[OSM-legal-talk] Attribution and licensing problems at diverse main map providers
I wonder if we have a strategy how to deal with companies who use our data but don't attribute in the right way or don't adhere to the license terms. In the past we had Apple (still unsolved, at least since April 2012) and Microsoft (using military areas from OSM to blur their imagery), now there is the biggest German map editor (MairDumont) who is not mentioning the license of the used data, nor linking to OSM or spelling out the name (OpenStreetMap). See here: http://www.kompass.de/online-karte.html By rough analysis it seems as if they are using April 2012 data (cc-by-sa) outside German speaking countries, while they use a different (proprietary) source in Germany, Austria and maybe other countries. Their Attribution is unclear in several ways: 1. They don't mention the license (cc-by-sa or odbl), if you click on the license link you get to a page on their website that encourages you to enquire about the costs for a print license, but no mention of any openness. 2. The terms of use-link goes to google (from whom they use the API). - IMHO misleading As far as I have found until now on their map and website there is no link or mention of OSM other than the attribution (c) 2013 Falk, OSM Contributors, (c) 2013 KOMPASS Karten GmbH (DTK600 10). --- OK, I missed the i-link, there is additional attribution, even more confusing: Diese Anwendung baut auf dem Interaktiven Karten-Framework ecMAPS *) auf. I followed the link to hubermedia and clicked on ecmaps-online, also there is no link to OSM nor the name spelled out. What are the concatenation (?) requirements for attribution? Is it OK to generally quote a lot of different map data providers without specifying which part of the map is from whom, and if yes, how could one exercise his right to share if you don't know to which part it applies? And: are we generally willing to try to enforce the license? What are the measures foreseen if someone refuses to do so? cheers, Martin ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Re: [OSM-talk] Mapnik style bug in railway=subway
It may be a data problem... The dashed way is the following: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/207198651 The non dashed one is: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/207198652 This second way is also part of a relation: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/2777287 To me, it looks like this relation is mixing 2 things: - type=route + route=subway - railway = subway The route is fine, but the railway=subway is creating a duplicate with the existing railway=subway that are on the ways themselves. osm2pgsql thus created another line object for the whole subway line which makes mapnik draw the dashed subway line twice... making it looking as undashed in some parts. railway=subway should not be on the route relation. 2013/7/16 Maarten Deen md...@xs4all.nl: I'm not sure where to report this, I hope someone here can point me in the correct direction. Re: [OSM-talk] Analysis and improvement of the OpenStreetMap street color scheme for users with color vision deficiencies
Please do not mix colour and contrast. A well designed colour map which also respects contrasts might perfectly work either with colours or in black and white. Emphasis on *might*! I assume that you mean contrast in lightness, which was what I meant as well. Contrast can mean different things like the contrast in lightness/luminosity or the contrast between colors. You can have a shade of red and one of green that for normalsighted people obviously are different (because of color contrast), but are so similar in luminosity that in greyscale there would be no difference (no lightness/luminosity contrast). With color you have three parameters (RGB, CMY, HSL, Lab, etc.). Colorblindnesses reduce this to two (one color is deficient or missing, the others remain). Greyscale to one (Lightness). This is important when you want people to be able to identify features, not just make out their shapes in contrast to a background. If you restrict yourself to lightness contrast then you are limited to ~5 shades per similarly shaped feature (eg. points or lines). Add color and you have a multitude of that. CVD affected people can see lightness differences just fine and using that is key to CVD safe design. A map that works in greyscale will work for any color vision deficiency, that's the nice thing about it. But you can design a map that works for CVD affected people and fails in greyscale. I kinda lost my train of thought mid-way through but I hope you get what I am saying. Cheers, Hannes ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[talk-au] Who to create a OSM Wikipedia information page
Hi All Thanks to the enormous efforts and patience of a mailing list member, I am gradually battling through the process of creating img files for Garmin on a Windows machine. The process ironically is easier on a Unix cmd style interface as many things work without battling Window style differences, but for better and more likely worse Windows is my operating system as that is what matches my work environment. Also many people use it. Given that I can find no clear guides to creating Garmin img files using Windows machines I would like to document the process and put up a Wikipedia entry on the process. I am not sure how to do this and would like a few pointers such as login and editors to use, and even confirmation that it is possible. I would like to do it now as nothing like writing instructions before you become familiar and start assuming and abstracting away things plus steps that once made your life difficult. Re: [talk-au] Who to create a OSM Wikipedia information page
Brett, I assume that you are referring to the OSM wiki, not Wikipedia: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page If this is the case, you do not need any special editors at all (just your favourite web browser). The first step would be to go to the wiki and sign up for an account. Once this is done you can edit pages, so find a spot in the wiki where you think there should be more information what you want to do and either: 1) add it to an existing page, or 2) edit the page to link to a wiki page with the right title, once that is done click on the link to the new page and edit it with the new information. The syntax for creating headings/links/images etc is rather simple and brief look into the source (button on each wiki page) will show you the syntax. See this page for style guides and hints: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Help:Wiki-Editing Hope this makes sense, Stephen. - Original Message - From: Brett Russell Sent: 07/17/13 02:27 PM To: OSM Australia mailing list Subject: [talk-au] Who to create a OSM Wikipedia information page Hi All Thanks to the enormous efforts and patience of a mailing list member, I am gradually battling through the process of creating img files for Garmin on a Windows machine. The process ironically is easier on a Unix cmd style interface as many things work without battling Window style differences, but for better and more likely worse Windows is my operating system as that is what matches my work environment. Also many people use it.

Proč pak mají cyklotrasy čísla a tur. trasy ne? Skončí nakonec cyklotrasy stejně a nebudou číslované? Ano, i když spíš než systém by stačilo pár rozumných a dostatečně flexibilních best practices. No jo, to je holt systémová nedomyšlenost českých turistických tras. Každý týden nějaká trasa vzniká a nějaká zaniká. Stejně není moc, která by to všechno dokázala uhlídat a inventarizovat (a neštěstí to ani není potřeba). Re: [Talk-cz] čísla turistických tras
Proč pak mají cyklotrasy čísla a tur. trasy ne? Skončí nakonec cyklotrasy stejně a nebudou číslované? Protoze cislovani cyklotras pouziva verejne i jejich spravce, tedy KCT, a maji to k dispozici i uzivatele tech cyklotras, tedy cykliste. Pokud by se nekde verejne vyskytovalo cislovani pesich tras, tak ho samozrejme muzeme take zachytit a ostatne u rozcestniku to take delame pomoci klice ref=*.
