Wow! I never tried to do that. That would help me to know what the
most popular names used by ancestors were by half century, something I
was trying to figure out. Or I could use that to figure out who was
living in what area at the same time. Or I could let my imagination
go on that one a bit for some other little benefits.

I'm with you on sorting names by dob; it's one of the two
relatively small
FTM features that I miss. For now I send a GEDCOM from Legacy to
an old
copy of FTM and sort there, but it would certainly be handy to be
able to do
it within Legacy. Seems it would be easy enough to add. I don't
understand

the lack of a dob sort for names.

You can actually divide a large screen into two smaller ones using the
free Acer Gridvista

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Acer-Gridvista.shtml

This allows you to run two applications 'maximised' without juggling
the overlaps. But you do need to have a large screen to start with

Sherry, just save the web picture to where you keep photos you link to

put everything in there using sub folders for organization). Then you

As I said in my previous sending, the fourth screen is the 'photo directory',
which I have subdivded as such:
E:photos/
pictures/
photos1 through photos9-locations-censusUS-censusSwedish-documents-graves
under each category I have further 'split' by location or year.
In some cases I have over 50 in a category.
This way I can copy a 'photo' from a print screen, save with paint, then add
that to the new event screen, changing windows back and forth. It took me a
while to formalize the process and simplify it. I no longer use my written
instructions, but reccomend creating something to assist your process until

Yes.  It's possible to do that with pretty much any program - you just reduce
the size of the 2 (or more! - I know someone who habitually works with about 4
windows open at the same time!)  windows and position them as you want.

Certainly if the website allows copying of text you can paste it into a field
in Legacy, but you can't do that with pictures.  With pictures you have to save
them to your hard drive or some other local storage device from where Legacy
can access them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Features

2009-10-23 Thread Robert Carneal USA
I do this for cemeteries. Several cemeteries are interred by date.
That is, they start in one corner or one spot, and from there
spiraled outwards. I know Sherry already said this, but what I do
here is enter everyone I have for that cemetery. Since I need it
sorted by BURIAL date, I open it up in GenViewer and make a copy for
the spreadsheet. Then in Excel (or whatever spreadsheet I am using),
I make my burial date my primary sort, secondary sort is the name,
and ternary sort based on the birth date. I don't know what I would
do without GenViewer! I have the full version of GenViewer, but don't
forget GenViewer Lite is free; though I don't know what features are
deactivated for the Lite version.

Basically, what you are asking for is a fourth way to sort the names.
You can suggest it by going to the Legacy Home Tab, and on the left
side under Support, there is a line there to "Suggest a new feature."
That is not a guarantee the developers will put it in, though, but
they will see the suggestion.

Thanks.

Yes, it is more dificult I recognized that.

However - if the programmers are already doing a secondary sort on dob (the
primary sort being on Name - and Sherry from Legacy said that Legacy does the
secondary automatically when you are sorting by name for all names that are the
same) - they obviously have the code available to sort the dates (even the
non-standard ones) so that makes it pretty trivial to this programmer mind.

And dates taken from the GRO are definitely non-standard, being entered as

Definitely *not* a trivial exercise for the programmers :-)

I have used Legacy for 3 years now ( switched from FTM) and cannot imagine
using any other type of software program (as of today anyways). I have been
extracting records from some parishes in Germany and would have been utterly
lost without the Search tools. There are all sorts of problems with these
old church records but with the Search tools I can get around many
obstacles. Also, being able to identify locales has been simplified with the
Geo Loacation Database. My latest discovery has been being able to utilize
ALL 9 tags instead of only 3. In the Index view I have altered the columns
and it can include all of my tags which is important to me as I use them
all. Regards Robert

Yes. I frequently have Legacy visible on 1/2 screen, the Swedish online pages
on the other, and the program Paint, and the 'photos subdirectory' hiding on
the bottom, to check which pages I already have, then copy new pages using the
Swedish copy numbering system.

Another available option is to download GEDxlate from
http://www.gedmagic.com/GEDxlate.htm

=== quote from site =

What is GEDxlate?

GEDxlate quickly and easily translates genealogy data from standard
GEDCOM format into MS Access dB (*.mdb), MS Excel Worksheet (*.xls),
comma delimited (*.csv), and text file (*.txt) formats. Pick a GEDCOM
file to translate; select which fields you want to include in your dB,
spreadsheet, csv, or txt file; choose an output format and file name to
save the translated data in; and you're there!

 end quote =

It is free and I use it extensively for analyzing data. Once you
convert your info to excel or access format you can manipulate it as you
wish. It is a perfect companion to Legacy and it is free.

There is no single genealogy program that will do everything that
everyone desires, although Legacy comes closest. The use of these
external programs will probably be necessary for the foreseeable future
and I will take advantage of them as needed. This is by no means a
criticism of Legacy, which remains the finest program of its type ever
created.

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Features

2009-10-22 Thread Deb Yarbrough
I, too, would love the ability to sort by dob, cd & dod. --why not sort on
any field shown in your "view".. or maybe you'd have to create a "view" with
given fields, and one or two "index" fields... since access based, could
possibly be done, but the database would become gianormous and each person
added would increasingly add to the database and indices!!
Another thing I'd like to see is the possibility to see *ALL* alternate
names from the merge screen, and the possibility to "delete" said names from
the merge screen. However, I realize that this is an option that would
serve very few, and only occasionally, so I am plugging away at fixing my
database after a large merge from someone who used a program that added
surname as well as given/surname as alternate names!!

I've been using Legacy since v2, and my database is now rather large. Abt 2
years ago, I had the brainstorm of downloading an online database to which I
and others had been adding data (and sources)... as well as another one sent
to me by someone using FTM. I have been spending almost all of my genealogy
time merging, deleting and cleaning the old databases... I have on my to do
list... creating to do lists for individuals, converting and cleaning
sources, notes and events.. (and making them uniform by source/event type)

Not a big undertaking I may be done by year 2100

I'm with you on sorting names by dob; it's one of the two relatively small
FTM features that I miss. For now I send a GEDCOM from Legacy to an old

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Features

2009-10-22 Thread Chick Lewis
This has been discussed before, (Things I Would Like to See thread)
however, I will recap for those interested. Comparing individuals by
birth date rather than name will sometimes reveal the existence of an
un-connected individual with a different name or name change.
The ability to sort on birth date is a proven tool that is available
in most genealogy programs.

Rebecca Williams gave a good example: Suppose you have a Thomas
Hughes b. 16 Jan 1725 and a T. Wilson Hewes b. 16 Jan 1725. You would
see at once the possibility they may be the same person. If there
were many names in a family that began with the letters Ha, He, Hi,
Ho, or Hu, the Hewes and Hughes surnames might not sort close enough
together to see this connection.

In another example, I had a David Kerido and a floater Dave Crudo in
my data base, both with close, but not exactly the same birth dates.
When I sorted the index on birth date, the two names were in close
proximity and the similarity was evident. Upon further investigation
they turned out to be the same person. Someone suggested using the
wildcard search for the name Querido. That would never turn up either
Kerido or Crudo. However, those two names with similar birth dates
stood out when the index was sorted on birth date.

On one occasion I came across a name that wasn't even close to the one
I was looking for, but I recognized it as a family name. Further
investigation found that person was living with a relative and using
their name. Subsequent records proved that person was the missing
ancestor.

Some cultures use the mother's maiden name as the family name and as
you trace back in time you will find that they are sometimes
interchanged. Surnames can also change from country to country and in
many places didn't even exist before 1800. When tracing Jewish
ancestry it gets even more complicated and multiple surnames may be
found in the same family. I have seen cases where two brothers had
different surnames.

The birth date sort in FTM is a simple click of a button. Legacy
sorts on RIN, First or Surname. Why not add birth date? Someone
suggested it can be done in Legacy using the search function, but this
is terribly time consuming. Someone else suggested using the Legacy
add-on, GenViewer. That may work but why use an add-on to perform a
simple task that could easily be part of the program?

For now, I am doing the same thing that Kirsten does. I gedcom back
to FTM when I need to sort on birth date.

RE: [LegacyUG] Favorite Features

2009-10-22 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Michele:

A dob sort is one other way to view the Name List and check for duplicates.
I have a spider web of several hundred Acadians and it's easy to miss common
ancestors in all that. It's a quick way to check for blank dob fields
(which can also be done with a search), it's one more way to scan for
odd-looking entries, and I like to open and sort a GEDCOM by dob before
posting online to make sure I haven't accidentally included someone I
shouldn't have.

None are big deals, and wild horses couldn't drag me back to FTM for data
entry, but it would be handy to have a dob sort capability within Legacy.

I'm not sure what the purpose of sorting by birthdate would be. Are you
aware that Legacy has a calendar creator under reports - all reports?
Perhaps that would meet your needs.

I don't know about Chick, but I'm missing the ability to sort the entire

alphabetically at the top of the list followed by the others in date order.
It's pretty handy, but certainly not a deal-maker.

Two Legacy features that I especially like are:

#1. Family View: If the *highlighted* individual has siblings, it is easy
to rotate through the brothers/sisters by merely left-clicking on the
adjacent thin *vertical* space in the *middle* of the Family View.

#2. Family View: If the *highlighted* individual has more than one spouse,
it is easy to rotate through the husbands/wives by merely left-clicking on
the adjacent thin space in the *left/right* margins of the Family View.

#1 and #2 above allow one to quickly go through family members who are in
the same census, for example, and add the Census Event to each of them
using the Clipboard. (I use a census, please *no* hisses or boos, as an
event and thus can quickly add the Census Event, via the Clipboard, to all
siblings who are in the same census.)

Off-hand, I can't think of any features that really peeve me, just a few

submitted by me or others as enhancement suggestions. There are
probably quite a few features I never use, but just because I personally

hm - that might go down better with people if you did both at once that
is

"What I really love about Legacy is." "What I don't like about Legacy
is" (or "I really wish Legacy could do this." - so that people
would see both at once, and not get thinking it was a bad programmer.

As a programmer (not from Legacy) it can definately be helpful knowing what
people would like, or what they find complicated about a program, or
improvements and although there is a way to put in suggestions (which I
have) - sometimes a discussion can bring out a better way to do
something on the other hand, I could see how a "negative" thread could
upset people, or could give new people the wrong impression about a great
program.

Besides the rotating through spouses (and thanks, I didn't know about the
rotating through siblings!) I love the view 1/2 kids. In Family view -
right-click on a child (any), and then from the menu that comes up, select
Vies - Show 1/2 kids. You will now see any kids that have one parent from
the family (and a parent not in the family being viewed) - along with the
name of the other parent in brackets.

RE: [LegacyUG] Favorite Features

2009-10-20 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
OK, just thought that I'd chime in here and list some of my favorite
features. I like how this thread is going and certainly hope that the
programmers are aware of what we are all listing. In other words, if the
public likes it and it ain't broke, please don't fix it.

I switched from FTM to Legacy because of the HTML generating capabilities. I
liked the "report-like sentence structure" that Legacy would generate. And
yes, I'm aware of the dozens of "GEDCOM-to-HTML" shareware programs that are
out there. I've tried most of them, paid for a few, but was mostly
disappointed in the long run. Most had a tendency to create thousands of
small files that carried the note and source info. Now here is something
else I found out by not reading the fine print. The host for my web site
advertised 10 gigs of storage space but I found out the hard way that there
was also a finite limit on the total number of files. Go figure! I was only
half-way through FTPing my files up to the server when I got an "out of
storage space" error even though I had moved less than 5 megs of files. And
while Legacy's HTML capabilities are pretty basic, its been said many times
over that this is a genealogy program and not a HTML editor. I generally use
Front Page (now called Microsoft Expression Web) to add the additional bells
and whistles to the HTML.

And like most others, I discovered that the clipboard for events and sources
is an absolute plus for this program. The minute I discovered its uses, I
was really sold on the program and haven't looked back since. There are many
other outstanding features but this one is the "clincher".

Brian in CA

PS - I'm sure those at Millennia are taking note of this thread, or at least
probably already know what's on our mind (or at the very least SHOULD know
what's on our minds.) But I've often wondered if we dared to start a new
thread called "The least liked features of Legacy". I've come close to that

Not exactly a favourite feature, but something well worth pointing out
to the new users of Legacy is the Tutorial included in the Help system.
This takes you through everything you need to know to get up and running
in Legacy and as it is broken down into bit-size lessons and demos you
can take it stage by stage and run through it again when you need to
revise a particular topic.

I know other LUGgers speak highly of the training videos - I have only
seen the free ones and previews available on the Legacy site and I agree
they are excellent, too but the Tutorial is all free!
