By default, when you plug a Sniffer into a switch you will only see
broadcast traffic for the VLAN that the physical port you are plugged into
is a member of. You are however able to "span" ports or VLANs. That is,
you are able to "span" an entire VLAN or individual ports
Keep in mind that a VLAN is just a broadcast domain. With a packet capture tool, you
capture whatever traffic happens to pop out the port your connected to. Connected
directly to a layer 2 switch (bridge) you will see all the broadcast/multicast traffic
in the VLAN.

Right and wrong.
The IS VLAN is its own broadcast domain and the HR VLAN is its own broadcast

Hi All - I am implementing "routing on a stick" with the Cisco router.
However, we have couple 3com switches on the network. I wonder if the
Vbridge on 3Com is compatiable with the VLAN setting/encapsulations on the

I just want to thank those who provided insight to the problem I was
experiencing with Firewall access through VLAN's. When I tried to add an
iside route statement as suggested, the firewall didn't take it. I looked at
the version code and noticed it was 4.4(4)!! Yikes! Needles to say, an
upgrade
Update:
I know that the Firewall does not know that the 10.25.192.0 /19 exists. I
tried to put in a route statement on the pix but it would not accept it.
This was the command: "route inside 10.25.192.0 255.255.224.0 10.25.223.2 1"
When I put in a route to the secondary Address of
PIX probably doesn't know how to get to the other VLAN. What are your
route statements in the PIX?

VLAN routing is not a technology. In fact, the two terms are completely unrelated. A
VLAN is simply a broadcast domain that is not specifically bounded by physical

Hi all,
I finally managed to conquer MLS and VLANs, and I wanted to thank everyone
for their help.
I ended up completely nuking the config on the Cat and started over.
The new config worked from the very beginning. I suppose that there was
something lurking in the old config on the Cat that wa
Don't worry about it. Only the VLAN interface that is the current
management interface will show as UP, the rest will show as DOWN. This is
normal and will not affect the operation of the device. Unlike a router,
the switch does not need an active VLAN interface per VLAN to operate.

Hi all,
I just purchased a Cat 2900XL for my CCNP lab and am having some problems
with it. I configured a VLAN, let's call it VLAN 60. I assigned some ports
to VLAN 60.
I did a no shutdown on int vlan 60 and when I do a show int it still shows
it as admin down. I check the config and it

The default gateway for a host has to be in the same subnet as the host. So,
for the 2.x PCs, default gateway is 10.10.2.1, and for 3.x PCs, 10.10.3.1.

10.10.2.1 and 10.10.3.1 respectively. Got to be within its own subnet.

I have a question concerning the default gateway for PCs when connecting to
a 3548XL switch that has VLANs. I have a 3548XL switch that has 3 VLANs
(VLAN1 is for the 10.10.1.x subnet, VLAN2 is for the 10.10.2.x, and VLAN3 is
for subnet 10.10.3.x) configured. The 3640 router has an address of
