I visited Jones Beach West End this morning and had several GC-kinglets and
Yellow-Rumped warblers by the Coast Guard station and 1 Brown Creeper.
Overhead big numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds and Northern Flickers were
moving in addition to 40 + Sharp-shinned Hawks. An American Kestrel and

Land birding was slow except for the always present Yellow-rumped Warblers..
The interest, for me, was on the bar in front of the marina. Here there were
some hundreds of shorebirds to look through:--~125 Black-bellied Plover; 1
Golden Plover, several passes

As an addendum, Barb Saunders and I found a Lapland Longspur in the

Sam Jannazzo and I started birding at the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station
and walked to the turnaround and back. Along the way we saw three warbler

Yesterday I visited the West End of Jones Beach between 6:30 and 7. I saw a
good number of black skimmers on the sand bar near the coast guard station
and a few merlins flying around. The highlight was a buff-breasted
sandpiper in the median of the exit at the ocean parking lot.
After leaving
I was at West End 2 yesterday around 1:00PM and saw (1) Baird's
Sandpiper and (1) Buff-Breasted sandpiper on the edge of the swale
(closest to the ocean).
The day before, on Wednesday there was one tern, a Caspian Tern among a
small group of GBB gulls in the swale. It stayed for a short time

A total of 7 Harlequin Ducks (including 3 drakes) were present at the West End
2 jetty this afternoon (4/15). Not much else of note in the dunes except for a
singing Swamp Sparrow and a Barn Swallow among the many Trees.

We went today (early afternoon) to Jones Bech and we saw the Longspur (about
1-2PM) with the group of Horned Larks in the area next to the parking to the
right before the main entrance to the Cost Guard Station. There were several
birders and a bird photographer.

Stopped at the CG station where we saw 20-30 Horned larks on the
"Longspur" field adjacent to the parking lot. Didn't see any Longspurs
this time though. The group of BH cowbirds was still there also.

This morning an adult *Razorbill* was present in Jones Inlet as viewed from
the WE2 Coast Guard Basin, perhpas part of the recent alcid incursion. Also
of interest, especially in recent years, was a male American Kestrel perched
in a large deciduous tree immediately south of the turnaround. At

I just have to comment how stunning these photos are.
I agree that it may be hard to tell how large the bird is, (and
believe me, I'm NO expert) but when put up against the size of a
herring gull (particularly when it is flying off with the gull) seems
to put it in the Gyr league.

tanager (around 10AM?) this morning by the hedgrerow at the Coast Guard Station
at Jones Beach West End. From Sam's description it was probably a male. There
was also a report of a Connecticut Warbler, not seen by

Jamaica Bay East Pond (Queens Co.) in the rain today. There was a large

Combined with the dune lagoons created by Bill made for excellent birding.

After the weekend activities, the island in front of the marina was free of
boaters, sunbathers and campers. There were 11 species of shorebirds including
100 American Oystercatchers (I counted 104); 50+Black-bellied Plover; 20 Red
