Hi Gus,
I would definitely trust the Sound Devices, particularly the 788 series
for work in rugged conditions
The Zylia would need its dedicated recorder, otherwise you have to
use a laptop (it connects with USB). It’s definitely an interesting mic
but in terms of audio quality you can’t compare
I agree with Gus, some kind of amplitude panning would work best.
you might need to adjust the panning curves depending on the directivity of
the speakers, their height and the acoustics of the room.
I made a sculpture once with two crossed (almost) bidirectional loudspeakers
hanging high
these days
they’re used more for online conference calls ;-)

how would they create beams with only seven speakers? magik!

Wow, thanks for posting this Richard,
if it runs on Android and IOS too, it could be the basis of a locative

You can always record an omni along with
your MS mic and get horizontal B-format!
only, of course, if you are using 2x figure-of-8 mics,
or a double MS set up. I was a bit quick with the send button there.

Geo,
I was there last week too, but i was disappointed with the piece. But
then maybe I am super-critical...
I thought that the recordings of the movement of people through the
woods (soundfield mic??) worked very well
but that the other things sounded panned - as if they were emerging
of whatever noises, vibrations or explosions they have
recorded.
