So, just to be sure: if I connect the Touch in coax to a Cambridge audio
DACMagic that is conneceted in RCA to my amp, I should hear an

Correct. However you probably need to listen to it carefully to hear
the difference as it is a close call. You'll also need very good
original sound recordings.

I've received my Touch last Friday and really like it. The sound out of
the analogue output is much better than my SB3 or Receiver. But there
is one thing that should be really improved: the Touch stand. It really
should be adjustable. When I am sting in my couch, I can barely see the
display (the Touch stands on a furniture 20° below my view at 3
meters).

[SlimDevices: Touch] what are recan stages?

2010-04-19 Thread DigitalMitch

Could someone please let me know, or point me to the messages (in the
Squeezebox Server screen) for a successful (re)scan, and how it looks
at completion.

I'm suspicious that something is stopping my tinySC completing its scan
but not sure ...

my screen initially does scanning media (finds around 60,000 - though
they are only 25,000 tracks)
then gets as far as

Discovering Files: Complete
Scan New Files: Complete
Scan Artwork: Complete

it seems to find 2038 new files each time, but the USB drive hasn't
been touched - this makes me think the previous scan never completed
properly.

[SlimDevices: Touch] USB Drive coming up empty

2010-04-19 Thread metalbob

I've successfully moved my entire 600GB and counting library off of my
drive, reformatted it and connected it directly to the Touch and I'm
getting nothing. SBS is running, it appears to be doing a light scan
of some sort and then nothing. Nothing pops up in My Music. I ejected
the drive and reconnected several times and Wiped and Scanned several
times too.

I am currently using an iTunes file structure that works perfectly fine
within iTunes. Am I doing something wrong here?

It might be the way you typed that, but it reads like you have an
freshly formatted drive attached to your touch with no files on it.

That amount of music might take a little while (like all day) to scan.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Scan experiences with the internal squeezbox server of the Touch (USB-HD)

2010-04-19 Thread perro6969

Hello,

I would like to open this thread to collect experiences of scaning
times of your music from an external USB HD using the internal
squeezebox server of the Touch (Touch as a stand alone player using an
external USB HD).
I've already posted my experiences in another thread, but I would like
to open this one, so we can get an overview of how the touch behaves
depending of the mount of data to be scaned or the type of USB HD (2,5
or 3,5 external HD's).
Maybe we can get something usefull from this for the developers of the
server software...

USB-HD: Toshiba 2,5, 500 GB, AC powered
Files: ~5
Scan time: ~9-12 hours
Scan results: sucessfull, but when trying to play something, the server
stops, restarts and begings to scan the USB for new files
Scan for new files time: ~9 hours

If you have any solution to reduce the scan times, we will be very glad
to hear about it! (please don't write to have less files)

You can use this template for your results:

USB-HD:
Files:
Scan time:
Scan results:
Scan for new files time:

Thanks and regards!

Nacho

PS: To the moderators, if you think this is a bad idea, just ignore
this thread, but if you think this can be usefull, please create a
Sticky, to have it always on the first page.

They certainly weren't hit during beta AFAIK.

However, Andy has fixed the faad memory exception bug that was
occasionally causing faad to crash on alac playback. The Can't open
 file... problem is different...

I've been trying to help with this but I can never recreate this error
on XP SP3 with 7.6. I've used example files sent by people with the
problem and they all work fine on my system.

At one point it looked like the alac files were possibly being
misinterpreted as AAC (or MPEG-4 as SBS refers to them) and hence faad
was not being invoked - the native AAC decoder was being invoked
 instead.

This won't work, hence the advice to check your file types to ensure
that MPEG-4 is set to stream as FLAC via faad (same as Apple
 Lossless.

If you turn on player.source logging you can see exactly what SBS is
trying to do when you play a track...

 This is NOT the default.

However, this is only a workaraound (if I'm correct about the alac
files being wrongly identified as AAC).

There may also be a problem with the tags generated via iTunes, but I
can't comment on that...I think some other folks have been looking at
 that.
My ALAC files arent being seen as ALAC, just MPEG-4 So it never even
hits the ALAC filetype. And it was trying to convert to AAC, which I
guess cant be done.

curious why others would want to.

Works well if one upgrades ones HT Receiver and wants to put the old
one in a nearby room. My across the street neighbor did just this.
Moved the old Receiver down stairs and dropped a Toslink cable down
through the wall. And he put a pair of powered speakers in the dining
room ceiling off of the RCA outs while he was fishing cables in the
wall. Coax to new HT Receiver of course. Three zones for the price of
one Squeezebox. Of course the Zones all have to play the same song
since it is really one big zone, but it does what he wants it to.

The Master Bedroom is offset right above the Kitchen so he is putting a
Touch in the wall of the Master Bedroom, dropping the RCAs down the wall
to the MS whole house Intercom System AUX In (3m RCA pair reaches with
room to spare) and bringing the Coax Out to a small Receiver with
built-in DAC in the bedroom.

I hope Logitech releases the wall mount soon and its the same size as
the beta ones as he used my Touch Wall Mount to make his cutout
already. His Touch should be here this week, just waiting to hear about
the wall mount.

He has an iPhone with iPeng to control it all with.

yeah...I would say they should add an option to disable the scan at

old Receiver down stairs and dropped a Toslink cable down through the
wall. And he put a pair of powered speakers in the dining room ceiling
off of the RCA outs while he was fishing cables in the wall. Coax to
new HT Receiver of course. Three zones for the price of one Squeezebox.
Of course the Zones all have to play the same song since it is really
one big zone, but it does what he wants it to.

This gives me some ideas.

satisfactory, stuttered for a couple of seconds at the beginning of

My actual library is split across two 2TB drives, each with at least

The Touch should be putting out digital silence (24 zeroes) between
tracks with gaps. Some dacs treat this as no signal - although they
shouldn't.

Now that this comes up, I actually tested it with a flash drive when I

Is it possible that the file structure is not reading correctly? It's

What comments on the audio would you expect from Engadget? Sounds
better than the Duet? Yeah, right. Very very few purchasers of this
device would ever be able to tell a difference in audio quality between
the Touch and a previous Squeezebox.

He briefly alludes to the embedded server when describing the USB and

are having with the embedded server, maybe it's better left

My first impressions (of the analog outputs) were very good, too, at
first: I was wondering whether I would have to keep my dacs.

Had a more careful listen today. As a result, although the SBT internal
dac is certainly very good (for the money, and even regardless of
price), it remains different enough from my own dacs. So, I'll be
keeping my dacs (Northstar and Caiman) for various reasons, mainly for
the extra smoothness of the Italian beauty and the mid-bass
immediateness of the latter.
SBT is somewhere between the two, but I don't see the interest of it at
the moment. Perhaps a long-run listen will show otherwise. Perhaps not,
but in any case, it didn't cost me extra money, did it ? ;)

The digital output of the SBT (compared to the SB3) is a keeper, that's
for sure. :)

Squeezebox products is that they do not see them as a System. Funny

Sure it's a system, it's just a system that consist of individual parts
that also can work as standalone products. What's the price of a Sonos
graphical remote control and a Sonos playback device/server ?

However, I can agree that the current price of the Controller doesn't
really make sense when you compare it with an iPod Touch that's cheaper
and IMHO better than the Controller. At about half the price, around
$149, the Controller would feel a lot more interesting.

It is a system, yes it can work separate. However the fact that it
works as a system is a big asset that is not shown well. This system
idea works great because the investment I made in my SB1 has grown over
time with newer products. I still use my SB1, mind you its usefulness

So I'd throw a couple of MP3's into that same iTunes folder, rescan,

Probably unlikely that this is your actual issue, but if it were me I'd

Hey, you're not alone.I've got a big library of 250 Gbytes, and had
numerous issues getting my new Squeezebox touch to work properly.

My main problem was that when scanning for files, after about 4 hours
of scanning the HDD, some time after starting to scan album art, the
squeezebox stops with an error music server stopped due to a problem.
I tried 4 different models of USB HDD (including a powered one) and I
bought a USB powered hub in case the unpowered USB HDDs couldn't supply
sufficient current without luck.

Some issues I had along the way included:
1) USB connection dropped repeatedly.
2) When I navigate to a file and try to play it I get an error Problem
can not open file for:
3) GUI freezes or is unuseably slow
4) Server needs restarting
5) Impossible to browse by tags because every time you enter a menu
such as Artists It takes forever to populate the entries. That would
be OK if it remembered them, but as soon as you exit that menu and
re-enter it does the same thing again.
6) Squeezebox hangs saying it is scanning but it's not, the HDD isn't
even spinning.

Eventually after several scans, wipe and rescans and factory resets, I
got it to scan everything although albumart is missing (which was
working at one point), I can't log into the squeezebox server (which
was working) and the device is permanently scanning for new files
(which I guess is making the GUI so slow).Wouldn't it make more sense
to be able to manually control the file scanning and choose the
directories. I have other stuff on my HDD I don't want scanned.

I also tried to point the picture viewer at a picasa album embedded URL
and that failed too.

So, I'm very unimpressed so far but I haven't given up yet.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24bits/96hz is stuttering like crazy

2010-04-19 Thread JohnSwenson

OK, let me see if I have this straight, with an external server playing
24/96 files works fine, is this using wired or wireless? Does it play
fine any compression level (-0 -5 -8 etc)?

The problem occurs when playing the 24/96 file off a USB drive
connected directly to the Touch, correct?

If this is the case its fairly understandable. The builtin server takes
up a lot of memory leaving almost no free memory. My guess is that the
higher level decoding takes a larger chunk of code or larger buffers
which pushes things over the edge.

The stuttering sounds like there isn't enough memory to hold everything
in memory all at once so the memory manager swapping stuff in and out of
memory as it switches between the server and the player.

In order to get things to work better you need to cut down on the
memory used, any little bit helps. One thing that takes memory is the
sharing of the USB drive over the network. If you have turned this on,
turn it off and see if that improves things. Also things like don't run
the image viewer at the same time, don't use the spectrum analyzer or VU
meters. If the tracks have artwork you might want to try using the now
playing screen that doesn't show artwork.

If none of that helps then it looks like your options are to run with
-0 if you want to run with the builtin server, OR run off an external
server.

IF you are running off an external server (and you don't have a USB
drive plugged in) and you STILL have problems with 24/96 FLAC then we
have some more detective work to do.

John, Do you have a Touch?

There are several threads on the same topic really discussing a lot of
these point. I think you have restated many of the issues well.

In a nutshell using an external server works best. Obviously, this is
not how the Touch was designed to be positioned, but for 24/96 that
seems to work best.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-04-19 Thread JohnSwenson

Sorry I've been off this for a few days, trying to work on other things.
Anyway it looks like we seemed to have settled down to a few people have
problems with 24/96 at higher compression when using wiFi to an external
server. In some cases wired fixes these.

First off, does anybody have any problems with an form of 24/96 when
WIRED to an external server?

From what I'm reading it looks like its a wiFi issue. When using WiFi
wav seems to work and flac -0 seems to work. Higher compression wav
seems to work when transcoded to PCM. Does anybody have a situation
where flac -0 or wav does NOT work?

If the above is true, then it looks like we just have to worry about
streaming over WiFi with flac greater than -0. Does this seem to be the
situation?

Given that wavs seem to work it does not sound like its a transmission
bandwidth issue. This seems to point to it being something inside the
touch, some sort of interaction between WiFi and higher level flac
decompression.

IF the builtin server is not running the amount of free memory should
be plenty to handle the needs of this operation so I don't think that
is the first place to look.

To me it seems like there are two reasons stuttering might be
happening, either data throughput is not fast enough for some reason,
or the code working with that data is not running (swapped out of
memory or process not running). Lets try and come up with some possible
scenarios and see if we can come up with some tests to try and pinpoint
whats happening.

(the problem here is that I don't have the problem so I can't go off
and run these tests myself, its going to have to be those that DO have
the problem who run the tests)

Some of the previous tests have noticed that the CPU will max out
occasionaly, but only for short periods of time. One of the tests
seemed to show that low average with occasional max bursts works fine,
but much higher average without the max bursts does cause problems.
This sort of makes sense since there are fairly large buffers in the
player code, so short interruptions in the data flow should not be a
problem. One option to try here is increase the buffer size in
squeezeplay and see if that improves things.

Another place I would like ot look at is the WiFi itself. There are
various levels of encription in use in WiFi, no encryption, WEP and
several levels of WPA. I would like to see if varying the encryption
type makes any difference. So could any of you that have the problem
try different encryptions levels on your WiFi and report back.

Another thing to look at is process run statistics, see if either the
WiFi or jive process is not getting run for significant periods of
time. Another thing to check is if there is any significant swapping
going on. Given the fairly large amount of free memory there SHOULDN'T
be any swapping happening, but its a good idea to check.

I'll leave it at that for now.

John S.

I think the problem is that all Squeezeboxes are peripherals, but there
is no central product to tie it all together. While it is a huge benefit
of the Squeezebox system that you can simply use your computer as a
media server and don't need an extra box, that doesn't seem to work for
everybody. It's hard to believe, but there are actually people who check
their e-mails only once a week, and only turn their computer on to write
a letter or to play a game, and switch it off immediately afterwards.
See how many users are running SBS on a NAS, VortexBox, or SheevaPlug.
So if I may make a guess, the next member of the Squeezebox family has
to be a dedicated server with built-in storage. And since they are
certainly not developing the embedded SBS as a personal favour for
users of 3rd party hardware, that's an easy guess indeed. IMHO.

OK, I see 'here'
that when using the Touch as a home music server, The maximum playlist
length is capped at 100 tracks. I don't quite understand exactly what
this means.

I assume it's saying that if you have a Squeezebox Touch and a
Squeezebox Radio, that the maximum number of tracks you can listen to
on the Radio (via the Touch) is 100.

However, does that also mean that if I only have a Squeezebox Touch,
and I listen to songs stored on SD card, that my maximum SD card
playlist will be 100?

Could someone with a Squeezebox Touch please confirm whether you can
have playlists longer than 100 songs when playing songs stored on USB
drive or SD card?

Yes also. People who have never had a Squeezebox before don't know how

the question is whether the built-in server is what the Touch uses when

Does the Yamaha have an analog pass-trough of some kind.
Most receivers digitize analog inputs anyway, and all does if you
involve some processing at all even the subwoofer output.

So it's often a moot point use digital in for that kind of machine.
They are obviusly made for digital sources, their analog support is for
legacy sources, like vhs and tape deck's.

And no Touch will not sample rate convert. If you have
squeezeboxserver running on your Mac and Tries an 24/192 file then sbs
will downsample to 24/96 So it can be played by Touch.

Is this a pre-sales question?

The Touch does not download files. You can play them from a local drive

play your files over the network.

DAC sound is too subjective. Since you can hook up with analog and

hardly believe that they could not afford 4k which would accomodate

As posted earlier, I encountered stuttering when playing a 24/96 file
when the Touch was wired to an external server. Re-flaccing to -0 cured
this.

There was a thumb drive with jpeg files plugged into the USB port;
don't know if that has any bearing on the matter...

HUGE bearing. Any drive (flash, HDD, whatever) plugged into the USB OR
any SD card plugged in the builtin server starts up and IT takes a
large amount of memory. That could very easily cause problems even with
a wired connection.

With something plugged into the USB the builtin server is running even
if you are connected to an external server. You CAN go to
settingsadvancedSqueezebox server and stop the server manually.
Unless you do that it will stay running as long as the drive is plugged
in.

Could you try the wired connection without anything plugged into the
USB or SD connectors?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Static IP

2010-04-19 Thread JohnSwenson

Right now there are two ways to set the IP address, either ssh and
modify the files, OR try and connect to a machine without a DHCP server
and it will then ask if you want to setup a static IP.

The easiest way to do this is run a cable from the Touch to a laptop
ethernet port (NOT the switch or router on your LAN), assuming the
laptop is NOT running a DHCP server. Go to settingsadvancednetworking
and choose the network type as ethernet, this will try and connect to a
DHCP server over the wire. It won't find one, then give you the option
to use a static IP, say yes and enter the address. Unplug the wire from
the laptop and go back to your normal connection (wired or wireless).

Yeah its a little messy but you don't have to edit the files on the
Touch.

John-
Do you know if this works with Radio too?
Maybe I'll try it tonight (I've been meaning to setup the Radio with
Static IP, but haven't spent any time making sure I understood which
file(s) to modify and what the correct syntax would be!)

Sorry, no clue if this works on the Radio or not. It might, you can
certainly try.

I recall the inbuilt server did try to install itself when I plugged
the USB drive in, but it gave the option to stop the installation,
which I took. It did seem to have stopped but maybe something was going
on in the background and using memory.

Could you try the wired connection without anything plugged into the USB

Well, I -could- but I'd need to generate some files that aren't at -0,
as I spent a while converting them all. :) I'll have a go when I get
the time - maybe tomorrow.

Yep, reflac-ing to 0 cured the issue - can provide the original and
re-flaced files for debugging purposes ~80MB each - was using coaxial
out, digital vol 100%, Cat6 gigabit Ethernet everywhere. This is going
to be a pain!

Well the touch is not portable like the controller, the face is fixed
to the base and outlets.

Why why why after all the complaints with the Duet and static IPs would
Logitech even think of not providing a simple menu item for this on the
Touch? What is the big deal about including this simple feature that has
always existed on the SB3 and earlier models? What possible reason could
there be?

I believe this is the correct bug, which currently has 37 VOTES! (Sadly,
it's been around since March of 2008, and it's listed as NEW and
UNASSIGNED, with Target Milestone of Future!)
I suggest we continue to vote for it, and continue to raise the issue
on this forum - maybe it will get some attention now the Touch is
released.

Here is the FAQ from Oppo, a leading audiophile component
manufacturer:

Q: Why is there no audio output from the coaxial or optical digital
audio port when I play DVD-Audio or SACD discs?

A: The copyright protection feature of the DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD
(SACD) disc format prohibits unprotected digital audio output. Since the
coaxial or optical digital audio output has no copy-protection ability
(i.e. pure audio stream without encryption and authentication), audio
from DVD-Audio or SACD cannot be output via these interfaces. To enjoy
high resolution digital audio from DVD-Audio or SACD discs, please use
the 5.1-channel analogue audio output. If your A/V receiver supports
HDMI 1.1 (or above) digital audio, you may also use the HDMI port,
which has the required copyright protection mechanism (HDCP).

In addition to losing money from lost sales of SACD players, Sony also
loses money if fewer SACDs are manufactured at its facilities (the only
place where SACDs can be pressed).
