There's a Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs gold CD version of Bridge Of Sighs

rare and out of print, and I've never heard it, so I don't know how it
compares to other masterings of the album. Anybody heard it?

the former has remote control. If you don't need an analog
input, such as for a tuner, the DAC1 USB will save you a chunk of money
and sound just as good. All of those models have slightly improved
opamps and circuits compared to the original DAC1.

The difference you're hearing could be due to higher gain in the op amp
section of the DAC compared to the op amp in the Squeezebox. If you do
the same test with the analog and digital outputs from a CD player, do
you hear the same difference?

Cambridge DacMagic came frighteningly close for a product at 1/4 the
price. If I hadn't had the Benchmark unit there for direct comparison,
I probably would have been quite satisfied with the DacMagic sound.

Note that the Cambridge DacMagic is powered by 12 volt AC, not DC. The
Little Pinkie supply mentioned earlier in this thread is 12V AC, but

P.S. If you can get AccurateRIP working, there's no reason not to use

CD player. Even if the bits are the same, perhaps the FLAC-sourced
digital output has extra jitter that this particular DAC can't handle.
(It's not exactly a high end DAC.)
