Re: macros

2005-08-16 Thread Muddle Man
I had an iBook G3 900 for 18 months. Within that 18
months it broke THREE times. Logic board each time. It
was under the video card recall the first time. The
second time I had to pay the full cost of the repair
(no AppleCare, $350 flat fee). The logic board died
again on the 88th day of the 90 day warranty from the
2nd repair. I got it repaired a third time then sold
it! Good riddens. I was really, really, really angry
and considered becoming a turncoat and going with a PC
laptop. Once the anger cleared and I could think, I
got a 12" PB G4 1.5. It is awesome and I wish I'd done
it sooner! No more iBooks for me. My wife has a 12"
iBook. We'll see what happens.

Re: best photo organizer

2005-08-16 Thread Claire Hart
I've had my last three attempted replies to this list bounce. It
says "Your message cannot be posted. It has the content-type:
multipart/alternative, and this list accepts plain text only." I'm
only doing a simple reply. I'm not pasting anything in. Is it a
Tiger thing? (I just upgraded yesterday.) Anyway, I will write a
new post, rather than doing a reply.

By way of reminder, I'm the one trying to save photos from iPhoto to
CD, but iPhoto keeps filing them for me in folders that are numbered
by year, then within the years by month, and then within the months
by day.

To the two who suggested that I drag my photos to a CD and then burn
the CD, or drag the photos to a folder, and burn that, I will tell
you that I have tried to do that. However, my group of 1100+ photos
is actually a compilation of photos taken by 7-8 families over the
course of a basketball season. Everyone took their photos to Wal-
Mart or Walgreens and then gave me the CD of their photos, and
several times throughout the year as well. As a result, these photos
often have duplicate numbering systems. So when I try to save them
all at once, I am told that "a photo already exists with that name,
and do I want to replace it?" I tried that once, and ended up with
around 600 photos, so that means that about 500 of them are somehow
duplicates.

My PC son says there's an automatic way to renumber into a
consecutive series a group of photos, files, whatever, that are
grouped into one folder. If I could do that, then I could burn all
of these photos without using iPhoto to do it.

I am also experimenting with EasyShare, which is a free download from
Kodak. However, I cannot figure out how to transfer, import, export,
drag or drop the photos from iPhoto to EasyShare. EasyShare
automatically found and imported about 80 photos that I had elsewhere
on my hard drive, but there doesn't seem to be a "bridge" available
to move the photos from iPhoto. (I have sent an email to their
customer service asking this question as well, but it takes 24
hours...) A Mac friend suggested EasyShare because he likes to share
photos with his Windows family members.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Claire

going to take one (or a few) photos to a commercial photo place (or

MacStubler is just a sniffer. A beefier version of the Airport menu.
IIRC, it has the ability to "tag" APs you find, but not an official

JiWire is a database of wireless hotspots. I think JiWire's db is

a phonebook for APs.

I can't help with not seeing the value of a slim widget to replace a

It always amazes me how many "computer people" are stupid. But that's
what most are taught in the "vocational schools" called Colleges and

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-16 Thread Karen Thompson
I think it is disgusting when students are not given the opportunity to
explore different operating systems. And yes, it is the IT staff that have
no imagination or inclination to learn another OS. They are biased and just
plain lazy. I'm sure there are some out there who would jump at the
opportunity to learn something other than Windoze.

What is definitely puzzling to me is the Mac systems were taken out of
graphic design labs. The college offers an AA in communication arts. In the
real world about 85% of design studios and print shops use Mac systems. How
does that prepare the student for the industry? It doesn't. Of course, when
I went to college, there were no computers. We did everything by hand,
including lettering. The good old days of paste-up with mylar, wax and Xacto
knives. And then there were the Vari-typer machines that preceeded our
modern computers for typesetting. I much prefer our technology of today but
wish those who don't do the work, don't make the decisions of the tools
professionals use.

As for that B&W computer, talk to the lab personnel. Maybe you can make a
deal and free up that space for yet another Windoze machine.

If you're not close enough to "see" it with your airport, you won't

CBS even did a story about it on the national news at 6:30. said
there was over 5000 people, and even had some footage of them opening
the gates. The problem was it was held at the race way, and the
building was not close to the gate they opened so everyone went running
for the building..

Re: macros

2005-08-16 Thread Aase

Hi Claire,

Having used OS 9 until New Year's, I am embarrassed to admit that I
never used this function (it rings familiar in my ears, so I guess I
knew about it, but...)... How silly, this sounds really sensible to
use, especially for "people like me", I guess - who have joint
problems... I use other keyboard shortcuts, like e.g. Option+C for
copy etc., but that's it... I would be very interested in hearing
about possibilities for doing this under OSX. I will be upgrading to
Tiger soon too.

I just got my iBook back for the 3rd time, having been without it
alltogether for around 4 months, because of that "little backlight
problem". The last time Apple said that the company that does repairs
for them, hadn't replaced all the parts they should have, so they
needed one more chance, but their normal practice was that if a
computer had not been fixed on 3 tries, the customer should get a new
one. Now I got it back, and see they changed the logiboard only,
which they did before, so I can't help but wonder, if it will last
this time. I also discovered that they screen is separated from it's
"frame", so it needs to go back. And I really don't feel like letting
them have it again, God knows how long it will take, and I am sick
and tired of it all. Plus the loaner they finally gave me this last
time (after waiting for 3 weeks, never offered me one before), was
kind of crappy (pardon my french, but I don't find only working a
little in iPhoto with 3-4 pics before it crashes, too much fun)...
Well, I mailed the company, and guess I will be calling Apple
tomorrow, so we'll see... Hopefully I can soon feel that I can really
get going using MY wonderful "new" iBook, with everything in order
and working and learning to enjoy OS X properly (instead of moaning
over having to use a mess of a PC or an awful old PB loaner without
airport and way too little RAM)... That company has had this iBook
more time than I have since I bought it...

Oh shoot, now this will probably be too long... And sorry, didn't
mean to dump this on you and the rest, guess I more or less blurted
it out, can you tell I have had it?

Good luck with the shortcuts, hope it works out!!!

AaseM. :)

I am also a long-time CCC user but have now switched to SuperDuper.

It's as easy (or easier) to use as CCC and has the added advantage of
being much faster when "smart updating" (synching) an already cloned
drive (maybe also when doing the initial clone, but I haven't timed
it). With CCC, it used to take me about 45-50 minutes to synch
roughly 22 GB; with SD it's about 15-20. Support via the online

Re: best photo organizer

2005-08-16 Thread Muddle Man
I found this happened to me as well. It happens when
you use iPhoto's built in burn function. It's actually
burning an iPhoto library to be imported into another
iPhoto. You can get around this by selecting the pics
you want and then dragging them on to the CD. Once
copied, the burn will be the real pics and not an
iPhoto library.

Portfolio 7 [Was: Best photo organizer]

I have found Portfolio Desktop Edition 5.0.2 (running in Classic

I basically did the same thing just yesterday evening (night). After trying
to copy some huge files from my internal startup partition to an external
FireWire drive and getting Finder errors about problems reading/writing some
files, I fired up my Tiger install DVD, rebooted and launched Disk Utility.
I selected my startup partition and did a disk verification. Of course, Disk
Utility found problems. I then went to repair the disk. Disk Utility started
again, found the problem and attempted to repair it, which it did not!
Moreover, it left my partition in such a state that it wouldn't mount
anymore! I had a backup from about 2 weeks ago, when I left for vacation,
but since I used my PowerBook while in vacation, I didn't want to lose what
I had, particularly emails.

So, I went to the Alsoft website and purchased DiskWarrior online. I was
able to download the application, installed it on my Tiger backup and fired
it up. I initially got a strange error message because I initially didn't
install it in /Applications/Utilities where the application expects to be.
Anyway, once I figured it out, I put it where it belongs and launched it. I
was afraid I would not be able to select my internal startup partition but
there it was. So, I clicked the repair button and after a few minutes of
work (15-20 minutes maybe), it reported that it had found the problem and
successfully fixed it. It was a problem with some directory structure, no
bad block or something like that. My partition was now mounted so I launched
Disk Utility and had it verify the disk. It didn't report any problem, so I
rebooted from it and all has been fine so far. The total cost was $87.90.

I've seen many good praises for DiskWarrior and I did mention many times
that I've never had to use such a tool but I have now to admit after using
Mac OS X for 4 years that it was a welcome help and savior. Kudos to Alsoft!

Back to the original question, after I successfully booted from my internal
startup partition and checking that everything was fine, I proceeded to
duplicate it on my external FireWire disk using Carbon Copy Cloner. There is
a documented problem with CCC under Tiger and if you try to launch it under
your own user ID, you will get some error message. Knowing this, I launched
it with 'Pseudo' under root and was able to duplicate my startup partition
without any problem.

When you organize scanned photos in iPhoto do they all show up as the
date you scanned them? The program has no way of knowing when the
photo was taken.
My sister is starting in on a pile of family slides and was asking
about what program to use.

You're right --no way to tell the date taken and that is a different
problem unless you are the person who meticulously dates slides and
negatives--that's not me. And you do get the date "created"--the date
scanned or if a CD--the date digitized. The first step I take before
scanning is to manually sort and attempt to date as best I can using a
viewer and a light box. It is a slow process but very rewarding when
you see these those old images com e out of the scanner. I have a
collection of about 50 years and then I will work on the old family
snapshots.

I'm inclined towards Graphic Convertor .
It has a "browser" function that displays thumbnails of all the images
in a folder. You can move, delete, rotate or rename in the browser
window. If you open an image there are more editing functions than I
can figure out. It's shareware, free to try.

I can't help much with GC--I have it but never have learned it. The
key question--does it have a cataloging and find function based on key
words --or as Brian said in an earlier post "using the directory/file
path" words as keywords. If you don't have this ability, you end up
just moving them around into different "shoeboxes". At this point, I
have done about 4000 of my digital images and it is really neat to put
in my granddaughter' name as the search keyword and see hundreds of her
pictures sorted out which then can be sorted based on any of the file
data such as date taken.
iPhoto does have editing functions (I use PhotoshopElements 3) but I
don't use it. I recommend PE3--great support and user's forums etc.

Since I have put Portfolio down--I will commend them on the keyword
process--you can do about anything you want with it and once I learned
how (little help from them or manual) it works very nicely. I use the
file browser in PE3 to see what I am cataloging and what key words to
use (otherwise you are working blind--working from numbers and file
path info). The two work very nicely together.

I suppose I should poke around iPhoto and see if it has a similar
"browser" function.

Does iPhoto offer much in the way of editing functions.

To my knowledge, iPhoto, is basically a browser--that is you can see
all of your thumbnails by date/roll and if you used the keyword
process--you can sort and find. Even though I used iPhoto for my
digital collection--I had not been consistent with the keyword
process--so now I'm doing it after the fact.

The couple of times I've opened iPhoto I've been put off by it's
desire to take over the process but perhaps there's something in
preferences that would allow me to browse existing folders.

I recommend you try it out--buy a book that is devoted to it and learn
what it will do before putting more money into software.

I like iPhoto and have used it since inception, but I knew my needs
were going to require something more. I would be happy to assist your
sister if she desires it.

John

CCC & Tiger

2005-08-16 Thread Francesco sciacca
I just tried to clone a fresh Tiger install upgraded tp 10.4.2 to make
myself a ready-to-go disk to use in emergency and I didn't succed. I then
used Disk Utility to create a disk image of the freshly installed Tiger
partition, then I burned it to DVD, all well. When it came to restore,
though, it appears to do the restore procedure, but eventually the target
partition is empty or does not appear in the startup disk preference pane.

Is CCC working properly with Tiger? If yes, is it necessary to clone a "just
installed" partition or should it be able to clone any partition as it was
the case with Tiger?

Same story for the disc image: anything I should take care of to suceed in
creating an emergency disc? It looks as I'm doing something wrong, but I
can't think of what.

Darn webmail, sorry for all the footers last time (hi listnanny!) LEM
should get 1.5X revenue for those.

The Samsung ML-1740 from Circuit City:

Anyway- to be clear- that's a rebate deal, but CC has been reliable with

rebates, for me.

I have not printed to this printer from less than OSX, but it should be
OK-
it's not postscript, but Samsung GDI, so rendering may be a little
slower
than a postscript printer.

Still likely a good tradeoff compared to inkjet carts. At this time I
am

The best strategy is two printers. For excellent black and white text
use a black and white laser printer. There are nice consumer models
out for $150 - $200 from HP and Brother. For color, you may get by
nicely with a cheaper color ink-jet. The real cost over the years is
for the ink-jet cartridges anyway. HP and Canon Pixma series get
consistently good reviews. The Consumer Reports of May 2005 gives
ratings on 17 ink-jets and 3 B&W lasers. Machome magazine of Sep 2005
has reviews of ink-jets. Macworld.com has reviews on line and you can
loads more at PC World and PC Magazine. Google by brand name/model.

I have a network setup in my home and the Quicksilver 2002, wallstreet
II, 8600 upgrade, and the PC are all talking just fine to each other.
I would suggest getting an inexpensive hub to connect everything
together and then just turn it on. Whoa not quite that simple. First
go to this web page and read his networking article it will help you a
lot. Just disregard the PC stuff. It is now doable with the included
software in OS X. It is just a pain to get it configured right from
the PC side to the Macintosh. The biggest problem the you will find is
that you have to hard boot both machines for them to recognize each
other on the network. If you still have problems after reading this
article contact me and I will help you through it step by step. All
you need is time and patience.

Re: Looking for printer suggestions

2005-08-16 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Thank you Ron. I believe I have the Powerprint software, but if not your
offer is much appreciated and I'll be back! As I'm on a tight budget,
I'm now looking at either the Samsung suggested by Brian with its mega
rebate or an old HP as you suggest (I love the HPs my employer
uses--real workhorses.)
All this info you've provided is so useful--I have a lot to learn.
Kerry

If you need high quality text, a laser printer is the only way to go.

With the PowerPrint cable you can use almost any printer. I have a
powerprint cable attached to an old HP Laserjet 4L(parallel) and it
works well for text. You can find older HP laserjets fairly cheap if
you are on a budget. With the Powerprint cable and software you can
use any HP parallel or mac serial laser printer and most other
parallel printers. HP made Mac serial LaserJets which were designated
with an "M" in the model number. ie: LaserJet 4ML instead of the 4L.
Same printer but with a serial port for Macs.

If you don't have the PowerPrint software I can send an older version
to you or show you where to download it. It's basically abandonware
now anyway. The newer PP software can be found on Ebay but is for USB
to parallel cables and may not work.

Or you can buy a new LaserJet as suggested but if you need quality
text stay away from inkjet printers. Inkjets eat ink and get really
expensive compared to a good Laser printer and the quality is not even
close.

Yes. The bare drive will fit a Wallstreet II module. I just replaced one.

No. The 1400 module will not fit in the Wallstreet II drive bay.

Either of these will should work, although filenames might not look as you
expect, you should be able to figure out what is what.

You may run into file name restrictions, Toast 3.5.7 I think will tell you
if some need renamed (shorter max filename, plus limits on non-standard
characters exist). It's been ages since I used that Toast and I don't
recall if it will burn >8.3 filenames but the Mac just doesn't display it,
or what.

In a related issue, you may find this helpful if you are dealing with
reading Windows CDs under 9.x and having problems.

Toast 3.5.7. I acquired the YamahaCRW4416SX used just the burner, a disc
and some cables. I have had to figure it all out on my own. I can make CDs
for my self and my photo scrapbooking purposes but not for friends who of
course are all windows. I can make audio CDs...if I need to which I haven't
really had to.

> What format did you use for the disk?

Hmmm, Mac Files and Folders...this is it, isn't it...under the format menu
I have these options, which one would I use to make a Kodak Kiosk ready
disc.

Mac Volume
Mac Files and Folders
ISO 9660
Mac/ISO Hybrid
Audio

Thanks Brian

What about firewire disc mode? I'm not sure what powerbooks had what

boot one machine holding down the t key I think then that machine
looks like a firewire drive to the other machine. That would be the
fastest and easiest I think. You just connect them with a standard 6
pin firewire cable. Faster than a crossover ethernet cable.

Firewire disc mode? Unfortunately, I only have firewire on the iBook
500,

and not on the Wallstreet II.

The Wallstreet II has USB, but only through a PCMCIA card which I have
inserted. . .

How would you recommend doing this with either an Ethernet crossover
cable

or a pair of USB cables routed through a USB hub?

Alternatively, what else might I try?

All the best,

Dear List-mate,

How do I connect two PowerBooks, a Wallstreet II running OS 9.2.2 and
an
iBook 500, running OS X 10.3.9 to one another, so that I can copy
files from

one to the other?

Maybe there's a similar thing you can do with the software you bought?
