Re: Really annoying new behavior
Yes, the PDML is something of an anomaly in this regard. The mailman settings strongly recommend reply to sender. It certainly cuts down on list traffic, but since our little community thrives on group sharing, I think reply to list is warranted. Re: Really annoying new behavior
I have not changed the list settings, PJ. I don't know if Thunderbird has done something new without looking at their release notes, but "reply list" works fine. If necessary, I can set the software to only include the list address, stripping out the original sender address, but we've run OK without that for many years, and it may wonk up some users' reply settings. Re: OT: Blue Apron
Dan, my wife signed us up for Blue Apron a while back. At first it was a kind of adventure and we looked forward to it bringing a little variety to our meals. None of us are really inspired when it comes to meals we have to cook ourselves. We're busy people who lean toward food as a necessary duty rather than as a creative expression and we tend to fall back on habit, to cooking the same few dishes. It should also be noted that we are not equipped with many kitchen skills either, so the cheery estimates regarding the time it would take to prep, provided by Blue Apron, had to be inflated greatly to compensate for the relatively long times it took us to get through all the steps. It should also be noted that when I write "we," you can assume it means "me," because I work at home and have, apparently, a whole lot of free time. We began with three meals a week, I think, or was it four? I don't recall. All I know is that my kitchen became a sort of exotic foods warehouse two or three times a week, with deliveries and distribution taking precedence over all else in my day before I ever began the tasks required to combine the ingredients into a finished meal. And speaking of ingredients, Blue Apron has exploded in the field of meal delivery, so much so that they were cranking out boxes of stuff at an alarming rate to meet demand, so frequently they'd screw up and leave out some small but pivotal ingredient, forcing us to search through everything multiple times in a futile attempt to locate said ingredient and to try to mimic its effect on the meal with whatever we had on hand. To be fair, the meals were typically very good, if a little redundant, and paid off the effort for the most part. There were some duds, of course, but more often they'd satisfy us. I should mention the squash. I am not and have never been a squash guy, and it seemed that every meal was curiously squash-centric after a while, and had such breezily benign instructions as, "peel and chop the squash into one inch cubes." I don't know how much you've worked with squashes, but most of them are roughly the consistency of diamonds, and peeling one takes engineering and tools I do not have at my disposal. Finally what killed it for us (me) was neither the stress of attempting to replicate the perfection of the included photos, or even the squash. It was the time investment. I had to block out hours of my day to prep and lash together a meal that lasted at most fifteen minutes before we had to be somewhere else. The responses were generally positive, though. Is summary, we tried it and it was fun for a bit, but it eventually wore thin and we went back to what we do best, which is to throw together something out of a panicked assessment of the pantry and a silent vow to upgrade our available choices next time. I dunno, though. You may like it. On 4/2/17 10:16 AM, Daniel J. Matyola wrote: Does anyone use Blue Apron, or one of the competing food services? Brian, First, thank you for your continued attention and effort to keep the PUG running. I owe, indeed we all owe, a great deal of gratitude to all the PUGmeisters who have served over the last twenty years, and to Igor and Komkon for the space. As you know, web years are tallied differently than real years, and the long life of the PUG is a genuine rarity in the online world, something of which we can all be proud of having accomplished. That the PUG has always been about where we are as photographers in this moment, rather than a competition or otherwise curated, is even more rare, and should be noted. Do you have a target date in mind for publishing the anniversary edition? I thought I might drop a note to Mike Johnston over at The Online Photographer to tell him about the anniversary. Re: And an annual happy birthday to everyone
The first PUG was indeed revealed on April 1, 1997, on some of my personal server space, later transferred to the komkon server. It was just a few photos and each page was coded separately using my clunky HTML skills. In fact, for quite some time each gallery had to be coded, which explains the long gaps between some of them, leading to some grumblings in the ranks, which came to a head when I was in Little Rock, Arkansas, prepping for my mother's funeral in January of 1999. It was determined that I had my time priorities out of whack and I was booted from my post as first PUGmaster. All this was before I took over The List from Pentax, which happened during the Christmas/New Year transition from 2000 to 2001. Hey Bruce, thanks. The more I look into it, the more I think you're right that homemade is the way to go. Re: Lightroom renaming question
Sorry if the video doesn't meet your needs, Larry, but it does address John's question, which is why I posted it. Addressing your original question, I'm thinking Jostein is on the right path. I could easily rename the files in the command line with something like the below (the syntax is wrong, but the intent should be clear) using regular expressions for name in (20160806-LRC)000(*) mv $name (\1)100(\2) end unfortunately, this would do nothing but just confuse lightroom and I'd have to go through one by one, for 66 files. As to the video, I absolutely hate the fact that Adobe has converted all of their documentation to those nearly useless time wasting annoyances that make you spend several minutes trying to find a simple piece of information that you should be able to find by scanning a simple page of text for five seconds. It wouldn't be so bad if they would simply post a copy of their script. If they wanted to be really helpful, they'd post the script with timestamps for the start of each section. As far as I can tell there is almost nothing in that video that I didn't already know. Sure fifteen minutes isn't a lot of time, at least in geological terms, but I don't have hours to go wading through all of those videos every time I have a question, trying to find one that actually answers it. Re: HTML testing
Looking into it in more depth reveals that allowing HTML through Mailman (our list software) entails suspending content filtering, which then allows file attachments through. I am hesitant to remove the filtering, imagining all sorts of trouble with attachments, not least of which would be the open invitation to send malicious content. It is of course possible to migrate to a more HTML-friendly software, but doing so would involve another learning curve I'm not sure I'm willing to experience, since Mailman serves our purposes quite well and has done since I took over, with the occasional hiccup. Note that this is not list policy I'm talking about, but rather my personal preference. Merits some in-depth viewing. 1. A private moment captured, love the way the shadows in the reflections surround her. 2. Very soft and low key image mocking the billboard pose. Almost surreal. Very tranquil feeling. 3. Superb picture, a favourite. Nice use of square format, love the patterns and contrast between the almost silhouetted foreground and the high key and hazy background. 4. Simple and effective portrait study with a delightful splash of light on the face. I like images like this with a main subject and a number 2 in the frame - your eye starts on the face and then darts off to see the lamp, then immediately back on the face for more in-depth viewing. 5. Funicular railway at night - wouldn't be the same without the girl walking up alongside. Blur and contrast gives it immediacy and 'happening' qualities. 6. Another portrait, this time a haphazard collection in the frame, lots of interest that keeps circling around and back to the face. 7. High contrast silhouettes and shadows. Graphic image we all know. 8. Really delicate portrait of a beautiful woman. Love the focal planes in this and the deep shadows contrasting the gentle swathe of light on her face. A knowing smile adds delight. 9. Mysterious low key urban street scene - could be anywhere warm. I can hear the dog barking out of sight, the distant radio. Very atmospheric. 10. Absolutely great photograph here - my other favourite. Charming pose with just the right amount of face. Love the contrasting patterns between her hair and the wood slats, the shirt and the wooden board. Beautiful qualities and a beautiful model - what's not to like? Okay, now I see what you guys are saying about the K5ii. It doesn't seem to be much more expensive than the original K5, depending on where you look. Thanks for all the advice. Re: My K-7 is dying
It's really not all that confusing. If I'm going to push up around the $500-$600 level, I'd probably rather get the X100S, because I'd just like to have one. If I don't reach up there, the K5 seems to be a good deal. KEH has a couple in the $300-$350 range. All that said, I'm torn. I do like the K7 and my glass and don't know if I want to lose that option. On the other hand, I shoot much more with my X100 than I do the K7, and the X100S is a sweet upgrade, especially for how I'm shooting now. Thanks for all the answers, folks. Christine, I'll probably pass on the K7, though I sure appreciate it. If I get another camera, I'd like it to be an upgrade. The K7 has been a great camera for me, even though according to the internet you can't get a decent photo out of it. I seem to have done all right with one. I didn't keep my K-5 or K-5 II that long but I thought they were BOTH terrific cameras. The K-5 II could autofocus in the dark. I can't help but feel that the IQ of them was better than the K-3/K-3 II, particularly at higher ISOs, even if others contradict me. Mark left out at about 9:15 this morning. Last I saw of him he was filling up at the BP on the corner as I turned toward Lexington. fortunately for Mark, I do very little, so what slack there is to be picked up will be minimal. I doubt my absence will be noticed. Shoot a couple of packs, not just one, as it is quirky and takes a bit of experience to figure out how to set the camera for it. I get a pile of good shots that way, but a smaller pile of special shots. It's true that you must take many photos before you can start getting good ones regularly. Re: facebook post about being the community photographer
On 10/7/13 3:56 AM, Larry Colen wrote: This is somethingt that has been brewing in my mind for a while. I didn't have time to do more than just spew it out, without editing. And it was a real challlenge trying to phrase it as there are people out there doing a lot more work than you realize, and not come across as I do all this stuff for you, what are you going to do for me?. I hope I succeeded. For what it's worth, Larry, I read it both here and on FB. I don't know what it was really about, but what I came away with is the feeling of I do this thing and I want appreciation. I'm sure the people you photograph do appreciate it, especially when you give them photos they can post to Facebook or whatever, but here's the thing; you aimed, in large part, at the event organizers, and your little rant will probably fall on deaf ears, for the following reason. They are not there to make it easy for you to take photographs. They are there to put on a dance, and their energies, by right, will be applied to that end. Anything else is beside the point, including photographers, no matter how good their equipment/skill set may be. If you're that frustrated trying to get photos of the dances, leave the camera in the car. Go and dance. Find a woman who wants to dance, and spend the evening pleasantly. If you want to go take pictures, do that. But remember that your photographic activity ranks pretty low on the agenda. You mentioned here in the thread, among other things, running a mail list. I don't run the PDML in order to be thanked for running the PDML. I run it because it's my feeble way to give back to the community where I've learned so much. The satisfaction I get from doing it is all the appreciation I need. That people are willing to contribute to it financially is not because I run it, but because the members appreciate the community as much as I do, and that is also very satisfactory to me. Finally, it's almost never a good idea to post the first thing that comes into your head, no matter how busy you are. I think you may be coming to realize that. My two cents.
