[SlimDevices: Touch] Scan experiences with the internal squeezbox server of the Touch (USB-HD)
Hello, I would like to open this thread to collect experiences of scaning times of your music from an external USB HD using the internal squeezebox server of the Touch (Touch as a stand alone player using an external USB HD). I've already posted my experiences in another thread, but I would like to open this one, so we can get an overview of how the touch behaves depending of the mount of data to be scaned or the type of USB HD (2,5 or 3,5 external HD's). Maybe we can get something usefull from this for the developers of the server software... USB-HD: Toshiba 2,5, 500 GB, AC powered Files: ~5 Scan time: ~9-12 hours Scan results: sucessfull, but when trying to play something, the server stops, restarts and begings to scan the USB for new files Scan for new files time: ~9 hours If you have any solution to reduce the scan times, we will be very glad to hear about it! (please don't write to have less files) You can use this template for your results: USB-HD: Files: Scan time: Scan results: Scan for new files time: Thanks and regards! Phil Leigh;536874 Wrote: It is frustrating but you need to understand that there are (at least) 2 seperate problems, both of which only impact certain people based on THEIR specific combination of platform and music files. As such these bugs can be very hard to prevent (and quite hard to fix). They certainly weren't hit during beta AFAIK. However, Andy has fixed the faad memory exception bug that was occasionally causing faad to crash on alac playback. The Can't open file... problem is different... I've been trying to help with this but I can never recreate this error on XP SP3 with 7.6. I've used example files sent by people with the problem and they all work fine on my system. At one point it looked like the alac files were possibly being misinterpreted as AAC (or MPEG-4 as SBS refers to them) and hence faad was not being invoked - the native AAC decoder was being invoked instead. This won't work, hence the advice to check your file types to ensure that MPEG-4 is set to stream as FLAC via faad (same as Apple Lossless. If you turn on player.source logging you can see exactly what SBS is trying to do when you play a track... This is NOT the default. However, this is only a workaraound (if I'm correct about the alac files being wrongly identified as AAC). There may also be a problem with the tags generated via iTunes, but I can't comment on that...I think some other folks have been looking at that. My ALAC files arent being seen as ALAC, just MPEG-4 So it never even hits the ALAC filetype. And it was trying to convert to AAC, which I guess cant be done. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
Hey, you're not alone.I've got a big library of 250 Gbytes, and had numerous issues getting my new Squeezebox touch to work properly. My main problem was that when scanning for files, after about 4 hours of scanning the HDD, some time after starting to scan album art, the squeezebox stops with an error music server stopped due to a problem. I tried 4 different models of USB HDD (including a powered one) and I bought a USB powered hub in case the unpowered USB HDDs couldn't supply sufficient current without luck. Some issues I had along the way included: 1) USB connection dropped repeatedly. 2) When I navigate to a file and try to play it I get an error Problem can not open file for: 3) GUI freezes or is unuseably slow 4) Server needs restarting 5) Impossible to browse by tags because every time you enter a menu such as Artists It takes forever to populate the entries. That would be OK if it remembered them, but as soon as you exit that menu and re-enter it does the same thing again. 6) Squeezebox hangs saying it is scanning but it's not, the HDD isn't even spinning. Eventually after several scans, wipe and rescans and factory resets, I got it to scan everything although albumart is missing (which was working at one point), I can't log into the squeezebox server (which was working) and the device is permanently scanning for new files (which I guess is making the GUI so slow).Wouldn't it make more sense to be able to manually control the file scanning and choose the directories. I have other stuff on my HDD I don't want scanned. I also tried to point the picture viewer at a picasa album embedded URL and that failed too. So, I'm very unimpressed so far but I haven't given up yet. -- RichardLittlewood RichardLittlewood's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37668 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24bits/96hz is stuttering like crazy
OK, let me see if I have this straight, with an external server playing 24/96 files works fine, is this using wired or wireless? Does it play fine any compression level (-0 -5 -8 etc)? The problem occurs when playing the 24/96 file off a USB drive connected directly to the Touch, correct? If this is the case its fairly understandable. The builtin server takes up a lot of memory leaving almost no free memory. My guess is that the higher level decoding takes a larger chunk of code or larger buffers which pushes things over the edge. The stuttering sounds like there isn't enough memory to hold everything in memory all at once so the memory manager swapping stuff in and out of memory as it switches between the server and the player. In order to get things to work better you need to cut down on the memory used, any little bit helps. One thing that takes memory is the sharing of the USB drive over the network. If you have turned this on, turn it off and see if that improves things. Also things like don't run the image viewer at the same time, don't use the spectrum analyzer or VU meters. If the tracks have artwork you might want to try using the now playing screen that doesn't show artwork. If none of that helps then it looks like your options are to run with -0 if you want to run with the builtin server, OR run off an external server. IF you are running off an external server (and you don't have a USB drive plugged in) and you STILL have problems with 24/96 FLAC then we have some more detective work to do. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)
Sorry I've been off this for a few days, trying to work on other things. Anyway it looks like we seemed to have settled down to a few people have problems with 24/96 at higher compression when using wiFi to an external server. In some cases wired fixes these. First off, does anybody have any problems with an form of 24/96 when WIRED to an external server? From what I'm reading it looks like its a wiFi issue. When using WiFi wav seems to work and flac -0 seems to work. Higher compression wav seems to work when transcoded to PCM. Does anybody have a situation where flac -0 or wav does NOT work? If the above is true, then it looks like we just have to worry about streaming over WiFi with flac greater than -0. Does this seem to be the situation? Given that wavs seem to work it does not sound like its a transmission bandwidth issue. This seems to point to it being something inside the touch, some sort of interaction between WiFi and higher level flac decompression. IF the builtin server is not running the amount of free memory should be plenty to handle the needs of this operation so I don't think that is the first place to look. To me it seems like there are two reasons stuttering might be happening, either data throughput is not fast enough for some reason, or the code working with that data is not running (swapped out of memory or process not running). Lets try and come up with some possible scenarios and see if we can come up with some tests to try and pinpoint whats happening. (the problem here is that I don't have the problem so I can't go off and run these tests myself, its going to have to be those that DO have the problem who run the tests) Some of the previous tests have noticed that the CPU will max out occasionaly, but only for short periods of time. One of the tests seemed to show that low average with occasional max bursts works fine, but much higher average without the max bursts does cause problems. This sort of makes sense since there are fairly large buffers in the player code, so short interruptions in the data flow should not be a problem. One option to try here is increase the buffer size in squeezeplay and see if that improves things. Another place I would like ot look at is the WiFi itself. There are various levels of encription in use in WiFi, no encryption, WEP and several levels of WPA. I would like to see if varying the encryption type makes any difference. So could any of you that have the problem try different encryptions levels on your WiFi and report back. Another thing to look at is process run statistics, see if either the WiFi or jive process is not getting run for significant periods of time. Another thing to check is if there is any significant swapping going on. Given the fairly large amount of free memory there SHOULDN'T be any swapping happening, but its a good idea to check. I'll leave it at that for now. While it is a huge benefit of the Squeezebox system that you can simply use your computer as a media server and don't need an extra box, that doesn't seem to work for everybody. It's hard to believe, but there are actually people who check their e-mails only once a week, and only turn their computer on to write a letter or to play a game, and switch it off immediately afterwards. See how many users are running SBS on a NAS, VortexBox, or SheevaPlug. So if I may make a guess, the next member of the Squeezebox family has to be a dedicated server with built-in storage. And since they are certainly not developing the embedded SBS as a personal favour for users of 3rd party hardware, that's an easy guess indeed. I assume it's saying that if you have a Squeezebox Touch and a Squeezebox Radio, that the maximum number of tracks you can listen to on the Radio (via the Touch) is 100. However, does that also mean that if I only have a Squeezebox Touch, and I listen to songs stored on SD card, that my maximum SD card playlist will be 100? Does the Yamaha have an analog pass-trough of some kind. Most receivers digitize analog inputs anyway, and all does if you involve some processing at all even the subwoofer output. So it's often a moot point use digital in for that kind of machine. They are obviusly made for digital sources, their analog support is for legacy sources, like vhs and tape deck's. And no Touch will not sample rate convert. Is this a pre-sales question? The Touch does not download files. You can play them from a local drive or SD card or you can use the Touch with a remotely installed SBS to play your files over the network. DAC sound is too subjective. Any drive (flash, HDD, whatever) plugged into the USB OR any SD card plugged in the builtin server starts up and IT takes a large amount of memory. That could very easily cause problems even with a wired connection. With something plugged into the USB the builtin server is running even if you are connected to an external server. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Static IP
Right now there are two ways to set the IP address, either ssh and modify the files, OR try and connect to a machine without a DHCP server and it will then ask if you want to setup a static IP. The easiest way to do this is run a cable from the Touch to a laptop ethernet port (NOT the switch or router on your LAN), assuming the laptop is NOT running a DHCP server. Go to settingsadvancednetworking and choose the network type as ethernet, this will try and connect to a DHCP server over the wire. It won't find one, then give you the option to use a static IP, say yes and enter the address. Unplug the wire from the laptop and go back to your normal connection (wired or wireless). Yeah its a little messy but you don't have to edit the files on the Touch. If your A/V receiver supports HDMI 1.1 (or above) digital audio, you may also use the HDMI port, which has the required copyright protection mechanism (HDCP). http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd_support.asp#B12 In addition to losing money from lost sales of SACD players, Sony also loses money if fewer SACDs are manufactured at its facilities (the only place where SACDs can be pressed). http://www.sa-cd.net/shownews.php?news=6 -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74688 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The issue of what is allowable cannot be determined by reference to the number of studios which may or may not be engaged in similar behavior. Just because many cars in the city are going 80 mph and not getting a speeding ticket doesn't mean these cars are not violating the vehicle code. Further, apparently Puget Sound Studios IS the ONLY studio in the civilized world that engages in the conduct at issue here. If anyone knows of another studio that is engaged in the same activity, please let us know. Definitions: Studio - a for profit commerical enterprise that openly acknowledges this type of work. Civilized world - Any country with a democratic government and an independent judiciary that is a signatory to a treaty with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and where Sony is doing business. (That leaves out countries like China and Russia, who may give lip service to intellectual property rights but don't consistently enforce them.) In other words the DSD data stream is passed into a computer where the sample rate conversion (SRC) is done inside a computer program (SARACON). This is exactly what is not allowed by Sony's license if the digital data stream derived from an SACD is unencrypted DSD or PCM of better fidelity than 24 bit/44.1 kHz. Here is the FAQ from Oppo, a leading audiophile component manufacturer: Q: Why is there no audio output from the coaxial or optical digital audio port when I play DVD-Audio or SACD discs? A: The copyright protection feature of the DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD) disc format prohibits unprotected digital audio output. Since the coaxial or optical digital audio output has no copy-protection ability (i.e. pure audio stream without encryption and authentication), audio from DVD-Audio or SACD cannot be output via these interfaces.
