There hasn't been any word of Planet E or SS afterparties, but neither threw parties last year so I don't think it's out of the ordinary. It would be nice if someone added Carl to their lineup, although that might just frustrate festival goers more seeing as there are well over 100 seperate events happening between Wednesday and Monday. It's really getting difficult to decide where to go. From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Conspicuous Absences Date: Mon, 24 May 2004 21:55:31 +0100 Any word on Planet E or Sound Signature parties? Not looking for details ahead of time or anything, just wondering if they're gonna happen. Seems odd Carl Craig is not on any of the lineups I've seen so far given his (deservedly) ever-increasing profile as a DJ. No sign of Theo Parrish either... By my count, these two Detroit DJs have probably played London more than anyone else in the last year. Am I reading too much into this, or would this not be a huge indication that both parties are due for announcement soon? Am I just thinking wishfully? Is it conceivable they wouldn't get booked anywhere for the festival? Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Free yourself from those irritating pop-up ads with MSn Premium. (313) Detroit and Geography
All this talk about where one is from has me thinking of something that has been nipping at me since I made the trek from East to West about 5 or 6 years ago; how the landscape has such an important effect on the impact of music. For those of you not familiar with the US, the Northeast, on the coast, in cities like Boston and NY (and Detroit) is very industrialized. Here on the West Coast, especially in the Bay Area (San Francisco - or should I say Pacifica, cause technically, I'm 5 miles south of the city?), the land is more open and people are generally more in touch with the environment around them. Some places, like LA, don't have a city center and seem like one endless suburb. So, the point is that the West Coast does not generally feel like an East Coast city. Anyways, upon moving from Boston to SF, I noticed that all the music I had previously been into, like UR, the more hard-hitting techno, etc, did not feel or sound the same to me. The impact was no longer there. Driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, and seeing the towering rocks and blue ocean and blasting UR's X101 makes no sense to me any longer. Hard to feel like a techno rebel with all this sunshine and blue skies around. Although I still can get into the jazzier UR stuff, I avoid the hard techno bin at the local shop now. House, funk, disco, environ, it all sounds better out here somehow. Not to imply that techno, especially Detroit techno, does not have a universal appeal on some level, but it's taken moving around to help me understand that music's appeal lies more than in just the art. The cultural milieu, and the environmental surroundings have an important impact as well. I dunno what you call that stuff? nu rb? gawd knows not much electronics in it though... I dunno I need to listen more, it sounded OK. maybe check it again, but I ain't saying it's hot.. just maybe not my style as such... you play alot of 'different' sorts of things though? ha ha, for some reason it reminds me of kelvin! bet he plays it...! probably you need to know that for some reason in the last few years, I started to just buy Carl Craig tracks pretty much blind. I never used to, dunno what changed there. I think he had a run of just outstanding remixes, which I felt were some of the best techno records around at that time. Also, I think some of Carl's best tracks are when he already starts with something, a sample, or obviously parts for a mix... I'm crap at buying records sometimes, I end up with stuff from obvious producers, I hardly ever take a chance on things. guess thats what a ltd budget does for you. blah blah blah, I talk too much s**t. RE: (313) Re: Koobla / Vinyl Junkies
Well Phonic on Poland Street is *sort of* picking up were Koobla left off. I mean two people who used to worka t Koobla now work there. However, the way Phonic got started is the subject of some controversy and the fall out from Koobla has ineveitbaly meant some lingering bitterness. Shame really. The really nice Koobla record shop folks who are now out of a job. That said, Phonic is very very good. Wide ranging - very large for an independent record shop and well arranged. big 313 stock too. No trance/hard house etc. Some rarities too. Never seen Mahogany Brown on vinyl anywhere else for instance. k -Original Message- From: Melody Ng [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 12:58 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Re: Koobla / Vinyl Junkies Glad to hear that vinyl junkies picked up a bit on the 313 stuff. You could say that about music, or indeed any art form in general. I happen to think that listening, dissecting and enjoying music one of the best uses of intelligence. That's all he's doing... ;-) Peace. Jason, No offense, but do you think your obviously very high intelligence and no doubt talents too, could be better employed than checking the relative compressed-sounding qualities of the kick drums of different editions of the same release ?!?! ;-) Peace, Ken
Re: (313) Burial mixes
Wait a minute... I love the burial mixes for many reasons, among them is their incredibly deep reverberating, yet astonishingly precise bass lines and percussive patterns. Yet, I find myself missing 3 or 4 of the Burial 10s I'd really like. Turns out that the Burials happen to be pressed on a 2 different single album LP formats, with 4 tracks per side. Thats good news, unless of course, the grooves are too crowded, which often is the case when people opt to press LP's on one disc instead of multiple discs. Crowded grooves can cause all sorts of sound quality problems including a diminished low end sound , but Im sure most people here already know what over crowding can do to sound quality. I've learned this lesson the hard way times and ended up unsatisfied with a particular pressing. Ken, on a personal tip. I might be dumb as a rock and equally untalented, ask anyone :) Don't patronized me while you are trying to invalidate my curiosity in the same breath. My concerns are valid for the content which this community is based upon. So, once again list readers. Anyone care to contrast / compare the 10s vs. the LP formats of the burial label, especially the level of the bass lines and kick drums? Please do so very critically as i would if i could. - S.I.I Somewhere In Iowa On Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at 06:42 AM, Ken Odeluga wrote: Jason, No offense, but do you think your obviously very high intelligence and no doubt talents too, could be better employed than checking the relative compressed-sounding qualities of the kick drums of different editions of the same release ?!?! ;-) Peace, Ken -Original Message- From: jason kenjar [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 12:13 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Burial mixes hi 313 has anyone noticed if the kick drums on the Artists/Versions compilations sound as deep or kicks as hard as they do on the 10s? So, once again list readers. Anyone care to contrast / compare the 10s vs. the LP formats of the burial label, especially the level of the bass lines and kick drums? Please do so very critically as i would if i could. that's a good question. ok i have a couple of the 10s and the two LPs. from the stuff i've listened to so far (tho i've not done a back to back yet...i'll try and do that tonite) i'd say they've done a good job on the LPs more when i've done a comparison on a slightly different tack i'd love to hear an 'arrange and process' on the Burial Mix stuff. robin...

I dig it too, but the pepe bradock get down dub version is sooo much better IMO, although not for DJing I guess. ive played that c2 rmx nearly every time ive deejayed for the last year, and it ALWAYS gets people going. its a guaranteed floor filler. its got that long into with the claps and then the buildup of the bassline, and then when the drums come in its pandamonium. the pepe mix is alright. tom andythepooh.com

It doesn't sound like her. i didnt think so either, and ive actually been listening to baduizm and worldwide underground for the past couple days like nonstop. I think you said in your post that you'd listened to a snatch of this and picked it up as it sounded different. My impression on listening to it in the shop was that it was not one of C2s strongest moments - in fact I really disliked it! yeah i didnt feel it at all either. i liked the breakdown with the piano but otherwise it sounded like a generic wanna be dancehall/r+b pop crossover, in the worst possible way. in other not so suprising news i bought the rerelease of parallel dimensions for the 4 cuts i didnt already have. id have preferred if they each had a side of vinyl dedicated to them, but oh well. the pressing wasnt too quiet. tom andythepooh.com

i've certanly gotten more of a hip-hop and downtempo vibe going since moving from Detroit to LA. slower beats for slower days? On Tue, 25 May 2004, sasha wrote: All this talk about where one is from has me thinking of something that has been nipping at me since I made the trek from East to West about 5 or 6 years ago; how the landscape has such an important effect on the impact of music. Greetings all. I just joined this list a couple of days ago in the hope that I can revive my interest in Detroit Techno. I've always loved that electronic Detroit sound, but over the past few years I've not been buying much music at all. Mainly due to a lack of money and not knowing what to look out for. Anyway, I was wondering if there were many artists out there with mp3s to share? I used to visit mp3.com every so often where they had a Detroit section, and some of the music was really quite good. Also, I've got an album from a number of years ago by the Detroit Escalator Company. Does anyone know if they're still going? That's one of my favourite all time albums. Really nice music. One other thing, if there are any artists or producers out there looking for drum machine samples from the 80s and 90s, I've got all the samples from 45 drum machines on my website www.avene.org All free to download. Any info would be much appreciated (along with addresses if possible). Cheers, Chris.
(313) Detroit Record Shops, The Return of...
Record Time, Roseville closed over festival weekend due to flooding... Can anyone confirm whether this info is correct or not ?? Pretty gutted if it's true as not only is it a great record store but it also means one less place to shop during our short stay in the D. Having said that there's always Melodies Memories, Vibes and Record Time, Ferndale to visit whilst me and my homies are over for the fest. Can anyone out there tell me the best way to get from Melodies Memories to Vibes and the Record Time in Ferndale. Don't need precise directions - just enough info to give to a cab driver. Does anyone know what the opening hours are for Vibes also ? A friend has told me that it's only open certain days of the week - is this true ?? Any info would be much appreciated, Chris.

Re: (313) Re: Koobla / Vinyl Junkies
Vinyl Junkies is a wicked shop and in my experience has plenty 313 stuff. What i do find, however, is that they don't seem to be very well-stocked and so tend to run out of copies of what you want (although this could just be indicative of how many heads shop there). It's definately the friendliest shop in London, so much so that i just got an invitation from them about a party they are throwing on 11th June for anyone who has ever shopped there - what great guys! Info at: http://www.vinyl-junkies.com/ And to keep this more OT, CC, Theo and Mike Grant all shop at Vinyl Junkies when they are in town. Koobla was rubbish. I am loathe to shop at an establishment where the staff know less than me about records, it really does mean that they don't know enough to be working there.
