[users] DRAW and PDF

2008-12-17 Thread lionel seydoux

Hello to all,

With Open office 3.0.0 and yesterday's bêta version of pdfimport running
under Windows XP Pro SP3,
as I want to edit it I tred to load from a pdf document a page with a map
apparently created by a vectorial drawing software.

It does load with a perfect precision of images. But the one hundred or so
elements are dissasembled and scattered all around. I have to re-assemble
them, fairly easy for maps (a simple puzzle), but takes time and impossible
for many vectorial pics.

Hypothesis:
- a bug in pdfimport? I could not post a question in sun's bug report system
which does not mention pdfimport

- a bug while translating this image to pdf?
- or a bug in myself (usually the most probable...)

I did not try with other pdf pictures, will report when I have time to do so

Bye

[users] Having dictionary problems in OOo 3.0.?

2008-12-17 Thread James Elliott - WA Rural Computers
After mucking around for three days I have finally managed to install and
English (Australia) dictionary.

Here are the steps I followed which might be of some use to others who have
lost their version 2.4, or earlier, dictionaries. I use Windows XP and have
installed the Australian dictionary, but you can make the necessary changes
to install your own language dictionary under your own OS.

1. Download the English (Australian) dictionary from:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/AustralianDictionary
(thanks, Manfred, for the URL)

2. Save the dictionary file to a folder you can locate later.

3. Open OOo Writer (ver 3.0)

4. Click on: Tools > Extension Manager > "ADD" button

5. In the 'Open' dialogue box, navigate to the folder where you saved your
dictionary file and double click on it (which will open it, and add it to
the list in Extension Manager)

6. Restart your computer

7. Open OOo Writer 3.0

8. Click on: Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids > Edit,
and select English (Australia) (make sure the Hunspell SpellChecker box is
ticked)

9. Close back to Language Settings, and this time click on Languages

10. Configure Languages as below:

-- User interface: Default
-- Locale setting: English (Australia)
-- Decimal separator key: tick 'same as locale setting'
-- Default currency: English (Australian)
-- Default languages for documents: English (Australia) (there should be a
large tick before the words English (Australia) if the dictionary is
properly installed)

This worked for me and I hope it helps someone else.

Kind regards, James

Stick with 2.4 more reliable when saving documents, new ver 3 does not

However, this is not an acceptable solution. I have thousands of

I'll keep playing with it.

The computer is Intrepid x86_64 with Gnome.

I don't understand what you mean by posting the output of
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice. That is the command to launch it.

However, I can post the error report that gets set to Sun:

procpath="/opt/openoffice.org3/program/"/>

There's nothing in it that makes any sense to me other than the first few
lines. All the checksum errors make it look as though the files are corrupted,
but dpkg installed everything without error.

You may be confusing two things here. Like most office products,
OpenOffice Draw is geared towards creating printed output. And if you
print your document or export it to PDF, you may well find that your
line is sufficiently straight. But compared with most printers, your
computer's screen has a comparatively coarse resolution, of course.
And it is impossible within the limitations of the screen pixels to
create an exactly straight line display. So the screen image within
Draw shows a poor imitation, but you may find the final printed or
exported result satisfactory.

You can also get an idea of what is happening here if you change the
zoom factor at View | Zoom... . Your line will still be imperfect,
but will be different in detail from before. This demonstrates that
it is the display of your line, rather than the line itself, which is
the limitation.

I trust this helps.

It's physically impossible to draw a perfectly straight line on a
computer monitor, as the display is composed of discrete units called
"pixels". Is that what you're referring to? I see those lines too, but
I have to look very closely to see them. If that's what you're talking
about, then I doubt MS Office could do much better. BTW, what component
of MS Office does your friend use, considering there's nothing
comparable to Draw in it?

Hi Brian

With regard to: "Just as you would expect, if you have so far not installed
it."; it might help if you described how to install it, instead of making
smart Alec remarks.

"Until you perform the necessary installation, nothing will improve,
of course. Do I hear you saying that you don't have time to work this out
but implying that others might find that time on your behalf? Hmmm..."

"Hmmm", indeed! For what it is worth, what I meant is that after spending
several hours a day for three consecutive days, without any useful help from
the list, I could not justify taking any more time out of my work ("work"
being that which puts bread on my family's table). No ... I do not expect
anyone else to put in the time I have devoted to this matter, namely 12
hours over three days. What I expect is that if this IS a COMMUNITY of like
minded people, perhaps one of them could take a moment to point me in the
right direction without denigrating my character, or attempting to start a
flame war.

As you premised: "> I don't think you can have been following this list for
the last few
months without picking up the fact that dictionaries are handled
differently in version 3".
I have not been following the list for a while, as I have been overseas.
So, if one cannot access the list for a while, then one is no longer welcome
to post queries - is that what you are saying?

"If you didn't know where to find this dictionary - as I didn't, of
course - you could find it by going to Tools | Extension Manager...,
following the "Get more extensions here..." link, and either browsing to
what you need or doing a search on "Australian".
I tried that and the only two options were English(UK) and English(US), and
the only option was to "Remove", not add new ones, but I have obviously
missed something. Over the Christmas-New-Year break I will have some free
time and I will look into this further, probably without help from the list.

How can someone who is starting a flame can end with: "I trust this helps",
beggars belief - It does not, In fact it diminishes the whole community.
Even M$ are polite in dealing with queries, even if the often, but not
always, charge for doing so.

I don't think you can have been following this list for the last few

o Go to http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/node/1232 and download
the English Australian Dictionary (27 November version) in its new form.
Put the .oxt file somewhere that you can keep it.
o Double-click the .oxt file to run OpenOffice's Extension Manager and
follow the instructions to install the dictionary.
o While you are there, you may wish to disable any installed dictionaries
that you know you will not need.
o Now tinker appropriately with the language and dictionary settings in
Tools | Options... (and possibly in existing documents).

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I followed them to the letter.
When I used the soffice launcher that I created a window popped up
telling me that I should file an error report with OOo. I told it to
skip the report. It then displayed the splash screen. I clicked to open
a Writer document, whereupon it crashed completely.

That is exactly the state it was in before I purged everything and
reinstalled with your instructions.

Since I had the backups of the config files I decided to
rename .openoffice.org2 just to see if the config file is the source of
the trouble. Supposedly it will generate a new one. However, when I
relaunched it I couldn't get it to stay up long enough to create a new
config file.

So then I relaunched it with the intent of following through with the
error report instead of skipping it. I did so and the report was sent
off. This left me with the splash screen again. But instead of
immediately opening a Writer document I exited the program. My plan was
to clear out the error status. After closing it down I relaunched it.
My plan worked - the splash screen came up without the error message. I
clicked to open a Writer document, and it crashed again.

At this point I can't even launch it.

In view of the fact that the church "borrowed" pagan or Roman holidays
and called them Christmas, Happy Saturnalia. Might as well celebrate
the original, instead of the hijacked version. Or perhaps celebrate
Yule if you desire. Both of these are based on the winter solstice,
which the church then stole and passed off as "Christ's" birthday, to
make it easier for "pagans" to convert. The ancient Britons at
Stonehenge seemed to be a bit interested in the solstice too, a couple
of thousand or so years before Christ (if he even existed). Do a bit
more research and you'll find the whole nativity scene, virgin birth
etc., to be just some more nonsense.

This is completely wrong *or* you are talking to the wrong people.
Please read on below.

For the time being, rather than spending any money on fairly expensive
upgrades, I have just downloaded the OpenOffice.org
software suite which should do everything you
need. It is completely compatible with Word etc and you can even save in
those formats.

OpenOffice is free to download and free to use on as many computers as
you like in any context you like - business, personal, education etc.
Support is also free via this mail list which is run by users who
volunteer time to help other users. Documentation is also free via the
web site. You should always download the software from
www.openoffice.org where you will also find the documentation.

You can give it a try, at least, and if you don't get on with it buy the
Office 2007 Home version.

Don't buy OpenOffice. I think the thing you call "Office 2007 Home
version" is *Microsoft Office* which is very definitely not free; nor is
its documentation; nor is its support.

I will also shortly (30 days max) have to upgrade my antivirus software and
have decided to get the combined ZoneAlarm

Antivirus & Firewall software.

There is a perfectly good version of ZoneAlarm which is *free*. It only
does the firewall part of your security. For a good *free* anti virus
package, try AVG. I've been using both of those for years now on Windows
XP and they work very well.

I will be getting a licence for 3 PCs - the same price as two single
licences - as I need one for my laptop and one for my PC. Ian doesn't need
one (he has another year to run on his), so you can have the spare!

You don't need licences for any of the above.

User of older MS Office versions can use the Sun ODF plugin for ODF
support. Of course the best solution is to use OpenOffice.org or Star
Office.

Sun ODF Plugin:
http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin

I found the one article about how MS will implement ODF to be
interesting. They say they won't create proprietary extensions or
otherwise break ODF. We'll see how well they follow through.

I've never heard of OpenOffice working with Apple Works, though some
versions can open Microsoft Works files. You don't have to pay for
OpenOffice.org, as it is a free download from www.openoffice.org. So,
you'll have to contact whoever you paid or failing that try for a refund
through your credit card company. While it is legal for someone to sell
OpenOffice.org, I find those who provide nothing other than a download
to be unethical. Many of those "vendors" pass off this mail list as
their support. The help here is provided by volunteers, who try to help
other users and we are not paid for our efforts.

There is a lot of useful information available from www.openoffice.org
(click on the "Support" tab), which is the official site for OpenOffice.org.

That is not the OpenOffice.org site. It appears someone is trying to

I've not had a single crash w/3.0 or 3.0.1(dev)... yet, once I
reinstalled with a clean /opt. I _did_ experience crashes and other odd
bits when I first installed and failed to completely remove/purge my old
/opt dev installs. Perhaps I've been lucky as I have the following
installed on this machine (32bit Hardy) and they all work pretty well
for me so far:

(Ubuntu)OOo 2.4.1
OOo 2.4.2
OOo 3.0
OOo 3.0.1 (dev)
StarOffice 8/11 and SO 9 (beta)

Well... not perfect at all, as when I use the new Lotus Symphony (linux)
1.0.0, the same readme.lwp comes up perfectly. Formating is in place.
Graphics work. Bolding & coloring work, etc. etc. Big difference.

S you might want to see if you can tune Symphony so it is stable
on your system. I have it running on an Ubuntu Intrepid laptop with only
800Mhz/384MB of RAM in the machine and it's pretty stable there. I'm
installing on an WinXP to try the same - the XP is 2.4Ghz/512MB.

Those are the instructions I followed in order to install OOo 3.0,
leaving 2.4.1 installed as well. The dpkg command executed without
error, except that no launch entries were created. But those were easy
to create manually.

I think some of my problems are due to the fact that I have been
launching Writer directly without launching the splash screen first.

Other problems may be due to the fact that you cannot install the Gnome
desktop integration package unless you uninstall 2.4.1.

Lately I have been starting it with the splash screen first, then
Writer, but it still crashes hourly. When I restart it sometimes it
cannot even recover the document. That is, if I tell it to recover the
document it just crashes trying to recover it.

I'm beginning to see why Ubuntu creates an Ubuntuized version before
they put it in the repositories.

Okular's print dialog boxes are a mess. I just gave up on it
completely. I love Okular, but I won't use it for anything I am going
to have to print until there is a major upgrade to address the print
problems.

I also have Evince and Adobe Reader 8.1. Evince printed the troublesome
file perfectly. Adobe Reader printed random characters scattered on the
page like throwing a pinch of black pepper onto a sheet of paper. But
Adobe Reader did display the file perfectly. That is weird.

Eventually I found that Adobe Reader would print the file correctly if
I unchecked "Save Printer Memory." At this time I think the problem
lies in upgrades to CUPS that occurred when I upgraded Hardy to
Intrepid. In other words, the problem does not appear to be in OOo.

So I withdraw my question to the list.

2008-12-17 Thread Gillian Steedman
I have discovered that your Office XP Pro is an OEM (original equipment
manufacturer) package that is only available to companies who build
computers, such as your friends at Aber.ac

For the time being, rather than spending any money on fairly expensive
upgrades, I have just downloaded the OpenOffice.org
software suite which should do everything you
need. It is completely compatible with Word etc and you can even save in
those formats.

You can give it a try, at least, and if you don't get on with it buy the
Office 2007 Home version.

I will also shortly (30 days max) have to upgrade my antivirus software and
have decided to get the combined ZoneAlarm

Antivirus & Firewall software.

I will be getting a licence for 3 PCs - the same price as two single
licences - as I need one for my laptop and one for my PC. Ian doesn't need
one (he has another year to run on his), so you can have the spare!

As does the embedded README.LWP in the
ftp://ftp.lotus.com/pub/lotusweb/product/smartsuite/Kvlotus.exe
file. That one reads like:

Thanks! I also found one here:
ftp://ftp.lotus.com/pub/lotusweb/product/smartsuite/

and I can open that one just fine. The basic contents are along the
lines of:

Lotus Word Pro for OS/2 Warp 4 Release 1.5

This file contains important information that supplements the
printed documentation and online Help for Word Pro. Refer to the

installing and launching Word Pro. The SmartSuite README.TXT file
is located in the root directory of the SmartSuite CD-ROM, and in
the Lotus Assistance Center folder after you've installed
SmartSuite.

so that flavour works.

If you had any previous 3.x versions installed, purge before you install
the regular 3.0.

Let's start over to see if we can get you back on track. *Nothing below
will have any effect on your exisiting 2.4.1 installation.*

Uninstall 3.0.

Note: We'll backup your OOo 3.0 profile so that you can still use it
with the reinstall. However, if OOo 3.0 is still crashing afterwards,
then I'd delete ~/.openoffice.org2 and start with a fresh profile.

1. In Synaptic search for 'ooo'. Click the 'S' column header (S Package
Installed Version). That will bring the 'installed' packages to the top
(green boxes filled in). Click on the first 3.0 package (oobasis3.0...
is most likely), hold the Shift key down and scroll down to the last 3.0
package & click it. That will select all of the install 3.0 packages.
Right-click and "Mark for complete removal". Click Apply and when
finished exit Synaptic.

2. Open a terminal and backup your .openoffice.org files:

cp -r ~/.openoffice.org ~/x-.openoffice.org-x

[that makes a copy of your 2.4.1 profile]

cp -r ~/.openoffice.org2 ~/x-.openoffice.org2-x

[that makes a copy of your 3.0 profile]

gksu nautilus

[that opens nautilus in superuser mode]

3. In superuser mode of Nautilus, go to the /opt folder (File System)
and delete /opt/openoffice.org and /opt/openoffice.org3. Both of those
folders are for 3.0. If you have any other OOo folders (example:
/ooo-dev /ooo-dev3) delete those as well.

Exit the superuser mode of Nautilus.

4. Return to the terminal and cd to where the OOo 3.0 deb files are and
reinstall:

cd ~/jjj/Software/OOo/DEBS/
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now go to "2 Creating A Launcher" in
http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-openoffice-3.0.0-on-ubuntu-8.04
and create a simple menu launcher for OOo 3.0. Test.

Re: [users] stop automatic formatting

2008-12-17 Thread Brian Barker
Sorry: something - possibly a bullet character - truncated the first
version of this. Here (I hope) is a cleaned-up version.

At 23:13 16/12/2008 -0500, Helen Etters wrote:

The question: How, in OO writer, do I turn off automatic formatting?
The answer I've seen: Turn off the *Format->AutoFormat->While Typing*.

That's a good start.

... and turn off  *Tools->AutoCorrect*.

That's not a single option, of course, but many.

I've done this. But OO continues to try to format for me. It
thinks I am writing an outline when I am not.

Sorry, but I don't understand exactly what you mean here.

Or it thinks I am wanting a bulleted list when I do not.

If you start a line with a hyphen, a plus sign, or an asterisk,
followed by a space, a bulleted list is created when you press Enter
at the end of that paragraph. But that doesn't happen if you have
turned off Format | AutoFormat > | While Typing. Note that if you
already have a bulleted or numbered list and type Enter to create a
new paragraph within it or at its end, then Writer will add a new
item to your list even if you have While Typing disabled. You'd want
that - right?

If you want to leave AutoCorrect on for some things but to disable
the creation of bulleted and numbered lists, change the options Tools
| AutoCorrect... | Options | Apply numbering - symbol: * and Tools |
AutoCorrect... | Options | Replace bullets with: *.

One useful thing to remember is that when you type something and see
an automatic correction, Writer has done two things: the change you
want followed by the correction you don't. Since it sees these as
two separate operations, you can easily undo the correction but keep
what you do want by immediately using Edit | Undo (or Ctrl+Z).

It insists on indenting a paragraph, and I cannot convince OO that I
do not want this paragraph indented.

If you press Enter to create a new paragraph, Writer assumes that you
want the new paragraph to inherit the style of the previous
one. That's not unreasonable: it has to have some paragraph style,
after all. But you *can* convince Writer that you do not want
indentation. How you do this depends on exactly what you ant to
achieve. You could drag the triangular markers on the horizontal
ruler to where they need to be. Or you could make the changes - to a
paragraph - at Format | Paragraph... | Indents & Spacing (or
right-click | Paragraph... | Indents & Spacing) or - to the paragraph
style - at right-click | Edit Paragraph Style... | Indents &
Spacing. Or you could apply a different paragraph style, without the
indentation.

You don't say whether you see this behaviour in new documents or in
an existing one. If you are handling an existing document, remember
that you may have paragraph styles applied (either by you or by an
earlier editor of the document) that mandate the effects you are
claiming not to want. In this case, you will need to apply different
styles or to modify the existing ones.

Have you perhaps modified the default template? If the default
paragraph style has been modified here, you will see its consequences
in all new documents created with the default template, of course.

I do not want any formatting done for me. How can I completely
turn this off?

As I hope I've indicated, I think there is no single, simple answer
to this question!

I trust this helps.

Brian Barker

Thanks for the offer. I actually have Smartsuite installed, so I can open
the files, but am looking for a long term solution for the hundreds of files
that go back to Ami-Pro.

I keep hoping that something will be able to import those files in a

I saw a link to a batch converter for LWP in another thread, and that would
work for me, except when I downloaded the file, the script crashes Word Pro

Nope, not protected. No passwords have ever been used.

I tried Symphony, and it has more success at opening them, but is such a

it win any award?

In less than five minutes with it loaded, I had it crash twice and had to

[users] creating an IF statement to cover multiple columns during SUM

2008-12-17 Thread Wade Smart

20081217 1202 GMT-5

I have columns E,G,I,K,and M.
In each one there is a start time, a finish time and a sumed number.

Example:
e540 = 240
e541 = 11:12
e542 = 11:28
e543 = 00:16 -> elapsed time

g540 = 240
g541 = 11:42
g542 = 12:00
g543 = 00:18

and so on

Now I have another area like this:
g545 = 480 -> total running of g540
g546 = 00:34 -> total running of e543
g547 = this equals total time (g541 - m542 = total time)

So this is what I would like to do. Since not all five columns are used
every time I would like to have something that sums what is there.

For example: today only three columns were used so I would like to take
E541-I542 instead of E541-M542.

To me this sounds complicated using this spread sheet but, since I have
to do this 15 or so times a day I would like to have some code that can
help me out.

http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-openoffice-3.0.0-on-ubuntu-8.04

Note:

This guide shows how you can install the new OpenOffice 3.0.0 office
suite on your Ubuntu 8.04 desktop. Your current OpenOffice installation
will not be removed unless you uninstall it with Synaptic or on the
command line, so you can run both versions in parallel if you like.

Don't uninstall 2.4.1. After "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" skip directly to
"2 Creating A Launcher". The instructions before that are only if you
have uninstalled (U)OOo.

Note that there are 2 pages of instructions.

If you have issues with the IPA characters in the DejaVu fonts, I
suggest you email them. They are constantly updating them. See the
contact email addresso on their wiki page at
http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page .

When I wrote the document I did not mean to imply that one had to use
Junicode in order to create the brackets. Certainly any font will do.
It's just that if you are creating brackets for work in phonology your
brackets are going to need IPA characters.

As for embedding fonts into web pages I have a fairly dim understanding
of it. You can set a font in the tags for the document, but each user
can tell their browser to use a different font and to override the font
tags on a web page. For example I have a sight-impaired friend who sets
her browser to display fonts really large. I also know that there is a
list of core fonts that web designers use in order to maintain
compatibility. These core fonts are supposed to be installed on all
computers regardless of platform, so a web designer can ensure that the
viewer will see what the designer wanted by just sticking to the core
fonts.

There are the Microsoft Web core fonts which Microsoft at one time
offered for free on the web. The stopped this because Linux distros were
including automatic downloading in their installation, effectively
making these fonts default Linux fonts. However, while no one can compel
Microsoft to continue to provide them, the fonts remain free for any
user. They are available at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=34153 . Note that
these fonts are now old versions. Updated versions come with the
Microsoft and Macintosh operating systems. Some of these updated
versions contain a IPA characters.

They are not “supposed to be installed on all computer regardless of
platform”. I believe a number of Linux distros do include them, but
there is no regulation that they must be included.

Still, if you indicate in a web page that one of these fonts is to be
used, there is a good chance that it will be the font used on most
machines that view that web page.

Even so a user can override the settings in a page.

Yes.

Whether one can actually embed a font into a web page is a question
that is above my job level.

You can, but different browsers interpret different methods of
embedding. So generally, it is not considered advisable to embed fonts
on a HTML web page. Use PDF instead if you really want your document to
be fixed format, including fonts.

I do know that you cannot embed into a web
document a formula like the ones I use to create brackets. I know
because when I uploaded the index.html page to my web site the bracket
was an empty hole when viewed in a browser. I had to create the bracket
as a graphic and link the graphic to that place in the page.

Yes, though you can probably use mathml. Or, again, use PDF.

Well, it is good to see MS "working" on a promise they made in the spring.
In New York State (USA), our lawmakers stated some time ago that they
will be required to have all electronic documents stored/published in an
"Open File Format". With the economy crash, I wonder how long it will
now take. BUT, the commitment to move away from a MS document format
to an open format is encouraging for me.

Since many of the government agencies of the state has not converted over
to the MS Office 2007 package, and cannot use the service pack to read/write
the ODF files it is proposed to be able to do, I hope that the budget
crunch will
require the move to OpenOffice.org. The databases are still the
problem, but

most of the database use I have seen has been via a web browser format to
some central location. This does not involve the MS Access formats.

So it would be nice to see the move. Of course there is the SUN addon.
I have used it in the past on XP, and I may download it again for this Vista
install, but I hardly ever use MS and it is just as easy to read the
doc file

in OOo 3.x that have MS convert/export/save it in ODT.

Great job on the links Manfred.

[users] OpenOffice.org 3.0.0 doesn't let me input formulas the way I want…

2008-12-17 Thread Johnny Rosenberg
*What happens?*

This worked in 2.4.1:

Write this in a cell, for example in B1:

=SUM($A$1:A1)

Hit ↵ (Enter)

Go back to the cell and look at its formula. OpenOffice.org has changed the
formula, without asking me, to:

=SUM($A$1:$A$1)

This is ridiculous!

This works like expected, however:

=SUM($A$1:B1)

OpenOffice.org does not change this formula.

*What I want to do?*

I want one column that contains the "average fuel consumption so far" of the
values in other columns. "SUM($A$1:A1)" is only a part of the formula. The
real formula looks something like this:

=IF(OR(F1="";G1="");"";100*SUM($F$1:F1)/SUM($G$1:G1))

Column G contains by how much fuel I filled the car with in dm³ and the F
column contains how many km I drove since last time I filled it up
(resetting the trip meter every time).

When I copy that formula to the next row, it will look like this:

=IF(OR(F2="";G2="");"";100*SUM($F$1:F2)/SUM($G$1:G2))

which makes sense, doesn't it?

The first formula will, after I entered it, immediately be converted to:

=IF(OR(F1="";G1="");"";100*SUM($F$1:$F$1)/SUM($G$1:$G$1))

which is pretty useless.

*Is there a workaround?*

Yes, of course. Just enter the second row, then copy it to the first row.
Strang enough, now the first row isn't changed! It is now possible to copy
to any row, at least if the second row is the source.

*Why do I write this?*

I just thought I should see if someone happens to know if this is a bug or a
feature. What good could possibly come out of this behaviour? If no one can
tell me, I guess I'll send a bug report, if there isn't one already.

The OOo page called "Brackets.odt" uses the font of Junicode.

Here is the question.

The downloaded file states that the file's font is Junicode.
I do not have Junicode installed, but it is shown in the

Did the font somehow get embedded in the document or is the

The document states it is easier to use Junicode to do the work

bold text has trouble displaying the "n" character as well.

I was just wondering.

I would love to have an option to embed fonts in a document that was

Is your default document template set to letter or A4?
From the help file:

Modifying Default Templates
First, open either an existing OpenOffice.org template and modify it, or open a new document and
edit it as necessary to create the desired template.

(Format > Page > Page tab > Format drop down box choose A4.)- added by me

You can define a document template for each OpenOffice.org module. The following describes how to
proceed for text documents.

1.Save the document by choosing File - Templates - Save and saving the document in the My Templates
category.

2.Choose File - Templates - Organize.
3.Double-click My Templates in the list on the left. You will see the user-defined templates in the
user directory specified under Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org - Paths. Select the template you
have just saved and open the context menu or open the submenu of the Commands button.
4.Choose Set As Default Template. The next time you open a new text document, the new document will
be based on the new default template.

Go-oo is a No-Go for opening LWP files.

I saw this post and had hope for rescuing my years of LWP files and Go-oo

It will open the file, but it is incomprehensible and truncated. Either of
which is a deal killer.

Here is a business letter than I just opened:

That is it, that is all it opened. It will happily open the file, but
doesn't do much good.

Symphony isn't a solution for me. It is slow and buggy.

[users] Setting paper size with LC_PAPER does not work

2008-12-17 Thread Stephan Windmüller
Hello!

We have a problem on a system which runs Ubuntu 8.04 for many users. Our
default paper size is A4, not letter. But OpenOffice always sets the
paper size for a new document to letter.

I figured out that this has to do with the locale. With en_US.UTF-8 the
size is letter, with de_DE.UTF-8 the size is A4. Because we do not want
german menus the locale should stay on en_US.UTF-8. So I set LC_PAPER,
but that does not change anything. Here are the results:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=de_DE.UTF-8
-> letter

LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
-> A4

strace shows me that /usr/lib/locale/en_US.utf8/LC_PAPER is read. But
even replacing this file does not change the default format.

What can I try next? Did I understand LC_PAPER wrong or is this a bug in
OpenOffice?

TIA
 Stephan

[users] 3.0 in addition to 2.4.1 on Ubuntu

2008-12-17 Thread John Jason Jordan
I'm about to give up.

I have OOo 2.4.1 working fine in Ubuntu Intrepid x86_64. I have
installed 3.0 by downloading the tarball, extracting it
to /home/jjj/Software/OOo/, then doing "sudo dpkg -i /home/Software/OOo
*.deb." This installs all the packages except the one
in /home/Software/OOo/desktop-integration. I can't find the source
where I read it, but if you install the desktop integration .deb it
messes something up. Can't remember what.

OOo 3.0 runs fine except for the following:

1) I have to click to run OOo Writer (or any other module), nothing
happens, then I have to click it again to actually launch it.

2) Closing the document closes the entire application. This may be
because I only lauch the specific module (.e.g., Writer), not the main
splash screen. I do so because the splash screen is annoying and
useless. I use Writer almost always, and use the other modules one time
out of 500.

3) it crashes randomly.

4) I cannot install any extensions because clicking on Tools >
Extensions Manager crashes OOo.

Note that this is an additional install of 3.0. It is not an upgrade
replacing 2.4.1. OOo 2.4.1 is still installed, and I dare not uninstall
it considering the instability and bugs in 3.0.

I'd be happy to hear any suggestions.
