properly. I know that there is still a lot of things to do and to fix, but we need to make a milestone release - there are just too many reason to do it and the main one is psychological - it's really difficult to (re)write code for more than a year and not to make a release, it's just too much of pressure. Hello Maxim, I think the problem is related to a faulty plugin. If a plugin gives an exception while loading, The Bat! removes all the plugins. What it means? Should we wait for new version of Avast plugin? I don't know. Could you please add plugins one by one. After adding each plugin, exit The Bat! and run it again. So you will be able to find a troublesome plugin. You know that this is not the proper way to code a program, right? The correct way would be to show information messages for the user. The ... plugin is faulty, I remove all the plugins. Please fix the... plugin and... Not just removing the plugins. Whatever TB does, the user should be informed about it. And not in a .log file. Hello Mark, KV The correct way would be to show information messages for the user. -8---8- KV And not in a .log file. But using KV information windows. I would love that! So I am guided to a web page that says Unknown problem, or gives a multitude of possible causes, mostly not even closely related, and looks like the instruction leaflet of medicines in which the producing company, not mainly caring about instructing the user, tries to avoid any kind of liability they might incur. For short: the way Microsoft and most major software suppliers work... I have lost hours on those! Most of the time it is impossible to solve the problem with that kind of information and one finally gets helped by Googling for other users' solutions. Or do you really think a software developer should waste his time in cataloging every possible cause of anything that could cause the malfunctioning of his software, even the ones that are extern to that product? If you dont mind, I quote the quoted text in my email: I think the problem is related to a faulty plugin. If a plugin gives an exception while loading, The Bat! removes all the plugins. V I think, this is a totally useless new source of problems (bugs)... V Come on, solve the real issues and leave the cosmetic changes. Dont V even touch them for a half a year. These kind of stuff will not V bring revenue, nor rebuild the respect of TB. There are MANY bugs V that affect the use of TB, this is just another gadget and Ritlabs V and the beta testers waste energy/time/money on it... I agree with you absolutely on this issue. Thank you for pointing it out. :) It was an easy addition and while I wouldn't have asked for it, I am finding it useful. It's the kind of cosmetic improvement that can make the Bat more saleable. What is useful in it? How often you use it to gather some extra information by knowing the number of attachments? Who decides if a feature is useful or not? Common sense. Which is less and less currently. If a client can download email, useful. If a client has a bug in the SMTP auth window, useless. Check it: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=7523 This IS a real problem, people cannot send mails if they dont know the workaround. It would be USEFUL if this problem would be fixed instead of cosmetic changes. I always feel that we should add REAL users to the betalist to refresh the blood. Hello Carsten, Most people on this list will find this perfectly normal, since they are used to it, just like me. But apparently for new users this is not intuitive at all. In this case Ritlabs should have Enter behave exactly as it does in Outlook, as the current function of Enter in this case is no use at all: When confirming the Why mimick Outlook? Next version will be different anyway... I would say, dont change it. If a new user will stop using TB because of it, let be it. None of the users I know stopped using TB because of _it_. (Cannot check this story:) A user told me that when he tries to import an EML to Outlook, he cannot do that. Instead he has to import into Outlook Express, then to import to Outlook. If OE can import it, but Outlook cannot, I think that is Outlook's fault. But they blame TB... Why? SMTP authentication fails, easy to fix bug
Please confirm: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=7523 In the SMTP Auth. window there are two choices: - Same user/password as for Mail Retrieval - Use specific settings Problem is, that if someone first select Same user/password as for Mail Retrieval and check the Require secure auth., then select Use specific settings and NOT select the Require secure auth. box, the SMTP auth will not work if no need for sec. auth. The problem is that even if I use the Use specific settings, it seems that the program uses the settings of the Require secure auth. box of Same user/password as for Mail Retrieval. Maximum number/age of messages in a folder
I think, there is a bug when you set the Maximum number/age of messages in a folder. I mean, for me it is a bug, not a WAD, or if it is WAD, it has to be changed. So, the mail has to be read in order to remove it. If you set 100/100 for number and age, and you have e.g. 200 unread messages in that folder, none of them will be removed. If the mails are read, it works. For me, if I specify 100/100, I dont want the read flag to be accounted as a factor in the decision if a mail has to be deleted, or not. Dont even leave any trace of it!! Shit... More and more users send me angry emails that they are tricked: they have automated update and they let the program do it. Result is: Evaluation copy. Hello Thomas, I don't want any red windows. I'm not user v1.0, the log is enough. DE Sorry you are wrong here. Interesting. I checked again and I still don't want any red windows. KV Unfortunately, it is not about you. No, it's about Gmail's non-standard behaviour. This is a non-issue for most people. No, you are wrong. It is about LETTING THE USER KNOW if there is an error in receiving mails. KV I am sure, that your majesty reads all programs' manual, all fineprint KV of the credit cards and medicines. No need to be sarcastic. It won't help the discussion and development of ideas. Why, being selfish does? KV The same applies here. You can be suspicious. I dont want to be. I and KV the other 99.9% of the users of TB want to be notified about problems. KV (I know, believe me, shit falls down to me and I believe, to Marek, KV too, if TB has a glitch. Glitch: for example unfixed bugs in the last KV version of TB, that had C/S support.) And want to know how to deal KV with it. We are not talking about a glitch or bug in TB!. TB! is WAD. The discussion is about whether the design needs to be changed in order to cater to one non-standard email provider. I say no, you say yes. Fine. Thomas: please read again the thread. Read your mails. It is not about GMail anymore. It is about IF THE MAILS ARE NOT IMPORTED FOR ANY REASON, the log is not enough. Please don't let TB! go the way for the stupidest user imaginable. KV Unfortunately, TB is a commercial product. It HAS TO BE PREPARED KV for everybody, including the stupidest user. Dont forget: you KV can be a stupidest user of ... e.g. a car, a chemical, a KV prescription drug, etc. Not everybody lives in a country where this product may be hot has to be printed on a hot coffee cup in big red letters. Who you are talking about? What I talk about: nobody is expert in everything. Not everybody wants to know how everything works. E.g. I know how caffeine works in your body. You just drink the coffee. I bet, you did not know that it is its metabolite that responsible for its effect, right? (Dont Google it now.) I am a chemist, you are not. We are different. DE What if you have gone away from your computer for a cup of DE coffee. A message of two could not be saved because of space. DE Then because of a process that you are running e.g. a clean up, DE space becomes available it can then download the next set of DE messages. Then the message will be downloaded whne the space is available. It is KV Aha. Say an important message cannot be downloaded because of this. KV And you agree with this. Interesting business attitude... If there is no space in your harddisk, you will have other problems. And, if it happens so regularly that you need your email client to tell you, you should review your policies with regards to disk space usage. Shit man, try to understand that NOT EVERYBODY wants to be an expert. Am I vulgar now? Yes. I deal with users of TB every day. And this kind of small issues will kill TB on the long run. KV Dont forget: TB is used by corporate users. TB is a business tool for KV them. Not glitches allowed. Or if recognized, must be fixed. Correct, but there is no glitch here. Ok, then something that can be improved on. Easily. only on Gmail that this doesn't work, so don't use Gmail.Don't give me red windows for all my accounts just because of Gmail's non-standard behaviour. KV We moved over GMail a long time ago. This conversation is about failed KV import of messages FOR ANY REASON. The reason is Gmail... If a message is not imported, why does Gmail prevent a second download attempt? I suggest to change email provider, as TB! already re-downloads by default. Only Gmail doesn't let it. BUT: the user should know about if the mail download is UNSUCCESSFUL for any reason. DE In this case the warning would have gone past in the status bar, DE you would not have noticed. I don't want to, because TB! attempts to downlaod the message again until it has been successfully imported into the message base. KV Nonsense... Really? You seem to know about the inner workings of TB! than Stefan, who said the same - and it is my experience also. Yes, I've been in the situation that one or more mails couldn't be imported, no problem: TB! downloaded them again next time. Of course, I don't use Gmail. I used the word nonsense for that it is acceptable for you to wait until a mail can be downloaded. What if it cannot be downloaded for hours??? DE And you call this a 'stupid' user. DE I would like a warning box with some detail, if necessary it can DE be switched off for the 'intelligent' users. Turn it off by default. KV No. Hardwire it in. Just in case somebody uses Gmail... Nice suggestion. If I would read this conversation to my 5 year olds, they would understand that IT IS NOT ABOUT GMAIL... Should I spell it? Vili

Hello Van Noord, KV IT IS NOT ABOUT GMAIL. Please read the mails we exchanged. I have been reading the thread. For practical purposes it is about Gmail. No. If you really read it, it is about that when a mail downloaded but not imported, let the user know it. Put it into their face. I have hundreds of TB users in many countries around the world. I teach them about the Log because I want them to be aware and enabled, not controlled by ignorance. You dont see the point here. It is about John Doe, who buys TB from Cifnet with his credit card, and does not want to look at a 1-line pane at the bottom of his screen IF TB does not work as it is designed.. And even if he does, what does he see there? Please read Elliott's initial mail. Where it is described in the manual what that FETCH - could not store message (file name - C:\DOCUME~1\Davide\LOCALS~1\Temp\bat623.tmp) means? Huh??? I dont remember such section. You teach your TB customers (not really TB customers, I am sure, they dont pay _only_ for TB) this too I am sarcastic? Yes, you bet. My intention is to make TB better. If it needs sarcasm, let's go that way. On the _very rare_ occasion that a message doesn't download they know where to look for the reason, and, can view all of the account activity. How can you differentiate between: a.) connection is ok, but mails cannot be imported or b.) everything was ok? Check the log all the time? Also, all users are taught how to use the webmail interface for their account(s). Why the hell is this important here? I know only one reason: you want to show how great you are. Ok, I send you a pin for this. How many times have you, or another user, had this problem with a service other than Gmail? This is what shows your ignorance. When a bug detected, that should be corrected. Even if the chance that bug causing a problem is slim. That is called good programming attitude. I repeat: if the bug DETECTED and known. And please, can we finally forget GMail??? It was Gmail that started this thread. It is still about Gmail with a miniscule need for this using other providers. So, if somebody would cut your phone and internet lines, what would you say if your provider would say: Sir, it just affects you, so who cares...? You are totally ignorant... I am not against an error message for non-downloadable messages. I am totally against a large _red_ panic message as you suggest. Ok, it can be blue if that helps. :) Vili Current beta is 4.0.39.27 (ALPHA) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello Roland, RB In 4.0.38 I have not got all my messages! I think that there are missing 3.000. Sure. You should not go to .38 and continue to use the Alpha, this is what Maxim actually said in his messages about .36 and .38. Sorry, if it wasn't clear enough... Now, you should backup your messages in .38, run the Alpha again and restore messages from .38. But there I don't see all my old - and some times very important - messages! I have in the meantime deleted the whole TheBat. I have printed out my TheBat! Key Block and have written it now by hand in the registration. It seems, however, that there is something wrong. Therefore I have written concerning the key to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , hoping for help! As you can see, I have also not any more all my templates! :-( I can confirm some similar behaviour. I upgraded my old version to the newest MSI. After that, some old message did not appear. Then (I had old exe-s) I went back to sem 4.0.24.0 or something and the messages are there again. Re[4]: Restore Problems
Hello Hamish, More serious in my experience is the lack of sync features between The Bat and Voyager. Attempts to keep my Voyager memory stick and my PC's The Bat are frustrating to say the least. Do this: use Voyager on your PC as well. - There is a tokenact.dat file in the MAIL subfolder, that is specific for the drive Voyager is installed on. Make a copy of it with tokenact_usb.dat name in the same dir (copy somewhere else first, rename it, move back). - Copy the Voyager dir from your USB drive to the PC. - Start Voyager and activate it again. - Now make a copy of the current tokenact.dat file in the MAIL subfolder with tokenact_PC.dat name in the same dir (copy somewhere else first, rename it, move back). - At this point you have tokenact.dat, tokenact_usb.dat, tokenact_PC.dat in the MAIL subfolder. Use Voyager. If you travel, just copy the whole Voyager onto the USB stick, delete the tokenact.dat file, copy the tokenact_usb.dat as tokenact.dat into the MAIL and you are ready to use it. After the travel, just copy the whole Voyager from the USB stick onto the PC, delete the tokenact.dat file, copy the tokenact_PC.dat as tokenact.dat into the MAIL and you are ready to use it. I think, you get the idea. I do this, except that I shuttle the same Voyager between my 14 laptop (used at home), my 7 laptop (longer travel) and the USB stick (short travel) :). -- Vili The Bat 4.0.24.13 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 Current beta is 4.0.39.27 (ALPHA) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: messages go missing
Hello Marek, It's actually how GMail behaves - the messages are deleted as soon as they're downloaded, no matter what client wants to do with them afterwards. You can use Web interface and reset counters to be able to download messages again. Beware the dupes! :-) But we all agree that if The Bat! cannot save the 1st mail, it should NOT download the other messages but give the user a big red screen that he has to cleanup the TEMP dir, and ONLY allow download mail when the user confirms that it cleaned it. OR: be sure before download a mail that it will be able to store it: check size and check if it can store the temp file on the HDD. agree, I have added a BT report long time ago about impossible deleting of messages - after long invetigation, reason was insufficient space, but there was no warning about that, del key just did nothing. This is just my suggestion to Ritlabs: these are the small (correction: seems to be small) things that makes a BIG difference. Reliability. Dependability. Error handling. -- Vili The Bat 4.0.24.13 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 Current beta is 4.0.34.25 (ALPHA) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: Voyager - backup - relative path
In the setup of the Backup: Is the a possibility to give a relative path where to store the backup files? As far as I see there can only be an absolute path. Would be nice when Voyager could support this feature - my USB external Harddrive with Voyager is not connected to the same PC all the time. On this PC Voyager is under F:\ - on the other under H:\ and IMHO it makes no sense to store the backup files on drive C:\ It makes no sense to backup something to the same drive... This is a problem for me with the newest version as well. Your video seems to be from a version before 4.0.34. Are you sure that this error persists in 4.0.34? We have redesigned the tabs completely in this version. I fixed it. This is how: I grabbed the Date/Search toolbar on the top, and moved it to the center of the window. Closed the window. After reopening, the tabs were shown and the Date/Search toolbar was in the middle, where I left it. I moved it back to the top, closed the window. After reopening, the tabs are still ok :) Restart, still ok :) What I noticed: when I started to move around the Date/Search toolbar, I was able to insert the toolbar to the very left/top corner of the window, ABOVE the Notepad tab. Now I cannot do that... How, where do you store the display coordinates of the Date/Search toolbar of SmartBat? -- Vili The Bat 4.0.24.13 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 Current beta is 4.0.34.0 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: TB starting
Hello Graham, This problem occurs occasionally and is a pain when it does. Think it has only happened with the recent beta versions of 4.28 .. When starting TB it displays the version info window and this should then go away for password entry but every now and then it sticks and nothing seems to make it go away and the only recourse is to close the program and re-load. Similar problem with Voyager, I dont know if it is really related or not: if you start Voyager twice (click on the shortcut to Voyager.exe twice) before the password is entered, then the main screen of Voyager is shown and no mail is loaded. -- Vili The Bat 4.0.24.13 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 Current beta is 4.0.28.4 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello Roger, Pressing down arrow does nothing here! KV Because you are using the Windows editor. We are talking about KV MicroEd (check yesterday's mail in the thread). I am *not* using the Windows editor and have never used it. Please see the attached 'Message editor bar.jpg' file. V Hmm... V Anyway, many of us experience the problem, so Ritlabs will fix it. We hope so Vili, but it is difficult when different things happen on different computers! It is better if we can tell them why, or when, the differences occur. It seems that here the down arrow key only malfunctions when the editor has been completely cleared by Ctrl+A. That is enough to point Ritlabs to the right directions, I think. In this reply it is working normally, but will not go below the bottom line of my signature.(I'm not sure whether this WAD) Hmmm... It _always_ go beyond the last line at me using MicroEd. It is the Windows Editor, where it cannot go beyond the last line. Re[2]: default charset
Hello Peter, V My advice would be: please DONT use Unicode. That uses two bytes to V show e.g. a letter a instead of one. Just to clarify this: Unicode != UTF-8! That's an important difference!!! Unicode is a character table that is capable of containing more than the usual 8-bit char tables. UTF-8 is an *ENCODING* of these characters. In short: UTF-8 says which position in the Unicode-table the character is at. UTF-8 uses 8 bit for standard ISO-8859 characters and 16 bit for special characters (like e.g. German umlauts). V The world has chosen it because of laziness. Instead of sending the V charset and then a charcodes, people send a lot of byte 0 nowadays. *ONLY* when using e.g. UTF-16 (or UCS-2) as character *encoding*. So to sum up: albeit Unicode might be used as character set it's not necessarily the case that 2 bytes get transferred, because the *encoding* can make use of (only) 1 byte to _transfer_ the information. Thank you, I did not know this. -- Vili The Bat 4.0.18.3 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 Current beta is 4.0.18.6 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello Jens, enough for most people, I'd think. Personally, I access the URL manager often, so a toolbar icon makes sense for me. Why do you access it often? Or if there is a Deny once, Allow Once Option beeing inserted, or if the Download all Images Once Option has been hidden in the URL Manager. /sarkasm Deny once is easy: just close that window. Allow once is harder to do :) But both should be easily implemented. On the other side, I think, TB is the only client that can do this selected download, so let's be patient with them. -- Vili The Bat 4.0.18.3 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 Current beta is 4.0.18.6 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Voyager 4.18.0.4 bugs
List of bugs I observe (some of them was mentioned, I just make a list, none of them is a real show stopper): 1. Still writes into the registry: I have a HKCU/RIT/Software/Voyager/SmartBat branch 2a. Overwrites the voyager.lng file. I know, it is ok for general user, but we have our own English/Hungarian LNG file (600 kB instead of 6 MB), and it is overwritten all times. 2b. Puts a lot of spell checker files into the speller subdir and Russian, Polish and another Hunspell dic into the Dictionaries subdir. By my opinion, 2a and 2b should be customizable. It is not because of the unnecessary files, but it generates a long list in the selectable language list. 3. I still have problem with SmartBat. I press F6 in Voyager and no Notepad tabs. In TB, it works fine. It started with v4. See attached images. If I click in the Scheduler tab and back to SmartBat tab, the notepad tabs reappears. I am using SB very often, so it is disturbing. 4. After downloading mails, sometimes it is slow to display a folder (Inbox) with 4000+ messages, size in 300 MB. Not THAT big. It takes ca. 5-6 secs until the message list appears... -- Vili The Bat 4.0.18.3 on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Szervizcsomag 2 attachment: VoyagerSmartBat.jpgattachment: BatSmartBat.jpg Current beta is 4.0.18.3 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Zip My The Bat!
http://www.thebat.hu/Download/ZipMyTheBatv1.zip Just download and unzip it into an empty dir. While it is only in English, I make it available, to see if it worth to make it multilingual: ZipMyTheBat. It ZIPs selected directories and the HKCU/Software/RIT reg key into a zip file. In the name of the ZIP file, %Date and %Time macro can be used. Also, if the program is started with the -r switch, it will automatically run using the parameters set. So, it can be used for scheduled backup. After playing around with ZIP components, I gave up, all of them had some flaw (did not work ok, was too slow, or not free :)). So I trigger a standalone ZIP program. So, now ZipMyTheBat works this way: - on the screen you add the directories to add to the ZIP file - you specify the ZIP file (the program saves these settings in the ZipMyBat.ini file and will be loaded next time), %Date and %Time macros can be used. The \, :, etc. characters will be replaced by _ in the filename - you click on the ZIP it! button - ZipMyTheBat exports the HKCU/Software/RIT reg key into C:\TheBat_%DATE_%TIME.reg - after a 5 sec delay it triggers the freeware FreeByte ZIP (I put it into the distrib package) and passes along the directories and the exported .reg file and the name of the ZIP file, so FreeByte ZIP will produce the ZIP file. So, ZipMyTheBat is like a Windows GUI batch editor kind of thing. But I can add it now to my scheduled tasks or click on an icon and I will have a complete backup of my TB. In my case, it is only the C:\Program files\The Bat! dir and the reg. key. I tested, it was able to produce a 2 GB file. I dont know about the 4 GB limit, I guess it cannot handle that.
