I think the theme is quite finished. The only thing I'm not sure about is the lack of highlights at the top corners of the metacity that makes it unfinished. It said I had to be in the 'fuse' group, which I am, so I'm not sure what's wrong there... it as iPod_, [then] iPod__ and keeps adding underscores each time It's probably because the first instance hasn't been unmounted---but even so, it should be giving the same device the same name. Bug. I does that even when I sudo umount the iTouch. Reconnect it and it becomes iPod_ then iPod__ (etc.) it seems to want the iTouch's unique ID, It should really be fetching that itself, but off the top of my head: lsusb -vv | grep iSerial The reason is that iTunesDB files have to be signed with the ID of the device in question. Your converts' v1 iTouch/iPhone has the earlier iPhone software version and so won't require signed iTunesDB database files. Even using the old method of getting the ID and putting it in the SysInfo (of the iPod/Touch) doesn't work. Amarok still won't work with it. As far as Amarok is concerned, it isn't mounted (when it is, I can see the files on the iTouch). Even selecting the 8gb iTouch black from the Amarok list can't convince Amarok to connect... I even tried (from using Google) the ipod-touch-mount (and umount) pre (and post) commands in Amarok but still no joy. I think the logo is all that needs to remain constant.. And we have that.. I just wanted to raise the subject of Art development and management within Ubuntu Studio. As many of you may know, Cory Kontros has stepped away from the project for personal reasons and he had previously been spearheading the art portion of Ubuntu Studio. It's my opinion that Cory left us with a great default art set, but if it's left to sit still, chances are our users will find it stale soon enough. That's why I'd like to put a call out for a new art manager. The ideal candidate will not be placed directly into this position, she/he will have to show they deserve it. However, they should have knowledge of theming all aspects of the gnome desktop (including boot splash and GDM). Is anyone out there interested? I think the first step is to upload your work/modifications/etc... to either a new launchpad bzr or to the user art page in the wiki. So while I appreciate that for users this stuff is not really suitable, for a member of a development team it is. What is the UBUNTU motto? Linux for human beings. Yep exactly. but it still takes people with knowledge to make it that way. Consider the zip idea I mentioned GTK themes are already done with archive files (.tar.gz). However this is more than just a theme, it is making sure that everything withing the theme works, the look and feel of the desktop, and much more, as mentioned in the above emails. Once again this is not just about users submitting themes, it is about an Art lead position in a development team. Also, bzr is not actually that hard to use, it takes less than an hour to learn competently (and I am not a coder before you jump on that). Sorry guys for the last letter, I was being unproductive.. I have a tendency to go into micromanager mode.. And I know this stuff is complex and tough, and that you don't have control over the general way that Ubuntu works, but this is something to think about and bring to round table discussions with canonical or whoever might be able to make this happen. could arrange to make blender blend files that would manage the compositing and texturing/lighting/rendering of the elements, which is something you can do with blender. You can run blender like a blackbox, providing input and generating output, I once wrangled and animation unattended from a Makefile. I'm missing you here. :) What does this mean? Check out UV texture mapping in blender. Here is a link.. The way to project textures onto soldiers in games, is the same way you could skin an interface. If you can do this, you can have the textures for the interface generated by performing renders in blender on objects. Objects can have bump maps, specular maps, reflection maps, transparency maps, a lot more choices for presentation than what GIMP can provide. These attributes can be changed, combined and rendered to an image file. You can then skin the look with these elements by extracting the cookie cutter shapes from the images. Kind of like how UV texturing occurs on 3D surfaces. If you've ever made a mod for quake or some game and wanted to change the look of a character, you've dealt with a UV map. Black box program = program that only has one input and one output . Black box blender render = rendering of images from parameters and a input blend file, without using the blender GUI, all from the command line. Makefile blender wrangling: Write a makefile that automates the chore of rendering an animation by taking advantage of the fact that Make only compares the file modification times to determine if things have changed and to regenerate dependencies when things have, which is all make does.. Make is language-less and application-less. I used it to automate the process of rendering and compositing an animation. However I did this years before blender had any wrangling software. An example of a makefile that uses blender: animation: animation.mpg scene1 scene2 scene3 blender -b composite_animation.blend scene1: scene1.blend blender -b scene1.blend scene2: scene2.blend blender -b scene2.blend scene3: scene3.blend blender -b scene3.blend -- Something like this.. I'll have to go look at that makefile to see how I did it. I was required in college to write a working make in C++. So knowing how it worked, I was able to make use of it for wrangling blender renders. Actually if you are crafty you can do this all within a single blend file using the feature of sequence editor that permits you to include clips of pre-rendered scenes. But at the time I didn't know how to do that stuff. I think any single theme, is a bad idea.. IF it's going to be about creativity, it should permit a wide range of themes, and these should be community created.. That means the elements should be accessible and selective by the community, as what good is a creative operating system if the elements of the interface are not being created by it's creative users. Yes I think hsdpa refers to a section in a wvdial file. A section is inclosed in square brackets [] if you use the section [dialer defaults] you don't need to call the section so you would just type wvdial and the command prompt not wvdial hsdpa. However I don't think thats your problem as it looked like it used the default section as a fall back when it couldn't find hsdpa. Where did you get that mobile number most 3g modems I know use a short code such as *99# to dial 3g. Next question is do you require a username and password (ie did voda provide you one) if not they should be blank. Do you get the network manager wizard when you plug in the device? If not try this: Right click on the network manager applet Select the mobile broadband tab Click add Click forward Select vodafone from the list of providers Click forward Give it a name - the default vodafone should be fine Click Apply (Left) Click on the network manager applet Select vodafone from the list Point your browser to google.com.au Be impressed that it loaded Go to http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au and order some beer for the network manager developers :) (Note: the Around the World in Twenty Beers Pack is really good). PCI / PCIe / USB or whatever?
Hello everybody, I want to set up a simple easy-to-use homerecording studio with Ubuntu Studio. So i got a ThinkCentre Workstation Small Form Factor for a good price. My old PC got a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 but the card doesn't fit into the SFF Workstation. Damn! So now I think of some USB Audio Interface, haven't found any PCI/PCIe low-profile soundcard. So with USB Interface comes with full functionality, I read that some devices aren't generic and doesn't work properly. At least I only need two IO channels. Any suggestions? But this is really probably easier for you, than it is for me. I have a computer science degree with a minor in art, and I can understand how hard this is to wade through for users who would be eager to help, but can't make heads or tales of a RCS. If you can lower the bar of entry, I'm sure you will open a floodgate of theming. Have a look at the blender program distribution, you will notice that there is a texture plugin and sequence plugin folder with source code (even for the windows version) for making texture and video transition plugins. Something like that would be nice to have for the interface, but it may require a fundamental change in how the interface integrates with the theming, which may not be possible, or might require help from canonical or debian. If it is already there, it needs to be visible and easy to access. The zip idea I gave would be a nice simple way to package and distribute the themes. This is borrowing from the way that blender distributes entire projects, by puting everything into a .blend file. Also note the blend files are forward and backward compatible. Load a 2.49 blend file on a 1.18 version of blender, it filters out whatever primitives have not changed in the file format (I think it's just one large struct dumped to a file, but it is a clever method). But anyone can clone this method with a special folder structure into zip files. The zip files also permit one to work on the themes without regard for location in the folder tree. By simplifying the theming to a compressed file, you permit people to contribute without having to become emersed in the code and complexity of the operating system or packaging, and you permit people to pass themes around over email and with reference links. Also another feature of the blend files in blender, is any blender file can be used as a library of accessible materials, objects, scenes, etc.. You can import from blend files. Same could be done with a zip file. Then you could have people code programs to manage these themes, to combine elements and make new themes. Sorry.. I'm just like this when I think about stuff.. Most musicians don't know anything about computers, I dare you to find some who do. Most artists don't know anything about computers.. I dare you to find some who do. Same with video professionals.. While they still may know something about electrical engineering and designing a NTSC black generator from the ground up, you are not going to find a common ground in the code, or with puting requirements on people, to write source code. This is totally unacceptable, and this project and others will die with this approach. This is why Linux sucks and Ubuntu needs to be different.. What is the UBUNTU motto? Linux for human beings. Consider the zip idea I mentioned. For anything that needs code, we could get packages that add special widgets and such.. Theming is really just data.. So why isn't it as simple as that.. Sorry guys for the last letter, I was being unproductive.. I have a tendency to go into micromanager mode.. And I know this stuff is complex and tough, and that you don't have control over the general way that Ubuntu works, but this is something to think about and bring to round table discussions with canonical or whoever might be able to make this happen. could arrange to make blender blend files that would manage the compositing and texturing/lighting/rendering of the elements, which is something you can do with blender. You can run blender like a blackbox, providing input and generating output, I once wrangled and animation unattended from a Makefile. I'm missing you here. :) What does this mean? Check out UV texture mapping in blender. Here is a link.. The way to project textures onto soldiers in games, is the same way you could skin an interface. If you can do this, you can have the textures for the interface generated by performing renders in blender on objects. Objects can have bump maps, specular maps, reflection maps, transparency maps, a lot more choices for presentation than what GIMP can provide. These attributes can be changed, combined and rendered to an image file. You can then skin the look with these elements by extracting the cookie cutter shapes from the images. Kind of like how UV texturing occurs on 3D surfaces. If you've ever made a mod for quake or some game and wanted to change the look of a character, you've dealt with a UV map. Black box program = program that only has one input and one output . Black box blender render = rendering of images from parameters and a input blend file, without using the blender GUI, all from the command line. Makefile blender wrangling: Write a makefile that automates the chore of rendering an animation by taking advantage of the fact that Make only compares the file modification times to determine if things have changed and to regenerate dependencies when things have, which is all make does.. Make is language-less and application-less. I used it to automate the process of rendering and compositing an animation. However I did this years before blender had any wrangling software. An example of a makefile that uses blender: animation: animation.mpg scene1 scene2 scene3 blender -b composite_animation.blend scene1: scene1.blend blender -b scene1.blend scene2: scene2.blend blender -b scene2.blend scene3: scene3.blend blender -b scene3.blend -- Something like this.. I'll have to go look at that makefile to see how I did it. I was required in college to write a working make in C++. So knowing how it worked, I was able to make use of it for wrangling blender renders. Actually if you are crafty you can do this all within a single blend file using the feature of sequence editor that permits you to include clips of pre-rendered scenes. But at the time I didn't know how to do that stuff. I think any single theme, is a bad idea.. IF it's going to be about creativity, it should permit a wide range of themes, and these should be community created.. That means the elements should be accessible and selective by the community, as what good is a creative operating system if the elements of the interface are not being created by it's creative users. I'm sorry but I gotta say that's a bit naive. (but completely understandable) What's naive about simplicity? Some people make things complex for politics sake.. I thought Linux would grow, if it could leave behind the politics of commercial software development behind.. Jussi Schultink (jussi01) Kiernan, I completely empathize with your frustrations with Linux, but I think your critique of Linux 'sucking' because it is not user-friendly is a bit misplaced. It can't be seriously claimed that Linux is a bad system, only that it is very difficult to use. However, many many people are okay with this, because this lack of user-friendliness quite often comes as a result of providing unparalleled versatility and stability. Now, Ubuntu can quite fairly be criticized for having poor usability because this distribution's focus is on being a user-friendly desktop (as you mentioned). There is no doubt that Ubuntu is so far the best in this regard, but there is still a long way to go before it can be claimed to be truly easy to use for the average person. That's a part of the reason a lot of us are on this list, though: to help work towards making this a better project. Ardour, Blender, Pro-Tools, Autocad, these are examples of things that I believe are necessarily complex. I have the latest version of Ubuntu Studio (Karmic) and just re-installed it today. I use non-pulse applications, including Audacity and Dragon NaturallySpeaking running under wine. I have tried disabling pulseaudio every way I know how. I am getting no sound, mostly due to what are described as timeout errors. Ubuntu has been working to make it run with pulseaudio properly disabled, so that the few of us who don't want it don't have to have it. There is now an option among System / Preferences / Startup Applications that prevents it from starting up. But the whole thing appears to have growing pains, and more than a few bugs. (I filed one or two.) I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking for years and I thought I knew every work-around in the book to get sound running without pulseaudio, either using alsa or oss or alsa-oss. I have tried most of them in the past 3 days, but I'm giving up, and waiting for updates. It seems to work, but I don't know what it is actually doing. Here is a tutorial I made on youtube covering it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN70LNMdGo0 There is also a tutorial somewhere about why not to remove pulse, that it removes gnome-desktop.. I also don't know what the problem is with that. Cool.. I got an ultra cheap USB baord off ebay, and was wondering about this, seems it isn't supported: C-Media CMI6206 They are selling on ebay for about 20 dollars, but would be one heck of a sound device if it was supported. It has mic in, spdif in, spdif out, line in, front out, rear out, and Bass out. (sounds like 4.1), though they claim it is a 7.1 . Alsa sees it but doesn't seem to know enough to give it the right controls. What's naive about simplicity? Simplicity is not always the best. Some things need to be complex. Ardour, Blender, Pro-Tools, Autocad, these are examples of things that I believe are necessarily complex. Of course I still believe that there is room for improvement in usability, but I do not think that simplicity should always be the goal. Well you can't make a make great music button.. But with Patchage, routing audio can be quite easy. Blender is only as complex as a 3D program normally is, if you look at any other 3D package you will see that. What I'm talking about is not having to scour the folders of linux to get something done. I also know that Linux is inspired by Unix, that simplified computers by making everything a file, so simplicity takes different forms, but there is need for higher-level access to the low-level system, and it can be done without losing flexibility. For example using sliders to select enumerated values rather than having to parse a text file which is more error prone than using a program that has intimate knowledge of say a binary file or a XML format. Gconf-editor and about:config in firefox are perfect examples. One thing I've noticed about many artists and musicians, is that they will learn a complex program if it gets the job done (so complex that a programmer would have a hard time finding their way around in it), but they cringe when having to navigate the internals of the Linux filesystem and read text files and so on. So the solution is just a different interface that doesn't require typing. Some people make things complex for politics sake.. I thought Linux would grow, if it could leave behind the politics of commercial software development behind.. But I guess I was wrong. No, what I'm talking about is the focus on making things complex for the sake of selling software.. It does occur.. Examples given.. In Enterprise software development, companies will write software in obscure languages for the sole purpose of avoiding being succeeded by outsourced coders in say india, that would have access to C compilers (GCC), but wouldn't easily have access to something like Delphi or C# . There are other examples of unecessary complexity, such as what Java was supposed to be, and what it is. The minute Sun decided to deprecate any arm of the Java tree, they disobeyed the assumption that Java was write once, run anywhere. They did this for commercial reasons, I'm sure. But there is no reason to drop accessibility to features, unless you are worried about support and believe people will get confused and such. I doubt it has anything to do with efficiency, pointers allow for simplicity and efficiency, if we had not used memory pointers, modern computing would not be possible. And what is an arm of options in a programming language than a library, and a pointer to the library. Sorry confusing this with programmers you know.. But there are some in the linux crowd who I believe don't see any reason in fixing things because it let in the simple-minded wackos. And that's politics. But the truth is, if you want linux to be adopted, it doesn't have to be like a Mac or Windows, things just need to be more accessible, by other interfaces. The example I gave above was typing can be a barrier to entry. How many people do you know who can and can't type, then how many people do you know who can type, but can't manage the interaction with the computer. Each hurdle reduces the size of your audience. For the record, I once blew up my Amiga 1000 keyboard (cause it has a phone jack, and I connected it to the phone jack terminal), and was able to make music with it for a year without the use of the keyboard. The only time I had to use the keyboard was to save files, and I used copy and paste on the file requester. Esound is what I was using before. It uses oss (or in my case, I think,
alsa-oss).
I was using the following set of directions, and they worked until
recently.
I haven't deinstalled alsa, so it must be doing something like that.
When I have sound problems, I usually try compiling and installing alsa from
the alsa website. Ubuntu resources tend to be out of date. I had to do this
for my acer aspire to get it sound support on Ubuntu. I've got a Aspire
dual booted for XP and Ubuntu Studio 9.04 (ZynAddSubFx works pretty well on
it too), all without formatting the hard drive (gparted is cool).
sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source
sudo module-assistant a-i alsa-source
reboot
I think to compile alsa, you just get build-essentials
and make. Then you download the driver tar file, unarchive the source,
and do the usual
cd source_folder_here
chmod 755 ./configure # or 644 or whatever you are comfortable with
./configure # checks dependencies and configures
makefile
make # compiles everything
sudo make install# installs it..
The build-dep part of apt comes in useful if you have to compile something
like Wine which has a lot of dependencies.. But alsa doesn't have any
unusual dependencies, it should do well on a base install of Ubuntu (and
build-essentials and make installed).
Maybe I'll try again, and watch your video.

Confesso que é culpa minha, pois é herança do tempo que trabalhei na Conectiva. Também tem o K3B, K9Copy, digiKam e Amarok que são vícios antigos e uso muito o que me fazem por fim ficar no KDE. [Ubuntu-BR] alterar permissões de cartão sd
Povo conectei um cartão micro sd 2g no meu desktop através de um adaptador sd. No entanto não consigo copiar nada para o cartão pq diz que: o objeto está inacessível o objeto não pode ser acessado devido a direitos insuficientes do usuário. tentei clicar em propriedades e alterar a permissões mas não obtive sucesso, aparece o seguinte erro: Desculpe, não foi possível alterar as permissões de disk: Erro ao definir permissões: Sistema de arquivos somente-leitura. Vamos lá... coloquei o cartão de volta no celular, acessei os arquivos, apaguei alguns, lá tb não consegui alterar as permissões. Desmontei o volume, retirei do celular, coloquei novamente no adaptador e pluguei no meu leitor de cartões. E ai? para minha surpresa pude acessar os arquivos, copiar, excluir e tudo mais. Tentei o Evolution mas não me adaptei. Gostei muito do Gnome nas duas vezes que tentei migrar para ele, mas onde trabalho, e sou reponsável pela área de TI só usam KDE. Confesso que é culpa minha, pois é herança do tempo que trabalhei na Conectiva. Também tem o K3B, K9Copy, digiKam e Amarok que são vícios antigos e uso muito o que me fazem por fim ficar no KDE. Pena que o Kubuntu não tem a comunidade que o Ubuntu, por isso tenho que me virar quase que sozinho por vezes. Mas não abandono a distro (K)Ubuntu e por isso sigo essa lista, aqui aprendo muito do sistema como um todo. [Ubuntu-BR] vpn e segurança
Uso aqui em casa internet fornecida via vpn (não sei pq a empresa fornece assim, mas enfim) ... alguns dias atrás alguns amigos me falaram que quando estou conectado na vpn os técnicos da empresa de internet conseguem ter acesso direto a minha máquina, conseguindo inclusive acessar minhas pastas. Alguém sabe me dizer se isso é possível? Se é, existe alguma ferramenta para o ubuntu que possa impedir q isso ocorra? tem como eu monitorar essas tentativas de acesso a minha máquina? Tenho firewall instalado, mas não tenho idéia de onde ver os relatórios das atividades do firewall. Erasmo, O que acontece numa vpn é que vc se conecta a sua empresa e passa a fazer parte da rede dela como se sua máquina estivesse fisicamente na empresa. Todos os serviços e todo o tipo de acesso que vc tem dentro da empresa passam a valer quando vc está conectado a vpn. Quanto a empresa ter acesso aos seus dados, não eh bem por ai não. Imagine sempre como se sua máquina fosse conectada num dos pontos de rede de sua empresa. Os técnicos teriam acesso a ela? Depende de como vc compartilha seus dados. O que pode acontecer eh voce ter um monitoramento do que você faz na internet, já que voce passa a navegar pela rede da empresa, então se eles a monitoram, monitorariam sua máquina tb. Na duvida, sugiro a vc conectar a vpn apenas quando for nescessário, tipo, aqui na empresa, soh conseguimos mandar e-mail através do nosso servidor se estivermos dentro da rede da empresa, ou seja, pra enviar e-mail de minha casa, por exemplo, eu preciso conectar a vpn. Acontece que aqui em casa o meu provedor me fornece a internet via vpn, achei esquisito pq normalmente se usa vpn em máquinas de uma mesma empresa e talz. Nunca tinha visto fornecer um serviço dessa forma. Quanto a monitorar o q eu faço na rede qq provedor poderia fazê-lo (independente de usar ou naum vpn) analisando os logs de minha navegação. Tentei conversar com um amigo da empresa ele desconversou sobre o assunto. Disse q não seria interessante para o provedor acessar minha máquina. Quando falei q o firewall do norton tinha detectado algumas tentativas de acessar minha máquina, e que o ip de quem tava tentando era igual ao dns deles... ele me disse q podia ter alguém na rede tentando acessar minha máquina mas que não seria especificamente da empresa, podia ser qq um conectado na vpn. Meu notebook é um Microboard(u342) que vem por padrão a distro ubuntu personalizada ja com todos os driver's intalado, como eu utilizo o mint dei uma garibada na net e achei este link http://ubuntuforum-br.org/index.php?topic=52319.msg300467#msg300467 Conseguir instalar sem maiores problema, o problema e que na minha empresa a wireless tenha senha eu consigo ate conectar na wireless so que quando eu coloco o proxy da rede ele nao abre a tela de autenticação do usuario no proxy, resumindo estou conectado mais nao consigo fazer nada. [Ubuntu-BR] Problemas com o cron
Boa tarde. Por caso alguém já passou pela seguinte situação: temos instalado um Ubuntu server 8.04 que está dando problema direto com o cron, estou tentando reinstalá-lo sem sucesso. Já usei o configure (dpkg --configure -a ), já removi com o purge e tentei instalar novamente já tentei inumeras coisas sem sucesso. Dancei... sinceramente não, ainda não cheguei nessa parte talvez por não me preocupar com isso no Ubuntu. A única que coisa que faço esporadicamente é monitorar a entrada e saída de dados quando on line. Aqui mantenho meus dados em outro hd não montado pelo sistema ou em outras mídias desconectadas. Só faço transferências ou modificações nestes quando estou off e as desmonto quando vou trabalhar on line. Mas a turma pode te dar informações sobre isso. Assim ela se protege dos usuários, mas não protege os usuários dela própria (talvez nem de outros usuários). Os usuários que puderem manter um gateway em casa, podem fazer[1] o mesmo: proteger-se da empresa. É por isso, inclusive, que a idéia não faz sentido; usuários que desejam se proteger (todos?) podem anular o efeito da VPN. [1] A contradição aqui, talvez, é que cuidar de assuntos técnicos da rede, incluindo um mínino de segurança e privacidade, é da empresa-prestadora-de-serviço. Desmontei o volume, retirei do celular, coloquei novamente no adaptador e pluguei no meu leitor de cartões. E ai? para minha surpresa pude acessar os arquivos, copiar, excluir e tudo mais. Agora q é estranho esse tipo de comportamento é. Você chegou a reiniciar a máquina neste meio tempo? Digo isso, porque já vi isso acontecer, mas não com SD. O problema é que um módulo somente subia depois de outro e o primeiro só subia depois de a gente espetar o hardware (era USB) na segunda vez. Sei que o depmod é para evitar isso, mas... O que eu gostei dele é que eu posso refletir o som da máquina acessada para a máquina cliente, assim, se eu tiver um leitor de telas na máquina que trabalhará como servidor, tá tudo beleza. Então, fiz um teste: Conectei de casa na minha máquina do trabalho e mandei transferir o som pra casa. Tudo funcionou muito bem. acessei os aplicativos através dela sem problemas, mesmo sendo o servidor uma máquina windows. Só tive um problema. como Minimizar ou fechar a conexão remota? Qualquer comando de teclado que eu desse refletia na minha máquina do trabalho. Como comandar o cliente nesses casos? Visto que por ser cego não utilizo mouse, existe solução? Só falta isso. Abraços. [Ubuntu-BR] Problemas com Maldito Driver de Víde o
Galera, Eu baxei um driver de vídeo do site do meu fabricante para linux ( distro Satux ) o arquivo era um .deb Daí eu executei o mesmo no terminal com o comando: # sudo dpkg i driver.deb Rebutei meu ubuntu e agora ele não carrega mais a área visual. Tentei start o X manualmente e nada.. Um amigo me pediu para mudar o arquivo /etc/X11/xorg.conf para mudar o Device Driver para vesa. Porem continua com o mesmo erro... alguém poderia me ajudar.. Tenho firewall instalado, mas não tenho idéia de onde ver os relatórios das atividades do firewall. Instala o GUFW. Depois ativa-o e deixa-o rodando por um tempo. Para ver o seu log: File - Firewall Log. Uma vez recebi uma mensagem de alguém tentando invadir, mas era eu mesmo. O fato de que as portas do Linux Desktop padrão serem todas fechadas para tráfico de entrada é uma segurança e tanta.
