Re: Winder without grip for ME Super?

2001-03-31 Thread Tom Rittenhouse

My MEII winder fires and advances the film when I press the
button. The MX winders I had worked the way you describe, but
the MEII does not. This irked me quite a bit because I used
that feature of the MX winder a lot for street photography.
Snap the pic, hold down the button, walk off, release the button
and wind the film. My MEII winder will not do this.

So far so good. But then you can hold the button down for as long
as you like - the winder won't advance the film until you *release*
the button (assuming, of course, that you have the winder set to
 single-frame mode).

I found two references in the (Dutch) Pentax pricelist:

Code 37244 cable-release FDp for Z1p

Code 37242 cable-release F for ZX/MZ type camera's

This second one is probably the same as reffered to as "cable release F" on
the Pentax K-mount site (BOZ) in the "misc" section at:

http://www.phred.org/pentax/k/

I think the code-number is universal, should be enough to order the thing.
Further, I got a cable-release with my Z1 (almost identical to PZ1p) and
although I think it is the "F" version, it works fine on both the Z1 and the MZ3.

List price is arround US $40

One thing I've liked about the RTF on my PZ-1p is that I've been able to use it on
family snaps without breaking out the AF500FTZ. Makes for a smaller package, and turns
the PZ-1p into a better all-around camera. While it's true I wouldn't use it for

On the MZ-S, of course, it also serves as the transmitter for the wireless TTL flash,
normally something requiring the additional purchase of an accessory. I can't complain

Re: My Website.

2001-03-31 Thread IronWorks

Leon,

You do good work. The pictures are too dark for the standard uncalibrated
monitor, however - you should lighten them. They looked fine when I changed
my monitor gamma to 1.8 but too dark when in Window's default of 2.2. Most
could use some sharpening as well (excepting, of course, the intended
soft-focus for some of the wedding pictures) and, on occasion, better
cropping. I think the young lad on the steps in the wedding series should
have been cropped closer for example. But the picture of the brown cat in
the window was cropped perfectly.

One item of bad news - using IE 5.5 I had no problem navigating the site and
viewing the pictures. Using Opera I got as far as the thumbnails but upon
clicking on the thumbnails the larger image did not appear, only a blank
screen.

center
weighted metering, available with M lenses, is much better
IMO). So I've
learned to meter FA lenses by aiming a bit into the dark side, then
memory
locking, then re-framing. Works very well...
I have a Pz-20, there is no exposure lock.

Also, is the PZ-20's AF similar
to the PZ-1's? (ie; one center focus spot,
and continuous AF with predictive at end when set on servo, and an AF
lock
when the shutter release is 1/2 down, when set on
single?
There is a single AF sensore on the Pz-20 that works like the Pz-1p body
set to single shot, not servo. The AF seems on par with the Pz-1p,
which is very good, but the motor on my Pz-20 is noticeably slower than
the AF motors on my Pz-1p's or Pz-70. (But I bought it used so it
may not be operating properly.)

All in all the Pz-20 is a capable body. I bought one as a backup to my
Pz-1p, have since bought a second Pz-1p.

The main reason for my buying this was spot metering in Manual
mode. For me this was the clincher because I do a fair amount of
shooting in exactly this manner - manual mode with spot meter. But
note that the camera switches to spot metering in manual mode, and there
is no way to override this and there is no way to get spot metering in
any other mode.

While this camera has some more advanced features, like ISO override, the
absence of DOF preview is a major drawback, IMO. I don't know if the
SF-1n has this, but if it does that would put the decision in its favor,
IMO.

Otherwise, the 6 segment auto-metering of the Pz-20 is very very good
(better than the 8 segment auto-metering of the Pz-1p). The program modes
are good, and the Learn function that allows you to customize
the program modes to your specs is a very interesting feature. If you
like shooting in program mode you should look at this feature - since it
virtually allows you to create you own customized program settings.
This body also supports the full power zoom specificication, one of the
few that does.

I hope this helps -

Saw the Aurora Last Night!

2001-03-31 Thread aimcompute

Hi,

I saw the Aurora Borealis for the first time in my life last night. We live
at a latitude of 43 34' N. It was pretty exciting. It was grayish and
had a greenish tinge, vertical rays extending from the horizon. It did
shimmer a little, but it appeared to change before your eyes, without
actually being able to see the change in process. It spanned about 180 of
the horizon and reached to about 20 above the horizon. I had Provia 400F
in the camera and got a number of shots. It lasted from around midnite when
I first saw it to later than 4:00. At 4:00 it had lessened to a thin arced
band, that was like a grayish green shallow rainbow.

I'm hoping the longer exposures, 4 and 8 seconds bring out more of the
green.

The NOAA space weather site lists geomagnetic storms in the last 24 hours as
extreme and currently as strong. I'm going out tonight for sure. It would
be neat if we had a lot of PDML pictures to compare.

I think you took almost the exact same shot (sans ugly bokeh) that

that was taken, so I doubt flare was the cause of that. I have a TC-6

Re: Soft Release for LX

2001-03-31 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

one of the things I like about the Leica M bodies is that the top of
the camera is flush all the way across, except that the shutter
release sticks up by about 1mm within the cup-shaped guard. This is
not only nice aesthetically, it also has the great practical benefit
of being almost impossible to trigger accidentally and therefore
removes the need for a shutter release lock - a beautiful piece of
engineering an example of keeping it simple, imo. I always keep the
camera wound-on and I've never accidentally fired the shutter of the
M3. My worry would be that the soft release, by sitting higher, interferes
with this and would lead to rather a lot of accidental firings. I'd be
interested to hear your experiences when you've had the softie a
while.

As an aside, I think that LX2000, and especially its softie, looks
horrible. A definite case of gilding the lily.

BTW, for Leica and users of other cameras that will take this

because the larger area on which to rest your finger gives a better,
easier, more jar-free release, and the button sits higher than the
 standard release button.

Re: Saw the Aurora Last Night!

2001-03-31 Thread aimcompute

There's a website http://www.ptialaska.net/~hutch/aurora.html with quite a
bit of technical data as well as pictures.

Also http://www.pfrr.alaska.edu/~ddr/ASGP/HANDSON/PHOTOS/INDEX.HTM

The recommendations are rather vague, meaning there's a a lot of variables.
They are recommending an exposure time between 15 - 30 secs. I suspect that
may be with 100 speed film, unpushed, and a fast lens.

I rechecked my camera and I had it loaded with Provia 100F rated at 400. I
exposed at 4 8 secs. If I can see it tonight I'll probably go thru the
range of bracketing with exposures up to 30 secs.

The remote electric shutter release that can be used with the LX Winder
is great. When shooting birds in my yard, I can stand fifteen feet
behind the camera and just click them off. And the shutter seems
smoother when tripped by the winder than it does when tripped with a
standard cable on the shutter release button.

What do you think is wrong with the current FA 135? It's really a
*great* lens, well built, fairly compact, and focuses very close. It's
even good wide open.

The only improvement I could suggest for it would be a more robust
focusing ring, but otherwise I think it's fantastic, and I own some nice
lenses.

Still, I agree that a 80-200/4 would be nice. So would a 100/2. I'm
betting now that Pentax has upgraded (hopefully) the standard zooms with
the 24-90, they'll turn their attention to the tele-zooms.

Hi Cameron,

Comments interspersed:

At 12:50 PM -08003/31/01, Cameron Hood caused thus to appear:
I hope that the Pentax people are listening to us. It is really a drag
to have to wait this long after a product is announced before it even makes
it onto their websight (North American).

I suspect Pentax would have liked to wait until the end of the fiscal year to announce
the MZ-S, but the big shows (photokina and PMA) occur earlier, so they went ahead.
There's been more info on this camera here on the PDML than could probably be managed
on the Pentax USA site.

Also, it would be nice if someone
from the Corporation would come online with us and tell us what plans they
have in the works, whether or not there will be a PZ2, and perhaps a new
flash unit above the current MZ-S unit (which apparently has no bounce
feature?!!?). What are they thinking about?

This will never happen. No company (especially the notoriously tight-lipped Pentax) is
going to go public with detailed plans for far future models. It's like getting on the
Chevrolet list and saying, "I want to buy a car. Tell me what the models are going to
be next year and the year after." Companies need to move the product they have NOW.
Pentax has not even really been showing the MZ-S to many dealers; instead, they've
been writing business for the equipment they have in the warehouses and can deliver
now.

You're a semi-professional. Are you going to tell your clients to wait until you offer
what may be a better photo before hiring you?

Also, we really need some good

The FA135/2.8 is reportedly a sweet lens. Oddly enough, while I was out today I
thought a nice 100-105/2.0 would be nice, then came home to see this email. About the
wonderful FA*80-200/2.8, I have one and it's a phenomenal piece of glass. True, you
=could= get a 67II and wide angle lens for about the same money, but that's not really
a fair comparison. They're radically different tools.

Subject: RTF

2001-03-31 Thread Tanya Russell Mayer

Anthony Farr wrote:

"Was RTF invented by a battery manufacturer? IMO the only merit of RTF is
that it's there. It astounds me that anyone would seriously use one as
their flash unit of choice. They are too close to the lens and cannot be
used off-camera or bounced. Even if they could they would be too weak for
bouncing. What they do well is to spec up the camera and jack up its price.
I wouldn't even consider one as a back-up if my off-camera unit failed,
there'd be another flashgun in my camera trunk (yes I use one of those big
deep aluminium trunks, they carry heaps and make a good seat, work-surface
or substitute stepladder).

The MZ-S would look much more purposeful and professional without that
pissant little RTF on top! What prospective MZ-S owner wouldn't have the
$$$s for a decent flashgun, or even a crappy one? What prospective MZ-S
owner would wish to be seen using such an entry level consumer targeted
gadget on an otherwise professional grade tool?

IMnsHO, RTF is about as useful as tits on a bull."

LOL! Anthony, spoken like a true Aussie! I agree with your view here to a
certain extent. However, it is only recently that I have started to take
photography seriously and for the first 6 months-ish of owning my MZ-50, I
just ran around like a crazy woman taking snap shots of everything I could
find, usually with the camera on "program" and always using the flash if it
said I needed to. I now have two flash guns (albeit crappy Achiever ones
that I am hoping to upgrade to a Pentax 500FTZ and a Metz 45cti (I think
that's the correct model) later this year). So, I do however, think that
having RTF on all camera bodies can be useful for a number of reasons.

a) as a fill flash when shooting candidly outdoors when your baby runs into
a shadow that you weren't anticipating...

b) for candid "family" snaps eg kids opening xmas presents where you don't
want to be lugging around big heavy gear and would prefer to just pick up
your camera and shoot that cute shot.

c) when you are trying to be inconspicuous but need just that little more
"punch" (and don't want to be "punched!)

There are other reasons but those are just a couple off the top of my head.
Also, cameras such as the MZ-50 aren't aimed towards the pro market, so the
inclusion of RTF is almost essential in its marketing.

I do understand your point about the MZ-S though, but can only imagine that
it has been included for the consumer who wants to have the "top of the
line" camera to brag to his friends about, but is still just a "happy
snapper".

Anthony also wrote:

"The MZ-S would look much more purposeful and professional without that
pissant little RTF on top! "

To be honest Anthony, I am not in photography for "appearances" and quite
frankly, I don't give a hoot what my gear looks like. It could be pink and
green with yellow polkadots and as long as it had the features I needed and
assisted me in taking a good photo, I couldn't care less.

:-D

Tanya.

Full moon sky and powerful aurora (of the sort that light up the landscape green)

This month we had Jostein Øksne, Delano Mireles, Gary Murphy,

this month, I might add) coding pages, Jan van Wijk and Yves
Caudano made the thumbnails, and Michael Bromm and myself made

creating some sort of computer sorcery that made the internal

I recently bought a Leica M6. I got a softie for it, just because I
has heard so many good things about it. My impression was exactly
that, with the softie on I had to be extra careful as to where I put
the camera, to avoid accidental firings. Don't even think about
putting it inside a jacket pocket.

And, as an unrelated note, don't even think about putting an M6 in a
jacket pocket and jumping. I dropped my M6 on a stone floor this way,
only 4 days after getting it. It is now in the shop getting a new
rewind knob. Amazingly, the rangefinder, meter and shutter were
intact, as well as the lens that was on the camera at that moment.

I suspect that Pentax answer to the 2.8 wide angle zooms is the forthcoming 18/2.8. I
also suspect that the next 2.8 zoom lenses to come are the 24-90's. I would stay away
in general from zooms that goes below 20mm; what you want in a zoom lens like this is
close focusing capabilities and lack of flare. These zooms gives you neither.

Subject: I really dont like Hoya HMC filters....... Now

2001-03-31 Thread Tanya Russell Mayer

Personally, I have never had any problems with Hoya filters, except for
one - the Softener(B). Personally, rather than just "softening" a shot, I
feel that it makes it look washed out, almost to a point of being
over-exposed. As a few others mentioned previously, the most tried and true
method of creating a softening or diffusing filter is to wrap nylon stocking
over the lens. An alternative that I have used and prevents vignetting is
to get a larger piece of the pantihose or tulle, whichever you choose to
use, and stretch it between a craft loop (don't know if that's what its
called but that's what i am calling it!) - one of those circular frames that
women (and men if they choose! hehe) use to hold their fabric in place for
embroidery. You can then hold this in front of the lens as you shoot. Some
of you may not like this idea as it means you need to use both hands
however, I love the flexibility it gives. Obviously this can only be done
when using a tripod and probably a cable release, so it wouldn't be suited
to every situation, but it has on many occasions allowed me to shoot, one
shot with softener, one shot without, repose the model, shoot again with it,
shoot again without etc. So as soon as I get the prints back, I can compare
the effect and choose which one I would prefer (ie with softener or
without), rather than look at the prints and think "geez, i wish I'd used a
softener" or "geez, i wish I hadn't used a softener" etc

Hope this helps and at least makes some sense - I know I can be very
long-winded at times! (Typical woman, you see! Well, so my hubby says...)

:-)

Tanya.

 Bob,

 [snip]
My personal experience is that a roll of
PJC1600, not in camera, withstood 4 passes through these X-ray machines
 (plus on year in
the back of a Toyota Supra in the California sun) and still produced the
 photo below.

Very nice night shot! Is that the Yorkville near Santa Rosa? What lens, f
 stop and
shutter speed, only if you remember. PJC1600 looks like a nice film, not
 very much
 grain at all.

There was actually one made for the LX. I've only seen one pass by on ebay.
I understand it's very rare.

I've just taken delivery of Tom Abrahamsson's soft release for the
Leica http://www.rapidwinder.com/2.htm, which is supposed to fit
other cameras that use a standard cable release. The soft release
works on all my Pentax bodies except the LX - which is the one I
most wanted to use it for. Does anyone know if there's a soft
release button that will fit the LX?

BTW, for Leica and users of other cameras that will take this
button, it really helps. The shutter operation seems to be smoother
because the larger area on which to rest your finger gives a better,
easier, more jar-free release, and the button sits higher than the
 standard release button.

PUG Gallery comments

2001-03-31 Thread Chris Brogden

http://www.pug.komkon.org/

The PUG Gallery for this month has been unveiled, and it's time for
another round of comments! The PUG Gallery Commentators for this month
are Adelheid, Shel Belinkoff, Sid Barras, Tom Cakalic, Yves Caudano,
Gerald Cermak, John Cohen, Donna Lynn Crain, Bruce Dayton, Bill Johnson,
Paul Harvey, Gianfranco Irlanda, Lasse Karlsson, Jaume Lahuerta, Maris
V. Lidaka, Sr., Csar Matamoros II, Luis Pinar, Rapture, Skip, Paul
Stenquist, Frank Theriault, and Jan van Wijk.

For the commentators: I have just sent you each an e-mail off-list letting
you know which photos to talk about. If it doesn't arrive in the next day
or so, please let me know and I'll mail it to you again. If you're no
longer able to comment on photos this month, please let me know
ASAP. Otherwise, have fun, and we look forward to seeing what you have to
say. :)

For everyone else who's not a commentator, don't let that stop you from
talking about photos! The whole idea between having a bunch of people
commit to talking about a few photos each month is that it makes sure that
each photo gets at least one comment. But having more than one is even
better, so feel free to pick a few pictures and talk about them on the
list.

Thanks, too, to Bill and to everyone else who slaved away so Bill could
sit on his big fat... er... Pentax... and run the show. Good job!

LX vs P1-zp vs Spotmatic

2001-03-31 Thread petit miam

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I pulled out my Spotmatic SP (with broken
lightmeter) and caressed it lovingly. I had forgotten
about a few things I took for granted that my MZ-30
doesn't have. The Spotmatic will always be my baby
(sorry Mariah Carey).
1. The manual focus screen - My MZ-30 only has the
outline of a square in the viewfinder which is about
as helpful as trying to focus through frosted glass.
And I have discovered I prefer manual focus. I take
lots of closeups with my close-up filters and
auto-focus doesn't work at all.
2. That wonderful feeling of winding on the film by
hand - nothing beats it and my MZ-30 is auto-wind.
3. I love the feel of the leather half-case in my
hands.
4. The lightmeter needle. I can't get used to these
LEDs.

So I am thinking of getting an LX as well, and trying
to get my Spotmatic fixed. I know no.1 above is
covered, but what about no.2? I don't expect to get
no.3, but that would be a bonus.

And I also hear lots about the P1-zp. I know nothing
about this camera. What does it have going for it? The
LX and P1-zp seem to have their separate fan-clubs. I
don't think I have heard from anyone who raves about
both.

Please help.
Jody.

Free camera for me.

2001-03-31 Thread petit miam

WOW

The Reader's Digest wants to give me a "free" camera
for being such a good customer :) It is a Cypréa brand
camera with Panoramic and Normal modes, no zoom.

They have chopped it up into bits. They have sent the
strap to tease me. If I buy another condensed book
they send the leather pouch, and the next book, they
send the camera. A bit like the kidnappers sending one
finger at a time. Sounds like an offer too good to
refuse. But I do want a few condensed books anyway.

I'll probably be forced to give it away to someone who
doesn't care about photo quality. But maybe it would
be good for panorama shots when the quality doesn't
matter. I will see.

Jody.
