I can add in a third method:
If you have SNMP enabled on your Remedy server, you can read the uptime
value as well as other information using SNMP.
Now that's a lot of different possibilities to choose from... right?

Hi All,

I'm running version 6.3 of ARServer under Oracle 9 on AIX, and version 6.3
of Mid-Tier on Windows 2000 in my development environment. I've just
installed Patch 20 for both, and am in the process of doing some preliminary
testing.

Remedy seems to be applying the revised schedule for 2007 for earlier years
as well. For example, it seems to be seeing March 20th 2007 as Eastern
Daylight Time (EDT), which is correct. But it seems to see March 20th 2006
as EDT as well. In 2006 EDT did not go into effect until April 2nd, so it
should see that date as Eastern Standard Time (EDT).

This is an issue for us, as we do a lot of historical reporting.

Has anyone else running 6.3 Patch 20 (or 7.1 Patch 1) noticed any problems
with Daylight Saving time calculations for 2006 or prior years?

Re: how to get Remedy ARS uptime?

2007-02-22 Thread Babineau, Robert (xwave)
You can use the driver program that comes with remedy to get the
ARServer start time in EPOCH. The driver program has a command called
gss (get server statistics). The server statistic #1 is Start Time.
By getting that value, it will return the start time of the ARS
instance.

Or you could code a C or Java program that would return this value in a
date/time format. The API route is always more flexible, but usually
more difficult.

Fourth Method: Write a perl script.

That might give you a hint in what to do. I think you could, as this article
states, open a 'filehandle' to the process, then use STAT on it to find its
uptime. This would take more research than I can do right now though. This is
just an option, but might take a little work (unless you have downloaded the
entire O'Reilly series books to your head).

Hello all,

Some time last week, the Help Desk form suddenly stopped sending out
emails to groups. Instead, the logs show that Remedy is creating one
email for only one of the group members instead of one email for each
group member. This is only happening with Help Desk - CHG, TSK, and all
of the custom apps are not experiencing this and are still sending to
all group members.

When I first had this issue, the folks in support told me to update the
email engine to patch 19, so I did, and everything was fine up until
about a week ago. I've gone through various logs and none of them have
any records of issues near the time when this first began. Has anyone
else seen this before, or have an idea of what might cause this?

I'm restarting Remedy this evening to see if that fixes it, but I'd love
to have any insight y'all can offer in case it comes up again.

try running ldd command against the library which gives the error. The command

ldd shows dynamic dependencies of executable files or shared objects.

Hopefully you will see the path it is trying to use to find the

I'm running version 6.3 of ARServer under Oracle 9 on AIX, and

I've just installed Patch 20 for both, and am in the process of doing

Remedy seems to be applying the revised schedule for 2007 for
earlier years as well. For example, it seems to be seeing March 20th

Bringing Second App Server Online

2007-02-22 Thread Soria, Joe
We are planning to bring up our second application server in the next
few days. We will have an f5 load balancer in front of the app servers.
Does anyone have experience running in a single application server
environment ...then moving to a multiple application server environment?
I want to know how much downtime was involved as well as what issues you
ran into while performing the modification. I have read over the
documentation from BMC regarding this, and am getting different stories
on how to accomplish this, also attempted to contact BMC support, and
the two people I talked to provided no insight, they simply referred me
to the same document.

We have both the mid-tier and application running on the same box. Sun
Solaris 9, ARS 6.3.

I might suggest doing this on a Friday, to allow the weekend for full
propogation of the DNS changes to your server name. It can take 24 hours or
more to do that, and you don't want the headache of resolving those issues

2007-02-22 Thread Joe DeSouza
I would suggest use of server alias. Choose this alias to be the same as the
server name of the currently up and running server, and to use that same alias
as the name of the server group. This will minimize your time spent on
instructing users regarding the change of the server name..

There is more than 1 supported method of doing what you want to do.. depends on
what you are more comfortable with... If on UNIX I personally prefer the method
where you create your armonitor.conf file in its expected path before
installation. I was given this method by an individual whose knowledge I can
trust from Remedy Support..

Re: Bringing Second App Server Online

2007-02-22 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Are you going to be utilizing the Server Groups or just a shared db?

Also how will the users be referencing the server(s)?
i.e. Users currently reference the existing server thru an alias
aliasA which will be moved the LB.

We went from a single server to a 2 server w/LB environment (shared db
not Server Group) with almost no downtime (less than 1 hour).

1st... Make sure all users access the server thru a DNS alias (so this
can be moved to the LB without changing the client User Tool settings),
and depending on the LB a TCP port as well.

2nd... Add to the servers ar.conf
The IP-Name: xxx entries for the alias (Server Name
should be different from the Alias).
 The Map-IP-Address: {LB IP} {Actual ARS IP} entry

3rd... Add to the Hosts file on the server the LB alias as an alias for
the server
(We did this do that once a user is connected to a server they
stay on that server and don't loop back thru the LB multiple times)

Install the second server as a shared server and do #s 2 and 3 on it

Fred

Re: DST - another thing.

2007-02-22 Thread Anderson, Douglas W.
Hi Claire,

You're right, of course, and not just about ARS.

The server admins (UNIX, Windows, RDBMS, etc.) here are all stretched to the
max patching for DST. I'll bet every one of those patches is just a rehash of
the prior implementation - which required patching. Given the vagaries of the
US Congress and other legislative bodies, I couldn't help thinking when this
all started that DST rules are data and ought to be externalized accordingly,
not hard-coded. Then the next time someone changes the rules, we'd only need to
swap out a data file and restart.

Ah well, maybe next time. Or maybe we ought to have filed for a patent on the
idea?

Peace,
Doug Anderson

Running arsignal does not require you to restart services but you achieve the
same results if all you want to do is re-read def files or the cache or a the
ar.conf file.. there are different signals you can issue like -g for defs and
cache, -c for a config file, -l for licenses.. etc...

If you type arsignal /? you will get all the arguments you could use with it
together with its syntax.. it does have that online help..

Re: How to apply patches?

2007-02-22 Thread Axton

There is a server-readme.txt in the patch that covers the steps to
apply the patch. You can either overwrite the files or re-run the
installer; both methods are supported; one requires the files, the
other requires the installer. Do bear in mind that 7.0 patches are
not applicable to 7.0.01 and vice versa. If you want to upgrade from
7.0 to 7.0.01, run the installer.

On 2/22/07, Mikhail Serate [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

What are the steps necessary to apply patches? Because we realized that
running the installer is not the ONLY step in applying a patch.

This was what we had: Fresh install (Jan 07) - ARS 7.0.0 p2, Mid Tier 7.0.0
p2
This is what we have: Applied patch 1 (Feb 07) - ARS 7.0.1 p1, Mid Tier
7.0.1 p1

When we applied patch 1,
1. we went to the download site
2. search patch 001 for 7.0.1
3. click on download patch
4. click on installers
5. chose midtier.exe (and downloaded this)
6. run the midtier.exe

Is this right? Did we also have to download the files folder? Do we have a
choice to download either the installer OR the files to just copy over? What
ARE the steps? Because after we did this, we got a LOT of bugs on midtier.
We downloaded just the vanilla version of ClientCore.js for both mozilla and
ie and most of the bugs flew away.

Thoughts? Advice?

Re: ARS 7.0.01 upgrade problems

2007-02-22 Thread Susan Palmer

We were coming from 5.1.2 to 7x ... did it twice because we thought we did
something wrong.

After restoring the 2nd time, we then went from 5.1.2 to 6.3 to 7.x.

The process was painful because support kept saying it was something we did
on the original upgrade. And after the usual sending of megatons of stuff
and over a week later it was determined that you needed to stop at v6
first.

What happened to us was that all the new fields on the user and groups forms
appeared on the client screen like they were there, but in actuality they
were not in the database. If you went into the admin tool they were there,
so you moved a field or even added another field and saved ... which should
have corrected any issue of not being the same ... NOT ... they were still
not in the database. Unexplainable except that once we started over and did
the extra step everything went fine.

It was frustrating and aggrevating. It took over 3 weeks to finally get it
done. Causing me to miss my production server window and now I'm still
waiting for that since last August. Worse than a Chinese puzzle!

In the active link you use to open the dialog window, add a new action
after that to do a Change Field action on the table and check the
refresh box.

2007-02-22 Thread Joe DeSouza
Brandon,

You have to define the action of refreshing the table on the same active link
that you open the dialog box with one action after.. or on another active link
that fires after the order of that active link that opens the dialog but on the
same action viz click of a button, or whatever.

DST and GMT?

2007-02-22 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CG/SCWOE
Hi everyone:

I've been out of town for the past week...I've followed the DST thread
some, but not closely enough.

So what happens if you set your live Remedy server to GMT from, say, EST
with existing tickets in the database? Time values are stored as GMT in
the database anyway, so what's the impact?

As I recall it, the client is what displays the correct time value when
it's fetched, based on the user's time zone setting in the operating
system.

So what's the catch?

Re: Simple Question, I can't remember how to do this...

2007-02-22 Thread Roney Samuel Varghese

Dear Jase,

Here's how i would achieve doing this

Create two Activelinks with the the same Execute On condition with separate
execution order.
The First Activelink will do a Open window and set a flag on Window close.
This flag will only get set when you do a commit on the dialog.
Check for a flag on the second active link. If the flag is set perform a
change field action.

Hope this helps

Bug with v7.0.1 and Crystal

2007-02-22 Thread Harbin, Erica M. (MSFC-NNM04AA02C)[SAIC]
We opened ticket with Remedy because a couple of users (3 at this point) are no
longer able to user Office 2003 and are getting this error:
Microsoft [program] has not been installed for the current user. Please run
set up to install the application.
In addition, we find that if a different user login to the affected machine,
that user is able to access the Office applications.
Two of users uninstalled v7.0.1 client and this this started to occur some time
after that. The 3rd user is not sure what version he uninstalled (v5.1.2 or
v6.3) but he now has the problem and says that he never attempted to uninstall
v7.0.1
Has anyone else seen this and has a fix for Office 2003? We have found and
Remedy has said that the only resolution is to rebuild the user's box.

thanks

Have you tried doing an Add/Remove Programs for Office 2003 for that
user and selecting Change then the Reinstall or Repair option?

If that doesn't work (and since other users on the same box work) you
could kill that user's profile and create them a new one on that box.

**
We opened ticket with Remedy because a couple of users (3 at this point)
are no longer able to use Office 2003 and are getting this error:
Microsoft [program] has not been installed for the current user. Please
run set up to install the application.
In addition, we find that if a different user login to the affected
machine, that user is able to access the Office applications.
Two of users uninstalled v7.0.1 client and this this started to occur
some time after that. The 3rd user is not sure what version he
uninstalled (v5.1.2 or v6.3) but he now has the problem and says that he
never attempted to uninstall v7.0.1
Has anyone else seen this and has a fix for Office 2003? We have found
and Remedy has said that the only resolution is to rebuild the user's
box.

thanks

So what happens if you set your live Remedy server to GMT from, say, EST
with existing tickets in the database? Time values are stored as GMT in the
database anyway, so what's the impact?

As I recall it, the client is what displays the correct time value when
it's fetched, based on the user's time zone setting in the operating system.

So what's the catch?

2007-02-22 Thread Opela, Gary L Contr OC-ALC/ITMA
Erica, unfortunately there is a known bug with v7 user tool, if you
uninstall it, then it breaks MS Office.

Right now, it is best not to uninstall it. I believe they are working on
a new patch for this so you can uninstall it. Search the list for
messages from David Easter for full details.

The context root /arsys/ is the same between the two versions. We
wrote a servlet that has a context root that matched the old url

this for image references (used in html email templates) as well as

Question on Java needed with Remedy and DST Upgrades

2007-02-22 Thread Sokol, Brian
HI all,

I was told that I need to upgrade the versions of Java running on my Mid
Tier and AR Server boxes for DST reasons. Now I have always been
confused as to what is needed by Remedy (SDK, JRE?). Our environment is
the following:

Server 1
Windows Server 2003
Running AR Server 7.0 and AR Email 7.0
Java 2 Runtime SE 1.4.2_06

Server 2
Windows Server 2003 with IIS
Mid Tier 7.0.1 unpatched
Java 2 SDK and Java 2 Runtime Environment both version 1.4.2_07
Servlet Exec 5.0 AS

I know I need to get to 7.0.1 patch 1 but do I need to upgrade my Java
versions for DST. If so do I need both SDK and JRE or just one? Which
version? Do I need to upgrade my Servlet? I was told that if I upgrade
my Java I will need to uninstall and reinstall my servlet? Is that true?

Also if I am at ARServer 7.0 unpatched can I simply install patch 1 for
7.0.1 or must I first upgrade to 7.0.1 and then install the patch? Will
the patch upgrade the system? I am afraid it will not.

Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance.

Re: Question on Java needed with Remedy and DST Upgrades

2007-02-22 Thread Bruce Scott
Brian,

The version of Java you have installed is not DST compliant. If you
wish to stay with version 1.4, you will need to upgrade your java to
1.4.2_12 or 1.4.2_13 or try the version 1.5.0_9 or 1.5.0_10.

I have been working with Java updates as well as ServLetExec AS and
ISAPI updates and Mid-Tier updates a lot over the last few weeks and I
can tell you this. Since your Mid-Tier server is separate from the
ARS/Email server, you will need to install the jre on the ARS/Email
server (I would recommend uninstalling the existing jre and then
installing the new jre and updating the server Environment Variables
path statement to point to the correct directory of the new java jre
installation).

The Mid-Tier will require the full SDK installation (which will actually
be both the sdk and jre files) which are used by the ServLetExec.
Again, I would recommend uninstalling the existing java files, then
installing the new files, updating the Environmental Variable path and
updating the StartServletExec.bat and StopServletExec.bat files to point
to the correct installation folder for java. You will have to shut down
the IIS, WWW and ServLetExec-servername services before you can go
through this evolution however. Once the java is installed, you should
be ok with just restarting each of these services and not requiring a
reboot.

As for the best method of upgrading from 7.0 to 7.0.1, there seem to be
many opinions on that matter and I will leave that for another to share.

Thanks,
Bruce

CMDB - Asset Creation Prompt Message

2007-02-22 Thread Sanford, Claire
When a new asset is created in the CMDB using the AST:ComputerSystem
form as the entry point, the confirmation message says Request
$20020$ has been created

20020 translates into the Name field, not the Asset ID+ field
(21000).

This is a big problem. How do I change the message? I've looked for the
message in the database and can't find it. I've looked through the
workflow and can't find what is populating that box.

I've already had to add filters to stop the database from allowing the
creation of duplicate Asset ID+ entries.

Re: Question on Java needed with Remedy and DST Upgrades

2007-02-22 Thread strauss
I believe that _13 includes a security fix that you should apply, in
addition to the DST fix that first appeared in _11. We have not had any
problems with 1.4.2_13 on any of our 5.1.2 or 7.0.01 systems since we
upgraded.

**

Thanks,
Bruce

Re: Question on Java needed with Remedy and DST Upgrades

2007-02-22 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
I have always used the SDK version of Java with the Mid-Tier on Windows.
You should upgrade to 1.4.2_13. Also which version of Servlet Exec are
you using as they are now on Patch 13 (ServletExec/5.0.0.13)? Last time
I updated my Java I did not have to re-install Servlet Exec. If you do
re-install (or Upgrade) ServletExec, when un-installing tell it to leave
the directory and after installing it will have retained your settings.

Re: ARS 7.0.01 upgrade problems

2007-02-22 Thread Rick Phillips
I had a slightly different variation: in going from 5.1.2 to 7.0.1,
we had to stop at 7.0.0 first. This was due to a known error (per
support). We also had problems with forms displaying fields that the
db did not have. We exported the form, deleted the form, re-imported
the form, and thus were able to sync ARS and the DB in that the number
(and type) of fields listed in the admin tool (or the .def file)
matched what was returned via SQL Plus.

I just finished working on a CMDB 1.1 patch 4 installation that twice
failed due to incomplete installers downloaded from the support site.

The process was painful because support kept saying it was something we
did on the original upgrade. And after the usual sending of megatons of
stuff and over a week later it was determined that you needed to stop at v6
  first.

What happened to us was that all the new fields on the user and groups
forms appeared on the client screen like they were there, but in actuality
they were not in the database. If you went into the admin tool they were
there, so you moved a field or even added another field and saved ... which
should have corrected any issue of not being the same ... NOT ... they were
still not in the database. Unexplainable except that once we started over
and did the extra step everything went fine.

It was frustrating and aggrevating. It took over 3 weeks to finally get
it done. Causing me to miss my production server window and now I'm still
waiting for that since last August. Worse than a Chinese puzzle!

RPC: Miscellaneous tli error - System error (Connection refused) while accessing forms

2007-02-22 Thread Ankur Gulati (GR/EIL)
Hi All,

Well now I am able to start the arserver process and am able to log in with all
the users.I just started the Server from root this time rather than from admin.
But still when I login through a normal user(not with admin rights) and try to
open some form then it gives ARERR [90] Cannot establish a network connection
to the AR System server : testserver(0) : RPC: Miscellaneous tli error - System
error (Connection refused).

I can access same forms with user Demo but not with any other user. Though they
are able to log in to the system but while trying to open the forms getting RPC
error.

Ankur,

try running ldd command against the library which gives the error. The command
should look something like:

ldd ld.so.1

ldd shows dynamic dependencies of executable files or shared objects.

Hopefully you will see the path it is trying to use to find the
libclntsh.so.10.1 . You can then take it from there.

Hi Listers,

A wicked error is giving me a hard time.. Here's the scenario:

OS: Solaris 9

ARS: 6.0.1 and 7.0.1

DB: Oracle, oracle 9.1 client for 6 and 10.2 client for 7

Yes I have two different versions of remedy running on same server, till
morning both were running perfectly fine. Few hours back we noticed that one of
our users (not with Admin rights) started getting ARERR [90] Cannot establish a
network connection to the AR System server : testserver(0) : RPC: Miscellaneous
tli error - System error (Connection refused). but it was working fine for
users with admin rights.

I tried to restart the server and since then I all the processes start except
arserver for version 7.0. Other versions which are on 6.0.1 run fine. The error
which I recieve when I try to start arsystem is

ld.so.1: arserverd: fatal: libclntsh.so.10.1: open failed: No such file or
directory

I have checked the rights of this file and its fine, all the path variables are
set properly too.

Just dont know what went wrong suddenly. The last thing that I remember doing
on this arsystem was to import the user records from 6.0 to 7.0 and then also
it worked fine for a day and now this has resulted in tired afternoon and
evening and might have a sleepless night.

what to do?

Re: DST - another thing.

2007-02-22 Thread Julio Verne Goncalves
G'day listers,

I guess the problem is how to maintain DST starting and ending dates for all
cities around the world?

DST observance is very often a city government decision. Even cities in the
same GMT differ in whether will observe DST and starting and end dates.

There are lots of patches solely for DST purposes on all operating systems.

If you can, just take a look at the source files for TZ on Unix and you will
see the amount of comments from people all around the world on this matter.

At the end of the day the question is who would be spending the money in
keeping this information up to date to that level?
