And FW furthermore, why not have the smaller one available for those of FW use who don't need the full install? Oh boy... When I answered the original question in this thread, I didn't expect to have to explain in detail. Ok, first off: Version: 1.391.41 Dnld size: 1.66MB 1.58MB TB exe after install 1.22MB 3.02MB TB footprint in RAM 3.15MB 3.16MB The above was based on the 1.41 official release from the RITLabs FTP site which was 1.58MB. Now, some of the people on this list grabbed the 1.41 from the beta section which was x.xxMB. Whether this was compressed in the (ZIP/RAR) sense, I don't know. I didn't download that one. Now, almost everyone should be familiar with ZIP and/or RAR. These are compression schemes very commonly used on the Internet to minimize download times. There is another type of compression, which is aimed at conserving disk space (ZIP and RAR are for this purpose too, I know, but I'm talking after an application has been installed). I'm not a big programmer, so I'm not going to pretend that I understand exactly what happens, but most-- if not almost all --applications you install have their primary executable compressed. This conserves physical disk space. When you run the application, it uncompresses in RAM, and the rest we all know about (the application is running). RITLabs has in the past released updates where the executable was not compressed. Why? I don't know... I've installed those before too, but my point is/was that the 3MB version of 1.41 dnlded from the beta testers area was an uncompressed executable which means that this is pretty much how the file will be in RAM (don't get started on paginating...) grin If you'd like to prove this to yourself, then use a program called procdump (sorry, I don't have a URL) on TB v1.39. It'll dump out a file that is 3MB which is pretty much an image of how it is in RAM. This file is executable in its uncompressed state. Hopefully this put this issue to rest. A simple search on the Internet should provide as detailed information as you want if this subject interests you. Thanks. Hello users, We've gotten quite a few new members to TBUDL and TBBETA, so just note for those who don't know about it. TBUDL and TBBETA have a rogues gallery set up. This page contains pictures and e-mail addresses for many members of TBUDL and TBBETA. They are cropped to the perfect size for inclusion into your TheBat! address books. You can view the Rouges Gallery here: http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/rogues.shtml I still need more pics! The offer is still open to those who don't have a scanner. Hello Simon, Generally, it's a time/date stamp, but this isn't always the case. For example, using the one you provided, I would venture to guess that the message might have been created at 0231 on 02 December 1997. Re: filtering messages with attachments
Hello Paula, At one point I had a filter set up to kill messages with attachments by filtering on the multipart/mixed; boundary---, but I deleted it ages ago. I'll have to play with it again to see how I did it. What I was originally trying to do was kill filter based on the attachment filename. For example, if someone sent me the "goober.jpg" which was a 3MB image, I wanted to be able to kill filter based on that filename so I wouldn't have to waste time downloading it again. Re: Using Macros for header (%RETURNPATH=...)
Hello Alexander, I haven't been following this thread, so please forgive me if I missed something. I remember back when I first set up TBUDL using TB, and RITLabs was hooking me up with a new binary just about every other day to correct problems I had when setting up the list under TB. One thing I discovered was that some SMTP and some POP3 servers strip the Return-Path from messages. For those long time members, you'll remember getting bounce messages that included everyone's e-mail address whenever a list post bounced from a subscriber. It was shortly after that when RITLabs included the Return-Path header to fix my problem. However, it still wasn't working and we came to discover that my SMTP server was stripping them. I changed SMTP servers, and still had problems. I then also changed my POP3 server and had no problems after that. I noticed you were using 1.41 (final), and I've got some test messages I had done in HTML from 1.41 beta3. All of them included the correct Return-Path header. I also just sent and received a cpl of test messages under 1.42 beta 3, and both of them retained the correct RETURN-PATH statement. I'm still not sure why you're losing them. It might have something to do with being the very first header. Maybe it gets stripped off when it is the first header by your gateway. Re: More on filters
Hello Roy, Definitely, the machine with filters is going to be slower (provided all else is equal), and it gets slower the more filters you have. It's not a reflection on TB, but on the fact that each message must be matched against every active filter. You'll take a speed hit on the complexity of your filters as well. If you have messages being parsed by some external program, or printing hardcopys, or whatever, it's gonna be slower than just a straight move message to folder filter. Kill filters are slow because of the way that they are designed to work. Again, it's not a reflection on TB, but of the inherent dual session requirements. TB must first download all message headers, then match those against kill filters. Those that are a positive match will be skipped and then deleted from the server while the rest of the messages are being downloaded. This happens in the second session TB has with the mail server. I would venture to say that even a single kill filter string would cause the overall filtering system to be slower than twenty move SPAM to trash filters. I've never tested this, but it seems reasonable. Then again, someone with a fat data pipe might be able to manage the D/L of the headers, kill filter, and then D/L the non-killed messages faster than twenty move to trash filters. Could be wrong, but that's what theories are for! grin As you said below, it is true that a filter will perform faster if it has less text to search. i.e. knowing that the string you want to filter on appears only in the SUBJECT line, and setting your filter up to search only the SUBJECT line. If you know where the string is supposed to be, then search only that area because if you are searching in TEXT OR BODY OR SUBJECT, it's a good deal of wasted effort by TB. I have had some instances where I wanted to change that info to the info from another account, but when RITLabs implemented Quick Templates, this was better, because I could also change the sig. Personally, I would like a configurable drop down box for those fields where I could specify any number of addresses regardless of whether I had an account set up with that information or not. This would be a great boon to me as I have over 30 aliases pointing to a single POP3 account for all sorts of different things like my e-zine, UDL subscriptions, newsletter/e-zine subscriptions, submissions, bug reports from my web site etc. Right now, I just use Quick Templates to do all the work, because some of those aliases are used too infrequently for them to justify their own folder, much less an account. Re: Using TB! as a mail server?
Hello Mark, On Thu, 13 Apr 2000 at 10:55:19 [GMT +0100], you wrote: MRH My question is therefore, is there anyway to setup TB! (using MRH this server mode) that would allow me to use TB! as a client away MRH from the office and access my message bases held on my office MRH machine? I believe you are referencing the how-to on setting up TB as a *mailing list* server. This is quite a bit different than having a mail server. There are a few ways in which you could sort-of do what you are asking. 1. By far the easiest, is to use an IMAP compliant mail server for your messages. While TB v1.x doesn't quite support IMAP fully, I have found it sufficient for my needs. Unfortunately, this would be a problem because you said that you have multiple accounts set up to collect your mail from different places to put into the main account. 2. Enable the "keep messages on server" in the account properties at both home and work. This will let you get your mail at work and at home. What you will want to do then is to set up an incoming filter on the home machine with an action of "delete message from server" option enabled. You will have to fiddle around with the filter string, but it shouldn't be too hard. This option also does not help with the multiple account set-up you have. 3. Set up a filter to forward or redirect all incoming mail on your work machine to send to your home e-mail address. This one does address your multi-account set-up, but you will have to most likely include the forwarding/redirect filter in each account. I haven't tested it, but if TB considers moved messages to one account from another account as an incoming message, then you might be able to get away with just having the forward/redirect filter in the main account. I doubt it though. 4. Set up a filter that exports each incoming message to a designated folder, and then ftp those exported messages from home and import them into TB. You'll have to set up this filter for each account you have. With exception to option 1, these aren't the greatest ideas. However, this is what option 1 was designed for; to be able to access your mailbox(s) with all its messages from multiple computers. Re: several queries
Hello lostenroute, On Wed, 26 Jul 2000 at 18:39:04 [GMT -0500], you wrote: l (1) What exactly is it that prevents me from viewing an html l document in The Bat? None of the pictures show and and icon for l netscape points to a URL in The Bat's directory (I think); in any l rate not to the web. If the imaged is HREF'd off your machine to say, a web site, then TB displays only exclamation points. If they HREF'd the attached images, then TB will display them as normal. It was done this way on purpose. One trick spammers use, is to assign a unique ID to an image request in the HTML, so when you open the message, the image is requested from the spammers web site, the unique ID is passed along to them, and they now have a verified "live" e-mail address to sell to other spammers. You're going to find a fairly even split of people on this subject, and if you want to read past discussions concerning this, I suggest you read the list archives. Personally, I prefer it the way it is, but I foresee someone writing a plugin for v2.0 (whenever it gets out! grin) that will get the on-line images for those who want them. l (2) Why are my messages sorted by TIME all of a sudden; this is l useless to me, I want them sorted by DATE. This is covered in the FAQ. All messages received on the current date show only the time. These same messages will show the date as well once the current day has ended. Don't worry, your messages are still properly sorted. l (3) Is there any hope of fixing the bug that causes progressive l indentations of paragraphs if you happen to be at the end of the l wordwrap line and hit spacespace? One does this conventionally l after every period. This has been brought up many times as well, and Steve will be the first to side with you on this one as he also is used to the punctuation space space style of writing. You can't please everyone, and some people (like me) like using the ALT-L to remove the double-spaces from replied messages. l (4) I believe I am signed up as [EMAIL PROTECTED] That is l a pseudonym for the real account [EMAIL PROTECTED] I use the l former for web-based correspondence as, for example, when your l (ritlabs) URL had me sign up to the mailing list. So I can now only l post to TBUDL from Netscape mail, not from The Bat. If I sign up l again from jpcase. . . (using The Bat), I will doubtless get two l copies of all email and that is not acceptable. So, how do I switch l my registration? Or at least un-register by one route (lostenroute. l . .) so I can sign up by the other (jpcase. . .) Unsub the lostenroute address and sub the jpcase address. See the bottom of every message coming from this list for exact instructions. However, a quick fix to your problem is to create a folder for TBUDL messages, and make the reply and new message templates for that folder to have the FROM and REPLY-TO information as lostenroute. This way, you get the best of both worlds-- list messages sent to lostenroute, and the ability to send messages to the list using TB. l Is anyone following this? To get around that, if you want *only* the TO address you specify to appear in the TO field-- even after a reply, then you need to use the TO macro twice-- the first time with no value, as this will clear the TO field. i.e. %TO="" %TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED]" JP PS I also find that Ctrl C will not copy to the clipboard from JP an e-mail. Effective Immediately
Hello users, Over the last few days, Marck and I have received a flood of e-mail concerning the flame wars on the TB lists. New list rule in effect as of right now! Marck, Wolfgang and I are the list moderators-- the *only* list moderators. It is our job to ensure that things run smoothly with the list and its participants. We fully believe that arguments are healthy and that they help to push TB to better places. However, lately, the arguments have been getting personal, derogatory, insulting, and offensive. This is something that we feel strongly about. From now on, if a message is deemed outside of the bounds by the moderators (and only the moderators), the poster will receive a warning via private e-mail. The second time, you will be be banned from the list with no fanfare. If you feel that you must degrade someone in a public forum, then you are a child and will be dealt with as such. If you can't overcome your childish impulses, then you had better send your e-mail privately to the recipient. If you are the recipient of said e-mail, and you don't like it, filter their e-mail to the trash. We're all adults here. Let's start acting like it. For clarification: - Outside the bounds is defined as a post which is personally insulting and/or derogatory. Things such as, but not limited to: You're an ^%*$, or any variant thereof Telling someone to go do something to themselves Telling someone to do something to you Telling someone to go do something to someone else Namecalling Remarking on someone's intelligence, or rather, the lack thereof. You want to be sarcastic, that's fine, you get personal, that's not! And don't be a child and find little loopholes like "You know, some people are unbelievably stupid!" and then defend yourself saying "But I didn't direct it at him/her personally." We'll know the difference, and we'll hold you to it. - Concerning the warnings. We're not going to keep a yearly running tab of who said what, when, and whether it earned them a disapproving glare from the moderators. The time between the warning and a ban will be determined on several levels and on a case-by-case basis to include the severity, impulsiveness, and consensus among moderators. Those of you who have been with TBUDL and TBBETA know that we-- the moderators, aren't heavy-handed, "My way or the highway" people. Those who have been admonished in the past know that we did it fairly, in accordance with "posted" list rules, and with good reason. There has only been one banning in TBUDL/TBBETA history, and we'd like to keep it that way. Thank you. I concluded that the simplest thing for C her to do was reinstall Outlook Express; that should, perhaps, C reset all of the associations. Here is a cut and paste of the last answer I sent to someone on this, and they said it worked for them. ** Unfortunately, this is a problem not with The Bat!, but with OE. When you install OE it asserts its association with .EML files. When you install The Bat!, it also asserts its association with .EML files. This is the normal way of Windows. New software associates itself with the filetypes it deals with. The problem is that OE does not detect that it has lost the association, and therefore never tries to reassert those associations. For instance, if you load IE5, it asserts associations with .htm, .html etc. When you then later install, for instance, Netscape, then Netscape takes over those associations. However, in this case, whenever you remove Netscape, and begin using IE again, it detects the loss of associations and asks if you would like to make IE the default browser again (which re-associates the filetypes.) OE doesn't do this, and I have no idea why. I guess they figure that they are the only game in town and nobody else would use the .EML extension. You might try this. - Open a folder on your hard drive. - Select View then Folder Properties from the menu bar. - Choose the File Types tab. - Scroll down until you see Internet E-mail Message - Click it once, then hit the Edit button. - In the Actions box, select Open, then click the Edit button - Use the Browse button to locate the OE executable, then click OK - Click OK again, and again, and again ** Cheers, Leif Gregory -- TBUDL/TBBETA List Moderator ICQ 216395 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web Site http://www.pcwize.com TBUDL FAQ http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/faq.shtml PGP Key ID 0x8604279A Using The Bat! 1.46 Beta/5 under Windows 98 4.10 Build A on a Pentium III 500 MHz notebook with 128MB. The disappearing act.
Hello users, As Marck mentioned in his last moderator's comment, I am leaving the TB lists for a while. There are going to be some huge changes in my life, and I need to concentrate on those for a couple of months. Hopefully I'll be back after this, and I know Marck and Allie will do a darn good job of moderating/running the lists. There could be no better than these two to leave the list to. They have proven their worth leaps and bounds many times over. Thank you very much Marck and Allie. You'll never know how much I appreciate your efforts. Re: mailto: magic
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and the Subject to equal Subscribe_PCWize. If both of these conditions were met, then you became a new subscriber. So why did I define the Body to contain the text Just_Click_Send? Well, not many people use complex URLs (not including forms), so before I put that text in there, I had people writing all sorts of stuff in the message Body to try and subscribe. This didn't affect my mail filtering one iota, but I was trying to save people from typing in stuff that they really didn't need to. You might have noticed by now that I tend to use the underscore character as opposed to the %20 to separate my text. This is really just a habit as opposed to any real reason. However, I did use some oddball e-mail programs-- back when I was but a young pup --that didn't recognize the %20, so I used the underscore. I also thought it looked much nicer (readability-wise.) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Subject=This%20is%20hard%20to%20read mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Subject=This_is_easy_to_read Ok, so now we know pretty much all the cool stuff there is to know about complex mailto URLs. Here's what fields you can define: TO = mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?[EMAIL PROTECTED] CC = mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject = mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?[EMAIL PROTECTED] Body= mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?[EMAIL PROTECTED] Just a note concerning the placement of a mailto URL in the subject or body; I said above, that you should always encapsulate a URL with and . However the below won't work: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=[EMAIL PROTECTED], so you will have to use the ASCII code for them as below: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?[EMAIL PROTECTED]%3E Well, that's it! I know it was long, but hopefully interesting. Now, you all know that I wouldn't let you go without a real-world usage of complex mailto URLs, so here it is: Would you like to see an equally in-depth article on URLs for other things like HTTP, Gopher, FTP, Usenet etc? If so, click below and make your vote heard: mailto:%65%64%69%74%6F%72%40pcwize%2Ecom?Subject=%59%45%53%21 Cheers, Leif Gregory -- PCWize Editor / ICQ 216395 / PGP Key ID 0x7CD4926F Web Site http://www.PCWize.com TB FAQ http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html Using The Bat! 1.53 Beta/8 under Windows 98 4.10 Build A on a Pentium III 500 MHz notebook with 256MB. RP Third, you can be almost certain that a table created with TB will RP look awful to the recipient since 90% of all e-mail users have RP e-mail clients that use proportional fonts. That was my point and RP you have no answer to that. I use tables quite a bit in my PCWize E-zine, which is a plaintext newsletter sent out weekly. Mainly I use the tables to compare feature sets of software I've reviewed. I agree that most users of the other e-mail MUAs are using proportional fonts, so that's why I placed the below text in every newsletter for the last few years. If the columns in the below articles appear misaligned, it's because you are using a non-fixed width font. If you would like to see them as written, please change your e-mail font to Courier New. I once proposed an HTML format of my newsletter, and while there were quite a few that liked that idea, the majority were adamant in requesting that if I were to do so, that I continue publishing the plaintext version as well. These weren't die-hard batters either. RP The point is that if you turn off the auto-format feature you have RP to hit Alt-L all the time to reformat manually. I personally use the ALT-L convention exclusively, because it gives me the choice of what I want wrapped and what I don't. RP TB will never become a serious alternative to major e-mail clients RP if its developpers don't look at what people need in the *real RP world*, as opposed to a dedicated fan club, which is what this RP mailing list sometimes appears to be. TB's editor is the only one RP of its kind. Can it be that TB is right and all the others wrong? RP Highly unlikely. The majority of that has to do with perception. I was originally a little disappointed with the interface when I moved from Eudora (eons ago), but after tinkering with the capabilities, it was plain as day that TB blew Eudora out of the water. What's next? A skinnable TB? Media player already went that way, and I'd imagine Outlook / OE will eventually too. People seem to attach more value to eye-candy than whether something performs well and is robust. That's why Linux users are so die hard too. It works, and it works extremely well. The functionality was in place long before all the GUI eye-candy came along. I hope TB follows the same path. I'd rather have a robust MUA than a pretty one. TB isn't as of yet skinnable directly, but through third party applications such as WindowBlinds http://www.stardock.com you can selectively skin applications. WindowBlinds 3.0 integrates itself into the Windows XP display properties dialog windows, so it's pretty seamless. Re: How do I send from a selected isp?
Hello Charles, On Tue, 12 Mar 2002 at 19:52:05 [GMT +], you wrote: CC From what I've seen the developers of The Bat would be as well CC buying in a better mail list server - many are available. Just trying to determine which list you're speaking of. If it's this one (TBUDL), the developers have absolutely nothing to do with it. I created this list back in December of 1998 running entirely under The Bat. Once list traffic exceeded my meager 28.8K modem capabilities, it was moved to a list server, which later went down, and thanks to Marck and Syafril's quick action they picked up the list and it's being hosted by Syafril to this day. It is using the Listar software for the mailing list manager which is a true mailing list host. Over a period of time, we've discovered that most problems with the list are improperly sent posts by the users (things like not putting in a subject, sent to the server address instead of the post address), or that some other server in the chain to the subscriber is causing the problem. As for messages arriving out of order, there are two possibilities. One is the server issue I mentioned above where one of the servers in the chain between the list host and the subscriber is holding messages up, but the other is that oftentimes, the subscriber has their viewing options incorrectly set. Sorting by creation date vs. received date oftentimes fixes the apparent out of order messages. The cool thing about the TB lists (TBUDL, TBBETA, TBDEV, and TBTECH), is that oftentimes answers are provided just seconds after someone has posted a message. If for instance, some server on the way to you is holding up messages, the other list members might get it before you, reply, and because the reply goes a different path (hops), you might get the reply before you get the original question. There's really nothing any list software can do to overcome it. This is the way the Internet was designed (read up on Arpanet for more info). The bounces we moderators see on a daily basis is huge. We do our best to determine if the problem is with the list, but most times there isn't anything we can do about someone else's server.
