I notice you have JAVA-HOME, the windows 4.0.4 I just downloaded uses JAVA_HOME. Is your email a typo? If all else fails you might simply put the following into the catalina.bat or setclasspath.bat files. set JAVA_HOME=you java home directory If you do it in the catalina.bat be sure to do before the call to setclasspath.bat around line 54 I have not used the windows version but we do this for our HP-UX since we use have multiple vendor servlet engines that use different sdk's. I have racked my brain in trying to figure out how to do this, but I simply cannot do it myself, I am afraid to say! Thanx in advance to anyone who can help me! Speaking of list volume... Since 99% of the people here simply Reply to the e-mail, 99% of the responses to your pleas should have the SAME SUBJECT as you used originally (this e-mail is a perfect example). If your e-mail client can not filter, sort, or whatever by e-mail subject, then you simply need to get a better client. Clearly your current client is not adequate to the tasks for which you wish to use it (for example, managing a high volume mailing list). As far as your request, you give NO details as to what is wrong, or how you think your installation is not correct. No details whatsoever. You don't say what things you've tried, what documents you refered to for guidance in those attempts, and how they are not working. The basic, binary install works just peachy out of the box. Extract it to someplace appropriate, cd $WHERE_YOU_EXTRACTED_IT/bin, type 'startup.sh' or 'startup.bat', and boom, it works. Your JAVA_HOME environment variable must be set. It's that simple. Finally, the point of a mailing list is not simply a forum to scream and shout for help, its a community for sharing knowledge. Just like a USENET newsgroup, the value in the mailing list is seeing how the problems that people have are worked out ON the mailing list, thus when someone else has a problem, the archives will hopefully have the answers. There are few things more aggravating that seeing nothing but pleas but no answers in a mailing list. That makes it essentially worthless, both for the current readers and for future readers. So, never expect private mail, particularly early on, from a public forum. It's not fair to anyone. But, why am I saying all of this, when you won't read it anyway. Steve, People have tried to help you. Case in point, you emailed me directly asking me the following Now, would you please list, very methodically, all of the various steps involved in installing Tomcat?! Incidentally, I am trying/attempting to install version 4.0.4 without too damned many problems that I might encounter. I responded with the following First I'd have to know what OS you are installing on. I won't be able to give out any Unix specific install info since I work on Windows. I also need to know what difficulties you are having with your current install. I'd love to help you, but I'm not going to run through every last detail of an install because that is what the existing docs and the archives of this list are for. Once you give me some base info to work from, we can try to figure out the issue you are having. I am still awaiting a response letting me know what you are having trouble with, specifically. If you aren't going to bother writing back information that I need to help you out, I'm not going to go out of my way to help you. I offered my help and you ignored the offer. The only reason I can see for this behavior is that you want the solution spoon-fed to you so others do the work for you and you just benefit from the advice without having to do much of any work. Please don't flame back at me for this statement. If you believe the statement is a mis-characterisation of your intent, then prove me wrong by actually providing some evidence that you, in fact, *have* read the available documentation. RE: Help on Tomcat 4.0.4 configuration
Hi Nishant, Now, every thing is going well, only problem is session. Actually, i have a login page, after getting the userid and passwd it calls a servlet for validation. this servlet after validation, sends the response page to a new jsp page using sendRedirect(). here, in jsp page, i couldn't retreive the session variable, it gives null using session.getAttribute(). It seems tomcat 4.0.4 supports session. becoz, it is working on the same page, only thing is when we send to other page, it is not working. If any body have an idea regarding session attribute please let me know.. Thanks in advance. You can grab the binary for mod_jk for Apache 2.0.39 from here: http://www.acg-gmbh.de/mod_jk/ just grab mod_jk.dll, put it in your Apache2/modules directory, configure everything else like it says on the flashguides page, and you should be up and running. Re: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000
No need to use the debug version unless you plan on actually debugging it in Visual Studio or something. Here's my include statement: Include C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Jakarta/tomcat-4.1.3/conf/jk/mod_jk.conf You can autogenerate the mod_jk.conf file by doing the following in your server.xml: Put the following right after the Server... element and change the paths for your system: Listener className=org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.config.ApacheConfig modJk=c:/Progra~1/Apache~1/Apache2/modules/mod_jk.dll jkDebug=info workersConfig=c:/Progra~1/Apache~1/Jakarta/tomcat-4.1.3/conf/jk/workers.properties jkLog=c:/Progra~1/Apache~1/Jakarta/tomcat-4.1.3/logs/mod_jk.log / Put the following right after any and all Host... elements you have: Listener className=org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.config.ApacheConfig append=true forwardAll=false / This will output a mod_jk.conf in the CATALINA_HOME/conf/auto directory. After this is done, I suggest commenting out the stuff you added to server.xml and copying the conf/auto/mod_jk.conf to conf/jk/mod_jk.conf. This makes it so if you want to tweak your mod_jk.conf, you can do that without worrying about it being overwritten. Now you just have to worry about the workers.properties. I'm attaching mine for your convenience. I'll also attach a copy of the auto-generated mod_jk.conf. If you have everything under the localhost Host and notice that you can't hit hit your app at any address but http://localhost/mywebapp, remove the following from mod_jk.conf: VirtualHost localhost ServerName localhost Or, just make sure to set your app up under the proper host in server.xml. Either way will work. Also, in addition to the somewhat messy setup of the mod_jk.conf that you see autogenerated for most of your contexts, you can also configure it simply like this: JkMount /myapp ajp13 JkMount /myapp/* ajp13 That negates the need for all that extra Alias, Directory, and Location stuff since all it does is tell Apache to forward everthing to Tomcat. The disadvantage of this clean setup is that Apache will no longer serve up static files which would take some of the burden off Tomcat. Anyway, that's it. Attached are my example files. Joey, yes, if you want to connect apache and tomcat you'll want to leave them on their respective ports. What exactly was your include statement? What are you trying to include? Joey, Jakarta Ant is actually a java compiler of sorts, not a connector.. but from that website, it looks like you're trying to use mod_jk. I didn't see your Include line in your httpd.conf file. The syntax for it is something like this: Include C:/tomcat4/conf/auto/mod_jk.conf what are the contents of your C:\tomcat4\conf\auto\mod_jk.conf file? And do you have a mod_jk.dll file in your apache\modules directory? Is there anything in your error log, which is in your apache\logs\error.log file? Sometime in the future, you might want to think about upgrading Apache to the latest version http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/. There was a security hole mentioned for the 2.0.36 release which has been patched in 2.0.39. RE: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000
Hey Joey, Ant is a make tool. It would be best if we knew exactly what version. For instance, I am using Apache 2.0.39 and Tomcat 4.0.3, and Java SDK 1.3.1 I also followed this guide, but I did not build anything myself. http://www.galatea.com/flashguides/apache-tomcat-24-win32.xml for instance, I followed the link to the compiled dll, and I was able to get my version running by downloading this mod_jk.dll http://www.acg-gmbh.de/mod_jk/Release/mod_jk.dll This one was compiled using Apache 2.0.39 and Apache Tomcat 4.0.4; I was originally trying to use the connector from Tomcat 3.3, but it failed miserably. If you make any changes to your httpd.conf or mod_jk.conf, remember to RESTART APACHE. Also, check the event viewer if your service fails to start. That helped me troubleshoot a lot. the very last line of my httpd.conf file is (notice the forward slashes / as apposed to the usual \): # include mod_jk.conf Include C:/Program Files/Apache Tomcat 4.0/TomcatOnApache/mod_jk.conf # I have a folder in my Tomcat directory called TomcatOnApache where I store all my files My mod_jk.conf file looks like this: #begin mod_jk.conf IfModule !mod_jk.c LoadModule jk_module modules/mod_jk.dll /IfModule JkWorkersFile c:/program files/Apache Tomcat 4.0/TomcatOnApache/workers.properties JkLogFile c:/program files/Apache Tomcat 4.0/TomcatOnApache/logs/mod_jk.log JkLogLevel info JkMount /*.jsp ajp13 JkMount /tomcat-docs ajp13 JkMount /tomcat-docs/* ajp13 JkMount /struts-documentation ajp13 JkMount /struts-documentation/* ajp13 JkMount /bookstore ajp13 JkMount /bookstore/* ajp13 JkMount /webdav ajp13 JkMount /webdav/* ajp13 JkMount /examples ajp13 JkMount /examples/* ajp13 JkMount /struts-example ajp13 JkMount /struts-example/* ajp13 JkMount /manager ajp13 JkMount /manager/* ajp13 JkMount /jsp ajp13 JkMount /jsp/* ajp13 #end mod_jk.conf * And my workers.properties file looks like this: * #begin workers.properties # Tomcat Home Directory workers.tomcat_home=C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4.0 #Java Home Directory workers.java_home=C:\jdk1.3.1 #Environment slash; \ on NT and / on Unix/Linux ps=\ # ps=/ worker.list=ajp13 # , inprocess #-- DEFAULT ajp13 WORKER DEFINITION -- worker.ajp13.port=8009 worker.ajp13.host=localhost worker.ajp13.type=ajp13 worker.ajp13.lbfactor=1 #-- DEFAULT LOAD BALANCER WORKER DEFINITION -- worker.loadbalancer.type=lb worker.loadbalancer.balanced_workers=ajp13 #-- DEFAULT JNI WORKER DEFINITION- worker.inprocess.type=jni #-- CLASSPATH DEFINITION - worker.inprocess.class_path=$(workers.tomcat_home)$(ps)lib$(ps)tomcat.ja r # worker.inprocess.cmd_line=start #Java 2 jvm worker.inprocess.jvm_lib=$(workers.java_home)$(ps)jre$(ps)bin$(ps)classi c$(ps)jvm.dll # Setting the place for the stdout and stderr of tomcat worker.inprocess.stdout=$(workers.tomcat_home)$(ps)logs$(ps)inprocess.st dout worker.inprocess.stderr=$(workers.tomcat_home)$(ps)logs$(ps)inprocess.st derr #end workers.properties -Original Message- From: Joey Kovacs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, June 29, 2002 4:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000 Thank you Liam My connector I believe in ANT I am using Tomcat 4 Apache 2 Java SDK 1.3 - this is supposed to be my JKD?? Hello, I am trying to get the servlet to obtain a list of filenames and directories in my servlet class to be sent back to the applet. However, I am not sure if my approach is correct. I used the following code in my servlet class in the directory: C:\(where i installed my tomcat)\Apache Tomcat 4.0\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes\MyServlet.class Codes in the class: File directory = new File(classes); File [] filenames = directory.listFile(); The result i get is null. No directory name classes. However, when I tried using . (I presume it means current directory), it seems to be in windows/system32 ?? I am quite confused about this. How do I actually refer to the directory I mentioned above? Do I need to configure anything? I really need help! Your advise will be much appreciated. Thanks Best Regards, Simon

Howdy ;) By definition (see servlet spec), you can't read anything under WEB-INF. If you could, the right approach would be like String path = getServletContext().getRealPath(/WEB-INF/classes) File directory = new File(path); ... RE: Help with Tomcat and IIS
The isapi_redirect[or].dll is both a filter and an extension. The filter portion examines the request to see if it should be forwarded to Tomcat. If so, the request URI is saved in new header entries which are added to the request and the request URI is replaced with the extension-uri value. This causes the request to be processed by the extension portion of the dll which handles the communications with Tomcat. Your symptom is typical of having the isapi filter called twice per request where even /jakarta/isapi_redirector.dll is configured to be forwarded to Tomcat. The second call to the filter routine replaces the correctly request URI, saved previously, with /jakarta/isapi_redirector.dll and the request is now doomed to failure. Since it appears you didn't make the mistake of adding the Filter DLLs key, check to make sure the filter appears only once in either the desired virtual host(s) or in their parent node. It should not appear at both levels. Cheers, Larry -Original Message- From: Robert A. Tomcat developers pl help : Embedded Tomcat and classloaders
I want to use embedded tomcat in my application and I want to include only bootstrap.jar in my classpath. I am wondering how to achieve this. I wrote a class called EmbeddedTest that does what is given org.apache.catalina.startup.Embedded. I added catalina.jar in my classpath to compile the file. I removed catalina.jar from my classpath after that. I wrote another class to set up classloaders and call EmbeddedTest I set up the classloaders thus: commonloader = ClassLoaderFactory.createClassLoader(commonclassesdirs, commonlibdirs, null); catalinaloader = ClassLoaderFactory.createClassLoader(catalinaclassesdirs, catalinalibdirs, commonloader); Class embeddedcls = catalinaloader.loadClass(EmbeddedTest); Method method = embeddedcls.getMethod(main, new Class[]{args.getClass()}); method.invoke(embeddedcls, new Object[]{args}); When I run this I see the error: Exception in thread main java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/catalina/L ifecycleException at java.lang.Class.getMethod0(Native Method) at java.lang.Class.getMethod(Class.java:888) at LaunchTomcat.main(LaunchTomcat.java:43) The error goes away if I make my EmbeddedTest as part of package org.apache.catalina.startup - which I dont to do. And even if I made as part of the package org.apache.catalina.startup package it doesnt work if I set up the EmbeddedTomcat to use any of my custom logger or realm implementations - essentially if I refer to any class file outside of the catalinaloader. Am I missing something here - how do I run the embedded tomcat with out having to include tomcats server files in my classpath? Help with Tomcat and mm.mql driver
Hello all, Hopefully this is an easy one... I am trying to connect to mysql from a servlet running on Tomcat 4.0.3. I have the mm.mysql driver installed and it works fine from within a Java console app. When I run the servlet I get the following error: java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver I am running this servlet from Tomcat\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes\code_lib (code_lib being the name of the package I am creating...) I read in a few places that I should put the mm.mysql class in WEB-INF\lib, does this still apply if my app is not running in the classes directory? Or should it go in WEB-INF\code_lib\lib? Do I have to alter server.xml or modify the CLASSPATH? Hopefully this is enought information. Help is MUCH appreciated. Put the MM.MySQL .jar file in $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib. 2. If MM.MySQL is installed in c:mm_mysql, then _that_ path needs to be in your CLASSPATH, the fully qualified path to the Driver.class file is c:/mm_mysql/org/gjt/mm/mysql/Driver.class, so the argument to Class.forName() in your servlet is org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver HTH -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Help with Tomcat and mm.mql driver
Hey guys, Thanks for your help, I managed to get it working! I had previously dropped the jar file in tomcat\lib but was still getting class not found errors. Just for kicks I rebooted and it started working (I had previously just tried restarting Tomcat). Go figure... RE: Please Help (Apache Tomcat services and Runtime.getRuntime().exec ) ??
Hi, Do you have a relative path in the exec call? AFAIK, windows services start running in the c:\WINNT\system32 folder (unless the tomcat service changes it when running, does anybody know if that's the case?), so your exec call will fail unless it uses an absolute path. RE: Still Need Help RE: Tomcat 4_0_2 JSP Does Not Work in Default
Thanks to all. I would not say that this is the right solution, but it is a solution. Add a symbolic link in the /var/tomcat4/lib directory to the tools.jar file in the java directory. In my case, this was: ln -s /usr/local/java/lib/tools.jar tools.jar I stopped and restarted Tomcat. The problem does seem to be resolved. This is rather odd, however, and I am concerned about future upgrades. The classpath is obliterated (I edited my dtomcat4 script to display the environment variables). I do not, however, see where this occurs. I agree. I posted the solution on my web site: http://www.shannonbrown.net/resources/linux-resources.htm in case other people need this resolution. I combed through the scripts but do not yet see where the problem occurs with the CLASSPATH. RE: Still Need Help RE: Tomcat 4_0_2 JSP Does Not Work in Default
Nice page :) I read : Tomcat 4.0.2 -- RPM Version javax.servlet.ServletException: sun/tools/javac/Main JSP examples will not execute in the default installation. To fix the problem, you need to manually create a symbolic link between the JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar and the CATALINA_HOME/lib. In my case, I created the following: ln -s /usr/local/java/lib/tools.jar tools.jar in the /var/tomcat4/lib directory. After creating the symbolic link, you must stop and start the Tomcat service. Execute tomcat4 stop and then tomcat4 start from the command line. = Fixed in RPM 4.0.2 release 3 (my fault ;() just uploaded :) BTW, same problem for jasper4 which miss to set initial classpath $JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar to Tomcat 4.0.2 -- RPM Version su: warning: cannot change directory to /var/tomcat: No such file or directory This problem is caused by a bug in the Tomcat4 install RPM file. The RPM file creates a new user called tomcat4 but sets the working directory incorrectly. = Fixed in RPM 4.0.2 release 2 ;) --- Tomcat 4.0.2 -- RPM Version ConnectionException The java.net.ConnectionException error can be difficult to troubleshoot. After hours of troubleshooting, I carefully reviewed the catalina.out log file in $CATALINA_HOME/logs. As a result, I commented out the Tomact-Apache Service definition in server.xml. This definition is near the end of the file and begins with a Service name=Tomcat-Apache tag and ends with the /Service tag. Do not comment out the final /Server tag or the XML file cannot be read. Save the server.xml file. Run tomcat4 stop. Run tomcat4 start. = The webapp connector could be removed if you don't have an Apache with mod_webapp module to speak with. BTW, what's the problem with ConnectionException. For Apache or IIS or iPlanet users, you could use ajp13 : !-- Define an AJP 1.3 Connector on port 8109 -- Connector className=org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.Ajp13Connector port=8109 minProcessors=5 maxProcessors=75 acceptCount=10 debug=0/ The default port for Ajp13 in RPM is 8109, to avoid conflict with a running Tomcat 3.2 or 3.3 which listen on 8009 Regards I agree. I posted the solution on my web site: http://www.shannonbrown.net/resources/linux-resources.htm in case other people need this resolution. I combed through the scripts but do not yet see where the problem occurs with the CLASSPATH. I need help with Tomcat and socket permission error.
Hey all, I'm a Tomcat noob so please forgive any doofus terminology. First off: Tomcat 4.0 on Win2K Pro with Java 1.3.1, browser is Netscape 6.2. I'm using Tomcat to build HTML pages from a Java app (duh). For demo purposes, I want to have the main web page to be able to start the app as HTML or an applet (see my HTML file at bottom). I know the applet is running (when the page is loaded) because it's painting a button. Pushing the button causes my app to run but I get the following error: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission DGPORT resolve) OK, so I look through the doc and find something in the catalina.policy file. I tried adding permissions to catalina.policy (and starting Tomcat with the -security option) but nothing changes. I even tried give ALL permissions to ALL apps by adding: grant { blah blah blah permission java.security.AllPermission; } I tried setting CATALINA_OPTS=-Djava.security.debug=all to see if that would give me any clues but I don't see any messages in the output that contain the word FAIL. If I load the page straight from disk (bypassing Tomcat) the applet runs fine, so I'm pretty sure it's Tomcat that's getting in the way. Any clues would be mucho appreciated. Thanks. I tried all these options. But, unfortunately, it didn't resolve the issue. I think Tomcat does find the DLL, since if I remove DLL from \winnt\system32 folder I get a different error meesage. My guess is to run JNI under Tomcat, certain security seetings need to be configured. Does anyone know of this ? Re: Help giving Tomcat more memory
Michael, I then start the program with java -Xms145M -Xmx160M test If I understand this correctly, the initial heap size should be 145 megs. However, looking at my processes, there is only about 7200K allocated for the program. Why doesn't it start out at 145? That is the same behaviour I'm seeing on the Win2K machine with Tomcat. It ignores the initial heap size I'm specifying and starts around 16MB, and then dies around 78. Am I misunderstanding how the -Xms and -Xmx flags work? No, but when looking at the task manager you should not look at Mem Usage but at VM Size. (You can select the columns at View | Select Columns...) NT/W2K/XP allocate Memory usually as virtual memory (using LocalAlloc() or GlobalAlloc() API functions in C/C++). The OS decides when it will swap unused data and program code to the page file and give more fast memory to a process. So if you specify -Xmsn and -Xmxn the OS will not immediately take away all memory when the process starts. You just made sort of a reservation. If you look at VMSize you will see, that you got your 145 MB. Assuming you are getting the 7200k from Windoze task manager, the main problem is that this tool is inaccurate at best. About the most you can use it for is relative memory useage - increase your -Xms param and see if it at least changes your memory (not conclusive, but could at least tell you that you are changing something!) drfish -- To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Troubles with the list: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

One JSP not compiling - HELP - ANY TOMCAT DEVELOPERS?
Hi - Posted this yesterday but no one seemed to have any ideas. So posting again in the hopes that Tomcat developers will take a look. Have multiple JSP files under webapps/app/jsp/ and all seem to compile whenever they are changed except for one - index.jsp which is called from my main index.html. The additional weird thing is that I have two (apparently identical) Sun boxes running side by side using the same base of code. One compiles index.jsp and runs it fine - the other doesn't recognize it as a jsp and doesn't even attempt to compile it. I've checked permissions on the work directory and they appear fine. server.xml is identical between the 2 machines except for hostname change, reloadable is set to true. I am at my wits end here - what could be the difference?? Beth Anne Lambrechts Telenor Satellite Services, Inc. delete the index.jsp from the work folder... or delete all the contents of webapps/app and try again. I've had got a similar problem (two days nightmare) with XML files and XSL stylesheet, the problem was some malicious 'TAB', 'NEWLINE', 'SPACE' characters after the last ending tag. I know it's a different case.. but I haven't other ideas. RE: One JSP not compiling - HELP - ANY TOMCAT DEVELOPERS?
It was the fact that apache only had one virtual host and it was the secure virtual host. I needed to add a virtual host for the unsecure host - since I was not planning on going to the secure site until after the first couple of pages - I found this by sticking https in front of the call to the jsp and then it worked fine. Should have figured it out since I had already figured it out (via a different method) on the other machine - my httpd.conf files did not exactly match!! So much for my identical configurations! Come on and help me - Tomcat 4 ssl - Can't connect with https ot http now!
Hi again , Well my problem stems from migrating from Tomcat 3.2.3 to Tomcat 4 . Thus i wanted to set up a secure tomcat 4 server utilising SSL , I have installed the JSSE support and placed the the 3 jars into jdk installation/jre/lib/ext dir . The CA'S and CERT'S have been self-created( Using Keytool) and my keys and certs placed in tomcat 4 home/keys Folder to help tomcat locate my .Keystore that is named keys. Thus my Keystore is called bbnpakeys in the tomcat home/keys/bbnpakeys Thus i hoped that the keystore called keys would locate the server cert as i have configured the SSL Connector via tomcat 4 home /conf/server.xml. I have uncommented the connector/ in question. !-- Define an SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector on port 8443 (Uncommented this entry)-- Connector className=org.apache.catalina.connector.http.HttpConnector port=8443 minProcessors=5 maxProcessors=75 enableLookups=true acceptCount=10 debug=0 scheme=https secure=true Factory className=org.apache.catalina.net.SSLServerSocketFactory clientAuth=false keystoreFile=keys/bbnpacert keystorePass=test123 protocol=TLS/ /Connector Thus via IE.5 signed my own cert as CA. Used keytool utility to export my created cert and imported to IE.5 using base64 encoded format into a file called bbnpa.cert into Trusted Root Certification. Thus on re-start on startup script and typing https://localhost:8443/ . I get a Dialog box with the Yellow Box Icon it try's to connect to site 127.0.01 but then a IE.5 page cant be dispayed. I can't use Mozilla as i haven't dnd the cert or imported yet but when i try any other ip address i get connection refused while attempting a connection. Please help as it's delaying other work. NB Tomcat 4 is running from the startup script. Thank you, Rama. Tomcat works fine now that I upgraded to 1.3 (after I had some issues with my CLASSPATH settled). RE: PLEASE HELP: Apache+Tomcat - Virtual hosts + separate VMs
There is a little documentation about this, which is found at the following online locations. Context configuration: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-3.3-doc/tomcat-ug.html#context_addcust Apache mod_jk.conf generation: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-3.3-doc/serverxml.html#ApacheConfig The result is that a virtual host configuration like: ?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1? Server Host name=virtual.host.name address=xx.xx.xx.xxx Alias name=virtual.host.alias / Context path=/myapp docBase=webapps/myapp / /Host /Server results in the following in the conf/auto/mod_jk.conf generated by the ApacheConfig module: NameVirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xxx VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xxx ServerName virtual.host.name ServerAlias virtual.host.alias JkMount /myapp ajp13 JkMount /myapp/* ajp13 /VirtualHost When a request comes into Apache for this virtual host, mod_jk will include the ServerName, virtual.host.name, in the forwarded request. On the Tomcat 3.3 side, this server name is used in the mapping so that the request will only map against contexts defined for that virtual host. What I don't know is how the ServerName value would be used by Tomcat 4.x. It might have the same effect for virtual hosts configured in Tomcat 4.x, but I haven't investigated this yet. Future connector work is happening in the jakarta-tomcat-connectors project. Bill Barker has added org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.config.ApacheConfig and others to jakarta-tomcat-connectors/jk/java, so there will likely be something available in Tomcat 4.0.2 and Tomcat 4.1 when they are released. Larry, The desired target is Tomcat 4.X. The revision of Apache is of less issue, so for the moment I can install whichever one is best able to provide a working solution. Right now, we're running Apache 1.3 and JServ with one JVM per virtual host. Each JVM runs under an appropriate UID for that virtual host. Our specific interest is to upgrade the web application environment while preserving the isolation between virtual hosts. --- Noel -Original Message- From: Larry Isaacs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] It wouldn't hurt to mention which version of Apache and which version of Tomcat. RE: PLEASE HELP: Apache+Tomcat - Virtual hosts + separate VMs
The normal server.xml contains a directive called host, just copy, paste and change the name parameter to the host name you want, eliminate all the context but the empty one (ROOT) and that's it, rename, let the standard for the standard examples and duplicate it for every host, after activate the warp connector, go to the Proxy how-to, be patient, is very difficult to migrate from 3.x to 4.x, but it is not imposible, is not even a big deal, the key is to read the hold manual, expending two days (6hrs X 2) and that's it. Re: PLEASE HELP: Apache+Tomcat - Virtual hosts + separate VMs
Noel: Let me give this one a shot. I just did this for Tomcat 3.24 over the weekend. To each have a separate JVM, you basically need multiple Tomcat sessions. Which means, you need multiple server.xml, each with it's own context definition serving a particular JVM. So, here is what you need to do: Configure Apache to support each virtual host. In my case, I used the NameVirtualHost settings, and for each virtual host, I had a different document root. Create a mod_jk.conf that supports directing traffic to different VHOSTS based on some sort of path. This is the important parts: Alias /host1 /opt/host1 Directory /opt/host1 Options FollowSymLinks /Directory JkMount /host1/servlet/* ajp13 JkMount /host1/*.jsp ajp13 Alias /host2 /opt/host2 Directory /opt/host2 Options FollowSymLinks /Directory JkMount /host2/servlet/* ajp13_2 JkMount /host2/*.jsp ajp13_2 Notice that the ajp workers are labeled differently. Now, modify workers.properties to support the new workers... There are 2 new workers, one to support the admin functionality of each tomcat server, and one to support the connection to Apache worker.list=ajp12, ajp12_2, ajp13, ajp13_2 worker.ajp12.port=8007 worker.ajp12.host=localhost worker.ajp12.type=ajp12 worker.ajp12.lbfactor=1 worker.ajp12_2.port=8010 worker.ajp12_2.host=localhost worker.ajp12_2.type=ajp12 worker.ajp12_2.lbfactor=1 worker.ajp13.port=8009 worker.ajp13.host=localhost worker.ajp13.type=ajp13 worker.ajp13.lbfactor=1 worker.ajp13_2.port=8011 worker.ajp13_2.host=localhost worker.ajp13_2.type=ajp13 worker.ajp13_2.lbfactor=1 Now, make copies of server.xml, one that is server1.xml, and one is server2.xml. Server 1 would have context stuff looking like this: Connector className=org.apache.tomcat.service.PoolTcpConnector Parameter name=handler value=org.apache.tomcat.service.connector.Ajp12ConnectionHandler/ Parameter name=port value=8007/ /Connector Connector className=org.apache.tomcat.service.PoolTcpConnector Parameter name=handler value=org.apache.tomcat.service.connector.Ajp13ConnectionHandler/ Parameter name=port value=8009/ /Connector Context path=/vhost1 docBase=/opt/vhost1 crossContext=false debug=0 reloadable=true /Context And server2.xml would have the ports modified appropriately, and with the right context definition. Now, start tomcat by doing this: startup.sh -f $TOMCAT_HOME/conf/server1.xml You need to specify the -f parameter for shutdown as well. If all this is done right, you now have 2 tomcat's running, each with it's own JVM, each with it's own context and vhost support. Good luck! jchuang - Original Message - From: Noel J. even better here is my httpd.conf. you did the other two lines right? the LoadModule and the AddModule... -Original Message- From: Ravi Reddy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 8:21 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: HELP ON TOMCAT WITH APACHE Thanks for the Info badams But when I tried this, and restart the apache after restarting tomcat, I am getting an error at the starting of apache at line WebAppConnection conn warp localhost:8008 which says missspelled WebAppConnection or perhaps not included in the module.but I have already put my .dll and .so files in apache installdir/modules/ and my end of httpd.config file is as follows #VirtualHost * #ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] #DocumentRoot /www/docs/dummy-host.example.com #ServerName dummy-host.example.com #ErrorLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-error_log #CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common #/VirtualHost WebAppConnection conn warp localhost:8008 WebAppDeploy examples conn /examples Could u pls clarify. All you really need to do is add to that apache httpd.conf (find the LoadModule part of the file, close to the top of the file and add this) LoadModule webapp_module modules/mod_webapp.so AddModule mod_webapp.c (at the bottom of the file add this and you will be able to connect to the tomcat examples) WebAppConnection conn warp localhost:8008 WebAppDeploy examples conn /examples now restart tomcat then Apache. http:/localhost/examples/jsp/ try a few examples (i like numguess) that is it for the basics... good luck -Original Message- From: Ravi Reddy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 7:09 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: HELP ON TOMCAT WITH APACHE Hi All, I am a new member of this group.Currently, I am working on Tomcat 4.0 and apache 1.3.22 on Win NT. I am not able to configure tomcat as a servlet container. I have downloaded the web_app module and configured exactly. but , it's of no use. Can any one guide me in configuring it ?. if some one can send their httpd.conf of apache and server.xml of tomcat is Greatly appreciated!. Please help save Tomcat for a high profile project in Switzerland: Problem compiling mod_webapp for IBM HTTP Server 1.9.19 running on AIX 4.3.3.
My insufficient knowledge of AIX platforms prevents me from successfully compiling mod_webapp (as well mod_jk) on AIX 4.3.3 platform. Hardware: IBM pSeries 660 model 6H1 OS: AIX 4.3.3 (not sure about exact maintenance level) Web server: IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19 Servlet Engine: Tomcat 4.0.1 Tools libraries: IBM's port of common GNU other open-source packages available at http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html Tomcat itself appears to be running flawlessly. Unfortunately due to my poor knowledge of AIX I have been so far unable to recompile neither mod_webapp nor mod_jk for the specified platform. Actually compilation worked fine in both cases. What did fail was the 'ld' linker. As far as I can judge about possible cause of failure, the linker requires a module export (.exp) file in order to be able successfully complete linking process. In this respect AIX appears to differ from Unixes, as I had no problems at all building mod_webapp mod_jk under Linux (Mandrake 8.0 Mandrake 8.1) as well as Solaris 8. The problem is aggravated by the management's desire to use IBM HTTP Server instead of plain Apache mainly due to IBM's SSL support, which is perceived to be more secure. Is my assumption right? If yes, is there a way I could generate that damn .exp file for mod_webapp or somehow do without it? Has anyone ever succeeded in compiling mod_webapp for IBM HTTP Server on AIX 4.3.3? I have been informed by the management that if problem is not resolved by mid next week Tomcat will be replaced with WebSphere 3.5 Standard Edition. :((( Please help save Tomcat for the project. Our work is highly visible. The system will serve population of an entire Swiss canton. If successful the system may be adopted by other cantons with Tomcat prominently featured alongside some leading commercial products. Many thanks in advance Oleg Kalnichevski -- To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Troubles with the list: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Help wanted: Tomcat 3.2.2 is crashing on a Unix machine without writing anything in the log files
Hello Everybody, Tomcat 3.2.2 is crashing on a Unix machine without writing anything in the log files. Please help me. Is this a problem with the version itself or my installation. Thanks, Chandra -Original Message- From: Brett M. Bergquist [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, September 24, 2001 8:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Limits of Web Exactly. In my case, instead of performing SQL on a database, I perform SNMP on a network device. The same logic applies, however. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 24, 2001 3:49 PM Subject: Re: Limits of Web Brett, Again thanks for the reply. One more question regarding XML. When you send the XML request info, do you send the data as well? For example if the applet requests data from the server I, would then process it, preform the necessary SQLs on the database and then send the data back to the applet as an XML document and have the applet parse it and desplay it? Brett M. Bergquist To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] brettb@mail.cc: com Subject: Re: Limits of Web 09/24/01 01:46 PM Please respond to tomcat-user Okay for the internet. That's what we support as well as intranet. I wanted to make sure that my application was easy to deploy in an internet environment so I did not what to start using RMI or IIOP or something else that would not flow over a firewall, so I chose to use XML over HTTP. Basically, our applets create an XML document that describes the request data needed and then use an HTTP POST to pass this data to the backend servlet. The servlet processes the HTTP POST data, transforms it back into a XML DOM document. It then analyzes and processes the request. It then creates a XML document as the response and passes this back to the applet using the HTTP response. We use an early version of Sun's XML parser and I also modified the sample XML-RPC client and servlet classes for my own use to support this. It works pretty good and performance of creating and parsing the XML is a non-issue; the major processing time is taken by actually performing the requested service. If I had to do it over, I would definitely look at using the quasi standard XML-RPC protocol or maybe even SOAP, but I have a feeling that these are getting to esoteric for my taste. One other benefit of this approach was that the front end is loosely coupled from the backend. I could change the front end side, maybe having a native application or something similar, and the backend would be blissfully unaware. The XML is the binding protocol between the two. Our applications currently have about 5 to 7 tab pages with about 10 to 15 items per page. From the time the applet starts on the browser to the time that it displays the data is about 1 to 2 seconds. This is using just Tomcat as our web server and java servlet engine. We started to front the backend with Apache, but the connection between Apache and Tomcat was flaky and we seem to get good enough response time with just Tomcat. It also simplifies the configuration quite a bit. We do one other thing that's a little interesting. We needed to send asynchronous updates to an alarm application. As you know, a web based application is primarily request/response driven. Again, I did not want a big configuration issue in dealing with opening ports on the firewall, etc. so what I did was fake out the system by issuing a HTTP request and I have the response never end. That is, the servlet side generates alarm information whenever it needs and sends it down the response pipe back to the client. Now this tacks up a TCP connection from the server to the client so it puts a little stress on the server resources, but with the number of clients we were looking to support this was acceptable. As for the jar package, we use a tool called cannery. You give it a starting Java class file and it will find an package any other classes that the starting class file depends on into a jar file. This optimizes the jar file for the applet to be as small as it can be. It's pretty good but it may miss classes that are needed through runtime reflection, in which case, you simply have to tell cannery to include those class files manually. Just another thought. I worked on a previous system that tried to do some other client side processing such as having a client side hidden component that would open up a port and listen for updates, etc. This involved getting into code signing using a certificate such as from Verisign. Each browser does this differently with different code signing requirements. This was a nightmare and I don't think you want to go there.
