If you have handled the 18-35, it feels very similar, but is quite a bit larger, but not very heavy. The zoom feels like running a fork through mashed peas (I didn't like the feel of the zoom). Hi Shaun, on 18 May 04 you wrote in pentax.list: >Has anybody got/used the new 16-45mm DA F4.0? What do we know about it? I've used it. It is a really good lens. Very sharp, no CA problems (at least I didn't notice one) and good built quality. It's plastic, but feels better than a FA 24-90. The optical quaity is comparable with that of the 24-90 and much better than that of the 18-35. And - 16mm are nice wideangle for your *istD. I would have bought it, but I'm waiting to see the first results of the smc-DA 14 as it might be a better addition to my 24-90. Cheers, Heiko

But it seemes, that the reflection of the CCD differs depending on the chosen ISO setting. The exposure will be correct only at ISO400 as the development and testing of the TTL-measurement was apparently made at ISO400, only. At ISO settings below 400 the camera will under-expose, at setting above 400 it will over-expose.(*) This problem can probably not be solved by a firmware update as there is no upgradeble TTL-software but some kind of hardware solution. The problem does not exist if you use P-TTL. -- (*) In the meanwhile I could confirm this behaviour. Maybe changing to ISO400 will solve you problem. Hope it helps... Cheers, Heiko

Please recommend your repairman/shop-- K2 electrical problems
Hi group, I have two very nice K2s that show similar problems: when the metering switch (the shutter release pushed halfway down) is engaged, the meter needle slams down to the bottom of the scale-- and won't give a proper exposure. One of them the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it works fine, and when it doesn't, sometimes a "shake" or a light "tap" against the palm of my hand will get it working again. Sounds very much like an electrical problem, eh? These guys are in near pristine condition, hardly worthy of the junk heap... But, I sent one of them to a place in San Antonio last year, and they weren't able to fix what appears to need a very good, experienced repairman who knows these cameras, (or at least electronic workings of cameras of this era -mid 1970s) Maybe it needs parts that can't be obtained, but my feeling is that this is an electrical "short" of some kind that initially needs someone who can accurately diagnose the problem-- It could be something as simple as an unsoldered joint, a wire touching the frame that shouldn't be; and, of course, it could be a component that needs replacing that can't be gotten... Unless I rob the part from one of the chrome users that I have... So, as I see it, it is too soon to declare these beautiful cameras "done for" until I know for sure what is wrong with them. Can anyone please recommend their "wizard, crack, ace (insert proper adjective here) repairman? Greetings from CajunLand USA South Louisiana Sid Barras
RE: photo opinion wanted
Hi ... Well, the bokeh is quite harsh, the reason notwithstanding, and it fights the great lines and shape of the flamingo. The colors are way too saturated for my taste. Legs are nice to see in their entirety. There's a pink wing tip intruding into the frame on the viewer's right. Big distraction. Nothing that can't be fixed. Overall, it's not a bad start. Nope. I'll shoot with a digital, but it'll be in colour. Black and white is for film. With names like Tri X, HP5+, Pan X, APX, Neopan. Yup. Scan sucks. On the print, one can clearly read the back of the dog's sweater: "Queen's University", which is the university in Kingston, Ontario, where this photo was taken. I was in the candy store with my daughter Claire - do we sense a pattern here? BTW, neg was wy overexposed in the background; I was metering off the girl/dog, and that was pretty much nailed. But, with the late day sun streaming in through those windows, the background was very very bright. The lab did a wonderful job burning the background to make it more acceptable than I had a right to expect. Thanks for the comments, Shel (and everyone else). It was nice to have a camera where I could fire off three quick ones before the scene was lost, and she never heard a thing. cheers, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. Re: Anyone using an Image Tank?
Mark, check discussions on dpreview. Apparently you get what you pay for with these. People have trouble, documentation is poor, little support, not compatible with newer cf cards, etc. I found similar discussions when I looked up the inexpensive Jobo product a few days ago. I won't trust images to something like this. Adorama's image tank is a bit more expensive ($229 or so, IIRC), but there is a real bricks-and-mortar company behind it. That said, I haven't tried it or looked for discussions of it. Joe

I recall that the latest fatty from them is some sort of digital hybrid, that takes film or digital depending on what back is in use. Vivitar 6000 AF Macro Flash: All TTL exposures so far seem fine. All tests were done at ISO 200. I am disappointed with the performance of the AF 400T because I like this flash. Bruce Dayton reports good performance with it on the *ist D. Bruce, what am I doing wrong? Has anyone gotten consistently good TTL results with any flash on the *ist D? RE: Anyone still using Windows ME?
KEEP DREAMING!!! The whole point of 35mm was convenience, convenience, and more convenience. Digital out does the convenience factor by about a hundred miles. And the beauty of digital is the ease of integrating it into an editing pipeline. No, 35mm film is going the way of the dodo, it will be used by collectors and a few stubborn individuals for many years to come, but it is for all intents and purposes, well on its way out. And to be honest, it's not a big loss, digital has a much, much higher ceiling. Eventually we will have large format sized images in 35mm bodies. Why use inferior 35mm film then??? Real-world side by side comparisons show that the best 6MP DSLR's are already the equal of 35mm provia film. The theoretical mumbo jumbo about how 35mm film is 50MP blah blah blah, its all a bunch of hootenanny, lies, and BS. Fact is DSLR's have already equaled and surpassed 35mm film. Its done for, there will be no resurgence. -Shawn -Original Message- From: Antonio Aparicio [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 17, 2004 5:57 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Anyone still using WIndows ME? OT: More GFM Planning
Well, much to my surprise, there's actually a bus from Toronto to Pittsburg. Who'd a thunk it? But, there is! And, at a price that is way cheaper than any other mode of public transportation, AFAIC. The best option for me is taking the overnight bus. Leaves Toronto at around 11pm, gets into Pittsburg a bit before noon the next day. I'll leave Tuesday night (so I can work on Tuesday), spend a couple of hours exploring Pittsburg, then go meet Mark once he's done work, and we're on our way!! I'm guessing that his Hyundai will be more comfortable than my Grayhound, so I'll likely be nodding off much of the way. Staying at a friend of Mark's on the way down, and ETA to GFM is Thursday morning. Did I mention the following?: WOO FREAKING HOOO!!! cheers, frank ps: have no idea what the schedule of returning buses is; right now, don't really care... -ft "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. Re: Antonio please stop it now!
My point is that one should be able to disagree in a debate without having to go out of ones way to be "friendly" with those one is debating with. Which is not to say you should be hostile necessarily (although there is a time and a place like anything). It should be taken as read that we are all colleagues and respect each others opinions. Polite discussions, like polite society can self-censor to the extent that a lot of the interesting stuff gets not discussed. Photography would be boring to say the least if one where barred from taking pictures that make others feel uncomfortable, or which did not challenge the viewer. Each ommatidium points in a slighly different direction (imagine a ball covered with spikes), and the black 'pupil-looking thing' is where you're seeing right down to the bottom of a few ommatidium (here it's black, of course, because the pigments here are *made* to absorb light!), the red/[insert particular insect eye colour here] is the sides of the ommatidia - these aren't facing you/the camera. As you might know by now, Markus, I'm a people photographer (among other things), so that's likely why I appreciated your decision to point your camera away from the track and tell us the stories of some of the people involved: kids, parents, organizers - again, it was a wonderful documentary of the day! As for Claire and warheads, well, we've had them many times since; we both like them a lot. After the initial intense sourness, which only last for about 15 seconds or so, they become rather sweet. Interesting shot, the extreme foreground on the left is distracting, its too bright and too dominating. I would turn the camera to the right and include more sky, or frame the woman more to the left. The right half of the picture is very dynamic, the left half is just a large wall, it's not being activated properly by the composition. -Shawn -Original Message- From: Frantisek Vlcek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 17, 2004 7:42 AM To: PDML Subject: PAW - News by the wall News by the wall, http://fotof.wz.cz/paw A grab shot on the street. RE: PAW - News by the wall
Very, very interesting. So many interpretations! It's that wall, of course. I really like the proportions and perspective of it. At first blush, it seemed to overwhelm, almost dwarf the newspaper reader. That bothered me at first, but now I like it. It made me wonder about the wall. What's it there for? What's it about? Made me think of the Wailing Wall, the Berlin Wall, the wall surrounding a prison (with her on the outside, not the inside). (I don't really want answers to these questions, they're just what I was thinking about as I looked at it. Why's she facing the wall? Aesthetically, the only criticism (well, not so much a criticism as a comment) is that I think it might look even better in black and white. I find the wall's brown-ness a bit blah, and it takes my mind off of the structure and essence of the whole photo. But, it is what it is, and it is a wonderful photo, imho! thanks, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true." -J. RE: Image hosting for PAW etc?
Hi, Peter, I use photo.net. 100 free photo uploads, no size restriction that I'm aware of, critique requests available, lots of forums to participate in (which I don't, 'cause with PDML, who has time), lots of interesting articles and columns and opinions. For I think $25 US a year, you can become a member, and have unlimited photo uploads. You can organize your photos into folders, which I like (I keep a separate one for all my PAWs). What I don't like is that lately, their site has been down for days at a time. Hasn't happened for a couple of months now (they seemed to be having problems back then, but they seem solved now). Also, they can be a bit slow to get into at times; maybe it's a traffic thing, I don't know. Other than the last thing, they're pretty good, and I would recommend them; a fine photographic resource.
