Re: (313) Moby assualt in Boston
Hey, I didn't want to interfere in all this, but in Fred's defense, he never insulted Tom's kid. He only attacked Tom about his mental state (and I happen to agree with him), being in such a bad shape he would run the risk of his kid getting taken away from him by the authorities or something along those lines. I agree that's harsh, but Tom's not exactly in need of pity here and if anything is not insulting to Tom's kid, but Tom himself. On 27-aug-2006, at 21:56PM, J.T. wrote: Re: my approach to Tom. This was something I had been looking forward to for a while. Once things got underway, Theo took control. He started off by playing Stevie Wonder's 'As' and talking about how Lil' Louis played the track at a club in Chicago when Theo was 15 or 16 and how it blew his mind because he was used to just thinking of that track as something he sang with his mom. Theo was full of stories from his days in Chicago and Detroit and every track he would play seemed to put it in a new light for me. I think the lecture went on for over 3 hours. Theo was opening up about everything, from talking about going to college for art, to DJing and production work. It was definitely something special to hear Theo today. etc... seek jurren baars wrote: most of you will probably have allready spotted this, but there is now a video up on http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com of theo parrish's lecture during this year's red bull music academy. it is supposed to be an interesting lecture (can't comment myself, as i only get to see the video, somehow audio doesn't work...) so enjoy. jurren

Re: (313) Portable .WAV recorder ? for livesets/mixes (OT!)
Just received this in the mail: http://www.geminidj.com/news_ikey.html Considering the brand, I don't expect too much of this. You still need an additional storage device (it should be possible to use an iPod for this) and if you do want to convert to mp3, the highest bitrate is only 256 Kbps. But if you want to record to wav and you already have an iPod or similar device, this could work. You still couldn't play back the wav directly on the iPod, but that's just a matter of connecting it to your computer and importing it through iTunes. In the mail I received it had a suggested retail price of approx 200 euros which I think is way too expensive for a device like this. Don't have a clue about US prices though. On 25 Aug, 2005, at 9:48 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Police Raid Outdoor Music Event by Parker Pinette Monday August 22, 2005 at 04:30 AM [EMAIL PROTECTED] Numerous accounts from attendees of an outdoor electronic music event in Utah county indicate excessive force used by Sherrif and SWAT officers. A video has surfaced depicting officers dressed in full military fatigues raiding the main stage of the event. Local news stations side with police in initial reports. Attendees of the outdoor electronic music event dubbed Versus II taking place the evening of Saturday, August 20th in the Diamond Fork area of Spanish Fork Canyon in Utah County arrived at the event with confidence that the concert organizers had obtained the proper permits and legal clearance to hold the event. Personal accounts available at the local electronic community websiteutrave.org paint a scene of police brutality and mayhem, many accounts bearing eyewitness to the forceful arrest of young girls. Reports state that at approximately 11:30pm upwards of 90 officers, many wearing full camouflage gear, gathered from Sherrif and SWAT departments in surrounding areas stormed the previously peaceful gathering dedicated to music and dance. At least 1 helicopter was dispatched, along with large tranport vehicles designated for both officers and detainees. Numerous statements from attendees indicate excessive force being exerted by many officers. Inuries including mild to severe bruises and cuts have been reported by party goers as young as age 17. The Utah County Sherrif's Office has expressed a long term vendetta against what they call Rave parties. Statements from the Sherrif's office as well as eyewitness accounts make it clear that this was a premeditated attack on the promoters and community supporting these events. While the Sherrif's office has stated that many drugs and pieces of paraphernalia were obtained, they fail to note how many of the 60+ citations were for drug violations. Many accounts indicate the majority of citations and arrests were for resisting arrest. The Sherrif's office states that the party was raided on the grounds of failure to obtain a mass gathering permit for an event hosting more than 250 attendees. Reports vary as to the number in attendance, estimation ranging from 250 to 1,400. Controversy exists as to whether a mass gathering permit was actually obtained, however, a Health Department permit was obtained, and hired security and emergency medical service personnel were on site. Many eyewitness accounts indicate that officers singled out party goers attempting to document the events on camcorders, cameras and camera phones. Victims have claimed that officers knocked cameras out of the hands of the owner, even confiscating some. Luckily, one video has surfaced, and is quickly spreading across the internet, as well as being featured by at least one local news station. The video clearly displays a large number of officers dressed in full camouflage fatigues, some brandishing rifles. In the higher quality version of the video, which includes sound, it is apparent that the use of a taser was employed. While the video is somewhat unclear at times, the viewer can plainly see an officer atop a young girl fully subdued on the ground on her stomach; he swings on her at least twice, as more officers rush forward to manhandle the girl. It is clear that many others were subdued using similar levels of force. Initial reports from local news stations side with the Sherrif's Office, one anchor calling the event a drug party without batting an eye. Reports tend to focus on the drugs and paraphernalia acquired by police, rather than the obvious violation of civil liberties reported by those in attendance and depicted by the amateur video, which has been provided to all major local news agencies. Surprisingly, the local Fox News affiliate Fox 13 seemed to give the most unbiased report, stating that many attendees had reported excessive force, as well as showing the official media response from the Utah County Sherrif's Office. Clips of the previously mentioned video were also shown. Other news agencies have gone along with the Sherrif's Office in painting a picture of drugs, guns, and sexual assault running rampant at electronic music events in general, and especially this one. KUTV Channel 2 News blatantly inferred that the hired security was merely in place to prevent the sale of drugs by anyone but the event organizers. All major reports restate the claim made by the Sherrif's department that a

Re: (313) Planet-E Bootlegs?
Well bootlegging is one thing, but what HTFR is doing isn't bootlegging, it's counterfeiting. It's no different from what's happening to Rolex watches and Louis Vuitton bags. Only where Asians are producing cheap, low quality knockoffs because of otherwise very expensive originals, HTFR are producing very expensive low quality knockoffs because of otherwise unavailable originals. For Rolex and LV I can understand it's difficult to find the culprits. But for Carl, Derrick and all the others who have been ripped off by these crooks, it should be quite a lot easier. They know exactly who they are And it's not that they're so p*ss poor they can't afford a lawyer are they? Especially when it's such a clear case theyre going to win. So why they haven't done anything yet is beyond me. Let's hope it's only a matter of time. After reaching a peak in 1999 with 1.5 million ravers grooving through the streets of the German capital, the event gradually ran out of steam and its management said it was unable to find enough sponsors to fund the July event. Sabine Bremermann of the Love Parade Ltd said plans for the street party were now being revamped with the aim of winning fresh backing to stage it in the summer of 2006. We will do everything we can, in cooperation with the city-state of Berlin, industry and the media, to find a way to make a comeback the year of the World Cup in Germany, she said. Germany is hosting the World Cup from June 9 to July 9 next year. South Korean electronics giant Samsung recently cancelled as a sponsor and the Berlin daily Tagesspiegel reported that Germany's T-Mobile had also pulled out. The Love Parade blamed Berlin's ailing economy for the sponsors' flight but officials from the city-state government said the organizers had failed to change with the times. After starting small in West Berlin in 1989 the summer before the Berlin Wall fell, the party grew with the craze in electronic music and helped make Berlin the techno capital of the world. Spin-offs were launched in Switzerland, Israel, Mexico and the United States but Berlin remained the mecca for the world's ravers. While the organizers used to leave Berlin to pick up the costs of the parade by claiming the event was a political demonstration, a court ruled in 2001 that it was a commercial venture and liable for the expenses. The cancellation comes just days after the legendary dance club Tresor shut its doors after 13 years as a fixture of Berlin nightlife. He felt that he and Dimitri Hegemann from Tresor did a bad job back in the early Nineties because he pleaded guilty for conditioning people to consume Techno in dark boxes full of fog and strobes and didn't consider making it nicer for girls (which is, in his opinion, the reason why there are not so many girls embracing Techno)... We had a really long discussion and he admitted that he sometimes feels really removed from his audience. He said he'd never consume drugs because he would hate to put his company - and the people working for him - at risk... I don't think he is greedy... I think he is striving to be a real artist, sound- and concept-wise, that is accepted by educated people. This is, in my opinion, the reason, why he tries to employ these pseudo-intellectual, pseudo-philosophical thoughts on his sleeves written in bad English (which of course, are more expensive to make). Although he has done Metropolis and a lot of groundbreaking other projects, he is not really really accepted in the realms of high art, especially not in North America where a Techno artist would never reach the status of social acceptance he longs for. In Europe and Japan, people roll out the red carpet... here, he is the person who single-handedly established Techno in Berlin (well, at least that's what Dimi and Jeff both want to believe - themselves - and which is impossible to prove or disprove). I guess the things I just mentioned are integral parts of his personality and that might explain why he tries to make his label a sought-after commodity rather than being down with the locals. Drug-mongering simple minds are just not his thang as he was working hard enough to transcend this stage of low human existance and I think he likes to see himself as a man of class and style - certainly the way he dresses and the hotels he chooses. Okay, that was the psychological analysis from da Kat :) who sat on the mat and is a big fan of Jeff as a human. I think I saw David Bowie on TV the other day saying something like: you know that something is really going wrong when an industry starts sueing it's own customers. RE: (313) Vestax or Technics
My 2 cts in this discussion: Since 7 months I have two Vestax PDX 2000 at home after using Technics for about 13 years. It was some getting used to at first. They have more power than the 1200, so you have to use a little more force to slow down or speed up the platter. Also, the pitch control fader is very light, which I don't like (the only thing). Whereas with a technics pitch, you actually have the feeling you are sort of pushing the record to a slower speed, with the vestax fader there is no friction whatsoever, so it's fairly easy to accidentaly tip the fader a little bit up or down while mixing. The straight tone arm does wonders against skipping and for scratching, although I totally suck at that, but I'm making progress very slowly. The ultra pitch and the reverse button are nice gadgets, but no more than that. I occasionally use them to create effects when recording a mix. I still have to find a purpose of the quartz lock button and I really don't understand why Technics persists on including this on the newer models as well. If anyone can explain to me what this functionality is good for, please do! However, I've noticed that I'm actually faster on a technics now. Don't know what the reason is, the higher force of the platter or the +- 10 pitch control, but the difference is significant (Jeff Mills watch your back ;-) ) The argument that everywhere technics are used so you should buy those too is a bit nonsense. When I start playing somewhere with technics, at first I brake or speed up a bit too fast, but that takes just a few seconds to get used to. Well before I throw the first record in it's all business as usual. So in short, it doesn't make much difference what you buy. I bought mine because I see the vestax as progress and I hate the placing of the on/off button of the technics and the fact that the needle often skips too easily (although that can easily be solved by bringing your own cartidges to a gig). The vestax also seem to have less problems with feedback (rumble). As far as durability goes, hard to say after 6 months home use mostly, but at least they feel even more robust than 1200's to me and with that magnetic motor, there's not much that can wear out. On the other hand, how many 1200's do you encounter where the light is still working? I'm happy with them and I wouldn't trade them in for technics. I've heard good things about the Vestax decks (e.g reverse function, plus/minus 16 capacity) but their seems to be a big question surrounding how durable they actually are. Apparently Technics have just released a MK5 version as well (albeit minus a reverse function). Would be interested in hearing other peoples opinions. RE: (313) The techno/trance divide - reprise?
Not only can you make a distinction in the melody but the type of sounds being used. Disagree; trance borrows a lot of it's sounds from techno. I disagree early Detroit techno sounds like a fusion of Kraftwerk/ Euro dance with Chicago house. Could you name some examples? Of course I know Juan, Derrick and all were definately influenced by Kraftwerk, but I don't hear that so directly in their production. Ok maybe their sounds were used a lot, but definately not their way of composing. It wasn't revolutionary to Western music. It's music that came from the drum machine era, the drum machine and sequencer more or less influenced the techno sound. Disagree again, a lot of music was already using drum machines and sequencers for years. hi-nrg, new wave, italo, house. But all that music still consisted of songs. You know, chorus, refrain, chorus. Acid house and later techno were the first to break from that tradition. Trance and progressive is basically an update to the 80's Euro dance/ Hi-NRG music although you do hear the influence of techno and house with the use of the TR-909. Take the vocals out of Erasure, the music Vince Clarke pioneered and you hear the similarities. I think you're confusing trance with electroclash here. this seems to be a common trend. I still enjoy the occasional hard banging techno track with innovative elements like Switched On Blades. Techno is like an outcast amongst the dance genres a lot of people fall back on 'house' or retro dance music like electro or Italo-disco conforming to trend and conventionalism because they lack vision when it comes to futuristic abstract music. Or the techno records that are being released are simply not that revolutionary anymore so they start looking for other stuff that can trigger their needs. And they realise that because they were almost exclusively listening to techno over all those years, they neglected some great other types of music. So they simply want to catch up. In my case it doesn't have anything to do with the nostalgia trend. Regarding electro and house it's much more about (re)discovery. I still listen to a lot of hard techno. I just hardly buy anything form detroit anymore. German producers like Ricardo Villalobos, Heiko Laux or Alter ego are much more groundbreaking nowadays.
RE: (313) The techno/trance divide - reprise?
I remember that, for a while, the snare rolls, big breakdowns, 303 lines and druggy chords that later came to characterise trance had permeated deeply into more pure techno. That Access track would get played at proper techno nights and, for the first few months at least, no-one would particularly bat an eyelid. Now these techniques were all very effective on the dancefloor, and after a while audiences were demanding to hear that sort of stuff all the time. Some techno DJs I know pretty much capitulated, with snare rolls every five minutes, but they still saw themselves as being techno. Because this works better on the floor and is more popular with club audiences, said some of these guys, this is the stuff that will stick around. That noodly stuff you play isn't really techno at all! In my view, the main characteristic difference between trance and techno has always been: melody. In techno generally the only real melody (if you follow the pure definition of what a melody is) you are going to find is in the bassline (if even). For the rest the music is composed of layer on top of layer of different rhythms of sounds at one or two pitches. (ok, ok, basically a rhythm of two tones is already a melody, but you will understand what I'm getting at) In a lot of cases these layers create a melody of it's own, but that's not what I mean with a real melody. Trance (and to a lesser extend house!) doesn't have that. The music is much more traditional to the extend that there is mostly a clear melody in the mid range. That's also why techno was so different from other western music, when it originated. The only music where you find a similar way of composing, is ethnic music. Another big aspect of techno (and early Chicago house/acid) and as such very often different from trance, is that techno tries to evolve, tries to bring something new, tries to bring something that has never been heard before, tries to trigger strong emotions in people by surprising them. Now for a time, snare rolls, big breakdowns, 303 lines and such were new and triggered these strong emotions in people and were part of real techno. Trance is much more oriented towards pleasing the audience, trying to bring something that people already like to hear, trying to produce sounds that the majority of the people perceive as beautiful, dreamy soundscapes. Techno has evolved on and moved to several newer levels. Trance still uses the snare rolls, 'cause they work. Now of course it's all still music and not exact science, so there will be plenty of examples of techno with melodies and trance without, and good and revolutionary trance and bad boring techno. But generally speaking you can (I at least) see the broader distinctions. That's also why I don't want to stick to one genre and I really like certain trance records (although not recently ;-) )and dislike certain techno records. As the music evolved I evolved with it. I used to love the stuff from Misjah, later that of the Liberators, again later that of Adam Beyer, Gaetek, Marco Carola. But that's all in the past. When I listen to it at home, I still like the sound in a nostalgic kind of way. I would never play it out again though (or it should be some revival thing). Now, I'm more into deephouse, Detroit house and electro (as so many old F*cks like me), no idea if that will stay forever. What are these guys now? They're trance DJs. Basically there are two kinds of DJ's. The DJ that purely wants to please the audience and give them what they want to hear and what they like best. The DJ that has the clear need to be loved and the need to be popular. And the DJ who wants to bring the audience something new and surprising. Again, of course we are all a combination of these two profiles, but we are either on one side or the other. We all like to be on stage and get the cheers, but that is different from needing it. The first kind will not take any risks when playing and go with the flow of whichever is hot at the time. The second kind will explore the boundaries and set the new trends, but will never be as popular as the first kind. Trance DJ's tend to be more of the first kind, techno DJ's you'll find in both. Although there are enough trance dj's like Tiësto who genuinely love that music (whom I consider a good dj, although I totally gag on his taste in music) and who have not jumped on the bandwagon like Pete Tong and such who will just hop on the next one when it comes along . my 2 eurocents Joost

He's a guy from Holland who was pretty active in the New Beat scene. He still DJ's under the name DJ Thimbles. Just as long as I got you was my favorite house/new beat track for a long time. That drum rhtythm was so wild at that time! I guess 101 did nothing else but release house and techno covers. It may be stealing, but at least it got all those beauties heard over here. Altough they might have slowed it down a bit slower for that typical New Beat- beat. :) The interesting thing is that Saunderson was apparently a fan of the New Beat sound, so maybe he liked the fact that they did his track? Also listed in the early RS discog is 'Baby Wants To Ride' by B-Art (who were they, anyway?) - seems the odd cover of US house/techno/acid was quite acceptable there then. TOM

RE: [313] FiNal ScrAtch - finally roadtested...
Wether you want it or not, when you are playing somewhere where the music is loud, you will always have feedback. No matter how well you isolate your turntable. In fact, isolating the decks is to prevent rumble not feedback. The needle will pick up all kinds of vibration. Just put a record on, don't let it spin, and tap with your finger somewhere on the turntable. You will definately hear this amplified. So when the needle picks up the bass vibrations from the speakers, this is feedback. You can even shout to the needle when it's on a (stopped) record and if you record that you will hear it. You can already hear the difference when playing vinyl and CDs. CDs sound less deep on the dancefloor. Joost -Original Message- From: Langsman, Marc [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: donderdag 19 september 2002 16:32 To: 'Ploegmakers, Joost'; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] FiNal ScrAtch - finally roadtested... remark in this whole discussion however. One great aspect about playing music from vinyl is feedback; the amplified music, specifically bass, reflects back on the record and gets picked up by the needle again and amplified again. Too much feedback leads to rumble, but just enough creates this fat deep bass sound we're all so addicted on. Final scatch can never recreate this, since the records don't contain the actual music. realistically do you actually configure your decks so you get bass feedback ? Most places Ive played try and isolate the decks to avoid this. In fact I dont think Ive ever seen anyone with a set up designed to leverage any bass feedback - how could you ever ensure the feedback was stable ?? If you were that bothered you could always pre-process your mp3's with some feedback I guess ? -- This message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the designated recipient(s) named above. RE: [313] another causality
I find this all very much a shame and a pity. I see the wrong people bashing on each other. It's not Hell's fault this electroclash hype trash thing is happening. It's MoS and the UK media that are to blame. They (MoS) invested a pile of money in Fisherspooner and in order to get their investment working, had their marketing machine working full throttle. And the media swollowed it like candy. Finally they had something juicy to write about, a new hype to create! And guess what, in a year or so they can all write it off as passé again, wow. Ok, maybe Hell likes to pose here and there a bit. But Ferenc has his own little habits too. I sure didn't hear him complaining when Space invaders got chosen record of the year in Germany '99. Besides, you're not telling me they all suddenly stopped making music now... Little PR stunt maybe? This is just not right. Joost -Original Message- From: Jongsma, K.J. Hi Otto, yes you are right. But still they shouldn't blame it all on the wrong people. This scene is already too small to turn it into a I am more underground than you contest. IMHO they should just continue what they like doing best. And if in a few months they are being dismissed as sooo passé then pity for those losers. Maybe they just don't want to be part of the Spectacle The main problem IMO is that 'their' sound has been adopted by people with relatively more marketing-skills than musical talent (unfortunately the two rarely go together). This makes the sound go into a direction they're not happy with. That would've been fine in itself (after all, everyone is entitled to their own taste) as long as they're not getting drawn into that. But now everything vaguely related is quickly labeled electroclash, including the people who strongly feel that they don't belong there at all. *That* is the real problem. It is a problem in particular because once this fad is over, the original electro artists will have a much harder time getting their music out there because they'll be dismissed quite easily by the media and punters: 'that sound is so passe, dahlin'... Otto PS This whole situation is nothing new BTW, the same thing happened when the harder Detroit techno sounds of Cybersonik, UR and Mills got mutated into gabba. Other examples are the UK hardcore - drum 'n bass split or when tech-house started to overlap with progressive house (like Circulation getting spun by Sasha and Digweed for instance). RE: [313] off topic but fun nonetheless/acid
So it's not acid house if there's distortion on the 303?? That's adding a little too much narrowmindedness to the genre I think Acid is a feeling, just as house is ;-) personally, I wouldn't know how to really define acid house, but it sure isn't the 303 = acid equasion. There's plenty of brilliant acid around without the 303. Maurice Joshua's - I got a big d*ck as one of the best examples. And as far as distortion goes, like it or not, but Bang the Acid is still acid. Maybe you don't think it's great and it's not from the 80's or from Chicago or sounds like Phuture. It is absolutely great. If you have the chance to visit, go! Definately worth it. I visited some years ago (when it was still called 10 days of techno) and I loved it. Great laid back atmosphere, nice people, no rave feeling whatsoever. And the music, well, you only had to look at the line up to know enough. Will probably be the same this year. RE: [313] RE: (313) Hawtin vs. Sven
Hi, I believe you guys are missing an important aspect here. We are talking about PARTIES here. Parties are supposed to be fun and the DJ should just as much be a part of the party as the crowd is. DC clearly is not. He acts as if it's only a job he has to do and although it IS for him, it should be more than just showing up in time and dropping his records. Sven's attitude is not about look at how cheery I am. It's about partying together with the crowd and showing respect to the crowd by not only dropping the best tunes in the best possible build up (and making them go totally mad in the process), playing for as long as the clubowner lets him and by being on the floor before his sets, checking the atmosphere out and talking to people, even remembering when he has spoken to them before and about what! We are still an underground scene, where the stars don't need to develop arrogant attitudes and need bodyguards and all that nonsense. I had the pleasure of visiting the Rex in Paris once where Sven was playing. When I entered the club, he was standing at the bar and he approached ME asking surprised what I was doing here since I was from Holland where I'd spoken with him at a party months before. He knew that!! He immediately introduced me to Terence Fixmer who was there too. Later he played a great set in that strange DJ booth with the windows open. It was so funny to see the three lines thick of trainspotters standing there the whole time. A couple of weeks later I saw a documentary on Dutch TV about Dave Clarke. There he was also playing at the Rex. There you saw him sitting backstage the whole time before his set, by himself, looking as if he was waiting for a dentist appointment. When he came on he had no idea what the DJ before him had been doing, then the windows went shut Now there's a guy who must really love his job. A job that 1000's of others would kill for. On the subject of the Rex, if there's one DJ who constantly switches places with Sven on my most favourite list, it's Laurent Garnier... Surely the only thing that matters is that they turn up on time then proceed rock the venue with excellent records and top-notch mixing. Yes, this is the Alter Ego mix (Klang 62). It's still for sale on http://www.technovinyl.de . Not sure if they ship outside Europe though. RE: [313] Lady Aida interview @ technotourist dot org
Hi, I'm always a bit confused about how I feel on these practises. I've seen it happen before: D.J. or producer or singer gets famous easily by being friends with the right people at the right time, (sometimes good looks are are great help in this) get noticed by the larger ignorant crowd and media by playing commercial crap music and when at the righ momentum they get educated, miraculously develop a sense of taste and decide to break with the past and now all of a sudden expect the true people to take them seriously. That's the negative point of view. On the other side, the good taste was probably always there, it just needed some time to surface. And at least the person in question has seen the light (some people never do). We've seen it happen with big names like: Madonna George Michael Robbie Williams And now with 100% Isis (and I bet there are more examples from the underground) My dilemma is: I really have respect for Madonna, George and Robbie. Is there something wrong with me?
