No the installer doesn't have an option to install any search engines. I
have had problems in the past with virus scanners giving false positives on
the .exe due to multiple levels of compression in the installer, though.

Re: Pidgin: buggy file reception behavior

2014-05-08 Thread Eion Robb
The Skype API doesn't provide any way to accept a file, unfortunately, so
you need to accept it in the client for the transfer to start. The
behaviour you're seeing is normal for the Skype plugin
On 8/05/2014 10:57 pm, Cedric Bhihe cedric.bh...@gmail.com wrote:

  Hello,
Please bear with me, as I don't know whether this is third party plugin

 Thanks you.

 My config:
 OS: Windows XP SP3 - Pidgin 2.10.9 - Skype-Plugin ? - Skype 4.2.0.163 -
 Win Firewall - AVG 2012)
 (The Skype-plugin from http://eion.robbmob.com bore no version-info
except for skype4 on the site. I assume it is the latest one.)

 Problem description:

When receiving a file sent from Skype by a buddy in the list, the Pidgin
 file transfer
window's receive or accept button is greyed out, making it impossible
 to actually
 receive said file.

Because Skype stands open in the background, switching to it and
 accepting the file is
possible. Pidgin acknowledges the action of accepting the file from Skype
 and shows an
appropriate message in the IM window. It also signals the end of the
 transmission and
places a clickable (html-like) filename in blue in the IM window. Clicking
 on it opens
 the file normally.

This buggy behavior (the accept icon being greyed out) is perfectly
 reproducible and
persistent. I have tried restarting Pidgin and even rebooting the computer
 to check for
a change in behavior ... to no avail.

Re: Logging Question

2016-06-04 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Paul,

Have a look in Tools->Preferences->Logging and make sure that the 'Log all
instant messages' is enabled, otherwise no IM's will get logged. Just to
reiterate, the logs are in %appdata%\.purple\logs which you can paste
into the Windows Explorer address bar or the Start->Run command; no
searching needed.

If it's easier, Pidgin has a built-in log viewer that you can access by
right-clicking on a buddy and choosing "View Log". From there, there's a
"Browse Logs Folder" button that will take you directly to the folder where
that chat log is stored.

Cheers,
Eion

Re: problem with "server closed cennection"

2016-06-14 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Chris,

This this case the server is the gmail xmpp server. You'd need to get a
debug log (Help->Debug Window) when receiving this error to get more
information about what's going on.

Alternatively you could try the 3rd party Hangouts plugin which has an
alternative method for connecting to the Google servers and may be able to
workaround the issue.

Eion

Re: How to get pidgin working on a server with no SSL cert

2016-06-25 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Dan,

I've just tried to connect to that XMPP server and I get a 'verify
certificate' popup once, for the self-signed certificate running on it.
Once you accept the certificate you shouldn't be bothered by it again, and
it'll show up in Tools->Certificates.

A website certificate can be different to an XMPP certificate, so trying to
extract the cert from the website won't get you far.

You can also point your server admin at services such as "Lets Encrypt" or
"Start Encrypt" which offer free, automated certificate systems.

Eion

Re: Google Talk - some buddies appearing offline when they're not

2016-04-11 Thread Eion Robb
That does sound like it could be serverside. Is there any pattern to
buddies that display online and offline? Like, is it those 'public' xmpp
addresses (with the random numbers/hex in them) that appear as offline? Or
just buddies that were added after a certain date?

Alternatively, you could try the new Hangouts plugin that I'm working on
that uses the same Hangouts protocol that the mobile (and web) apps use.

Re: Jabberd2: nss: Handshake failed

2016-04-11 Thread Eion Robb
According to
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/NSS/SSL_functions/sslerr.html
error -12263 from NSS means:

SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG -12263 "SSL received a record that exceeded
the maximum permissible length."

This generally indicates that the remote peer system has a flawed
implementation of SSL, and is violating the SSL specification.

Re: why i cannot save any of my modification in Pidgin

2016-05-15 Thread Eion Robb
Depending on the protocol you're using, the server can override your buddy
groups. I've seen this most commonly with XMPP, for which there is an
xmpp-ignore-groups plugin (listed on the
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins page) that can override
what the server forces on you, using a setting.

Something is clearly wrong with your yahoo account, as this email ended up
in my spam box because:
"It has a from address in yahoo.com but has failed yahoo.com's required
tests for authentication"

Maybe try resetting your password on the yahoo website.

Re: New Yahoo messenger with Pidgin client

2016-07-12 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Arulraj,

I've been looking over the new Yahoo but everyone seems to think it's
terrible, posting in their forums and user feedback pages about how awful
the new messenger is.

The new messenger is a completely new client and protocol with the word
"yahoo" slapped on it and it seems to have no connection to the old
messenger (new buddy list, no message interop, no message formatting, other
loss of functionality)

So my question is: is it worth it?

Should we be writing support for a protocol that noone wants when users are
leaving en masse?

Interested in your thoughts on the matter as most people I've heard from
about it are looking at alternative networks, rather than sticking with
Yahoo.

Cheers,
Eion

Re: Fonts

2016-07-10 Thread Eion Robb
Hi David,

Have you had any success with using the Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control plugin?
It allows you to specify fonts for a lot of things including the 'GTK+
Interface Font'. You can find it in Tools->Plugins.

The logging one does require a programming change, although it does sound
like you close messaging windows a lot if you've only got one message per
conversation - changing the 'Close IMs immediately when the tab is closed'
setting in Tools->Preferences->Conversations might help with that.
Alternatively you can use the SQLite Logging plugin which has an option to
display in the 'View Log' window broken down by day, rather than by
conversation.

Eion

And also a list of GTK2 themes you could try at

2017-02-08 Thread Eion Robb
Wow yeah, looks like you've got a DNS issue there :) Tried configuring
your system to use a different DNS server?

The Hangouts plugin doesn't use any of the records you're having trouble
looking up, but you might end up with trouble not being able to access
different domains instead. Fixing your DNS would be a better first step :)

"Not Authorized" generally means "wrong password". You'll either need to
update your password in pidgin, create an app password, or switch to the
Hangouts plugin which uses oauth.

replaced.

Example Script to demonstrate what I mean: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cgv7

It will just reply with whatever was sent to it. In the console, the

Current Behavior:
Input: "test1

Re: Pidgin loads automatically when my connection resets

2017-01-17 Thread Eion Robb
When you're quitting Pidgin, are you either right-clicking the system tray
icon and choosing Quit or using the Buddies->Quit menu option?

If you're not doing that, and just hitting the X to close the buddy list,
then Pidgin is still running. If it detects that your network changes,
then it's going to try to reconnect to your accounts, which might involve
redisplaying conversation/buddy list windows.

Hi there,

You're best to contact the author of the plugin (me) since Pidgin doesn't
support 3rd party plugins.

That said, there's no Mint/Ubuntu/Debian package so you'll need to compile
it yourself:

sudo apt-get install libpurple-dev libjson-glib-dev libglib2.0-dev git make;
git clone https://github.com/EionRobb/funyahoo-plusplus.git && cd
funyahoo-plusplus;
make && sudo make install

Re: Suggestion for discussion: buddies and protocols

2016-08-21 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Alex,

A lot of interesting ideas there. I think generally the main concept has
been that the idea of which protocol a contact is using is abstracted away,
which is why by default you don't see the protocol icons - "hidden
complexity" and all that. This has been achieved in Pidgin by the priority
of a buddy within a merged contact, based on which of their accounts is
more active, the idea being that you can double-click on a contact and be
speaking to the 'most available' buddy - i.e. no thought needed to work out
which buddy to talk to in a contact. Unfortunately the rise of mobile
protocols and protocols that claim that someone is offline when they're not
has complicated issues. That said, if someone messages you, your replies
will always go back on the protocol that they messaged you on last.

Also, an easier way to switch protocols is to start a conversation and then
use the "Send To" menu to pick the protocol that you want to use. You can
also use Ctrl+Up on the keyboard to repeat the last message if you want to
send out multiple messages on different protocols quickly.

The log viewer (Conversation->View Log) at the moment already displays all
of the various buddy's conversation for a merged contact in one window.
There's also a SQLite logging plugin already available that you can use to
store all messages in a SQLite db instead of as HTML files.
https://github.com/EionRobb/pidgin-sqlite-log

Hope that helps answer your questions.

Cheers,
Eion

Re: Pidgin support: Hangouts authorization code for scope access denied (oAuth 2.0)

2016-08-31 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Cedric,

The Google servers made a change as of a day or two ago and no one's yet
worked out what url we should be using for auth now.

Unfortunately the bitbucket tracker for the plugin is offline due to spam
problems, but if you keep an eye on
https://github.com/tdryer/hangups/issues/260 that's probably the closest
way to see progress. (please refrain from any "me too" posts there though
as that's not the actual issue tracker for the Pidgin plugin)

If you had previously been using it successfully and still have access to
the old config, you could take the access/refresh token from the hangouts
section of the ~/.purple/accounts.xml file on the working install and paste
that into the accounts.xml file in the new install (while Pidgin isn't
running)

Otherwise we'll have to wait until someone (or me) finds the new auth url
to use.

Cheers,
Eion

Hello,
I have spent almost 6 hours trying to learn more on my issue with Hangouts.
It seems that quite a few users on the Google "Support" Forums, have the
same access token authorization problem with Google, when trying to enable
the Hangouts account from the Pidgin client.
Curiously, there is not a hint of a solution given anywhere, where I peeked.

After mining the web and reading on the API and the oAUth 2.0 credential
authorization protocol to receive an access code, I am left with very
little to go with. Repeatedly requesting an access code past the 25 refresh
token limit per account and per client has adverse effects. I could not
find out _what_ effects those were and how to circumvent them. I think I
have not gone beyond that limit just yet, but I am sure not going to
request one again, before being clear on what the problem is and how to
solve it...

Maybe someone will find the time to nudge me in the right direction.
For reference I am working from a clean Pidgin install after having flushed
it from my Ubuntu 14.04.4 Desktop, including the ~/.purple directory.

My other plugins are:
 - pidgin-twitter (does not appear to be functional as it does not show in
the account protocols' list ),
 - purple-skypeweb (works well),
 - telegram-Purple (works well).

Re: Pidgen font

2016-09-02 Thread Eion Robb
Hi David,

If you just want to change how things are displayed in Pidgin, the easiest
way is through the Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control plugin in Tools->Plugins. If
it's about the formatting you're sending, the default format is set in
Tools->Preferences->Conversations->Default Formatting, and can be modified
on a per-conversation basis in the conversation window (Options->Show
Formatting Toolbars in the conversation window will toggle the formatting
options)

Not all protocols will support all formatting options (some might just
support bold/italics but others support font size and/or colour), and many
protocols don't support any (eg IRC, Facebook)

Which protocol are you trying to use that you're not able to send formatted
messages on?

Cheers,
Eion

Re: Suggestion for discussion: cleaning up the plugins page

2016-09-05 Thread Eion Robb
There's been a few attempts at a Pidgin Plugins Website over the years.
Most of them turned out as flops.

As a plugin developer, I feel that having somewhere like
http://adiumxtras.com/ or https://addons.instantbird.org/ to be able to
upload plugins to would be great, but as a Pidgin dev, I'd be very nervous
about hosting dll/so's and the added complications of testing for malware
that goes along with it.

> 1. Removing the links that are no longer resolving.

The ThirdPartyPlugins wiki is editable, feel free to remove or update those
links

> 2. Indicating outdated plugins that no longer work.

Due to the way Pidgin follows semver, all plugins *should* work with newer
versions in any Pidgin 2.x release. Are you finding some plugins that
aren't?

> 3. Indicating whether binary releases are available, or better yet,
providing binaries for all plugins that do not have them yet (mostly for
MS-Windows DLLs)

See above about not hosting dll's

> 4. Indicating the date/time of the latest source and binary releases
(useful for plugins that change often)

This could change often and would just end up with noise. I like Shlomi
Fish's link about it :)

In the past, we used to have additional columns of information on the
ThirdPartyPlugins wiki page, however this just caused additional noise and
gamification of devs trying to push their plugins to the top. After that
was a blight on the inboxes, I reorganised it all to be alphabetical, and
removed all the fluff that was unnecessary.

Hi Richard,

The only website login that Pidgin has is to the bug tracker and you don't
need to be logged into that to be able to use Pidgin. You might be getting
confused with logging into a service instead, which you'll need to register
with that protocol yourself through their website/sign up form.

Hi Cedric,

This looks like it's crashing in the pidgin-encription plugin. Try
uninstalling this plugin (or disabling by removing
/usr/lib/pidgin/encrypt.so) and try again.

You might also want to pass the backtrace onto the authors of that plugin
to see if they can offer any advice on any workarounds or fixes.

Probably better to discuss on the developer mailing list, cc'd

Are you having trouble with development on Windows? Have you followed all
the steps on the BuildingWinPidgin wiki page?

I do all my development and testing solely on Superior Windows and I've
never really run into any problems. Just setting up the dev env is what
takes the longest, but that's not much harder than following a few steps.

No reason Visual Studio can't be used. I've used it in the past for
compiling a plugin that needed to use Microsoft's C++ linking to work.

The Instantbird guys use Visual Studio apparently for doing their builds. (
They mention something about an incompatibility with the time_t typedef
though?)

I've got a pidgin.vcxproj here that I can send through if that would help?
Otherwise, there's stuff in the source tree (in one of the summer of code
branches) that has changes for compiling with Visual Studio.

There's also https://code.google.com/archive/p/libpurple-msvc-win32/ that
might have some stuff in it (haven't checked)

Hi again,

Which protocols are you seeing no buddies for? Are you actually connected
to the accounts (see in Accounts->Manage Accounts... From the buddy list)
and set to Online/Available in the buddy list?

What protocols are you unable to connect to? You might need to email though
a debug log from Help->Debug Window as you reconnect to the account to be
able to see what's going on with things and work out why you aren't seeing
any buddies.

Also make sure you cc in the support@ mailing list in case someone else is

Unfortunately an end user cannot enable carbons in Pidgin, it would require
adding the patch to the source and recompiling Pidgin.

There was work to bring this into mainline Pidgin code for Pidgin 3.0 as
part of the summer of code 2015

There's a "suggested contacts" list that you can invite people to the new

found an api call that can be made to retrieve that list.

Re: Pidgin on Lx: Anomaly by sending/receiving link as IM with Telegram (Purple) extension

2016-10-04 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Cedric,

You might have more luck getting an answer from the Telepathy plugin
developers, either on their issue tracker on github or in the
Telegram-Purple development group chat.

Something else you can check is that you're not using the Conversation
Colours plugin (in Tools->Plugins) as this can interfere with colours (and
also inline images)

Re: Pidgin Plugin Required to Pop up Group chat

2016-08-18 Thread Eion Robb
https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/15354 probably explains it better than I
could:

"Those options both depend on cooperation from your Window Manager and
other applications.

The 'Present' option simply requests that your WM make the window the
active window. What your WM/DE does with that is entirely up to it.

The 'Raise' option directly requests a change in the Z-order of the window
but that will only effect a change with regard to other windows within the
same class/type (or that aren't otherwise specially handled)."

Re: Pidgin unable to connect to talk.google.com

2016-08-23 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Chuan,

The FAQ page
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Protocol%20Specific%20Questions#gtalk_2fa
talks about this:

If you get this error, you might need to allow "less secure apps" to
connect via https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps or set
an app password for Pidgin via
https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords

Alternatively, you can use the Hangouts plugin
https://bitbucket.org/EionRobb/purple-hangouts which uses OAuth to login.

Eion

there's an option for 'Always on top'. Is that the setting that you

Re: Issue with Contacts

2016-10-03 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

When you say you "signed in with [your] Google account" do you mean signing
into GTalk/XMPP or Hangouts?

Also, when you say you moved the pidgin account, did you copy the entire
~/.purple folder to the new computer, or just the accounts.xml file? If
you had copied over the entire .purple folder it should have copied over
the blist.xml file too which would have had the buddy list including
buddies that weren't on the server.

Hi Thoth,

You could try using the Message Notification plugin (in Tools->Plugins) and
playing around with the settings there if you need a bit more control

The only difference I'm seeing here between Trillian and Pidgin is the
xmlns not being sent by Trillian

I'm not familiar with the XMPP XEP's to know if the xmlns is required but
http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0085.html suggests it might be? Oh,
although it looks like Trillian is using
https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0022.html for instead?

I'm going to cc the development mailing list in case someone else has an

Hi again,

Please include support@ in your replies in case someone else is able to
answer your question. Also, one email is enough, not 5.

When picking the protocol type in the dropdown list, make sure you use

Hi again,

So I've looked through the code and Pidgin supports XEP-0085 but not the

looks to be with Trillian using an old and out of date spec.

Re: Set timestamp format for conversation?

2016-11-21 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

The "Message Timestamp Formats" plugin has an option to "Show dates in..."
"Always"

But you can also use the "Irssi Features" plugin (in the
purple-plugin-pack) which has a "Date Change Notification" option which
will display in the conversation history area and logs when the date
changed.

Eion

Re: Trouble w/ Google XMPP mail notifications on Pidgin

2016-11-28 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Bernard,

The top note in the link you've provided says "Note: This extension will no
longer be supported by Google XMPP servers as of July 18 2016, for API
access to Gmail see the Gmail API documentation.". Unfortunately as you've
found the email notifications no longer come through in the XMPP account.

I've been looking into whether it'd be possible to add this into the
Hangouts plugin via the Gmail API, but this isn't in there at the moment.

As a workaround you can use a browser extension such as
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/oeopbcgkkoapgobdbedcemjljbihmemj
for Chrome.

Cheers,
Eion

Hi Alex,

Unfortunately the version of GTK we use on Windows versions of Pidgin isn't
new enough to support emoji characters. As a workaround you can use one of
the unicode emoji emote themes, eg https://github.com/stv0g/unicode-emoji
or https://github.com/VxJasonxV/emoji-for-pidgin

Re: Question about using with Cisco IM

2016-12-06 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Cesar,

This probably means you're using gnutls as your ssl plugin. You can
double-check through the Help->Build Information screen to see if NSS or
Gnutls is enabled. You'll need to remove the gnutls plugin from
/usr/purple-2/ssl-gnutls.so (or equivalent) to be able to switch to use NSS
and then use the NSS Configuration plugin.

Cheers,
Eion

Yes you can join group chats for both those services without needing a web

group chats on Hangouts. Links to those plugins can be found in the wiki at

Re: New account help

Hi there,

Can you email through the settings you've used to set up your pc20.net
account (excluding the password)? Can you also get a debug log as you
connect: to do this, open the Debug Window (from the buddy list,
Help->Debug Window), then reconnect to the pc20.net account by clicking the
checkbox next to it, then copy-paste the output of the Debug Window into an
email back to us. That should help track down where the error is happening.

Re: Pidgin upgrade 2.12

2017-03-28 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Joe,

The process of upgrading Pidgin normally involves installing the new
version over the top of the old, no uninstall necessary.

Re: Jabber account

2017-03-24 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

@ isn't a valid character for an XMPP username so it needs to be escaped as
you've found. The escaping for it is going to be very specific to each XMPP
server. I've seen it being escaped as either \40 or %40

Re: Unicode Not Working

2017-04-03 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

Pidgin can't use the windows alt-codes, but the GTK codes are working fine
here. Are you getting the *u* character displaying on screen? If you
right-click on the message send text area thing, then go to the "Input
Methods" menu, is "Simple (system)" picked?

Re: AIM login

2017-04-03 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Donald,

We've heard through a few of our support channels that you're still seeing
people not using the correct details when they're logging into AIM from
Pidgin.

Dequis emailed you last month with the urls that we're fetching that are
indeed showing distId=1715 and devId=do1UCeb5gNqxB1S1 - he also asked if
you could send through the details of your Pidgin version that you were
testing with.

Are you able to confirm which auth URLs we should be using so we can try
track down why you're not seeing the updated distId/devId?

Cheers,
Eion

 Hey Donald!

As you may have heard we already released pidgin 2.12.0 (together with
libpurple and finch 2.12.0), updating the distid/devids.

 Here's what we used:

 Pidgin:
 Distid: 1715
 Devid: do1UCeb5gNqxB1S1

 Libpurple:
 Distid: 1717
 Devid: ma19CwYN9i9Mw5nY

 Finch:
 Distid: 1718
 Devid: ma18nmEklXMR7Cj_

 The first two are normal.

The third said in the original email "No usage since August

Re: My font changes aren't making it to my screen

2017-04-17 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Cassy,

You might want to take a look at the Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control plugin in
Tools->Plugins - in particular the "Fonts" tab in the plugin settings.
It'll let you customise the interface to make the font size and colours for
the interface larger and different colours :)

Eion

Re: Pidgin Behavior

2017-04-19 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

It looks like you're a Windows user so unfortunately Constantine's advice
probably won't help in this instance.

You might want to look at the 'Message Notification' plugin in
Tools->Plugins, and make sure you dont have the 'raise conversation window'
or 'present conversation window' options checked. You could also try using
the "Full Screen Busy" plugin (on
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins ) which will set your
Pidgin status to Away when you're in a full-screen application, and should
stop new messages from annoying you :)

Cheers,
Eion
