wasnt Malcolm X called Detroit Red in his younger days, even though he
was
from Lansing, Michigan? Lansing Red somehow just doesnt carry the same
weight nor street appeal :^) but Lansing is a LONG way from Detroit.
must have something to do with the fact that Detroit is the only major
metropolis in the state of Michigan and the only city others around the
country (or world) know by name in this state.

when i chat with folks on soulseek i tell them i'm from lansing, mi. an hour
northwest of detroit. now i guess i can just say detroit, since i started
moving my belonging to hamtramck last weekend, yea i know its not detroit.

malcolm also live in mason mi. after his father was murdered.

which i think has more to do with the detroit red tag, he hated lansing.

but then lansing like flint have something incomon with detroit, the
automotive industry. so in that since they are one with GM.

There hasn't been any word of Planet E or SS afterparties, but neither threw
parties last year so I don't think it's out of the ordinary. It would be
nice if someone added Carl to their lineup, although that might just
frustrate festival goers more seeing as there are well over 100 seperate
events happening between Wednesday and Monday. It's really getting difficult
to decide where to go.

Any word on Planet E or Sound Signature parties? Not looking for details
ahead of time or anything, just wondering if they're gonna happen. Seems
odd

Carl Craig is not on any of the lineups I've seen so far given his
(deservedly) ever-increasing profile as a DJ. No sign of Theo Parrish
either... By my count, these two Detroit DJs have probably played London
more than anyone else in the last year. Am I reading too much into this, or
would this not be a huge indication that both parties are due for
announcement soon? Am I just thinking wishfully? Is it conceivable they
wouldn't get booked anywhere for the festival?

well ken i'll give you my opinion if you like.

the Congoman 12 doesn't really sound like it has any C2 involvement but
is just a really nice track to have if you like dub/old reggae. the
 sleeve/packaging is nice too.

the Beanfield 12 is really good...kind of on the same vibe as the Busted
Trees 12 (which i think is better from a 313 depth point of view, and
easier to get hold of). the mix is a long epic with a female vocal but
doesn't fall into the trap of being too smooth and sophisticated. this
and the busted trees thing are essential c2 12s if you ask me
(especailly if you like carl's recent output...ie angola rmx etc)

(313) Detroit and Geography

2004-05-25 Thread sasha
All this talk about where one is from has me thinking of something that
has been nipping at me since I made the trek from East to West about 5
or 6 years ago; how the landscape has such an important effect on the
impact of music.

For those of you not familiar with the US, the Northeast, on the coast,
in cities like Boston and NY (and Detroit) is very industrialized. Here
on the West Coast, especially in the Bay Area (San Francisco - or should
I say Pacifica, cause technically, I'm 5 miles south of the city?), the
land is more open and people are generally more in touch with the
environment around them. Some places, like LA, don't have a city center
and seem like one endless suburb. So, the point is that the West Coast
does not generally feel like an East Coast city.

Anyways, upon moving from Boston to SF, I noticed that all the music I
had previously been into, like UR, the more hard-hitting techno, etc,
did not feel or sound the same to me. The impact was no longer there.
Driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, and seeing the towering rocks
and blue ocean and blasting UR's X101 makes no sense to me any longer.
Hard to feel like a techno rebel with all this sunshine and blue skies
around. Although I still can get into the jazzier UR stuff, I avoid the
hard techno bin at the local shop now. House, funk, disco, environ, it
all sounds better out here somehow.

Not to imply that techno, especially Detroit techno, does not have a
universal appeal on some level, but it's taken moving around to help me
understand that music's appeal lies more than in just the art. The
cultural milieu, and the environmental surroundings have an important
impact as well.

Anyone else experience this?

erm, well. I bought it, I think I've listened to it twice! Me and Dunc

ha ha, for some reason it reminds me of kelvin! bet he plays it...!

probably you need to know that for some reason in the last few years, I

dunno what changed there. I think he had a run of just outstanding remixes,
which I felt were some of the best techno records around at that time. Also,
I think some of Carl's best tracks are when he already starts with
something, a sample, or obviously parts for a mix...

I'm crap at buying records sometimes, I end up with stuff from obvious
producers, I hardly ever take a chance on things. guess thats what a ltd
budget does for you.

blah blah blah, I talk too much s**t.

(313) Burial mixes

2004-05-25 Thread jason kenjar

hi 313

has anyone noticed if the kick drums on the Artists/Versions
compilations sound as deep or kicks as hard as they do on the 10s? I'm
kind of picky, so listen carefully if you can and tell me what you
think.

there was a remix of another zap mama tune on shelter last year, think it
was a track off the album 'seven'. the album they did after that was quite
electro influenced from what i can remember, never bought it though.
i loved the earlier work of zap mama [some of it was used in a movie by
matthieu kassovitz called 'metisse'] just beautiful female accapellas,
always loved the rhythm of those songs.
haven't heard this release, but i am curious to find out what c2 has done to
zap mama.

Well Phonic on Poland Street is *sort of* picking up were Koobla left off. I
mean two people who used to worka t Koobla now work there. However, the way
Phonic got started is the subject of some controversy and the fall out from
Koobla has ineveitbaly meant some lingering bitterness. Shame really. The
really nice Koobla record shop folks who are now out of a job.

That said, Phonic is very very good. Wide ranging - very large for an
independent record shop and well arranged. big 313 stock too. No trance/hard
house etc. Some rarities too. Never seen Mahogany Brown on vinyl anywhere
else for instance.

Re: (313) Burial mixes

2004-05-25 Thread jason kenjar

Wait a minute...

I love the burial mixes for many reasons, among them is their
incredibly deep reverberating, yet astonishingly precise bass lines and
percussive patterns. Yet, I find myself missing 3 or 4 of the Burial
10s I'd really like. Turns out that the Burials happen to be pressed
on a 2 different single album LP formats, with 4 tracks per side. Thats
good news, unless of course, the grooves are too crowded, which often
is the case when people opt to press LP's on one disc instead of
multiple discs. Crowded grooves can cause all sorts of sound quality
problems including a diminished low end sound , but Im sure most people
here already know what over crowding can do to sound quality. I've
learned this lesson the hard way times and ended up unsatisfied with a
particular pressing.

Ken, on a personal tip. I might be dumb as a rock and equally
untalented, ask anyone :) Don't patronized me while you are trying to
invalidate my curiosity in the same breath. My concerns are valid for
the content which this community is based upon.

So, once again list readers. Anyone care to contrast / compare the 10s
vs. the LP formats of the burial label, especially the level of the
bass lines and kick drums? Please do so very critically as i would if i
could.

ok i have a couple of the 10s and the two LPs.

from the stuff i've listened to so far (tho i've not done a back to back

ive played that c2 rmx nearly every time ive deejayed for the last

Yes, this is my baby... and I'm setting it free. Excellent for live
sets. The Minus sticker comes stock.

My username on ebay is theorem if you want to check it out.

Yamaha RY-30
Drum Machine

This drum machine is seriously under-rated... How many drum machines out
there have filters? This one does, and they work very well-- assignable to
the pitch wheel on the left... Tweak your thumb raw. I used this drum
machine to record a song called Shift. Find it on Kazaa and hear this

Casio RZ-1 (313 Celebrity Special)
Digital Sampling Rhythm Composer

I bought this a few years back from Dan Bell, and as it turns out it is the
actual machine he used to record Work that MF... It's a bit beat up, but
is in perfect working order.

(313) 313 get together + free event (nebula + negative-saucer)

2004-05-25 Thread /0
hi all,

for anyone coming to detroit for the festival, please come down to nikkis in
greektown between 3 and 7pm on sunday, as Tim Steward has organized an event
that would be a perfect place for a 313 get together. Tim will play first,
followed by the first ever non-radio live PA by negative-saucer (me and a
friend)

I've heard this place has great pizza, and they will be providing some for
free during the event. come say hi, get some pizza, and listen to some
music. its right next to the greektown casino, easily walking distance from
the festival.

lineup and info is as follows:

Sunday, May 30th 2004 - Nikkis - Detroit (Greektown)
Local Explosion
nebula (Soultraxx Records Detroit) (3-5pm)
negative-saucer (Live)(EMM Records, San Francisco | Ann Arbor) (5-7pm)
FREE!!!

negative-saucer will also be doing a 3 hour (!!!) live PA friday, may 28th
on WCBN radio in ann arbor. set time is 12-3am, will be webcast on
www.wcbn.org

thanks for giving us access to your mind,
-Joe

negative-saucer live PA gear: 2 laptops (ableton live, max/msp,
dreamstation), a tr-707, 2 electrix filter factories, an electrix filter
queen, an alesis ineko, an evolution uc-16, and an evolution uc-32.

Didn't they sell the mastering business recently? Too

i've certanly gotten more of a hip-hop and downtempo vibe going since
moving from Detroit to LA.

slower beats for slower days?

On Tue, 25 May 2004, sasha wrote:

Greetings all.

I just joined this list a couple of days ago in the hope that I can revive
my interest in Detroit Techno. I've always loved that electronic Detroit
sound, but over the past few years I've not been buying much music at all.
Mainly due to a lack of money and not knowing what to look out for.

Anyway, I was wondering if there were many artists out there with mp3s to

section, and some of the music was really quite good.

Also, I've got an album from a number of years ago by the Detroit
Escalator Company. Does anyone know if they're still going? That's one of my
favourite all time albums. Really nice music.

One other thing, if there are any artists or producers out there looking

 Greetings all.

I just joined this list a couple of days ago in the hope that I can
revive
my interest in Detroit Techno. I've always loved that electronic Detroit
sound, but over the past few years I've not been buying much music at all.
Mainly due to a lack of money and not knowing what to look out for.

Anyway, I was wondering if there were many artists out there with mp3s
to
share? I used to visit mp3.com every so often where they had a Detroit
section, and some of the music was really quite good.

Also, I've got an album from a number of years ago by the Detroit
Escalator Company. Does anyone know if they're still going? That's one of
my
favourite all time albums. Really nice music.

One other thing, if there are any artists or producers out there looking
for drum machine samples from the 80s and 90s, I've got all the samples
from
45 drum machines on my website www.avene.org All free to download.

   Regards,

 Glenn

Just wondering, but that list of drum machines samples looks a lot like
the sample from this Akai sample CD i got called Dance Mega Drums,
which has an almost endless collection of drumcomputers on it, ranging
from the X0X series to the Mattel drumcomputer (yes the people who made
Barbie Ken also created a drumcomputer :))

(313) who is Dave Ball?/radio playlist - 22/5/04

2004-05-25 Thread dan

hello

3rd of the recent batch of New Religion 12s came last week. It's by
Sonic Insomniac and is excellent - very 313 in flavour, I suspect it
will appeal to a lot of people on this list.

The production credit is to one Dave Ball, my question is, is this
the same Dave Ball of Soft Cell/The Grid/Psychic TV/Kylie fame?

Alex - can you shed any light on this?

Also, the Jazzanova mix is really good, a proper 'mix' if that makes
any sense (probably not)? The programming is brilliant. If anyone
wants a copy I'm up for a CD swap (don't do the soulseek thing as yet
I'm afraid).

(313) Detroit Record Shops, The Return of...

2004-05-25 Thread Chris Anglesey

Record Time, Roseville closed over festival weekend due to flooding...
Can anyone confirm whether this info is correct or not ??

Pretty gutted if it's true as not only is it a great record store but it
also means
one less place to shop during our short stay in the D. Having said that
there's
always Melodies Memories, Vibes and Record Time, Ferndale to visit whilst
me and my homies are over for the fest.

Can anyone out there tell me the best way to get from Melodies Memories
to Vibes and the Record Time in Ferndale. Don't need precise directions -
just enough info to give to a cab driver. Does anyone know what the opening
hours are for Vibes also ? A friend has told me that it's only open certain
days of the week - is this true ??

Any info would be much appreciated,

Chris.

Re: (313) Re: Koobla / Vinyl Junkies

2004-05-25 Thread Nicole Slavin
Vinyl Junkies is a wicked shop and in my experience has plenty 313 stuff.
What i do find, however, is that they don't seem to be very well-stocked and
so tend to run out of copies of what you want (although this could just be
indicative of how many heads shop there). It's definately the friendliest
shop in London, so much so that i just got an invitation from them about a
party they are throwing on 11th June for anyone who has ever shopped there -
what great guys! Info at: http://www.vinyl-junkies.com/
And to keep this more OT, CC, Theo and Mike Grant all shop at Vinyl Junkies
when they are in town.
Koobla was rubbish. I am loathe to shop at an establishment where the staff
know less than me about records, it really does mean that they don't know
enough to be working there.
