Re: ghosted iTunes music -- in a group
I apologise again for the delay in getting back to WAMUG to let you know how this matter was going. All is now sorted out satisfactorily - very strangely, after a recent iTunes update, my ghosting problems sorted themselves out in the Mac, iPhone and iPad. It is a bit hard to understand exactly what the update has done, but I spent some time yesterday running through each device to see what was still ghosted out, and it definitely has changed in some way. Sometimes now a song may be shown twice in a row, or duplicated, and one of these now appears as ghosted out. I did not give any directions to the Mac to do this. Now I can also see a lot of older music, sometimes music I have put on the Mac from my own CD's, has also been treated in the same way. I will not ask any questions, I am just happy that I did not need to do anything further, and that I can listen to all of the songs that I have input or bought! Thanks for all the advice, Peta On 17/01/2013, at 6:45 AM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Peta, Just to bring me 'up to speed', what your current situation is now with the Ghosted Tracks. You said below: On my Mac the ghosted songs are no longer ghosted, however they are still appearing ghosted out on my iPad and do not play. So all purchased tracks are showing and playing corrected in iTunes Library on your Mac. But 7 tracks are still showing ghosted and won't play on your iPad. 1. Plug your iPad into itunes. 2. When iTunes opens, go to your music library (thats where the ghostedsongs will play). Find the 7 songs that are ghosted (greyed out). 3. Right-Click (Control-Click) on a (ghosted) song and then click on Create AAC version. This makes a modified version of the song. 4. When the duplicate AAC is made, delete the original song (the one that wont play on your device). 5. Repeat with all your 7 greyed out songs, but make sure you are doing this in your music library. You will notice your duplicates added to your recently added playlist also. 6. When you are done duplicating the 7 songs ( deleting the 7 originals), go to your iPad via iTunes and Sync your music with your iTunes library music. 7. Once sync is completed, your greyed out songs should be no more and should play on your device. Let me know how you get on please. Re: Iphoto
Ken, I don't know if this will help you. I have had the same problem occasionally when making slideshows. This seems to occur if I have a large file, the system doesn't want to accept any more photos. What I have done is just start again, and the second time seems to work a bit better - when I do this I make the whole slideshow in one sitting though. (Obviously important to give the second slideshow a different name, and then to delete the first/incorrect slideshow when you have it all working). Hopefully this will help you, Peta On 01/03/2013, at 12:41 AM, Ken Jackson wrote: Hi folks, I am trying to do a Slideshow for my brother in laws funeral IPhoto crashes (ball of death) when I try to add anything to the Slideshopw folder. Hi Ronni Sorry, I have been busy with outside commitments and not using the Mac, so have not been reading emails or having time to spend in my office. Thank you for following through Ronni, I will give this a go over the weekend and hopefully get it all back to how it was and should be. I will definitely let you know. Aarghh! Sorry Ronni, I had already turned all off and have just come back into my office and seen your latest email. Yes, I did try your second solution before I turned the Mac off. In addition to having confused myself I guess my Mac and iPad are also now confused; I will shut the door and go away now. I will let you know, probably not today though, if there is any change. ghosted iTunes music -- in a group
Good morning I hope everyone is off to a good start for the New Year. I have a strange problem with my purchased music. This has been happening for about two months or so; not serious so I have not bothered about it particularly. At various times I purchase some music, and also some books, from iTunes. Sometimes, several songs in one hit, usually individual, and often quite varied in style and age. Mostly they appear in the normal way on my Mac, and also happily transfer themselves to my iPad, (and some of them send themselves off to my iPhone). However there is one batch of music that appears in my Purchased list that is ghosted out - on my Mac and my iPad. (Some of these songs do appear on my iPhone and others do not appear at all-rather strange but not mattering to me as I do not actually have my music set up to automatically appear on my iPhone. If I do want them I will do a separate sync from the big Mac at some time - it is just strange that some newly purchased songs appear on the phone whilst others do not). Is there any reason why about 6 individual purchases are ghosted - after that batch of songs, others purchased at later dates appear as normal and transfer as usual to the iPad. Yes, just purchased in the usual way, I did not do anything different. Hoping that someone has an answer! Thank you very much for this Susan. I don't actually have an iPad yet. I was going to stick with the Kindle as all I wanted was something simple just for reading, but.. My question is - when you take the iPad overseas, are there any unexpected horrible charges for using the iPad, such as with the iPhone? So if we were to download a book to read whilst we were overseas, would this be at a huge cost? Or if we send/receive emails? Or to look up something on the net? (Of course if someone was to use their iPhone overseas to play games, or if there are any automatic downloads or updates including the ones you have not requested, with the iPhone the cost would be huge). With the Kindle there is a button you can slide shut and remain off-line. Mainly this would preserve the battery life - with the way I use my Kindle there was nothing to automatically download, and I had ordered my books to read before leaving home. Also, I notice in your first email below, you mention that you look at your photos. Are you able to edit your photos direct from the iPad, and send/transfer that particular photo back to your Mac? Re: Kindle
Even before you buy a Kindle (which you do online, and once you have ordered it, it will arrive within one week) - go to amazon.com and have a look at what is available. Huge, huge range of books available. Type in one or two of your favourite authors and you will see your choice. Make sure before you click to order a book that you do choose the Kindle version of any book of course. Way, way in front of the iTunes books and not so frustrating as the iPad to order and for choice. However none of the shops that did carry any e-readers actually had anything set up on them that I could read, nor to play with. Frustrating. Fortunately I did know someone who had ordered one when they first became available in Australia, and he kindly brought his (smaller) one up for me to experiment with. Once I had sat down with it for 5 minutes I was positive that I wanted one, and that it definitely would suit me. If you can, arrange to hold one of each and see what you think. I personally do not find the bigger one any problem to hold nor to turn the pages. At the same time I think the smaller one would probably have also been suitable. It was my husband who kindly thought that maybe it would be better to go for the bigger size. We recently went overseas for a holiday and I happily read on the plane and in our room, by the pool, and also on the beach - my Kindle suited these needs very well. The size would probably come back to personal preference. The chap who brought his up to show me is completely satisfied with the smaller size. Re: Kindle
Good morning Ronni We won't talk about the Football! It was an exciting game though - I hope the champagne was really excellent. Last night I had thought of a question about the iPad, which you have probably answered in your first email, below. I suppose if nothing else the photo/s could be emailed to your Mac. Later today I will go onto the sites you have recommended to Severin and Susan. I did have that concern, but it has proved unfounded. On the iPad I also have a Borders app thar allows me to order books online and read them on the iPad. Having this flexibility means I can order books by current Australian authors as well. When the iBooks app finally has more than the free older books available it will give me three sources. With the kindle applications on my Mac, iPhone and iPad, I can have my current book synced on all three, and pick up reading with whichever device is available, but the iPad is the best of course in terms of size and portability. I have the apple case, and prop it in bed linen to read in bed, rather than holding it up - it would get a bit heavy I think. The iPad has a great screen for reading books, very clear and sharp, and the screen can be set to suit the lighting of the room you are in, so it's not glaring at night. So, I think either the kindle device or using the kindle app on an iPad is a great choice. Whilst we've been traveling, I've got books to read, tv shows to watch, a place to upload photos to the Internet, email, web surfing, and GPS, all on the one small device. Yes Severin I can answer positively. I have had my Kindle since March of this year (I did buy the bigger one, not really heavier than the smaller one). I am very pleased with it as I am an avid reader. Eventually there came the time when I could not fit any more books into the house! Re: Kindle
Hi Severin When I went looking for an e-reader, not many shops actually carried any. Of course I wanted to hold it in my hands to tell if it would suit me, one of the main reasons being of course to read in bed, on the bus, on my chair in the evenings - obviously the weight in my hand was going to be important. Like you I just wanted an outright reader, no toys, no internet, no games. Good luck Peta On 25/09/2010, at 11:28 PM, Severin Crisp wrote: Thanks for the feedback, Peta. Re: iPhone apps
Good morning all (what a gorgeous day) I was doing my morning read of the WAMUG questions, when this series of emails on iPhone Apps caught my attention. Only a theoretical question at the moment - well now that I think about it, three questions. We have more than 2 AppleMacs in the home, one iPhone and one iPad ( plus several iPods). Two household members each have their own completely separate iTune account and buy their own music of choice for their own Macs. Question One: If there are two iPads in the house, is it possible to buy Apps for two iPads from one account? Obviously the original iTunes account (set up many moons ago) was not initially set up for two of anything). Question Two: Was/is there a way to transfer the Apps from the iPhone to the iPad? (This may have happened automatically I can't follow through on that question within the household at the moment). Question Three: Is it possible that the Apps already purchased can be transferred from the existing iPad to a second iPad? I do of course know that iTunes music can be transferred from the AppleMacs onto the iPods and the iPhone, and that this also successfully transferred to the (one at the moment) iPad. epson stylus photo R310 Printer
Hullo all I have had my Epson Stylus Photo R310 Printer for several years (probably a few several years!) This printer was used mainly just for printing photos from my other PC (Microsoft stuff). When I bought my first Apple Mac we plugged the Epson into the Apple and this is the only printer I use with the Mac. This has worked fine for about 2 years, but now there is a deterioration in the quality of my photos; i.e. I ca now see horizontal lines across each photo (faint, light). Also, I don't think the colour is as sharp as it should be. I don't use the printer all that often, because we can take bulk photos to Officeworks etc, so usually I just use the Epson when I have a small number of photos which I want immediately. Plus general printing (which seems to be okay - I think, no need to print very often). I cannot find anything in WAMUG archives dealing with this problem specifically, and nor can I obtain any help from going online to Epson. Does anyone have any advice on how I can tell the Mac to clean the printhead or similar? I do hope it is not anything manual that I have to do. Keep the messy fingers for the computers nowadays please! Ronni - Many thanks for this. At least you are not stuck in traffic coming home from a mini-break somewhere! I have tried to follow your instructions - however when I click on Options Supplies Utility I can only choose from General : Driver or Supply Level. The option to click on either Clean Print Heads or Open Printer Utility then Head Cleaning is not there. I can remember that in the past when I try to check my various Ink Supply cartridges I have to go through several steps, which are not as I previously did when the printer was connected to my HP laptop, and it takes me a while to remember and work out how to establish my ink levels for each cartridge. So the main message in General is - Queue Name: Epson Stylus-R310. In Driver Version: 5.2.3 URL: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%2ODR3107 serial=MGP10403170313500. When I click on the Driver, this reads Print Using : Epson Stylus Photo R310-Gutenprint v523 To take full advantagecheck printers documentation. When I click on the tab Supply Levels the message is just Information Not Available. I am not sure if there is another way to approach this. Any suggestions very gratefully received! Very funny, I smiled. On 21/02/2010, at 4:58 PM, John Feltham wrote: -- Bill Gates In Heaven Bill Gates died and, much to everyone's surprise, went to Heaven. When he got there, he had to wait in the reception area, which was about the size of Massachusetts. There were millions of people living in tents. Food and water were being distributed from the backs of trucks, while staffers with clipboards slowly worked their way through the crowd. Bill lived in a tent for three weeks until, finally, a staffer in his late teens approached him. The young man was wearing a blue T-shirt with the words TEAM PETER emblazoned on it in large yellow letters. Hello, said the staffer in a bored voice. My name is Gabriel and I'll be your induction coordinator. Bill started to ask a question, but Gabriel interrupted him. No, I'm not the Archangel Gabriel. I'm a guy from Philadelphia named Gabriel who died in a car wreck at 17. Now give me your name, last name first, unless you were Chinese, in which case it's first name first. Gates, Bill. Gabriel started searching through the sheaf of papers on his clipboard, looking for Bill's Record of Earthly Works. What's going on here? asked Bill. Why are all these people here? Where's St. Peter? Where are the pearly gates? Gabriel ignored the questions until he located Bill's records. It says here that you were the president of a large software company. Is that right? Yes. Well do the math! When this St. Peter business started, it was easy. Only a hundred or so people died every day, and Peter could handle it by himself. But now there are over five billion people on earth. When God said to 'go forth and multiply,' he didn't say 'like rabbits!' Ten thousand people die every hour, over a quarter-million a day. Do you think Peter can meet them all personally? I guess not. You guess right. So he had to franchise the operation. Now, Peter is the CEO of Team Peter Enterprises, Inc. Franchisees like me handle the actual inductions. Gabriel looked though his paperwork some more and then continued. Your paperwork seems to be in order. And with a background like yours, you'll be getting a plum job assignment. Job assignment? Of course. Did you expect to spend eternity sitting on your bum and drinking ambrosia? Heaven is a big operation. You have to pull your weight around here! Gabriel took out a triplicate form, had Bill sign at the bottom, and then tore out the middle copy and handed it to Bill. Take this down to induction center no. 23 and meet up with your occupational coordinator. His name is Abraham--and no, he's not that Abraham. Bill walked to induction center no. 23 and met with Abraham after a mere six-hour wait. Heaven is centuries behind in building its data-processing infrastructure, explained Abraham. As you've seen, we're still doing everything on paper. It takes us a week just to process new entries. Your job will be to supervise Heaven's new data processing center. We're building the largest computing facility in creation. Half a million computers connected by a multisegment fiber-optic network, all running into a back-end server network with a thousand CPUs on a gigabit channel. Fault tolerant, distributed processing, the works. Bill could barely contain his excitement. Wow! What a great job! This is really Heaven! We're just finishing construction, and we'll be starting operations soon. Would you like to go see the center now? You bet! Abraham and Bill caught the shuttle bus and went to Heaven's new data processing center. It was a truly huge facility, a hundred times bigger than the Astrodome. Workers were crawling all over the place, getting the miles of fiber optic cables properly installed. But the center was dominated by the computers. Half a million computers, arranged nearly row-by-row, half a million... Macintoshes. .. all running Apple software! Not a PC in sight! Not a single byte of Microsoft code! The thought of spending eternity using products he had spent his whole life working to destroy was too much for Bill. What about PCs??? he exclaimed. What about Windows??? Excel??? Word??? You're forgetting something, said Abraham. What's that? asked Bill plaintively. This is Heaven, explained Abraham. If you want to build a data processing center based on PCs running Windows, then you'll have to go elsewhere! __._,_.___ ooroo -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe -

Ronni Hooray! Thank you so much - I have been hoping for something like this for quite a while! Sometimes when our various questions are asked (definitely including mine) on a specific subject, and there are many responses with more queries popping up over the months from other people, I have wished for a volunteer to gather up all of the information and place it into logical steps so even the basic beginner - and those who do know a lot - can just follow simple steps. This is an easy way to be able to show clients (if you are a Professional Photographer), or family friends, a DVD of photos you have taken for them. They can insert the DVD in a standard DVD player connected to a TV and it will immediately play for them to watch and enjoy. You can of course create much more professional DVDs with great looking Themes and Menus Customising in iDVD. I especially like, and use a lot, 'Revolution' Theme, 'Reflection White'Theme 'Memories' Theme. Among projects I do, I have filmed a few Weddings, and edited them in iMovie HD ( trying to find time to learn Final Cut Express 4), and produced the DVDs in iDVD using the 'Wedding White Theme', with rolling credits at the end with every guest included in the credits. They have all turned out beautifully. I give copies of the DVD to the couple and their parents. They all love and cherish the DVD of their Weddings. I keep Disc Images of all the projects I do, so I am always able to burn another copy for people. When I can find some time, I perhaps will do more 'How To' tutorials. The PDF is named CREATING A SLIDESHOW IN iPHOTO 8 OneStep DVD in iDVD 7, and I have uploaded it to my website. Help. Thank you Ronni for your prompt reply. I followed your steps carefully and unlocked the padlock. Unfortunately iPhoto still does not open, and I receive the same message Caution - the iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have permission to make changes to it. No-one except me goes into these files. I transferred all information etc painlessly from my earlier Mac 10.6.2 about a month ago, and have had no problems since. I have edited photos, made slideshow etc. in the usual way. My version of iPhotos shows as V.8.1.1. I always carry out updates when prompted. Thanking you for your efforts. Ronni Again, many thanks. I will go ahead and buy this. I don't think (at this stage anyway) that Relative Hyperlinks and Bookmarks will effect me much, so I should be fine for how I am using my Mac. (Of course the law of averages being what they are, one week after I buy iWorks 09 and install it, someone will show me some fantastic ways to use these). Oh well, I know where to go to ask for help! Hi Peta, I have used all versions of iWork and find each version has improved (as also iLife versions have). I use iWork a lot for my projects, especially Pages. I use Pages'09 to write Technical eBooks, but still find I use Adobe Acrobat Professional v8.0 to do my Bookmarks that link to certain sections on a page. Pages does let you create Bookmark 'links' to other pages, but I have not been able to get Pages'09 to 'link' to sections (subheadings) on the same page. I know you are supposed to be able to, but as yet I haven't found 'the way' to do exactly what I require ;-) Also Pages does NOT support Relative Hyperlinks, it turns all Relative Hyperlinks into Absolute Hyperlinks (therefore placing a http in front of Relative Hyperlinks, changing them to URL's). Pages'09 only supports 'Absolute' links (URL's) This would not concern most people, but when I wrote What to do if you loose your Broadband Internet Connection, I needed to create a PDF with Relative Hyperlinks to Mac Help Viewer articles, Pages could not do this, I had to use other applications. In Text Edit all the links work 'Absolute' 'Relative' ... until you export to PDF or use the Print Save as PDF. But yes, I would recommend iWork'09. Taken from CNET Reviews-The Interface tweaks make commonly used features more accessible. Flashy, eye-catching presentations are even easier to make. iWork apps play well together with added interoperability across the suite. http://www.apple.com/iwork/ The iWork Tutorials are a good place to start learning how to use each application. http://www.apple.com/iwork/tutorials/#pages Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz / 4GB / 800MHz / 500GB OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: iPhoto
Graeme As Paul has said, I am sure you will find that your photos will be in Photos and also in Events. Originally, nearly 2 years ago, I also was not happy with the way in which iPhoto sorted out my photos, and I battled (am battling) on in various ways to try and force iPhoto to put my photos where I wanted, and as I had them originally placed on my PC. Having actually lost photos right off the system (because I was trying to cut and paste as I had done on my PC) I had to accept and give in, still trying to adapt to the way the Mac handles photos. This date order that iPhoto works on is actually a nuisance to me because many of my photos have been taken from old slides; or having been scanned in from an old/new photo. iPhoto recognises the dates of these photos as the date they actually are placed into iPhotos., so old-by-date photos, when imported into an existing folder, place themselves up with the most recent-in-date photos. (No problems with dates with digital cameras). Two things that I have found of great help. One, is to work from Events, then you can place these - by dragging the folders - in the order you want them. You can also merge one folder into another when you want to, by dragging one file onto the top of another folder. EG, I have Christmas 1979, Christmas 1980, Christmas 1981; Holidays 1999, Holidays 2000; Birthdays 2000, Birthdays 2001 and so on. If I come across more Christmas 1979 photos I import these and then go into Events and add to/merge my earlier file. So each section in Events is in the order and date order that suits me. The second thing I have done (I have gone over every photo, nearly 10,000, gradually and done this, - now I do it each time I place photos by whatever method into iPhoto) - is to rename each photo. This helps greatly in the excellent search function in iPhoto. (**I have also renamed, where I think it appropriate) each file name. So within Family Tree Smith file (bearing in mind some of my photos areninserted from slides, or which I have scanned in) have been renamed so each individual photo reads, EG Smith F.T. Pemberton Pool, Denis, Janet 1940's. Then I can search by Smith or by Pemberton, or by Denis, and up come my photos. It is always better to give a time frame whenever you can to save problems later, EG much better when possible to firstly show 2009-09-11; or even Sept. 2009. With really old photos I try to put at least, 1940 ish. Sometimes I have photos given to me by another person and these may have been put onto a USB stick. Then it is important to also retain the same name that your source has given to them - EG Smith F.T. Farm, Mum, Gran 1950 ft ks 115619. Partially meaningless to us, but important if we need to ask our source any questions about that particular photo at a later date. Hopefully this also will help you a little. Have fun Peta On 21/12/2009, at 10:29 PM, Paul van der Mey wrote: Graeme My experience with iPhoto is that all the images appear in Photos AND Events. The difference being that Events groups the photos by time (the default on import?, Go to iPhoto - Preferences - Events to see the other options) Go to the events view and slowly drag across one of the images. You should see a slide show of the images in that Event. Double click to view the images in the Event. You should find all Events are groups of images taken on the same day. It is possible to turn the auto-splitting on import function off when importing from the finder (a check box in the Event Preferences) in which case you would see events as folder names that have been imported. Hullo Ronni I have been stewing on your reply to my query on October 26, and Eugene's later reply to my query re reverting to original situations. I have experimented with this successfully; however, your comment about Moving things, renaming things has been bothering me. When I receive photos to place into iPhoto they come from various sources, i.e. someone may email them to me, or they come from a USB stick, or they may be scanned in. Some of these photos are very old and there is no clue as to the true date the photo was taken. The Mac of course gives them the date that they were placed into iPhoto (not of course photos from a digital camera where we can always obtain the true date). Sometimes I wish to place these photos into a relevant Family Tree folder, or e.g., 2008 Christmas folder. Then, in order to use the excellent Search button in iPhoto I like to show the names of the people in the photo. Some photos just show Img 24 and have not been named, obviously originally from a digital camera, or scanner. Sometimes the person who has given me the photos has their own code for naming photos. Sorry, I am rambling on - now, when I receive a photo as a single or as a group, I re-name each photo with a code which is meaningful to me, e.g. Family Tree Smith 1931-ish Mum, Dad, Gran. Then of course that or those photos are placed into the Family Tree Smith folder. Therefore, I assume that I have interfered with the original and it may not be able to be reverted, whether or not I have actually modified the actual photo? copy slide shows to DVD or USB
Hi In the days before I acquired my AppleMac, I had quite a few different slide-show projects on my PC using PowerPoint. I have these copied onto my Mac and have done some work on them using the package I bought with my Mac - (very much a project for when time allows). So all of these slideshows consisting of a great amount of time and effort have been put aside for now. However, since I have had my Mac, I have become used to quickly making great slideshows with very little effort using iPhoto. These slideshows are really quite good, and of course there are several options to use as to which format to view the photos in, the length of time for each picture, and also which music to add and so on - really simple and really quite effective. It suddenly occurred to me - is there a way that I can save these quick slideshows onto a disc and play and view them using a DVD player direct to the television, (or another computer), or to give someone a disc of e.g. a child's birthday party? Hopefully this will be possible. Re: copy slide shows to DVD or USB
Thanks for this information Ronni and also John I had tried something similar a few days ago, but obviously it is not going to be as easy as just copying/exporting my existing slideshow(s) onto a disc. I tried doing the steps only as John suggested, but nothing transferred onto the disc (I really suspected this would be the case but worth a try for a shortcut). So I had been taken into another step/program for further editing etc when I was hoping that that was all I had to do. Later, maybe not today, I will follow Ronni's steps and will let you all know when I have success. Obviously I need to make the time to learn more about iDVD/QuickTime. I am so looking forward to the finished product! Have a good day, Peta On 19/08/2009, at 4:23 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Peta, A couple of tips. Also I have iWork '08. QuickTime Player 7.6.2. Probably other Applications etc. which I have not used, and maybe some of which need updates! My Mac is : Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I carry out my Updates when the Mac asks me to. There is not going to be any quick short-cut for me regarding copying my slide shows! Do you recommend Toast as being more user friendly than iDVD? (I am very friendly although obviously alarmingly not at all knowledgeable)! Unfortunately I will be tied up for a few more weeks with other stuff, but I will definitely be appealing for help again as soon as I can get back to this. Thank you so much Ronni - I'll be back. You need to understand Video Formats. http://gizmodo.com/5093670/giz-explains-every-video-format-you-need-to-know To achieve what you want, you need to use an Authoring Software (such as iDVD or Toast) which will create a DVD by adding a Menu (all DVD's must have a Menu), and convert the Video to MPEG-2 format (DVDs use MPEG-2 video format). iMovie is Editing software iPhoto is a photo manager that offers light yet powerful photo-editing tools software, iDVD is Authoring software. You need to let people know what versions of iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD you are using as different versions do things slightly differently. So for us to give you help we need this information. If you are using iLife'09 - iDVD version 7.0.4 you need to set the preferences in iDVD to Projects: PAL, Encoding - Professional Quality Turn on Show TV Safe Area from View Menu, so you can see exactly what will show on TV you can place your Titles to fit inside the TV safe area. A good place to start is Apple Support pages. http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/ Video Tutorials http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd When you get the project in iDVD as you want it and it previews satisfactorily, a good idea is to use the File-Save as Disk Image menu option. Then open the disk image on the desktop and launch DVD Player to play the project. If the disk image plays OK with DVD Player then the encoding was good and you can burn the disk image to disk using Disk Utility or Toast. This will save you from making bad discs or coasters as they are called. Always use good quality DVD-R Media Discs. I find Verbatim Inkjet Printable DVD-R (SL) DVD+R (DL) most compatible with DVD Players and I burn at 4x 2x This should at least get you started on your way to producing some great DVDs. strange set up for my wamug mail
Hi I have just decided to check to see if I had any WAMUG mail. Somehow, over the past few hours, my settings have changed themselves (?) Does anyone know how I can reinstate the settings as they were previously - i.e. so that if I click on Ronda Brown, her message appears on the bottom 1/2 of the screen? Then so on with any other name I click on. All I have is the total list of names: FROM SUBJECT DATE RECEIVED TIME This is all messages from today back to when I first began receiving mail from WAMUG (except obviously for the ones I have deleted). Where have the actual messages gone? If I double click on the person's name the message will appear in a formal set up. Has this happened to just me? Probably so basic and simple I will be mortified. Thank you Pedro, Ronni and Susan for your prompt replies. I have passed the info on to my husband and hopefully he can go ahead with this. Re: Faces IPhoto 09
Hullo Ronni I also have thousands of photos and have been a bit frustrated in the way in which iPhoto argues with me constantly and puts my photos in the order in which this mere machine thinks is correct. I have battled on, become accustomed to, won a few/lost a few arguments, and was pleased when I saw your reply to Peter. Thank you for another idea that I have now used, and which works. (Some time ago I also used your Batch Change/Rename tip, this was very useful to me). So - I have been experimenting with your method and as I said above, it does work; however I did not find it a lot quicker than typing in for a general search of, e.g. Charlie ,than in creating an Events- based album. Does anyone know of a way in which we can isolate every photo of e.g. Charlie, Jack, etc instead of receiving the whole of the file in which these people occur? Thereby having sometimes a very large file(s) of photos to sort through in which Jack may appear only once. For example, sometimes I work with my various quite large Family Tree type files, and at times I would just like every photo I have of a particular person. In my battles with iPhoto, I have learnt to give the file I am downloading from my camera or from a USB stick a meaningful date and name. Sometimes I am working from very old scanned photos and iPhoto places these where it decides to, generally choosing from the date the photos were downloaded onto it, or the scanning date. Even when I change a date under each actual photo, and make sure the individual name of various photos shows the names of the individuals within that particular photo, I cannot make iPhoto comply with the way I envisage my file. Muddling along with this I accidentally discovered how to merge new photo files additions by going into Events, to join up or separate various batches of photos. This is useful and good. Of course we can drag each folder within Events into the order and grouping we like. So I have all my Family Trees with their sub-division type of name in the order I like; the same with Christmas 2001, 2002, Holiday at ...,. in 2004 and so on. However, I cannot drag and insert the files within Photos in the order that suits me, or as I can do in Events. In fact early 2008 when I received my Apple Mac I lost quite a few photo files thinking I was cutting and pasting, as with the other PC's. Where did they go? Grrr. Any ideas to overcome iPhotos stubborn approach would be very much appreciated. What else am I going to worry about on this rainy dreary day? Peta On 12/07/2009, at 4:41 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hello Peter, You could Create Events-based iPhoto albums featuring specific people. 1. Use drag-select to select all the “known” faces for that person, and then click on Events in the Library section of the iPhoto sidebar. 3. When you click back into Events, you’ll see that any events containing the faces you selected are now highlighted. 4. Click the Plus sign to create a new album, and make sure that the “Use selected items in a new album” option is checked in the dialogue that appears. 5. Type in a name for your new album, click Create, and you’re done— the new album will contain every event in which the selected person’s image appears at least once. Re: 35 mm slides/Digital images
Stuart Speaking from my own (very novice) experience and having faced this same problem a few years ago, I found the only answer (well the cheapest) is to buy a very good Epson scanner which will handle slides and prints, and allocate yourself hours and hours each week to manually scan these in a few at a time. It is very expensive to pay someone professional to do this for you. Maybe you could offer to pay a high school student. This is a very boring task. I made a few executive choices along the way as to which photos and slides really were important to me, and just got stuck into it. Realisation came only recently - I will not in my lifetime be able to make the time to scan everything I have. Good luck! Re: Renumber digital photos
Hullo Stephen Okay, I was really happy to read that we can change/rename multiple photos at the same time (as I can and do successfully carry out on my HP PC). So today I transferred from our cameras the photos from a recent holiday. I successfully put these firstly into date order, and then tried to do as suggested by you and (I think Adrian Skehan - i.e. Photo/Batch Change.) This gave me a description to type in with the comment append to existing I have done this 4 times and my Apple says updating photos - however there is no change in my iphoto file, and they are still named only by the numbers allocated from the camera. Where have these one, what has actually happened? What I thought I could do, (as with my HP), is to rename them something like 2009 Bali Holiday and the Apple would number each of those as 2009 Bali Holiday (1); (2); (3);etc. Then, what I have been doing on the HP is manually further adding where relevant, e.g. pool, my name, husband's name, friend's name and so on after the (1) number, to assist in any future searches. Hi Ronda Thank you so much - absolutely what I wanted. The step I was missing was in Description, I had not noticed the options there - so of course I chose Title and now all is just as I wanted. Also I can add a further relevant key word - i.e. - name of person or place individually to any photo to help find a particular photo quickly. Excellent. Have a good day. Fwd: iPhoto Issue
Hullo David Thank you for replying - and thanks to everyone else who has been trying to help with my iPhoto problem. I have tried various suggestions from WAMUG and also some given to me off-line, however with no luck. I work with my iPhotos a lot, nearly every day - this is my passion - so if I lost my thousands and thousands of photos it would be a disaster for me. To those who have recommended that I find someone to come and look at the Apple, I think that it is best I now do this. I am starting already to have difficulty remembering what steps I have taken to rectify the problem, so I think it is time to call a halt. Maybe the Apple help-line may be able to talk me over a solution on Monday morning, but maybe not. Incidentally, I think the iPhoto Library was under my name, which was next to a home emblem, so perhaps something strange happened when I was first set up early this year with my (first) Apple. My Apple details are as follows: Mac OSX v.10.5.5 Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM *Startup Disc - Information for this is not under the Apple emblem, with the above info. I live in Kalamunda - I can see that you seem to be in Manjimup David! Do you know of anyone who lives up this way? Does anyone know of an Apple expert who lives near to Kalamunda? Any names/phone no's. would be appreciated. Many thanks - what a lot of frustration this rainy Saturday. Again, thank you to everyone who responded. Re: Problem Solved: iPhoto Issue
Thanks for this Ronni Yes, I had plugged in my Maxtor external hard drive (which I had been using with my Toshiba notebook and which was set to automatically back up every 24 hours) when I bought my Apple earlier this year. I unplugged the Maxtor a while ago because I don't think it was that happy to work with the Apple. So on my list of things to buy was an external hard drive for the Apple. These were really expensive at that time, so it was put onto hold. I note they have been coming down in price more and more recently. Any recommendations of brand/size or other thoughts? *Incidentally, I did not discover and solve the (various) problems with iPhoto by myself - I had a very patient and helpful off-line helper, during nearly the whole of Saturday. So much appreciated - there was no way that I could have solved this by myself! Re: iphoto dropped off dock
Hi Ronni Thank you so much for replying. Sadly we still do not have Lift Off! I opened Macintosh HD - yes - iPhotos wording shows there. I went through Finder and opened Applications. iMovie is there. iPhoto Library is there (the one which you suggest I drag to Trash). Nothing called iPhoto application is there, only the iPhoto Library. However, using the Finder, Places, under my own name/file is an iPhoto Library, (and also the iPhoto alias which I made yesterday which I would imagine I also drag into Trash). Possibly the files which should show under Applications are somehow under my name? I had found this last night and I had opened iPhoto Library and ticked Create Library. This was obviously the wrong thing to do because now I cannot find any photos. (N.B. Ronni please do not tell me that I have somehow deleted my photos). So - just now I followed the same step you recommended, and this time I chose Choose Library. This step took me back to Applications (no picture file here). So I clicked on my name/file again, just above the application file. This eventually took me to Pictures. I clicked this and then up came an iChat icon. My photos did not appear. Are there any more steps I can follow? Thanks Ronni Peta On 20/12/2008, at 9:48 AM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hello Peta, When you drag the iPhoto Application (from your Applications) to the Dock, don't drop it on the dock until a space appears, then drop the iPhoto Application. Preview Application is for viewing PDF's, images etc. There should NOT be a iPhoto Library in your Applications folder, only the iPhoto Application should be in Applications. Drag the iPhoto Library that is in Applications to the Trash. Your iPhoto Library is in your HD / Users / Pictures folder DON'T move or touch any files in this folder. iPhoto likes everything in it's correct place. Open iPhoto Application. Hello Peta, The only way to play more than one music track completely and in succession is to create a soundfile or playlist of the music tracks off-line (for example in Garage Band or iTunes) and then import this soundfile as the Soundtrack for the slideshow. You can do this in the Inspector Document Audio Soundtrack menu. This will play as the slideshow progresses and changes slides. The Soundtrack will begin playing together with the first slide of your slideshow and continue until the end of the audio. To get all of the Builds and Transitions in your slides to synchronise with the audio track, you will need to Record the track, which also can be done from this same window. Also, remember that if you do have a Soundtrack, you need to remove any individual audio tracks you may have imported into any slides. Otherwise, they will play simultaneously when the slide comes up.
