[Talk-hr] Prvi mapping party u Slavoniji i Baranji
Bok svima, krenuli smo u organizaciju prvog OpenStreetMap mapping partya u Slavoniji i Baranji. Postojeća karta: http://osm.org/ go/0KJ2Jmt Datum: subota, 17.4.2010. Vrijeme: 10:00-10:30 vrijeme okupljanja Mjesto sastanka: ispred prometnog mosta dr. [OSM-talk-be] Mapping party Deinze
Hi all, Here is the final scheme for the mapping party on Sunday April 18. - 9u45am till 10am: for people who like that, we gather at the railway station of Deinze. This is not explicitly necessary: I have made a cake diagram, so people who prefer that can start at another moment can just pick their piece and go on the road. Here you can take a peek at it: http://maps.google.be/maps/ms?hl=nlie=UTF8msa=0msid=115156197198343391457.0004820fe7d0e9e1e145bll=51.007598,3.552532spn=0.063187,0.177326z=13 . Of course they should tell me well ahead about their plans to avoid double work! Some pieces are more fit for exploration by bike: e.g. Petegem aan de Leie has a lot typical bike short-cuts (not on google maps of course) Other stuff can be done by car - more rural areas - but personal I prefer doing everything by bike. I hope that every-one brings his own bike! I also experimented with export of the cake diagram: you can find the result on http://users.edpnet.be/kknecht/gmapsupp.img* *(for garmin) and http://users.edpnet.be/kknecht/deinze.osm contains roughly the same data but via GPS babel you can export it yourself to your own preferred format. - 10am till 1pm: we go on the road! - 1pm-2pm: we have lunch, since we do the data processing at the de Ceder (a bit outside of the center in Astene (Parijsestraat), we might as well gather there. In the cafe there you can only get drinks there so why not bring your own lunch package? We can talk a bit and make sure we don't start thirsty :-) - 2pm-5pm: hide behind the computer screens: please try to bring your own laptop! It would very nice if every-one willing to join, sends me an email to confirm, with some info on how they think to get in Deinze and how to explore the area. Do you have a laptop? May be I can split the cake in more pieces do more accurate sub-division? Planning is everything! Please, also give me feedback about the planning: I rather prefer it now then to here you complaining on the day itself! I would have liked to get hold of the trackers which are managed by OSM belgium but although I have asked twice and offer to pick theme up, I did not any reaction. A pity: some people are willing to join but have no tracker! Ivo? Best, Kenny ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

Re: [OSM-legal-talk] OSM content on locked platforms
Interesting, the CC BY SA quote does rather suggest that such an application is not CC BY SA compliant. Two linked observations almost lead me to believe that the closed nature of a platform is irrelevant, what is important is the effort made by the individual developer to keep data/images free and open: 1) Is it not the closed nature of the application rather than the operating system? For example, If there was a button such as email me the current map tile, that would still be Apple conformant (I expect) as the application is still locked to the phone and CC-BY-SA conformant as the map is copiable. 2) If the London A-Z is published as a good old book, no mechanism is provided for exchanging the work with others. They don't give you a photo copier. So the acid test would be whether there is a deliberate attempt to block access to the copying the map (rather than the application) at a reasonable but not necessarily identical level of quality ? Another reason to change to ODbL? :-)Here the A-Z map would most likely be a Produced Work which can be under any type of license. The application developer would be obligated to make the underlying data available, via an open download that does not require an an iPhone. The one area that is still up for community guideline development is to what extent the in-memory transformation process he used should also be made available. Mike At 12:36 AM 3/04/2010, Frederik Ramm wrote: Hi, a recent discussion on talk-de has unearthed an interesting question with regards to iPhone/Appstore and other locked platforms. You will have to correct me if I'm wrong about the technical aspects of the Apple product range, since I am firmly on the Cory Doctorow side when it comes to iSomethings. But as I understand it, the iPhone is a platform that does not allow you to easily exchange software or data between devices. You can send someone an email to his iPhone but you cannot send them an application to install, and you cannot even send them, say, a new dictionary for the word processor software unless that word processor software explicitly has a feature that provides for such exchange. Now let's assume someone publishes, for a price, an application called the London A-Z for the iPhone, which is basically a map viewer with a data component, all data being derived from OSM and stored in the application. Now, CC-BY-SA requires that whoever buys this application should have the full right to make derivative works (of the data), pass it (the data) on, etc.etc., and indeed it also says: You may not distribute, publicly display, publicly perform, or publicly digitally perform the Work with any technological measures that control access or use of the Work in a manner inconsistent with the terms of this License Agreement. If I understand things correctly, then the whole iPhone/Appstore/Apple operating system combo is just that - a technological measure that controls access and use of the work, because you cannot retrieve the work from the iPhone without jailbreaking it, and you cannot install it on another iPhone without jailbreaking that. I would be interested in your thoughts on the legal situation here. Is distributing an OSM-derived data set on such a closed platform still CC-BY-SA conformant? Of course by jailbreaking it you violate Apple's license conditions... - I mean it's not the software provider's fault that only DRM'ed software goes on the iPhone. Or is it? This also leads to interesting follow-on questions, namely (a) what would the ODbL say in a similar case? (b) is it in our interest - in the interest of open data - to allow such distribution of our data through closed platforms? I believe that you are correct. As you describe it cc-by-sa is not allowed on iStuff due to technological measures. One might argue that making the work available outside the iPrison then becomes consistent again and satisfies cc-by-sa. Mike Collinson's suggestion of a button in the application might satisfy everybody. (a) what would the ODbL say in a similar case? ODbL v1, by comparison, explicitly requires this out-of-band distribution of the unlocked work to be compliant with OdBL 4.7b (b) is it in our interest - in the interest of open data - to allow such distribution of our data through closed platforms? I believe it is in our interest to not prohibit any field of endeavor. In this case we shouldn't deny a developer their platform of choice. No special additional restrictions for iPrison. But no special reduction in obligations either. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Such a solution shouldn't need much extra CPU power. As you can see there are lots of implementations that don't use much CPU power, but there is still nothing implemented :( Who is saying that it doesn't take much CPU? As one of the developers who knows the code, this is a hard problem. Firstly from a UI perspective. Secondly from a backend implementation perspective. As currently whether a changeset is big is determined on the fly before being output, and isn't something that is stored or calculated at the database level, it becomes really difficult to calculate the list of small/big traces, hence why it isn't implemented. Third, you'll also find that there are big changesets that contain changes in that area, so you may actually be interested in them. Bots still make usage of history and monitoring for changes and also vandalism monitoring impossible :( I think you'll find that tools like ITO World's OSM Mapper would be a better fit for the problem that you are trying to solve. Shaun Itoworld has no tools that provide changes as does history of some ares in OSM. OSM history is superior tool for tracking changes but just needs little tweaks. Have you read these previous messages: Wikipedia requires accounts used for automated editing to have a bot flag. This information is then used to add Bs next to Bot edits in history/watchlist/... and for a Hide bots filter in these lists. This far down the line, it doesn't look like there are any mappers in the immediate area of which I was talking about. I speak from personal experience - when we first got the Yahoo imagery I enthusiastically traced the nearest largely unmapped area to me (Harlow) from the images. That was several years ago and to this day most of the roads in Harlow exist but are unnamed because nobody has taken up the baton. On the other hand, when I first started in OSM I didn't have a GPS logger. However, I was lucky enough to live in an area where despite having no roads yet in the database we did have fairly good Yahoo coverage. I traced all the roads in a ~2 mile radius. Since then I have had plenty a nice walk around the area naming roads, finding addresses and other POIs. For me it was enough to get over the initial barrier and now the area round me is one of the most complete in the area. I think we can all agree than mass imports of OS data into OSM isn't the way to go, but providing raster images for tracing and comparing can really help. We must of course be careful that people treat it with the caution it deserves - going out and surveying the roads yourself should always be done but quickly getting roads traced/surveyed lets us OSMers get on to mapping the stuff that gives OSM the advantage over the 'competition' -- the POIs, local knowledge, secret footpaths, traffic restrictions etc. -- Matt Williams http://milliams.com ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] OSM Maps on TomTom
Hi All, I wondered if anyone is using a TomTom SatNav with OpenStreetMap maps? I have a TomTom One with UK maps, and would rather like to put a map of Spain on it... http://www.opentom.org looks like it is a good start, but there does not seem to have been much development recently, and there is no mention of a working replacement navigation program for it. Hello Graham, Be aware that the GTK code that draws rotated text (Pango) is quite slow. You can ask Willem-Jan De Hoog who ported gosmore to the maemo. Richard, are you aware that most oddball GPSs are WinCE powered and that OSM has several apps for them. Sometimes you need to browse the HPC-factor forums or the gpspassions forums to see how it can be unlocked (MioPocket is a very nice replacement shell). I recently bought a new Mio. The builtin app is good, but the maps are a bit out dated. So if I compare it to Gosmore + OSM it is actually quite good: Very up-to-date map with cycling features and PoIs, but without house numbers, pretty rendering and a few other features. Give it a year or two and some people will actually consider it to be an upgrade. On a mapping party wiki page(or anywhere else), it's good to mention that sign up isn't required, but it's good to know so the organisers expect people and can make sure to get some GPSes if needed. London and UK events often also create the event on Yahoo's Upcoming website as it is used by gadget and technology geeks. I've seen wiki pages that encourage me to sign up there too so it doesn't look like an empty event, and as I have an account I usually do. It's always good to be knowing what publicity tools are around and be making use of them. Well done Valent. I don't know if the process is still going on, but a couple of years ago I read about a small Mexican town, just south of the US/Mexico border, that was actually getting its mail through the US Postal Service, as well as all road access being via the USA. This was in a stretch where the border was along the Rio Grande River. The river shifted from the channel north of the town to another channel south of town, washing out the road that had led to the Mexican town. Man muss in jeder Faustregel Ausnahmen zulassen.
