the problem, but not the underlying
cause. For some reasion the lo interface is not comming up. Now to find
 out why...

The next step would be to look at /etc/hosts, and
/etc/sysconfig/networking/cfg-lo and see if there is something strange
there. (You may want to check to be sure
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo is a link pointing to
 ../networking/ifcfg-lo.)

it says, if you have problems, try another netmask...

# If you're having problems with gated making 127.0.0.0/8 a martian,
# you can change this to something else (255.255.255.255, for example)

maybe it could help.

I believe that to make a CD or DVD bottable, you hae to specify a boot image,
which I believe should be that exact size of a floppy disk image, so you can
use one of the floppy images in the images directory to make the DVD
bootable. Alternatively, you could create the DVD archive, and then use a
boot floppy to get started.

Another thought, if you have the bandwidth to copy the whole dang tree down,
you might want to consider an ftp install.

Or if the OP has that much bandwidth, and enough space, what's wrong with
doing an hard drive install using the boot.iso in the images directory? That
image is about 8 MB. A CD-RW current for the version of Mandrake wanted is
all that's needed. That and knowing where the tree is on the drive.

It's the quickest and easiest method since you don't have to wait for network
slowdowns or switch disks or put up with speed bumps from optical drives.

That's the method I use for most customer's systems I assemble. I got sick of
paying for blank CD-Rs.

Find a reputable dealer, try pricewatch.com, for example. The brand of
external modem is pretty much a no-brainer -- Courier HST. This is kind
of hard to believe, but searching for that on www.pricewatch.com just
now yields one result, from www.ictcompany.com, in Massachusetts. $21.00
and in stock. (Actually, that one link was for a slower speed model, not
56K, which likely explains its low price. But WTH, I just might pick one
of them up to use as a fax modem. When I tossed out that internal, I
lost the ability to send faxes over the phone line, and internet-based
faxing has never worked.)

ictcompany.com does have one 56k v.everything for $145.

I've not been around modems for sometime, but Courier modems used to go
for upwards of $500 years ago. I had a USR sportster internal model
(paid at least $200), picked it up in 1995, it worked very nicely. But I
have DSL, and my current motherboard has no ISA slots, so I tossed it
out :(.

existing profile without asking me). I was quite upset. Don't know if this is
related to your problem, but netscape does not cooperate well with mozilla on
the same machine.

Miroslav Skoric disseminated the following:

In fact, it looks to me that what came with Mdk 9.1 appear just fine on
the screen, but what is *added* i.e. installed later, looks ugly. As I
mentioned, I installed Netscape 7.1 as well as Mozilla 1.6 in their
respective default directories (into different paths from the 'original'
Moz 1.3 so they couldn't 'fight' in between etc). Nothing complained
during the installation, finally both of them run here (of course, not
in parallel because I use the same profile) - but just look poor.

My question is, how did you install them? If you installed from a source
package, you have to build them with XFT (ie. the good looking fonts) enabled.

If, however, you install them using the Mandrake Software Manager or urpmi, they
should come with XFT already enabled.

Why do not you consider installing the xft version of mozilla?

http://www.scottbolander.com/mozilla-xft.html
Will check that site. Btw, does it mean that mozilla.org versions of
Mozilla suffer from some problems related to that matter - just wonder?
I do not know. Initially, when I installed Mozilla by the first time,
the fonts looked ugly and someone on Mozilla forums suggested me to
install the xft version of Mozilla. I looked for it in the Internet and
I found the site above mentioned. Xft version of Mozilla looks beautiful
on my computer, in general, but it looks even better if I import MS
Windows truetype fonts. I do not know why; I have just followed the
advice generously given to me by others. I cannot say anything else to
you, as this is all my story.

2004-03-10 Per discussione Weiers Coetser
I've started downloading the linux 2.4.24 kernel in tar.bz2 format.

I hope this is the right one. I see the latest stable one is 2.6.3.

I went into the Linux Programme installer and found a number of files
described as the Linux Kernel. I installed them, but suddenly my whole Linux
installation is messed up. Sound driver does not work, file systems arn't
mounting. It seems I'm going to have to re-install the whole business. I'll
first try to install everything and specifically select these kernel files.
If that does not work, I'll just do a default installation.

Tomorrow I'm going to borrow a friend's external Mercer USB modem. If it
works, I might considder saving up to buy my own.

Question: how do I edit the Makefile file in my modem driver directory. I
see there is a reference to the linux-kernel there, and in stead of typing $
make KERNEL_ path to root I could possibly put that path directly
into the Makefile.

I really thank you for your help on this akward problem. Any wisdom will do,
and I am definitely learnign a lot. When I finally get it right, I will make
sure that I help other people to do it as well.

 HI again

Sorry to take so long getting back to you, but I been a little
 busy.

When logged in as root I looked at aRTs settings in KDE control
center. aRTs was turned off, so I turned it back on and got this
error message when trying to apply the new settings.

 Something like this:

 Error while initializing sound driver.

device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or
 directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device

I left the new settings in place and rebooted to see, on the off
chance, hoping maybe it would work. But no such luck. I can still
play a music CD through kscd, I can't get xmms to see the CD drive
atm..I'll play with that one later.
I did some investigating through the aRTs controlI have no
default.arts-env file. I am beginning to wonder if I have aRTs
 installed at all.

That's really puzzling. As far as I know, aRts is used by kde-related
apps - which, I would have thought, means kscd - while xmms is, I
believe, a gnome app. Anyone care to comment?

I am beginning to think that I may have to reinstall aRTs, or is there some
way to get KDE to re-recognize that aRTs is installed? Just not sure how to
go about either at the moment.

 Doug Roberts

I am coming awfully late into this thread, but has anyone suggested to Doug
installing the Alsa driver yet? The Yamaha OPL3 is supported by Alsa
according to
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php3?vendor=vendor-Yamaha#matrix

To install the Alsa driver

1/ Install the alsa-utils, alsamixergui, and newt packages (If not already
installed)

2/ Make a backup copy of /etc/modules.conf

3/ In a root terminal run alsaconf
Alsaconf will write a new modules.conf file with the correct settings for your
sound card.

4/ Copy back by hand those lines in the old modules.conf which are not sound
related.

5/ Reboot into the new sound driver, and in KDEControlCentreSoundSoundSystem
set the sound server to Alsa

6/ Use alsamixergui to select default sound levels and save them.

7/ In xmms it may work better if you select the Output Plugin to be alsa.

If it does not work replace the alsaconf generated lines in modules.conf with
the ones from your backup.

When you installed Mandrake you ticked the 'Mail server' box in the 'Install

If you do that Mandrake Installer will install the mailman package which will
screw up Postfix until mailman is correctly configured. To get around it :-

urpme mailman

Then edit your main.cf and remove the references to mailman in :-
alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/aliases, hash:/var/lib/mailman/data/aliases

so it should be :-
alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/aliases

There is also a mistake in your mynetworks line. It should be :-
mynetworks = 192.168.123.0/24, 127.0.0.0/8

You do not need to include your exterior IP address.

You should also edit /etc/aliases to define a real human user who can receive
error mails from postfix as in :-

# Person who should get root's mail. This alias
# must exist.
# CHANGE THIS LINE to an account of a HUMAN
root: troy

Then remake the aliases database with

newaliases

This drove me crazy recently. There is a fix in the 9.2 upgrades that purports

uninstalling mailman and reconfiguring Postfix from my 9.1 backup, probably

*utonto* in perfetto stile Windows.
ripeterli in futuro.

intervenire manualmente solo sulle dimensioni.
esempoio windows.

Penso proprio di no Mauro.

 e subito dopo aggiungere:
 firmware /opt/gt68xx/sbfw.usb

ancora.

Hi,
OK lets usume you use mandrake 9.1 (older versions differ in some respects)
When booting it goes to the user selected on install.
On KDE. Right click on mouse - select logout.
On GNOME select start logout.
Now it goes to where different user may logon
This if you installed more than one user otherwise you will be there only.
Now here is 3 options
1..select other user (NO option for ROOT)
2.. REBOOT - if selected it MAY have a dropdown list to select way of
rebooting. Why I say may - sometimes the dropdown list is empty - if empty
then select HALT.
3 .HALT

If above is all hash - then use* alt - cntrl -del * this will - if it
works reboot.
OR
Open console - su - password - shutdown -r (or -h) now.
If nothing of the above works - sorry beyond my scope
Now this not recommended - switch off.

Also, I can boot to linux, I cannot reboot, shutdown the computer or

Here I am not sure what you mean. How are you trying to reboot/shutdown?
How are you trying to change users? Logout and log back in from the

I use kde as my gui, and logout etcetera is done through the kde menu.

macchina linux (o operazione simile)ti connette normalmente.

Grazie Tom! Aveve perfettamente ragione! Server Art in conflitto!!

in ambiente KDE.

 Ciao, Germano

deve usare arts come server).
accette eventuali correzioni.

Ciao, Germano

Devo utilizzare Scegli dove mettere l'immagine.
In tal caso, dove? In mnt/cdrom2 o /dev/scd0?

I have heard (with no proof though) that sometimes this can happen when the
system has some faulty memory which gets accessed.
If you have 2 or more memory modules, you could try to remove one
temporarily and see if that helps.

It might come to that, Paul, but I'm reluctant as it doesn't happen in any
other app.

OK - I've tied it down a bit more. It always happens if I highlight more
than a few lines. Does that suggest anything?

*insert smart-aleck remark*
Well.. you could always only highlight one line at a time. :)

This is a repeat of an issue we had in here a few months back with a
user that was constantly being knocked back to the KDM/GDM/XDM - and it
turned out to be either session settings or screensaver settings - best
to look for that prior to mucking around with the physical machine.

Either which, if there is a problem with the RAM, you'd know it right
off the bat - the kernel would be choking and puking on that as the
kernel writes to RAM during the boot phase...

I know Althlon 900 is not high spec these days, but it's not that bad. And
with 512 Mb RAM I wouldn't have expected problems.

 Anne

It is more likely a problem with your hardware and the kernel's implementation
of APIC, which is by no means universal in scope yet.

Try booting with linux noapic (esc at the boot screen then type in linux
noapic without the quotes and enter.

If that solves the problem, add a noapic to the append line of each linux
boot in your boot configuration.
