[newbie] trackball and touchpad

Anyone tell me how to get them both working together? Trackball works fine, touchpad not at all in mandrake, fine in windows xp. I have searched the web and changed my xf86config enough to stop x working but not to start the touchpad with x running. I am confused and tired. All help
