I have just done a fresh install of Arch following the installation guide on
the archwiki. I cannot hear any sound through my onboard laptop speakers.
The details of my computer model, the kernels I have loaded, and other config

When fedora 18 updated to 3.8.1, my S/PDIF optical
output ceased to function. On the previous 3.7.9
kernel it works fine.

I got a GeForce GT 430 card which happens to have HDMI
output. Since the nouveau drivers only worked in 2D on
this card (and not very well at that), I installed the

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series card in my Dell
Zino HD, I can get audio out the HDMI port, but if
I use the open source xorg-x11-drv-ati driver I get
no audio.

device is using snd-hda-intel

but nothing has worked so far. Tried all the different snd-hda-intel
module options with no success.

turning off mmap mode in the second tab of the alsa configuration dialog.
BTW, when you type dmesg on a command line, do you see anything relating to

so, im on debian sid, kernel 2.6.0. my soundcard details are given below in the lsoci
o/p (its a sis7012). i got the latest stable releases of the alsa driver,
d when making loud noises in Unreal Tournament 2003.

Welp, I solved my problem by going back to 0.9.0rc6, which I determined
was the version I had working before (never delete anything is my
motto). It worked first time after a dead-stock installation. It also
works simultaneously with linmodem HSF drivers, so it wasn't any

and working with xmms 1.2.7-1. Recently, I had to recompile my
kernel to include PPP support I'd left out (duh), so I obtained
ALSA 0.9.5.
There seems to be a problem talking to the PCM hardware

and if the buffer runs out before it is refilled (which is requested by
interupt) then you get skipping/distortion/slow
