Peters Street TICKETS: Sold out. A living history of New Orleans music turned out at the D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home for Johnny Adams' funeral last fall: Ernie K-Doe. Cyril and Aaron Neville. Dave Bartholomew. George Porter Jr. Wild Magnolias Big Chief Bo Dollis. Tommy Ridgley. Harold Battiste. Willie "Tee" Turbinton. After they raised the roof of the chapel with a musical tribute, the mourners solemnly filed past Adams' open casket. Aaron Neville, a red carnation accenting his white shirt, paused for a moment in front of the casket, then reached out and placed a single rosary bead on the lapel of Adams' lavender suit. Neville's gesture, played out as a battery of cameras clicked away and the Treme Brass Band kicked off an indoor second-line, communicated the intimacy that existed between the two men, one of deep mutual respect and admiration. Neville learned to sing in part by mimicking the swooping falsetto on Adams' earliest recordings; this was his final farewell to a fellow world-class vocalist and first-class gentleman. When cancer silenced Adams at age 66 on Sept. 14, 1998, New Orleans and the world lost one of its great, largely unsung musical heroes. During a 40-year career, "the Tan Canary," as he was lovingly dubbed by an admiring disc jockey, never scored a national hit on par with K-Doe's "Mother In Law," never enjoyed a modern-day career resurgence of the sort that has blessed Aaron Neville. But to his devoted fans - which, tellingly, include everyone from rhythm blues belter Ruth Brown to contemporary blues-rocker Bonnie Raitt, from old-school singer Neville to youthful Darius Rucker, lead singer of Hootie the Blowfish - his voice shone as one of the brightest in American music, the New Orleans equivalent of Frank Sinatra. Knowing, refined, versatile, a technical marvel, his nimble voice could articulate subtle shades of emotion in everything from the earthiest rhythm blues to the most elegant jazz. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival has lost several members of its extended family since last year's event. Longtime contemporary jazz and evening concert producer Charlie Bering died after a long illness. Gospel singer Raymond Myles was murdered a month after he stirred the congregation at Adams' funeral. Both Myles and Bering are being honored at the '99 Jazzfest, but Adams warranted a special tribute. On Tuesday, Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas, Marva Wright, Big Al Carson and storied local arranger Wardell Quezergue and his orchestra will join together to salute Adams and his music during a sold-out Jazzfest evening concert at the Praline Connection, performing the Tan Canary's songs as well as their own. Ironically, it will be a bigger crowd than Adams ever performed for in his hometown, save his sets at Jazzfest. Jazzfest producer/director Quint Davis' eulogy at Adams' funeral sketched out the singer's place in the musical cosmos. "As it was with the passing of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Fess (Professor Longhair) and James Booker," Davis said, "there is no replacing the true masters." Like many great singers, Johnny Adams started off in gospel, and only reluctantly agreed to try his hand at secular RB. But once he relented, he discovered that he had a natural flair for the music. Songwriter Dorothy Labostrie, the person that initially persuaded Adams to try RB, also gave him his first single, "I Won't Cry," which he recorded for the local Ric Records label. It became a

Clip == Willie at JazzFest - Friday
Hi folks! For all of us wanting to be in NOLA this weekend, eating beignets, crawfish Monica and alligator pie.here's the next best thing (sort of). Coverage via the Times-Picayune WEB site. A review of Willie's performance follows, other info can be found at: http://www.nola.com/jazzfest EnjoyK. Music writer Keith Spera's views and reviews of the 'fest April 24, 1999 *Willie Nelson* If you've ever seen Willie Nelson, then you can pretty much describe what the Red-Headed Stranger was like as he closed out the Ray-Ban Stage Friday. Nelson is nothing if not consistent: the waist-length braids, the red bandanna and thatunmistakable, nasally Nelson twang, a take-it-or-leave-it sort of voice. The barricades in front of the stage eliminated the time-honored Nelson tradition of accepting and sampling drinks delivered from the audience, which may have accounted for the laid-back tone of the set early on. The mix favored ballads too much, and 15 minutes into the show was a bit early to turn the spotlight over to his piano-playing sister for an instrumental. It wasn't until he got around to "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," his hit duet with Waylon Jennings, and Billy Joe Shaver's "Fast Train to Georgia," that the pace picked up. Nelson gave his battered acoustic guitar a workout, plucking and pulling at the strings as he and his acoustic "family" band ran through the outlaw country canon. The Willie Nelson Family includes not only the band, but also the fellow troubadours whose songs they cover: Shaver, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson. Nelson did Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" as an acoustic shuffle, powered by the drummer's brushes on a snare. The world-weary, knowing quality in his twang can make lines like "wakin' up this morning to the feeling of your fingers on my skin" and "lovin' you is the easiest thing I'll ever do again" seem downright authentic, even though he's sung them a billion times. And he manipulated that voice to great effect as he delivered the simple, quietly optimistic line "blue sky smiles at me, nothing but blue skies from now on." Nelson may wear the same ol' hat -- make that bandanna -- but he wears it well.

CST Clip - Kelly Willis/Bruce Robison at JD's Last Night
Hi folks, Here's what you missed if you weren't at JD's! Both were excellent, but, Bruce's songwriting and singing is killer. "Desperately" still being my favorite on "Wrapped." Kelly dipped back into her repertoire for "River of Love" (shout from moi!) which she said they hadn't been doing for a while and was her favorite by ex-h, Mas Palermo. Read on * Willis offers a deserving concert * Johnny D's, Somerville, Mass., April 21, 1999 By Jeffrey B. Remz SOMERVILLE, MA. - After years of languishing between record deals, has the time come for Kelly Willis? The Austinite is touring hot on the heels of "What I Deserve," her Rykodisc debut filled with country twang and softer sounds. Two months since its release, the disc has sold a very healthy 30,000 copies. She's been atop the Americana radio charts for several weeks running. And in concert before a packed house, Willis converted a strong album into a strong performance. That is underpinned by the voice of the diminutive singer. She used it to good effect throughout the 90-minute show, capably emoting passion and pain, often in love songs. Vulnerable, yet determined. whether on the title track or her previously recorded "Heaven's Just a Sin Away," a number one hit for The Kendalls in 1977. Willis has displayed a keen sense at picking solid material. One of her favorite songwriters is her husband, Bruce Robison. Willis even sang "Take It Out on You," which she described as "the pure definition of a country song" since Robison and her ex-husband combined forces to write the musically upbeat song. She sang a few songs from her extremely limited release (Texas only) of "Fading Fast," turning in a very solid performance on the title track, which also appears on "What I Deserve." Willis was backed by a generally solid band, especially fiddler and back-up singer Amy Tivnen. Guitarist Jerry Holmes added many tasty licks as well. At times, the drumming proved a bit too loud, but usually the quartet delivered. Robison opened with a solo acoustic 35-minute set comprised of a few new songs from his upcoming summer release and songs from his "Wrapped" disc of last year. In fact, Robison offered both his version of the title song as did Willis later in his set. Both worked. While a band may often add more punch to songs, Robison's warm voice was strong enough to overcome that obstacle. Willis certainly has not had a linear career, but she now may be on the upswing once again. CST link == http://countrystandardtime.com Kate

Kelly, Heather CD observations
Hi all, Typing my life away and listening to the new Kelly Willis in anticipation of her show here on Wednesday at JD's. Thinking that I like this new CD but in no way, shape or form does it come close to the quality of Heather Myles' CD. Have been following Kelly since her first effort and like her voice/style but IMHO Heather should have been presented with the keys to Nashville for recording "Highways Honky Tonks". The songs on that CD are knockouts and should have received the attention and sales that weaker product like the Chicks have been getting for over a year (no Chick-bashing needed, just an observation). Happy Patriots/Marathon Day to all, especially those brave runners!! Kate

Clip == Review of Cash Tribute on TNT, Sun 8pm
Hi all, Here's a review of the Cash tribute being aired this Sunday. Larry Katz writes for the Boston Herald (and loves Billy Joe Shaver, too): **Tribute to Johnny Cash is rich one ** by Larry Katz Thursday, April 15, 1999 Tribute concerts, especially TV tribute concerts, all too easily turn sanctimonious and sentimental. That's not the case with ``An All-Star Tribute To Johnny Cash,'' which airs on TNT Sunday night at 8 (and repeats at 10). In a show where so much could have gone wrong, nearly everything goes right. Rather than hold it in the country music stronghold of Nashville, ``An All-Star Tribute'' was shot last week in an equally treacherous environment: in front of an audience of invited guests at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. The roster of participants needlessly includes celebrities such as Kevin Bacon and Tim Robbins. And when the night's silk scarf-and-tuxedo-wearing host, actor Jon Voight, takes his position behind an Academy Awards-style podium, you have every reason to expect an overload of gushy praise for the honoree, a 67-year-old legend battling a neurological disorder that has halted his career. But Cash, a rebel with a low tolerance for showbiz claptrap, wouldn't want that. And neither do we. Voight, despite his nonexistent connection to Cash's world, does a decent job. He keeps his remarks brief and acts as a sort of narrator, moving the show briskly along and connecting its parts. The musical performances begin modestly, with Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow teaming for a medley of ``Jackson'' and ``Orange Blossom Special'' (Crow proves here that if she ever tires of pop, she has a future as a country singer). Chris Isaak follows by recalling Cash's start at Sun Studios in Memphis in 1955 with ``I Guess Things Just Happen That Way'' and ``Get Rhythm.'' From these initial performances comes a sense that the night's music will be just a little rawer and edgier than what's heard on your usual country music special. One reason is that Cash himself has always been considerably rawer and edgier than your usual country music singer. Another is that the house band is not your usual Paul Shaffer- or G.E. Smith-led collection of polished, play-anything professionals. Instead, it's a real working band. In fact, it's a great working band, the Mavericks. Every number they pick and sing on, they lift out of the ordinary. The emotional pitch rises with the appearance of Cash's wife, June Carter Cash. She introduces the classic hit she co-wrote, ``Ring of Fire,'' by evoking her husband's aura of danger: ``This song had to do about with when I first fell in love with Johnny Cash. It was kind of scary . . . because he was kind of scary at the time.'' U2 follows live-by-satellite from Ireland with a reggae version of ``Don't Take Your Guns to Town,'' appropriate if you know that June and John have maintained a home in Jamaica for many years. Cash's complexity as a man and an artist emerges slowly but surely. The Mavericks step into the spotlight for a rendition of ``Man in Black,'' a song which explains Cash's wardrobe as a symbol of solidarity with the poor and dispossessed. Kris Kristofferson performs ``The Ballad of Ira Hayes,'' a protest song lamenting the fate of the Native American hero of Iwo Jima. He's then joined by Trisha Yearwood for ``Sunday Morning Coming Down,'' a bleak song that gives Yearwood a welcome chance to show a less manicured side of her talent. With everything going so well, you anticipate a letdown when mainstream country singer Larry Gatlin pops out to introduce the unabashedly commercial country duo Brooks Dunn. But their take on ``Ghostriders in the Sky'' is plenty tasty. Worries surface again when Kevin Bacon appears to bring on Wyclef, Lauryn Hill's cohort in the hip-hopping Fugees. What's he doing here, other than to broaden the viewer demographic? But Wyclef, wearing a cowboy hat and picking acoustic guitar, comes through with a mind-blowing ``Delia's Gone,'' a dark and violent song from Cash's 1990s collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. First Wyclef shocks by singing with a good ol' hillbilly twang. Then he stops the show with a rap for Cash. You need to hear it to believe it. The highlights continue: Bruce Springsteen (``Give My Love to Rose'') and Bob Dylan (``Train of Love'') contribute via tape. Dave Matthews delivers a more-than-credible ``Long Black Veil'' with Emmylou Harris, who returns with Crow and Mary Chapin Carpenter (``Flesh and Blood''). Lyle Lovett does ``Tennessee Flat-Top Box'' and Marty Stuart and the Fairfield Four recall Cash's gospel work. Finally, the Man in Black himself comes onstage for ``Folsom Prison Blues.'' It is, he announces, his first time performing in 19 months. It's a stirring end to a stirring show, one full of performances destined to become cherished collectibles by fans of the artists involved. Don't just watch ``An All-Star Tribute to Johnny

Clip - *Crash kills daughter of Flaco *
Just found this very sad article about Flaco's daughter: *Crash kills daughter of Flaco * By Alison Gregor and Ramiro Burr Express-News Staff Writers The 27-year-old daughter of Grammy-winning accordionist Flaco Jimenez was killed Monday when her car and a pickup collided just blocks away from the Jimenez home in South San Antonio. An investigator walks away from the scene of an accident on Texas 16, south of Loop 410, where Rosalinda Esquivel, the daughter of music legend Flaco Jimenez, was killed Monday. Guadalupe Ortiz, a sister-in-law of Jimenez, was in critical condition Monday night. Rosalinda Jimenez Esquivel was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. at the scene of the crash at 10222 Texas 16 South. The other passenger in the white sedan, Guadalupe Ortiz, the 40-year-old sister-in-law of Flaco Jimenez, was taken by AirLife to University Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Monday night. The prominent accordionist wept at the scene along with his wife, Adela Jimenez, and another daughter, Cynthia Jimenez, as they learned of the crash. Cynthia Jimenez cradled her dead sister's 6-month-old daughter in her arms. "We live on the corner, and we saw a lot of cars," Cynthia Jimenez said. "I told my mama, 'I have a feeling it's her,' and I looked outside, and there was the car." According to police, the white sedan was attempting to cross the southbound lane when the collision occurred. Both cars careened across the median, ripping away a street sign and skidding more than 100 feet, landing in the northbound access road. The pickup's driver, 58year-old Joseph Gillespie, was taken to Southeast Baptist Hospital with minor injuries. A infant car seat rested beside the twisted metal of the sedan. Cynthia Jimenez said 6-month-old Daniela Esquivel would've been in the car had it not been for a lastminute change of plans. Members of the Jimenez family and their friends were trying to come to terms with their grief Monday night. "We're all taking it real hard," said a distraught David Jimenez, older brother of Rosalinda. Another close family friend said Flaco Jimenez was extremely upset and not talking to anybody right now. Police said no charges are likely to be filed in the accident. Born Jan. 24, 1972, Rosalinda, one of eight children of Flaco and Adela Jimenez, was married to landscaper Daniel Esquivel, who rushed to the scene when he heard of her death. "They were going to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on May 6," said David Jimenez, who also plays drums in his father's conjunto band. The Esquivels, who have a home next door to the Jimenez household on Texas 16 South, have an 8-yearold daughter, Melissa, besides Daniela. Flaco Jimenez, winner of five Grammy awards, returned last week from an annual European tour, said his promoter friend Amie Castillo. "He was scheduled to fly Saturday in a thunderjet during an air show in Riverside, Calif.," said Castillo. On April 22, Jimenez is scheduled to be honored with El Premio Billboard, a lifetime achievement award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards and Conference in Miami, for what the magazine called "his groundbreaking exposure of polka-flavored conjunto sounds to audiences in the U.S., Europe and Asia." Jimenez also is scheduled to be the grand marshal of the 1999 Texas Cavaliers' River Parade April 19. "We are very saddened by the news, but as far as we know, he's still on (for the parade), and if he prefers not to ride that night, that's fine," said Robert Eversberg, the parade marshal. "We'll be thinking about him, and he'll still be the grand marshal." Eversberg said Jimenez was picked to be honored this year because "he's a special San Antonio musician who's been recognized in his field of music through Grammys, and he would be very representative of our city." © 1999 San Antonio Express-News-Monday, Apr 5,1999

Hi folks, Tejas-size thanks to all (Mike, Kat, Buddy, etc..) for the fine "field reports" on Dale. He is so damn good! Wish I could have been there. I still haven't recovered from his show here on 10/19 w/Jimmie Dale Gilmore. If Robert Duvall is still working on a movie project about Merle, I think we all need to e-mail the guy and tell him we've found his man! Thanks again, Kate.
Re: Dale Watson Report?
Hi Mike, Unfortunately, I'm not privy to Duvall's address. If I were, he'd have gotten heaped loads of praise for putting Billy Joe Shaver on the big screen. Interesting that he's going to LA for a soundtrack, wonder what that's all about? Soif anyone DOES have a way to reach Duvall, the mssg is: "Dale is your man!" So, you have an e-mail address for Mr. Duvall? Dale would be right for a young Merle part. Charlie (road mangler) G. said something last night about Dale flying out to L.A. when they get back to Austin to record a couple of songs for a soundtrack but the noise level was too high to get a lot of detail.

From writing the insipid "Who Wants to Buy This Diamond Ring" for Gary Lewis the Playboys in 1965, his late '60s recordings with the Blues Project, to the inspired organ part on Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man". more info Re: BMI vs. ASCAP?
Joe writes: (BTW, none of this has anything whatsoever to do with publishing. Bug Music is a publisher. BMI and ASCAP are "performing rights societies" which serve as collection agencies for performance royalties only, send them to the publishers and writers, and deduct 1% of your royalties to pay their overhead. In order to collect "mechanical royalties", or money from record sales, you either have to have a publisher, be your own publisher, or at least register yourself with the Harry Fox Agency (they have a website) in order to collect your mechanicals.) ...which is why BUG is so cool, they do BOTH! And, it was started as a result of Del Shannon was getting screwed "royalty" and Dan Burgoise stepped up to the plate and "found" him millions owed from all over. Including cash for Runaway! Read their story, it's a good 'un! http://www.bugmusic.com/charmart.html Here's some from an interview that originally appeared in HITS October 16, 1995: In 1975, they hatched the idea for Bug Music, aiming to take advantage of a vacuum in the publishing world, and haven't had one regret until they had to sit for an hour with... -WHAT VOID DID YOU SEE IN THE PUBLISHING BUSINESS IN 1975 THAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BUG? Dan- At that point a lot of singer/songwriters had stopped going to publishers because attorneys had come up with the concept of 'keep your own copyrights, but let us administer them here. Who needs publishers?' Meantime, publishers still provided valuable and important services, but had grown stodgy and old and were resting on their laurels, so all the new stuff was being administered by law offices, who did the paperwork but none of the creative functions. So what Bug music became was a blending of the two things - taking the creativity and energy of the publisher and combining it with the lower-based fees and allowing writers to keep their own copyrights. It became attractive and writers started telling writers. It turned out to be a good idea. Kate
Re: more info Re: BMI vs. ASCAP?
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Well, they both publish and administer - which is to act on behalf of a publisher, following up with BMI, ASCAP, the HFA, etc. to collect royalties that these agencies have collected, and also, as the interview notes, to pitch songs and other publishing-type activities for folks who are their own publishers but don't have the inclination or ability to do those things, but Bug does not directly collect performance and mechanical royalties. got it! So, Bill, have we made your decision any easierg??? K.

Attention ex-Bostonians == WMBR Available via the Internet!
Hi everyone, Great news this week: the radio station of MIT (yup, that school with all the smarties) is now available over the Internet (WMBR, 88.1). For anyone that has ever lived close to the Boston/Cambridge area -- listen up Soron -- this is like a dream come true! The bad news: "Rockin' With Greg" just ended his 20yr stint at the station last month, lets hope he comes back for a few guest appearances. Although there are many great shows at the station, those of most interest to P2ers would be Wed 6-8am, Debbie Does Dallas; Sat 8-10am, Lost Highway; and 10-noon, Backwoods. These are all EST timeslots. Go to the site, check out the programming and enjoy! Here's their address: http://wmbr.mit.edu/ Then click on: RealAudio Kate N.P. Vince Bell/TEXAS PLATES

In a message dated 3/31/1999 7:53:08 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: And I'll also dutifully report that Earle dedicated "Copperhead Road" to the guy who ceaslessly hollered for it all evening long -- quote: "Here you go, asshole." Y'know, I can't in my wildest dreams imagine Del McCoury ever doing anything even remotely like that. ...it was real interesting to watch Steve cursing his head off as Del moved further and further back into the darkness of the stage at The Vic, Chicago. I'm surprised he lasts as long as he does when Steve is ranting about record labels, the death penalty, the audience or other sordid issues. I'll say this for The Del McCoury Band...someone yells for a request, and the band IMMEDIATELY jumps into it (when they tour on their own). At some shows/festivals, the entire night is made up of requests with new material thrown in to push the product. Once again, solid lessons from the "Wanda Jackson School of Entertainment" = they paid good money, we're gonna give 'em what they want! IMHO, Steve's approach is much more rigid and, in a way, less gratifying after seeing Del and the boyz in action. Kate.

Hi all, Sorry if any of this has been posted, have been off P2 for a few days. Saw Del/Steve et al while in Chicago. They played at The Vic, which is a big old theater with all the seats pulled out. Nice idea except when most of the folks are drunk and smoking like chimneys. The single mic got lost beyond the first 15 "rows" of folks in a very chatty room. Of course, they were still very good. Best part of the show == Mike Bub whacking the back of his bass for the intro to "Copperhead Road," really nice touch! Funniest part of the show == Hats-$27; T-Shirts-$25 (no, I didn't buy a single thing) HOWEVERgot to see an in-store at Borders (accompanied by my unemployed- partner in crime, Bob) and would have easily paid $50 for what we witnessed. Pure heaven, and all within 5ft of Steve/Del and the boyz. Sound was great, Del is a joy to watch and hear any day of the week. Steve looked very dapper in his gray button-down wool vest and plaid cap. Looks like the McCoury's are affecting Steve's grooming habits ;-)) Jason, Ronnie and Robbie were all superb. And of course, everyone was smiling, including grouchy-boy Earle. It's contagious!! I'm hoping to get some pix up on the Unofficial Earle site by week's end. Re: boot me baby, but don't sell it
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: There isn't a contract between the artist and the public because there's a LAW that says that an artist's material belongs to the artist until s/he assigns the right to reproduce it to someone else in a contract. According to this argument, a company would be free to release material as long as it DIDN'T have a contract. The technical term for this is "ass-backwards." Agree Following all of this bootlegging, music stealin', moral lacking, illegal tappin' line of discussion --- someone might want to review the laws which are nicely displayed on the WEB pages of ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. Seems to me, it's pretty clear that no matter how much you "support" a musician by buying their product, it'll be a pathetic bargaining chip at the time a judge is figuring out your fine or prison sentence. I am hoping it will make it on the next TMP cd. I met a few P2ers that I knew by rep only like Meshel, Amy H. and CK. Saw Yates and Deborah, Slim, Chad H., Matt Cook, Bill Silvers, Jamie S., Jayne, and quite a few others I am forgetting right now. Went to a Sony party at Stubbs and saw a little of Old Pike, Bare Jr. I had only seen Bare Jr. do acoustic in stores before so they were a little louder and rocked the house. Went across the street to the Doolittle party to find that the Bottle Rockets weren't going to make the party but ate and watched Todd Thibaud for three good pop songs. Back to Stubbs to catch Houndog, the David Hidalgo side project. Good greasy, bluesy sounds. Wayne Hancock started his showcase outside an hour early so we got to see about thirty minutes of that. Next to Cheapo Discs as the rain starts to see Robbie Fulks. Despite sound problems Robbie was in good form, "Burn Together, Tears only Run one way",God Isn't Real", a new song that he said he just recorded with Kelly Willis called "Parallel Bars" where he sang both parts of the duet. Nashville cuts that strike me as good, respectable stuff these days. Maybe there *is* a trend Yesterday , for ex., I heard that Trisha song, "Powerful Thing" (or whatever the title is) and thought it was an entirely enjoyable sort of pop-twang number, nice fiddle line, etc Thankfully, people like Al Anderson (ex-NRBQ) have a lot to do with that new sound. Let's hope this is a success, the possibilities are mind-boggling. I'm sure everyone's thinking about who you'd LOVE to see appear on this show each month!!! ~~~ I've included a recent story which tells about the efforts of Maggie (Lewis) and Alton Warwick to restore the Hayride, my apologies if this story has already been posted: *Couple seeks to restore Hayride to its former glory* (Tuesday, January 19, 1999) By Mary Foster Associated Press writer SHREVEPORT, La. - Almost 40 years have passed since the sounds of the Louisiana Hayride floated out over the bayous and swamps of its home state, then west to the little towns and ranches of Texas, north and east to the hardscrabble farms of Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and points beyond. The live radio shows packed the Municipal Auditorium on Saturday nights and had people dancing on their porches, in their living rooms and in honky-tonks and churches around the country. The Hayride was Elvis Presley's first national stage and launched the careers of some of country music's biggest names. Now Maggie and Alton Warwick are hoping to bring the Hayride back on a regular broadcast as it was back then. "It's amazing how many people have stories about the Hayride," said Maggie Warwick, who first listened to the program as a west Texas teenager and later performed on the show. "So many people remember the shows, being there or listening to them on the radio. It was a big part of our lives." From 1948 to 1960 the Hayride blossomed in the region still known as the "Ark- La-Tex," a mix of cultures that included hillbilly, Western swing, blues, gospel, jazz and pop music. "People think hillbilly is a derogatory term now," said Tillman Franks, a Hayride alumnus. "Back then it was just the kind of music a lot of people liked. They called it country and western later to try to dress it up, but it was pretty darn good when it was plain old hillbilly." Aired live on 50,000-watt KWKH radio, the show was relayed nationally by CBS and overseas by Armed Forces Radio. As Saturday night entertainment, it was addictive. "We had the only radio around and people came from all over to listen to the Hayride," John LeBlanc of Lafayette remembered. "We lived way out in the middle of nowhere, but come Saturday night the yard was full of pickups and our old Philco was playing full-blast." The Shreveport Municipal Auditorium bustled every Saturday night with people jamming the aisles for music, comedy and contests all wrapped in a down-home atmosphere. "They used to give away prizes. I guess they were from the sponsors," said architect Bill Weiner, who attended as a teenager. "I won it one night and I remember I got a bunch of stuff that seems pretty funny now -- loaves of bread, pots and pans, some dishes -- things a teenager wouldn't even take now." It was on the Municipal Auditorium stage that Hank Williams built his reputation in the early 1950s, followed by Johnny Cash, Slim Whitman and Johnny Horton. Elvis Presley started out earning $18 a show at the Hayride. Three years later, for his final performance, the show had to be moved from the 3,200-seat auditorium to the State Fair Grounds for the 10,000 teenage girls wanting to see The King. "The gyrating rotary troubadour was seldom if ever heard by an audience, screaming every time he moved," the Shreveport Times reported the next day. "One of the finest displays of mass hysteria in Shreveport history." It was at the Hayride in 1956 that producer Horace Logan tried to quiet the frenzied

Menard "the Cajun Hank Williams" - making rocking chairs when not on the road. 3) Sleepy La Beef - has been known to play non-stop for over 90 minutes, ask Tom Lewis. 4) The Hackberry Ramblers - I believe the oldest band in the country. 5) Wanda Jackson - saw her on tour w/Rosie, she was excellent. Hope this helps. Kate. I've got to write a short article about what the lives of famous or historical people looked like at later key ages, particularly after 50 (examples include: Frank Lloyd Wright, Sidney Greenstreet - even Philip Glass, who apparently was a plumber until he hit 40). Musical suggestions would be appreciated (interesting non-musical examples too, for that matter). Twang example: Don Walser Thanks!
Clip == G. Jones - Album Hold/40 yrs of White Lightning/Tour
Hi folks, FYI - The Tennessean has daily Jones updates and related stories at the following URL: http://www.tennessean.com Here's one from yesterday which mentioned George's 40th anniversary of "White Lightning" entering the chartsproof positive that time sure does fly. *Jones' album on hold while he recovers * By Jay Orr / Tennessean Staff Writer March 9, 1999 George Jones and his wife, Nancy, were supposed to host a dinner at his home tomorrow night for 30 country radio deejays. Instead, Jones will be at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he continues to recover from injuries suffered Saturday when his Lexus sport utility vehicle crashed into a concrete bridge abutment on Highway 96 near Franklin. That Jones is eager to play his new recordings for country radio decision- makers is significant. Although the 67-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member continues to have a strong fan base, which allows him to tour regularly, country radio stations have all but stopped playing his new singles. "I don't think many radio people have been invited to George's house during the last few years. This is how confident we are about the quality of his new stuff," says Evelyn Shriver, president of Asylum Records, the label that will issue the next Jones album. Work on the new album will stop until Jones can participate again in the decision-making process, Shriver says. "I don't want to do anything until George can discuss it with me, and that probably won't be for a while. I want this to be George's album. I want every moment of it to be what he wants," the label chief says. Jones' booking agent, Reggie Mac of Associated Talent, is rescheduling "22 or 24 dates" that Jones would have played through the middle of June, including an April 30 concert at the Ryman Auditorium with Allison Moorer. "Other than the Ryman (which would have gone on sale this Saturday), all the dates were sold out," Mac said yesterday. "Everybody's been very understanding, and we don't anticipate losing any of the dates," Mac said. "In a situation like this, ticket-holders usually hold on to their tickets. If they've got good seats, they want to keep their good seats." Jones normally works around 80 dates a year, said Mac, who has booked the "Possum" for 11 years. Only about 10 to 15 dates remained open for 1999. Jones would have begun his regular touring schedule this Friday at a 2,500-seat hall in Jim Thorpe, Pa. Through June, the man once dubbed "No Show" Jones was scheduled to appear in 11 different states, working three to four weekends at a time, alternating with 10-day layoffs. Rescheduling the spring dates probably will mean Jones will not do his normal West Coast run in the fall, Mac says, making that swing next spring instead. Jones' first No. 1 country single, White Lightning, entered the country singles chart 40 years ago today, on March 9, 1959. The song stayed at No. 1 for five weeks. Shriver had hoped to link the June release of the new album to the 40th anniversary. "I don't think we'll be far off schedule," she says. "That's the truth of the matter."

Nancy wrote: Remember we have to do what the FCC says, we are not in a country that is radio-hip- free. Man, I am in the Bible Belt.. Help me out Just curious, and not trying to bait anyone, but if this had been a show that was *only* available over the Internet, then I believe it would not be under ANY scrutiny, correct? My understanding is that there is no governing body which oversees (limits/controls) what is "broadcast" over the Internet. Good/bad taste, genre preferences aside, webcasting makes is possible to send whatever you want over the Internet and there are no regulatory licensing requirements with the FCC (BMI and ASCAP have Internet license requirements). Along with the lack of FCC regs, the costs for webcasting are much lower (barriers to entry are minimized). All facts/experiences appreciated. I'm finishing up my thesis on this very topic, which even on good days is like a moving target. Thanks in advance for your help, Kate.

**VINCE BELL** Good Things Come to Those......Who Work Their Butts Off!!
Hello everyone, Since she's too "shy" to tell you the good news herself, I'm doing the honors for my friend Sarah. Seems that Vince Bell has just inked a deal with Paladin Records (with Warner Brothers distribution), for his new CD, *** TEXAS PLATES *** The CD will be released on April 13th. WAY TO GO VINCE!! BTW - Let me say that it is absolutely gorgeous! Great writing from Vince, beautiful production from Robin Eaton and .Kami Lyle and Maura O'Connell are all over this CD, providing just the right amount of "feel" to each song, whew! What's it sound like? How's this: "NRBQ meets Townes meets Rikki Lee Jones meets John Sebastian" Get your big ol' rag top Coupe de Ville ready cause it's a cruiser!! One last thang, Vince will be playing in Austin during SXSW on: Sat, Mar 20, 1999 , Midnight Pecan Street Ale House , Austin, TX w/Robin Eaton, Mickey Grimm Friends Enjoy!! Kate.

Re: THE DRAGON'S ROAR (fwd) - Cisco at NEA
..not to burst anyone's bubble here, but we were lucky enough to have seen Cisco play at the Gibson Cafe during the NEA Extravaganza and not only was the guy VERY nice, he went out of his way to pose for pictures before their set and was genuinely flattered by all the attention. (He also showed up at most of the other shows in town that weekend) Any time we ran into him he made a point of coming over and thanking us for coming to his show and just plain ol' talkin' 'bout stuff. Cisco and his band were great! His guitar player came across like a mix of Pete Anderson and Eddie Shaver, very nice stuff! As for Cisco comparisons, I'd put him in the El Vez (probably due to his stature and sideburns) meets Dwight category. Its a great show, enjoy!! Kate. Ian, Thanks for the story. As I suspected, Jesse doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated! Kate. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I had the pleasure of seeing him perform a few years ago up in Glasgow, Scotland, with 'Don McAlister Jr. and his Cowboy Jazz Revue'. Jesse Taylor is a big, strong man, and he could alternately thrash the hell out of the acoustic guitar when the song required it, while, in the next second, switch to playing with the most amazing delicacy and tenderness. Beautiful to listen to, and to watch. That same night, he was wearing black from head to toe, but had on a very nice vest: black (again), but covered with lots of brightly coloured pictures of electric guitars. From first sight, it was clear that the guy meant business ...

From the Where Are They Now Department
Hi folks, Does anyone out there know the whereabouts of John Miller (recorded w/Rounder and Blue Goose) or Peter Stampfel (Bottlecaps/HMR fame). I thought I'd heard Miller on an E-Town show a while back and mentioned living out on the West coast, true? I still play "Biding My Time" about once a month. All info appreciated, Kate N.P. Re: steve earle, Jesse Taylor?
Hi folks, Just wondering whether Jesse Taylor made any "best" lists for his fine work over the years (the strong arm of the acoustic guitar world)? If you've ever seen him with Ely you know how his ability to shape a song is unmatched. My two centsKate. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: WellDel said Earle was a good guitar player. Whether that's gushing, or whether that translates to "one of the best guitar players in country music," never mind *the* best (male) acoustic guitar player is open to interpretation.
Re: Fulks and the Hollies
...Please add The Who's "Squeezebox" to the list of fine Fulks' performances (this was sung during his most recent visit to Johnny D's). Kate. We have now heard Robbie Fulks perform Dancing Queen and the Hollie's ol' "On a Carousel" electric.

Fwd: End of an Era...
Hi folks, Thought you'd like to know about the last show from the "rockin' banks of the River Charles" with Greg Reibman (Rockin' With Greg on WMBR, 88.10FM, MIT, Saturdays from 10-noon). For music fans living in Boston/Cambridge, he's become an institution of sorts on Saturday mornings. He's going to be missed like crazy and if anyone will be in the area this Saturday, please stop by - BTW - I'm the official "bouncer" for the rockin' sendoff! Kate. Dear rockin' person: I can't believe it but it's come down to this: Twenty years and several thousand plays of various Jonathan Richman songs later, I am about to do my last radio show on WMBR. As I've mentioned on the air, leaving the station was one of the most difficult decisions I ever made and that was before I received the flood of phone calls and e-mails for rockin' folks like yourself. Your support and kind words have meant so much to me. I can't thank you enough. Leaving WBMR is bittersweet, to say the least. I'm looking forward to having my weekends free (I've heard from lots of listeners who say they clean their house, listening to "Rockin' with Greg'' who knows, maybe I'll clean mine for a change). But I'm going to miss playing my favorite songs for you each week and the thrill of discovering new gems by new artists that, sadly, may not be heard anywhere else. And I'm going to miss the calls from you all too. Anyway, if you're free this Saturday (2/27) I'd like to invite you to join me at the station between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm for one final "pat on the back" and a toast at noon. And if you can't make it, I'd like to thank you one last time now, for the support and the friendship. Always keep rockin' Greg Reibman P.S. WBMR is located on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, halfway between the Mass. Ave and Longfellow bridges. It's a big building with pillars and tennis courts right next too it. (Nothing else looks like this, and it's usually not too hard to find parking on Saturday morning.) We're in the basement of that building, enter using one of the side doors. The Kendall Square T is the closest stop. Ames Street is the cross street next to the tennis courts. If you need more info check out http://whereis.mit.edu/bin/map?locate=walker or write back. P.S.S. Re: New Boston P2ers (Was: Re: Fwd: End of an Era...)
...blushing as I write this, I've been remiss in welcoming two of Boston's finest to the list, though fortunately they've had no reluctance about introducing themselves anyway. Kate Martins is everywhere, with the eclectic taste I could only wish for. = Obviously, Bob and I are longtime members of the Mutual Admiration Society, keep up the good work and thanks for the kind words! Barry Brooks has also popped up -- the man's collection not only of music but also of clippings and related material make for an amazing library. I remember Billy Joe Shaver's amazement at seeing all the stuff Barry had brought that Shaver had never seen. = Not to mention EVERY Lucinda clipping, too. And yeah, that's pretty big news about Rockin' with Greg. The only bright side is that it makes it easier to listen to "Hillbilly at Harvard." And while that's no small matter, Greg's departure is still going to leave a vacuum in the scene. If he remembers me from that show, Kate, tell him I'm toasting him too. = Agree, however MBR has bumped John Funke's "Backwoods" into the 10-noon slot so it'll still be a "tough" 2hrs for music junkies. We miss you out in clubland, Johnny D's hasn't been the same since you split for Chi-town :-( See you in a few weeks. Kate

Re: Chris Gaffney Cowboys to Girls
OK.now that someone has mentioned Chris Gaffney and his wonderful CD, "Loser's Paradise," I have to confess that I'd love to hear George Jones record "The Man of Somebody's Dreams" for his new CD on Asylum! Chris and Rosie do a wonderful job with it, but, George (w/Patty Loveless) could make a whole lotta folks cry in their beer for sure! I think it'd outsell "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and put the man back at #1. Any comments? Kate. In a message dated 2/19/1999 10:53:26 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: [Matt Benz] Yes, yes, and Gaffney was the guest on stage. Thank you much. Very cool cover. Here's the info: Yes, the Sutler show is still on. The lineup is Jim Lauderdale, Duane, Rosie Flores, Bill Lloyd, Joy Lynn White, and many others. $10; silent auction at 6:30. Show starts at 7. It will now be a benefit for the family. To all you P2'ers out there who will be attending Nashville's NEA this weekend. Here's a big invite out to Wolfy's on lower Broadway. Crowd of One will be playing Friday night( 10pm) along with other roots/rock acts Duane Jarvis and Victor Mecynee. Hope to see you there Speaking of Jarvis, I'm hearing from Marvin Etzioni that he and Jarvis and others (Lucinda? maybe) are gonna be participating in a memorial gig for Donald Lindley on Sunday in Nashville. I suspect it could be quite the special engagement. Hunkered down in way too many deadlines..

Re: Richard Thompson
O.K. I'll bite. Richard Linda Thompson, Lupo's, Providence, RI - Shoot Out the Lights Tour, '81/'82?. In spite of having had a HUGE fight before the show (in which Linda reportedly whacked Richard over the head with a bottle, a cut over his eyebrow was visible) the show was phenomenal. I think the fight made every song all the more meaningful, emotional and cutting. Also great was a guitar show at RISD a couple of years before that where RL played in front of about 150 die-hard fans. The man can play, PDLS is gorgeous! Henry the Human Fly will forever be my favorite! K.
