[OSM-talk] Who's That? OSM User Names Database
Hi. 2300 users have changed their username at least once. 126 of those did that twice or more. One of the problems with OSM API is that it heavily relies on user names, not even allowing to query users by their identifier. As a result, when a user changes his display name, he virtually becomes a new user, with no history and no links to his past. He even gets new logins in forum and wiki, with clean state! A new service http://textual.ru/whosthat/ remembers. If you see a user in an object history who you'd like to question, but he appears deleted, just enter a part of his name into search box on that site, and you'll get his current display name. For example, this user http://textual.ru/whosthat/?id=347929 has changed his name two times after being caught vandalizing the map. Source code, API documentation and a link to the database dump are here: https://github.com/Zverik/whosthat Also, there was a poll on how to solve the problem of changing display names: http://polls.cc/q35Mva/results/ and a trac ticket: https://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/4671 . Maybe in 2015 whosthat service will become obsolete. IZ ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] Kort Game: Translators seeked!
Yes, you have plenty of possible queries (select by bbox, type, level, class, analysis, user), you can even report to osmose when an error is fixed or if it is a false-positive. Example: http://osmose.openstreetmap.fr/api/0.1/getBugs?level=1b=48.8t=48.9l=2.3r=2.4 Il will list level 1 errors near Paris center. Then you can get details about an error, example: http://osmose.openstreetmap.fr/error/194388509 Osmose frontend code is on gitorious: https://gitorious.org/osmose/frontend Osmose analysis are running mainly on France, but we're adding more and more countries as we have resources (human and hardware). 2013/1/20 Stefan Keller sfkel...@gmail.com Hi 2013/1/20 Christian Quest cqu...@openstreetmap.fr: Any plan to use data from osmose ? Walk under a small tree in the middle of a field? Say goodbye to your lock. On the other hand, my Galaxy S 3 is excellent. Maybe still not quite as good as a dedicated GPS device (probably mostly due to antenna size) but definitely good. It probably helps that newer GPS chipsets can read GLONASS as well as GPS satellites so they typically have over 15 satellites visible to them. Re: [Talk-es] [Imports] [Cat2Osm2] Tool for exporting Spanish Cadastre data in OSM suitable format
But in this case would not natural=water be better suited? After carefully reading the map features page I agree with you. We will review all the water related tag. Well, it's not possible to review them without also looking at the cadastre data. For example, how could I verify that what is in that table as Jardín que se valora should really be tagged as leisure=garden? It's impossible to do so without looking at the data from the catastro. Unfortunately, the raw shapefiles for catastro cannot be redistributed without modifications (the modified can be) and you need a valid electronic spanish ID card to access them but you can access pseudo-vectorial data (a rasterization of the data contained in the shapefiles) through JOSM. Just download any portion of data from Spanish and JOSM will suggest using it. We have made that and LOTS of test with our own towns (and several mappers form the Spanish community have made the same) to interpret correctly most of the Documentation. Moreover, we have been using the data from Ciudad Real for a Engineering Project form almost a year so we have a relative good experience with both sets of tags. It sounds like you are relying on the catastro documentation without checking each feature type with another source. This is an extremely bad idea for two major reasons: 1. It relies on being able to accurately translate the catastro documentation into OSM tags. Documentation is frequently unclear or ambiguous and words may have multiple definitions. 2. It relies on the catastro use reflecting their documentation. I haven't seen a large GIS data source yet where there weren't some differences between the data source and its documentation. My preferred approach is to pick a feature type, find multiple examples of it in the data, compare them with imagery or other sources, then use that information combined with the documentation to determine what to tag it as. We completely agree with you. Moreover, we have made that and more. BUT, and this is and important BUT, we know (because we have talked with persons close to the cadestre service and because we have see it LOTS of times) that the internal consistence of their tagging is scarce. We mean, every civil servant have their own set of tagging rules that do not completely match one with others. Only in big cities seems to be some sort of standardization. So in the end, we have needed to reach a tagging consensus between several zones in order to do not fit the tags to only one civil servant rules. We have made test in several towns of the Canarian Islands, Cantabria, Ciudad Real (the entire province, in this case), Segovia, and several other (by the local community) and we think that we have reach a good consensus. Probably, as other mappers start using it, some degree of tagging tuning should be made in order to reach a bigger consensus. BUT, we insists, this is not a tool to realize automatic imports, all data should be revised by experts mappers before upload, so if any incorrect tag if found it will be corrected manually. The changes in the tagging scheme will only made things easier for the local mappers but (ideally) they will not change the quality of the upload data. It's wrong to say that the catastro have overused it. They do not use OSM tags. They use an attribute that according to the table is defined to mean Suelo vacante, sin construer, or Vacant land without building. This is different than landuse=greenfield. What I mean is that, in the internal rules of some of the civil servants, things like Green Zones inside Cities is tagged that way when they have tags in their own tagging scheme, but more specific in their hierarchy. This is what I mean for overused, they have used it as a wild-card. The same have happen with water related geometries and car parks. The problem arise when, from one place to others, the wildcards did not match. Obviously, there exist problems also to translate tags from one set to the other (mostly because the OSM tag set is A LOT more specific than the cadestre one).

[Talk-ca] Powerlines in Canada
As requested, I would like to give an explaining statement on those Canadian powerlines which I have edited so far. Personally, I was driven by the intention to achieve a similar standard of quality for all parts of the world, including Canada. Until 2012, very small pieces of powerline have been gradually imported from CANVEC database. They did not have any towers. They had intersections with other powerlines which would immediately break electrical devices in reality. In 2012, I have merged and realigned some Canadian powerlines according to their logical layout. As one powerline usually connects two substations, it does not make sense to split it into many small pieces. A typical double-circuit powerline (6 cables) usually has three segments: two feeders at the first substation, one long trunk line between both substations and two feeders at the other substation. A single-circuit powerline (3 cables), which is more vulnerable to outages, directly connects two substations without any feeders. Each circuit has its own entrance to the substation in order to enable a quick response in case of breakdown. Circuits are usually arranged according to their voltage, e.g. 230kV circuits on the West side and 120kV circuits on the East side. Within a substation, one or several transformers are connecting these circuits. How can you distinguish single and double circuits? The following photo shows a typical powerline in Toronto, Canada: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Toronto_Power_Line_L14W_Tower_39.JPG This is a double-circuit powerline: on the left (northern) side is circuit L14W, on the right (southern) side is circuit L13W. L indicates a powerline originating in Leaside Substation, W indicates a powerline arriving in Wiltshire Substation. 13 and 14 are line numbers. L13W;L14W ist the reference for the double circuit running through power tower number 39. On the right side, you can see another single-power circuit (3 cables) called L 15W. All towers usually have subsequent numbers, however, within substations they may have additional letters like 37B. ref=37B would be the appropriate tag for this tower. L13W, L14W and L15W are 115kV powerlines, as 230kV powerlines usually have numbers 200 and 500kV powerlines usually have numbers 500. This numbering scheme applies for Ontario only. In Quebec, powerlines usually have a four-digit number where the first digit indicates the voltage. The following construction announcement displays the power network in Québec City: http://www.hydroquebec.com/projets/pdf/charlesbourg_is.pdf You can see single-circuit 735kV powerlines, double-circuit 315kV powerlines and some single-circuit 69kV powerlines. Le Poste des Laurentides has a northern section for 735kV powerlines, a central section for 315kV powerlines and a southern section for 230kV powerlines. There is a small segment where a 230kV powerline (circuit #2369) and a 69kV powerline (circuit #757) are joint by sharing the same towers, so there is a short double-circuit segment. It would make sense to create a relation for those two powerlines Each voltage was considered as an optimal solution in the year of construction: 69kV lines in 1910, 230kV lines in 1940, 735kV lines in 1970. Changing the voltage would require some billion-dollar investments, so power companies are trying to keep their electrical devices as long as possible for economic reasons. However, HydroQuebec is gradually going to replace its old 69kV powerlines with new, more powerful 230kV powerlines. For example, Poste Lemoilou, a new substation in Québec City, is scheduled to open soon. As you can see, construction announcements contain a lot of useful information that is worth being integrated into OSM. http://www.hydroquebec.com/projects/limoilou.html A single piece of powerline is easier to maintain in case of lifecycle update (e.g. decommission). However, I do not object to the reconstruction of merged powerline segments if you are willing to maintain them. You are invited to add or verify tags for Canadian powerlines which I have described above. Each substation has a label with its (bilingual) name, its address, its operator, and many more useful informations. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Toronto_Gerrard_TS.jpg Even substations of underground cables like Lakeshore Jarvis are labelled. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Toronto_Lakeshore_Jarvis_TS.jpg Yours, cordialement and with best regards, FK270673, also known as mapper #42429 P.S.: Je prie les utilsateurs québecois de me pardonner une annonce anglophone même s'il concerne tout le Canada.

Richard Fairhurst richard@... writes: It's not so much a rendering bug, more a tagging discrepancy. The railway stations in question are those tagged as railway=station; disused=yes There are those who say (and I can see their point) that this is a really dumb way of tagging things. It's effectively saying This is a railway station; OH NO IT'S NOT. It means every single client using OSM data has to know about disused=yes and add an extra processing rule. If you're writing a Mapnik stylesheet, that's an extra condition on pretty much every single rule - disused pubs, disused stations, disused roads, and so on.
