When he and Mark played the main stage at DEMF a few years ago, I
don't think there was anything smooth about the transitions.
No matter, I'm not a stickler for seamlessly beatmatched DJ sets anyway.

Last night, Moritz's set wasn't clunky at all and it was much more
uptempo than I was expecting. He played a very good mix of styles,
with a few surprises along the way.

I stayed until 2am and feel exhausted now! Now I've gotta find a way
to muster up enough energy for Derrick tonight...

Fantastic music, but played a clunky laptop DJ style set. Lacked any flow or
rhythm. He played a lot of his own stuff (BC, Main St, Rhythm and Sound) and
some moments of nice techno and house as well.

Probably didn't help that the club put him on from 5-7am, for which there
was less than 10 people on the dancefloor in a club which has only just
 added techno to their lineup.

(313) Movement 2013

2013-06-10 Thread Darnistle McKuik
I know this is long overdue, but I felt an obligation (misplaced, no
doubt) to post something about the festival.

First of all, I think Paxahau should be commended for having improved
the sound quality at the Underground Stage. The area had already
begun sounding less and less murky each year, but this year I was
quite surprised by the degree of aural clarity. I did not go down
into the pit this year, but the quality of the sound near the
walkways (behind the soundboard and near the bathroom) was very
impressive.

Second kudos to Paxahau for altering the orientation for the Electric
Forest stage speakers, which worked very well. Though I wasn't keen
on any of the music I heard from that stage all weekend, the sound was
very full and rich, much more than previous years when the speakers
were facing the water and the revelers had to stand on the grass.
Dubstep bass sounded very large and powerful, which was quite nice.
Too bad the dubstep itself wasn't in the style that I wanted to listen
to. It'll be nice when perkier 2-step syncopation makes it way back
into dubstep...

Also, I'd like to thank Andrew Duke for some fabulous mixes that
helped me make it through the interminable drive through
Pennsylvania...

Noteworthy sets from the festival itself:

Alton Miller - surprisingly fun and thankfully not too jazzy
Terrence Parker - He really kept the vibe going. His track selection
was energizing and got my hopes up for a fun weekend
Moby - I was running between stages during his set, but I really liked
what I heard. I do hope he played Next is the E
Daniel Bell - a very good, groovy set. Not as starkly minimal as I've
come to expect from him, but very good nonetheless
Cajmere - Loved the vibe! Where are the kick queens when you need them?
Derrick May Kevin Saunderson - Excellent, as always! Who else could
have inspired me to dance in the rain and cold for so long?

As is true every year, the after-parties are overwhelming in their
number and variety. There weren't any mega-events for me year, where
so many people I want to hear will be playing at a single party that I
don't really make plans to be anywhere else. That made deciding on
which parties to go to harder, but it also meant I got to explore more
of the after-party scene. Plus, there's always something to be said
for a night of quality party-hopping.

Friday night, I went to the House Headquarters party @ L!V Resto. I'm
not sure who was playing when I got there, but I did hear Gary
Chandler (fun, but very disjointed) and DJ Assault (Lordy be!!). As
always, I missed DJ Godfather. I think it must be written in the
stars.

Saturday night, I went to TV Lounge for the first time. Every year, I
mean to go there but end up somewhere else. The music was pretty
good, for the most part. Not sure who I was listening to in the
separate rooms, but it was all enjoyable enough. To tell the truth, I
don't remember much about the music, but I liked the club itself quite
a bit. I'll have to make an effort to go there again the next time
I'm in town.

After TV Lounge, I went to Club Waterfalls to hear DJ Minx et al.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize until the night was over that there
was more music happening on the second floor. DUH!!! Sadly, no Minx
for me. The music I did hear on the main floor wasn't bad at all,
though the sound system was painfully shrill. I almost left several
times because the treble was so sharp and loud that it hurt my ears
(not even listening to old Whitehouse is so harsh). However, I
persisted and eventually got to hear a DJ whose set really caught my
attention. I asked him his DJ name and he said DJ 50 Meal (??).
What a strange name for a DJ.

Sunday night, I was at Club Waterfalls again to hear DJ Bone and Shawn
Rudiman. I didn't get to hear Shawn, but DJ Bone's set was truly
invigorating and I danced the entire time I was there. Unfortunately,
I had plans to be at the Echospace/Terrence Dixon party that night as
well, so I couldn't stay as long as I would have liked. It was very
difficult for me to leave, but it had to be done.

Echospace's set was easily the most memorable point of the entire
weekend for me!!! I went there expecting to be bathed in their
evocatively meteorological techno-dub, but instead was engulfed in a
throbbing kaleidoscope of sound, all still on the meteorological tip.
All of this in a truly gritty, grimey warehouse setting. What more
could I ask for? I danced and danced and danced and danced and
danced, and even indulged my inner speaker-whore for most of
Echospace's set. Their rhythms were much more energetic than on their
recordings and though it retained their trademark
variations-on-a-Basic-Channel-theme, there were several points where
the music morphed into something surprisingly reminiscent of late-90's
minimal psytrance (dense layering of aural particulate and relative
independence of constituent bass lines). Ah, what I would have given
to have been on acid for their set!!. I

It could also be argued that the desire for black techno artists to
[re-]connect with the black community could also be rooted in a desire
to see the wellspring from which they drew inspiration continue to serve
as a fomenter for further musical creativity. If you've got quality
compost, it makes sense to want utilize it in order to ensure that your
garden continues to thrive.

After expanding outside of the black community, it is very obvious (to
me at least) that eventually techno would reach a point where it had
morphed and changed to the point where it had less and less obvious
connection with its origins. That process happens with most things that
expand to wider cultures and crosses international lines.

But I don't want to get sidetracked from the Skrillex/BoyzNoize video
that prompted my original comments and its lame attempt to substantiate
their underground credentials via talk of punk and Detroit techno.
It is just more corporate spin, trying to convince the viewer that
Skrillex/BoyzNoize isn't just some corporate-sponsored appropriation of
underground music, but instead come from a respectable musical lineage.

Now, if the video talked about how they heard a lot of polka music
growing up (for example) and wanted to pair that with
techno/rave/dubstep in order to express their musical heritage and
interests, I might have found the whole thing more engaging and less
gratuitous and the references to Detroit would have made more sense.

Skrillex/BoyzNoize aside, I do hope Saunderson was paid well for his
cameo appearance.

Which means, if an African American artist wants popular success, they
have to succeed with white audiences. This includes the most gritty,
real, Afrocentric Hip Hop -- which is actually quite popular amongst
white college kids.

Jazz, Blues, Rock... all the indigenous musical art forms of the
United States have their roots in African-American culture, but an
international success because non-African American people listen to
it. I don't think most African American artists mind this -- it's how
they make a career out of music. I think that they want to remain
connected to the culture into which they were born, but do they really
want to be only connected to their 'own' culture?

The lesson I take away from Detroit Techno is that the African
American originators remained true to their roots, but were perfectly
willing to incorporate influences from European music. I think that
behind the desire for black Techno artists to connect (or re-connect)
with black audiences also has to do with the culture around techno's
creators and fans. These were guys -- like a lot of the Hip Hop
originators -- were middle class, and well educated. They are the
upwardly mobile minority of the minority.

This is one of my many pet-peeves, but why does everyone who courts
commercial success trot out punk as a framework for what they're
doing? Skrillex/BoyzNoize seem to produce party-music-du-jour and seems
about as punk as KC and the Sunshine band (not to belittle KC).

It is interesting to contemplate Saunderson's comments that it used to
be that techno was originally a black thing, but now has morphed into a
commodity of white culture. I understand that it was bound to happen as
the music took hold outside of the black community and began to be
internalized and expressed in a manner more akin to local dispositions.
(sorta like the black Madonna or Chinese Buddha). I try to use this
line of thinking to buffer the uncomfortable thought of how Euro DEMF
has become over the years, but I won't dredge up that topic again...

After watching the video, my lasting impression is that the association
of Skrillex/BoyzNoize with Detroit is precarious and superficial at
best. I'll give them credit for at least giving Saunderson the stage at
the center of the video, but they're obviously trying to suck on the
Detroit teat to solidify their street cred. Does Saunderson's allusion
to the wonderbreadification of techno prove to the viewer that these
guys are the realdealness after all?

I can't help but feel like this promotional video was a Situationist
recuperation in action.

This probably isn't the forum for such a question, but could someone
give some examples of deep house in contradistinction to other styles
of house?

The term seems to be thrown about very often, but I still have no real
sense of what deep house sounds like as opposed to (for example) jazzy
house or disco house or micro house or whatever.

Even if the mainstream of the new 'Deep House' thing is just tech
house with more 707 beats and out of context soul vocal samples, it
may be a case of rising water floating all boats.

The first CD doesn't move me so much: too much vocal house and

Yeah, the name brings up unpleasant musical images.

To my ears, the music has enough shimmy and wiggle that at times it
reminds me of sparse, syncopated house while at other times it sounds
like groovy, nuanced techno.

I didn't call it technohouse because of the tempo, though the tempo
does facilitate a lilting effect from the syncopation. It was more due
to way the rhythms shift along the continuum between house and techno.

Regardless, I think its a fun album and the rhythms are infectious.

I must say, the name Skudge made me think I was in for some of that
really bad bro-step floating around the US these days, luckily that
wasn't the case... ;-)

Also, why do you call it tech-house? This is purist techno, I don't
hear any house whatsoever. House is a feeling in the music, just
because the bpm is slower doesn't suddenly make it house!!!

I go through Drexciya-fests every now and then, though not to the extent
you are right now. Twenty-four hours of the same artist sounds arduous,
though. I can't imagine listening to that much of anyone's music,
except maybe Atom Heart or Pierre Henry.

My favorite is still Neptune's Lair, especially Running Out of Space

including all their various pseudonyms. The reason I am doing this is
because I find their music to be relatively tricky to wrap my head
around in general, while so many of my friends consider Stinson/Donald
to be among the best of their contemporaries. Specifically a lot of
Stinson/Donald tunes sound particularly chaotic even to my modern ears
well trained in noise, avant garde, and the repetitive loops of
minimal classical (Steve Reich, Philip Glass) and techno music. I
wondered if completely saturating my ears with only their music would
change my opinion/enlighten me to their supposed genius at all.

To date I am about halfway through the project based on mostly casual
subway ride listening, and I've not been as diligent in avoiding the
fast forward button as I'd hoped I could be. It's really difficult to
stick to one artist who produced a pretty consistent style of music
without listening to anything else for such an extended period of
time. I do occasionally give my ears a bit of a break and allow myself
to hear some non Stinson/Donald tunage.

To date Wavejumper from their 1995 Aquatic Invasion EP remains my
absolute favorite Drexciya tune:

As a side note, the name I've given this experiment - Drexciyan
Immersion Project - is a kind of funny nod to the sci-fi underwater
mythology that Drexciya built around their music/built their music
around.

Another end of an era...

Venerable Record Time outlet to close after holidays

Adam Graham / Detroit News Pop Music Writer

Yet another casualty of the shrinking record business, Record Time — a Metro
Detroit institution for 27 years — will sell its final piece of vinyl early
next year.

Owner Mike Himes said today he'll be shutting the doors of the store's
Roseville location in March, at the latest. He cites years of declining record
revenues — record sales were cut in half over the last decade — as well as a
massive overhead he can't keep up with any longer.

I've known this day would come, I was hoping we could just ride it out, but we're not able to
do so any longer, said Himes. I've been purely in survival mode for about the last
three years, and it hasn't been fun, really. It's taken its toll. We can't stay open just to stay
open anymore.

The first Record Time opened in 1983 and held various locations in East Detroit before
settling in its current location in 1996. Branches were opened in Rochester and Ferndale
though both eventually felt the pinch of declining record sales. When the Ferndale store
closed in 2007, Himes said at the time, the crystal ball doesn't look so
sunny.

Record Time's Roseville location covers 8,500 square feet and has a large selection of used vinyl
recordings, as well as a heavy presence of electronic records. In recent years, Himes changed his
business model to focus 98 percent on used products, but that presented its own set of
problems: If they didn't have something used, they didn't have it at all, which led to store
regulars buying product elsewhere. We weren't able to give customers what they wanted,
he said.

Record Time will stay open through the holidays and will participate in a Black
Friday event sponsored by Record Store Day, which offers exclusive releases for
independent record store retailers. After that, he plans to liquidate the
store's product, and will probably toast the store's long history by hosting
in-store events with bands and DJs.

Down the road, Himes says he's looking into the possibility of opening another store, but doesn't
have any concrete plans. We could survive in a smaller spot, he says. There's
still a good niche for what we do.

Chris Flanagan, owner of Street Corner Music, moved his store from Beverly
Hills to a smaller location in Oak Park in 2009. He says Record Time still has
a shot.

I think the days of huge record stores, square footage wise, are pretty much over. You
just can't have that playground anymore, he says. But it's really hard to kill off
a name. Even if (Record Time) dropped out and came up again six months later, it would
probably still have a chance.

There are people that are going to be looking for you for a long time to come, and
if things improve around here, (Himes) might have another chance to open his store back
up.

Inner City's performance may be only so-so, but I would still like to

likely be a welcome stylistic change in music.

Derrick May may play everywhere all the time, but he never plays near
where I live so it would be silly to miss the opportunity to hear him
again. He's always played well and interestingly when I've heard him so
I see no reason to skip him altogether.

That said, I love Hood to bits!!! Granted, I was truly disappointed with
his amazingly lackluster set the last time he played the main stage at
DEMF, but I can forgive him since I've heard him play enough times to
know that he can send me into orbit in a way that very few DJs can,
especially when he plays in smaller venues.

The fact that he'll be playing live makes me super curious.

Changes are opt for May and Hood and pop into Inner City occasionally

I hate having to float from stage to stage, but sometimes it can't be

(313) Shopping for Music in Detroit!!

2010-05-19 Thread darnistle
Since I'm going to be in Detroit for DEMF, it goes without saying that I

Hi everyone - what you all think of the new Mill's album? Just

reminds me of From the 21st (my favourite home listening Mills

hypnotic ticking Hi Hats (why is it when I do a straight 16's Closed
909 Hi Hat it sounds rubbish and when Mills does it, it sounds
hypnotic) and spaced out chords floating about all over the place.

I forgot to mention, in an attempt to out do Anya at Bleep 43, Rubadub
have Jeff Mills playing here in at the Sub Club in Glasgow on my 40th
(July 23rd if you want to send flowers, cards etc) - the venue holds
about 300-400 people and he rarely gets a chance to play in such
intimate surroundings here so we're looking forward to it. He's
promised to do something pretty special (juggling, kniting??) and is
playing for three hours . The only downside is that as it's a
Significant Birthday for me it's unlikely I'll be able to remember a
thing the next day so he could be playing a set of Euro Trance Bangers
and I wouldn't know the difference.

The first batch of tickets sold out in three days but there will be a
second batch at the start of July and a small amount kept by on the
door.

As well as my birthday, it's Rubadub's 18th birthday too (Legal to

If Paxahau has finally done something to address the truly awful
acoustics of the underground stage then I'll be impressed, but I don't
have high hopes that that space will sound any less horrendous than it
has every time I've gone down there.

The fact that Detroit techno has always been underground does not
justify knowingly and repeatedly putting DJs in a space in which
everything sounds murky. If the goal is to feature the music, then it
is important that the acoustics aren't a major obstacle to actually
being able to hear the music with reasonable clarity.

Warehouse parties are makeshift and grab bag by default. You don't walk
in the door and expect the room to have acoustically engineered for
crystal-clear sound. The underground stage is like being in a
warehouse, except that DEMF is a planned festival with corporate
sponsorship, so it is reasonable to expect better sound quality
especially when the underground stage is a known sore point and has been
for years.

Why couldn't they use that amphitheater-style area near the waterfront
stage, or set up a large tent somewhere else?

Personally, I kind of like that the Detroit stage is underground. Detroit
techno has always been underground even within the city itself. I grew up
hearing the artists who have played the Detroit stage over the last few years
in smokey, sweaty, concrete venues that were far from safe. It feels fitting to
me. This is coming from someone who prefers to hear techno and house outdoors
as of late too.

I can't argue the acoustics issue, which is far from good. I feel like the
Paxahau guys know what they are doing and are really trying to make it work.

The underground stage area at Hart Plaza is an awful place to hear
music. The acoustics are irredeemable, and the place frankly stinks,
especially after 2 days of sweat, smoke and god knows what. If it is
actually full, it's a serious hazard to human life, as it holds more
people than could exit safely all at once.

Our irrepressible friend Tom Cox is asking people to contact Paxahau
and try and get them to stop using it as a stage area, and ESPECIALLY
to stop using it to hide the real Detroit artists from festival goers.

bother to mention it?

It makes me think that the party will likely attract a bunch of smarmy

hope I live to see the day when female DJs aren't regulated to playing

DJing is one of the few music realms where it really shouldn't matter

I'll agree with that. Jeff's set was a very different animal from the
DJ who played right before him.

But as I said before, Jeff's set seemed to lack momentum. It was fun to
watch him work his magic and create such an intricately woven amalgam of
rhythm-and-sound, but overall it sounded like it had no impetus other
than its own intricacy. After a while, it felt like a moto perpetuo in
still life: Dude Descending a Staircase.

That isn't to say that it was bad set, because it wasn't by any means.
In its own way it was really exquisite. It just didn't leave as strong
an impression as the DJ set before his.

I went to this party. Neither hell nor high water could have kept me away.

Juan's first set was hands down ***THE*** most memorable set of the
entire weekend! He truly sent me!!

Jeff was good, though his set seemed to be lacking momentum.

Does anyone know who the DJ was who played immediately before Juan?

I think that the distinction between 'Live' and 'Not Live' is blurred
at this point to where it's meaningless. I've had the privilege of
watching the two performers who have put the most effort into their
'live' performances up close: Shawn Rudiman and Stewart Walker. They
both have put a huge effort into making their performance mean
something more than pressing 'play.'

And they both build their sets out of preprogrammed patterns. Shawn
works his drum machines in write mode, but any time I've seen him play
he has an MMT8 full of patterns to drive his synths. Stewart will
even occasionally drop a complete track into his set, but only if it's
one of his tracks that's so old he doesn't have separate parts for it.
For both guys, they're making dozens of decisions every minute about
how to shape their music, and their goal is to engage their audience.

To me, your description here is quite in the spirit of what I think of
as a live performance.

Even if what is being manipulated are preprogrammed patterns, if the
artist is manipulating the patterns and making decisions in real-time
to affect how the music will progress, it is a live performance.

Obviously, there is a wider range of liveness in electronic music than
in traditional music. Kraftwerk, Xenakis and Senor Coconut come to mind.

Re: (313) mysticism in electronic music (and where has it gone)

2009-03-19 Thread darnistle
I can relate to what you've said below. I have a particular fondness
for the ambient techno/trance/house/jungle of that general period.

The sound of that era is more or less gone, but I think that mindset
persists and still appears in contemporary musical forms.

As far as relatively recent intelligent goes, off the top of my head,
I can think of Isolee, Mike Shannon, Bruno Pronsato, Tupperware, Carter
Tutti (aka Chris Cosey), Boxcutter, Skull Disco, Texas Faggott,
Stewart Walker, Paradox, Gescom, Burial, Sutekh, Horsepower Productions,
Troll Scientists, Illusion of Safety, Flying Lotus, etc.

The early 90s is as gone as the early 80s, the roaring 1920s, the early
Romantic, high Baroque and rockin' 13th century. There never will be
another period like those because the factors that made them what they
were have passed. No biggie. There are tons of eras gone by, if you
think about it, yet there is still good music to be found.

For me, it doesn't matter so much that those eras are gone because the
music from those time periods is still close to my heart and so never
sounds or feels old to me. It is still part of my living present, as
much as the newer things I like are.

Finding new music that grabs me has always required a lot of sifting
through musical mediocrity. Some period have more spurts of innovation
than others, but it still requires that I keep my ears open since it is
always possible that someone can serve up everything I like about Atom
Heart, Vulva, Air Liquide, PWOG, etc without being derivative, retro or
nostalgic.

now, but I am having a hard time floating through what music is now
and how to find things that continue reshaping the order of my world
in regards to recorded sound.

I feel like all I can do is feel like there's an era gone by, but I'm
not sure what there is as a music after techno? (or ambient / uk
electronic, what have you).

Also - I am unsure if I am simply a victim of my own obscured frame of
reference which is defined by my own transition from being an active
fanatic and always listening to music and working on synths non stop
when I was younger to having entered real life (work, corporations)
and reliving days gone by. Maybe they are simply gone by for me, and
my own attitude is that of an old timer (even if I'm young) saying
that there will never be another this or that, or that music is over,
etc. Maybe there is always people doing interesting things, building
scenes, and achieving breathtaking aural and all encompassing art, but
this is just a mood I am in now on this reflective Sunday.

Any thoughts?

I know my reference to FSOL or classic early 90s electronic techno
ambient what have you isn't explicit Detroit relevant, but I think
many can identify to these themes.

The below definitely reference detroit artists, and they even speak!

This set was recorded at Wire, a small basement club in Leeds.
The sound was just right for the space, loud and punchy, with strong

bass where you needed it. Before my set the temperature increased as
bodies packed the dancefloor.
I felt relaxed as I played that night, just letting the set flow

wherever it wanted to go, and the great crowd there flowed with it. This
is the first set I've put online using a new technique which combines
the direct recording with a binaural microphone recording to give a much
better sense of the sound as it was when I played this set.

I just got a copy of the new Octave One album which I quite dig. I
guess it's not that new, but I didn't see it get much attention last
month.

I'm considering getting the new Octave One, but have some reservations
since Off The Grid sounded boxed in and distorted. As a result, I'm
not often inclined to listen to that album, though I like a number of
the tracks.

How is the recording quality of the new album? Any issues?

What format (vinyl, CD, or MP3) are you describing re: Off The Grid?

I have the CD version of Off The Grid.

years ago and I really miss it a lot.

I'm need to start saving my pennies.

Tough times for all, and some dimensions of demf in the last two years

I am, however, deeply thankful for any chance to experience a music

What are your overall thoughts on memorial day weekend 2009?

That's simplifying things. My comments were said that sampling and

I enjoy a lot of that stuff quite a bit, but it's popcorn. There's
nothing -wrong- with popcorn, and I like a lot of music that has no
aims except to entertain but if it walks like a duck, quacks like
a duck, it's not pushing things.

I can't find a copy of this anywhere. Every place I've found that lists it
says it is out of stock.

Does anyone know of an online shop that actually has it in stock?

Alrighty!

we just got a fantastic Rob Hood mix CD in today at the shop- it's
spacier and deeper than his Fabric mix and well worth checking out-
it's limited to 350 copies (signed by the man himself!) and a bit more
relaxed than some of the mixes I've heard by him.

cheers

Jason
