I take my Leica CL (1973) out several times a year just to exercise it. The Yashica Mat EL (1958) sees action about once a year. Sadly, it's been almost three years since my Spotmatics have seen the light of day - haven't unpacked them since I moved three years ago. Must find them and take them out for a walk... Re: Film Day 3
Hey, I love digital. If I didn't I wouldn't use it. But I find film (on a mechanical camera) to be refreshing for the reasons you stated, Paul. I like that there are three controls: Focus, aperture, shutter speed. Full automation is great but after a while it becomes tedious. Chimp, see what the camera is doing, decide if I need exposure comp, make sure the camera is focusing on the subject, decide if I have to choose a focus point, refocus, check the shutter speed and aperture in the viewfinder, adjust accordingly if necessary, etc., etc., etc. And that's what I mean by oppressive. One is constantly involved with the ~camera~ and less on the photograph. Because of the simplicity of controls of a mechanical camera all the auto functions are in my head, internalised and just as automatic as when they are in camera. I do my own exposure comp by flicking aperture ring or shutter speed dial. I focus on the subject every time. I can concentrate on ~taking a picture~ rather than paying some attention to what the camera is doing. That is why sometimes digital is oppressive. Film clears my mind. When I pick up my dslr after a day shooting film I am invigorated and ready to have fun again. But I love digital. Will never go back to film any more than a few times a year, just for fun. And to help me appreciate what digital can do. I believe what Frank is saying is that an older film camera without meters, autofocus or other electronic embellishments is in itself simple and straightforward. The function of the machine is rewarding. Using it correctly is not necessarily easy, but that's part of the fun as well. I take pride even in the simple act of loading film into an old screwmount Leica. It's anything but simple. That makes sense, but I'm not getting what makes digital oppressive. I don't think digital is oppressive, but it can get tedious and perhaps uninspiring. Re: Kid pictures (was Re: PESO: Concentration)
If parents don't want their kids photographed in public places they could dress them in little burkas. They could make Western burkas: like Spiderman or Star Wars for boys, Barbie or My Little Pony for the girls. One could do a Christian motif: cover it in crucifixes or maybe a beard and crown of thorns. Different religions could use their own symbology. Cover up your child and indoctrinate all at once! And think of the sports team licensing opportunities here! Your kid will look cool ~and~ be protected from photographers and other pesky predators. With the right marketing this could take off... Last installment here (I think) of this weekend's ice race: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/icycle-2013-pt-ii.html?m=1 Top photo is Alberto the Ice Emperor at the starting line. As you can see, the racers were having lots of fun. The fellow in the red sweater is Derek the race organizer. That's Shawn in the black helmet. One of my faves of the weekend it was taken a few minutes before the first heat and he's definitely got his race face on. He won the last few years and did it again this year. GESO - Icycle 2013, Pt. 1
Yesterday was Icycle 2013, Toronto's annual ice race. Many of the participants are messengers or ex-messengers but anyone who pays the $15 entry fee can race. The money (along with proceeds from beer sales at the afterparty) went to a cyclist who was seriously injured as an innocent bystander (byrider?) when a car involved in a high speed police chase crashed and pinned her against a lamp post. About $1,000 was raised. Anyway, the race is a fun thing as you can see by some of the outfits. The top photo is Alberto the Ice Emperor de Cicco, four-time champ. Leaning into the corner with the bushy beard is Jim the Ice Bear Kuz, another past winner. The close up of the lovely young lady wearing the helmet is Linda who ended up winning the women's race this year. As you can see there was heavy snow during the early heats which made things look rather seasonal: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/icycle-2013-pt-1.html?m=1 Hope you enjoy. Thanks Don, and everyone else who commented. It wasn't really that cold but Jason hates cold so wears the neoprene mask. Looks very Ninja. :-) Christine, a lot of messengers wear shorts over their winter tights. An extra layer of warmth but more than that they are cheaper to replace than tights. Going down on a snowy day won't rip anything but on bare dry pavement spandex doesn't stand a chance. The shorts are for protection. Also for some reason most messengers don't like spandex so will cover it up when possible. Ken, those fat tire bikes are cool! They would be great in snow, that's for sure. I learned long ago that it's a good idea, after being out in the cold with your camera, to bag it up in a ziploc then let it come to room temp for a couple of hours before using/retrieving sd card, etc. All in the name of preventing condensation/moisture from getting into the camera messing with the electronics, etc.. Here's what I wonder: 1) How many of you do this? 2) For a weatherproof camera, like the k-5, is this less necessary? Especially when combined with a WR lens...? Thanks for your thoughts... :) -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?
I suppose I don't count because I am not a gear head. Other than the low ISO I am so happy with my K10d... But there is one reason I would want full frame: wide angle would be wide again. My Zenitar semi-fisheye would be a real 16mm lens again. That would be cool... Cheers, frank --- Original Message --- From: Steve Cottrell co...@seeingeye.tv Sent: February 7, 2013 2/7/13 To: pentax list PDML@pdml.net Subject: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera? I mean, aside from the obvious reasons like, bigger sensor, better image quality, better use with lenses designed to work with a 36X24mm frame, better lighting, better heating, better sewer systems, the roads (yes we can't forget the roads) Back in 2000, this camera came onto the scene: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canond30 and at the time, I was toting both the LX and the MX along with various lenses and stuff. It was the first really 'affordable' DSLR and had I not prevaricated for many months, I would have had one there and then. Instead I waited to see what might be coming from Pentax - and so I waited and waited. And nothing came. And so in 2002, this came out: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneosd60 and I could wait no longer. I jumped. It was made of creaky plastic and it felt not a patch on the quality metal construction of the MX and LX, but shooting with it was amazing. No film! It was about £2000 GBP at the time and the premium paid over and above a comparative film camera would have kept me in FP4 for years. But it was digital and it was instant - I had a grin that lasted weeks. I had the D60 for a while, but longed for better build quality and features - exactly what I found in the 1D mark II (aps-h...1.3X crop). That was a camera that fully met (and exceeded) all expectations. If I'd stayed in the game of carrying a big system about with me, i would have without doubt moved onto a 1Ds (full frame). As it is, I sold up when times were hard, and in fact didn't really miss it all. My son has a 1DmIIn and some lenses, and good luck to him. Nice to play with for a while, and I still mount a Pentax lens on it now and again if I need to do some portraits, but I'm happier with my lil Fuji. So what if Pentax brings out a FF camera - would I jump? i might...but why?? Well, the answer will probably surprise you and some will ridicule. It has to do with a certain lens... I still have my A*85/1.4 and I long for the time I can mount it to a proper 36X24 Pentax body - simple as that. I'd be more than happy with just that lens attached the whole time - and just for portraits. Daft innit! But there you go - that's the way it is. So much for the photographic tools theory. I keep a lens that waits for the right body to come along. Re: PESO -- Major Snow Event?
Blizzards are characterized by high winds. Traditionally sustained winds of 50 km/h (30 mph) were required along with heavy snow. Now the measure is visibility - a combination of winds and snow that limits visibility to 400 metres or yards is a blizzard. I guess my problem with the whole snow event nomenclature is that we had a perfectly useful and universally understood name for what eastern North America just experienced: a winter storm. Snow event seems like more of the CNN-ization of our culture. Silly, but I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep over it. ;-) Cheers, frank --- Original Message --- From: Daniel J. Back in September Frank posted a PESO of some broken mannequins at a store in his neighborhood. I asked him the address as I'd been looking for an inexpensive mannequin to use for lighting tests. Sure enough, the store, Then Again Vintage, had a small number of mannequins left over from a sale, and I bought one. The clerk mentioned that they had way more stuff at the main warehouse. That turned out to be a significant understatement! As you'll see when you look at the gallery. All shots: K20D, DA* 16-50/2.8 SDM, Tav, 1/60th, ISO ranges 200 - 3200. Lightroom 4.3, Photoshop CS5. It wasn't the way I had planned to see in the New Year - I've still got a bottle or two of champers to crack when I get the OK from my doctors. I'm home again after 3 weeks in hospital. I don't know if the quality of daytime TV is the same everywhere but in Sydney it was a choice of endless tennis or re-runs of 1970/80/90 TV dramas and sitcoms. I can't stand televised tennis so I chose the re-runs, but I think I'm now MacGyvered out. I'm now walking OK, but my style and speed wont win any prizes for some time. The left arm is improving but keyboard operations are still a bit of a problem so i won't be posting regularly for a while. I expect to be having more therapy as an outpatient for 4-6 weeks. My biggest complaint is that i haven't taken a single photo in 2013! The K-5 is still a bit beyond me but the Q should be useable - I'm about to order the 5-15mm zoom for it. Re: I've been selected for a juried art show, VAM35
That's a great photo, Bruce. Any thoughts I entertained about going were dashed by that little early evening snow squall. Hope to get by to see it before the show ends. Sounds like a great night all around! Have to admit that I'm a bit uneasy about art competitions, especially between different media as seems to be the case here. Just being included makes you a winner! cheers, frank --- Original Message --- From: Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com Sent: January 17, 2013 1/17/13 To: Pentax Discuss Mailing List PDML@pdml.net Subject: Re: I've been selected for a juried art show, VAM35 Well, the opening is over, and it was really well attended. In fact it was a crush of the kind where inching sideways was necessary to navigate at times. Surprising as Mississauga is not in any way a cultural hot spot and it was also pretty cold (-9C) and snowing tonight. I'll have to wait until my wife's PS is emptied to see if there are any stills to share. I took my K20D but didn't really bother with it. Seemed more of an enjoy-the-moment kind of evening to me. Met some friends, drank some wine, had a couple of veggie spring rolls. Wondered how on earth a few of the works ever got selected, but on the whole enjoyed the show. This was the first year (of 35) that photography was included with traditional fine art media, so I was proud to have been selected and to represent the photographic intruders. :-) I printed my shot at 30 by 20 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas, which I thought was plenty large enough, but it was dwarfed by the paintings, some of which were probably eight feet tall. I'd say the size of the average work in this show is 3x4 feet -- clearly Big Art is In. But interestingly the show's First Prize winner was a conceptual piece made up of a collage of photos. Not strictly Photography per se as it's documentation of the work which is really an installation, or a series of smaller installations. I didn't win anything, except for a warm buzz of participation -- or from the wine; unsure which. I've made my shot public again, so you can see it here: http://www.flickr.com/bruce_m_walker/8207621870/ On Fri, Jan 4, 2013 at 6:23 PM, Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com wrote: The new year was only a couple of days old when I got some great news: I've had an image selected for the Visual Arts Mississauga 35th Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts. Re: OT - on gear, technique and inspiration
I went into it thinking I would dislike it, but surprisingly I didn't. I didn't hear him say not to look at other photographs, especially great ones. What I heard was him saying that when he's shooting he's not specifically thinking about other photos. Just as he's not thinking about equipment, he's just shooting. He didn't say that equipment isn't important, just that he doesn't obsess over it. I didn't hear him say he's a font of creativity, just that he wants to get his creative ideas from within. I thought he made some valid points. Cheers, frank --- Original Message --- From: Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com Sent: January 17, 2013 1/17/13 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: Re: OT - on gear, technique and inspiration Yes, I tended to agree with Larry. He was very good as speaking in metaphor (I tend to think that same way, so I appreciated that). But I guess specifically, what I disliked about his attitude was that he came across as presenting himself as font of creativity and he can't contaminate that by looking at what others have done. Well, I hate to break it to you, but that's how you learn. In fact, if he was honest, that's how HE learned. That's why cooking shows are so popular, for example. You see the ingredients (and equipment) that they use and you get inspired to try it yourself. Now an experienced cook is going to be able to get as good (or better) results even if they don't use exactly the same ingredients or equipment because they know what they are doing. A true kitchen artist can just be thrown into a room with a set number of ingredients and create something great. But they are fooling themselves if they think they got to that point without standing on the shoulders of other who came before them, learning their ways and copying their recipes. I think it is similar with learning anything, like portraiture. You have to learn some basics with regards to flattering lighting for different facial types, etc. You have to learn how/why setting shoulders and slight head tilts towards either the lower or higher shoulder makes one look masculine or rather feminine. You didn't invent that. You didn't discover that. It just IS. But when you are starting out you need to learn to see that. In time, I think we tend to start taking what we have learned and thinking that we always knew it (or worse, that we originated it) when we did no such thing. This guy is just further down the tunnel than most and so now he wants to establish that fact with his audience and belittle the approach of learning from tear sheets? Please. His basic point regarding how your success or creativity is not completely dependent upon a particular piece of equipment? Yeah, I think most of us already know that. But that doesn't mean that we don't still accumulate equipment for whatever reason - if only out of curiousity/experience with something we haven't worked with before. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
