Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
I tested a few google searches and failed to find the current flac test. Eg bbc iplayer r3 flac. It links with the previous one, with no link to current one. bbc iplayer r3 flac does not bring up the link in the first Google page. What is BBC doing with its test website? Does it want it buried? I did complete the questionnaire, of which the question on How do you listen, missed out on the most satisfying way of listening to the flac stream, on my Hifi. Since release of latest 1.5.4.4 on 4-June-2017 whose main role is Flac - there have been about 850 downloads - many of these will be re-installs/failed installs so I think probably 200-300 real users. > What matters is people playing with web browsers, and much more > importantly iPlayer Radio app on various platforms. I suspect BBC had same issues about FM radio - not many had the equipment to listen when broadcasts started, range was worse than AM (poor rural coverage) - so why did BBC implement it ?. The BBC's mandate is usually wider than a commerical station and covers the issues of improving quality etc. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

I think the number is lowish but service is v. highly rated by most - Dr. Who game has about 3.5k but only 1 star compared to Concert Sound 1.2k but a rating of about 4.5stars. Binaural has only 135 ratings. I don't think rights issue is a problem given that BBC is broadcasting all of Radio 3 in flac for 2 months. I think the issue is longer term is additional cost and required bandwidth and is there enough users enabled and wanting to listen to a flac stream. The pilot in Mar/April could only really be played in Firefox. Now in addition to browser there are version of vlc, ffmpeg as well as LMS that can play Dash/Flac. BBC should also be able to determine the number of individuals who have listened using Dash Flac. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

It doesn't really matter, but I > just wondered why. When the Flac streams restarted, I did some testing and I heard this dfiference one evening during a Prom concert (see edit on my post of 12-Jul-17) and thought it was odd as I had checked this before and then there was little or no difference. So I have looked into this as I had assumed a coding error or something had changed. A bit of background. For live DASH the audio is divided into chunks. Each chunk has to be fetched individually using a http/GET and each chunk has an URL with a unique timecode. In the case of the Flac streams the timecode multiplied by 3.84 gives epochtime. So I did a side by side comparison of the URLs for the segments being fetched by Firefox player and my plugin and the timecode for the segments being fetched were very close. So in this case I was not getting the minutes delay. End result - I need to do more test to see if this "delay" is consistent or it varies (e.g. Is Prom stream DASH header different in some way) . If it varies - determine the reason. Technical Info. To minimise rebuffering, the plugin tries to pre-fetch segments. Pre-fetching means fetching chunks that are not realtime but a few segments older. Currently plugin is setup to prefetch 2 segment which would result in live stream being about 7.6 secs for Flac or 13 secs for AAC behind realtime. LMS players have internal buffers and for live streams the player will nto start playing until the internal bufer has reached a threshold (i.e. Plugin setting Buffer Fullness Threshold). With Flac the max threshold is usually reached in 2 segments (I think) but this shouldn't be causing the delay. Last year one of BBC technical posted in the forum that my plugin tries to fetch segments too soon (i.e. plugin was trying to fetch segment that weren't yet read) and BBC weren't happy as it created lots of log messages on their servers. So I included a "guard" of 2 segments. This means at worst plugin should be about 4-6 segment behind firefox which for flac is 12-20 secs. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

When you skip back - the plugin request a chunk with a specific timecode and then plays sequentlially from there. Wirh AAC the time buffer is currently about 3 Hours. The LMS+Plugin+SB is a non BBC internet player - functionally same as any internet radio appliance - a bit unusual in that it is up to date with all formats. As I understood the questionaire - it was about your "normal" predominant way of listening to Radio 3 - so "other" is the "most honest" as technically it seems they are interested in the playing appliance rather than the transport technology (i.e Desktop and iPlayer App are the same transport - DAB and FM are not.). bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
BBC seem to have started the Radio 3 Live stream again ahead of the Proms. To play Flac - you need the V 1.5.4.* of the plugin as Flac is a bit of an experiment by BBC. Once installed then you need to set Live Stream setting to "DashFlac > DASH" and play the "BBC Radio 3 Flac" stream To install V1.5.4.* use the repo URL http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/V154testrelease-repo.xml Some updates for the plugin may be needed - these will be delivered through the above repo. As chunks are bigger and duration of each chunk is smaller (3.84 secs Flac vs 6.4 secs for AAC) some buffering issues might show up. Known issues at the moment: 1. Bit rate is incorrectly displayed on Web GUI - needs to be checked 2. When playing Flac stream a number of extra unnecessary messages are logged such as "long chunk fetch time" and "Invalid estimated delay" 3. Realtime "current track" program info is not always displayed bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Without the "-R" the expectation is that LMS will do the resampling (there may be something odd about streams vs files). Also the -R X is available for users who want a 44.1Hz stream to be resampled to say 88.2Hz because it will sound better ! bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

I'm using 1.5.3 and in general all seems well with the streams with one very odd situation - one of my players just streams silence, whilst all the others seems to work fine. I have a mixture of h/w (transporter, boom, SB3) and picore players. All work fine apart from one, which has a pi2, picoreplayer & Hifiberry Amp+. Other h/w players seem fine, as do other pi based players. On the one that doesn't work, it's streaming other content fine - e.g. local music, TIDAL, other internet radio services. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
Around 4-Jun-17 when I last updated the betarelease-repo.xml repo URL to supply BBCiPlayerExtra V2.x I made an error and so broke the repo xml and LMS wouldn't load. I've fixed the repo XML and also updated the repo to deliver V1.5.3 instead of 1.5.2 (as well as Extra V2.x) as it has a number of big fixes. When V1.5.4.* ( Flac streaming for Proms, segment info) is tested a bit more in July - I'll update the betarelease-repo.xml to deliver 1.5.4.* 11-Feb-17 Release notes for BBCiPlayer 1.5.3 beta - Change to live streaming behaviour due to a problem noted by BBC. - Fix to problem of metadata getting stuck/not updating on live stream - Fix to "delay" message after skipback so that time shown is sensible. - Better handling of failed http request and tidyup after http requests. - Reduced default timeouts of http requests. - Fix for "Listen Again" on DASH 9-Feb-17 bug - "Recent Tracks" menu to provide info on latest tracks played on some stations. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

However very large amounts of third party content (especially sport and recorded audio) came with significant rights restrictions, and the BBC were very worried that unless they enforced visible safeguards to restrict straightforward redistribution then obtaining this content for broadcast would become either impossible or horrendously costly. As to whack-a-mole, I think the BBC have decided they only want people using Apps or the BBC web site because they have tighter control of those. They probably regret ever officially supporting third party hardware internet radios, the feed for them (which this plugin uses) probably only still exists because the BBC don't think they can get away with annoying the manufacturers. I like the idea of the plugin accumulating 7 day schedue information until it has 30 days worth. It's reasonably elegant, and it uses the official published feed for third parties so I don't see how the BBC can do something to break it. My only thought on the 30 day issues was for the plugin to save the BBC 7 day feed and merge with previous day so that after a while there is a accumulated feed which would provide the 30 days. I liked A-Z (and other feeds) it meant you could find programmes easily (search current BBC web site for "In our time" and you get any program with "our" "time" as well). Look at BBC web site now - I challenge you to find the A-Z menu there (it is still there but no longer front & centre) and it also seems to me BBC have either deliberately slowed it down or changed the database so that it is very very slow. At the moment I don't have the enthusiasm to develop these ideas (and I have researched other approaches in the background) further as I think BBC is playing "whack-a-mole" where 3rd parties are the mole - if I develop an answer - BBC will shut down that route. I think one motive is the BBC is trying to hamper the "downloaders" and we're just collateral damage bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

I don't this recent problem was a specific reaction to the new feature - many of the Extras feeds have also gone down. This is similar to what happened a few weeks ago. I think BBC now make changes mid week instead of weekend so they have time to react and fix problem during week days rather than have feedback build up and overflow on a Monday. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

They've had versions of this data for several years now, at least for the Radio 3 programmes above, although the format and tags have changed a bit over time. The accuracy, completeness (and sometimes the format and tags used) seem to depend a lot on the individual programme producer or external production company, with the data for Late Junction being generally pretty good, especially since Reduced Listening took over production. One difference to this change is that they seem to have re-formatted the metadata for programmes already in the database. 1.5.4.3 has the following changes 1. Click on a segment in "Segment Time" menu and player will jump to the segment and play it. 2. Small change to segment list formatting of time to now hours:mins:secs if necessary 3. If no segment info from BBC - a segment info list of equal segments is created to make it easy to jump to one.(is this useful ?) Segment Times menu is not available if program is played from BBCiPlayerExtra menu. Mainly because Extras in current form is due to die next week due to BBC change. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
Another small mod the latest test version. In addition to R3 Flac support in 1.5.4 (only a few days left to test) - this version add On-Demand segment info as a menu. I've uploaded BBCiPlayer 1.5.4.2. For anybody using the V154testreleaserepo - upgrade will be notified automatically. Main changes - Recent Tracks now show elapsed time (i.e. mins:secs since track was played) rather than absolute when track was played due to UTC/BST confusion. - New "Segment Times" under "more" menu for On-Demand programs. This shows the time and details of a segment. Segment Info "More" menu BBC shows Track/segment infor for On-demand programs on web browser and maybe on Apps( but I don't know since they are not available outside UK without sideloading) This "more" menu shows the list of segments and the time when a segment begins. It is headed by "Playing" to show current or most recent segment info. For R1,R2 and R3 the segment info is usually a piece of music. For R4 talk shows (e.g. You & Yours) the segment info will be the topic or name of guest. Not sure what segmentinfo shows for other BBC station. I tried to add this info as "album" to current displayed program info but LMS only shows the album info when first added and it is not updated while track is playing - so I couldn't add it to the info. repo IRL http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/V154testrelease-repo.xml bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

I've had no 404s, even at zero delay, on any of my devices, including the previously problematic Local Player. I left it running even when not listening (other things one has to do!), and it's run for hours with no log errors. Thanks very much indeed. I'm looking forward to the Proms on R3 flac. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
This only relate to those testing the BBC R3 Flac stream with V1.5.4 I've just released the V1.5.4.1 which should fix the "404" aka "Stream stops playing after a couple of minutes" problem when playing Flac streams. If using 1.5.4 LMS should show update available. This means the "live stream delay" could probably be set to a low value without fear of stream stopping with a 404 error - can't guarantee no gaps at low value though bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

BBC could put 10 there and it would be displayed as 10kbps and stream will play at higher rate. The Flac stream is sent as 3.84 sec segment. I added a log which did simple estimate of the rate for each 3.84 sec segment. In a 5 minute period (a piano piece) the values were typically in the 380-420kbps but there was one low of 146kbps and a high of 546kbps. BBC themselves have commented that the Flac stream is typically around 500kbps. The 1 min delay is just the way stream is setup - you'll hear same delay on browser player. For reference as an indication of compression level. CD is 44.1KHz/16bits 2 chan which has a rate of 1411.2 kbps BBC Flac is 48KHz/16bits 2 channel 1536 kbps bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
Thank-you : Testing here UK location, players are the Mac/squeeze Play, Radios and PiCore. No gaps or disruption, and I must admit I do have set -Seconds to delay start live stream- to -no-delay-. The actual delay is slightly behind the AAC stream, which is obviously some time behind the FM stream. No errors appear in the log. Other settings as per the instructions and highest DASH. Tried a 1 minute/start delay too and that also worked fine. Only question I have is that it displays the decoded audio as 365kbps CBR, flc -- I've not spent any further time checking if that is the case or a setting I'm missing - but I can play higher rate vbr FLAC from the library. Most of the source material today has not been useful for checking the AAC/LAC difference on the PiCore/Hifi set up, (well not that I can tell yet) but will be great for the Proms. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
This post relates to V1.5.4 which has only one change from 1.5.3 - to support DASH Flac. It is a rough and ready addition. The BBC have been testing DASH Flac stream for last few months ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/taster/projects/radio-3-concert-sound also http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2017-04-radio-3-high-quality-flac-dash ). I have done a mod to BBCiPlayer to play these Flac streams. This has been discussed on the "original" bBCiPlayer DASHthread. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?104672-BBCiPlayer-with-DASH-support-test-version/page28 Although this test is due to end in 2 weeks - it looks like the BBC may be using same technology for Proms so it may be helpful for users to test. see https://www.whathifi.com/news/bbc-proms-to-be-broadcast-in-lossless-audio-first-time and http://www.tvbeurope.com/bbc-deliver-proms-flac-level-audio/ --- Since time is short - this is V1.5.4 quickly put together. Only change is for Flac. Not extensively tested. Change the plugin repo to http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/V154testrelease-repo.xml Install as usual.. Two new menus "Radio 3 Flac" in Live & Live (non-UK). This only plays DASH-Flac format. Make sure plugin "Live Stream Preference" is "Dashflac > DASH" Make sure "Seconds to delay live stream start" is set to 1 min or more. No skip back ability as BBC only provides last 10 mins of live stream. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Yes, the system time is wrong! 2011! Thanks for suggesting this. The Sparky is armv7l-linux, running Debian - EN - utf8. Don't know what an Allo sparky is - Linux ? arm v6 v7 ?? RPI package ? If menus are shown under Radio/ BBCiPlayer - then There is something odd in your system. Usual suspects are LMS cache and system time. Anything in the log files ? 7.8.0 is old and was updated to to 7.8.1 as well as there is a 7.9 release. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106409 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test
I have just installed LMS (7.8.0) on a new machine (an Allo Sparky). It seems to be running fine, except that BBCiPlayer (1.5.2) displays "empty" where the programs used to be (on the old machine). Listen Live (outside the UK) works fine. BBCiPlayer Extras can find all the programs. The URL displays as (for example) http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/availability/radio4.xml, and if I enter this in a browser all the program information seems to be there. Both the On Demand and the Live stream preferences are set to: DASH>HLS>MP3>FlashAAC Any suggestions what I might be doing wrong?
