Used it.
It's big, but not heavy. If you have handled the 18-35, it feels very
similar, but is quite a bit larger, but not very heavy. The zoom
feels like running a fork through mashed peas (I didn't like the feel
of the zoom).
It seems like it is a good lens optically though. I didn't see
anything wonky in the pictures I took.

I've used it. It is a really good lens. Very sharp, no CA problems (at
least I didn't notice one) and good built quality. It's plastic, but
feels better than a FA 24-90. The optical quaity is comparable with that
of the 24-90 and much better than that of the 18-35. And - 16mm are nice
wideangle for your *istD. I would have bought it, but I'm waiting to see
the first results of the smc-DA 14 as it might be a better addition to
my 24-90.

2004-05-17 Thread Dr. Heiko Hamann
Hi Joe,

on 17 May 04 you wrote in pentax.list:

That should be the problem. I wrote (some months ago):

--
There's a German thread on incorrect flash exposures at
http://www.digitalfotonetz.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4997&highlight=

A source at Pentax Germany has explained that there exists a problem
with the TTL-metering (I only repeat some statements of the mentioned
link): The TTL-sensor measures the light that is reflected from the
CCD's surface. But it seemes, that the reflection of the CCD differs
depending on the chosen ISO setting. The exposure will be correct only
at ISO400 as the development and testing of the TTL-measurement was
apparently made at ISO400, only.

At ISO settings below 400 the camera will under-expose, at setting above
400 it will over-expose.(*)

This problem can probably not be solved by a firmware update as there is
no upgradeble TTL-software but some kind of hardware solution. The
problem does not exist if you use P-TTL.

(*) In the meanwhile I could confirm this behaviour.

Maybe changing to ISO400 will solve you problem. Hope it helps...

Please recommend your repairman/shop-- K2 electrical problems

2004-05-17 Thread Sid Barras
Hi group,
I have two very nice K2s that show similar problems: when the metering
switch (the shutter release pushed halfway down) is engaged, the meter
needle slams down to the bottom of the scale-- and won't give a proper
exposure. One of them the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it works
fine, and when it doesn't, sometimes a "shake" or a light "tap" against
the palm of my hand will get it working again. Sounds very much like an
electrical problem, eh?

These guys are in near pristine condition, hardly worthy of the junk
heap... But, I sent one of them to a place in San Antonio last year,
and they weren't able to fix what appears to need a very good,
experienced repairman who knows these cameras, (or at least electronic
workings of cameras of this era -mid 1970s)

Maybe it needs parts that can't be obtained, but my feeling is that
this is an electrical "short" of some kind that initially needs someone
who can accurately diagnose the problem-- It could be something as
simple as an unsoldered joint, a wire touching the frame that shouldn't
be; and, of course, it could be a component that needs replacing that
can't be gotten... Unless I rob the part from one of the chrome users
that I have...

So, as I see it, it is too soon to declare these beautiful cameras
"done for" until I know for sure what is wrong with them.

Can anyone please recommend their "wizard, crack, ace (insert proper
adjective here) repairman?

Greetings from CajunLand USA South Louisiana

Hi ...

Well, the bokeh is quite harsh, the reason notwithstanding, and it fights
the great lines and shape of the flamingo. The colors are way too
saturated for my taste. Legs are nice to see in their entirety. There's a
pink wing tip intruding into the frame on the viewer's right. Big
distraction. Nothing that can't be fixed. Overall, it's not a bad start.

The Canon comes with a pretty cheap lens though.

If she compared it with a good lens the difference would be much less.

B&H sells the Canon 17-40/4 lens for $650 after rebate. The 300D is
$900. That is $1550 in total, or $1300 for the Pentax *ist D with a
similar quality lens (although the Pentax goes wider and longer) and
better quality body.

Batteries for the *ist D are much cheaper too.

I think it would have benefited from a slightly different angle to
accentuate the curvature of the neck. I like it though and the timing is
really good. That's some wacky bokeh. You may want to create another layer
and blur it a bit.

RE: Word on New Digitals?

If I had no lenses already, I would go for canon. They
have a much better AF lens lineup. The only reason to go
with pentax is if you have a bunch of Pentax lenses, but
like idiots they crippled the K mount negating the incentive
to buy pentax for a lot of people.

Alex,

You're right about it being the better choice, but this is difficult
for me to explain to her. The Canon comes with a lens for 999, while
the Pentax is 1300 with the lens counting the rebates.

Yup. Scan sucks.
On the print, one can clearly read the back of the dog's sweater: "Queen's
University", which is the university in Kingston, Ontario, where this photo
was taken. I was in the candy store with my daughter Claire - do we sense a
pattern here?

BTW, neg was wy overexposed in the background; I was metering off the
girl/dog, and that was pretty much nailed. But, with the late day sun
streaming in through those windows, the background was very very bright.
The lab did a wonderful job burning the background to make it more
acceptable than I had a right to expect.

Thanks for the comments, Shel (and everyone else). It was nice to have a
camera where I could fire off three quick ones before the scene was lost,
and she never heard a thing.

cheers,
frank

Re: Anyone using an Image Tank?

Mark, check discussions on dpreview. Apparently you get what you pay for
with these. People have trouble, documentation is poor, little support,
not compatible with newer cf cards, etc. I found similar discussions
when I looked up the inexpensive Jobo product a few days ago.

I won't trust images to something like this.
Adorama's image tank is a bit more expensive ($229 or so, IIRC), but
there is a real bricks-and-mortar company behind it. That said, I
haven't tried it or looked for discussions of it.

I'm interested in this question also. My AF400FTZ is OK in basic TTL

of different ways of doing it).

I've considered buying the AF360FGZ but it isn't powerful enough for my

Hi Cotty,
I doubt it. There will be an SLR rennaisance at some point no doubt. My
fingers would be crossed for an anniversary LX.

Nikon and Canon have both stated that they are getting out of the film SLR
game entirely. Konica may keep a Minolta film SLR or two around, since they
have a vested interest in film sales.
Or, they may not.
Lord only knows what Leica will do, perhaps put another of those fat German
girls on the block.
Or perhaps not. I recall that the latest fatty from them is some sort of
digital hybrid, that takes film or digital depending on what back is in use.
Kodak film sales are down close to 58% over this time last year, Fuji is not
far behind (PMA numbers, not mine).
Agfa is getting out of film. If they can't sell their film division, I
expect they will just close it.
Noritsu has produced it's last optical printer, I expect Fuji has as well,
and Noritsu is putting no more resources into improving film scanning
technology at the lab level.
The present generation of digital minilabs is about a 2000x3000 pixel 8 bit
per colour channel scan density.
This is as good as it will get for production printing of film.
You go ahead, cross your fingers, hold your breath till you turn blue.
Film is going away, sooner rather than later, most likely.
I think the LX 2000 was the "anniversary LX".
I doubt very much if there will be another high end film SLR from Pentax.
For that matter, I have pretty strong doubts there will be another film SLR
from anyone.

-1.0 EV, better still
Ceiling bounce: overall exposure is better, nearly okay.
Vivitar 6000 AF Macro Flash: All TTL exposures so far seem fine.
All tests were done at ISO 200.
I am disappointed with the performance of the AF 400T because I like

Tan, you are missing all the fun being so obliging

This is supposed to be like one of those favorite

Just from the responses so far one can note that
the favorites appear to
be pepperoni, sausage or plain and least favorites
anchovies and olives.

now we will take this data and correlate it with

RE: Anyone still using Windows ME?

2004-05-17 Thread Shawn K.
KEEP DREAMING!!! The whole point of 35mm was convenience, convenience, and
more convenience. Digital out does the convenience factor by about a
hundred miles. And the beauty of digital is the ease of integrating it into
an editing pipeline. No, 35mm film is going the way of the dodo, it will be
used by collectors and a few stubborn individuals for many years to come,
but it is for all intents and purposes, well on its way out. And to be
honest, it's not a big loss, digital has a much, much higher ceiling.
Eventually we will have large format sized images in 35mm bodies. Why use
inferior 35mm film then??? Real-world side by side comparisons show that
the best 6MP DSLR's are already the equal of 35mm provia film. The
theoretical mumbo jumbo about how 35mm film is 50MP blah blah blah, its all
a bunch of hootenanny, lies, and BS. Fact is DSLR's have already equaled
and surpassed 35mm film. Its done for, there will be no resurgence.

My point is that one should be able to disagree in a debate without
having to go out of ones way to be "friendly" with those one is
debating with. Which is not to say you should be hostile necessarily
(although there is a time and a place like anything). It should be
taken as read that we are all colleagues and respect each others
opinions. Polite discussions, like polite society can self-censor to
the extent that a lot of the interesting stuff gets not discussed.
Photography would be boring to say the least if one where barred from
taking pictures that make others feel uncomfortable, or which did not
challenge the viewer.

the
cars was so slow it would not have been visible
and quite boring on photos.
On the other side, with the manual focusing camera and the A70-210mm zoom I
was thankful for the quieter moments ;-)

sourness?

RE: PAW - News by the wall

2004-05-17 Thread Shawn K.
Interesting shot, the extreme foreground on the left is distracting, its
too bright and too dominating. I would turn the camera to the right and
include more sky, or frame the woman more to the left. The right half of
the picture is very dynamic, the left half is just a large wall, it's not
being activated properly by the composition.

RE: PAW - News by the wall

2004-05-17 Thread frank theriault
Very, very interesting. So many interpretations!
It's that wall, of course. I really like the proportions and perspective of
it. At first blush, it seemed to overwhelm, almost dwarf the newspaper
reader. That bothered me at first, but now I like it. It made me wonder
about the wall.

What's it there for? What's it about? Made me think of the Wailing Wall,
the Berlin Wall, the wall surrounding a prison (with her on the outside, not
the inside). (I don't really want answers to these questions, they're just
what I was thinking about as I looked at it.

Why's she facing the wall?
Aesthetically, the only criticism (well, not so much a criticism as a
comment) is that I think it might look even better in black and white. I
find the wall's brown-ness a bit blah, and it takes my mind off of the
structure and essence of the whole photo. But, it is what it is, and it is
a wonderful photo, imho!

thanks,
frank

RE: transporting my kit... GFM stuff

2004-05-17 Thread TMP

Thanks heaps for the very generous offer Ann!

However, I am not actually sure if I will make it to NYC now at all. I have
to be in DC, on the 30th May, 1st June and the 3rd June, so PERHAPS I could
make a rushed trip but I am not sure on train schedules etc so I will play
it by ear.

BTW, in regards to "thrifting". We call it "op shopping" and I am a MASTER
at it! In fact, I would LOVE to do some in the US - particularly for
clothes for my kids, so if anyone has any suggestions for the best places to
go in LA (not Rodeo Drive thanks very much! lol), DC, or POSSIBLY NYC,I
would very much appreciate it!

I have lots of jeans, T shirts, etc, that will be

I'll be leaving on JUne 1st for a friends place in

RE: Image hosting for PAW etc?

2004-05-17 Thread frank theriault
Hi, Peter,
I use photo.net. 100 free photo uploads, no size restriction that I'm aware
of, critique requests available, lots of forums to participate in (which I
don't, 'cause with PDML, who has time), lots of interesting articles and
columns and opinions.

For I think $25 US a year, you can become a member, and have unlimited photo
uploads.

You can organize your photos into folders, which I like (I keep a separate
one for all my PAWs).

What I don't like is that lately, their site has been down for days at a
time. Hasn't happened for a couple of months now (they seemed to be having
problems back then, but they seem solved now). Also, they can be a bit slow
to get into at times; maybe it's a traffic thing, I don't know.

Other than the last thing, they're pretty good, and I would recommend them;
a fine photographic resource.

HTH,
frank

There seem to be a huge number of options, no doubt each has its own

My husband has the 20 Gig Archos Gmini. It is about $250. It is said to
offload about 5-6 gig on one charge. It takes about 12 minutes to empty
a 1 gig card. It also plays mp3s, so you can carry music with you and
have an image tank handy if you want.

The MZ-S is destined for classic status, though. Truly a gem and bit

Hi Jostein, thanks a lot! I did use Google, but never stumbled on that
page. Perhaps I badly phrased the query though. All I found was a link
to old MS-DOS version which wouldn't run on Windows computer. I still
have a Win32 emulator of an x86 machine, effectively running all the
old games and apps which were written in the age of 286, but I thought
it (with its speed, well, pretty slow on my box) it would be better to
try to find a native Win32 version. Which I couldn't.

So thanks! A lot.

Nevermind then. But as far as I know, the rest of the info holds -
PayPal has no affiliate in Russian Federatin, therefore your "pal"
cannot withdraw paypal payment. Except the skullduggery types of
sending money hidden in the stuffing of an envelope (see Cotty's ?

because they are pretty expensive but I used them in a pinch. And I
certainly know that lot of people from Russia/... working semi-legally
in the EU use WU to send their money home. I would even think it's the
main revenuce of WU here. From experience from friends dealing with
Russian Federation, just sending money in an envelope isn't safe.
Well, it isn't safe even in our country, and we are member of European
