[RCSE] Vendors at NATS?

2008-07-02 Thread Paul Naton

I'm trying to find out the names of any vendors that will be selling stuff at
the upcoming
NATS.

The AMA store has some overstock of some soaring items and they are interested
in
having a soaring related vendor at the event help them out selling the items.

Please contact me if you can help identify any sellers.

There have been some shake-ups at AMA concerning retail items.
You will no longer get a catalog before christmas!

Thanks!

That's what education was for. We're supposed to know how to read and write effectively. If we can't write with nuances, we can't write jokes.

If someone is reading one of my posts and steam starts coming out of their
ears, most of the time they can most easily remedy this by reading it again,
carefully. It's not that I don't make a big mistake once in a while, but
generally I'm just trying to lead the reader a ways down the garden path before
revealing the punchline. Also, generally, I read the messages over several
times before sending them.

(hint: If you see words like "organic", "idiot", "goat", "vegan", "cannibal",
"unobtainium", "bozo", etc., be suspicious. Chances are I'm pulling your leg. Unless I'm talking about CJD, kuru, etc. Or
politics. Come to think of it, is there much difference?)

I agree, but most do not read, but rather skim the text, read what they
think they are reading, and then answer without knowing even their side.

My addage: It is better to not answer and let people think you are an
"idiot", than to reply, and remove all doubt.

[RCSE] SASS Help!! "Keeping Sixty Acres South for the Greater Community's Good"

2008-04-18 Thread Paul & Rickie Clark

"Thank You!" LSF Officers for the fine post to the King County Council
Members! Below is _some_ of my edited post! We need to let them KNOW
NOW that SASS is US !! NOT just them and this is an activity that DOES
involve all ages and families. I have done it in my own way and you
can help by posting your own messages! "I have researched RCHLG/DHL
history for a book on its relatively short existence--Since 1979.
Whereas the beginnings are a Southern California phenomena it quickly
developed exponentially into an international part of RC Soaring.
After a yet long ongoing process there will be be a World
Championship in Europe in 2009 or 2011 under the auspices of the
Commission Internationale Aeromodelling/Federation Aeronautique
Internationale (CIAM/FAI), and will be attended by a number of our US
pilots. From the1979 origin, through the innovator (known in the
hobby as The Ole'Buzzard, Dave Thornburg) attending a CIAM/FAI World's
Championship for RC gliders (similar to the larger gliders flown at 60
Acres) with his prototype RCHLG in France there was the subsequent
birthing of RCHLG in Europe. One of today's prominent Japanese in RC
Soaring was attending the same international competition and returned
to Japan and introduced RCHLG here! I have been a part of its
becoming here in Japan what at one point was called /Hand Launch
Mania/. *Meanwhile* !! Three parties particular to SASS became a
*/force'majeure/* in this international community of RC sailplane
enthusiasts with their introduction of MAJOR changes in the hobby
through launch technique and in aircraft design, an evolution in
launch technique that required equally radical design changes. The
change from a so called/ javelin launch/ (physically distressful) to
the /discus launch/ (tripling launch heights and making it possible
for youngsters, the less physically endowed and especially older
pilots to enjoy flying) revolutionized this art-form when one SASS
pilot, Dick Barker, showed up at the 2000 International Hand Launch
Glider Festival competing with his own innovative design and discus
launching. At the next year's IHLGF everyone was doing it; and I was,
too, with a Dick Barker custom built sailplane !! Phil Pearson,
another SASS pilot who had introduced the Side Arm Launch, SAL, the
precursor to the DHL, continued with advancing the RCDHL design which
became a hobby standard. /Red /Weston as an entrepreneurial pilot has
been another of the SASS RCDHL pilots responsible for the popularity
of RCDHL and known to us all! The whole WORLD knows what & where 60
Acres IS, we DO, and what has and IS happening there!

"I am reminded of how in Southern California it became necessary for
us across the United States and around the world as a part of the
soaring flight community to come together over against developers and
fight to maintain Torrey Pines as an American ALL gliding flight
HISTORICAL site (so designated today) for Full-Scale, Para Sailing
and RC Soaring as it is as historic to sailplaning in America as is
Elmira, New York--both are Meccas for silent flight soaring in America
and the WORLD. It is quite easy to understand how you could see the
SASS as just a local group--and as just a bunch of kids who didn't
grow-up playing with their toys--selfishly trying to push their own
agenda--they are a part of us, lobbying for our kids and families! In
our minds, as an international community, let alone the USA, in your
OWN back yard you have a site and a club, the SASS, that is virtually
as important to our RC Soaring community as is Torrey Pines and the
Torrey Pines Gulls, the IHLGF sponsors! The singular nature of 60
Acres as unique to our pastime has been rehearsed for you before--in
that respect, it is not just about being there, it is about its
uniquely meeting meteorological requirements for sailplane flying,
making it one of the best fields in America for RC Soaring, and the
unreasonable possibility of coming up with an alternate site."

Let SASS know we appreciate them; LET KING COUNTY KNOW . . . --Sky
Pilot (Yes! I am still around!!!)

[RCSE] 2.4G lag time reality.

2008-03-07 Thread Paul Breed

One area that makes this fuzzy is the 2.4Ghz add on module.
If the module plugs into the back of what was once a 72Mhz system it
will not gain you any

lag time advantage. It may actually increase the lag time.

As the 2.4Ghz module is reading the pulse stream from the 72Mhz tx
and then sending the commands.

If the TX is natively transmitting 2.4G and does not have a module
then one could
expect the lag time to be better. But if you are using a 2.4G module
in a 72Mhz Tx then no dice.
there is no way for the 2.4G module to know what is happening any
faster than the
PPM pulses that go to the module. This is the same PPM stream that
the RX used to get minus the
RF path. and the RF path is instantaneous in comparison to the 20msec
pulse rep frequency.

PS - on the Open scores it has Cody ahead of Mike for 3rd place, that is
just an alphabetical mistake. Mike took 3rd and Cody 4th after the flyoff,
which was pretty cool if you missed it. Hi-starts, 5 minute tasks, landing
tape... Mike landed a 5:03 with a 96 landing and Cody a 5:00 with a 92
landing if I remember correctly.

[RCSE] YouTube Soaring Video Collection

2008-02-22 Thread Paul Naton
A useful contribution..

I have a large collection of videos on YouTube that I think you all would like
to see.

I have some trailers posted as well as snippets from the how-to series and
various gliding shorts, even some
hot electric 3-D flying.

http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=pnaton

The trailers have been updated with much higher rez versions that play nice.

Waste some time, check em out and subscribe, I put new videos up every week or
so
from the vast RCA film archives.

[RCSE] fun at the cane field

2008-02-10 Thread Paul Perret
I went out to the sugar cane field yesterday for my
first flights on my new 9303 2.4 JR in my Sharon. It
was fantastic conditions with little wind, puffy
clouds, and 70 degrees. Since I usually fly alone, I
had my wife help do a range test before I left home.
So, at the field, I put it together, wiggled the
sticks and launched. This system works great. I did
get, and use, a little capacitor type thing that Todds
Models has on his web site. If these 2.4 systems get a
spike in current use, the receiver can shut down and
take a few seconds to reconnect. This capacitor thingy
solves that problem - so far so good. Big thermals
were abundant. I was even thermaling inverted and fun
stuff like that. I got the switches set up where I
like them and I really like this new radio.
On my last launch I broke the line which balled up and
broke the brake lever on the winch. Oh well, I guess
I'll have to go to a heaver line.
As I tried to leave I got stuck in the mud. The more I
worked at trying to get unstuck the deeper I got. Well
I called AAA who said they would send someone but that
it would cost me because they don't pay if you get
stuck intentionally!!???
I was sitting there waiting as the sun got low and the
mosquitoes started to swarm when all of a sudden there
were thousands of little black birds going after those
bugs. This spurred me to get out my hand launch and
join them. As I flew around, the birds congregated in
a huge swirl above my plane. I flew over that giant,
red setting sun with all those swirling birds over my
plane, and it made a magnificent, memorable picture!
The tow truck did finally get there and get me out,
but not before he got stuck himself! He called me
three hours later at home to tell me he had just
gotten out after being rescued by a bigger tow truck.
Even though I got stuck, it was a great day flying a
the field.

"replacing competition requirement with non-competition tasks that provide a
comparable level of challenge and skill development"

To re-create a "comparable level" to a competition there would have to
be a task that required you to launch on a specific day, at a specific
time, regardless of conditions, with an unexpected field repair, and a
gaggle of bozos to sucker you into some bad air, and a timer who may
or may not read the air correctly and give you bad advice, who will
talk too much and countdown all wrong, and stop the timer a full

wishing the best for you, but most hoping to beat you, and some
playing mind games and/or talking trash to you, and then there is the
added lust for an "I beat Gordy" pin, not to mention wanting to score
higher than all of your other club buddies, all this after having
spent the night in the back of your truck after driving 600 miles and
slowstick nightflying until 3 AM and you are getting a weird rash from

Ben is quite correct. The "Sportsman" program under discussion

[RCSE] RE: Great Ideas

2006-08-16 Thread Paul Emerson

Not sure if this qualifies as "Great" but . . .

Mounting pushrod housings inside a tailboom or fuselage:

With a music wire pushrod, hold the housing in place using neodymium
magnets on the outside of the boom. Then hold the boom upright and
dribble thin CA down the housing (being careful not to get it inside
the housing of course), mist some kicker in there and you are done.
You can then remove the piano wire and put a CF rod in the housing if
you like. Works good on all fuses/booms. Some like to add small wraps
of thread or tape along the housing to give the CA more to bite into.
I find on good etched teflon housing this is not necessary, and it
impedes the flow of CA down the boom.

Nice; how about the rest of us submitting their idea-jewels for something to

Here's a couple:

On F3x fuses with opaque (typically carbon) canopies, I machine a slot which is
long enough to view one of those nifty battery LED's. The slot is offset to one
side such that just prior to launch I can glance at it and not only know PWR is
present, but where it's at.

I then Goop the LED display to the inside of the canopy. A side benefit is that
technically, even if the canopy departs the aircraft on launch/landing it
remains tethered, thus allowing you to score on that round.

The lead material supplied on most imported F3x aircraft, it seems the
prerequisite is to find the absolute cheapest material produced by mankind. The
awg is poor, and the insulation will depart on a hot day. One might consider
replacing it.

The piddly switches supplied with our systems are average at best, especially
for competition use. They have been known to fail. Simply replace the entire
switch assembly with a 2-pin high quality bullet-type connector used to supply
PWR to small electrics, and your servos will see higher voltage. Add to this
that typical bullet-type connectorship has cycle rates in the 100's, which
rivals the original slider switch.

Re: [RCSE] 2M Rambles

2006-08-01 Thread Paul Emerson

I noticed a 2M with "Drela Derivative" airfoils at Sal's site:
http://nesail.com/detail.php?productID=5125
Has anyone seen it in person yet? Looks promising.

On 8/1/06, Daryl Perkins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Dave,

What a great post. Thank you. You're right on about
the MH32 being a poor choice for a 2M section. I don't
like it for open class TD either. Drela has done a
good deal of optimization on sections for us, and he's
got a pretty good idea of what works in the real
world. Definitely a good idea to try some of his
thinner sections on a 2M. The key here would be
LIGHT!!!

I don't particularly like super low A/R 2M's... ala
the Duck. Span loading ends up too high, wing loading
too low... not a good combo. At least not my personal
preference… you get a model that doesn't go
anywhere... AND comes down quickly... woohoo!!!

Your also correct about AUW. My old Lasers used to
weigh in around 31 ounces, and they flew quite well
(for a 2M). People seem to have gotten complacent
about 40 and 45 ounce 2M's. Of course they fly fine...
they're just pre-ballasted. Especially when you're
only flying against other 40 and 45 ounce models. But
remember, a 2M isn't much larger than a HL model.
They're what? 25% larger? Who wants to thermal a 30
ounce HL? Or even a 20 ounce HL for that matter?
That's tremendously over simplified, there are many
other factors here, but you get my point. We can't
build our 2M's light enough.

Mike L's 2M Aegea weighed in at I think about 25
ounces (before the boom broke), and it was probably
the best flying 2M I've ever seen. In the early
morning light lift rounds, his was the only model that
even recognized lift, as the rest of the field flew
right through it and underneath him without even a
bobble.

V-Tails - still... no. The main problem with a V-Tail
is that we all fly differing stability ranges. What I
mean here, is that while I may prefer a less stable
model, you may prefer a more stable model, and a
beginner prefers a ludicrously stable model. Why am I
talking about stability and not CG??? .. same thing
for this discussion. You can't just oversize the V to
be correct in yaw, and expect the model to fly right.
It'll be too stable for me, and maybe for you... but
perfect for the beginner. When I flew Super V's, I
couldn't get the model "loose" enough. I'd cheat the
CG way back, until I was happy with the performance
and flight characteristics in pitch, and the model
would tuck hard in slow cruise (harder as the speed
increases). Not great for a TD model. S... that's
an indication that the model is overstabbed or too
stable. So, I had to cut the V's down... then all my
yaw stability went away. V-tails are a compromise at
best. You can play games with the V angle to get it
closer, but I've never got one right. They're fine for
a one dimensional model - ala a slope racer, cuz
you're never hanging the model on the wing. You don't
see Drela's design's being V-Tails, do ya? ;-)

The design challenges for a 2M are rather complex, and
this makes it sorta fun. There are many compromises to
be made. A/R vs. Area. Cruise vs. Hang. Cross tail...
or... uh cross tail. (I'm not even gonna mention a
damn V)

I'm going to do a new 2M in the next few months. I'm
not just going to focus on the wing, but on the fuse
as well. We're seeing gains in F3B with small cross
section fuses. I think I can shave some weight, and
some drag here as well.

I've broken up with multiple women in the last few
months... need to do enough models to keep up with the
naming process... ;-)

Possibly "Lil Beeotch" - we'll see

Re: [RCSE] After the 2006 NATS - 2 Meter Comments

2006-07-28 Thread Paul Jacobson

Was anyone flying the Mark Drela designed Aegea 2M at the NATS?

The design for the Aegea 2M was posted to the Allegro-Lite group in
August 2002, so it seems to be contemporaneous with the Mantis 2M &
the Organic 2M.

A very fine post in its entirety, Jim. 2-Meters is a world unto
itself, and when good flyers go at it, it's a very worthwhile
event. You have to launch to the moon, then find lift quick,
because the little planes come down in a hurry and don't travel
well if you hit sink.

The dominance of the Duck design seems to me to have some
interesting implications. U.S. flyers generally have disdained V-
tail airplanes, but the Duck shows that they can learn to love 'em
if the tail is big enough. Additionally, the Duck has a fairly low
AR wing and is pretty heavy; these characteristics don't match the
current fashion, but in this class they seem to prove out to be
best in practice.

It would be neat to see a resurgence of interest in 2M, just to see
what other design tweaks might come along. It seems that there
hasn't been much design activity in this class since the Organic
and 2M Mantis. Maybe there's a world-beater out there to be
discovered.

Danny,

I'm pretty sure it's actually every six months... the same stuff gets

this is the 3rd time these "old chestnuts" have been dragged out for

Re: [RCSE] Water-ski Aerotow?

2006-03-29 Thread Paul Emerson
Meh. My Grandpa claimed that he and his friends once tried this stunt:

They would transfer a water skier being towed on a boat to a tow rope dangling from a small plane. This was attempted on the Bourbeuse river in Missouri which is one of that state's most twisted and meandering rivers - it winds for nearly 100 miles with an air distance of only 27 miles, all of it within Franklin County. They also built a ski jump that was only used once - it was too steep and the first attempt resulted in someone getting slammed into the ramp. They cut it free from it's anchors and let it drift over the dam at Noser Mill.

Re: [RCSE] Supra #42 problem

2006-03-27 Thread Paul Emerson
Dear #1 through #99,

I was within 20 feet of the "crash" - remember I was out there hunting
for a dropped pocketknife. The plane tapping the wires and landing in
the tilled dust that is desert farm land was softer than any
competition landings I have seen.

I would recommend that the saddle area be beefed up before y'all go
flying again.

[RCSE] How-To Video Ideas

2006-03-20 Thread Paul Naton
Ya, how to's can be a bit dry, and glider how to's can be bone dry!
It's a hard subject to teach, technical, fussy, and some methods are slow to
show.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not the most congenial mesmerizing talk show
host, buy hey,
I know my stuff and can demonstrate this subject in a way most can understand.

I've filmed some of the most knowledgeable guys in the sport and not one
would be a great public speaker or bubbly host, but man, they will blow you
away with
their experience and know-how.

Getting in front of the camera and being coherent is SO difficult. I respect
those pro TV guys
way more now than I used to!

Ed's right, skip the banter and flash, and show me the goods. A smooth flowing
narrative and
covering the small details is vital. Some of the how-to productions I've
studied were 80% fluff and 20%
useful info.

If you have some ideas on how to improve glider how-to's, George and I would
like to hear them

Got any idea's for future instructionals? Would like to hear of those too.

I'm working on some cool new DVDs which will be out by May.

My new Performance Tuning instructional should keep you all happy until then.

[RCSE] Re: Interest in Soaring [Was:] Model Aviation Control Line???

2006-03-02 Thread Paul Emerson
>>So the question is, what happened to the interest in RC Soaring.

Bottom line: The interest in RC soaring has been replaced by the
instant gratification of the electric park flyer.

Things impeding the interest in Soaring:
1) Need a big field close to home (urban sprawl has eliminated safe
soaring here, I drive 80 miles to fly in peace)
2) Soaring learning curve is higher, takes longer (Electric foamie
learning curve: throttle up, crash; throttle up, crash; throttle up,
crash; throttle up, crash; throttle up, LOOK DUDE I can hover!)
3) Expense: If you develop a real interest in Soaring, the expenses
soon start to add up: Good plane, good TX, good servos = $1500 and up.
Plus you gotta launch it somehow.
4) Intimidation. New guy sees pilots that are soaring $2k worth of
carbon fiber, expresses an interest, and they point him to a 2M balsa
kit. "That's how we all started."

Those who truly love soaring will stick with it. The rest will be
shooting us down with their slo-sticks from their backyards.

And as for all the CL articles in the AMA mag: I have been an RC
observer/participant most of my life and I have never ever seen a CL
model in the air or on the ground. Imagine my surprise when cracking
open the mag and seeing 3 or 4 different varieties of the mysterious
CL.

Well we had a nice day of challenging air, I flew my Giant (third outing
with it) and I think it showed its abilities to really range around and to work
tough tight blowing bubbles. I am still learning a lot about it.

I couldn't seem to get my eye on the spot so hung in all day with 25's
(landings were 25, 50,75 and 100 point measured spot) which sounds pretty
bad but the radius of the spot to 25 was 10mm...so you really had to be on.
:-)  The Pike Giant is really making life tough for me! I love the Superior
wing but the speed of the Giant wing and its ability to shoot wayyy out is kind
of sexy :-) I'm not using a skeg, just in case I decide to make my bide for the
F3J worlds :)

Rick Kuburis with a home field advantage ended up victorious using a home
brew secret weapon design, there was no way anyone was going to beat him today,
he was a machine. He was so far in the zone that at one point he was
putting Ketchup on a hot dog during his landing.

Rick Eckels used his own formula for scoring the man on man event, which
has something do with sacrificing a chicken and generous use of power
eraser.

We went thru the whole day without a broken line and I don't think we had a
delay between groups of more than ...well just enough time to let the birds
circling to get wayyy down wind :-)

Jim McC came up to join us and had hopes of getting even from our last
meeting here, but a last round of really stinky air sent him back down south
with dreams of next time.
Allan Parsons (yep the I Robot guy) really had his Fusion working on
steroids, some of the best launches and reflex runs I have ever seen with a
bagged plane...it really is one of the top contest ships...still.

I timed for one of the veterans during the last round, he flys a Genital
Lady and I think he hadn't had a round over 1 1/2mins all day, I got him settled
down and he went for a huge launch with a ping at the endhe was light on the
pedal but really controlled his energy and I think it was the highest I had ever
seen one of those balsa birds ever launch..and he even got a ping!  Hank is
not 30years old :-)  He had been a full size DG owner for a lot of years,
but his eyes and thumbs had had better days, but that last flight he managed
energy and followed the river of air and had it spec'd without a turn.  At
just over a minute left, we were talking about how great it was going to be to
hit that 100 to cap off the flight...when a clubmate came shooting across with a
NSP Edge, T boned the GL and shredded it.  Both planes were too far out to
be able to judge depth and proximity so no foul on either partthe GL parts
worked their way to Terra Firma and the day ended with a slight bummer
and a great story for the BBQ restaurant afterward ;-)

Me, always a bridesmaid down here it seems. ;-)  Had her in the bag
but got hammered with a line tangle and then a late launch and lousy thumbing
:-)

Sure wish you could have been there too!

Re: [RCSE] Carbon Supra #48 flies - weight < 61 oz !

2006-02-17 Thread Paul Jacobson

Hi Michael,

you might like to take a look at:

http://www.teaser.fr/~osegouin/aeromode/servos.phtml

The program is in french but looking at the screenshot it seems
pretty straight forward.
The data includes "courant maximal" which should give you the info
you need.

I'll add the observation that the manual for the Schulze 8.35 rx
recommends that no switch be used between battery and rx, and that
use a battery with two sets of heavy duty wires connected to the rx
to ensure best performance.

cheers
Paul

Anybody know the full stall current draw of the popular servos?

At the SWC I saw no less than three batteries go sour on 3 different
stopwatches (luckily only one was during a task). Don't check your
stopwatch battery before you fly, just replace it.

Everyone here is wondering about what fun everyone had at the SWC this weekend...well at least I think that's what all the chatter is about(they tend to speak Spanish here).

In any case I think one of them was talking about how well Don Richmonds internal pushrods worked on his Supra, and how he was getting a lot of envious looks from other guys who have 'outies'.

And I think there was some funny reports on wild landings and flip oversbut again, it was all in Spanish.

I guess if you 'add em' all up, the comments sounded pretty positive :-)

Re: [RCSE] SWC

2006-02-11 Thread Paul Emerson
I left before the scores were posted today. The first round was 4
minutes and then there were 4 rounds of add-em up with a total of 33
minutes. However things were running behind so they shortened it to 3
rounds of 23 minutes (my numbers may be a little off).

Weather was nice with a little breeze pushing the thermals away from
the field pretty quick and causing a few to land off-field.

The real excitement was a plane hitting the power lines south of the
field on friday. And then an Icon getting fried on the same power
lines today. The icon hung there for a while burning until it finally
burned right through the power line, bringing it down. (both times
cutting power to the whole farm community and getting the local
utility company scrambling some trucks out - neither were happy with
us) I don't know if you have ever seen a plane fry on the wires but it
makes an awesome flash/noise/mushroom cloud of black smoke!
BAP

Today after the Icon cut the power, I was out by the end of the field
looking for a dropped pocketknife when I heard a plane hit the power
lines again right behind me! Luckily the power was off, or this
Cherry-red Supra woulda been BBQ ship #3. It was unscathed.

So far as the Supras go - they fly well, but without the anticipated
miraculousness.

I found the pocketknife BTW.

I'll second that request !!??  I NEED one,

From: "Jim Deck"
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>  Subject: Old Graupner Sailplane
Part?
I just acquired an old Graupner sailplane.  It
has a T-tail with a two piece plastic mounting device the allows a
full-flying stab to rock on top the fin.  This plastic piece is
broken and appears to have been a weak link in the design.  Does
Graupner (or perhaps someone in this forum) stock old bits and
pieces?  The sailplane is pretty attractive and looks like a good
sport flyer so I'd like to restore it. Thanks in
advance,    Jim Deck

Radio Carbon Art will be at this weekend's AMA show in Ontario. I'll be
joining Bob and the crew at the huge Soaring USA booth all three days.

Come by to visit and to pick up those DVDs you have been wanting to buy at a
special show price. Looks like we'll have a LCD projector at the booth this
year as well.

Might even have a demo showing of the new Performance Tuning DVD which will be
shipping soon after the show.

See you there!
