RE: [313] UR NYE
Nicely put. Thanks for coming to the defense of us all. It's not only me; I'm coming over with four people, but I know a whole bunch of Dutchies (at least a dozen) who want to come over. They are on hold now, they'll beter know soon or they will have serious trouble even getting to England around that time of the year. This is getting frustrating. Is Cornelius still on this list? He's about the only one who can clear this out. John P.S. Whoever some REAL info on this, please mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I will refrain from nagging now. This is getting a bit ridiculous. People do have to make certain sacrifices to make it to these things. I have faxed Submerge and got no reply, I hear conflicting information on a daily basis from self styled representatives, friends of Ranx, Ranx himself, people who claim they were in contact with UR in London recently and god knows who else. I don't mean to be rude Martin, but why should I believe a word you tell me over all the other circumstantial crap I've been hearing? You've heard John's dilemma, I could have gone back home to Scotland for NY instead, and there are plenty of other people who've gone out on a limb for this. I'm not trying to point any fingers here, or presume the whole thing is a sham - I've got my ticket and I'll go in the hope UR turn up - but if you have something to tell us regarding this event, please make sure it's informative and substantiated rather than mysterious bullsh*t. And for the sake of people like John, if you *do* know something for sure, let us know, or at the very least email John privately. RE: [313] UR/Moodyman NYE
Yeah, and he can repay our train and hotel as well. Ermm, one can only dream right? Just received another mail from Bassic Groove asking me to turn in my report on the UR-party asap after New Year. Feel extra f***ed now. The mere fact that Ranx put Pennington on the list while he was already booked for Switserland raised a few doubts on my side. Apparently he didn't even ask him and just assumed he would be there if he asked the other members. Maybe he just assumed a little too much... John I have had so many assurances from people who say that UR said to them that they WERE going, and that X and Y are secretly going too. If this doesn't come off I expect Ranx to provide a refund, as he said he would definitely pull this off. I am only going in order to see UR, so I'm none too happy paying to see anyone else instead. Is anyone here in direct contact with UR so as to clear this thing up for those of us who are (planning on) going? Or is Ranx paying any attention to this so as to let us know what exactly is going on (rather than boasting about his amazing promotional prowess)? RE: [313] UR/Moodyman NYE
I am extremely pissed off. I spent my last money on train and hotel for London because I wanted to see UR live. Furthermore I can confirm that James Pennington will not perform in London due to a prior engagement in Switserland. James however has put me down very badly last Monday when he didn't show up to play at my party. He didn't even call and up to now I haven't been able to reach him nor those he return my calls. Never had I expected so much disrespect from somebody I thought I could trust. That mere fact that he didn't even call to cancell or refuses to pick up his phone is very hard for me to understand. Untill the early evening everything seemed ok, James promising to be in Ghent by 10pm. From then on I couldn't reach him anymore. I stayed in the train station untill the last train arrived well after midnight. I felt terrible. I would have given an arm for this guy and then he lets me and everybody who turned up (more than we had ever expected) down like that not even wanting to explain. Nice. It puts the whole 'underground' thing in perspective. A whole lot of bullshit, that's what it is. Moodyman'll be great, if he actually plays at all - my thinking at the moment is that we won't actually know until the night whether this will happen or not. I've been misled once it seems, so once more isn't gonna hurt, right? The fact still remains that the line-up as it stands now is far from the one that enticed me to part with £30. When I called up the information line I did ask the guy I spoke to whether the full UR crew would be in attendance - to which he of course replied "yes". Ranx, if you're out there perhaps you could supply us with some kind of insight into how such an ambitious line-up could be miscommunicated (such an advantageous miscommunication at that), and also inform us whether ticket refunds are available for the disappointed ones. I'm trying hard not to scream "Rip-off" at this point, but to be honest I'm frustrated by this and a little pissed off. NC _ Get more from the Web. RE: [313] MOODYMANN in London NYE
As some listmembers already know I have squeezed the last out of my piggy bank to go to London to see UR live. I also arranged for a feature on the party in Bassic Groove, the leading Dutch dance mag. This London-trip is an extremely costly endeavour for me and my friends especially with the exchange rate for the £ being so high. You can imagine how disappointed we all would be if UR would not perform. I guess a lot of us, some more than others, are really waiting for a 100%-sure confirmation. The party is going down in about three weeks. Isn't it time to put an end to the doubt and the rumours? John, concerned, out Personally I have to say that I DO have confidence that this will come off. I'll be very disappointed if there is no live show, though, as happened in '98, when hundreds paid a hefty ticket fee and made it down to London for what turned out to be (highly enjoyable) a DJs-only session, only to find out that UR played live at 69 in Glasgow two days later for a handful of people. Ideally, I'm hoping that UR and Drexciya both play live... But I have to say that I think calling people on this list 'player haters' (ahem) just because they express doubts about everyone on the bill making it over is a little out of order. Everyone on this list will have had experience of big-name DJs not showing up at some point or other. Oh, and if anyone saw the feature on Moodymann in the new Slut, they may have noticed that Ranx is described as 'the only UK promoter to have brought Moodymann to the UK to DJ', which isn't strictly true. I saw him spin at Pure at The Arches in Glasgow in about '96 where I believe he was a last minute replacement for Terrence Parker who couldn't attend due to the then-recent death of Ken Collier. Yep, same here in Belgium. Rolando getting tons of airplay on the national radio : Studio Brussel. Unfortunately way too late (as always), but still a kick up the *ss for a lot of people I guess. And guess what: one of the dj's that plays quite often at Studio Brussel also plays from time to time in the pub we are throwing the party with James Pennington. He asked the owner how he managed to get James and plans to contact us to get James on Stu Bru with some publicity for our small party. Sweet! Seems that quality will get a chance after all. John P.S. I don't know about Holland, but here in Belgium papers and magazines are also starting to pick up on 2 Step as being 'the next big thing'. Arrggh, I hope things don't evolve in a Londonesque way where a thing is 'cool' for two weeks (spot the exageration here) and is slashed the week after that. > *BUT*, in the process of the bagging of house, occasionally the real > thing makes it to the frontline. It seems that more and more people are getting into stuff like St. Germain (His Tourist album reached the top 20 of the album charts) and Rolando. Suburban Knight, intimate party
Alright, it's time to let the cat out of the bag. I, together with a good friend, am throwing a small, intimate party with James next week (Monday) in a small venue (more of a student pub) in Ghent, Belgium. We have specifically asked him to do whatever he wants, although a set of oldschool Detroit stylee would be great. It's a very small party (if we get 150 to 200 people I'll be happy, especially on a Monday), but it should be the start of a new concept that focusses on quality again instead of quantity. We cannot pay a full fee or even fly in artists (James is in Belgium currently), but we hope to establish good relations with a number of artists we believe in and take it from there. Since as a hobby I frequently do interviews with artists this is something we want to explore more in the future. So, any listmembers coming over? RE: [313] UR NYE
Dear all, I would love to go to London around the New Year's period, but am kinda short on money due to the most expensive year in my life (going to live alone, Detroit-Chicago-Berlin, Pioneer mixer and Yamaha RM1-x). It's the second time I ask this, but it's worth the try. Is there anybody on the list who lives in the London area and who is willing to have me and my girlfriend over for a couple of days (Friday till Monday? I know the timing isn't all that good with New Year and all, but it's always much more fun when you can stay with people who know their way around and who are into the same things as you are. The hospitality will be returned. Dennis and Magda Donnohue can back me on this. I had them over in Ghent last weekend after they had us over in June. So if there is anybody who wants to participate in my little exchange programm, please let me know. My private mail is : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Help a poor idealist out here ;-) Thanks people, John P.S. Tom, thanks for the offer; it's still under consideration, but it has been so long since I've been in London that I want to make full use of it (record shops, clubbing, city special for Bassic Groove magazine...) New Year's Eve UR
Hi 313, I've been hiding on Hotmail for a while, but since I couldn't follow the list anymore I switched back to my workmail. Glad to be back and follow the threads. Big question: I'm seriously considering dropping over for the UR-party on New Year's Eve in London. Is there anybody in the London erea who could have me and my girlfriend over for a couple of days (Friday evening till Monday)? The British pound is at its highest exchange rate ever for us Belgians and our piggy bank got hit over the head already a couple of times this year (cfr. going to live on our own, Detroit/Chicago/Berlin, etc.). We can return the hospitality since we have an spare kingsize bed at our place in Ghent, Belgium. Hope to hear from somebody soon. Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] since I'll be out of the office untill Tuesday. Greetz to ya'll, John Osselaer

It was a bit difficult to find the exact entrance point to the festival but that was the only thing you could hold against the organization. Once you entered the site (which was situated in the center of Eindhoven (Stadhuisplaats) on a concrete space surrounded by the local authority building and other office blocks) you could easily walk around. Shop around in the small shops (even with good 2nd hand records but hey who wants to walk around all day with 12's even for me that's a bit to much) One thing that was very special about this festival was the fact that in between DJ sets there were live gigs. So after Josh Wink (DJ), Lady Aida, Luke Solomon (spinning with a nice T-shirt : playing Detroit and than an arrow pointing down) or Surgeon (who surprised me with a good melodic Techno Set ) you could see & hear live sets from : Secret Cinema who gave a very strong set, no annoying breaks in between songs, different approach to the songs as the original versions and really interacting with the audience. Good live set. Suburban knight also gave a good live set, smashing some of his « hitsongs » to pieces and coming out with different versions ( virtually irrecognizable) apart from the occasional recognizable chords but good ones. He played a lot of his early UR stuff. Acid junkies unfortunately played while I was watching Trip do brasil but they had certainly managed to capture the audience, the space was moving in unissimo and the audience was whipped into a frenzy when I went to check them out but it was their last song. Away from the mainstage their was a stage with a more leftfield approach ( even with DJ Grasshopper) were I saw the number one 2-Step DJ in holland GROOVEMASTER JOHNSON (That's what the MC told us anyway) good mixing but unfortunately I'm not really swept of my feet by two-step. Another surprise was Trip Do Brasil (Fr) a trio with two percussionists and a DJ, who managed to lock me in their grooves. Check them out if you have a chance. Unfortunately Fabio didn't show up, or he must have become white overnight. JayCee - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Alan Oldham comics
Hi Jurren, I talked to Alan a couple of days ago in Berlin and he still has some work to do on the comic. It should be for the end of this year or the beginning of next year. The release of the comic is the start of a subdivision of Pure Sonik which will be called Pure Comics. Alan is also thinking about releasing the comic together with an album by respected techno artists. Some of them have already said 'yes' although there is nothing on paper yet. It should be very interesting though and something worth looking forward to. Good move to order the Kraftwerk book. If major topics were put onto the site (as well as nights and events from all over the world), ppl could view it whenever, it would allow for a more summarised version of this list (more preferable than reading through 30 large posts to get to the point). Yeah, that was exactly the same thing I was thinking after the thread on journalists and how difficult it is to manage all of this and all the problems involved. A couple of weeks ago there was an idea of setting up a 313-website, but it kinda died out. What about picking up this idea again? And maybe expanding it to a magazine in print... Ok, these are pretty wild ideas and I don't know all that much about making webpages and all that, but I'm willing to contribute interviews, reviews and info on a regular basis. RE: [313] reviews etc..
It's so heartwarming to see there are so many like-minded people out there doing the same thing, encountering the same problems, having the same ideas and drives. I also have an own radio show. I've been doing radio for about 5 years now. The current show Global Warning has been running for about two and a half years on a dance station in Ghent Belgium. You can't imagine how hard it can be to maintain an underground show even on a dance station. Luckily the man who runs the station (but doesn't own it) has always supported me and protects me from the real bosses. They don't get the music I play and don't see any value in broadcasting interviews with int. techno-artists and stuff like that. The techno community in the region of Ghent however is pretty happy with the show and that is what keeps me going. I also promote artists. I drag along mix-cd's and bio's from G-Force, the best Belgian technoproducer. I do good words for people like Alan Oldham, TP, Anthony Rother, Justin Berkovi, etc., all people I believe in and who diserve to get some attention. I'm in a pretty good position to do this. I frequently do reviews on parties in Belgium and Holland and I know most of the promotors of good parties. They are usually interested in your opinion. Today I received a mail from a promotor in Holland. He was at the DEMF and filmed. We met in Detroit, which is kinda strange because we only live 200km from eachother. Today he mentioned he is going to organise parties on a more frequent basis and was wondering if I could get him in contact with some artists. This is the stuff I love, getting people I believe to play at a party. There is no money in this for me whatsoever, on the contrary (I sometimes send out mix-cd's and tapes with my own money), but the simple fact of being able to do this and the gratitude from the artists who get booked and promoted is more than rewarding. I hope I can expand upon this activity in the future. And 'yes', it would be nice if there was a way of getting paid for this in one way or another, but there are already too many people in this bizz who are solely in it for the money. That's why we can make a difference by not caring for the money and focussing on what it is all about: the music and the people behind it. I was wondering if there are listmembers out there who would like to have one of their mixes broadcasted on my radioshow? We could also start exchanging material like interviews and dj-mixes. RE: [313] Re: [ur-records] Question???
Hi Diana, I hear you sister! Getting reviews published is hell esp. when you're only writing them as part of your hobby. The staff writers always go first. So if you do ten reviews, about two get in. And, oh yes, I know the syndrome of people promising you promo's and never sending them. Even after sending the published interview you did with them and reviews on their releases you bought in the store, they still don't care. I hate that. Why don't they just say 'Sorry, I don't have any more promotional copies to spare'. I would never be mad for that, but now you just keep on running to the mailbox hoping that there will be some cool stuff in there. If we were in this for the money or profit we would have long given up right? Keep writing! John ugh.reviews.when i decided to concentrate on school (novel idea eh?)and work 2 jobs, i went to just writing reviews for on-lines.ive been reviewing strictly now for about 2 years for 2 of em. i would say my one big complaint for reviews is getting the material from the people and then finding a place to post it. whenever i see people i always say 'send me your record,so i can review and get it out there' and maybe only a few do send it to me (after taking my info) and once i do get it, i then have to have shop it around and find a place/mag for it to be posted because 1.the editor has to feel someone cares enough to read the review 2.some one else might already be reviewing it. I also always listen to the full piece of material (i dont assume the whole cd sounds like track one,so i dont stop there),which takes time. For me, writing reviews is also like putting your head freely on the chopping block and giving the public the ax. Though i always try and be positive, some sort of informed critism is always needed-which i hate doing-and will always piss some one off. so...now that ive done that semi-off topic tangent, any support lists for music journos? ;0) diana Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Older people's views on detriot?
Same story here. My mom just turned 50 and over the years I have been playing so many cd's (my turntables used to be in a seperate room above the garage) in the morning (to get my engine going) that she became used to it and sometimes she said: 'I really like this, what is it?'. Thanks to years of enthousiastically talking about my idols and the parties I went to, my mom knows a lot of artists by name and she's pretty well-informed (for a mom that is...). I'm really lucky she let me go to all these parties even if it was far away or abroad. Now I live together with my girlfriend in the city of Ghent, but I'm still gratefull she never attempted to supress my musical ideas. Thanks mom!! RE: [313] 313 Madness!!
Well, that sums up about my idea about all the crap I had to delete from my mailbox the last two weeks as well! Word! As to the discussion about hard techno versus soulfull Detroit stuff: I have both styles in my crates and tons of other stuff ranging from ambient, over wacko stuff by Neil Landstrumm and Justin Berkovi, over electro including Kraftwerk to Drumcodes, The Advent, Johannes Heil etc. I also have quite a lot of house and old stuff like Gary Numan, disco, etc. Be a lttle bit open to all kinds of music and you'll go happier through life. Sometimes I have people over when I sell a couple of my records. It's a pitty to see they only want a certain style and don't even want to listen to anything else. It usually takes them a couple of years to become more open-minded. The longer you have been following this music (and its predecessors) the easier it is to adopt this attitude because you know where it all comes from. I guess we need to give the youngsters who just came into this fascintating world some credit, but the brainless activity that has been displayed on the list for the last two weeks was just too bad. John As far as I am concerned there's good music and bad music in all genres with a number of shades of grey between both. -Original Message- From: Niall [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 19, 2000 3:58 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] 313 Madness!! I'm sorry, I was going to keep quiet about this but I'm simply flabbergasted!! I've been away for the past week on a short holiday and, deliberately, not been near a computer to check my mailbox. I left the discussions with everyone raving about the overall success of the DEMF as well as offering constructive insights as to how improvements could be made and how certain performances were "better" than others in some very valid opinions. Lots of excitement and a general buzz around the D and where we're all heading with it. (Big cheers to Bill VanLoo for a particularly excellent report!) I return today to a load of...shite (frankly) about racism, trance, gabber/hardcore and the "death of Detroit"?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I have now been on this list for quite a while, but only speak up when I'm really moved to say something...this is now: Racism - never heard such shite in my life. When I'm in a record shop I'm focusing on the sound of the record, the music, the funk. I often have no idea who has made the record, where they come from or what they look like - it makes absolutely no difference! Yes, I agree that the most influential techno (and house) has come from black artists, but who gives a fuck? Let's just remember a certain techno producer's definition of techno as "like Kraftwerk and George Clinton stuck in an elevator...", that says it all for me...integration, acceptance, innovation - NO BARRIERS. Gabber/Hardcore - Detroit music is not just about clubland. Techno has always had a wider definition than other forms of "dance music" in my opinion. Yes, it has its basis and general market on the dancefloor, but one of the reasons I am so passionate about techno is that it is transcends that environment...think Galaxy to Galaxy, Icon, just about all of Songs of Food and Revolutionary Art. Unlike all this stupidly hard and fast hardcoresque stuff, you don't need to be pumped full of amphetamine (or worse) or any other drug to get it. Music affects a person on many levels and dancing is a spontaneous expression of all those emotions. If the "music" is only intended as a pulsating, hard as fuck, agressive kick-drum, then that's all the emotion you'll get. Mr Dance Extasy (ha ha), I really am not in the business of dissing people and consider myself open minded about ALL forms of music, but you are simply a sad, drugged-up little boy and have no place to comment on music as you evidently don't understand it, any of it. Trance - seems that ship is now sinking anyway. Trance is just crap pop music (in my opinion), now in the hands of the corporates and trundled out to club ponses who go to these "super-clubs" to be seen and admired with the music as some insignificant factor in the precedings. No soul, no funk, just one blue print track that everyone clones to their own String-pad preset (no. 1 usually) on the latest Korg trance machine, as they've only owned for 1 week, after seeing Paul Van Dyk miming with one on Top of the Pops. Death of Detroit music - Stagnant for the past 9 years, I'm not even going to merit that kind of blanket ignorance with a response...you all know. As for our friend that doesn't seem to know the difference between trance and techno; stop whinging, open your ears, shut your mouth and you might learn. The thing that's so compelling about real techno, I think, is that you can't define it. There are no rules, just innovation and a relentless, creative search for new ideas. It seems to me that techno has taken influences from all overthe world

Whoops, ambient releases, esp. ambient stuff. That's like two times the same thing. Aarggh, it's Monday and you don't have to tell me why I hate that. Gaetek is in fact Gaetano Parisio and he's Italian for sure (Napels). I did an interview with him some time ago for Bassic Groove and his English was a bit funny. Those who are interested can get the answers to the interview sent to them (for personal use only of course). RE: [313] Hell or Afrika Bambaataa
I tend to agree. Dj Hell is very special. But he looks like hell! I'm a techno-affectionado, but I also like Busta Rhymes. That intro to Extinction Level Event (about the year 2000 and all the evil that will come from it) is the gloomiest intro I've ever heard and I have used it on several occasions to start off a mix. On the >other hand, there has been numerous occasions where Helll has ripped me a >new arsehole. I very much doubt if that was the intention - if you've followed Bambaataa's career really closely or read interviews you'll understand that he doesn't see music in terms of segregation and he probably believes that what Aerosmith and Guns And Roses do arises from the blues, which was Black culture, so he is probably trying to show people the source of much of our popular culture. He promotes diversity and open-mindedness. That's his platform. The same dialectic was at work when he took Kraftwerk - inspired by James Brown - and turned it into Planet Rock. That said, I can't stand those 80s rock bands and I wouldn't want to listen to them. DJ Hell is one of my absolute favourite DJs and has his own unique 'gigolo' style - a mix of Germanic and US influences with the almost camp aesthetic/humour of Kraftwerk. He plays lots of electro and the occasional disco through to Mills. He is just fabulous. If you haven't seen him before, I would recommend him. There isn't anything wrong with Busta Rhymes either, commercial or not. :) He is an innovator - and Hell is a fan of his, actually. Play track 6 on Busta's last LP and tell me that intro doesn't sound like Millsian techno. You could cut that up that intro into a quick mix very easily. But, alas, I digress. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's a thorn in the eye of many artists in Detroit (and people everywhere) that the established music industry tries to promote acts like yours who are in fact more rock oriented (at least what image and all is concerned) while that same industry doesn't give a sh*t about the artists who are the real innovators. You are bound to get negative reactions on a list like 313 that is mainly for Detroit techno-minded people. Sorry for lashing out, but please try to include some 'native' artists on the next record release party. And I'm not talking about Moby! Hopes this clears things out a little, John Hmm, could someone back me up on this? -Original Message- From: Gwendal Cobert [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2000 3:27 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] RECORD RELEASE PARTY oh oh... RE: [313] RECORD RELEASE PARTY
I must agree. This is exactly the kinda thing they want the American public to dig while they try to shut up the black techno community who gave bith to this fantastic music we all love so much. I'm not against this music, but if they want people to shut their eyes to what's happening in their backyard, that's cruel. Hi Mike, Just for the record: Johno is my e-mail addy since there are two Johns here at the office. So it's John without the extra 'o'. My grandmother used to call me that when I was little so ... Coming to da D
Hi everybody, My girlfriend and I are coming to Detroit from Thursday 25 may and we'll leave for Chicago on Tuesday or Wednesday. Are there listmembers who are interested in embarking on a exchange programme? ;-) We have just moved to our little house in the city of Ghent (Belgium). Anyone who is willing to have us in their home for a few days will be treated the same way when they come to Belgium. We'll be going to the festival and we also want to see some of the places which have been (and are) important in the history and development of the music we love so much. Record shopping and some clubbing (Motor, Science) and maybe some interviews will be on the schedule as well. I've also heard that you can't just go to Submerge and drop in... Who do I contact to be able to visit Submerge? It will be part of the Detroit-special I'm going to do for Bassic Groove magazine. I have more things on my mind, but can't think of them; it's just too hot here and my head hurts from the weekend ;-) Hope to hear from some list members soon, John Osselaer P.S. Quite a number of people want to meet up with us at the festival. Can you mail me again privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'll try to scan some pictures tonight so I can mail them to you. At least you'll know how my girlfriend and I look. No, not like ghouls, thank you :-) P.P.S. For those having us over: We'll throw in some famous Belgian chocolates. Now if that ain't blackmail...

A lot, and I mean A *LOT* of people that are into the music today started to attend parties (well, maybe not in the same format) and clubs at a very early age. I can't really judge the present scene you are talking about, but I can say one thing: 'Watch out that drugs and violence don't take over the scene (any scene!). Here in Belgium things were really getting out of hand around 1992, 1993. Too much drugs! The Belgian authorities came down pretty hard on Belgian club life, closing down most of the big clubs, some of which never reopened their doors. I can tell you one thing: the scene would never be the same again. I've outgrown the clubscene a little, but the police and government won't make a distinction between the seperate scenes or styles when things get out of hand and they begin to come down on the party people. In France the whole dance scene was oppressed by a pretty much right wing police for years. Ask Laurent Garnier who has done quite a lot to overcome this! Getting exposed to music and culture is great, but getting exposed to nitrous, K, dirty E, GHB and other sketchy behavior isn't that good for a young female teen. Look at Richie Hawtin's recent parties such as Epok. People are still tripping and rolling, but at least it isn't being done in public, there is an age limit and he runs things responsibly. He's learned his lessons. I would have no problem sending my kid to a party if I knew things were legit. And at most Detroit parties, it's come to the point where the police are even getting paid off. Shit, I went to this afterhours club called Jesters two weekends ago, where policemen in uniform were doing balloons and partying with strippers! No lie. The golden era of rave has ODed. Time to bury it and start over. > > PS - I also want to know why more people do not support the Detroit's club > scene more. While everyone was getting busted on Saturday, they missed an > excellent bust-free night at Science. > And Ben's totally on point here also. Sure, there may not be free drugs being offered at Science, but the club offers the same salient attributes such as DJs and lights. And Science even offer things most raves don't such as bathrooms, clean seating, security, a reasonable admission price, good DJs, safety, water and the reassuring knowledge that the police aren't going to shut the club down and beat people in the process. It just seems logical to me. Pay $30 to party at the Theater on Harper and Van Dyke or pay $10 to party at Science. It seems like an easy choice to me. Also, Shane from Plurkids is a friend of mine, and this is by no means a dis on him. I just think people are tripping on these rave/news stories for the wrong reasons. > -Original Message- > From: Shane from PLURkids [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2000 10:49 AM > To: 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: (313) Online petition at > http://www.petitiononline.com/plur/petition.html > > > Hi all, > > > This last weekend in Detroit it was like 1515 Broadway all over again. > Mid-week there had been another one of those "look where your children are > at on saturday night!" reports on the news. RE: (313) marco corola and whistle 3/da D
Hi, um, Renegade Rhythms-dude, ;-) You've got yourself a date :-) At this pace I will have to hook up with half Detroit, Holland and some guys from Chicago. Hope to make some new friends!! At the moment I'm still awaiting a message from Dennis Donohue, who is friendly enough to let me and my girlfriend stay at his place when we are in Chicago. Maybe we could also stay at his parents cottage near Detroit, but that's not sure. I'm moving towards the idea of posting a plea to the Detroiters for having us over (in exchange for a place to crash when they come to Belgium) because Dennis will at the best only be able to let us stay there for the weekend and we arrive on Thursday and plan to leave for Chicago on Tuesday or Wednesday. I guess this will all get too complicated and Dennis is already doing enough as it is. He's great for being so generous and I hope we can welcome him and his fiance in our house in Belgium soon. The whole idea of asking people to have us over originated in the experiences some listmembers had (esp. the Dutchies). It's a great way for young people to save some money and get a firstclass guide around. I hope I'll manage to find a place before the end of next week because our holiday is coming closer. The money I can save will be blown on records, t-shirts and other memorablia. Keep well and see you soon, John P.S. I'll be receiving some nice pictures of my girlfriend and myself this week. Normally I'm the kinda guy who doesn't really like to get on a picture and I always put on a funny/scarry face. This time around it might prove helpfull to have some decent pictures to mail to the listmembers who want to hook up. At least you'll know you aren't hooking up with some gouls... or you just might... ;-) Home mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm almost outahere so don't be surprised if I don't reply till tomorrow. -Original Message- From: Renegade Rhythms [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2000 7:30 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (313) marco corola and whistle 3 John, It's a large indoor event going on in Pensylvania basically a big rave. RE: (313) adam beyer in detroit
I like Cari Lekebusch better than Adam Beyer for exactly the same reason. While Adam has a tendancy to focus on hard beats and loops Cari also adds interesting sounds, effects, twists and turns. I must admit that the last album by Beyer was already better, but still I feel a bit sorry I bought it because it remains there in my record boxes. It's a feeling that crept onto me the last two years; I don't buy all this hardlooped stuff anymore unless it has something special that makes it unique and inspiring. A good example are some tracks by Alessandro F on Kobayashi and the label in general. I also liked the new album by James Ruskin: Point 2. It should be in the stores by now. I also am lucky to have received an advanced copy of 'Against Nature' by Karl -Regis- 'O Connor and Peter - Female- Sutton. Needs checking! John -Original Message- From: Hodgson, S. R. RE: (313) Underground Resistance question
Hi Jason, I've received The Rough Guide To Techno (Thanks Tim, excellent job!) yesterday and thanks to that nice piece of work I can answer question A) about Mills. Don't mind if I already use a quote (?): 'In 1992, however, Mills decided to accept the offer of a residency at Peter Gatien's Limelight club in New York, effectively ending the duo's collaborative efforts and leaving Banks to continue under the UR banner alone.' Taken from The Rough Guide To Techno by Tim Barr. Ok, just checked the part on Robert Hood and here's an answer to the second question. Another quote from tRGtT: "Along with Alan Oldham (Dj T-1000), Robert Hood (then knows as Rob Noise) was an early recruit to the fledgling Underground Resistance organisation. Operating as self-styled 'ministers of information', Oldham and Hood constructed press releases, mission statements and took care of whatever day-to-day business came their way. As The Vision, Hood later became an integral part of the UR infrastructure, adopting the role of MC for the group's live shows and contributing to releases such as the Riot EP, 'The Punisher' and X-102 Discovers the Rings of Saturn (1992). During the same period, his first solo release as The Vision, 'Gyroscopic', also emerged on the UR label." Taken from tRGtT by Tim Barr. You see folks, this book is really worth the attention. Get it soon! John -Original Message- From: Jason Birchmeier [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2000 11:53 PM To: detroit Subject: (313) Underground Resistance question I'm writing a biographical piece on the group's music for my independant study and am curious about the early contributions by Jeff Mills and Robert Hood. A) when exactly did Mills stop collaborating with Banks? It sounds as though he was involved with the X-101 record (UR-013.5) but I'm guessing he left the group shortly after. I haven't heard many of the releases following X-101 except for MIA (UR-018) and Message to the Majors (UR-21) so it's hard for me to guess. B) was Hood ever that involved? He obviously was involved with the Gyroscopic record and I've heard rumors of him participating on the Riot record, but again I really don't have any idea about how involved he was after that. I'm going under the assumption that neither Mills nor Hood had anything to do with UR once they started Axis. It's hard to tell exactly when this was because so many of the UR records don't list a date. Any input would is appreciated. RE: (313) Shoutcast stream with high Detroit content
Hi Greg, How long do you stay in Amsterdam? There's a lot going on there the next few days. The Dutchies on the list will be able to help you out even better, but I remember Jeff Mills is playing in A'dam on Thursday (Melkweg). There are lots of parties on Saturday, but I recommend the Awakeningsparty in the Gashouder (it's an old gasworks, you actually party in an old gascontainer). It's the top in Holland as far as technoparties are concerned. Check: http://www.awakenings.nl Shit, just remembered that it's has been sold out for weeks. Still worth trying though! Have fun in Amsterdam! Check out the red light district and don't go sober for a day ;-) John -Original Message- From: Greg Earle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 25, 2000 3:44 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: (313) Shoutcast stream with high Detroit content If you're like me, you crave hearing Detroit music on the Web, but hate crappy low-rate Real Audio stuff, especially if you're on a phatpipe like me! I found this last night. Plug the URL into WinAMP or MacAST or SoundJam or : Club Music http://cr791975-a.ktchnr1.on.wave.home.com:8000/ (a.k.a. http://24.42.5.254:8000/ at the moment) It's a 44 KHz, 128 Kbps high-speed Shoutcast MP3 stream that has a lot of Detroit content ... I've been listening to it for a couple of hours now and I've heard Mills, Mills remixes, Carl Craig, Carl Craig remixes, DJ Hell stuff (Mills remixes and other stuff), and so on ... it's great! In case the IP address changes, you can get at it pretty easily from going to the Shoutcast home page, selecting the "By Genre" menu and pulling it down to "Techno", then clicking on the "Bitrate" link on the page that comes up. This should take you to the following (direct) URL: http://yp.Shoutcast.COM/?genre=Techno&orderby=bitrate Look near the top and you should see it (because it's high rate) - it's #6 right now on this page as I type this. Off to Amsterdam in 34 hours ... woot! Enjoy, - Greg - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: (313) Betr.: Re: (313) Axis 9
I got really lucky. I found it in an old record crate underneath the normal record boxes in store that isn't specialized in techno. I saw a record with a black label on one side and a gold on the other. My hart bounced and I quickly looked to the inscriptions in the record. Woohoo!! It cost me about 5$ because it came from the old records crate and nobody knew what gem I was holding. I even have the Axis 009A double and the other copy did only cost about 7$. That's real thrill, buying these records for such a price!! I recall paying about $ 30 US for a 2nd hand AXIS 9 but yeah I *was* thrilled! W >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 19-04-2000 16:29:23 >>> Mills said in an interview that if a record is harder to find, it makes it more of a thrill when you *do* find it, thus he made sure that these two records weren't easy to get. andrew duke [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > There is Axis 9A and Axis 9B, both quite hard to find, especially here in > Europe. RE: (313) Axis 9
It's a pitty all those releases got deleted. Axis 6 is still very much wanted here. I'm one of the lucky bastards who has got it. Especially the track 'Suspense' burns the dancefloor. I was wondering if these deleted items still can be found in Detroit record shops? John -Original Message- From: underground fighters [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2000 2:58 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Axis 9 If I remember me the 9A was release through Fat Cat (95?) and later (97?) the 9B through Hardwax. The records don't have the same tracks, but it's the same style. Is the 9b a remix of the 9a or the second part of a project that's a good question. There is also two Axis 6, one deleted with Rob Hood (93?) and the second only with Jeff Mills (98?). The Axis 3 and 7 produced from Rob Hood are now deleted.
