Re: [MBZ] Bathtub and bell curves

2007-08-04 Thread Tom Hargrave
Robert,

"Clear as mud".

Understanding MTBF is the reason I searched for a 70's Corvette with about
50,000 miles on the clock when I decided to buy one. Even though my Vette is
a 1977, I know that all of the major modules and assemblies are in decent
shape. The rubber parts are another story.

Mercedes on the other hand are much better designed & I have no problem
purchasing one with 200,000 miles on the clock, providing everything (and I
mean everything) works when I buy the car. I understand that some assemblies
are approaching end of life but I also know that quite a few have been
replaced & quite a few will go another 100,000 miles or so. I also don't
have a problem with putting a Mercedes with 200,000 miles on the clock on
the road, but only after I've gone over all of the systems.

Compare the 1977 Corvette to the 3 - 5 year water heater & a same year
Mercedes to the 12 year water heater discussed earlier.

By the way, a bell curve & bathtub curve do not complement each other. A
bathtub curve tends to be more one sided, with most failures on the tail
end. A bell curve is balanced.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Subject: [MBZ] Bathtub and bell curves

The question of how long a light bulb lasts is used in several introductory
books on statistics.

How long does a light bulb last? A truthful answer is "It varies." But
people tend to want a single number. Maybe the average.

As applied to this problem, the bell curve plots bulb life (in hours or
some
unit of time) against number of bulbs in the sample that last so long
before
failing. The bathtub curve plots bulb life against number of bulbs failing
at some
particular life. The curves are something of complements of each other; at
any
life the two add up to 100% of the bulbs in the experiment.

Some fail out of the box.or early, then few fail, then at the end, all
survivors
finally fail.

Conversely, only a few last a short time, many last something like
the average life, and only a few last into light bulb old age.

Clear as mud?

[MBZ] Finally...Interlock Unlocked

2007-08-04 Thread B Dike
All,

It took a while, but I was finally able to disable the disfunctional starter
interlock on the 74 240D. The wiring diagram for the interlock circuitry shows
a rat's nest of switches, lines and connectors. The actual interlock relay is
embedded inside the 10-pin box under the dash. But it can be defeated by
grounding pin 85 in the starter relay on the firewall above the starter (as
suggested by a fellow lister). Very simple. The car can be started again, and
everything appears to be working fine.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] Front Loading Washers (was Re: Tools and Quality)

2007-08-04 Thread OK Don
The amount of use makes a difference - just like miles on a car.
We're on our second Maytag - and I've had to repair both of them. With
four kids, we've washed a LOT of clothes. Both washers had seals
damaged by stuff from kids pockets that got into them, then the water
either corrodes what's left of the sealing rings - letting grease into
the washer, or the water mixes with the grease in the tranny and kills
it. Maytag was purchased by one of the "Chevy's" of appliances, so we
won't be buying another one. Our Maytag drier is 29 years old, and
sounds like it's on it's last legs. I'll be buying both soon - this OT
discussion is timely - probably an expensive front loader after
reading all the comments.

Your leak comment sounds about right... IIRC, the computer is smart
enough to know that there aren't enough EGR gases being recirculated
(from the EGR valve or the throttle not working) to cut off boost (by
opening up the wastegate at all times).

Anything can fail but the question is can it be repaired economically.
Strange how people put up with cars breaking down but if a washing
machine decides to go down after 6 years people are in shock.

Our Miele spins at 1100 rpm, can be set to 600 but don't know why.
Has water saving cycles and all the other stuff, which is not bad
considering it was the base model.
Anyway we just bought a new fridge and I have to modify the kitchen to
fit the blasted thing in, that's what happens when you take the missus
along. You end up with a big fridge and an empty wallet.

It is interesting to note if there is a backlash against big money
sports, with the average fan being marginalised to a being a cash cow
who has no real ownership of the sport.
It's early days but there seems to be a growing number of football
supporters abandoning the big league in favour of the local competition
because the local competition is making an effort to be family friendly
rather than being treated like cattle at the big game.

Depends what you are after, if you just want a machine then anything
will do but if you are interested in the long term then you have to look
at machines that are servicable. We have had Miele machines in our
family for decades and while they are more expensive than Asian brands,
they are build to be repairable.

Re: [MBZ] [ SPAM ] RE: 78 240D Making Odd Noise

2007-08-04 Thread LWB250
I had a 108 one time (1970 280S) that had the absolute
worst rumbling sound in the front end. It was coming
from the left front (driver's side) and was most
certainly a bad wheel bearing.

I changed the LF wheel bearing and adjusted to spec
with a dial indicator.

The front end still rumbled.

I went over that thing with a fine tooth comb and was
never able to pin it down. A month after I bought it
someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse on it, and
I sold it with full disclosure.

Found out a few weeks later it was the *right* front
wheel bearing that was bad, but for soime reason the
noise transmitted through the suspension and sounded
like it was coming from the left front.

Lesson learned.

Check the turbo and the waste gate control (electronic? If so, the
transducer is likely bad, no boost!)

Make sure you have good fuel delivery to the IP, too -- the hoses on
the suction side can crack and leak air in -- lotsa knock and lousy

Bad center u-joint sounds like a bad muffler, but varies with road
speed independent of engine speed. Cure is driveshaft replacement,
it's much cheaper to get a used shaft than replace the bearing ($650
last time I heard for the repair). Used shaft is about $100.

Check for vibration at the carrier -- just aft of the center of the
driver's seat on the tunnel.

A bad carrier bearing makes a grinding noise.

[MBZ] 78 240D Making Odd Noise

2007-08-04 Thread LarryT

Howdy -
My 240D has a sound like something is running besides the engine - like
a roar that is not dependant on the speed of the engine but *is* dependant
on the speed of the car. My car has a solid fan attachment (no viscous
clutch) and I've replaced the motor mounts which cured a lot of strange
noises.

The roar gets louder as I speed up and quieter as I slow down. What do
bad center bearings sound like? I've had bad u-joints on other cars and
know what they felt like - and this ain;t like that. Any reason I should
expect the noise to be the same?

I must be rambling - never had a problem like this before -

Any ideas?

I would suggest you ask Rusty. Either send him an email today or use
Instant Messaging on Monday - he'll be happy to help - just ask if he knows
which lasts the longest. Likely they are comparable and the price is the

Don't forget to buy a new gasket - they don't typically come with the pump.

Re: [MBZ] AC bungholery

2007-08-04 Thread Peter Frederick
Way low on freon -- high side at 70F and 1500 rpm with compressor
engaged should be about 250 psi. The other choice is a bad compressor,
but you should have more pressure than that in the low side if the
compressor is bad. May have a bad low pressure cutout switch (or it's
wired around) too.

The evaporator can be cleaned by removing the blower and spraying it
with evaporator cleaner (don't use anything that can corrode aluminum).
Likely the screed over it is packed solid with crap.

You do NOT want to remove the evaporator if it is not indeed
leaking.

Pull a vaccum on the supply line. If it won't hold, the transducer is
toast. I'd replace both of them, it's been known to fix the problem
right up (or all three -- EGR, flap, and turbo boost control).

If any one of the three is bad, the computer goes to "limp" mode, self

[MBZ] AC bungholery

2007-08-04 Thread Zeitgeist
So, my AC ('87 300TD) seems to be experiencing multiple failure modes. One
is the weak output of the fan. The other is the weak output of cooling. I
suspect the former is due to clogged evaporator coils, which apparently
can't be rectified short of a complete dash removal. The fan appears (by
the sound of it) to be working at normal speeds.

The latter issue is more mystifying. Here are the symptoms:

   - Low side readings = 50 psi
   - High side readings = 65 psi
   - Vent temps = 50 degrees @ ~70 degrees ambient
   - Compressor engages, yet doesn't cycle off and on as I'd suspect if
there were a low charge level.
   - sight glass is cloudy

Any thoughts? Any at all?

2007-08-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well, I check the alda line, it seems fine. On this car is a little
different than the 91. It comes out of the intake, goes to a Y, one of
the Y's go to the ALDA, the other Y goes to a pressure sensor by the
battery. Does not have the cutoff switch in between. I pulled the
codes and it had one for EGR actuator/transducer something or other, one
for rack position sensor, and one for starter ring gear sensor. Cleared
the code for EGR, but no matter what I did I couldnt get the other 2 to
clear, even after unhooking the battery for a while. I also noticed
while idling, if you run the engine ad various RPM, the flap deal on the
turbo outlet never moved at all. On any other 2.5 I have seen, it seems
to move back and forth at various times if you rev it up and/or down
while sitting there. No code set for that but something doesnt seem
right. I do know when my other one I had, if you had any sort of vacuum
leak you had zero power. I suspect there is a leak somewhere.

Anybody know how to test all those switchover valves, and vacuum
transducers/actuators whatever they are over on the passenger side?

Re: [MBZ] Shocking

2007-08-04 Thread LarryT
As with others I highly recommend the Bilsteins - to see the difference hold
your used Bilstein next to your new Monroe - like I did several years ago
when finances required I buy the heaper Monroes. The chrome shaft on the
Bilsteins is about twice as large (diameter) as the Monroe - same for the
body of the shock - the Bilsteins are built much more substantially and
their lifespan proves the point.

Buy the Bils once every 15 years or so (usually more) Vs. buying Monroes
every 3-5 years.

It's just like buying a good MB* and it will be the cheapest car you'll ever
own, the Bilsteins are the same. (*= within the constraints of buying a
used diesel in excellent condition with complete repair history - it'll last
a lifetime and cost very little to drive/maintain)

There are two other reasons why the "solar cells on a mountaintop" people
love Stabers. All the mechanical parts are off-the-shelf items, you can
buy bearings, etc, wherever such items are sold. But the most important
reason for off grid homeowners to own a Staber washer is that you can
get it in a low voltage DC version, and run it directly off your battery
without using an inverter. Someday I'd like to visit the Staber factory
in Ohio and see what their washers look like. It's the only top loading,
horizontal axis washer that I know of. I assume there's some kind of a
sealed door in the drum so you can load it.

Five years ago my mom was looking for a new washer.
I wanted to get her a front loader for a gift, good thing I asked
her some questions, turned out that women old enough to collect
Social Security don't always like to bend over. She wanted a top
loader. Eventually I found the Fisher-Paykel GWL10, which was
only $699 list, had to pay about $650 for it. Kind of like a
Whirlpool Calypso with an agitator. Does a waterfall cycle in
the beginning with very little water, and ends with a 1000rpm
spin cycle.

I visited the dealer recently, he had an old GWL10 that needed
a new computer board. He told me I could have it for $150 after he
fixes it. I'm happy. Now all I have to do is find a decent $100 dryer.
When the washer spins like an extractor, the dryer isn't as important.

i had a local SF Bay Area indy tell me last week he doesn't buy 123 diesels
that aren't running and in perfect condition anymore; the dearth of
"Berkeley hippies" buying them to run what they think are going to be free
biofuels has resulted in a glut of cars that have been trashed by bad
fuel(s) and lack of proper maintenance... that combined with the increases
in prices of parts and decreasing availability has made the 123s much less
desirable.
at least that's *his* story... and that was just after he told me he
sold his rather beat daily driver TD in a heartbeat when someone offered him
$5 out of the blue for it, complaining that he hadn't been able to
find one in 6 months of shopping. ;-*

Kaleb's list is much better than that. The pictures won't be sent with

i had a local SF Bay Area indy tell me last week he doesn't buy 123
diesels that aren't running and in perfect condition anymore; the dearth
of "Berkeley hippies" buying them to run what they think are going to be
free biofuels has resulted in a glut of cars that have been trashed by
bad fuel(s) and lack of proper maintenance... that combined with the
increases in prices of parts and decreasing availability has made the
123s much less desirable.
at least that's *his* story... and that was just after he told me he
sold his rather beat daily driver TD in a heartbeat when someone offered
him $5 out of the blue for it, complaining that he hadn't been able to

[MBZ] Bathtub and bell curves

2007-08-04 Thread Robert Bigham

It would seem that if the diesel that's supposed to get to the cylinders
doesn't, that you would have less power.

Replace the seals, see what happens, and then look elsewhere if necessary.

Your maytag failed after 6 years? My grandmother always had a maytag
washer/drier. Must be front he 60's. It was still going strong when she
died several years ago. My dad still uses it and its going strong. I have
had my maytag top loaded for about 8 years. Its still going great although I
wouldnt mind getting rid of it go get a front load washer/drier.

The commercial ones probably run for an equivalent amount of time! Just
find a laundry mat thats going out of business ;)

I think the Kenmore/Frigidaire washers are based on a commercial design
(or they really look like it anyway) so it might be easier to find a
gasket for them.

oh yea, also those front loaders get more water out on the final spin so you
do not have to run the drier as long, saves electricity/gas there.

Than with _your_ top loader. I looked into buying a
Fisher Paykel when it looked like I was going to have
to replace our washer. It's a top loader, yet at the
time got clothes the driest of anything. Didn't
have to do it then, I've been able to keep our 1974
Kenmore running.

I doubt that _any_ front loader could be kept running
this long. Lack of availability of the custom door gaskets
alone would probably guarantee this.

I haven't seen those new nuclear-powered driers yet.
Or are you merely exporting your carbon footprint to
a different neighborhood? Unless you've switched to
the clothesline. :-)

Re: [MBZ] Front Loading Washers (was Re: Tools and Quality)

2007-08-04 Thread LWB250
This was something I didn't realize, either. In fact,
my drying times are lower because the clothing comes
out of the washer much dryer that with a top-loader.

I will say that my purchase was precipitated by the
failure of my 6 year old Maytag, which blew the
transmission. There was no reason for attempting a
repair, as the parts cost alone made it prohibitive.

That being said, I did not have a $1000 budget for a
washing machine, either. I did what research I could
in the limited time I had, and found that there are a
number of sub-$1000 machines that are as good as the
more expensive ones. The main differences were a
lower capacity (but only in tenths of a cubic foot)
and fewer cycles.

I ended up buying a GE front loader at Lowe's for
slightly less than $700 along with rebated delivery
and a $50 gift card. I just got my first water bill
with the washer in use for a whole month, and it went
down over 30%. In Florida that's a pretty substantial
savings, as we get gouged on water in this part of the
stae due to restrictions.

I just changed over from a gas water heater (propane
here, we don't have natural gas) so I should be seeing
a BIG drop in my gas bill. In fact, it should drop to
zero, since this was the last gas appliance outside of
the fireplace and spa heater that we have.

 Bill,
It needs a tranny, exhaust and bumpers. Other than that it drives
 nice,
brakes are good, runs great, hydro susp. works. I only drove it for
 a
 week
and the tranny went on me. Has some cancer but not too bad. Fuel
 tank
needs cleaned out or better yet replaced as it is clogging the fuel
 filter.
That's about what i know about it.

There is more than one point to their efficiency. One is use of less
water. Another is spinning faster to extract the water more thoroughly,
which means you run your dryer less to get the clothes dry. Unless you
dry your clothes on a line (hard to do in the winter), you save that way,
too.

Buy LG from Home Depot (or buy.com believe it or not)

We just bought a pair to replace a 10 year old top load/dryer, and my
 wife
researched every make and model before she decided on the LG. They have
 the
best customer satisfaction and I must say, we are very impressed with
 them.
Not only do they save water, they save detergent, and do a better job.

We paid about $50 a month for water, and the washer was probably half
 that.
The front load uses 1/3 the water of top load, so 50/2 = $25, 25/3 =
 $8.33,
or a savings of $16.67 each month. That over the next 10 years is over
$2,000, and that is more then we paid for the washer and dryer. Our
 bills
come every three months, so I will soon know if these numbers work out.

Mercedes Content and added bonus - the washer and dryer cost more then
 at
least 3 Mercedes I have bought, so I have leverage next time I see a
 deal.

Re: [MBZ] Shocking

2007-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond

Think so? I'd say the wagon. I've never had a 124 wagon but my 123 wagon was
the most comfortable ride I've ever had.

Of course my wagon was a disaster but when it was running good it was the most
pleasurable car to drive I've ever had.
My wife agrees, someday we're planning on driving across the US and I've
already compiled a short list of possible cars
116 SD
123 TD - either turbo or manual shift n/a. A friend has a 4spd and says its a
hoot. I haven't driven it yet.
aircooled VW microbus.

Obviously one of these things is not like the others...
In any event there would be a fairly big money outlay for the vehicle to make
sure it was in tip top shape before the trip.

Any opinions, I'm thinking to buy a mid price range car in decent shape with a
few issues and spend a few months and some probably not inconsiderable cash
making it perfect.
As opposed to buying something more expensive that might have hidden flaws that
we'd discover on the road...

The W116 is the ultimate car for suckering a tailgater over a rough

It's not a stunt you want to pull in a W201.034, mine rides like a

The best long term one would be a Speed Queen (non-electronic), but
they require attendance (they hop all over the place if the load
doesn't balance on the spin cycle) and are expensive -- $1500 last time
I looked a couple years ago.

I ended up with a Bosch from Lowe's -- I believe they still carry the
brand, but not at all stores. Again, large and expensive ($1300), but
my oh my what a difference in clean! Neptunes are good IF you can keep
them in a low humidity enviroment (the electronics are on the bottom,
duh!) -- damp environment equals burned out boards, which can get
expensive.

I especially like the simplicity of the Bosch controls -- a dial for
temp and agitation cycle, a couple of buttons for spin speed, and
that's it. Far easier than teaching my 80 year old mother how to use
one of the overly-complicated touch-screen types!

I've been quite happy.

What brand/model did you go with? I'll be in the market for one very

 seems to

Re: [MBZ] Tools and Quality

2007-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond

My parents replaced their 35 year old refridgerator last year and have been
stunned by the savings.
Interestingly it seems like the new fridge cycles more often but has a shorter
cycle. Definately uses like 50% of the power...

On waterheaters I'd imagine the new ones are MUCH better insulated than even 10
years ago and more than that ago "fuggetaboutit". Remember when people were
setting their houses on fire wrapping hotwater heaters in insulation?

Yay forced hot water heat. Turn on the tap, the furnace fires up and hot water
is there... Of course it means I'll burn a tank of oil in the summer but I'm
okay with that.

I guess I look at the difference in cost amortized
over the life of the appliance. That being
considered, you're talking about less than $10/year
for the difference, which isn't really significant in
my mind.

That also doesn't factor in the cost savings in energy
efficiency. While I can't imagine water heater
technology has gotten to the point of really major
gains in efficiency over the last 10 years, with other
appliances it is definitely a consideration.

The house is just about 10-1/2 years old, so some of
the appliances are ready to be turned. I just cut
about 35% off my water bill by going to a front
loading washing machine last month. I can't begin to
imagine what a difference it will make when we replace
our almost 15 year old side by side refrigerator in a
couple of months

Re: [MBZ] Front Loading Washers (was Re: Tools and Quality)

2007-08-04 Thread Sunny Letot
I also did a bunch of research about three years ago and chose the top Kenmore
front loader.

To answer your question about getting clothes clean, it does so quite well.
It tosses your clothes throught the soapy water, which is more like hand
washing. Clothes get quite clean, they last longer (not as much wear and tear
from the agitator), and as has already been noted, you use a LOT less
detergent. You'll also save energy, since the clothes are drier coming out of
the washer (the spin is FAR more efficient) so you don't need the dryer to run
as long.

We've had no problem with leaking except once when a visitor didn't believe
me about the detergent and poured in more than she would've for a top loading
machine! That WILL run a small amount of water out on the floor through an
overflow, which is not actually a leak. It was amazing how much soap remained
in our clothes from the top load we used to have -- and we weren't soap fiends
by any means -- we found that the first few loads of clothes after we changed
washers had enough soap in them to clean without adding more!

The only down-side is that the cycle takes longer, but we've adjusted to
that. On some washers, once you start the cycle, you can't open the door to add
forgotten items, but look around for ones that don't limit you in that way --
they're out there.

valuable and the most perishable of all our possessions." John Randolph

Me, baby, me! I got my kit yesterday with the hat, stress reliever, and
rebate form. The oil is going into my Civic, my girl's Cherokee (stick
shift!) and any friends who need oil changes.

Thanks Mike, but it sounds like the distance and repairs put it out of
bounds for my needs.

Bill,
It needs a tranny, exhaust and bumpers. Other than that it drives nice,
brakes are good, runs great, hydro susp. works. I only drove it for a week
and the tranny went on me. Has some cancer but not too bad. Fuel tank
needs cleaned out or better yet replaced as it is clogging the fuel filter.
That's about what i know about it.

I am in Montour Falls, NY.

Mike

Re: [MBZ] Front Loading Washers (was Re: Tools and Quality)

2007-08-04 Thread The Wakin's
Buy LG from Home Depot (or buy.com believe it or not)

We just bought a pair to replace a 10 year old top load/dryer, and my wife
researched every make and model before she decided on the LG. They have the
best customer satisfaction and I must say, we are very impressed with them.
Not only do they save water, they save detergent, and do a better job.

We paid about $50 a month for water, and the washer was probably half that.
The front load uses 1/3 the water of top load, so 50/2 = $25, 25/3 = $8.33,
or a savings of $16.67 each month. That over the next 10 years is over
$2,000, and that is more then we paid for the washer and dryer. Our bills
come every three months, so I will soon know if these numbers work out.

Mercedes Content and added bonus - the washer and dryer cost more then at
least 3 Mercedes I have bought, so I have leverage next time I see a deal.
