[SlimDevices: Touch] TOSLINK broken

2019-10-19 Thread mlsstl

My SB Touch has been plugging along for many years now, feeding its
SP/DIF output to my Bel Canto C5i.

I was recently rearranging things and decided to try a TOSLINK cable
instead, but only got dead silence. I tried two different cables and
both optical inputs on the amp. The optical cables and amp inputs work
fine with a different source, so it seems to be tied back to the Touch.
However, I do get a red light at the end of the cable when it is plugged
into the Touch's optical out, so it looks like I have a carrier with no
signal.

Everything else on the Touch seems to work fine. Has anyone else had
only the TOSLINK output fail on their Touch? Any suggestions? Is it
worth pulling the unit apart to check things out?

He prefers the enhanced frequency response one can get with an

I can't disagree with you from my perspective, but it is not uncommon
for those on the outside of a hobby to use terminology differently than
those who have been immersed in a subject for any length of time.

I'd suggest that most people on the outside would be perfectly
comfortable with the term sound quality to describe what he meant.
EQ/tone controls can make the bass more prominent, the highs a bit more
sparkly, voices clearer and so on. Many lay people would describe that
as better quality even if it was a gross deviation from what an audio
purist would want.

This reminds me of, in the mid-1970s, when I sold stereo equipment and
virtually all amps still had tone controls. It was a given that roughly
95% of the people would crank up the bass treble controls to 1 or 2
o'clock (or more). They just liked the way it sounded and weren't
concerned if that departed from some reference standard.

Back to the original poster, I suspect that if the Touch had an
easy-to-use equalizer, he'd think it the greatest thing since sliced
bread. ;-)

Well what are you gonna do when your computer craps out and you have to

A couple of thoughts.

1. I've had a personal computer since about 1981 or 82, and while I know
things do happen, offhand I can't think of any circumstance I've had
where an operating system upgrade didn't have backwards compatibility
with my existing software. It wasn't too long ago that I had to
reinstall a 1993 copy of Lotus Approach to recapture an old data file.

2. And, like ralphpnj, I run a dedicated server for my music and have a
copy of the Linux-based software. It can be easily and quickly
reinstalled on any replacement machine. Since my PC is dedicated only to
music service, there is no need constantly update it. It isn't exposed
to the internet, needs no virus or hacking protection, and if it works
properly as a music server today, it'll keep doing that for a long time.

3. Ultimately, the only really important issue to me is that I hang onto
my music files. There are lots of ways to play them, but right now, I
like the Squeezebox method the best. I've got no reason to abandon a
player and format that serves me well. 10 years from now, who knows? But
any other option I jump into right now carries the same risk (and maybe
more.)

Now, just because the Touch works well for some of us doesn't mean that
it is a universal approach. No matter what the product, some people will
always prefer something different. I got used to that a long time ago.

Dumb question, but you indicated the Touch has a static address, but I'm
not sure what you mean by in the router. Static addresses are set in
the device in question. What happens when you set the static address in
the Touch itself? Does it not stick?

Also keep in mind that electronics, when they fail, often do so very
quickly after first installation. They have just enough oomph to make it
past the factory quality control check, but then fail very quickly after
the customer begins using their device. This isn't real common, but does
happen.

Don't forget to call Logitech support. They often have good info if you
can get to the right person.

I haven't seen this mentioned in the other messages, but how did you
make the comparison that led to the conclusion the Touch is bright

could and level matched them so the volume was the same, then switched
the amp's input control between the two. I could not reliably hear any
difference in sound quality.

Expectations and subconscious influences have a big impact on what we
hear, so do some carefully setup comparisons and give yourself a bit of
time to adjust to the new device in your system.

This aspect of the Touch falls into the no good deed goes unpunished
category.

All prior Slim Device players prior to this required a local server in
order to play local music. That's where the name Slim Device came from
- it referred to a minimalist network player design that counted on
access to a server that could do the heavy lifting.

In the Touch, they had a shade more processing power and decided it'd be
nice to let the player directly access flash drives and memory cards.
That meant that instantly people were trying to use large external USB
hard drives to play big collections. This often didn't work well. In
fact, the original release of the Touch was delayed almost 6 months
while they tried to tweak code to improve this function. (The
advertising material originally referred to the ability to directly play
USB drives and that got dropped.)

In short, they tried to give a bit of extra functionality and ended up
getting whacked for the effort.

Ultimately, this is still a very good and very handy slim network
player and an outstanding buy at $300. The current model Touch will
never be a good stand-alone server.

badhack wrote:
Thanks for the info. I don't know what to say, they are doing the right

It's the same thing pointed out before. The whole series of Squeezebox
network players were originally designed to have a server running in the
background. The Touch's designers made the mistake of trying to give an
extra bit of functionality within the parameters of the original server
software, and now you're frustrated they didn't redo it from the ground
up, your way.

Those decisions were made several years ago and I seriously doubt
Logitech is going to do anything at this point beyond maintenance. It
remains to be seen if new models will come out (Logitech is notoriously
closed-mouth about products in development.)

So, at this point, you've got a couple of choices. You can use the Touch
with a server and enjoy good performance. You can use the internal
server and get frustrated, or you can start hacking the Linux OS and do
things your way. You can also dump the Touch and find another product
that better suits your needs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Noise on RCA outputs at max. volume.

Do you get the hiss if you disconnect the RCA interconnects from the
Touch to the preamp? Do you get the hiss if you connect another line
source (tuner, CD player, etc.) to the preamp? If you get the same hiss
from other sources or with no input then the noise is probably
originating in the preamp.

Looking briefly online, ESP indicates this preamp has jumpers or dip
switches that can adjust the preset gain level. Sounds like this would
be a good place to start.

It also might be worth trying some shorter cables if the other approach

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] HDD Assistance

2012-05-07 Thread mlsstl

I strongly recommend the Vortexbox approach. Just replaced my old music
server about 2 weeks ago with one.

They come as a preconfigured hardware device starting for under US$500
(exact cost depends hard drive size) or you can download the software
for free. I did the latter and bought an inexpensive Foxconn server on
Amazon. I do ripping on my other computer so didn't bother with the
optical drive in the VB server. I also used an existing HD I owned so my
total investment in the new server was $150.

The Foxconn has an Atom based processor so has plenty of horsepower for
music server duty, running Logitech Media Server (the current version of
the old Squeezeboxserver program.) However, the Atom processor has very
low power consumption and easily runs 24/7.

This approach eliminates the stability problems people have using the
Touch directly with a USB drive and the Vortexbox approach gives much
better performance than the usually underpowered NAS boxes.

I'd also recommend you try the Touch's built-in analog outputs for a
while before buying an external DAC.

First, that will let you get used to the Squeezebox experience without
investing a bunch more money. Make sure you're comfortable with the
process of ripping your CDs to a high quality format (e.g., FLAC, etc.)
and become familiar with the user interface and regular operation.

Then, after a month or two, if you still feel the need to try an
external DAC, you'll be able to concentrate on that change and you'll
have a solid reference point to determine if it's worth it.

2011-11-21 Thread mlsstl

I've been a Squeezebox user for almost 10 years, dating back to the
original SliMP3. I currently have a Touch, a SB3, a Radio and a
Controller.

While I really like them and think they are a great music source, if
Logitech discontinued them tomorrow, I'd certainly give them a moment
of silence out of respect, but then life would go on.

First, most of the units in the field are going to keep working for a
long time. Used ones will continue to be in circulation if you feel
strongly about adding another unit or replacing one. (Look at all the
old tube amps and even Victrolas still in circulation after 50 to 100
years!)

Second, nothing Logitech does or doesn't do will affect my music
collection. There are many other players available that will stream
music from my hard drive. (It's far more important that I maintain
backups than keep an extra Squeezebox around.)

So, yes, they have a fine product and I'd like to see them keep making
it, but it's not the end of the world if they do the corporate thing
and move in a different direction.

My experience with wireless indicates that moving a device just inches

That said, no manufacturer has 100% quality control perfection, so it
is possible there is some unintentional difference between the two

I'd think any intentional change somewhat less likely. Wireless devices
require certification by the FCC and even minor changes mean a trip back

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I'm a cynic, so why does it work???

2011-10-04 Thread mlsstl

Why does it work? has answers at two extremes. At one end, the
equipment change resulted in some technical improvement - perhaps lower
interference or noise - that you're now hearing.

At the other end, it could be all in your head.

In the middle, it could be a combination of those factors.

People often forget the brain is actually pretty easy to fool. Take all
those optical illusions involving colors, shapes, figures, etc. No one
blames that perception on the optical equivalent of a bad USB cable (I
would have never been fooled if they'd printed this on better
paper) They just see what they see.

People often forget that subjective influences often take place at a
subconscious level and don't always follow the easy explanations of
confirmation bias or peer influence. I recall one study a year or two
ago where they found the color of a contestant's jersey reliably
influenced a judge's call in a sports contest. Red is the one you want.
Various explanations were offered, but they were just theories.

If you truly need to prove you're hearing a difference, you'll need
to construct some type of blind test that removes the potential for
subjective influence.

Otherwise, if you're happy and the expenditure is within your budget,
then just enjoy the sound. At that level, the exact cause doesn't
really matter.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] On a positive note (Touch's analog out)

2011-10-02 Thread mlsstl

My former source was a SB3 with a Lavry DA-10. When I got the Touch a
year and a half ago, I synced and level matched the analog outs of the
Touch against the SB3/Lavry combo.

After two weeks of comparison, I found I couldn't reliably tell the
difference between the two set-ups, so I sold the Lavry. (I kept the
SB3 for a second system.)

When it comes to the sound of my system, I'm the biggest variable. I
can talk myself into justifying pretty much anything if I wish. Second
place in the variability contest goes to recordings - they are all over
the place in terms of mike choice placement, mixing, processing and
effects. (I always marvel at those who appear to pick a component
because one particular pop/rock recording sounds good.)

Anyway, while I sometimes find myself in a poor mood for listening, or
been disappointed with this or that recording, I've yet to said to
myself that I wish the analog outs of the Touch were doing something
different.

I know others have a different opinion. That could be my pedestrian
system or tin ear, or it could be their active imagination (or both!)
but that's fine. Fortunately, survival of the world doesn't depend on
our reaching agreement on this particular subject. ;-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Switching from SB3 to Touch

2011-09-16 Thread mlsstl

I don't run OSX, but on my Linux box, to upgrade the server software, I
always stop the current program (/sbin/services squeezeboxserver stop
at the command prompt). Then I uninstall the old version, then install
the new one. It starts automatically on installation. Then I set up the
correct Mysqueezebox.com login info and point the server to the local
music and playlist directories. The server rescans the music directory
and that's about it. I've had very few problems with upgrades and
anything that's popped up has been minor.

Since you're coming from an older version of SBS (7.3), you will want
to be careful in making sure the new SBS user has access to the music
directory and files. If I recall correctly, OSX can also be picky about
file permissions.

Re: Cant access music library

Yes, some people have been successful in getting Touch's internal server
to work directly with an external USB drive. Others have given up.

You may need to get a different brand/model of drive - it appears some
work better than others. You probably also need to be very consistent
about the type of music file format, tagging, and artwork. You want to
leave a lot of free space on the drive (20% or more.)

I'd suggest you spend some time in the forums researching the many
messages on the subject and see if you can spot what successful users
have done versus your current setup.

Good luck!

Since you had a SB3, that also means you were using a computer running
the Squeezeboxserver program.

Why don't you use the Touch with the external computer?

It is no secret that using the Touch's built-in tiny-SBS program with
an external USB drive is wildly problematic. Logitech hasn't advertised
the Touch's USB port as anything more than a convenience for flash
drives for about year.

The Touch's performance is very solid when using an external computer.

This is just off the top of my head - don't know if there are issues

wireless hot spot (local coffee shop, etc.) and use their wireless to

Then, once that's done, bring it home and you should be fine without

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Empty Music Directories

2011-05-23 Thread mlsstl

The first thing to check is the ownership permissions of a file that
your Touch has been able to index. Then check the ownership
permissions of the recently added files skipped by the scan.

Using the ls -al command above, you'll get an output that looks
something like this:

[directory]$ ls -al
drwxr-x--- owner group filesize date time ..
rwxr-x--- owner group filesize date time filename.type

The first line after the command is the directory info, hence the d.
The second and following lines relate to individual files.

The first rwx indicates the owner can read, write execute this
file. The middle r-x shows that any member of the group can read
execute, but not write over the file. The last --- says that all
other users have no access to the file. Note that any of the three
groups (owner, group, all others) can have any combo of r, w or x.

Where owner group shows will be replaced by the owner's user ID and
his group status. The filesize, date, time filename info is
self-evident.

If there is a difference between the owner/group info of the file Touch
can scan and the one it cant, that is likely your problem.

You can use the chown command to change the ownership group info on a
file and the chmod command to change the permissions if needed. From the
command prompt, type man chown or man chmod for use options.

You can also change permissions from the GUI Nautilus file browser
under the properties/permissions tab.

However, I'd recommend that you first just check if there is a
difference between the files Touch can scan and the ones it can't.

Just out of curiosity, have you checked your router settings? Routers
typically contain their own firewall so it might be worth checking
those settings.

And, I assume DHCP is assigning IP addresses in the same range to
everyone? My system has a mix of static and dynamic addresses. When I
switched routers recently I had to manually change the statics from
192.168.2.X to 192.168.1.X.

And I believe the port that Squeezeboxserver needs to have open is
3483, both TCP and UDP.

I'm not a Mac person, so those are pretty generic thoughts.

Quite possibly. A router or switch will automatically adjust for the

In the old days a crossover cable was needed if one directly
connected two computers without going through a switch or hub. It is
quite possible that even some more recent network cards do not have
this automatic adjustment.

My wife - a Jimmy Spheeris fan - saw his stuff disappear for a period

I've never heard of hiss as an artifact of a digital deficiency. That is
almost inevitably a byproduct of tape noise from the open reel used for
the original recording or something else going on with your analog gain
stages in your amplification stream.

A recording from the 1960s would almost certainly have been recorded on
a studio open reel and this would have been pre-Dolby. The master
recording is simply going to contain a certain amount of hiss. Unless
you are using digital processing to remove this hiss, it simply won't
go away because you've changed certain aspects of your digital
configuration.

I believe the Touch has a 30 day money back guarantee. Why not try it in

I had a Lavry DAC I used with a SB3 that I sold after I got a Touch.
Other people have reached different conclusions. Trying it yourself is

The only problem with that theory is you'll basically never be able to
compare two pieces of equipment. The advocates of whichever piece of
gear loses the competition will be able to state that theirs had the
wrong number of hours on it. If it has 50, it should have been 100. If
100, it should have been 200. The debate is endless. It's stuff like
this that led me to happily surrender my audiophile card.

In my case, the Lavry had a couple of years on it. The Touch I kept was
just out of the box and only had 25 or 30 hours on it at the conclusion
of my comparison. (Of course that brings up another aspect of burn-in I
find interesting - things only ever get better - never worse.)

I think the main point to the original poster is that he should try the
analog outs of the Touch before rushing to spend money on an external
DAC. His choice should not be the subject of a vote by others.

I've posted this comment several times, but will repeat it again. I used
a Lavry DA-10 with a SB3 when the Touch arrived. I did a synced and
volume matched comparison between the analog out of the Touch and my
SB3/Lavry combo for two weeks. I routinely found myself unable to tell
the difference between the two without checking the position of the
amp's input selector. I ended up selling the Lavry DAC 8 months ago and
haven't thought of upgrading since.

I'd encourage you to listen to the Touch by itself for a while. Why
worry about upgrades before you even listened?

Of course, others can blame my failure to appreciate the Lavry with the

The net result is I no longer needed the more expensive DAC to get the

I've never had that problem. You might give a few more details about
your system, particularly regarding the PC you're using as server. What
OS are you using? What's the CPU speed and how much RAM? Are you using

Squeezeserver?

You could also call Logitech and have them walk through the situation

Excellent review! I enjoyed reading it, and as an owner of a variety of
Squeezeboxes, you got it spot on.

My only observation is that I think many in the audiophile world still
get too caught up in the external DAC game. I had a SB3 with a Lavry
and the external DAC did make enough of a difference for me to justify
the expense. When I got the Touch last April, I spent about 2 weeks
doing a synced, level-matched comparison between the SB3/Lavry and the
Touch. I was rarely able to spot the difference and generally had to
take a look at the amp input selector switch to tell which was playing.

However, that's probably just me. I turned in my audiophile club card
some time ago out of annoyance. I wonder if some of these people even
bother listening to the music these days

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any gotchas going from Duet/SBR to Touch?

2010-10-03 Thread mlsstl

I added a Touch to my system about six months ago. I already had a SB3,
a Radio and a Duet setup. The Touch set up easily and connected to my
Squeezebox Server without problem. It simply appeared as a fourth unit.
The Duet Controller also controlled the Touch as easily as it works with
all the other players.

I ended up selling my Receiver (kept the Controller) and didn't have to
do anything special to take it out of the system. The buyer had to do a
reset to factory settings so he could connect it to his wireless
network, but that is a simple process.

As a network media player, the Touch is wonderful. The only deficiency
has been for those who wish to do away with an external server and use
the built-in tiny SBS. That works fine for some but has been
problematic for others. However, things should be fine for anyone that
uses an external server.

YMMV - on my setup it made a difference.

As far as sound quality, I think I hear a minor improvement with
wired, but I may be imagining it

The skipping and buffering problems are exactly what one would expect
with a poor wireless connection.

Does anyone remember the old game of moving the rabbit ears on a TV set
for the best reception? A few inches one way or the other could make a
big difference in picture quality.

A wireless computer signal is still a radio wave. I had a very poor
connection when I installed a Squeezebox Radio in the kitchen. After
looking at the situation, I realized I had a washer/dryer sitting in
the direct path between the router and the radio. Moving the router
down two shelves solved the problem - the signal now ran under the
washer/dryer.

As for the sound quality difference, I realize that some have come up
with theories (i.e., when on, the wireless module contaminates the
analog line section, etc.) but I try to follow Occum's Razor on such
things. Subjective influences in humans, conscious and unconscious, are
very well documented and in constant operation in our brains. I'd vote
for that as the most likely to account for your perception, but then
it's also OK. Whatever works to enhance your enjoyment of music is fine
in my book.

Remember that the Touch and earlier Squeezebox players contain a buffer
that collects the incoming data stream and then parcels it out as
needed. I once unplugged the CAT-5 cable to my SB3 and it continued to
play perfectly for 7 or 8 seconds before it stopped. That's a long time
in the world of data transmission.

Also, if you just want to be paranoid, any delay or minor interruption
in a wireless signal can be duplicated on a wired LAN that shares the
data path with other computers.

The only problem with wireless is it can be subject to interference
from other wireless devices such as 2.4 GHz cordless phones, etc. It
that's an issue you're going to notice it and it won't be subtle.
Otherwise, my opinion is that if it is working, don't worry about it
unless you're just determined to have a case of audiophilia nervosa one
way or the other.

The issue has come up in a couple of forums and it seems there is some

The Transporter got an A rating. Having used both in my home system I
find the difference between the two relatively small even without taking
the price difference into account. I would have thought a class B or
at least a C rating would have been appropriate.

Is the Touch just too cheap and small to rate higher? It seems an issue
worth discussing.

I find it a pretty good way to access my music collection; it looks

As much as I like my Touch as a NMP, the unremitting hassle of Tiny SBS

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Question for Audiophiles

2010-09-07 Thread mlsstl

A lot of the skepticism is created by those who declare huge
differences with these types of changes. I realize some get
enthusiastic about such things, but for me, a huge change in sound
quality is moving from a table radio or a boom box to a good system.

With over 40 years in this hobby (and some professional experience)
unless a wire has been clearly defective or completely inappropriate
for the task, the only difference I've ever heard in wires has been
quite subtle.

Now, lots of people will pay serious money for a subtle difference they
consider important. Restaurants with three stars get to charge more than
a restaurant with two, colorless diamonds cost more than those with a
tinge of yellow and so on.

So I'm not suggesting people don't spend their money as they see fit,
but if they could scale back their hyperbole on the Monty Python
silliness scale they might find less derision pointed their way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare

2010-09-06 Thread mlsstl

I have a Touch and use it with an external server. It is a very solid
performer in this capacity and I'm quite pleased with it.

However, in perhaps a half-dozen tries, I've never been successful in
getting the built-in SBS to run well with an external drive with my
full collection. (48,000 songs in variety of formats - mostly FLAC with
some MP3, M4A and WMA) on either of my backups (Western Digital
reformatted EXT3 so the clever and hidden add ons are a non-issue.)

I have been successful when using USB Flash drives and memory cards,
though none of those went past 8 GB.I've essentially lost interest in
spending any more time trying to get it to work correctly as a
stand-alone since my primary interest in owning it is to listen to
music. It does that very well with the external server.

The problem is the Touch is not ready as a consumer product for use as
a standalone server with an external drive. No player meant for use by
non-technical types should have the catalog of limitations and things
to check listed in iPhone's message.

Alternatively, Logitech should sell a certified external drive that
people who are interested in this feature could purchase in order to
bypass the experimentation and gotchas they frequently now encounter.

It would also be fair to list tiny SBS as a beta feature, suitable for
experimentation by the small, adventurous segment of buyers, but
nothing more in my opinion.

Interestingly, Logitech no longer highlights this as a stand-alone
player for external USB hard drives. Under Features their web site
states it can be used with USB flash drives and SD cards. The
specifications page makes a slightly vague reference to USB drives
but says nothing more.

Perhaps if they would have taken this approach from the start there
would have been fewer disappointed customers.

capable of doing these things and that no great technical knowledge was

things would just work. No complicated kabuki ritual required.

It there are limitations to the capabilities of the internal server,

I've used a Touch as a traditional Squeezebox player with an external

So while the Tiny SBS problems don't directly affect my use of the

Depending on how you plan on using the Touch, you may be in the
worry-wart category.

I've had my Touch working in my system for a month and a half now as a
replacement for by SB3 (Classic) and it works excellently as a player
for my existing Squeezebox server system. The sound quality of the
Touch by itself was so good that I chose to sell my external Lavry DAC.

So, just used as a player with an external server, I don't know they
have much tweaking left to do.

The knotty part is if you wish to use the Touch's internal server. In
following the threads (and doing a bit of experimenting myself), this
is where more work is needed if you plan on using a large external USB
drive directly plugged into the Touch.

However, even in that situation, not everyone has a problem. Keep in
mind that Logitech has a 30 day return policy. If you're serious about
wanting a Touch, why not just try it out yourself?

Supporting a 4GB thumb drive was.

Unfortunately, if you read the specifications on Logitech's products
page for the Touch, there are -no- limitations noted regarding external
USB devices.

If the Touch was never meant to be used with large external drives then
Logitech is being their own worst enemy in not warning buyers of these
limitations. That only guarantees a number of customers are going to be
dissatisfied.

That may have more to do with what products get chosen as loss leaders

There are always factors involved that no one outside the company can

20 minutes. Make sure not to try and do anything with the Touch while
 its still scanning.

A 15 or 20 minute wait on power up before one can play music pretty
much makes the Touch rather useless as a stand alone server if the user
wants USB drive powered off when he's not listening.

I bought my Touch to use as a player for my existing Squeezebox music
server system. It has worked quite well in that capacity (though it's
had a few flaky moments that are reminiscent of the early Duet) so I'm
pretty happy.

However, out of curiosity, I gave the Touch stand alone server three
solid tries with two different external USB drives and never did get
satisfactory results. If I'd bought the Touch solely for use in that
capacity, I'd be very disappointed - that option is way too erratic for
me.

Maybe the word is touchy

So I have been eagerly waiting for the Touch, especially because of the
embedded server and 24/94 capability. Unfortunately, I have to say I'm
 having an horrible experience:

 - I have an external drive with 120GB of music (with its own power
supply). The embedded server fails, I would say, 4 out of 5 times it
tries to scan the drive. Most of the times it blocks for no obvious
 reason. No error messages, nothing
I agree. The Touch - used as a player with an external server - works
fine and gives superb audio quality.

While I was able to successfully use the internal server with a 2GB
flash drive, I've yet for it to fully scan my external USB drive with
46,000 songs without crashing (and I've tried 2 different drives.)

The biggest frustration for me is that they delayed release four months
to fix the internal server so that things would be perfect for the mass
market consumer. Given the widespread problems with the internal server
after that long delay, I'd sure hate to think just how persnickety Tiny
SBS was last December!

If nothing else, you might find that you can buy the Touch on sale and
then turn around and sell the Receiver unit only from your Duet set and
not have your out-of-pocket be all that much.

Receivers are out-of-stock in the USA right now from new retailers. As
such, used ones are going for a premium. Amazon has one listed used for
$195 and the last one I saw sold on eBay last week went for over $200.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Scan experiences with the internal squeezebox server of the Touch (USB-HD)

2010-04-30 Thread mlsstl

While I'm very pleased with the performance of the Touch with my
external music server (46,000 songs) I've not had a successful scan by
the built-in server in three tries with two different copies of the
external backup drives. The first scan ran 14 or 15 hours before I gave
up. The next two tries seemed to scan through the drive in 4 or 5 hours
only to have the internal server crash at the very end. (And yes,
firmware is up to date.)

I did try it with a 2 GB USB flash drive and it all worked very nicely.

Since the Touch works extremely well for the purpose I bought it for,
I'm pleased. However, I can't say I'm impressed with the Tiny SBS
function, especially since this was the cause of the four month delay
in product release.

First, I have a Duet and it works fine. The initial software/firmware

versions. I haven't had any significant issues for quite some time.

Second, the Touch's release was intentionally delayed to minimize those

Of course, no product ever made by any company is going to work
perfectly for everyone. It is simply impossible for a computer products

computers, operating systems software installation, wireless routers

If you look back through the forum archives, you'll find people who had

As a point of clarification - I'm using it as a player and controller,
not a server. I may do that at one point to tinker.

There's the rub. The whole point of the delay was to get the Touch's
built-in server working better. If you read though some of the other
threads regarding painfully long scan times and outright crashes, it
seems that work wasn't quite finished.

I bought my Touch to use as a player with an existing server and that
works great.

However, I've done some tinkering with the built-in server. With a
small thumb drive it worked very nicely. When I hooked up my main
backup drive with 48,000 songs, it still hadn't finished a scan at 15
or 16 hours and it wouldn't play some material (M4A) that is supposed
to be native.

I'm a satisfied user because it does what I bought it to do, but it was
sad to see reason for the delay - fixing the built-in server - still
seems to have problems. I'm sure I'll tinker again, but I'm going to
have to block out a good chunk of time where I don't want to play any
music just to experiment.

I let the USB drive run overnight and I don't think it ever did complete
a scan. However, it did play any music that I selected through the
folder directory (other than the iTunes material.)

I umounted the drive from the Touch and checked it on my linux PC and
it seems to be OK. I'm not sure what the story is about this. (A 2 GB
flash drive with a selection of music on it mounted in a couple of
minutes and seemed to behave as others indicated it should.)

I don't think I'm going to spend anymore time on this issue right now.
I'll just hang back and see what others experience over the next week
or two.

 Touch with digital outputs.

I've not done a A/B blind test with the analogue outputs, I've just
compared the SB3 and Touch by switching the receiver inputs myself.

I've used a SB3 with a Lavry DA10 DAC for the past couple of years as
my primary music source.

The Touch arrived Friday and I spent quite a bit of time the past
couple of days listening to the Touch. I level-matched the SB3/Lavry
output with the Touch and synced the two players. I was then able to
switch between the two inputs for back-to-back comparison.

The difference between the SB3 analog out and though the Lavry is quite
noticeable to me (though I don't consider the SB3 analog bad - just
rather pedestrian.)

In comparing the Touch analog out to the SB3/Lavry, the difference is
extremely subtle in my book. I have to strain to hear the difference. I
am very impressed and will probably end up selling my Lavry. In
audiophile-land, the Touch has no right to sound as good as it does for
the price. ;-)

However, I'm sure others will disagree with that thinking, but that's
fine by me. When I have to strain to hear the difference between two
pieces of equipment, that's a sign for me to let go of the issue and
just enjoy the music.

Sorry I wasn't clear. Let me try again.

1. The Lavry sounds like the Lavry whether I'm using the SB3 or the

2. As such, my original comments about the analog output of the Touch
compared to the Lavry still stand. On day 3 of listening, things are

So, in that sense, the analog output of the Touch is definitively

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?

2010-04-07 Thread mlsstl

Called Logitech Sales (1-800-231-7717) to inquire about the status of my
preorder.

The status indicator on the website shows my order is in-process -
this is what it has shown for quite some time.

When I reached Ben on the phone, he said the Touch has not been
released and his sales manager says it won't be released until July.

When I checked the Logitech web sales site earlier today, it showed the
Touch was in-stock. When I looked at it while talking to Ben, it
showed out-of-stock.

I explained that MickyG, the program manager, just posted a release
announcement for the Touch on the Slimdevices forum. Ben didn't
believe me and he didn't particularly care what others at Logitech were
saying.

I can see the left hand still doesn't know what the right hand is up
to.

Why do I have this bad feeling that having pre-ordered a Touch may turn
out to have only been a sure way to place one's self at the bottom of
the list?

Radio battery anyone?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Why Purchase a Touch??

2010-04-02 Thread mlsstl

Though others have said this in a bit of a beat-around-the-bush way, one
big attraction for me is the Squeezebox system makes it very easy to run
multiple stereo systems off of one music source. Add a player to the
network and that's that.

I also find the sound is excellent and easily upgradeable if one wants
to improve on the stock units I've had to date.

I know playlist creation isn't quite as easy on the Squeezeboxserver as
some other programs, but I can count the number of playlists I've
created over the past 7 or 8 years of using a computer for music
playback on one hand.

When I sit down for serious listening I've only decided what I want to
listen to at that moment. Yesterday's, last week's or last month's
music choices aren't very relevant to me. I realize some people put
together extensive playlists for parties and the like, but that's not
particularly useful to me. So it is meaningless to me that some other
programs make playlist creation easier.

It'd be interesting to do a survey to map out users on a scale that
runs from serious playlist creators to casual users to those like me
who rarely use them.
