Yes. If you dig down the directory Adobe 7/Browser/intellinux,
you'll find you'll find a script : "install_browser_plugin". Run
it for every browser you have.

Java isn't on the MDK CD's due to license problems. You can
download a working java from Sun.

However, if you're a member of Mandrake Club (you really should be)
you can download the java executable. It's called j2re (Java2
Runtime Environment). If you have set up your sources for Mandrake
Club, just as root : # urpmi j2re. The latest version is :
j2re-1.4.2_07-1mdk (assuming you run 10.1).

Beware, it's a 22 MB download.

Yes, but installing with urpmi gives an error, something with curl
being in the way. Instead, use this :

# rpm -i --nodeps AdobeReader

And everything works well.

Did you create that "Linux Stuff" directory in Konqueror ?
If so, the command shell probably won't see it. The shell doesn't
like spaces in file names.

You could try to rename that directory to i.e. "Linux_Stuff" or some
such.

Good heavens, Mikkel. How did you find that ?

I'll dive into it ASAP.

Now, just don't let us get carried away : I wanted some method to
defrag this crappy Microsoft FAT32 file system. WindowsXP can't do
it. Neither can Linux. So, I figured that backing up the entire
content, re-formatting and restoring might be the way to go.

But as the file system seems to be "hard coded", and I know that
Linux can "fix anything", I'll download your Floppy-CD, lean back
and watch the battle

Have a nice week-end...

Thanks Mikkel, but you see I just don't have a Windows boot disk.
Neither have my daughter, who has a WinXP box. I tried to figure
out a way to let her Windows (DOS) format the external harddisk,
but gave it up, 'cause there is no point in it : I still can't get
a decent file system on it, no matter what. Maybe NTFS is usable
but then I can't write to it from my Linux box, the whole idea
being to use it as a transport medium and backup between the two
boxes.

Well, I can still use my camera for transport

Here it is (on one line) :

/dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto
umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users
0 0

Of course I know about the umask=0022 being stupid, but hitherto I
haven't found a way to let it stay =0.

Each time my daughter uses the drive, I have to unmount it, edit
fstab to umask=0 and remount. Then she can use it. Been nagging
me for months with the other "removables" like camera, mp3 players
and memory sticks. - And : whacking supermount doesn't change a
thing.

If I ever find the daemon that changes my fstab against my will,
I'll fetch my 9 mm Neuhausen...

OK Harm, the device is there as /dev/sda1. But it is "untouchable"
by any attempt to create a real file system. It works with FAT32
and that is that

Well, fdisk could "see" the /dev/sda1 but report this :

-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] kaj]# fdisk /dev/sda1

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 19928.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

So, as I understand it, there's no idea in having a 160 GB disk when
only a 5% of it is usable...

Thanks a lot, Mr. Geek - what a lot of options :-)

Funny thing is, Diskdrake doesn't color the /dev/sda1 meaning it
can't see the FS type. And, yes, this is a Maxtor device, works
fine apart from this issue. Now, I'll play with your suggestions.

Yes, Ed. Diskdrake gives the option to format the drive (/dev/sda1)
but nothing happens. The drive seems to be locked.

The drive is seen OK, but trying to format it with a real file
system is a no go. I'm wondering if someone wrote a defragger for
linux to use on a FAT32 partition ? - It's my impression that
many here have such a partition for their Windows stuff. I'll
google around some. No major problem though, just my

Thanks, Anne. But..eh.. I don't have Windows disk, and even if I

The linux fdisk utility won't let me do anything on the drive.

[newbie] FAT question

2005-03-17 Thread Kaj Haulrich
I've just got my hands on a 160 GB external USB hard disk.
Now, this thing comes preformatted with a FAT32 (vfat) file system.
When I unmount the thing I can't reformat the drive with a decent
file system like ReiserFS, JFS, ext2 or ext3 from be it the MCC or
by hand. I can't even re-partition it with FAT32 ?

So here it goes : will this FAT32 file system become fragmented
over time like any other Windows file system ?

If yes, how to defrag it ?

Or, will I have to move the FS to another drive back-and-forth in
order to defrag ?

TIA

Thanks, Charles. Good advice. I use my camera as a transport medium
between my daughters PC ( with WinXP - not connected to anything
but the power outlet, of course) and my own box. I noticed that
the order of devices is important : my scanner has to be last, the
camera first. The other way around the CPU runs amok, cluttering my
desktop with endless, strange icons. Maybe I'm too lazy to connect
things to the rear of the box ?

I'm certainly not the right person to answer this, but on the other
hand I've been struggling with my USB devices since 10.1 and one
thing I know for sure : you must have udev + udevd + magicdev
running. Possibly hotplug and devfsd as well.

The new user probably is there OK. You can confirm it by looking
for his home directory, like this :

cd /home
ls

then you should se a directory with the new user's name.
However, you haven't set a password. To do this type (as root) :

passwd [username]

Now, exit your root console and type :

su [username]

give the new password, and you are done. The new user will get a
default desktop from /etc/skel, then he can start tweaking and
configuring, change his password and so on

Michel, as far as I understand you want to log in as a new user in
order to see if KDE works, OK ?

If so, just create a new user from a root konsole, like this :

# adduser [username here]

Then you'll be prompted for a new unix password, just choose some
and carry on.

When done, log out of the root session, kill the X server by
pressing and log in as the new user,
choosing KDE .

If the problem is some setting in your old .kde directory, the new
user's KDE will work just fine.

Funny thing is, on my system there's no devfs but nevertheless the
devfsd is running as well as udev :

kaj]$ rpm -qa | grep devfs
devfsd-1.3.25-38mdk
[EMAIL PROTECTED] kaj]$

I have done endless permutations of devfs, devfsd, magicdev, udev,
and supermount, but my USB devices (scanner, external hard drive,
mp3 player and camera) still combat each other in a seemingly
random way. So far I've come to the conclusion that one or two of
those daemons (or is it devils ?) are written by Microsoft :
my /etc/fstab keeps changing each time a USB device gets inserted,
especially the umask=0022 statement. This of course prevents me as
a ordinary user to write to the device. I have to unmount it as
root, edit my fstab to umask=0 and remount. Drives me crazy.

So, if someone here could point us to an explanation, I certainly
would be happy.

Good weekend, all.

Mr. Geek, if you mount your camera as /mnt camera, become root in a
terminal, cd to /mnt and issue the command chmod 777 camera (where
camera can be anything you choose, i.e. removable or whatever).
That will allow you to write, delete etc. directly on the camera.

Beware though, sometimes you won't be allowed to chmod even as root.
In order to bypass that, you'll have to edit your /etc/fstab so
that umask=0 (instead of the default 0022) for the device line.
Save that file, umount the device and mount again.

Now you'll have all permission set drwxrwxrwx which means that root,
yourself and all others can do as they please.

Very good evidence. During a "friendly" visit to Danish Prime
Minister Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen in February, Mr. Gates
threatened to close down his Navision branch here if Denmark didn't
support the EU Software Patents Directive.

http://www.computerworld.dk/default.asp?Mode=2&ArticleID=27060

It's in Danish, but I guess Google can translate it for you.

As it turned out, the blackmail was successful : although our
Parliament mandated the Sec.Trade, Mr. Bendtsen to demand the EU
Council take the matter off the agenda, he didn't. Public scandal
over here. Mr. Bendtsen will have to come out with some very good
explanations next week, being subjected to a hearing in Parliament.
So far, the Patents Directive stands.

You can read a lot more here :

http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20050308084230867

In English, that is.

I have two books standing side to side :
Adolf Hitler "Mein Kampf" and the "EU Constitutional Treaty"
Amazing how hard it is to tell the difference. I found one,
though : This time a mr. W.Gates KBE has replaced a certain
Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach.

Maryse, it seems you live in France. If so, at the referendum, vote

Here's to democracy, EU-style :

http://wiki.ffii.org/Cons050307En

In short : The Microsoft puppet-state Luxembourg denied council
members from Poland, Portugal and Denmark their request to change
the Directive on Software Patent from an A-item to a B-item.

So friends, that was it : forget about software development in

You can get sound from .mp3's .ogg's and from the net etc., but not
from CD ?

If so, maybe you use a CD player like Noatun (the KCDplayer). That
one requires analog input. That means you'll have to check if
there is an audio cable from the device to the motherboard or
soundcard.

Other players like grip or xmms can use digital input and require no
audio cable. I don't think grip needs any additional software, but
xmms does. I think it is called xmms-cdread.

But first, try grip. If no go, report back.

h k, you can let Linux (10.1) read the Windows NT file system but
not (safely) write to it. If it's FAT32, no problems whatsoever.
But Windows cannot write to Linux (I think it can't even "see"
other filesystems than NT and FAT - but I'm not sure, have never
used Windows).

Another solution : If you have the dough, by an external USB hard
disk with at least one FAT32 partition. Should be accessible from
either OS.

Glad you got the other things sorted out.

This EU monster (or is it mobster ?) is the heir of the Soviet

Welcome back, h k...

I didn't realize you were running 6.0, but it induces that nostalgic
feeling in me.

If, by any chance, you are dual-booting Linux and another OS, an
easy way to transfer files is to create an extra FAT32 partition
in the middle to share files. Most OS's can read and write to
FAT32.

Very funny comment indeed, Joe :-(

I Know it may come as an incomprehensible shock to most "Americans"
here, but not everyone living on this tiny planet received the
divine blessing of being brought up in the English/US/Redneck
tongue. Of course that's a big mistake by the Lord. I'll admit that

let Mr. Gutenberg print the Bible in English rather than in
Latin/Greek/Hebrew/Whatever ???

That aside, I feel ashamed when a non-rap-redneck-speaking newcomer
(NRRSN for the Americans) to this list formulates his joy of
becoming a member of the free community, and he is received by
ridiculing comments about misspelling and mis-syntaxing.

A few years ago this list was friendlier.

One of the best things in linux is exactly that.

Allow me an advice :  use the partitioning wisely. If you keep
especially your /home directory on a separate partition you can
keep all your personal files, settings and whatnot forever.  Next
time you install a newer version or do a kernel upgrade, just don't
format that partition and everything will work right away.

A good partitioning scheme for a complete newbie could look like
this :

Make a root partition (/) of about 10 GB
Make a swap partition equal to your RAM size
Make a /home partition on the rest.

...and for the file system, use a journalling one, like ReiserFS,
ext3, XFS or JFS. (no file system for the swap partition).

Of course one can elaborate ad infinitum on this, but IMHO this is
the basics.

Enjoy...

Not quite sure what you mean by "loose the internet connection" ?
In any case, it should not require a complete re-install or upgrade.
If you just unplug the RJ45 and plug it back later, try (as root) :

service network restart
or
ifup eth0
or
ifconfig eth0

If, on the other hand, you loose the connection permanently, I'm out

Thanks, Dennis. Unfortunately Acomdata isn't available here in
Denmark, but Samsung is. And I don't care if I have to mount it
manually (my USB subsystem is severely broken anyway, so I'm used
to it).

Going to Copenhagen over the weekend, so maybe I can dig one up in a

Thanks for the advice, Dennis.

...h k maybe we should send some of our bean counters over, you know
the bigger predator kills the smaller...OTOH I've read somewhere
(Tom Clancy, perhaps ?) that within the American Police killing a
lawyer isn't considered a crime at all... just an idea.

The frame buffer question is a little hairy, depends on your
graphics card, but take a look here :
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/BootPrompt-HOWTO-5.html

In order to display a graphical interface Linux uses a X server.
That's because Linux was designed as a networked system in the
first place. You,ll definitely want one. Mandrake comes with a
server from Xorg nowadays (earlier it was XFree86). It's on your
CD's. At your command prompt (as root) try :

urpmi xorg-x11

h k - Some recommendations : I think you'll need a few applications
until you can get to the GUI. Just urpmi the following :

slocate (a file database). After install, just (as root) run
"updatedb". Then, to find a file, type : "locate ".

mc (Midnight Commander). A Norton-like file manager and editor.
To display your system, type :"mc". To edit a file, type :"mcedit
".

When you have a GUI, you'll need the "drakes". Those are graphical
configuration tools. Their names are descriptive, like
"userdrake", "menudrake", "keyboarddrake" etc..
You can install them by (as root) : "urpmi --fuzzy drake" and then
select the ones you want.

Thanks, h k Where do you live ?

I'm a little confused about what you're trying to do...

(1) Why connect from the CLI ? - If you absolutely must then (as
root) : "ifconfig eth0". That is if you use ethernet as your
interface ? - Otherwise I'd recommend the GUI way for newbies,
just : "mcc", then give root password. Go to Network & Internet
and make your choices.

(2) I don't have Nvidia, but I think you can use it in fb mode
(frame buffer) without the Nvidia drivers until you get things
sorted out.

(3) I don't thing you need to run xconfigurator, only XFdrake.

(4,5,6) You'll need to run XFdrake as root.

Lastly, a dumb question : Do you have a x server running ?

Well, I know that the Extramadura region, the City of Munich, the
City of Bergen and maybe Vienna has moved. On the other hand, the
City of Paris, the City of Newham and the entire British National
Health Service caved in to Microsoft's "offers they couldn't
refuse". Don't know about the French administration, though.

But the problem isn't Linux vs. Microsoft. It's about standards and
patents. When the EU Politburo allows software patents Microsoft
will be able to dictate how the public administration communicates
with citizens : only closed, proprietary protocols will be allowed,
forcing all of us to pay the Microsoft tax. And bye-bye to
software development : can you name me just one invention (aside
from FUD) made by Microsoft ?

There's an excellent article by RMS here :

Well Joe, first and foremost : EUrabia will never be united. On the
contrary, it is decaying rapidly. Exactly like its predecessor,
the Soviet Union.

Secondly, when the present EU with its Central Committee - eh -
Commission and Politburo -eh - Council has vanished into the
scrapyard of history maybe democracy get another chance in some
parts of Europe.

Thirdly, the present Patent issue is just "delayed", not removed.
No matter what the various parliaments (including the EU
Parliament) decides, the Politburo doesn't care one bit.
Microsoft, Siemens, Nokia etc.. still "owns" the Commissars, the
Eurocrats and politicians.

It seems you didn't follow the easy way, namely to "urpmi
mozilla-firefox", but downloaded the tarball from the Mozilla.org
site. In that case, it doesn't matter where the tarball is
extracted, but in order to install it system-wide (i.e. accessible
to all users) you'll have to become root. During this setup you
will be prompted to choose a location for the executables. A
clever choice might be /usr/lib or /usr/local. After the install
completes, run it first time as root (I think that's automatic).

After that, you can add it to your menu with the menu editor.

OK Caroll, maybe "the US Patent Office operates in head-up-butt mode
every day" but do they own the patent ? - And if they've got their
heads where you say, how can they find the head (= john) ?

Anyway, the EU doesn't have a head (=brain) at all but lots of
behinds (big, big ones) so I still believe I can take out a patent
on placing those butts in heads (=johns).

Congratulations and welcome. You did fine.

"DOS" mode is what we call the "CLI", the shell, the konsole, the
terminal etc..

CLI=Command Line Interface. From here you can do everything (well,
almost). For example get to the GUI (Graphical User Interface),
like KDE, Gnome or whatever. Just type :"startx" (without the
quotes).

If you prefer to boot directly into the GUI, just (as root) edit the
file /etc/inittab and change id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault:
That's all.

No, scanners use *sane* (Scanner Access Now Easy) as a backend.
You'll have to install that in order to scan. Furthermore, look

As far as I remember one can add the option :

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you just want to place 6
photos on the document, you can use OpenOffice. Set the page to
A4, select Insert-->Graphics-->From file. Then you can manipulate
the photos around, and when finished, File-->Export as PDF.

If, on the other hand, you want a batch command to do it I'm not
aware of any, but maybe the "mogrify" command in ImageMagick is a
way to go.

Thanks, Ronald. English not being my native tongue, I'd be happy to
make a small contribution to it, only I think it was the Swedish
chef in the Muppet show who invented the term. Later on, when
Microsoft made their homepage inaccessible to the Opera browser,
the Norwegians released a borked browser, remember ?

And, if there is one thing I am not, it is political correct...

Thanks, Ronald & Anne...

Now, for some reason I can't urpmi kdebase-nsplugins.
When doing so it want to install kdebase-kcontrol-nsplugins as well,
but hangs. I've even downloaded those files by hand, but no go.

I have a suspicion, though : I've installed Mozilla 1.7.5 from
Charles' site, so maybe there is some incompatibility issues with
the original Mozilla 1.7.3 from Mandrake ?

I'll fiddle with it until I bork the box...;-)

[newbie] Flashplayer problem

2005-02-07 Thread Kaj Haulrich
When trying to open shockwave flash apps, I can get the movie but no
sound. The error says :

"There was an error loading the module Netscape plugin viewer.
The diagnostics is:
Library files for "libnsplugin.la" not found in paths"

??? - I don't have Netscape installed, only Mozilla, Firefox,
Konqueror and Opera. Same problem.

Furthermore, I can't find this "libnsplugin.la" with locate or rpm
-q --whatprovides libnsplugin.la

Ideas, anyone ?

Sorry for misreading you, Rosemary

The boot process on a relatively new system will start almost
immediately, and the whole install-procedure anywhere between 15
minutes and several hours, depending on the amount of applications
you want to install.

Sometimes it refuses to boot from CD1, in that case try CD2, it'll
prompt you to change disks later on.

BTW two things :

1. please don't post in html. Most people here filter html-messages
out before they get read.

2. please remove your "reply to" field in your mailer. If not,
messages will go to you only, not this list.

Correct. Denmark joined in 1973 after a very marginal "yes"
referendum. And we still keep our distance from much of the EU
rigmarole like military, police, monetary and environmental
matters. I don't know how Sweden fares, but last I looked they
still have their own currency. The brightest of the Nordic states
however is Norway and Iceland, who are still free countries.

Luckily, the EU is about to self-destruct.

Thanks for your comments, Paul. I agree completely. Nowadays we've
got another, effective weapon : the Internet. Some political
parties here wanted to look trendy, so they sat up blogs. This
turned out two be a sword with two, sharp sides. By allowing
comments from average citizens, they exposed themselves to
embarrassing questions and found out they couldn't get away with
their usual blabbermouthed gobbledygook. So, lately, they tend to
think twice and ask people in the knowing before they answer.

Progress, I think.

No, the way I see it our Sec.Trade (Mr. Bendt Bendtsen -
conservative) just voted "yes" in the Politburo, - err - Commission
out of sheer ignorance. Of course a politician doesn't know the
first thing about matters like this, so he just follows the big
guys. And his "advisers" i.e. the bureaucrats in the public
service know even less.

Then, the Central Committee - err - the Parliament made some fuss,
and the matter went back to the Politburo. Here, Poland put in on
hold. Now, the software industry here finally woke up and started
a petition. And many Danes, including myself, wrote emails to the
various political parties warning them of losing voters in case
they lost their minds.

Finally the matter came to attention through newspapers, online
magazines and TV. And the Sec.State (Mr. Moeller) is a lot
brighter than Mr. Bendtsen, so maybe there's hope after all ?

Good one, Bryan !

To supplement : At my hospital, the "techies" are just those
McDonald's rejects. They force me to have Windows on my office PC,
which is impractical for a surgeon (working with a blood pressure
way up in the paint cards makes my hands tremble). So, every
morning I just throw my Knoppix into the cupholder and off we go.
And I still refuse to help my colleagues out when their Windows
boxes turn blue, 'cause I never use the crap.

Now, just to keep the "techies" away from my PC, whenever I leave my
office I just use this "screensaver" (see attached picture).

Congratulation, Julie. -- Just a few remarks :

You did the whole process as root, which isn't necessary. You can
download it anywhere and untar it as a normal, unprivileged user.
Only the final step, running the actual install script should be
done as root if you want all users on the system to use mozilla.

Julie, why are you using webmail ???

While you are in the process of installing Mozilla, just install
mozilla-mail as well. (I think it comes default with the version
from mozilla.org). Or use one of the innumerable mailers that come
with Mandrake (Evolution, KMail, Sylpheed, Thunderbird, mutt, pine,
Opera.. you name it).

Sorry, Julie. Charles has Mozilla 1.7.5 but only for 10.1. I don't
know if it will work on 10.0, but I would try.

If it doesn't, you can always download it from here :
http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/
This version isn't a .rpm, but comes with its own installer.
I would install it in /usr/local or /usr/lib. That way it's easy to
add it to your menu system with the Kmenu editor. If you don't
like it, just delete the mozilla directory.

In order to let others correct me, I re-posted this. Too late I

On Linux no anti virus is needed. The one and only reason to run an
anti virus app on Linux is this situation : You use a Linux box as
a mail server or relay to Windows boxes elsewhere. Then you could
propagate those viruses to them. Linux itself is immune.

And, by the way, please blank out your "reply to" field. If not,

Thanks Tom, that cleared things up for me. Only this remains :

If the first partitions are on the outer ring, this of course gives
a faster spin-by. Now, every platter is divided into sectors or
slices, each containing the same, fixed amount of bytes.
Accordingly, the radial velocity being constant, each sector passes
by the r/w head in exactly the same time. Or, to put in another
way, the bytes on the outer rings are more dispersed than on the
inner ?

My brain hurts. Better have another ;-)

Re: [newbie] What is urpmi?

2005-01-23 Thread Kaj Haulrich
On Monday 24 January 2005 00:47, Mike Chalmers wrote:
> Will someone tell me what urpmi is?

OK, before I fall asleep :

All Open Source software is available as *source code*, i.e. written
text. As such an application can be downloaded to your hard drive.
Then, you face the challenge to compile it. That's not for the
faint-at-heart, because inevitably you'll run into the cumbersome
*dependency hell*. Which means that your desired application needs
other applications in order to compile. - But it is doable.

To make things a little easier, RedHat developed a method called
*rpm* (RedhatPackageManager). This means pre-compiled, binary
collections of files, constituting an application. Of course,
there's a trade-off here : in order to install correctly, the
system must be configured in pre-defined ways, such as per
distribution (Red Hat). But the *rpm* packages do not resolve the
*dependency* problem. This means, that when you install a *.rpm*
you'll have to install other *.rpms* first. The procedure will
tell you which ones. But this is time-consuming.

Then, another distribution (Debian) invented a smarter method :
the *apt-get* procedure. Here, all dependencies are resolved, and
when you type : *apt-get -install * the dependencies
are resolved, downloaded, installed prior to the application
itself. Very smart and efficient. These packages have the
extension *deb*.

Originally, Mandrake was derived from RedHat. The main difference
was the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Where RedHat used Gnome,
Mandrake used KDE. That doesn't matter, it is a question of
personal liking. But Mandrake uses *rpm*.

Now, in order to be as user-friendly as Debian, the Mandrake
developers invented *urpmi*. I honestly don't know what *u* stands
for, but a qualified guess would be *Uniform Redhat Package Manager
Installer* - or some such.

Anyway, it is really, really smart. The only pre-requisite to using
*urpmi* is that you have defined some *sources*. Which means that
you'll have to find some servers to supply you. That's easy as
well :

Go to : http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

And follow instructions EXACTLY. You can choose a multitude of
servers for each category (main, contrib, updates, plf), but not all
servers get updated regularly, so please experiment. As a rule of
thumb : select servers on the other side of the globe, because they
tend to be idle when you are awake ;-)

This accomplished, installing software is as easy as it gets :

1. The GUI method : Just click the
*System-->Configuration-->Packaging-->Install Software*

or (and that's the way we prefer here, because you can see what's
going on) :

2. Open a terminal (Konsole), type *su*, give root-password and
type : *urpmi *.

You'll love it.

Type of conncection (dial-up, DSL, wireless, LAN, direct etc..)
Type of interface (Ethernet, USB, etc.. ?)
Graphical interface (KDE, Gnome, ICEwm, Fluxbox, XFCE etc...)
How did you install ( normally you set up the connection during

What did your ISP tell you about IP (static/dynamic) and DNS ?

Then - please return on another thread with your printer problem.

This puzzles me : I've always believed that a harddisk had its first
cylinders at the center. This should give a slower radial

at the perimeter it should travel a longer distance to the swap
partition.

But maybe I got it all upside/down ?

Jallan, I'm a little late into this thread, but just two things :

1. Please bottom-post (standard here, more readable).

2. You can decompress (unzip) in the command line, by typing :
"gunzip <-options> filename" - that is if you have gzip installed.
Or, in konqueror (if you use KDE), just right-click the file and
choose Action-->Extract here.

You're quite right, Dennis. I'm aware of this, but have tried all
thinkable permutations of those : for example having devfs but not
udev, or hotplug but not supermount. At the moment I don't even
mention devfs in /etc/lilo.conf so I guess it isn't running - at
least it doesn't show up in "services".

At least I now can win the fight every time I mount something, but
it is cumbersome. I'm longing back to the good, old days when
mounting was manual. Nice feeling, to be in charge

And to quote Tom Brinkman (from a thread about k3b) : "every
programmer who allows his application to change important system
files should be taken out and shot". - I agree completely.

Anne, I envy you. Could you please tell me how ? -- Eventually post
your fstab ?

On my system it looks like supermount, devfs, autofs, usbfs and udev
are in a never ending dogfight. Depending on who's the top dog at
any given moment, my system reacts accordingly. In a henhouse at
least you know who's in charge...

At least you're not alone. Some time ago there was a thread about
"the ghost in the machine". It turned out the culprit was
supermount. This devil have plagued us for years now. In 10.1 is
worse than ever, if I may have a say. To me it seems that this
ghost has a will of its own, randomly changing /etc/fstab. For
example my fstab changes in unpredictable ways whenever I insert a
floppy, an USB device like a mp3 player, a scanner or a camera.
More often than not I have to edit fstab by hand in order to get
things right again, but the ghost returns after a short while.

I guess this is the penalty we have to pay for using an otherwise
fine distro.

You can adjust the fonts in Konqueror : Settings --> Configure
Konqueror --> Appearence.

You could try this .

As root, edit your /etc/lilo.conf to
vga=792
save the file, run lilo as root. Logout. Reboot.
